MINSTER SHOW - UPDATE Elsewhere in this issue you will find an article on changes we’ve made to the Show, this year, most of which revolve around what is happening in the marquee, competition wise. We’ve also looked at the possibility of withdrawing the mile race as it isn’t receiving the support it deserves.. So, if you’d like to see this remain as part of the Show then please bring your running shoes with you and enter on the day, we know there are a lot of social runners in the village who could make this a better event and keep it alive for future generations. Furthermore we also need more entries in the ‘Fancy Dress’ sections of the Parade. You will see from the schedule when it becomes available in NORTHROP SERVICES May that we had no entries in either the adult or the child sections last KITCHEN & BATHROOM FITTING year. Tiling, Plastering We’ve also dropped the decorated bike and pram sections as these & General Maintenance haven’t really been supported for a number of years. HOME DECORATING All aspects of the Show rely on participation by villagers to make it a Interior & Exterior success, so if you want to see the Show continue then we need your Local, Reliable & Experienced support, whether that be by entering the Parade, running the mile, or taking part in any of the competitive sections in the marquee. Contact Paul or Tracy Look out for the schedule which will be available from 4th/5th May in 01843 823 646 many local businesses still at the very reasonable price of just 50p. You will need a copy, to see what we have changed, deleted or added and also Flowers by Vanessa for your marquee competitions entry forms. Bouquets, Baskets,Table decorations,

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP NEW INITIATIVE FOR MINSTER SURGERY In conjunction with Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Groups, we are working to improve “Foot Care” for those patients with diabetes. As a result, we will be holding health information sessions at the surgery for those patients considered to be at high risk of such problems. Further information will be available shortly. 10th ANNUAL SPRING FAYRE Our Spring Fayre will take place on Saturday 11 May at Old Schools, Church Street as usual, and of course, as always - Free Entry! Tables remain at £8 for small and £12 for large and are selling fast, so please book early to avoid disappointment. We will be launching our raffle in April with many excellent prizes so please check our noticeboard for more information. DONATIONS We would like to thank the family and friends of the late Mr. Thomas Goldie (Hunter) for their kind and generous donations to the surgery in his memory. Thank you also to Mr. & Mrs. Pepperell for their kind donation whilst at the surgery recently. MISSED APPOINTMENTS - THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Despite a slight increase in the nurse’s figures, they remain encouraging. 28 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 49 did not attend their nurse’s appointment, but that’s still 77 wasted appointments and time costing the NHS over £12,000. So please remember - Don’t need it? Cancel it! By phone, text or online.

April 2019

A Day in The Life of a Police Community Support Officer For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting me yet let me start by introducing myself, my name is Adrian Butterworth and I am the PCSO for Minster village. My career prior to joining Kent Police was made up of 10 years in the Royal Artillery which I joined straight from school and 15 years as a service engineer for a well-known local amusement manufacturer with a couple of small jobs in between. These jobs brought me up to May 2007 where I took the opportunity to join Kent Police as a Police Community Support Officer. I was initially responsible for Garlinge Ward in Margate and soon after also the Westbrook and Salmestone Wards. I remained with them for about 10 years before moving to Minster in October 2017. Well that’s enough about me let me tell you about what could and sometimes does happen in a typical day whilst I am on duty. I work a shift system that could mean I start at 08:00 till 18:00 or 13:00 till 23:00 which includes weekends. As you can imagine there are different scenarios that can play out during day/night and weekend shifts. My day starts when I arrive at Margate Police Station usually about half hour early to make sure I have all my equipment namely my radio, body worn video, and my stab vest. And to make sure I get a cup of tea to start the day off on a good note. Once in the office I switch on my radio which automatically books me on to the resource system and lets the control room know that from then I am available to be deployed if needed. I locate a computer terminal in the office that is free and log onto the system to check on any emails that have come in since my last tour of duty and try to respond to them as soon as possible. There are also other systems that I have to check including a briefing system that lets me know of any trending crimes or incidents. As well as any intelligence that has come in regarding locations of interest and wanted offenders along with information that may constitute officer safety issues that I need to be aware of. I then check the data base for missing persons to see if any are missing from my beat area or if they have any links to my beat area. There are other systems that need reviewing and updating with any actions that I need to take or have already taken. I then get around to checking our calls data base this lets me know of all calls that have been received from my area along with who attended it and how it was resolved. In some cases, it will be my responsibility to attend the call and update the system with my actions. There will also be jobs on the system that have been tasked for me to attend or my Sergeant will task me to attend incidents. When all this is done, I am then just about ready to leave the station and make my way to Minster.

Minster Matters

5

I don on all my equipment and walk to Margate train station and catch the train to Minster. Once I exit the station at Minster, make my way either to the Recreation Ground to collect my Police pushbike or walk up to the Parish Council Office to touch base with the Parish Clerk’s to find out if there have been any reports to them that require my attention. After this I am then primed with a list if people and places to visit to endeavour to resolve whatever issue has been reported. All the time I will have my radio and phone on should I be required to divert to any incidents that may occur whilst in the village. These calls can be either quick easily sorted issues to long protracted incidents that may require numerous follow up visits along with other agencies such as social services or housing officers. Whilst I am on my area, I have a habit of wearing my high visibility jacket this makes me stand out in a crowd and allows everyone to recognise me. I am always very approachable and will listen to anybody’s concerns or issues no matter how trivial it may seem to them. I will pop into as many shops as I can to say hello and ask if that everything is ok and if time allows grab another cup of tea. I have to manage my time in a way that I get my tasks done as well as finding time to speak to as many members of the community that I can. I will walk/cycle from the top of Tothill Street to the bottom of Marsh Farm Road conversing with just about anybody who is out and about. When you see me around feel free to say hello, I am always there to help and give advice on any topic. If I don’t know the answer to your issue, I am sure that there is someone I can contact who can help. When I get some free time, I try to attend meetings or groups that are running to offer reassurance and advice. I will pop along to the school at closing time and chat to parents and show a visible presence in the area. I am always on the lookout for suspicious activity and things that don’t look right to feed back in the form of an intelligence report for circulation to other officers and departments to be aware of and take action if required. Towards the end of my day I put my bike away and make my way back to Margate police station. Once there I am back on the computer to submit any reports of intelligence gathered and to update any other reports that I have attended. As you can see there is more to my day than just walking around. It is a job that I enjoy doing and find it both rewarding and demanding in equal quantities. I have been in this role for some years and still coming across new challenges and incidents that require a lot of research and leg work but it is always satisfying when you achieve a positive result. My job would not be as enjoyable without the support I get from my colleagues and most of all the community I serve. I hold a surgery in the local library on the first Thursday of every month which I attend unless I have operational commitments. I am present at all Parish Council meetings and if I am not able to attend, I will submit an update to be read at the meeting. I am proud to be your PCSO and hope to remain as such for as long as possible.

KEEPING YOU SAFE This month I will pass on some tips regarding Telephone Fraud. Fraudsters try to trick people out of their money by telephoning them pretending to be from a well-known company or service. They often seem very genuine and trustworthy. Before they contact you they already know your name, your date of birth, your address and a whole host of personal information they can reel off as a way to show their sincerity. They use well-rehearsed stories, designed to gain trust, for example pretending to be from a phone or computer service provider and claiming that there is a problem with your system that they need to fix. Just remember: Be aware. Always verify the legitimacy of a caller by contacting the company they are claiming to be from using the contact number published on utility bills or official correspondence Don’t be afraid to just hang up NEVER give personal information, such as your date of birth or bank details to anyone. This includes typing your PIN into the handset If you are asked to make payment over the phone for something always confirm the caller’s identity first NEVER allow an unexpected caller to talk you through processes on your computer, like downloading new software or accessing your online bank account. You should report the scam to Action Fraud - the national fraud reporting centre. They might get the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau to investigate the scam further. You'll usually get a police crime reference number. It’s easiest to report scams online - either: report it as a crime on Action Fraud’s website www.actionfraud.police.uk if you’ve lost money report it as a phishing attempt on Action Fraud’s website www.actionfraud.police.uk if someone tried to scam you It’s best to fill in the form on a computer, not a mobile or tablet. It takes about 20 minutes to fill in. You can also report the scam by phone. This year’s May Play Our novel thriller, The Final Twist, by Ken Whitmore and Alfred Bradley, is now in rehearsal, and going very well. This lively and light-hearted play is complex to perform which makes great demands on the actors but is also great fun. Set in the late nineties, The Final Twist is a classic thriller packed with intrigue, humour and an ingenious plot. Charlie Nicholson has writer’s block, and is being chased by an “enforcer” of the casino he owes a lot of money to. Merlin Foster, an acclaimed actor with many marriages behind him, has specific needs. He employs Charlie to write a script for him which must contain the perfect method and alibi for the murder of his wife, and to be theatrically convincing. Merlin’s young wife, Eden, is to remain in the dark so that he can surprise her with the play. Merlin’s extreme approach to rehearsal worries Charlie, but he has to remain silent. When is a play not a play? When is a doorbell not a doorbell? And is that really a head in the bag? All is finally revealed in the murderous and surprising tale for the mystery lover. The play has a succession of twists and turns right up to the final curtain. It will be staged from Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th May at 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall. You can leave requests for advance bookings on the box office number which is 07501 894 381, and advance bookings are going well. www.minsterplayhouse.co.uk

Bagged!

Local charity’s bid to tackle older people’s loneliness sees Bags given Life in fun auction DOZENS braved the wintery weather to turn out for the first ever Give A Bag Some Life auction, which took place at the Comfort Inn Hotel last Friday evening. The event, organised by Kent Coast Volunteering (KCV), was no ordinary charity auction. On offer was a huge and colourful array of canvas bags, beautifully decorated by members of KCV’s “Thanet Good Neighbours Service” – a volunteer-led befriending service, which prevents the feelings of loneliness experienced by so many of Thanet’s older residents, by visiting individuals in their own homes, helping with shopping, decluttering, and dog-walking, or simply sitting down for cup of tea and a chat. Service Coordinator Rebecca Bullivant said: “We are really delighted at how much pleasure people have got from the project. “When we started handing out blank canvas bags to our members to decorate, we thought it would be a fun way of enabling them to express their creative sides. We had no idea the project would become so popular. Over the months, people of all ages and abilities got creative on

Ms Smith said: “When I heard about Give A Bag Some Life, I fell in love with it and jumped at the chance of getting involved. “It’s possible that one day, we may all need something like the Good Neighbours Service to support us in our times of difficulty, and this project is a wonderful thing.” Jackie Collins, one of the service’s volunteers, went beyond the call of duty by designing not one, but eleven bags, all of which contributed to the exceptional quality of the 70-odd bags involved. Ms Collins said: “I took part in decorating the bags because, as a volunteer with the Good Neighbours Service, I can see how important the service is. People are living longer, and I feel our befriending service allows people to keep their dignity, but we are there if anything starts to go wrong or they don’t seem to be coping.” As well as raising much-needed funds, organisers hope the initiative will also encourage new volunteers to get involved.

Good-natured bidding wars broke out throughout the evening, with two bags eventually being sold for £50 each - thanks to the expert performance of Ramsgate Town Promoter Rebekah Smith, who was the auctioneer.

Good Neighbours Service Volunteer, Jackie Collins, who herself designed 11 bags

April 2019 “Give A Bag Some Life helped bring our members together in a really fun way. It made everyone feel good and fostered a sense of community spirit”, said Ms Bullivant. “We are always looking for people who are interested in giving a small amount of time towards being a ‘good neighbour’ to some of Thanet’s most isolated older residents, and we hope this project acts as an incentive to join us”. Stunning designs: “Seascape” attracted much interest, drummed

The team at Kent Coast Volunteering has not ruled out a sequel: “The project has been such a hit that we will definitely be looking at keeping Give A Bag Some Life going for as long as it is successful”. MINSTER SHOW

SHOW TENT ENTRIES There have been many changes this year to the various classes listed in the schedule. The main changes however are that we have dropped some classes in the Parade, plus both the Garden and Wine sections have now gone, however to compensate, we’ve added some new classes across other sections. The vegetable section has undergone some dramatic changes with much less emphasis on formality and more on the fun side of growing; eg heaviest onion , biggest marrow etc etc. In an effort to try to encourage more entries we are also offering a £100 prize which will be allocated on the draw of a ticket. To acquire a ticket(s) you just need to enter a qualifying class in the show tent, the more classes you enter the more tickets you’ll be given and therefore the more chances you’ll have of winning. The youngsters too haven’t been forgotten, although we have dropped ‘Grow for the Show’ we’ve added a new co-operative class for them to enter, whilst also changing some of the age ranges for their other classes. We are offering a £25 prize to the youngsters for an entry into any of these classes (does not included the Schedule colouring competition) so the more classes they enter the more tickets they’ll receive and the more chances they’ll have of winning. Remember also, that each child who enters something into a qualifying section is entitled to ‘Free’ entry to The Show in the afternoon. So keep a look out for the Schedule which will be available to purchase in local businesses from Saturday 4 May. We wish you all the best of luck and look forward to seeing both you and your entries at ‘The Show’ on Saturday 20 July.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? I know that you can buy hot cross buns from January, if not all year round. However, these are simply not the same! Real hot cross buns are very special. They don’t keep, but they don’t need to – in the unlikely event that you have any left over, they toast beautifully, or can be made into bread and butter pudding. I always make these for Good Friday, as I’m generally singing in a choir on that day and want to feed my fellow singers. So, for me, warm hot cross buns are linked with beautiful sacred music. The variation below includes chocolate, but it’s not traditional. Spiced Chocolate and Orange Hot Cross Buns 14oz/400g strong plain flour (bread flour) – plus extra for the crosses 1oz/25g cocoa powder 1 tsp mixed spice + 1 tsp salt 3oz/85g butter (they use unsalted) 2 x sachets dried yeast 4oz/100g caster sugar 1 beaten egg 6 floz/190ml milk 3oz/75g raisins 3oz/75g milk chocolate, chopped Grated zest and juice of 1 orange 3oz/75g cut mixed peel Crosses: 3oz/75g flour, 1tbsp oil, 5 tbsp cold water Glaze: orange juice (as above) 2oz/50g caster sugar Oven 190 deg C If the raisins and peel are a bit hard, bring to the boil 2oz sugar and 1/4 pint water, add the dried fruit and simmer for a few minutes, then leave it to steep while you get the next part of the ingredients together. Drain it before using. In a large mixing bowl, put 4oz (100g) of the flour, cocoa, mixed spice and walt. Add the butter and rub it in until it looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and yeast. Whisk together the egg and milk and pour it into the dried mixture. Mix it quickly with a spoon to incorporate it. This makes a very soft dough. Turn onto a floured worktop and knead it until smooth (10 minutes). Put back into the big bowl, cover with a cloth or greased cling film, and leave to rise until doubled in size – about 1 – 1 ½ hrs. At this point, you can put the dough into the fridge overnight, covered in cling film. When you take it out, knead it gently, then continue, allowing longer than 30 minutes until the rolls have warmed up and risen. After that, turn the dough out again, add the raisins, chocolate, zest and peel and knead it again (about 2-3 minutes minimum). Cut the dough into 12 pieces, and shape into rolls. Put them onto a floured baking sheet, cover with oiled clingfilm or a light cloth, then leave for another 30 minutes to prove. Score the tops of the buns with a serrated knife with a cross (I didn’t do this). Mix together the flour, oil and water to a paste and pipe the crosses over the score marks. Put the buns into the oven. In a small pan, mix the orange juice and sugar. Boil for 2 minutes. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until well risen and firm to the touch (watch that they don’t go over-brown – always hard to tell with chocolate). When you take them out, glaze the buns with the orange syrup mix. For best results, do this twice, then leave them to cool…. if you can resist them for that long. Their prices are very low and you get 10p off your next purchase when you buy your first Pom Pom. All the money that the group makes is sent to a charity called Cancer Research. There is another group that is raising money for Cancer Research, that group is called Loom Crew. That means that group sells Loom Band bracelets and all types of cool accessories. Pom Pom People sell Pom Poms all over Thanet to ensure that no one is left out on all the Pom Pom fun. Although you might think that Pom Poms are just furry balls on strings they are really not, these Pom Poms can be hung basically anywhere in your home. The large Pom Poms sell for 50p the medium for 30p and small for 10p and there is a bargain in place, all three Pom Poms for only 70p. Loom Crew are also going to be selling Pom Poms this means Pom Pom People are going to be selling Loom Bands too. By Maddy Punter Year 5

The ocean… Is a largely unexplored area of massive size. Unfortunately we can’t keep exploring if this… …keeps happening. The animals have no answer to the pollution so we should. Adults say clean up after yourself and so they and us should clean up the ocean and land. This is what the oceans animals should be doing… I want to ask all of you to look for the recyclable plastic objects like milk bottles that are no use if you don’t throw it in a BIN.

Loom Crew Back in 2018, 7 girls joined forces to create the almighty Loom Crew. Little did they know that one day their small group would turn into a school sensation. This is the story of how it all began and some information on what they are planning to do in the future.

This is the girls incredible story of how boxes of bands, have become helping hands. Thank you for reading this article Make sure you stick around for more on the amazing LOOM CREW By the fabulous Annabelle. B, Eshal. S, Ellie. R, Emily. H

It all started on what seemed to be an ordinary day at school. 3 of the girls were sitting eating lunch in the School Hall when the topic of charity work arose. We started thinking about how we could do our part to help others. We brain-stormed ideas and eventually landed on the idea to make loom creations. Our next step was to decide which charity to support and because many of us were dealing with losses because of cancer we decided to support CANCER RESEARCH. Now with everything in place the girls were finally able to start bringing their vision to life. One by one the bands were braided and the posters were designed. It was all going well until they started to struggle at finding ways to sell the bands and started to lose hope but luckily they did not give up because there was a sparkle of light on the horizon… THE CHRISTMAS FAIR!!!! What a good opportunity it was as they were able to go from £14 to a phenomenal £60 pounds in just a matter of hours. That means that our fund was now an incredible £74 and this was just the start, what could be out there waiting for them… We are hoping to sell our creations not only in school but in Minster’s local Post office. They are also planning on releasing new limited edition themed sets (necklace, choker, bracelets and rings) so make sure you stay tuned.

Stay Safe Online Staying safe online is one of the things you always need to know about. Videos Games Stuff like Fortnite and Call of Duty are for older children aged 18 for Fortnite and 12+ for Call of Duty. Children and adults must learn about the consequences that looking at stuff with lots of blood will mean that in real life when something really bad happens it’ll not look that bad to someone who been playing Fortnite/Call of Duty. Phones Phones are one of the things that people and children are always getting bullied about. Some children in my class (Copper class) have had phones since year 1!!! Websites Some websites are very easy to get on your nerves like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, FaceTime and Skype. Yes, when you write /post a picture on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, FaceTime or Skype the comments aren’t always nice.

Minster Matters Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of March Meeting

● The meeting began with a written report from Community Warden Aaron Kluibenschadl explaining how his role within the Community Safety Partnership has evolved to include work on behalf of Social Services, Trading Standards, community project work and emergency incident liaison. The Social Services aspect of his role includes assessing mental health issues, selfneglect referrals and safeguarding for vulnerable adults and children. This is in addition to his existing work within schools, neighbourhoods and general KCC matters. ● PCSO Adrian Butterworth reported that there had been 34 calls to Kent Police from the Minster area in the last month including a burglary at stables in Way Hill and theft from motor vehicles in Monkton Road when two suspects were arrested. There were also reports of off road bikes, fly tipping, parking problems and traffic chaos caused by road closures. ● County Councillor Emma Dawson updated the meeting on recent projects she had been involved in, including first aid and defibrillator training in junior schools. ● District Cllr. Crow-Brown had recently been at the TDC budget meeting and it seems that they must find a further £1.8m in savings in response to government cuts but will commit £3m to maintain TDC buildings and £2m to Parkway Station. ● District Cllr. Grove said that recent planning meetings had approved 900 houses at Haine Road (aka Westwood Village) and a seafront hotel in Margate. He is also arranging for the etching of identification details on newly purchased parish council equipment following the burglary and theft of tools stolen in the New Year. ● District Cllr. Pugh sent a written update stating that he welcomed the hotel plans for Margate

April 2019

but was disappointed in the West wood village development in respect of the lack of supporting infrastructure. ● Ashley Jackson, Housing Strategy Officer from the Housing Strategy and Projects Team addressed the meeting on a Community Led Housing project. Documents are available at the parish office and library. ● The Chairman reminded everyone of the forthcoming elections and encouraged residents to consider whether they may like to become parish councillors. Applications must be submitted by 3rd April. ● The Inspection of the Draft Local Plan will commence on 2nd April and continue through to the end of May; Minster Parish Council will be present at four of the hearings to represent the views of residents. ● Councillors agreed to support the request for yellow lines to restrict parking at the junction of Hill House Drive and Tothill Street. ● Councillors agreed to offer no objections to the application to build a Costa Coffee in Laundry Road, Minster subject to the provision of updated traffic information. ● Questions from members of the public included affordable housing at the new development in St, Nicholas and the purpose of the fenced off land next to the Co-op garage. ● The subject of PCSO’s being given the power to deal with parking offences was raised but this would need legislative changes; it was suggested that we should consult with other parishes and suggest an enforcement officer should be allocated by TDC to the villages. The Chairman agreed to pursue this suggestion. ● Everyone was reminded of the forthcoming Great British Spring Clean being coordinated by Katie Andrew in this area.
