“IT IS IMPORTANT AS CITIZENS THAT WE EXERCISE OUR RIGHTS, RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE OUR PRIVILEGES, AND BE DILIGENT IN THE REALIZATION OF OUR DUTIES.” 6 | MIZZOUREC.COM

STATE NATION of the

We are on the cusp of another national election, meaning it’s the opportune time to raise the subject of active citizenship. In the spirit of the season I occasionally ask others in casual conversation, “So, are you ready to vote?” and nearly half of the time the response is, “No, I’m not political.” Not political? Yikes! As a citizen of the USA, that sort of response baffles me. How can you opt out of the privilege to have a voice? Our country relies on the voices of many to determine the course of its destiny. Whether we like what is happening in the political arena or not, making a deliberate choice to not vote is, well, foreign to me.

For the sake of clarification, let’s take a look at the word “citizenship.” Citizenship, according to the dictionary is the state of being vested with the rights, privileges, and duties of a citizen; the character of an individual viewed as a member of society; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen.

Rights, privileges, and duties, not or duties, but and duties. Being a citizen of a country or a society obligates members to particular duties. Voting is one of these simple, yet powerful, obligations that doubles as a privilege of United States citizenship. Living in the USA, living in Columbia, or being a member of the Mizzou campus community comes with obligations and duties in addition to rights and privileges. You don’t necessarily receive one without the other. It is important as citizens that we exercise our rights, recognize and appreciate our privileges, and be diligent in the realization of our duties. Use this wild and crazy season of USA politics to reflect on your own sense of citizenship, whether you are a US citizen, or from our international community. Consider what it means to have duties, to have privileges and to have rights. Embrace your opportunity to make a difference, to have a voice, and above all, be bold in your personal practice of maximum participation. It can make all the difference to your experience as an active citizen of the world.

Walking through campus this August doesn’t have to feel like trying to work your way through a labyrinth. MizzouRec made this handy-dandy map to help you strut your stuff through campus like one of the locals on your way to get in a workout. We’ve color-coded many of Mizzou’s major buildings and landmarks based on their approximate walking distance (in minutes) from MizzouRec. Just keep this map in your freshman year tool belt and you’ll conquer the campus jungle in no time.

REC FAQS DO I NEED AN MU ID TO GET INTO THE REC? Yes! You must have an active MU student ID or MizzouRec-issued ID (for non-student members) in order to access the facility. If you forget your ID, you may present another official form of photo ID at the Member & Guest Services desk. You are allowed one “courtesy pass” per semester for not having your MU student or MizzouRec-issued ID with you upon attempted entry. Subsequent fees for not having your ID with you are $10 per occurrence. If a question arises as to the validity of the presented ID, a second form of ID may be required. In order to keep your payments as secure as possible, we do not accept cash.

CAN I BRING A GUEST?

You are responsible for the conduct of your guest during your visit. For information regarding guest guidelines, please visit mizzourec.com/guests.

WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE MY ID TO ACCESS THE FACILITY? For your safety, security and account protection. We want you to be able to enjoy the MizzouRec membership experiences that are rightfully yours, and that you’ve paid for, and for that reason we take the appropriate measures to ensure that those who aren’t paying, or who don’t have authorized access, aren’t taking advantage of a lax security system. With thousands of members entering and exiting our facility daily, taking the time to verify each one is important to us, and it’s important to your security.

Yes! Guest days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until 5 pm. All guests must be at least 18 years old and must present a valid, government-issued photo ID which displays a date of birth. Each guest will be charged a $10.80 (including tax) fee with a limit of two guests per day. Please check in with your guest at the Member & Guest Services desk!

SECURE Okay, last step before your workout: lock up your stuff! We have over 550 lockers available. They’re in the Jungle Gym, Jungle Gym Concourse, Brewer Station, and outside the Pump Room near the South SRC. In our men’s and women’s locker rooms, we’ve got free day lockers, and ones you can rent for $35 a semester or $60 for the year. For a customized experience, you can become a member of Rothwell Club for some extra #class at $18 per month. But really, lock up your stuff, so it doesn’t become missing in action. 50M POOL • DIVING WELL • TIGER GROTTO • TRUMAN’S POND

50M Pool

The 50 meter pool in the Mizzou Aquatic Center, one of the best competition pools in the nation, is available to members each and every day. Kickboards, pull-buoys, and aqua jogging belts are provided for members’ use, and are found in equipment cages at both pools. Swimmers are welcome and encouraged to bring any other training equipment needed, such as fins, goggles, paddles, and even underwater headphones and personal music system. Lap swim etiquette is encouraged, in order to create a welcoming environment and a more satisfying experience for everyone.

Truman’s Pond

Truman’s Pond is your on-campus beach club that opens, weather permitting, in mid-April, just in time for you to soak up some sun as you push toward the end of the semester. Truman’s Pond opens earlier and stays open later in the season than most outdoor Missouri pools. The floating lounge chairs, mellow music and plenty of sun help provide a perfect relaxing environment for hard-working students who need a respite from their studies or a change of scenery. The pond is accessed through the aquatic corridor after exiting the locker rooms, or through Tiger Grotto when it’s open. You can even walk across the shallow water to make your way to a shady chair. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!

Diving Well

In the same space as the 50M Pool you will find the Diving Well that features a full 10 meter platform and four springboards which are used for training and competition only, but swimming is available in the eight, 25-yard lanes below. The Diving Well is similar to the 50M Pool in that it is accessible to all, and provides the opportunity for many types of exercise. The water is kept slightly warmer than the 50M Pool, which is kept cooler for the intense training and competition by the competitive teams who practice in the Mizzou Aquatic Center. This pool is available during Mizzou Swimming & Diving practices, and at other times during the day. The Diving Well also features a hot tub that is available to members when the Tiger Grotto is closed. All pool hours can be found at mizzourec.com/mizzouaquatic-center-hours. MIZZOUREC.COM | 31

PADDLE BOARD YOGA LOOKS PRETTY INTIMIDATING IF YOU’VE NEVER DONE IT. DOES THAT STANDARD HOLD UP WHEN YOU ACTUALLY DO IT? Paddle board yoga is definitely intimidating when you first start! Expect it to be a good core workout, but don’t let the intimidating nature of the class keep you away from it! WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN GIVING PADDLE BOARD YOGA A TRY? Don’t compare yourself to the people around you! Yoga is about finding peace of mind and body, whether you’re on the ground or in the water! The practice is for YOU, and you should focus on yourself and not what the people around you are doing. WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A TIGERX INSTRUCTOR? I love the idea that I actually could he changing the way that people view their health and more specifically, their workout. I love seeing people smile after class and seeing that they truly enjoyed their workout and that it wasn’t a chore. WHAT HAS YOUR TEAM MIZZOU EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE? ERIKA IS A JUNIOR BIOLOGY PRE-MED STUDENT. SHE HAS BEEN A TEAM MIZZOU MEMBER SINCE APRIL 2014. IF YOU CAN’T FIND ERIKA GIVING SPRAY TANS IN ZOULIFE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIND HER PLAYING A ROUND OF CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY WITH SOME MIZZOUREC PERSONAL TRAINERS. MEET ERIKA! HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR MAJOR? Both of my parents are doctors so that was a big pull for me. I love the medical field. I want to be a plastic surgeon. It should be about 8 more years of school. NAME A FUN FACT THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU. I’m from California. We live in Laguna Beach so I love being on the beach. I don’t surf but we live right on the beach. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM MIZZOU MEMORY? I have game nights with the personal trainers. We play Jenga and Cards Against Humanity. One of my good friends is a personal trainer and we hang out and have study parties. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING IN zouLIFE? I like that it’s a smaller community. We all know each other and it’s relaxing there. There’s just a mutual respect between everyone. Emily Bach is an amazing manager. HOW DID YOU BECOME A SPRAY TAN TECHNICIAN? Working in California, out of the blue, I started working at a tanning salon. They taught me to spray tan there. When I applied here, it was honestly on a whim. WHAT WOULD TELL A CLIENT WHO IS NERVOUS TO TRY SPRAY TANNING? If someone’s nervous, we’ll put the solution on our arm. Clients are drawn to come here because we are so personal with them. Instead of standing in a booth or feeling like you might become orange, our solution doesn’t have alcohol in it, so it doesn’t dry your skin out. DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERVIEW ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BE A PART OF TEAM MIZZOU? I think enthusiasm and respect is a big part. Team Mizzou is such a tight community and we all support each other so much. This isn’t just a job. So much more can come from working here. The Pro Staff really push us to be leaders instead of just employees.

TEAM MIZZOU PROFILE: JACOB COGAN, GROUNDSKEEPER JACOB COGAN IS A JUNIOR PLANT SCIENCES – LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT MAJOR FROM WESTON, MISSOURI. HE HAS BEEN A TEAM MIZZOU MEMBER SINCE SPRING 2015. YOU MAY HAVE SEEN HIM OUT AND ABOUT ON THE MIZZOUREC GROUNDS, KEEPING THE FACILITY LOOKING BEAUTIFUL, BUT DID YOU KNOW HE ENJOYS FREESTYLE SKIING IN HIS FREE TIME? MEET JACOB! HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR MAJOR? I was a business major to begin with, but switched to engineering for a little while. Then I started working for a landscaping company at home. I’ve done that for the past two summers and I just really enjoyed it. I want to hopefully own my own landscaping company. I’m not sure where yet but probably around the Kansas City area. WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING AT MIZZOUREC OR IN CLASS, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? Most of the time, I’ll be hanging out with my friends. This year, I’ve had a few friends move in next to me. We come to the Rec and play basketball. We also like to find old movies to watch, either things we haven’t seen for a long time or never seen before. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM MIZZOU MEMORY? My very first day last year, it snowed about eight inches and we had to remove that. I hadn’t worked a single shift yet and I got called in. I think I came in at four that day and didn’t end up leaving until 11:30 or midnight and then had to come back the next morning to shovel snow. That definitely stands out! NAME A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF. I freestyle ski, like what’s on the X Games but not up to that level. A lot of people around here don’t really do that so it’s kind of cool. I have a little ski resort five minutes down the road from my house, a little momand-pop business they started up. But I didn’t really get into it until high school. A few of my friends had done it a few times so I decided to pick it up a little more seriously and got season passes. I’ve worked there the past four or five winters and still over winter break in college when I can. WHY SHOULD SOMEONE CONSIDER BEING A GROUNDSKEEPER AT THE REC? The way I look at it is that the Rec is here for me and they provide so many things for me to come enjoy and utilize, so I figured that was a way of giving back to the Rec and keeping it looking nice and up to standard. It was kind of my way of doing my part of giving back to it. MIZZOUREC.COM | 59

COREY IS A JUNIOR BROADCAST JOURNALISM MAJOR FROM FREEBURG, IL. HE’S BEEN A MEMBER OF TEAM MIZZOU SINCE SEPTEMBER 2013. YOU MAY HAVE SEEN HIM HARD AT WORK AROUND THE FACILITY BUT YOU MAY ALSO RECOGNIZE HIM AS A STUDENT REPORTER FOR KOMU. MEET COREY! WHY BROADCAST JOURNALISM? When I decided that I wasn’t going to become a professional athlete, I wanted to get as close to sports as I could. I thought this would be a good way to go about it. I was always a good writer and storyteller so it’s just kind of a natural fit. I’d like to work at MLB Network someday. But I’d be okay staying around St. Louis for a while, close to home. I would probably pass up a bigger job so I could stay close to home. WHAT OCCUPIES YOUR TIME OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL AND MIZZOUREC? Lots of KOMU hours! But I watch a lot of movies and when I’m home, I like to fish. I try to play golf too. I’ve played about 7 or 8 years. I play on the public courses around here like Lake of the Woods and L.A. Nickell mostly. I’ll have to try out Gustin, the University course. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SHIFT LOOK LIKE FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR? We do a little bit of everything. I think I’m engaged with more people around the facility on a day-today basis than a lot of people. I have to work in a lot of different areas. One moment I could be changing a light bulb or fixing a chair and the next I could be working on the pools and helping the plumber out. You have to be a jack-of-all-trades and know how to do a lot. DO YOU NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH MAINTENANCE TO BE HIRED? It definitely helps. I applied for Frontline and M&R. I had worked at a hardware store and helped with oil changes at a gas station before. [The Rec] said, “Oh, you’d be good for M&R.” It’s been pretty smooth. I was able to learn from my previous experience and that’s helped me here. WHAT QUALITIES SHOULD SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO WORK IN M&R POSSESS? You have to be able to keep yourself busy. There’s not always something broken. You need to know the things around the facility that you can take care of on a day-to-day basis. You have to be motivated and responsible.

SHIPP CREATIVE AND TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD Can you say what Team Mizzou and being a Top Tier award winner means to you? Being a Top Tier award winner was such an unexpected honor. After attending Spring Roar for three years, I watched as so many incredible and talented Team Mizzou members were honored with Top Tier awards and I didn’t expect to be among them this year. To me, being a Top Tier award winner on Team Mizzou means that I was able to make a contribution to the facility and be a part of its success! Since you work in a creative field and just graduated, how has your time at MizzouRec prepared you for “the real world?” Being able to work on the creative team at MizzouRec was one of the most relevant job opportunities I could have had while in school and it has been invaluable. My position as a Photographer at MizzouRec allowed me to gain practical experience while I was in school and has made me feel confident to start my first job as an Associate Art Director! What was your favorite part of being a Team Mizzou member? My favorite part of Team Mizzou was getting to know the other Team Mizzou members so well during my time at Mizzou. There’s a certain kind of loyalty to MizzouRec among Team Mizzou members, and because of that I was able to work with the same familiar faces for a number of years. MIZZOUREC.COM | 65

ALEX VAENBERG, CLASS OF 2011

TigerX Instructor & Marketing Intern POST GRAD PROFILE Current City: St. Louis, MO Employment: Nestlé Purina

Team Mizzou awards received: Employee of the Year 2010

I have spent the last 4 years working in Brand Marketing within HR at Nestlé Purina, and prior to that, I did a short stint in advertising. I’m based out of St. Louis at the World Headquarters, and I get to bring my dog to work! When I’m not at the office, I’m carrying on with everything TigerX has taught me as a yoga instructor in St. Louis. After going into remission from cancer myself, I became certified as a Cancer Exercise Specialist through the Cancer Exercise Training Institute to instruct yoga for cancer patients. This has been an incredibly rewarding opportunity. HOW DID YOUR TEAM MIZZOU EXPERIENCE PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER MIZZOU? I spent all 4 years of my college experience working at MizzouRec growing into my character as a TigerX instructor. This was the beginning of my ability to hone my public speaking skills — something I do frequently in the workforce. Teaching at MizzouRec taught me how to think on the fly, adapt to different audiences, and it gave me the unique chance to help others develop. I know it’s overstated, but teamwork is such a critical lesson in life. Learning how to work with others who are different from you is something you’ll do for the rest of your career.

HENRY HERMES, CLASS OF 2015

Tiger Swim Instructor, Brewer Station Frontline, & Strength Frontline POST GRAD PROFILE Current City: Breckenridge, CO Employment: Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center

What’s one thing you’d change about your time at MizzouRec? I would have applied first thing during my freshman year.

I joined the BOEC in November working as an Adaptive Ski Instructor for the 20152016 season. I’m back with the BOEC this summer facilitating adaptive rafting, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and cycling for clients with disabilities, special needs and experienced barriers to outdoor and therapeutic recreation. I love my life and job here in Breck and can’t thank Team Mizzou enough for preparing me for this opportunity.

MEGAN GRAEF, CLASS OF 2006

TigerX Instructor & Facility Frontline POST GRAD PROFILE

Current City: San Francisco, CA Employment: Account Director, DDB San Francisco

Favorite Team Mizzou memory?

Spring Roar was always a blast.

I enjoy working in advertising and work a lot. I’ve moved a lot for my career. In my free time I love to run and hang out with my 7 yr old lab/boxer mix Johnny Cash. I pursue a lot of passion projects on the side, most recently starting a podcast called Champagne & Frozen Eggs. MIZZOUREC.COM | 67

WHAT’S ON YOUR SUMMER/FALL PLAYLIST?

WHAT’S ON YOUR SUMMER/ FALL PLAYLIST?

I seriously crank the speakers for Kacey Musgraves lately. Like, I wake up in the morning with one of her songs already stuck in my head.

I have been digging Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats lately, but I am always in the mood for NeedtoBreathe and the Infamous Stringdusters.

Breakfast: Ernie’s Cafe Lunch: Agave Dinner: Agave Happy Hour: Agave I would’ve said Agave for breakfast too if they were open. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Embrace change - it may be a blessing in disguise. Most things you worry about never happen.

YOU’RE HAPPIEST WHEN...? In the early mornings of summer when I have about an hour before work to enjoy breakfast and sit outside on my deck to read in solitude.

IF YOU COULD SWITCH YOUR JOB FOR A WEEK WITH ANYONE ELSE AT MIZZOUREC, WHOSE JOB WOULD YOU WANT? I would probably trade with Kate to see how much she deals with and know, from her perspective, how I could better help her through my own job.

YOU’RE HAPPIEST WHEN...? ...under the stars, deep in the Grand Canyon, closest friends by my side and only the faint sound of an airplane way over head to break the silence. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR COLLEGIATE RECREATION? I see MizzouRec expanding to offer more facilities for more students. Maybe offsite rec complexes, maybe expanding on-site, but always offering the best service and facility in the country!

(Spoiler alert: she said “yes.”) (But wait, there’s more: they’re eloping to Vegas in August!) 7. MOI FAQS:

Thanks to our partners at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, athletic training services are available to RecSports and Club Sports athletes and MizzouRec members at no charge.

CAN I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN ATHLETIC TRAINER?

WHERE DO I GO TO SEE AN ATHLETIC TRAINER?

Of course! If they aren’t in their offices when you stop by, you can schedule an appointment by emailing Alex at williamsalex@health. missouri.edu and Nic at philpotn@health.missouri.edu. If you’re a Club Sports athlete, email Alex, and if you’re a RecSports athlete, email Nic. If you’re not an athlete but you are a MizzouRec member, you can email either to set up an appointment.

The athletic training offices are located off Court 10 in Brewer Fieldhouse. If you’re a Club Sports or RecSports athlete, one of the athletic trainers might already be at your practice or competition. Nic and Alex are often on Stankowski Field taking care of athletes.

ARE THE ATHLETIC TRAINERS PROFESSIONALS? You betcha- Nic and Alex are certified and experienced athletic trainers who are employed through the physical therapy department at MOI.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

MizzouRec is lucky to have such collaborative partnerships with organizations that push us to achieve more and aim higher. This spring we teamed up with Star Trac to host a Stair Mill Challenge in March, made space in the facility for our Missouri Orthopaedic Institute friends, tried out a couple of awesome bikes (impossible to pick one!) and welcomed the much-anticipated Octane Zero Runner to the MizzouRec Fitness Showcase. Talk about #squadgoals!

SHOWCASE SHOW-OFF

Guess it’s official...Missouri Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) is definitely a fixture in the facility! We love having Nic and Alex on-site for all of our sports medicine needs (and just in case). Check out the F.A.Q. on page 86 for more info on what our partnership has to offer.

The Octane Zero Runner is part of the current lineup in the MizzouRec Fitness Showcase and you HAVE to try it! The state-of-the-art design of the Zero Runner, which replicates a user’s natural form but without stressful impact, allows exercisers of all ages and abilities to run again!

DECISIONS ARE HARD!

We can’t be the best college rec facility in the country and not have awesome equipment. So when it was time to update our indoor cycling equipment in the spring, we brought in two bikes to demo for the Tiger Lair and the Cardio Gallery. While the jury is still out on the final verdict, new bikes will be in the facility sometime this fall! We love getting your feedback and involving you in the process. We can’t wait for you to take them for a spin!
