HOLSTEIN USA REGIONAL REPS

Tracy Schaefer MHA Board President

It is hard to believe that this will be my last President’s Address, but the 2 years have flown by. I have been told that I always talk about the weather when I start these, so I will go against the grain in this last one.

We are in need of many volunteers to help us pull off a fantastic 2022 National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, June 27th - July 1st. The planning committee has working tirelessly to put together a wonderful convention full of great activities. New this year will be a first of it’s kind “Data and Innovations Summit” which will focus on the new technology that businesses are working on for the future. This new summit and an exciting agenda of activities for Holstein enthusiasts of all ages will provide a memorable convention experience. Whether you would like to volunteer or simply plan to participate, we look forward to seeing you all there. To wrap up my last address, I would like to thank the membership, and my fellow board members for the opportunity to serve this great organization as your President. I truly love the Minnesota Holstein Association and value all the great friendships and relationships I have because of this association and our love of the Holstein cow. Thank you all, Tracy Schaefer, MHA President

Shelby Swanson

uccess is not key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” - Herman Cain Have you ever caught yourself dreaming, or had a vision? My sisters and I did, and so began the start of our dairy herd. My name is Shelby Swanson. I am a fifthgeneration dairy farmer, and this is my dairy story. I am the 16 year old daughter of David and Kari Swanson, and I have two older sisters, Sierra and McKenzie. Our family lives in Hutchinson, Minnesota, where I am currently a sophomore in high school. My sisters and I own 30 Registered Holsteins under our prefix, ThreeSisters Dairy. Our cows are housed at my uncle Mike’s farm, KurthHaven Farms, which is the original family farm; the place I call “home.” I spent a lot of time in the barn as a kid, trying to learn as much as possible. Working on the farm has created incredible relationships with my sisters and family that mean the world to me. All together, we milk 90 Registered Holsteins in a tie-stall barn. My responsibilities include assisting with milking, calf care and delivery of newborns (even in the middle of the night), dehorning calves, and tending to show animals. My favorite job on the farm is working with the show animals. We have them on a special high protein diet and work hard to transform them into stylish and profitable animals. I have a passion for good, quality cows and a love for farming. I love exhibiting my animals at shows, and it is my goal to continue to develop exceptional cow families with elite type genetics. I love working on the farm and I know that it will bring me success. Success in Holstein Involvement Life has many different paths and roads to travel, and I am excited to do it alongside fellow dairy enthusiasts

just like me. I was young and shy at my first Minnesota Junior Holstein Association (MJHA) convention, but it was fun to hang out with other dairy kids. They were kids that understand what life is like on the farm and have the same interests as I do. I was glad I went, because Holstein activities have taken me to many places since then. Before I was able to compete at the National Convention, I was able to go with my sisters to Iowa, Illinois and New York. Although I knew we were already hooked on going to the National Convention, it encouraged me to participate in different competitions on the state level. I enjoy participating in jeopardy, speech, quiz bowl, workshops, and tours. I won my first trip to the National Convention held in Bellevue, Washington, with my speech, “Showcations”. We toured the Space Needle as part of the family night, went on farm tours, and met many new friends. The National Holstein Conventions have become our family’s summer vacations. We learn about how other farms are managed, we tour their facilities, experience their climate, and get new ideas. Time spent traveling, sightseeing, and making new friends with the same passion for the Registered Holstein cow is something I look forward to every year. The National Junior Holstein Association has provided me with memories I will never forget. Being involved at the state level has also been very rewarding, and many of my favorite memories have been made in the show ring. In 2020, the Minnesota State Show was in South Dakota due to the global pandemic. After being stuck in our homes for months, I looked at the upcoming show as a chance to find success. When the Minnesota Holstein Association announced that they were having a show, I started to work with my calf, Jump4Joy. Jump, as I call her, was the first heifer that I bred and

owned on my own, not in partnership with my sisters. Due to the short time between the announcement and show day, we had a lot of work to do in only three weeks. Every day for those three weeks, Jump and I walked down our quarter-mile long driveway, she got rinsed, and we practiced showmanship. I spent more time with her that summer than I did with any of my friends. Fast forward to show day, and I was nervous, but Jump and I were ready! She placed seventh in a strong Winter Calf class, and then came time for showmanship. By this time Jump and I were like professional dance partners. We never missed a beat, and paraded the ring together, step by step. The judge pointed to me to head into first, and quickly followed with two other very strong showmen. I never gave up until I walked out of the ring, because I knew the top was going to be a hard spot to hold. Once the judge had congratulated me, I walked out of the show arena and was met by my family and friends. I was so happy that I achieved my goal of winning showmanship at the Minnesota State Holstein Show. This is the first of many dreams I want to accomplish, and the first step to finding success. My involvement in the Holstein Association isn’t just about trips or being in the show ring. It has taught me how to grow as an individual, and about leadership, responsibility, and working with others. I hope to become a part of the Junior Holstein board at the state and maybe even national levels. Other Dairy Activities The Minnesota 4-H program also provides me with many great opportunities. I have served as a part of my local 4-H officer team for five years. The positions I have held are historian, reporter, secretary, vice president, and I am excited to be the president this upcoming year. I am also involved in the county ambassador program, livestock committee, and 4-H Federation, where I am currently the public relations officer. The chance to mentor our younger members has been very rewarding. Like Junior Holstein, 4-H has also given me the opportunity to further my knowledge and leadership skills. I have been a member of the dairy judging team for seven years, where I learned how to place cows from top to bottom. Dairy judging has helped me tremendously in my ability to make a decision and justify that decision, as well as with public speaking. I have also been on the dairy quiz bowl team for seven years, and enjoy knowledge courses, and learning more about cows at every practice. FFA is another activity that I love. I have been a member of the Hutchinson FFA chapter for two years. Within the chapter, I am on the parliamentary procedure team, dairy judging team, and help on various committees to serve our community. In addition, I received my

Greenhand Degree this past year. All these activities allow me to be an advocate for the dairy industry, but one of the best ways I have found is through our county dairy princess program. I became involved in this program not only to make connections in the dairy community, but to make connections with the general public as well. These opportunities have allowed me to find my voice and be an ambassador for the hardworking dairy farmers of McLeod County. I love to share not only my dairy story, but the story of other dedicated dairy farmers, and raise awareness of the quality, delicious, and nutritious dairy products that we produce. Career Goals and Future Plans “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” - Eleanor Roosevelt My future career lies within the dairy industry, because it is a community that I could simply never leave. Through the rest of my time in high school, I will continue to stay active in Holstein events. My time will be majorly spent in the barn, working with my show animals, and working towards more successes in the show ring, dairy judging, and every aspect of my life. I then plan to go to a four-year university to continue my education and find out where my place will be within the dairy industry. I wouldn’t trade the hours spent with my show animals, the miles spent driving to conventions and cow shows, or the time spent farming with my family for anything in the world. My passion, my drive, and my successes are all owed to the Registered Holstein cow. MHA wishes the best of luck to both Shelby and Tyler as they submit their applications for national Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) consideration. Be sure to keep an eye out for feature stories about our two outstanding Minnesota Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) applicants in the June issue of the Minnesota Holstein News!

MINNESOTA YOUNG DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR MEMBER

M

Tyler Ratka

y name is Tyler Ratka and I am 16 years old. I live outside of Cold Spring, Minnesota, on a thirty-acre hobby farm where we own and lease show heifers. My story is quite different than others, as I did not grow up on a dairy farm. I grew up in town and leased cattle from a farm located 45 minutes away. My parents both grew up on dairy farms and my mom showed cattle growing up. Because of my mom’s experience and my dad’s job as a veterinarian, we were able to find a farm with kids aging out of showing and looking for someone to show their cattle. I started by showing cattle at the open show at our county fair and then began showing in 4-H as I got older. As I continued to get more involved, I started showing at the District 8 Show, Central Minnesota Dairy Days, State Fair, State Holstein Show, State Brown Swiss Show, and World Dairy Expo. I have always leased cattle from the same farm; JerLindy Farms. Until moving outside of town in 2016, the animals were housed on their farm. This meant we had to go out to the farm whenever we worked with them. Through the years of helping on the farm, I have done many tasks. Most often, I help with milking cows and feeding calves. I also help bed pens, move heifers, and help with routine maintenance. Occasionally, I also help trim

8

MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS MARCH 2022

hooves, help with classifying, assist with field work, and help cover the silage pile. I often help on the farm in return for leasing cattle. I also work on my neighbor’s farm where he crop farms and raises replacement heifers for two dairy farms. On the crop side, I run equipment, preform maintenance, and many other odd jobs. On the heifer side, I mix feed, haul manure, help vaccinate, help move heifers, help with herd checks, and assist with many more daily chores. Helping and working on both these farms has made me more interested in raising cattle, and taught me how to care for them. A Start in the Showring My showing career started when I was five years old. My first heifer’s name was Crimson. I was too young to be in 4-H, so the only show I showed her in was the Stearns County open class show. I still show in the open show and in the 4-H show at the county fair. In 2021, I won Grand Champion of the 4-H show with a cow I lease; Jer-Lindy Doorman Bismark. This was the first time I had won the show. In addition, I have won junior champion in the Holstein breed and Red and White. I have also done very well in showmanship through the years.

I then started to show in the district 8 Holstein show when it started to take place during the open class show. I have placed first in showmanship a few times, as well as second and third. In 2017, I was old enough to show at the State Fair 4-H Show. In my four years of showing at the state fair, I have made it to finals in showmanship twice and placed in the top twelve of roughly 100 kids. I have also made finals in interview all four years. In addition, I have placed in the dairy showcase which awards you money for your accomplishments in the dairy project. These earnings have helped fund the start of my herd. 2019 was the first year that I showed at the Minnesota State Holstein Show. In 2020, I won All-Minnesota Honorable Mention Fall Yearling with Sco-Lo Commander Remy at the Minnesota Holstein Junior Show. This year I was also able to show at World Dairy Expo in the showmanship contest. I enjoy showing at all different levels of shows and making connections with other showmen. The Junior Holstein Journey I am very active in the Junior Holstein Association. In 2017, I attended State Convention for the first time after an older friend encouraged my sister and I to come. I met lots of new people and placed third in dairy bowl, and I was hooked. In 2018, my sister and I recruited more friends to come with and our county 4-H dairy bowl team competed there. Our team placed first and I also placed first in jeopardy as well. Our team went on to compete at National Convention and I also competed in jeopardy. We had a lot of fun in Michigan and made lots of new memories. In 2019, I again competed in both dairy bowl and jeopardy at the state level and placed first in both. I went on to compete at nationals in jeopardy and placed in the top ten. While in Wisconsin, I went on farm tours and made memories with friends from Minnesota. In 2019, I also showed at the Minnesota State Show in Litchfield, Minnesota. While at the show, I also hung out with friends and helped in the food stand, which was a fundraiser for the junior association. In 2020, our state did not have a convention due to covid, but I again showed at the state show, which was in Brookings, South Dakota. I placed third in the fall yearling class in the junior show with Sco-Lo Commander Remy. I was also named the Dale Mackenthun Rising Star award. I enjoyed catching up with friends and helping with our junior association’s cheese raffle fundraiser. In 2021 our state hosted the competitions virtually without a convention due to covid. I again placed first in dairy bowl and jeopardy and our dairy bowl team went on to nationals. At nationals, our team was awarded the sportsmanship award. While at convention in

Pennsylvania, our team made lots of memories and met lots of new people. I again showed at state show in Worthington in 2021. I enjoyed being in the show ring and helping with the adult showmanship fundraiser and ag Olympics. I enjoy being a part of the Junior Holstein Association and look forward to continuing to attend national conventions. Future Plans In the future I plan to continue to get more involved in the Junior Holstein Association. I hope to continue to make connections with others and hope to one day show in a class at World Dairy Expo. After high school I plan to go to college, however, I have not decided where. I hope to study dairy production or ag sales and one day get a job within the dairy industry. I have not yet decided what job I want to pursue, but I hope to find a career where I can work with show cattle and the show world. I want to have some show cattle when I grow up, most likely on the side as a hobby along with a job that has flexible hours. MHA wishes the best of luck to both Tyler and Shelby as they submit their applications for national Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) consideration. Be sure to keep an eye out for feature stories about our two outstanding Minnesota Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) applicants in the June issue of the Minnesota Holstein News!

W

e are excited to welcome you to Hutchinson, Minnesota, on April 16 as we celebrate more than 70 years of Raylore Farm. Why a sale? The milking herd and heifers look great, we’ve got a team in place to manage the event as a family, and it’s time for the third generation of Holstein breeders to take the lead. We will continue to milk some cows “past their prime” and raise calves for the fourth generation to show. The Raylore Sale will feature 75 lots of show-age calves and yearlings, along with exciting young cows and proven transmitting dams. We’ve also connected with family and friends from across the U.S. to assemble an exceptional group of consignments. The classifier comes on Feb. 12, and we’ll be picturing the following week. Follow Raylore Farm on Facebook for sale updates and give us a call if you’d like to visit the farm - visitors welcome!

16-MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Summer 2021

2021 Illinois Holstein Association Awards ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN OF THE YEAR This year’s Illinois Holstein of the Year Contest didn’t include a nomination or voting process as has traditionally been done. Instead, the committee unanimously chose the winner as there was one clear stand-out – Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. A cow that Illinois breeders from across the state have enjoyed following and cheering on as she became an international superstar reaching exciting milestones. The ”apple” didn’t fall far from the tree as Shakira’s pedigree is stacked with show-winning cows on both the top and bottom side. John Erbsen invested in Miss Apple Snapple-Red-ET with friends, Francisco & Sofia Rodriquez of Colganados Genetics in 2013. They crossed the Redburst daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red with O’Kaliber – a KHW Elm-Park Acme son of European show cow Descrausaz Iron O’Kalibra. Shakira looked to be following in her mother’s footsteps when she calved in as a Junior 2-Year-Old. Her winning ways started at the 2017 Illinois Championship Show where she was named Intermediate Champion and continued to World Dairy Expo where she was 1st Junior 2-Year-Old in the International Junior Holstein Show, and then sold to Ferme Jacobs & Associates. Shakira claimed first place at the Royal Winter Fair as well that year and received All-Canadian and Reserve AllAmerican honors. In 2018, Shakira was named Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo. 2021 has been an incredible year for Shakira – first scoring EX-97, then claiming Grand Champion honors at the International Holstein Show and Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo. In fact, there were four generations of the family at World Dairy Expo – Snapple, Shakira, Erbacres Diamond Sparkle and Erbacres Hanans Symphony-ET (that sold in the World Classic Sale). Shakira’s winning ways continued a month later at the Canadian National Show where she was once again Grand Champion. In addition to her wins on both sides of the border, Shakira has had several top-selling daughters and has an Excalibur son 94HO19826 Jacobs Showtime*RC. Congratulations to Shakira and those involved with her!

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Dale Drendel has spent the better part of his life involved in the Registered Holstein business, through the local, state and national organizations. He has devoted the last two decades to serving the membership of these organizations while also engaging in meaningful conversations with consumers through several dairy promotion organizations. Dale’s dedication to the “greater good” set him apart and make him an outstanding recipient of this year’s Distinguished Service Award. Dale Drendel is a 5th generation dairy farmer and 40+ year member of the Illinois Holstein Association. He was instrumental in forming our State’s Junior Association and served as Junior President from 1971-1972. He was a finalist for the “Junior Boy” award from National Holstein and also received his State FFA Degree. He met his wife. Linda, during this time when he was Junior President and she was the Illinois Holstein Dutchess. They were married in 1974 and began dairying in northern Illinois, building a tremendous herd of Holsteins, garnering champion ribbons on a national level. They are recipients of both the Junior Breeder and Senior Breeder award from our Association – making Dale part of a small group of tremendous Registered Holstein breeders to receive all three awards from the Illinois Holstein Association. With years of service and dedication to organizations representing so many of us involved in Registered Holsteins, it comes as no surprise that this year’s Illinois Holstein Distinguished Service Award is presented to Dale Drendel of Hampshire. Congratulations Dale!

SENIOR BREEDER AWARD Passion, dedication, and a love of agriculture are the driving forces behind our 2021 Senior Breeder, John Erbsen. Upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison John took a job with Prairie State/Select Sires (now MidAmerica/Select Sires) as a dairy program specialist and continues in that position today. For 34 years, he has worked with dairy producers throughout Illinois and southwest Iowa, providing mating suggestions for their herd with the goal of producing profitable cows that work well in their operations and enhance their breeding programs. Many Select Sires daughter photos have been captured by John in the past 29 years as well through his Erbsen Photography business which specializes in livestock photography. In addition to his work with Select Sires, John is actively involved in his family’s farm, Erbacres Holsteins. Some influential animals John has been involved with include Erbacres Damion, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET and Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. Faith and family are John’s top priorities, but the Holstein cow and the people associated with her have always been very influential. Congratulations John on receiving the 2021 Illinois Senior Breeder Award!

JUNIOR BREEDER AWARD Breeding strong cow families has been a part of Sarah Butler’s family since the beginning. Starting off, her grandfather, Bob Butler pushed for greatness, not only within his own Bluff-Ridge herd, but for all of the herds within the Illinois Holstein Association. Her father, David Butler bred the first All-Americans and Produce of Dams on a national level for the family. Most Illinois Holstein breeders recognize Bluff-Ridge Broker Jay EX-95 3E and Bluff-Ridge Mark Bea-TW EX92 DOM that had great success in the show ring and turned into great brood cows with numerous offspring scoring Excellent. And now, Sarah continues the legacy with countless Premier Breeder and Exhibitor awards at both the Illinois State Fair and Illinois Championship Shows. As the legendary Bob Butler would say, “That purple banner is all you really need.” In keeping with the words and legacy of her grandfather, Sarah has put together some great purple banner show herds. In fact, this year Bluff-Ridge was the 2021 Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Illinois State Fair and the 2021 Premier Breeder at the Illinois Championship Show. Bluff-Ridge was also the Premier Breeder at the Illinois State Fair in 2019 and 2015. Also extended down through the family, Sarah is recognized for her strong work ethic and love of the Holstein breed. The care Sarah has taken is reflected in the quality and longevity of the herd and the show string. Congratulations Sarah on receiving the 2021 Illinois Junior Breeder Award! Read more details about our 2021 award recipients on the Illinois Holstein website at www.IllinoisHolsteins.com

2021 Wisconsin Outstanding Holstein Girl & Boy Features The Outstanding Holstein Boy and Girl awards are the highest honor that the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association can bestow on members. The winners of these awards are chosen based on their Distinguished Junior Member applications and an interview. Our 2021 recipients were recognized at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention at the end of December. Get to meet the winners, Hannah Hockerman and Brian “Mac” McCullough. Hannah Hockerman Being named the Outstanding Holstein Girl is an honor that I have dreamed of since my first junior convention. I have always looked up to those who have received this prestigious award in the past. Being able to receive the award would not have been possible without the help of my family encouraging me every step of the way. I am honored to be recognized as this year’s 2021 Outstanding Holstein girl. I live on my family dairy farm in central Wisconsin. We milk 700 cow with an additional 1,000 head of young stock divided over three different farms. Each farm houses a different age animal. I am very lucky to have an opportunity to work with and care for animals every day. I graduated from Westfield Area High School in 2020, where I was involved in several different clubs. I was a four year officer in my FFA Chapter, serving as President my senior year. I also had to opportunity to advocate for the dairy industry through forensics. I was an active member of our school’s forensics team during my junior and senior years of high school. Having been raised on a family farm, I have realized my passion of teaching agriculture. My ventures in the Wisconsin Holstein Association, local FFA chapter, and involvement in 4-H have helped develop that passion and put me on the path to becoming an agricultural teacher. I am currently a student athlete at Rock Valley College, a two-year technical school in Rockford, Illinois. I plan to graduate from Rock Valley in the spring with an Associates Degree in science and then transfer to a four-year school to finish my degree. I 38 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2022

love working in the dairy industry, doing daily promotional activities, and hands-on learning. I especially enjoy helping youth learn about where their food comes from. By combining all the things I enjoy doing, becoming an agriculture teacher seems like a good fit for me, as I can teach youth and advocate for the dairy industry every day. From 2020-2021 I served the Wisconsin Holstein Association as the Southwest District Junior Activities Committee representative. Having this experience as a Junior Activities Committee member has really shown me the passion of youth members in our state. It was a great experience and I cannot wait to implement these learning experiences into the Wisconsin Holstein Association as an adult member. I currently am an active member of the District 5 Junior Holsteins Breeders. This past year, I decided to take leadership and start a quiz bowl team for our group. My goal was for the younger members to have fun and experience the activities, friendships, and leadership opportunities that I experienced through the Wisconsin Holstein Association and District 5 group. My three Dairy Bowl teams had a blast at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Through District 5 Junior Holsteins, I have also had the opportunity to attend the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. I have received many accolades through the years including 12 and Under Recognition, Young Distinguished Junior Member awards, and Distinguished Junior Member awards. In 2018 I was selected to represent Wisconsin in Michigan at the National Holstein Convention as a National YDJM finalist. This year I am representing the state of Wisconsin as a National DJM representative. I would like to thank my family and friends as I would not have been able to accomplish many things without their guidance. Mom, thank you for teaching me everything I know about showing cattle. I am also very thankful for your guidance this past year with the start of coaching the District 5 quiz bowl teams. Dad, thank you for always encouraging me to try new things. From softball activities to running heard health, you have always believed in me. I am also very thankful for your patience over the years as you helped me take on responsibilities on the farm. To my family, I am very grateful for your support over the years. From athletics to dairy related activities, you have covered chores and home farm responsibilities to allow me to follow my dreams and for that I am very thankful. I want to encourage members of the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association to find something they enjoy and run

with it. The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association allows youth members to try new things and push their comfort zones. I was once in your shoes. With hard work and big dreams you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Brian “Mac” McCullough I’m Brian McCullough, but my friends in the dairy world know me as Mac. I live on Rock-N-HillII Registered Holsteins with my parents Chris and Kathie, and sister Rachel. Our farm consists of 170 acres where we milk about 50 head and raise another 15 dry cows and 60 youngstock. Needless to say, my parents truly laid the foundation for my entire Holstein career. I’ve watched my Dad develop his herd of Holsteins from a group of “stall fillers” to one of the finest homebred herds in the state. This wasn’t achieved over night, but through the careful analyzation of individuals to create the perfect mating. He’s bred over 100 Excellent cows, and our current BAA stands at 113.2, ranking us 23rd in the nation. My dad, sister and I work together and very carefully select sires for our herd. My dad taught me how to read a stud’s linear, what to look for in a pedigree, and how to improve the next generation by mating. My dad allows me to create my own matings on my personal cows, which I take a lot of pride in. I love mating cows, and my ultimate goal is to breed a special one that could be nominated, or better yet, named AllAmerican. Showing has always been a staple of my summer and fall months with the highlight being World Dairy Expo. My family and I frequently exhibit at the District 6 Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Show, and World Dairy Expo. Wisconsin Junior State Fair has been my favorite show growing up. State Fair allowed me to connect with other Junior Holstein members and showcase the skills that I’ve developed. The past few state fairs have allowed me to showcase my leadership skills, as younger county youth have turned to me when looking for advice on how to prepare their animals for the show. In 2017, Chad Ryan and Lynn Harbaugh were looking for someone to help their main fitter, Jason Danhof, at the Wisconsin Championship Show. My dad put in a recommendation for me, and I was hired. For those that may not know, Jason has a renowned reputation around the world

for his fitting abilities. Knowing that I would be working with one the best fitters ever, I spent the week asking question after question, and watching with amazement to his precision and expertise. I took that experience gained from that show and soaked it all in like a sponge. Later that year, Chad and Lynn once again hired me to help Jason at World Dairy Expo. There, we not only fitted the show strings of Bella-Ridge, Ryan-Vu, and notable tie-ins, we also managed the World Classic sale cattle. Since 2017, Chad and Lynn have trusted me to continue help fitting their animals at many major shows. I’ve fitted for many respected breeders around the state, but I undoubtedly consider the Bella-Ridge and RyanVu string to be my “show-home”. Aside from giving me the opportunity to clip, Chad and Lynn have taught me incredible elite heifer raising skills. They know what it takes to develop the quality individuals that I strive to work with. I’ve asked what they do to improve feet and legs, what show diets to feed, hair growing advice, and how to present an animal to its best ability in the showring. Chad and Lynn have always given me honest and helpful answers that I could apply to my own animals. I’ve learned that in order to have an elite show cow, it takes an elite genetic family. I’ve always wanted a special show cow, so in 2019 I jumped at the opportunity to buy into an elite maternal line. A flashy mid-March speckled Doorman spring yearling caught my eye at our local sale. With approval from my dad, I purchased Budjon-Vail Doorman Harvest-ET. She went on to be Nominated Junior All-American for me, gave me a heifer calf, and put on a super udder. She won her class at our competitive District 6 show as a Junior 2-year-old, scored VG-88, and garnered a lot of attention at the 2020 Wisconsin Championship Show. Her heifer calf is also a standout individual, placing third at the Wisconsin State Fair this past summer. This fall, Harvest calved in with yet another heifer calf, an Addison, and scored EX-92 at 3-6. I look forward to continuing to work with elite genetic pools like “Harv’s” and potentially investing again if the right individual comes along. My ultimate goal is to build, own, and manage an elite show heifer raising facility that allows me to develop my own show prospects, while also raising the top 10 percent heifers from the home farm. I believe the more one-on-one attention I can give heifers, the more likely they can reach their full potential. I’ve been taught by so many talented people, and I can’t wait to showcase all that I’ve learned by doing it entirely by myself. I am truly honored to be named this year’s Outstanding Holstein Boy. Thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout the years, this would not have been possible with your support and generosity in sharing your knowledge. MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2022 - 39

MAKE HIGH-RANKING HOLSTEIN BREED AVERAGE (BAA%) LISTS

Earlier this year, Holstein Association USA released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2021 classifications. A number of herds from Minnesota and South Dakota ranked in the list of Overall Top 200 BAA Herds for 2021. The top herd from Region 6 was Ryan Griffin of Minnesota. Griffin recorded a BAA of 113.6 with ten cows. Several herds from Minnesota and South Dakota made the top 200 list and respective lists for herd size. Minnesota Holstein Association would like to congratulate all of these herds for this achievement. To see the lists with all states included and a complete ranking by region, visit: https://www. holsteinusa.com/programs_services/baa_lists_2021. html. The Holstein Breed Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account the age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on your herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd.

BREEDERS SEMINARS RETURN

FEATURING GUEST SPEAKER STEVE MADDOX OF RIVERDALE, CALIFORNIA Steve Maddox of Riverdale, California, traveled to the Midwest to speak at six Breeders Seminars in Minnesota and South Dakota from February 1-4, 2022. Being born into a dairy family, Steve Maddox’s passion for dairying and the dairy industry started at a young age. Maddox met his wife, Brenda, in 1976 at the California State Fair while showing registered Holsteins. They have welcomed three children into their family: Melissa, Christina and Stephen, Jr. Maddox’s passion continued to intensify as he pursued leadership roles in the dairy industry and beyond. He has served his local co-op board, Holstein USA, DairyAmerica, Dairy Management Inc., the local soccer and baseball leagues, his county fair board and the school board, all the while managing 4,300 milking and dry Holsteins and 4,500 replacement heifers. Alongside the dairy, the family farm grows alfalfa, triticale, wine grapes, almonds, pistachios and olives – totaling 9,000 farmable acres. Maddox describes his farm as a large family partnership that includes his wife, Brenda, who does payroll; son, Stephen Maddox, Jr., who manages the farming operation; and daughter-in-law, Haley, who is in charge of marketing and promotions.

Maddox Dairy was an expansion from the original family farm started by his father, Doug, and named for his grandparents, Rufus and Ann. RuAnn Dairy is now managed by his brother, Pat, and his wife, Mary. The two brothers are partners in RuAnn Genetics, a resurrected elite Holstein genetics company that was originally started by Maddox’s father, Doug, who would travel to local dairymen & sell bull semen out of the back of his car. During the Breeders Seminars, Steve spoke about the history of Maddox and Ruann, their breeding philosophy, management styles and goals for their herds. Steve shared the story and rich history behind the Maddox family’s involvement in the dairy industry and how their farm and cow families have continually adapted and evolved over the years. Steve also highlighted the unique aspects and challenges that accompany farming in Califonia - including water, other crops and commodities, legislation and more. The Minnesota Holstein Association would like to thank Steve Maddox for taking the time to travel to Minnesota and speak to our membership. We sincerely appreciate his willingness to share his wealth of dairy industry experience and knowledge with our attendees. OBITUARY: MICHAEL “MIKE” SCHILLER Michael J. “Mike” Schiller, age 68 of St. Francis, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 19, 2021, in St. Francis, Minnesota. Michael John Schiller was born May 22, 1953, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Harlin and Rita (Harren) Schiller. He graduated in 1971 from Holdingford High School and on November 15, 1975, he married the love of his life, Karen M. Roering. They began their adventure in dairy farming on the 3rd generation Schiller home farm, eventually purchasing it in 1980. In May 1995 they expanded their farming operation by purchasing the Lange farm. They were blessed with four children and raised their family on the farm. Mike was a dairy enthusiast and discovered a passion for breeding good, registered Holsteins, purchasing his first registered animal in 1981. They took pride in developing the prefix Schillview Holsteins. While the research-intensive process can take years and generations to get right, they had an outstanding herd of 90 registered cows by the time they were inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition to breeding his own cows, Mike had an extensive breeding bull and cow merchandising program, selling embryos throughout the nation and the world. He also took pride in planting and harvesting high-quality forage. Youngest son Charlie became a partner in the dairy operation in 2014.

He was a member of county, state and national Holstein Associations, and served on the Associated Milk Producers Inc (AMPI) corporate board. He was a member of Holdingford Jaycees and Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Mike was a one-of-a-kind dairy producer, caring, honest, funny man who could always make you smile and fill the room with laughter. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Karen Schiller of St. Francis; children, Michelle “Shelly” (Dave) Albers of Dundas, Brian Schiller of Isanti, Dennis Schiller of St. Francis, and Charles “Charlie” Schiller of St. Francis; grandchildren, Molly, Isaac, and Macy Albers, Andrew and Emma Schiller, and Caitlin Jansen; mother, Rita Schiller of Albany; sister and brothers, Judy (Jim) Douvier of Avon, Roger (LaVerne) Schiller of Aitkin, Kenny (Shannon) Schiller of The Villages, Florida, and Steve (Patty) Schiller of St. Cloud.
