Our Values

RESPECT

Respect for one’s self and for others is the foundation of honor and the basis of integrity. A hallmark of our community is respect — for the process by which we seek truths and for those who engage in that process. Such respect is essential for nurturing the free and open discourse, exploration, and creative expression that characterize a university. Respect results in dedication to individual as well as collective expression of truth and honesty. Respect is demonstrated by a commitment to act ethically, to welcome difference, and to engage in open

MizzouRec has three additional guiding values. These statements are mere words until we integrate them as values in our individual lives and reflect them in our institutional policies and practices. We pledge ourselves to make them effective in the very fabric of our lives, our community, and all our relationships with others, thereby enhancing the development of individuals and the well-being of society.

exchange about both ideas and decisions.

DISCOVERY Learning requires trust in the process of discovery. Discovery often fractures existing world views and requires acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Therefore, the university must support all of its members in the lifelong process that is both challenging and rewarding. As we seek greater understanding and wisdom, we also recognize that knowledge itself has boundaries — what we know is not all that is.

RESPONSIBILITY A sense of responsibility requires careful reflection on one’s moral obligations. Being responsible imposes the duty on us and our university to make decisions by acknowledging the context and considering consequences, both intended and unintended, of any course of action. Being responsible requires us to be thoughtful stewards of resources — accountable to ourselves, each other, and the public we serve.

EXCELLENCE We aspire to an excellence which is approached through diligent effort, both individual and collective. Pursuing excellence means being satisfied with no less than the highest goals we can envision. Pursuing excellence involves being informed by regional, national, and global standards, as well as our personal expectations. We recognize and accept the sacrifices, risks, and responsibilities involved in pursuing excellence, and so we celebrate each other’s successes. We commit ourselves to this process in an ethical and moral manner. NATION 2

RELATIONSHIPS Our success depends on the quality of our interactions and the clarity of our communication with others. Forming, nurturing and maintaining positive relationships is the ideal outcome of our time together at work, in class and at leisure. To this end, MizzouRec works tirelessly to provide an outstanding environment to cultivate relationships that last a lifetime.

PHILANTHROPY MizzouRec has been given great gifts of support and wonderful resources from generations of students and administrators at MU. It is part of our culture to share appropriately and wisely with a variety of worthwhile causes and initiatives.

AUTHENTICITY In a world filled with brands, labels, expectations and images, it is important that each of us reserve time daily to connect to our true selves. Placing an organizational value on authenticity means that being genuine in our words and our deeds is important and a priority.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I FORGOT MY ID. CAN I GIVE YOU MY ID NUMBER?

DO I NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION FOR MAT PILATES CLASSES?

We must see a Mizzou Student ID, Mizzou Campus ID or MizzouRec-issued photo ID for every person who comes through the door. This is done to keep you and your identity safe. Double-check to make certain you have your ID it before you leave for the Rec, and put it right back in the same spot every time so you never have to miss a workout.

You only need to make reservations for any of our cycling or reformer Pilates classes. Those classes use machines, so space is limited. Stop by or give zouLIFE a call (573-884-6555) to make your reservation the day before or the day of. And if you like Pilates, give reformer a try!

CAN I STUDENT CHARGE AT THE REC? Yes, you sure can! You can student charge membership fees, classes and even spa services. Just make sure to check your monthly bill and know who is responsible for paying it.

I’M GETTING A WORKOUT IN AFTER CLASS. WHERE SHOULD I PUT MY STUFF? Store your stuff in one of the 96 lockers behind the Cardio Gallery, in a quarter locker outside the Jungle Gym or in a locker in the general locker rooms. (Make sure to bring a lock for the that one!) Don’t break a sweat looking for your stuff; lock it up and leave valuables at home!

I LOST SOMETHING. WHERE SHOULD I GO? All lost and found items are stored at Brewer Station. It’s the desk right across from the locker rooms. If you find something, bring it to Brewer or to the nearest Team Mizzou member.

I WANT TO HOST AN EVENT AT THE REC. WHERE DO I START? There are quite a few ways! A good place to start is the FAQ we’ve put together on page 20. You can also go to mizzourec.com/events to find everything you need to know about how to use our space. Lastly, email us at events@mizzourec.com or call (573) 884-5600 to get in touch with us about your event.

CAN I BRING A GUEST? Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: We love that people want to share their MizzouRec experiences with people close to them, and we want to help make that happen. However, we have the safety and security of our members in mind, and we can only accommodate guests at certain times of the week. Guests using the facility must be 18 years old and provide a photo ID. All other details can be found at mizzourec.com/guests. We also host Mizzou Family Nights several times per semester, which is an opportunity for your family (including children) to visit the Rec (see page 11). NATION

MIZZOU WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL REPRESENTS THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI IN THE CENTRAL INTERCOLLEGIATE DIVISION OF THE NATIONAL WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION. The team concluded this past year’s season with a fourth place finish at the National Tournament, the best outcome in program history. MWB players Carter Arey and alumnus John Gilbert competed on the Men’s U.S. National Team in July when it traveled to the World Championships in South Korea.

Over the years MWB has continued to mature into a prestigious and competitive program, with more and more recruits considering Mizzou. In addition to the team’s own training, MWB players and coaches recognize the importance of giving back to the community. Each year the program hosts the Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball Camp, which welcomes men and women ages 12-19 with a permanent disability of the lower extremity to learn fundamental skill development and strategies in team play. With this array of leadership and athletic opportunities, the MWB program contributes to the high standard of excellence here at Mizzou.

MIZZOU WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL made an impressive appearance on the

twenty-two of the best ways to stay healthy, active and fit at mizzou

MIZZOU[REC] 22 Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a challenge, especially when you leave home, become more independent, and get stressed. You may have heard of the “Mizzou 22,” the nickname given to the alleged “Freshman 15” weight gain experienced by some college students. We’re here to make the collegiate transition easier and to help you develop healthy, fun habits to lean on. We truly do strive to be the best part of your Mizzou day and your first choice for fun. Correction: first 22 choices for fun! BY MICHEALA SOSBY

TRY SOMETHING NEW. REALLY NEW.

Lace up and listen to the sound of calories crying as you exercise on one of our premiere cardio machines. Just added last spring, MizzouRec’s Fitness Showcase boasts the fitness industry’s latest and greatest cardio machines. In the Cardio Gallery, you’ll find a variety of treadmills, ellipticals, step mills and recumbent, upright and indoor cycling bikes. No need to skip your workout because of an urge to watch TV—you can catch up on your favorite shows straight from the screens on many of our cardio machines.

WORK HEALTHY

Positive peer pressure is a great weapon to have in your arsenal when going up against the Mizzou 22. If you work at MizzouRec, you’ll be welcomed into an active, healthy community that consists of our student staff, which we proudly call Team Mizzou. NATION

Sweat it out on the tennis courts like you’re at the U.S. Open and the Mizzou 22 won’t even be on your radar. The Mizzou Tennis Complex consists of six outdoor, lighted courts located off campus near Epple Field, and is open for use so long as you bring your own racquet and a ball.

5

LIFEWORKS Take on the Mizzou 22 at the barre during a Ballet class, or pirouette your way around it during a Jumps & Turns class. If you prefer to dance away your stress, LeisureU Lifeworks Dance classes are exactly what you need. With Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Jumps & Turns and Contemporary Dance classes offered each semester, you’ll get a fun, energetic workout every time you enter the studio.

4

TRACK & CHALLENGE WITH NETPULSEONE A new fitness app is in town. Its name is NetpulseOne, and it’s coming soon to the Rec’s cardio machines to help you tell the infamous Mizzou 22 to scram. You can download NetpulseOne directly to your phone and it will automatically sync with many of our machines, so you can track your workouts and participate in MizzouRec’s fitness challenges. You can log any other kind of workout you do, such as 30 minutes of basketball or 20 pull-ups. This app will also have a leader board and a social feed so you can offer encouragement to other members and see how your stats compare. Sync it to your MyFitnessPal account and you’ve got your nutrition and fitness digitally tracked in one place. Paying attention to what you’re eating and how you’re exercising is critical to staying healthy and fit.

Private swim lessons are also a great option if you’d like more one-on-one attention with an instructor to help meet your competitive or recreational needs. In addition to these programs, our 50-meter pool is open for lap swim daily.

AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Rock climbing has lots of benefits, including increased cardiovascular health, muscle tone, and weight loss. Scroggs Peak and Brewer Butte are MizzouRec’s in-house climbing facilities. MizzouRec also offers a series of climbing classes so you can learn the ropes before you get started. You can also take your training to the surrounding 1/3- mile track, or get your friends together for a pickup sand volleyball game on one of our four outdoor sand courts. Stankowski Field and the sand volleyball courts also remain lit until 12 AM daily, just in case your game goes into overtime.

On the Job

Want to know what Team Mizzou students really do? Meet a few of our best and brightest and learn about what they do on the job. More Team Mizzou Profiles can be found on our blog at mizzourec.com.

BRUCE DOUGHERTY HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH TEAM MIZZOU? I saw a Team Mizzou recruitment session announcement on Facebook. It seemed like a great place to work, and I thought it would be great for my major, so I went for it. HOW DOES WORKING AT THE REC COMPARE TO OTHER EMPLOYMENT OPEN TO STUDENTS? The flexible scheduling is really important to me. In addition to schoolwork, I hold three positions in my fraternity and I have an internship this semester, so it’s great to be able to swap shifts with someone in order to meet all of my commitments. WHAT POSITION DO YOU HOLD ON TEAM MIZZOU? I’m on the Events staff. We set up and tear down events hosted at the Rec Complex. We also make sure nothing bad happens during the event by providing security, and tending to any unanticipated needs that may come up during someone’s special occasion

WHAT ABOUT EVENTS STAFF INTERESTED YOU? I like working with customers and the people involved with the event. We try to give them the best experience possible here at the Rec Complex. We want to take every correct measure to make sure people enjoy themselves, but we also have to make sure they follow the rules. There’s an element of risk management. WHAT QUALITIES OR SKILLS HELP SOMEONE BE SUCCESSFUL HERE? You interact with people from a wide range of backgrounds, so you need diverse social skills. You need to be somewhat intuitive so you can assess who’s having a good day and who’s not. That can help you approach them in a way that helps you do your job better, and maybe makes them feel better. Working events, you need to be both patient and alert. Things may seem like they’re at a standstill, but you need to remain ready because something can change at any time. Working an event requires both cooperation and control.

HEATHER FINN WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE REC? I’ve been doing a lot of hiking and exploring the trails around Columbia. I’m also just trying to get involved as much as I can with journalism. I worked at The Maneater last year, and this semester I’ll be at The Missourian. WHAT ARE YOUR DUTIES AS ASSISTANT DESIGNER? A lot of what I do is designing signage that promotes what we have going on at the

EVENTS • MAJOR: PARKS & REC, SPORTS MANAGEMENT • TEAM MIZZOU SINCE 2012 DO YOU THINK YOUR EXPERIENCE HERE WILL BE HELPFUL TO YOUR CHOSEN PROFESSION? Definitely. My goal is to someday be the Athletic Director at a college or university. Working at a facility like this is a great first step down that career path. I’ll try for Events Lead to get more experience. You can’t go wrong working at MizzouRec, whether it’s Events, RecSports, or down in the Pump Room. You will come away from that experience better prepared for your future. CAN YOU OFFER ANY TIPS OR ADVICE TO OTHER STUDENTS WHO MIGHT ASPIRE TO BECOMING A TEAM MIZZOU MEMBER? The hardest part about working here is just getting in. It’s a very competitive and very selective process. If there are more than 200 applicants, maybe 30 or 40 will be selected. But, it’s worth the effort. If you’re lucky enough to be selected, embrace it. Abide by the Team Mizzou rules, be sociable but maintain high character. The camaraderie with your teammates and the assistance and understanding of the pro staff will help set you on the path to achieving your goals.

ASSISTANT DESIGNER • MAJOR: JOURNALISM, MAGAZINE EDITING • TEAM MIZZOU SINCE 2013

Rec. I work with all of the different areas to get all of the events and programs covered. Beyond that, I do branding work, like developing logos and such, and designing stuff like TigerX passes. I also do design work for MizzouRec NATION magazine. WHAT MAKES TEAM MIZZOU A GREAT FIT FOR YOU? The Rec recognizes that you’re a student first so that makes the job really easy to balance with school. But beyond that it’s very applicable. Though I don’t see myself doing graphic design for the rest of my life, I definitely think it will apply to the kind of job that I’ll have someday.

WHAT ATTRIBUTES OR QUALITIES HAS YOUR JOB HELPED YOU TO DEVELOP? Professionalism, for sure. Obviously everything at the Rec is done in such a professional way. The staff have high standards, so you end up holding yourself to those higher standards. I’ve also learned responsibility and timeliness. I have to stay on top of everything because I’m working with so many other people and they’re depending on me. If I don’t get my work done, then they can’t get their work done. And teamwork. We’ve got a pretty awesome creative team!

The only thing better than having some of the best and brightest students on Team Mizzou is having them return to MizzouRec as members of our professional staff after they graduate.

AMY TESCH What was your role on Team Mizzou? I started as Membership Frontline, then became a Membership Specialist and after that became a Membership Lead over my four years of being a part of the student staff. What were the greatest skills or life lessons that you gained from your Team Mizzou experience? How to interact with people in different situations. With so many people coming into the facility, you’ll face different challenges as you’re trying to meet everyone needs. I learned how to adapt to each of those challenges as they came up. What was your favorite part about being a member of Team Mizzou? My favorite part was definitely meeting so many different people. Among other Team Mizzou staff, Pro Staff and members, I made a lot of friends here.

ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR • DIRECTOR’S EXCELLENCE AWARD What was the transition from Team Mizzou to Pro Staff like?

for me to continue learning from them as a professional staff member.

It was pretty easy. I had worked with [Director] Diane [Dahlmann] on things like [Team Mizzou Advisory Council], so I had already established a relationship with her, which made things a lot easier when I became a professional staff member. I also had already developed relationships with other professional staff members so it was pretty easy to slide into the role. I’m now the Assistant to the Director, so I assist Diane with anything she needs, and I am also in charge of special projects and I assist with HR, assessments, and Team Mizzou as well.

What do you enjoy about being a member of the Pro Staff?

Why did you want to become a member of MizzouRec’s Pro Staff? I felt like I still had a lot to learn, and Diane and our higher-level professional staff have experienced so many different things both with the renovation [in 2005] and the various aspects of their jobs that I thought it would be beneficial

MATT FLEMING What was your role on Team Mizzou? I was a Club Sports Lead and a Senior Event Specialist. As a Club Sports Lead, I supervised all practices, games, and home events. As a Senior Event Specialist I was frontline staff for events and did the associated office work required when events are scheduled. What were the greatest skills or life lessons that you gained from your Team Mizzou experience? Patience and organization, definitely, and also time management skills. I was a fulltime student and had both those positions at the same time, and I was also taking 18 credit hours during my last two years. I had to figure out how to manage my time wisely in order to effectively do both jobs and still keep my top focus on school.

Team Mizzou Alumni

I like that I still get to work with Team Mizzou and within MizzouRec. MizzouRec provides such a unique opportunity for employment. And I really appreciate the fact that we are constantly adapting and changing to stay ahead. How do you hope to help Team Mizzou students? With assessments on Team Mizzou we are working on continuously making the Team Mizzou experience worthwhile. So I hope that by working with Team Mizzou on assessment processes we are able to adapt and grow to what the student staff members need.

SPORTS & COMPETITION COORDINATOR • GIDEON F. ROTHWELL SERVICE AWARD

What was your favorite part about being a member of Team Mizzou? The focus on professional development was very important to me, from the beginning of my time with Team Mizzou during the hiring process up until after I graduated when I was given the opportunity to intern and eventually become a graduate assistant. What was the transition from Team Mizzou to Pro Staff like? It was interesting to learn how to go from being the student who is managed to being the person to manage the student. I had to learn how to manage some staff members who are my peers. I worked alongside them and was now responsible for scheduling them and helping them.

development and how I wanted to mold my professional skills for what I want to do in my future career. What do you enjoy about being a member of the Pro Staff? The camaraderie that we have. It’s nice working with people that I like and who I’ve worked around for several years. We get along and the MizzouRec way has helped us all be on the same page and know how each other think. How do you hope to help Team Mizzou students? By giving them the opportunities that I was given as a student, so enabling them to use their skills as opposed to managing them too much.

Why did you want to become a member of MizzouRec’s Pro Staff? I knew that I wanted to finish my graduate degree at the university. This was the best fit for me as far as professional

BEHIND THE SCENES

MEET FIT TECH 74

NATION

The doctors are in. BY MICHEALA SOSBY

INTRODUCING THE LATEST FITNESS TECHNOLOGY INTO OUR WORKOUT SPACES CALLS FOR AN OUTSTANDING EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE TEAM.

What it takes to be on the Fit Tech crew:

Our Team Mizzou Fitness Technicians work behind the scenes to diagnose troubled equipment and get it back on the floor for member use as quickly as possible. Star Trac, Octane Fitness and Free Motion certify and train our Fit Techs to operate on each piece of equipment.

Perform solid mechanical and electrical aptitude and troubleshooting

With so much traffic on our machines, these Fit Techs are busy keeping our equipment in its best condition.

MITCH WORKMAN, Equipment Maintenance Mechanic (Pro Staff) “Individual companies come in and certify us to work on the equipment. When a machine isn’t working, we use a trial and error process to fix it. We have to know how to use the machines to see if everything works, make sure all the nuts and bolts are in place. We’re in charge of maintenance on machines throughout the whole facility.”

ZACH FETTER, Team Mizzou Fit Tech “Not only is my job mechanical, it’s also technical. It involves resetting computers on machines, scanning them and troubleshooting. It’s not just a screwdriver and wrench kind of job. My favorite part of my job is problem solving, and it is never boring.”

DAVE LABEAUME, Team Mizzou Fit Tech “People would be surprised at how much customer service we do. We’re often the place of first report when something is broken, not working, and sometimes people aren’t happy about that messing up their workout. So, sometimes we’re working on fixing that relationship before we’re fixing the equipment.”

Diagnose problems with equipment, assess the extent of the problem, and make decisions to repair, replace parts, and recommend product replacement when necessary Provide the capacity for analyzing, evaluating, and diagnosing complex equipment problems in a timely fashion Maintain detailed service reports Lead all preventative maintenance related projects Maintain electronic inventory records and repair logs Perform daily and weekly safety checklist on fitness equipment Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Well-developed organizational skills
