MINSTER MATTERS CALL FOR HELP

3

Minster Matters are still looking for someone (or two) to help us with our audio recording once a month, or again maybe every other month, at The Holiday Inn on a Tuesday evening. We just need you to watch that the recording is happening successfully on our laptop, noting any mistakes made by our volunteer readers on the supplied script, then delivering the recording and script to our audio editor. This usually takes about 1.5hrs from 7.30 to 9pm. Interested in helping us with this? Think you may be able to help but want more information? Then please do get in touch, we are waiting to hear from you! NORTHROP SERVICES Please ring/text us on 07864 345 019 KITCHEN & BATHROOM FITTING or email minstermatters@gmail.com

MOBILITY SCOOTERS AND WHEELCHAIRS Mobility scooters, wheelchairs, rollators and a few smaller disability aids are available for loan to Minster residents and members of their families. We will also consider requests from residents in neighbouring villages. We make no set charge but are open to receiving voluntary donations to help keep the equipment maintained. Thank you to everyone who has helped in some way to make this a success and if you or someone you know needs to borrow any of these then please do get in touch. We are still looking for a small amount of overspill storage space for up to 2 mobility scooters and possibly a couple of wheelchairs if anyone is able to help. Even space for 1 scooter would ease the pressure, thank you. Finally, we are in the market for a donation or two of ‘self-propelled’ wheelchairs, we’re often asked for these but we only have one which is out on a long term loan Please ring/text Ray on 07864 345 019, 07914 623 287 or email rayowen@gmail.com if you would like to borrow one of these at any time, or you have something you’d like to donate. Thank you.

SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Staff Training; from midday onwards on Thursday 28th March, Wednesday 24th April and Wednesday 15th May. Bank Holidays; all day - Good Friday 19th April and Easter Monday 22nd April. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service direct on 111 to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening issues, please dial 999 as normal. MISSED APPOINTMENTS - GP’s UP! NURSE’S DOWN! 31 patients did not attend their GP’s appointment and 39 did not attend their Nurse’s appointment, so that’s still 70 missed and wasted appointments, costing the NHS £11,200. So, a plea, to all our patients: Don’t need it? Cancel it. It’s so easy: by phone, text or online - just do it, please. FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY All practices have to submit a monthly report to NHS England of their “Friends and Family” responses and we report these figures regularly in this newsletter for your information: Last month A total of patients responded to “Would you recommend our Practice” as follows: Extremely likely/Likely 87%; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 6%; Unsure/Don’t know 7%. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049.

SPEEDWATCH Since my retirement from running Minster’s last Fresh Bakery (there used to be four), I have been able to observe more of day to day life and seeing some vehicles tearing up Tothill Street, most probably over the speed limit, divers on mobiles, no seat belts etc. I’ve a wish to make life safer for everybody. Speedwatch works! In villages across Kent repetitive speeders have lost their licences after driving through speed traps too many times, but on the whole, it acts as a reminder that we have speed limits for a reason and we are all safer, when we all comply. If we can attract another 6-8 potential volunteers, we can make Minster a safer place for young and old to live. We can constantly be reminding drivers week on week, that there are consequences to speeding in Minster. So what does it take? You would commit to a maximum of 2 hours per week, be able to pass an online test, set by Kent Police(not hard, but exacting), we don’t go out in the rain or times of other bad weather, but we need to be out in Minster 2 or 3 times a week, in different locations. If we can do this the Speedwatch works. The age range of most speed watchers tends to be people of retirement age, but there is no reason why younger people with a community spirit cannot get involved. At the moment I go and help with other speed watch groups in Thanet, we do have events in Minster, but not enough to make a difference. Am I a “Do Gooder” with too much time on my hands? If you think so, that’s fine. On the whole there’s a lovely bunch of people, young and old, in Minster, however we have a few selfish drivers who ruin it for the rest. Remember ‘More Haste, Less Speed! For more information contact Rob Searle, Speedwatch Coordinator, on 07491 621 949 Thank you for reading, please come and join us. Bruce Trent

CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND UPDATE The Committee of The Old Vicarage Events Group recently met up with Debbie Chapman of Louie’s Helping Hands Charity, where they were delighted to present a cheque for £2,500.66 The cheque was very gratefully received and will help immensely with the ongoing build of the new Special School at Quex Park. We wish them every success with the build and forthcoming opening of the school and are happy to raise further funds at future events for this very worthwhile charity.

Thomas Hunter Goldie ‘HUNTER’ 11-7-1929 – 9-1-2019 Joyce and Family would like to thank all members of our family, friends and neighbours for all the kindness that has been shown to us. Thank you also for the messages of support, cards, flowers and donations which will be going to Minster Surgery. Special thanks go to Dr. Stern, Dawn and Claire for the support and care Hunter received from them all through his illness. Thank you all again. Yours sincerely, Joyce, Andrew and Family

Welcome to this month’s slot. May I take this opportunity to remind residents of the increased amount of cold calling we have in Thanet. There are a number of reports of persons going door knocking offering roof and driveway work. This ranges from small repairs and cleaning to full blown laying of driveways. Generally this service is offered at a reasonable cost but once complete the price rises to an extortionate amount. Police have issued a five-point check-list: 1. Don't allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out.

2. If you ask them to leave and they don't, call the police on 999. 3. Don't ever go to a bank or cashpoint with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this. 4. Use reputable traders who are members of the KCC Trading Standards approved-trader scheme, run in partnership with Checkatrade. 5. Ask for quotes in writing and check that the trade’s person is from the company they say they are from.

MINSTER WI February’s meeting was a craft and social. The NFWI is a founding member of The Climate Coalition (TCC), a group of over 100 organisations and over 15 million people working for action on climate change. Every February the NFWI encourages each WI to ‘Show the Love’ for all they want to protect from climate change. Members could choose to do book folding, tile painting, making felt decorations which all had a heart theme - refreshments were a variety of delicious homemade cakes. The 133rd Minster Show will be held on Saturday 20th July from 1pm and the Committee are making many additions and changes this year. We wish to involve the surrounding villages more and will be holding a Tug of War competition hopefully with teams from the villages. There will be several new classes in the Show Tent to include Lego models, container displays and a valuable prize draw for entries, as well as the more usual produce classes. There will also be more games for children and adults, including a coconut shy, tin can alley and many more together with the usual Parade into the ground. Arrangements are under way for a Vintage Motor Cycle display, exhibition stalls and the usual collection of various local organisations and trade stalls. More information to come. The Committee want to make this a special fun day for all the family and are very grateful for the immense amount of local help it receives but we are always looking for more. If you are willing to help, before or on the day, say to run a stall or help with the event, please speak with Karen at Attwells Newsagents

Hello MM team, On a recent trip to visit some old Minster friends in the Seychelles, we came across this poster and thought it was worth sharing with all our friends still in Minster. With all the terrible rubbish blighting our roadsides, maybe it's timely.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION Over the years the Twinning Association has accumulated many items that have been presented to us by our friends in Armbouts-Cappel, an expression of entente cordiale between the two villages. Although the items have been well looked after over the years there has never been a permanent place to display them. After a Committee Meeting in late 2018 we decided to rectify this situation. The Village Hall Committee kindly gave us an area in the entrance hall and we commissioned Chris Hogben to build a display cabinet that would blend sympathetically with the existing furniture. On Saturday the 9th February we had the official unveiling of the cabinet, carried out by Penny Gimes, Chairman of the Parish Council and Malcolm Bubb, Chairman of the Twinning Association and attended by members of the Committee. We would like to thank the Village Hall Committee for their backing of this project and Eric James for his help and assistance, particularly with setting up the curtains for the unveiling, also to Penny Gimes for giving up her time on a Saturday evening. Next time you are in the Village Hall, or nearby, do have a look at the various artefacts we can now display for all to see. FORTHCOMING EVENTS: SATURDAY 9th MARCH A QUIZ EVENING AT THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Teams of up to 8 persons, just £5 per person including a buffet. 7.30pm for 8.00pm Booking essential on 07745 683 466 SUNDAY 30th JUNE DAY TRIP TO ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL, FRANCE, just £10 per person. We are taking a coach on a day trip to ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL (about 30 minutes from Calais) for their Ducasse (village fair) where you can see what our French neighbours get up to at the weekends. As well as a reception on arrival and lunch, there will be entertainment throughout the day. This will be a fun day out and better still we have set the cost at just £10 per person. So, if you are interested don’t delay and ring Carol on 07745 683 466 to secure your place. Please note you will need a valid passport to travel on this trip. In the last issue of Minster Matters we asked for local artists and crafters to participate in the Armbouts-Cappel Art Exhibition at the end of March and we have now received a good selection of items that have been taken to France, so sorry if you missed out on having your chance to exhibit internationally.

Thanet Over Fifties Forum: Residents flock to TOFFs Meeting on Living with Dementia Over 60 people turned up for last week’s meeting of the Thanet over Fifties Forum (TOFFs), held at the Trinity Resource Centre in Margate, to hear about the support available to those living with dementia and their loved ones in Thanet. Speakers for the day were Admiral Nurse Jade Garlick, a qualified mental health nurse for 12 years and Niall McLaughlin, a senior lecturer in mental health nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University. Ms Garlick spoke passionately about the work of Admiral Nurses, who are funded by the charity Dementia UK and she recommended the Dementia UK Helpline as a valuable resource and a caring ear for families. Telephone: 0800 888 6678 - Email: helpline@dementiauk.org. TOFFs coordinator Pauline Petitt said: “We were very pleased that so many people were able to attend this meeting and access information on a subject which affects so many individuals and families in Thanet. Feedback on the day from those present told us that the TOFFs meeting proved highly effective at demystifying the support available, both for people who have dementia and their families who care for them. The link between hearing loss and dementia, and what can be done to reduce this, was also very informative.” Many of the excellent dementia support organisations were present at the meeting. These included: ● EKIDS, East Kent Independent Dementia Support: www.ekids.org.uk ● Age UK Dementia “Drop in” the last Friday of every month. Tel: 01843 223 881 ● Memories, memory stimulation through activities, reminiscence and singing: 01843 220 925 ● Bright Shadow, fun fortnightly creative sessions: www.brtightshadow.org.uk ● Thanet Dementia Hub at Trinity: www.trinitymargate.co.uk/centre ● Thanet Community Support Partnership puts people in touch with the services they need via our simple and easy-to-use referrals service. Tel: 01843 609 337 For more information call Pauline Petitt at Kent Coast Volunteering, Thanet Over Fifties Forum, on 01843 609 337 or email pauline.petitt@kcv.org.uk. The next TOFFs meeting is on 13 March 2019 at 10.30am at St Peters Memorial Hall. Paul Gibbons of Kent Coast Volunteering will be talking on how volunteers can make a really big difference to communities, followed by Susan Elliot talking on the St Peter’s Village Tours, and the fantastic contribution made by volunteers.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? Unexpected, hungry visitors? Rock cakes! Easy to make, easy to eat, and they don’t have to look beautiful. They are also especially good for young children to make, as they are simple to put together, and a great introduction to cooking. I remember one of my sisters learning to cook, and there wasn’t a surface that didn’t have flour on it by the end of the afternoon… and that one’s now a trained cook. Orange and Stem Ginger Rock Cakes 8oz/225g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger (or more for a real kick!) 4oz/100g butter cut into small pieces 4oz/100g Demerara sugar zest of 1 orange 3oz/75g golden raisins/sultanas 3oz/chopped stem ginger 1 egg, beaten plus a little milk

Preheat oven to 200 deg C, and line one large or two small baking trays with non-stick baking parchment (or grease the trays). This will make about 12. Sieve the flour, spices and baking powder. Rub the butter into the flour until it looks like breadcrumbs (you could also do this in a mixer, pulsing at low speed). Stir in the sugar, orange zest and fruit. Pour in the beaten egg and mix it in gently (again, quick pulses). You will probably need to add about a dessertspoon of milk, or slightly more (especially if you use gluten-free flour). The mixture should be stiff and crumbly (the clue is in the name!). Drop the mix in tablespoon sized lumps onto a baking sheet – you can shape it with a fork, but it should look craggy and rough. Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack – when they are straight out of the oven, the cakes are quite soft and will spread a little, so use a fish slice to pick them or up or they will break. Minster Matters Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of February Meeting

There were only 6 Councillors present at the February meeting as three were unable to attend and we have 2 vacancies at the moment. However, the increase in the number of members of the public was welcome. PCSO Adrian Butterworth said that on the whole we had enjoyed a relatively quiet month from the policing perspective. There have been 33 calls to Minster including an attempted burglary at Minster Abbey where the suspect was disturbed and made off and damage to a motor vehicle. Other calls were of less serious nature. There were no County Councillors present at the meeting but District Cllrs. Crow-Brown and Pugh did attend. The former spoke of the Draft Housing Plan and is enquiring into the sale of two properties by Orbit Housing; the latter continues to address the issue of frequent power cuts and the impact of the new pylons on wild life. The Chairman again reminded everyone of the forthcoming elections. Existing councillors will need to decide if they are willing to stand again. Members of the public are asked to consider putting themselves forward for election as there are vacancies on the Parish Council. Further information will be in Minster Matters and available from the Parish Office. The Clerk reported that ‘Action with Communities in Rural Kent’ will be visiting Minster with their Coffee Caravan in the summer months; it will be in the New Inn car park one Tuesday morning a month providing coffee and cake. The aim is to tackle isolation and loneliness in vulnerable people. More information will be provided early in the summer. Councillors debated the suggestion that the Parish Council should rent the spare office in the library to provide more space for the Clerks and a working base for Minster Matters. It was agreed to delay this decision until we know the new rental charges, as KCC have yet to notify the details of the rent review. TDC have finally agreed to the asset transfer of the car parks and public toilets in Minster. The Chairman thanked Cllr. Crow-Brown for his considerable assistance in this matter. The properties will now be the responsibility of the Parish Council and will remain free of charge. Cllr. Quittenden updated the meeting on his recent attendance at the Thanet Assn. of Local Councils and at a meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner. It seems that Kent Police have had £100m cut from their budget since 2010 but they are now recruiting again; 200 extra officers are now operational and a further 170 are in training. He noted that many areas complained at the lack of a PCSO so we should consider ourselves fortunate to have our officer dedicated to the area. The Chairman reported on the plans to federate Minster and Monkton schools in April, 2019; after that date there will no longer be a Parish Councillor on the governing board. Cllr. Bailey spoke of a coach trip to France in June to celebrate the anniversary of the Twinning Assn., there are a few places available, and a quiz will be held at the RBL on 9th March. In the public question time parking issues were raised and it was agreed that efforts would be made to encourage parking enforcement officers to attend the village more often.

March 2019 THANET FESTIVAL CHOIR MENDELSSOHN ‘St Paul’ 7pm. Saturday 30th March: Holy Trinity Church Broadstairs Thanet Festival Choir is delighted to present Saint Paul, the first of Mendelssohn’s oratorios, written when the composer was in his twenty-sixth year. The subject offered tremendous dramatic possibilities to the young composer, who rose to the challenge magnificently. Mendelssohn held the choral masterpieces of Handel, Bach and Haydn in high regard, and Saint Paul is modelled on similar lines, with an integrated scheme of recitatives, arias and thrilling choruses telling the story of the Apostle. The text is based largely on The Acts of the Apostles, and there are three principal themes – the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, the conversion of Saint Paul, and the apostle’s subsequent career. During Mendelssohn’s lifetime, Saint Paul was a popular and frequently performed work, but it is now infrequently performed in its entirety. Indeed, as far as we know it has not previously been performed in the Isle of Thanet. This is a great pity as Saint Paul is a compelling piece, full of musical invention and innovation. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear it! The Soloists are Helen Bailey (Mezzo-Soprano), Mark Dobell (Tenor) and William Gaunt (Bass), with Alicia Hunt (Contralto). The Choir will be accompanied by the Thanet Festival Orchestra and the performance will, as usual, be conducted by Clifford Lister. Advance tickets for this concert are now on sale, £13 for adults (£15 at the door) and £2 for children. Available from Choir members, from the Ticket Secretary telephone 01304 620560, or online below. There is an administration fee of £1 per booking for online purchases, to cover PayPal and postage costs. All seating is unreserved.
