EDITORIAL Welcome to our November issue, just one more before we get a month’s break and do I need it? I’m sure the months are getting shorter, no sooner have we got one issue done and dusted than it’s time to start on the next. I’m just glad it’s monthly and not weekly, there just wouldn’t be enough hours in the day. We’re still actively looking for volunteers to join us to ease the pressure, so if you have any IT skills and a few hours to spare each month then please do get in touch. By the time you get to read this I’ll be a year older and I’d have had a day in London at the Olympic Park Velodrome as a birthday treat from my daughter, watching some of the London 6 Day event live, the rest I’ll have to watch on the TV, as distributing this issue put paid to me going 2 further days this year. Zac is still with us but for how much longer is an uncertainty, so every day with him is precious. Just enough space left to ask, ‘Where ‘s Zac?’

Been back to the vets for a 6 monthly check and they’ve ok’d me for more pills so I must be here for a while longer yet. Think I must be going a bit senile though as I’m told I’ve started barking at my dinner for no good reason - strange! Sad news to hear one of my canine brotherhood, Bow, passed away in very sad circumstances after getting lost, but glad to hear another one who was lost, Bear, has been reunited with his family. Well that’s it for another month hopefully I’ll be back again in November.

KEN AND FIONA WELCOME YOU TO

Christmas seems very far away, but it’s coming! I thought you’d like to get a step ahead and make your own mincemeat, as it tastes so much better when it has matured. Home-made mincemeat, which is nothing like that anonymous brown slurry you buy, is both delicious and easy to make. I adore this recipe, it's one of Claire Macdonald's, and contains no suet, so is perfect for vegetarians. We don't need the extra calories, and the mincemeat is so good, it doesn't need the fat. The recipe below makes a fair amount, but make it now, and you will find it goes quickly if you give it to people as preChristmas presents, or make mince pies for friends, school, church or just for fun. (Just make sure you keep some for a Christmas pudding ice cream) It also keeps for a year, going dark and alcoholic. I just refresh mine with more alcohol, and consider it to be "vintage". The recipe below specifies quantities of raisins, peel, sultanas and currants. For simplicity, I generally add the lot together (2lb 10z/1.180kg) and buy bags of mixed fruit, adding extra peel to make up the difference! Kinloch Mincemeat 1lb 8oz/700g raisins 6oz/175g chopped mixed peel 12oz/350g sultanas 6oz/175g toasted flaked almonds 6 medium sized eating apples, unpeeled, cored and chopped 12oz/350g soft dark brown sugar 8oz/250g dried apricots, chopped 1tsp each of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice grated rind and juice of 2 oranges plus 2 lemons ¼ pint/150ml brandy, whisky or rum (this is a minimum!) Mix everything together well and leave in a large covered container, stirring once or twice a week for three weeks. Chop it to the size you want*, then pot and seal in jars, or put it into a couple of ice cream tubs with lids. *I prefer a fine textured mincemeat and can’t be bothered to cut everything by hand, so blitz it all in a food processor in batches until the individual pieces are about the size of chocolate chips. You can do this at any time before potting it! Feeding with extra alcohol is also a bonus…. For more decadent recipes, go to https://katespuddings.blogspot.co.uk

MINSTER W.I. October was our craft and social evening. Members enjoyed making Christmas cards, painting Bondaweb, knitting and crocheting poppies for the Minster 2108 WW1 commemoration and playing darts. Nicky had asked members to bring along small hotel samples of toiletries that she made into packs that we donated to the Oasis women’s refuge in Margate. It was a lovely social evening and Zara won the limerick competition about the WI!!!! 14/11/17 12/12/17 19/12/17

Traffic Survey – Minster The traffic survey in July revealed that between 350 and 500 vehicles per hour were counted entering and leaving Tothill Street making total vehicles movements approaching 1000 per hour. The details were published in the Minster Matters. We are going to carry out three more surveys at different locations in the village to see the effect of the traffic on the village. The dates are 31st October and the 2nd & 9th of November. Can you help us? We would be grateful. If you can spare a few hours on any of the dates to count vehicles please email minstersfuturematters@gmail.com or leave a message on 822 559.

November 2017

Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of Key Points 3rd October, 2017

• The Chairman thanked Cllr. Crow-Brown for his assistance in our negotiations with the TDC Chief Executive, Madeline Homer, in relation to renewing the agency payments from TDC. This enables us to continue with a high standard of maintenance and cleanliness in the parish. Further details are awaited in relation to the car parks and public toilets but the hope is that we will take over the running of these facilities; this will be taken into account in the budget setting for next year.

• The

Community Warden’s report detailed how numerous vehicles have been entered in Minster over the past three weekends and items including cash, laptops, satnavs and sunglasses have been taken. A number of images of a male have been captured on CCTV systems and forwarded to the police. Investigations are ongoing. Similar crimes have been reported in St. Nicholas and Monkton over the same period. The male has also been seen to try resident’s front doors.

• The Chairman reported that she had met with Chief Inspector Adley to express her concerns at the late withdrawal of police objections at the hearing of the Licensing Committee on 8th August when McDonalds licence was extended to allow all night opening. (As opposed to just drive through). The Chief Inspector explained that the company’s legal dept. had challenged the evidence put forward in terms of proving that those involved in anti-social behaviour emanated from McDonalds. She apologised for not notifying the parish council of the withdrawal prior to the meeting and asked that residents be reminded of the importance of reporting incidents of antisocial behaviour and crime so that any future issues with the restaurant can be addressed. On line crime reporting should make this process a little easier. • It is anticipated that a new Police Community Support Officer for the villages will be in place by the end of the month and he will be an experienced officer from elsewhere in Thanet. • The local school are setting up a project to create a forest school, using some of the grounds leased to the school by the parish council. They are currently in the process of seeking grant funding to assist with this. • The Chairman reminded everyone that the annual Fireworks display is to be held on Friday 3rd November. • A complaint had been received about parking and speeding vehicles in the Butts Field Estate at peak times. The Chairman has spoken with the Headteacher and parents will be reminded yet again about the need for safe driving and considerate parking in the vicinity of the school. It was resolved that TDC should be reminded about the need to enforce yellow lines and that police/PCSO presence will be requested at peak times to act as a preventative measure.

• The Chairman expressed concerns about the huge amount of litter left around the skate park despite two litter bins being available; she asked the meeting to consider ideas as to how to tackle the problem. It was agreed that we will consider what enforcement may be available in the form of fines, that Minster Matters will include an item on this issue, we will explore the purchase of novelty waste bins to encourage their use, and that a sign will be erected about dropping litter and that the chairman will consider asking pupils at our school to design it. Surely at least one of these will work! • Sunley Estates have notified us that they are considering building a house on the open space in Hill House Drive. Residents have been canvassed for their views and they are strongly against any development on this site, as are all members of the parish council. Sunleys have been informed of the strong opposition to this suggestion. This is particularly disappointing as we have maintained this land for years and legal processes were in motion to hand the land over to the parish council in 2011, but for some reason Sunleys ceased negotiations. In addition, we have sent an application to KCC to apply for Village Green status for the open space which, if successful, would protect the land I perpetuity. • Cllr. Quittenden reported that TDC had advised a recent Thanet Assn. of Local Councils meeting that they will be closing the majority of public toilets in Thanet. Blue Flag beaches will retain the facilities but in all other cases the local authority expect retail outlets and restaurants to provide this facility. The Twinning Association still has 6 seats left on the coach trip to Brighton in January to see Holiday on Ice. • There were no questions from the public but a useful suggestion about fun bins for the skate park was made; also mention was made about the bags of rubbish left on the corner of Taylor Road. This will be investigated.

BRONZE AWARD Back in March this year, the students of Looking Ahead who help with the running of the grounds at Minster Abbey, where they help maintain the lovely gardens , entered the Kent Wildlife Trust’s “Wildlife Garden Competition”. It was the first time they had entered and they were delighted to pick up a Bronze Award. The students have been encouraged to give wildlife a helping hand and they worked hard to achieve this by building bird boxes, bug houses and positioning bird feeders to attract an abundance of bird life. They also introduced a wild flower meadow, which has attracted very any species of insects including some rare species of butterflies and bees. They are delighted at receiving this award and will be working toward trying for a Silver Award next year!! Well done to the Looking Ahead group on gaining this Bronze Award.

Minster Matters HANDEL IN BROADSTAIRS

Thanet Festival Choir and the Seventy Chamber Choir are joining forces in November to perform Handel’s thrilling oratorio Israel in Egypt in the beautiful setting of Holy Trinity Church Broadstairs. Israel in Egypt tells the story of the plagues of Egypt and the Exodus, as set down in the Book of Exodus and in Psalms 77, 105, and 106. Unlike most oratorios, the plot is not driven by individual passions and actions but presents and celebrates the story of the people of Israel. The Chorus, unusually, is the protagonist, driving the dramatic story forwards. In fact fully three quarters of the work consists of choral movements, some for double chorus, with the solo and duet arias playing a relatively minor - although important - role. As one might expect from Handel, Israel in Egypt is a musically inventive and very powerful work, in which the composer made use of every choral texture in his repertoire: it is full of word painting, where the sound of the music imitates the imagery of the text, thereby enhancing the dramatic effect and sense of excitement. A truly dramatic and exciting evening is in prospect for singers and audience alike. Accompaniment will be provided by the Thanet Festival Orchestra and there will be six top-class Soloists, some of whom are regular performers with highly-regarded groups such as The Sixteen. The concert will be conducted by Clifford Lister, Music Director of both choirs. The concert takes place on Saturday 4th November, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £15 on the door and £12 in advance, obtainable from choir members, by telephoning 01304 620560 or online via Thanet Festival Choir’s website www.thanetfestivalchoir.org (PayPal).

Minster Matters

Introducing some of your Parish Councillors Cllr. Penny Gimes When I became Chairman of Minster Parish Council I introduced myself in a brief article in this publication. It is now the turn of some of my fellow councillors to tell you a little more about themselves. Cllr. Alan Jones I was born in Liverpool a certain number of years ago and have lived in the Centre of Minster for 22 years. I was an NHS Trauma Specialist for over 30 years. I trained at St Andrews University in Fife in Scotland and became a Whole Time Consultant in A/E. As well as this regular job, I spent 30 years as a Volunteer Doctor attending all manner of Trauma and Medical Incidents for Ambulance, Police, Fire, Lifeboat, Coastguard, and Search and Rescue in Avon, Suffolk and Kent. After retiring from this life I worked for H.M. Courts Judiciary for 10 years. During this period, I wanted to continue to help the community in which I live, so volunteered to go on the Parish Council when the was a vacancy. Through this work I hope to support the Parishioners to look after such a marvellous village and parish and to try and keep the parish flourishing for all residents. Cllr. Ray Owen I’m a Sandwich lad born and bred, 70yrs old this October. I have lived in Minster for 35 years with wife Jenny, 2 children and now have 5 grandchildren plus Zac (Minster Matters Sub Editor for Pets). I was a Chatham Dockyard Apprentice, qualified Motor Transport Fitter, and have had a variety of employers. I finally ended up at British Bakeries as a Charge Hand Fitter & took additional training there as a Computer Technician. I joined MPC as a Cllr in 1983/4 for 3 years but work commitments meant I didn't have time to do the position justice, I also did 2 years as Clerk to MPC in 2003/5. I became Editor of Minster Matters in 2006, I sit on the Show Committee, I am the Business Assn Secretary and I monitor the village CCTV on behalf of the Parish Council. I also have numerous other hobbies & interests including running a number of online mainly ‘reuse’ groups and collecting diecast models. I am involved in all manner of other activities in and around Minster. I ran in Ramsgate with the Olympic torch in 2012

November 2017 thanks to residents of Minster who nominated me. I became a Parish Councillor for a second time to try to help improve our village and the lives of our residents. Cllr. John Quittenden I was elected to Minster Parish Council in 2010 where I now serve as Chairman of the Finance committee and Chairman of Highways and Transport committee. I was born in 1944 in Mottingham and educated in main stream Secondary School then spent 5 years at a South London Technical College. I entered the motor trade in 1959 and became self-employed in 1972. I moved to Minster in 1982 when I bought Minster Garage. I still live at Minster Garage with my wife Barbara and I retired in 2014. Now my son Martin owns and runs Minster Garage still making it a family business. I love Minster dearly, and will always do my best to retain its village atmosphere, but we do live in 2017 with all the problems that brings. I carry out volunteer work in and around the village. I look after the High Street Car Park and tidy the old Cemetery and the Highways of the village. I am also Vice Chairman of Minster Twinning Association and President of the Royal British Legion Club. Anyone can always contact me on jhquittenden@hotmail.com Cllr. Dominique Vaughan I moved to the village 20 years ago when I changed teaching jobs. I was looking for a close knit community as I wanted to be "involved in things". I was introduced to the Flower Show Committee, within about 3 months of being here, when a work colleague gave me a lift as my car was being serviced; and the Playhouse followed a couple of months later. I am still an active member of both of these village groups. My daughter considers Minster to be her home, having attended school and Rainbows, and is getting herself involved in groups as well. It may have been reluctant at first, but now it is an active choice. I became a Councillor when a co-opted position came up. I reckoned after 19 years of being here it was time to up my own game and step up. I enjoy the meetings and hearing what really matters to the people who live in and around the village. I know I work outside of the village and that does impact on my availability, I look forward to being retired and doing more in the village that I love.

November 2017 Cllr. Tony Goodman I was born in London but moved to Ramsgate in 1964. I got a job as an apprentice electrician at SEEBoard. I had various other jobs and then became a professional gliding instructor; this I did for 3 years and greatly enjoyed it. I moved on to work in schools and colleges looking after computers and then teaching IT. My hobbies include bell ringing and archery. I joined Minster Parish Council this year. Cllr. Malcolm Bubb I am 67 years old and have been married to Carol for 47 years. We have 3 sons and 7 grandchildren. We started our married life in Sturry and as the family grew, we moved to Herne Bay to a larger property. We moved to Minster in 2012, as we wanted to retire to a village community which was rich in social activities. I served 32 years in the Kent Fire Brigade, retired, then worked for 10 years for Kent Education Authority. My hobbies include gardening, reading, travelling and spending time with my grandchildren. Currently, I am Chair of the Minster Armbouts Cappel Twinning Association and also an active member of Minster Bowls Club. I joined Minster Parish Council 3 years ago to help maintain Minster as a lively, thriving village and to keep its identity as being a beautiful village and not become part of a bigger conurbation. Cllr. Susan Taylor I moved here 3 years ago from far away Ramsgate, currently work part time at TDC in the corporate income team, now in my 20th year. I am married and have one daughter who now lives in London. On arriving in Minster, TDC released the draft local plan, which as I had just moved to Greenhill Gardens was a big surprise, as the field behind was put forward for housing, this was when I started to work with the Parish Council, I helped design and deliver the leaflet for residents to complete as TDC had decided that most people could read the document (365 pages) and make comments all on line!!! I love being a Parish Cllr; we have very little power but try so hard to make the most of funds available to us and help as much as possible with any problems within the village, some decisions we make are not always welcomed by all but do we try. I also like the fact that Minster is still a village, with a fantastic community

from litter picking by residents, to the many activities available for all to join in (quiz night, great fun). I would like to work on keeping this alive, encouraging more residents to become involved in village life i.e. enter something in the summer fair, do a float, come to more events and help keep Minster a clean and wonderful place to live. (Cllrs. Bob Grove, Danny Day and Roy Bailey also sit on Minster Parish Council.)

New community social afternoons to launch at the Hussar Hotel next month “Your Time at the Hussar” will bring people together and promote social inclusion A brand new weekly social afternoon aimed at Thanet’s older 65s in on its way. “Your Time at the Hussar” will be officially launched at 12pm on Friday 3rd November and will take place each Friday afternoon from then on, at the historic Garlinge hotel. “Your Time” has been set up by the Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) – a project led by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau – in response to a study commissioned jointly by the British Red Cross and the Co-op in 2016, which revealed parts of Thanet to be among the top 39 loneliest places to live in Britain. The concept of “Your Time” is very simple: we want to bring people together. It cannot be emphasised enough how much of a positive impact a simple weekly social afternoon, rooted at the centre of the community, can have on one’s life. When the Hussar Hotel said we could hold Your Time on their premises, we knew it was a great opportunity to address loneliness among older people living on the Isle. The Friday afternoons will include tea and coffee, and a traditional fish and chip lunch, at reasonable prices – and pool and darts absolutely free of charge. We have been asked whether you have to be over 65 to come along, and our answer is ‘not at all’! We’re looking forward to welcoming anyone who wants to come along. You can find out more about Your Time at the Hussar by calling Chris at the Thanet Volunteer Bureau on 01843 609336, emailing chris.scutt@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk, or by following the Thanet Community Support Partnership on Facebook and Twitter, via @ThanetCommunity.

Father and Son’s Barber Shop opens in Minster Some of you may know that on the Tuesday 26 September, a new barber shop opened in Minster called Father and Son’s. The man who owns the place, Spencer, is brilliant at cutting hair, he’s also really friendly. He cut my hair long before the barber shop opened and I couldn’t wait for him to open up here. It is where O’Shea’s restaurant used to be. When it finally opened, I went there on a Saturday morning and I was amazed at how great it was. The waiting room had lovely furniture, great wallpaper, several newspapers, magazines and a nice cosy fire place. I do advise going there; however it’s barbers for boys only. They play music, great songs. Also, like I said there are enough magazines and newspapers to entertain you while you’re waiting. If none of this catches your attention, if you think you already go to a better barber shop, then think again, because every Friday night (He might do it some Saturday afternoons as well) there is FREE beer. Yes, you can get free beer. Can your current barbers supply you with all of these things? Charlie Miles

MINSTER MATTERS NEEDS YOU!! Our appeal for volunteers to help produce this magazine is still ongoing, so please if you have a bit of IT knowledge and some spare time, do get it touch.

MOBILITY SCOOTERS & WHEELCHAIRS VILLAGE FREE LOAN SCHEME WE NOW DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!!! Many of you will be aware that Minster Matters runs a free short term loan scheme for Mobility Scooters and Wheelchairs in the village (we have 3 of each) - however up until now we have been able to house these at the Library but we were recently asked to remove them from the building. So now we are desperately looking for a small amount of undercover storage space to enable us to continue to operate this service. Failure to find a new home, very soon, may mean we will have to close down the facility and rehome the equipment. Can you help? Please contact the Editor on 07864 345 019 or email editor@minstermatters.org.uk.
