Our Values

RESPECT

Respect for one’s self and for others is the foundation of honor and the basis of integrity. A hallmark of our community is respect — for the process by which we seek truths and for those who engage in that process. Such respect is essential for nurturing the free and open discourse, exploration, and creative expression that characterize a university. Respect results in dedication to individual as well as collective expression of truth and honesty. Respect is demonstrated by

MizzouRec has three additional guiding values. These statements are mere words until we integrate them as values in our individual lives and reflect them in our institutional policies and practices. We pledge ourselves to make them effective in the very fabric of our lives, our community, and all our relationships with others, thereby enhancing the development of individuals and the well-being of society.

a commitment to act ethically, to welcome difference, and to engage in open exchange about both ideas and decisions.

DISCOVERY Learning requires trust in the process of discovery. Discovery often fractures existing world views and requires acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Therefore, the university must support all of its members in the lifelong process that is both challenging and rewarding. As we seek greater understanding and wisdom, we also recognize that knowledge itself has boundaries — what we know is not all that is.

RESPONSIBILITY A sense of responsibility requires careful reflection on one’s moral obligations. Being responsible imposes the duty on us and our university to make decisions by acknowledging the context and considering consequences, both intended and unintended, of any course of action. Being responsible requires us to be thoughtful stewards of resources — accountable to ourselves, each other, and the

RELATIONSHIPS Our success depends on the quality of our interactions and the clarity of our communication with others. Forming, nurturing and maintaining positive relationships is the ideal outcome of our time together at work, in class and at leisure. To this end, MizzouRec works tirelessly to provide an outstanding environment to cultivate relationships that last a lifetime.

PHILANTHROPY MizzouRec has been given great gifts of support and wonderful resources from generations of students and administrators at MU. It is part of our culture to share appropriately and wisely with a variety of worthwhile causes and initiatives.

public we serve.

EXCELLENCE We aspire to an excellence which is approached through diligent effort, both individual and collective. Pursuing excellence means being satisfied with no less than the highest goals we can envision. Pursuing excellence involves being informed by regional, national, and global standards, as well as our personal expectations. We recognize and accept the sacrifices, risks, and responsibilities involved in pursuing excellence, and so we celebrate each other’s successes. We commit ourselves to this process in an ethical and moral manner. NATION 2

AUTHENTICITY In a world filled with brands, labels, expectations and images, it is important that each of us reserve time daily to connect to our true selves. Placing an organizational value on authenticity means that being genuine in our words and our deeds is important and a priority.

STATE OF THE NATION The theme of this edition of the NATION is MizzouRec Myths. It was chosen in hopes of dispelling myths and doing some “truth-telling,” as they say in Little Dixie. For entertainment, I thought I would share some of my favorite MizzouRec myths. I hope that you will find them as amusing as I have over the years.

been happy places where good things happened (with the exception of an occasional Missouri loss back in the day when Tiger Athletics competed here). MizzouRec staff have spent nights in the old buildings during snow emergencies, and besides a few creaks and squeaks due to settling, lack of humidity and wind, there is nothing to fear.

THE CHESTER L. BREWER PORTRAIT HAS EYES THAT FOLLOW YOU—FACT! ROTHWELL GYMNASIUM & BREWER FIELD HOUSE ARE HAUNTED—MYTH! While the old 1905 gymnasium and the 1929 field house have been the sites of many, many Mizzou events and memories, we have found neither any evidence of evil nor disturbed spirits roaming the halls and rooms at night or during the day. Perhaps this is because Rothwell and Brewer have always 10

NATION

The men of the 1950 Varsity M Club commissioned a portrait of beloved athletic director and coach, Chester L. Brewer. Presented in the fall of 1950, the painting hung in Brewer Field house for nearly three decades. It was taken down by painting and construction crew members in the early 80s for safekeeping during a project, stored under the old bleachers in the field house, forgotten and never rehung. The portrait was discovered, covered in inches of dust, by MizzouRec staff in 2002 during a pre-construction project clean-out of the

storage spaces. It was cleaned and placed in the conference room where it remained throughout all of the Brewer-Rothwell expansion and renovation project meetings from 2002-2003. “Chester,” as the staff refers to the portrait, remained on casual display in the administrative staff construction trailer until December 2004. At that point, “Chester” came home to the former trophy room, now renamed Old Varsity Club, where he once presided over meetings, announced the formation of the M Club, and initiated the first Homecoming. When you move about Old Varsity Club today or sit anywhere around the M table, Chester’s eyes do indeed follow you wherever you move. We hope that he likes what he sees and approves of how we are taking care of the place.

the Playboy Grotto plans in detail in order to bring our own Tiger Grotto to life. As I was told by Scot Hunsaker, the description I provided of the space based on my friend's grotto experience was extremely accurate with only one exception— Tiger Grotto has more sizzle.

ALL MIZZOUREC PROGRAMS ARE ALWAYS RELEASED AT THE 100% MARK AND COMPLETELY READY TO GO—MYTH! TIGER GROTTO IS MODELED AFTER THE POOL AT THE L.A. PLAYBOY MANSION—FACT! On occasion, staff members will hear tour leaders whisper to guests, as if sharing a great secret, that our own Tiger Grotto was inspired by the grotto at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. This is true, and it is not a secret. However, it is completely false that a particular member of the leadership team was ever a bunny and that she professionally progressed from a Playboy career to a collegiate recreation one, and thus, designed the grotto. (We’ve overheard this shared in hushed tones, too, and while amusing, it is not accurate, nor is it a professional recreation career path). Here is the real story: In the early 70s, a great friend of mine struck up a friendship with a woman who was the mother of a Playmate of the Year. As things happen in life, he was invited to attend a party in L.A. at the fabled Playboy Mansion and, yes, he experienced the grotto. Upon his return, he treated me to vivid descriptions of the event, the grounds and especially the famous grotto. His story and descriptions provided the inspiration for the development of Tiger Grotto thirty years later when the MizzouRec design team challenged the project architects to give our Tigers something truly special. And yes, the aquatic designers of Counsilman-Hunsaker researched

Typically our new programs and spaces are ready to go immediately when announced, but there are exceptions. Right now, MizzouRec is getting ready to open the doors on Clark's Boxing Gym and Stalcup’s Garage in Downtown Brewer. While the program architecture is in place, filling in the details and nuances has been left open-ended this time so that our students can actively participate in shaping the final program content, hours, features and context. This is especially important when launching a MizzouRec Original. Each of our programs are developed and designed exclusively for the unique MizzouRec environment with only Tigers in mind. Many collegiate recreation organizations introduce programs to their campuses that are modeled (adopted or adapted) from other colleges or universities. However, at MizzouRec we build our programs from scratch, which is why so many other places borrow inspiration from MizzouRec programs, spaces and services—and why we are considered the preeminent collegiate recreation model. By employing this strategic approach to “filling out” the new Clark's and Stalcup's programs, our students will actively participate in the final phases of program development, ensuring the best fit for Tiger fun and fitness. The programs will have a soft opening in spring 2015, with the final program format confirmed for a solid fall 2015 debut. Enjoy!

THE DEETS: WHO CAN USE THE SPACE?

MizzouRec members have several unique opportunities to experience the Garage! TigerX members can take the Functional Fitness class offered daily during the week - sign-ups work like cycling and reformer classes. zouLIFE Boot Camps will utilize the space during their weekly sessions. STALCUP WHO? Wilbur "Sparky" Stalcup is a famed former Missouri men's basketball coach who led the Tigers to 195 wins and two Big Seven Holiday Tournament championships in 16 seasons. He was president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches from 1961-62. After his coaching career, Stalcup served as Mizzou's athletic director, and was named to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. Stalcup's Garage is in honor of his competitive spirit and dedication to building a positive sporting environment.

WHERE IS STALCUP’S GARAGE?

Stalcup’s Garage is located in Downtown Brewer, between the brand new Clark’s Boxing Gym, and the Tiger Lair. Just come down to the court level from either entrance and look for the sign.

WHEN IS IT OPEN?

The schedule isn’t final yet, but you can get an idea of what we’re going for. The sample below shows mostly open gym time, with regular class and Boot Camp offerings, too. We’re excited for you to experience the space and we welcome your feedback as we continue to develop this space.

SHOWCASE

Achieving excellence requires consistency and innovation, and that’s why MizzouRec carries such enthusiasm into fostering new partnerships. Our partners, Star Trac, Octane Fitness and FreeMotion, are pioneering the new age of the fitness industry. In coupling their leading edge with ours, we’ve been able to enhance the fitness experience for our members in a fresh and inventive new way. The MizzouRec Fitness Showcase features pre-production test pieces of equipment from these brands, and by training in this space, our members are involved in shaping the direction of the industry. Aside from exposing the latest offerings from our partners, our Showcase is a reflection of MizzouRec’s dedication to leading the pack in collegiate recreation. Here we’ve highlighted several of the celebrity machines in our Showcase. NATION

SHOWCASE STUDIES STAR TRAC

EXPANDING: BOXMASTER®

A new rumble in the jungle.

The Star Trac BoxMaster® is brand new to MizzouRec this spring, and replicates the motions of punching a focused mitt, delivering an unparalleled boxing experience that achieves both aerobic and anaerobic progression. Star Trac Coach Kimberly Shah visited MizzouRec to help our fitness staff give the BoxMaster® a warm welcome (by throwing some punches, that is). “I love teaching at universities,” Shah said. “There’s always so much energy and the students are always in learning mode. Coming [to MizzouRec] has been great – this is one of the best facilities I’ve seen.”

30

NATION

Our fitness staff learned everything from how to properly wrap boxing gloves to crosses, hooks, uppercuts and combinations during the Star Trac in-house training. Personal trainers and other fitness instructors are enthusiastic about introducing the new space to members this spring. Members should without a doubt expect a fulfilling, high-intensity workout from the BoxMaster®. “I have a new appreciation for this type of training,” zouLIFE personal trainer Rhyder Timmins said, “because I was pretty tired afterward.”

SHOWCASE STUDIES FREEMOTION

INCLINE TRAINER CHALLENGE WINNERS

CHALLENGE: VERTICAL MILES We're always game for some friendly competition. Last semester we hosted a FreeMotion challenge in our Fitness Showcase. Challengers had to climb as many vertical feet as possible in 20 minutes on the FreeMotion Incline Trainer with at least 18-percent incline. Participants could not pause, stop or get off the Incline Trainer during the challenge, and they also could not hold on to anything at any time. The total vertical feet accomplished in the 20-minute interval was the recorded footage for each participant. Fifteen members competed in the challenge, and the challenge winners were awarded FreeMotion water bottles and 100 dollars. Mark Ashcraft, FreeMotion Missouri territory manager, and Tom Johnson, Orthotech vice president of sales, were the on-site supervisors during the challenge.

THE DIVING WELL FEATURES AN OLYMPIC-SIZED PLATFORM and four competition springboards for use by the Mizzou Diving team. Swimming is available to all members in the eight, 25-yard lanes below. The Diving Well is similar to the 50M Pool in that it is accessible to all, and provides the opportunity for many types of exercise. This pool can be used for water walking and lap swim, giving members another great option for working on their fitness goals or leisure pursuits in the water. The water is kept slightly warmer than the 50M Pool, which is kept cooler for the intense training and competition by the competitive teams who practice in the Mizzou Aquatic Center. This pool is available during some Mizzou Swimming & Diving practices and other times during the day. The Diving Well also features a hot tub that's available to members when the Tiger Grotto is closed.

Bonus Rec'd Myth: No, we're not making it up. Michael Phelps really DID swim in our pools. Cool, right?

SWIM IN THE BEST 50 METER POOL IN THE NATION! The 50M Pool in the Mizzou Aquatic Center is available to members every day, with kickboards, pull-buoys, and aqua jogging belts provided for member use, and are found in equipment cages at both pools. Swimmers are welcome and encouraged to bring other training equipment (see restrictions at mizzourec.com), such as fins, goggles, paddles and even underwater headphones. In addition to offering lap swim during operating hours, a couple of added features have made the experience even better for athletes, coaches and spectators. Both the 50M Pool and Diving Well have Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems. In concert with proper air handling and pool chemistry, the UV systems provide better air and water quality in the Mizzou Aquatic Center, and reduce the amount of pool chemicals needed for proper maintenance. The Mizzou Aquatic Institute, TigerSwim, and Masters Swim all utilize this space for lessons and practices.

TRUMAN’S POND IS YOUR VERY OWN ON-CAMPUS BEACH CLUB! Truman’s Pond will open in mid-April (weather permitting) and be available through September. The floating lounge chairs, couches, music and plenty of sun help provide a perfect relaxing environment for hard-working students who need a respite from their studies or a change of scenery. Dip your toes in the water or float on an inner tube, whatever suits you. The pond is accessed through the aquatic corridor after exiting the locker rooms, or through Tiger Grotto when it’s open. When the weather is warm, grab some friends, sunscreen and sunglasses and head on over to Truman’s Pond for some fun in the sun.

IT’S ALWAYS SPRING BREAK IN TIGER GROTTO! The Grotto will transform your dullest day into a vacation, with our resort quality facilities and atmosphere that is sure to help you unwind, even with the most stressful of schedules. The Grotto features a zero-depth pool entry with a high-powered vortex, lazy river and waterfall. Lounging chairs, tables and other seating options surround the Grotto, making this tropical oasis a leisurely place to study or read a book. The lazy river is perfect for exercise activities such as water walking, and the Grotto’s hot tub, Sauna Hut and Steam Shack are your ticket to relaxation after a swim or a tough workout. Treat yourself to this on-campus tropical retreat.

REJUVENATE YOUR SPIRIT IN TIGER GROTTO’S SAUNA HUT AND STEAM SHACK. The Sauna Hut uses dry heat to relax you while the Steam Shack fills the air with a warm mist. Both are open during Tiger Grotto hours and are a great place to unwind from that hectic day of classes or work, or to simply loosen up after a tough workout. See attire guidelines at mizzourec.com. The Sauna Hut and Steam Shack are prime relaxation spots within Tiger Grotto’s tropical paradise, and are available to all members looking for a getaway. However, members should use caution when using these spaces, and should avoid exercising in the sauna and the steam room, and should also take frequent breaks to cool off.

RESPECT Be respectful of the facility, the equipment, the other patrons and staff on duty. BE CONSIDERATE Please be aware of and take care not to interrupt others’ swimming with your entry or exit, when changing equipment or resting. The lanes are for lap swimming only. Please exit the pool for long conversations or extended breaks. LANE CHOICE/PACING Know your abilities as a swimmer. Be aware of the water depth, and choose a lane with other swimmers at a similar skill level and pace. ENTRY Enter the water feet first. Make sure you are aware of the water depth and other swimmers while entering or exiting.

ETIQUETTE CIRCLE SWIM AND SHARE Lap lanes can accommodate six to eight lap swimmers at once when each person circle swims. Swimmers must stay on the right side of the lanes at all times and swim in a counterclockwise direction. This will reduce congestion and keep the lane moving. LANE LINES Lane lines are not weight bearing equipment. Please do not hang onto the lines between sets or after workouts. Complete Mizzou Aquatic Center hours & guidelines may be found at mizzourec.com.

We make sure you have what you need to get a great workout. Now we help you track them, too. The MizzouRec App has a variety of features that can challenge you and monitor your progress. Log your workouts on our machines or enter them manually, compete in fitness challenges and use its social connection to encourage your friends! The MizzouRec App also syncs with fitness devices like Fitbit and Jawbone.

MYTHS

WE’VE BEEN INSIDE THESE LIMESTONE WALLS LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. We’ve heard the unwritten rules, the misconceptions and the hearsay, so we decided it’s finally time to dispel the mythiest myths that are lurking around. So, let's have a little fun with the most deeply-rooted MizzouRec myths. by Micheala Sosby

NATION

35

MYTH: “Pump Room is only for

dudes and serious bodybuilders.” Who says women don’t like to pump some iron?! We’re here to tell you many women already DO use the Pump Room, and this space is most definitely not a “men-only” zone. You don’t have to be a man or have biceps the size of Arnold's to take your workout to the Pump Room (or any our facilities, for that matter). We know it might take some courage to workout in the Pump Room for the first time, and to someone unfamiliar with weightlifting the equipment in there probably looks more like some sort of medieval torture devices (we assure you, they are not). But the patrons of the Pump Room, as well as our Team Mizzou staff members, are nice people and lots of them will be more than happy to show you around and spot for you. If you feel you need a little more guidance, our personal training program can help you get comfortable.

MYTHS PUMP ROOM

The benefits of free-weight training are for everyone, so don’t let this myth cause you to miss out on a great workout.

! D ' REC Bonus Rec'd Myth: Excessive grunting and dropping weights doesn't intimidate anyone, it just distracts others and damages equipment.

April Hart I usually workout in the Pump Room early in the morning because I have more energy then.

Caitlyn Boyd I usually lift weights in the Pump Room because it has the most weights and racks. My favorite piece of equipment is definitely the squat rack because squats are my favorite exercise.

MYTH: “Guys don't do TigerX.” No male TigerX member has reported catching the cooties after attending a group fitness class. Plenty have, however, reported satisfying workouts and higher energy levels. We know the TigerX classes tend to attract a larger female populace, but there’s no reason guys shouldn’t reap the benefits of incorporating group fitness into their workout regimens. In fact, some guys like TigerX so much that they become instructors. When guys exclude themselves from TigerX, they’re just missing out on opportunities to get their heart-rates up, shred some muscle and improve flexibility, like INSANITY®, cycling and yoga. It’s pretty silly to attach a nonexistent gender boundary to a fitness program for everyone, don't you think?

MYTHS TIGERX

38

NATION

Da Li - TigerX Member I try to encourage more male students to take part in TigerX classes, especially some of the cardio ones. I especially like INSANITY速, Pilates and yoga.

Brian Jochems - TigerX Instructor I really like the TigerX Maximum Participation program. It emphasizes the MizzouRec philosophy of trying different activities, finding the motivation to try new classes and getting members to step outside of the boxes.

MYTHS zouLIFE Angela Behm zouLIFE Manicurist, Class MO Certified When people come in we start with a blank canvas. When they’re done in zouLIFE, their gel nails just look amazing – they’re shiny and dry when they leave so there’s no way for them to mess it up. It doesn’t matter if your nails were long or short when you came in. When you leave, they’re beautiful.

Laura Zambrana zouLIFE Spray Tan Tech, T.A.N.S. Certified To get certified as a spray tan technician, the company that owns all of the spray tan supplies came to Columbia and we spent a whole day training and spraying a whole bunch of people—people who worked here, anyone. We just learned the ropes on how to properly spray, and then we had about two weeks where we could just bring in anyone to spray them and practice. Bonus Rec'd Myth: No, you don't have to go off-campus for professional spa services. Quality and convenience are right in the heart of campus. 40

NATION

MYTH: “zouLIFE service providers

are students, not professionals.”

No, we didn’t hire a random kid in your math class to be your massage therapist. You'll receive professional treatments every time. In fact, most zouLIFE service providers aren’t members of our student staff, and the only students that provide spa services are spray tan technicians. Student staff members who work in zouLIFE more frequently tend the customer service desk. But, it’s important to note that regardless of their student status, ALL zouLIFE service providers are properly certified and trained in their specialties. They’re professionals! Just like TigerX instructors, personal trainers and lifeguards, we require that zouLIFE providers obtain special certification and licenses.

Caryn Ranney zouLIFE personal trainer A water workout does not just mean swimming laps; there are many variations of water aerobics, one being water walking or running. It is simply walking/running like you would on land, but in the water. Water provides more resistance than air so you actually work your muscles more than you would on land.

Diane Dahlmann Director, MizzouRec Five years ago, my knee problems escalated to the point where I could no longer walk without crutches. I pondered my options and recognized that the only way I was going to get moving again was to move now, however the question remained as to “how, considering the pain I was having. Today, I hit the water for three hours each week. That time keeps my knees in shape and keeps me off of any medications for joint pain or discomfort.

! D ' C RE 42

NATION

MYTH: “Tiger Grotto is just a

pretty face, function following form.” The lazy river isn’t just for being lazy. And, Tiger Grotto isn’t just a highlight on the campus tour route, or a leisure-only space. The water resistance and relatively shallow depths make the lazy river and the vortex prime waterwalking spaces. Water-walking in the Grotto has plenty of potential for added health benefits: it’s an excellent aerobic and calorie-burning workout that can help correct muscle imbalances as well provide a way to stay active while nursing an injury. You’re more than welcome to kick back and relax in the Grotto, but we also encourage you to try incorporating our tropical island oasis into your workout regimen. Bonus Rec'd Myth: No, the palm trees in Tiger Grotto aren't embalmed or flown in from the tropics.

From the MizzouRec Blog: LIFEWORKS EXPERIENCE -by Micheala Sosby

Jamie Drago comes to MizzouRec for much more than a good workout. For her, MizzouRec’s fitness and dance studios have become a second home on campus. “I’ve been dancing since third grade,” Jamie says, “and I really didn’t want to lose that once I came to college. I wanted to keep dancing because I had been doing competition. Then I saw that they had actual dance classes here at the Rec, so I signed up for the [Lifeworks Dance classes].”

“[Lifeworks] helped me get back into dance,” Jamie says. “It’s a way to exercise without making me feel like I’m exercising.”

Jamie Drago has participated in the Jumps & Turns class as well as the Contemporary class, and was excited to try the Jazz and Hiphop courses when they made their debut in the Lifeworks lineup last spring.

“If you haven’t done it before,” Jamie says, “I’d say it’s a slow enough pace that you’ll be able to pick it up. But if you have danced before, it’s challenging enough to still be fun. It’s a nice medium pace.”

Though Jamie has had plenty of prior competitive experience, she recommends the program to anyone with an interest in dance.

Club Sport is competitive, charges dues, and has tryouts. Some sports are instructional, some are free, and some don't have tryouts.

CLUB SPORTS MizzouRec’s Club Sports program promotes student leadership and healthy lifestyles through a variety of competitive and instructional environments. Club Sports are student-led organizations in which participants travel and compete against other collegiate teams, or can be instructional in nature. Club Sports supports student involvement by providing welcoming, team-oriented groups through which it’s easy to make new friends and use competition as a means to stay active and healthy. Club Sports are an excellent option for students who want to continue improving their game while in college, or who are simply looking to try something new. Last academic year, Club Sports participation totaled 1,990 students, which was 200 more than the previous year. The clubs also hosted 62 home events and traveled on 249 trips to 25 different states. In an effort to keep cost of membership low for participants, many club teams organize their own fundraising events to help finance travel and competition fees. With so much adventure and competition, MizzouRec’s Club Sports program is rich in team building and personal growth opportunities for all students alike. 56

hit the ice WITH THE MIZZOU SYNCHRONIZED SKATING CLUB by Micheala Sosby

The Mizzou Synchronized Skating Club just laced up its skates this year, but the idea to bring such a team to the university wasn’t fresh ice. The past decade saw the attempts of many students and synchro skaters to mobilize a team at Mizzou, but this semester marked the first time skaters made an organized presence. Needless to say, Club President Jessica Godar and her fellow teammates were excited to have finally broken the ice that had long since been collecting grooves of a dream they shared with many skaters before them. “We worked with the Club Sports committee and lots of other groups to get our team approved,” Godar said. “They said the hardest part of forming the team would be finding people to join, but that was actually the easiest.” Finding dedicated and enthusiastic coaches wasn’t hard, either. Kelsie Grate, Godar’s sister who tried to start a team at Mizzou before graduating in 2012, now coaches youth skating teams at Jefferson City’s Washington Park Ice Arena, and didn’t need much convincing to get involved. Mizzou alumna Jolyn Hecht commutes from Springfield, Mo. to practices in Jefferson City to serve as the club’s skating director. “When [Kelsie and I] were here [at Mizzou],” Hecht said, “we tried to start this, so it’s incredible that it’s happened now. Now skaters who come here from all over finally have an outlet to do their sport at their school.” The Synchro Club will showcase its talent and athleticism at several recitals and competitions throughout the Midwest this year, and

aspires to qualify for U.S. Figure Skating Nationals. The team’s competition routine is choreographed to a mash-up of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” and Adele’s “Skyfall” that also includes an instrumental piece. Club Vice President Marsha Lewis describes synchronized skating as a group effort that involves coordination and “literally holding on to each other,” making team chemistry and experience vital. However, only a few club members had ever skated together before, and two others had figure skating experience but had never been on a synchro team. Despite those challenges, the Synchro Club finished its first competition, the Nov. Kansas City Fall Fling, with second-place medals after only a few months of ice time. The club has also adopted some creative ways of bonding as a team, like dressing up for themed practices once a month and spending time together off the ice. In addition to having strong showings at competitions, getting exposure and increasing the club’s social media presence are the team’s primary goals this season. The club has already developed a following on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. “Since synchro is such a fast-growing sport right now,” Lewis said, “social media is really big for it. So following other clubs and rinks and getting them to follow us back is really important.” Throughout the next few years, the Synchro Club hopes to increase its membership and, as skater Bell Johnson describes, be a program "that people come to Mizzou for.” “The team is powerful,” Johnson said. “Everybody has great skills and we’re very accomplished skaters who have been doing it for a while, and we’ve all been really cohesive as far as adapting to everyone’s skill levels. We’re excited to be on the ice as a team.” NATION

follow the free agents WITH RECSPORT'S FREE AGENT TEAM: VICTORIOUS SECRET by Micheala Sosby Usually free agent players are recruited and scattered across existing teams before a RecSports season starts. But sometimes, they stick together and form a team of their own. That’s what happened during this fall’s flag football season. Some of the free agents attended an informational meeting with RecSports coordinators before the season started, and they could have each then began their individual quests for a team in need of players.

opportunity to stay connected to their sport while taking a break from coursework on Monday nights. “It’s nice that [RecSports] allows us to be competitive, but it’s still pretty easygoing,” Kevin Cooke said. The team finished the regular season with a 3-3 record, and lost in the second round of playoffs. But the RecSports fun isn’t over for team Victorious Secret. Team members plan to keep the crew together for many flag football seasons to come. “Flag football was something to look forward to on Monday nights,” Matt Drury said. “...All season, our strategy was just to play as a team - everybody plays, everyone has a good time.”

But why look for a team to join when it seems you’ve already got one? Twelve flag football free agents, only a handful of whom knew each other before the season, joined forces to create team “Victorious Secret.” Though majority of the players had just met for the first time with the season underway, plenty of laughs, jokes, teamwork and good vibes were had on Stankowski Field this fall. “Our team has a lot of different people who come from all over,” team captain DJ Hardy said. “It’s been fun meeting new people, making new friends. I’ve always loved football, so I wanted to get involved with RecSports so I could still compete.” "I was happy we decided to form a team together for flag football," Sam Hader added. "It seemed like a really good use of free time." Many of the team members were freshmen who had been competitive athletes in high school, so RecSports gave them the

GRADUATES 68

NATION

Grad Lunch is MizzouRec's traditional celebration of its graduating staff. The class of December 2014 was initiated into the Team Mizzou Alumni family, receiving fleece jackets. Staff members of six semesters or more were honored with Team Mizzou graduation stoles. We'll miss these outstanding Team Mizzou members, but we're more than confident they'll continue to contribute excellence to their communities.

It's no secret that MizzouRec likes to roll out the black and gold carpet for Team Mizzou alumni when they come to town for Homecoming festivities. Between the silent auction, great food, live music, a photo booth and the laughs and conversation, we made sure our annual Team Mizzou Alumni Social gave our former student staff members a warm welcome.

TEAM MIZZOU LOVE Thank goodness for the 2011 Team Mizzou Alumni Reunion. Otherwise Matt Amen may not have made the trek from St. Louis back to Columbia that Homecoming Eve, gotten caught in a horde of traffic, almost not made it, but somehow pulled it together and managed to arrive safely at Bengals – where he saw former Team Mizzou coworker Teresa Braeckel for the first time since their 2009 graduation. Fast forward to 2015, Matt and Teresa are happily engaged and excited for their October wedding. But throughout their college years, they were just friends – it was only after the Team Mizzou Alumni Reunion that the two decided to date. (Not that we’re taking credit for this or anything). “We spent the whole evening together at the event, the whole next day, tailgating with friends – it was our ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Matt said. "Before the alumni event it was always just 'Oh that’s my work friend Teresa.'" 70

NATION

Teresa is originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Matt from St. Louis. They maintained a long-distance relationship when they each moved back to their hometowns after graduation, but settled in together this past November, and are now residing in the St. Charles, Mo. area. “I’m excited to just experience living together,” Teresa said, “and spending time together without having to worry about who’s going to travel to go see who.” “I think we’re going to travel together places now,” Matt added. “Teresa kind of got me into traveling.” Teresa was a hospitality management major while at Mizzou, and now works at the St. Patrick Center in downtown St. Louis, which works to solve homelessness by giving “a hand up” and helping community members get back on their feet. During her college career she participated in Dance Marathon, was a marketing assistant for Mizzou Athletics and was highly involved within her major. Matt was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and is a now a quality scientist at EMD Millipore. He’s looking to pursue an MBA in the near future.

Both Teresa and Matt were hired at MizzouRec as sophomores, and they say their Team Mizzou experiences largely defined their college careers. Matt was a Team Mizzou member for four years and worked primarily in Facilities and Events, while Teresa was a Team Mizzou member for five years and worked in Facilities, Aquatics and Events. “We were here [at the Rec] because we wanted to be here," Teresa said, "and I think that’s why our employment lasted the duration of our undergraduate and even post-undergraduate experience.”

Spring Roar, MizzouRec's celebration of employee excellence each May, was one of Matt and Teresa's favorite memories of Team Mizzou. Teresa and Matt still cherish the friendships they forged from their involvement with Team Mizzou, and many of their closest friends are also Team Mizzou alumni. "I met so many people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise from all different backgrounds," Teresa said. "...It wasn’t like going to work, it was like going home.”

“It was awesome to be in a suit and tie, dressed up, acting very professionally. We were really getting a lot of experience."

Teresa and Matt say one of their greatest takeaways from Team Mizzou was a better sense of professionalism. Working at the Rec helped Teresa build her résumé and qualify for in-state tuition during her time at Mizzou, and Matt says he graduated from Team Mizzou feeling more prepared for life after college. They met while serving on the selection team during Team Mizzou Recruitment and interviewing potential new hires.

“Probably six months after I got hired I was helping interview people,” Matt said. “It was awesome to be in a suit and tie, dressed up, acting very professionally. We were really getting a lot of experience."

“I love the fact that I was here working but it didn’t feel like work because I just really enjoyed it," Matt added. "I’d be in the facility helping people, meeting people, communicating.”

Matt and Teresa plan on attending many more Team Mizzou Alumni Reunions as a married couple. They're looking forward to their wedding and having all their loved ones - family, friends, former Team Mizzou coworkers under one roof in celebration. “Matt’s just always been there for me," Teresa said. "He’s been a constant. We’ve known we were special ever since we met, and that’s why we stayed friends all this time.” -by Micheala Sosby
