The Kandiyohi Club’s efforts paid off with a veryorganized and well-attended All-Breeds Convention in Willmar in early March. At “Prisms of Possibilities,” attendees enjoyed productive committee meetings, good fellowship, and saw very deserving winners recognized with various awards. Our association’s sale committee also put on a very successful online sale at the same time. Updates were also provided regarding planning for the upcoming National Holstein Convention this June.

OFFICERS & DIRECTORS

On the Cover : Greetings fellow members, I would like to begin my inaugural message with sharing just how humbling it is to serve as president of the Minnesota Holstein Association. This association has a rich history of contributions to the progress of the Holstein breed, through many outstanding registered Holstein breeders, cows, bulls and many members serving as leaders in a variety of capacities.

The juniors also had their convention in March and were happy to have excellent attendance as well, including many first-time attendees. Junior members participated in Dairy Jeopardy, Quiz Bowl, educational farm tours and lots of socializing.

Q: What do you believe are the biggest challenges facing the Holstein Association USA today, and how do you think they should be most effectively addressed?

Q: Describe your operation and which of the Association’s programs you are currently using:

A: The biggest challenges facing the Holstein Association USA and more importantly, its members, are providing economically beneficial services and genetic information to members while trying to remain profitable. International and commercial dairymen continue to buy and utilize registered genetics from US Holstein breeders through semen, embryos, and live animals. While non-members claim no value to HAUSA registration, the additional data points that can be officially collected and verified from their herd does directly impact availability and reliability of future genetics. Moreover, providing official data points from a greater population of cows allows HAUSA to make proactive decisions about genetics indices as opposed to reacting to market sales. Restructuring the Basic ID program would help find a balance between new herd education and HAUSA service revenue.

A: David and I are the 6th generation to own and operate Forest-Lawn Holsteins. Alongside my parents (Paul and Cindy Swenson) we milk 260 cows - 240 Holsteins, all of which are registered, and an additional few Registered Brown Swiss and Ayrshires. Since 2013, cows have been milked with Lely 4-A4 robots, averaging 2.7 milkings. We raise our own forage for the dairy - alfalfa (baleage) and corn sileage. We utilize Holstein COMPLETE including whole herd classification, EASY ID and ENLIGHT programs. Since joining the family operation, we have increasingly utilized genomics to help manage heifer replacements for both breeding and sale decisions. Through our future farm projects, our goal is to improve labor efficiency and cow comfort to improve overall profitability.

Ashley serves on the Holstein Association USA International Marketing committee and is Sponsorship Chair for the 2022 National Holstein Convention to be hosted in Sioux Falls, S.D. She is Minnesota Holstein Association Treasurer and Nicollet County Club President.

Ashley is a church choir member, wedding soloist, pianist, and snowmobiler. She and her husband, David Hanson, enjoy showing at state and national shows and reuniting with friends at World Dairy Expo.

Ashley is an adjunct professor for the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine advanced bovine reproduction course. She chairs the American Embryo Transfer Association Government Liaison Committee and serves on the International Embryo Technology Society Health and Safety Advisory Committee, Forms and Certificates Subcommittee. She is also a member of American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Associations.

Ashley Swenson, Nicollet, Minnesota, grew up on Forest Lawn Farm, where they milk 240 Registered Holsteins, with a rolling herd average of over 27,094 pounds of milk. Ashley is now the 6th generation to own and operate the farm. She earned Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Minnesota and purchased Midwest Embryo Transfer Service in 2016.

Q: How do you personally help increase the value of registered Holsteins?

A: As an embryo transfer veterinarian, I work with Registered Holstein breeders to expand the marketability of their genetics. Embryos we produce are sold domestically but also internationally. Through my work with the American Embryo Transfer Association, I work directly with USDA to open new markets and modify existing protocols to expand markets for U.S. Registered Holstein genetics. As a Registered Holstein breeder, I understand first-hand the importance of maintaining U.S. genetic export markets. If elected, I will bring to the board changes within the global market and will work to ensure HAUSA members have a voice in global policy. Lastly, the domestic and international marketability and profitability of Registered Holsteins has provided for our family for sixgenerations - I believe in ensuring the same opportunity remains available for future generations.

“There is enough information and data that should allow everyone to find a market, whether their goal is showing or genomics. I believe Holstein Association USA should maintain the reliability of our data and the integrity of the markets to support any path, whether that be genomics, type, production, etc.”

-Ashley Swenson Elections will be held June 30, 2022, at the 136th Annual Meeting of Holstein Association USA in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. 5

The Minnesota Holstein Association would like to announce our support of Ashley Swenson, candidate for Holstein USA At-Large Director.

Showing is where I have bloomed. It was the one thing I looked forward to when I got home from school. Not only did I get to do what I love to do, but I got to work with cows and heifers. Growing up with the responsibility of balancing school and cows helped me so much with time management. It has helped me figure out how to become a better team player and leader. During my final year in 4-H last year, I took every opportunity to show anyone who wanted to learn about showing cattle my tips and tricks that I learned or was taught when I was new at showing.

Career Journey Growing up, I wanted to go to school to become a vet for the farm. My plans changed, and in Spring 2021, I graduated from Ridgewater College with a degree in Dairy Management. As I have gone through school, I have had the unique experience of watching the farm grow larger. This past summer in 2021, we finished the remodel at our second site in Perham, Minnesota. With construction, we

6 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS JUNE 2022

Iwas born and raised on our family farm where we milk 3,000 cows on two different sites. We have Holsteins, Red and White Holsteins, and a handful of Jerseys. We run about 2,500 acres with alfalfa and corn. Our two parlors are double 24 parallel rapid exit. Most of our barns are tunnel ventilated and one that is cross-ventilated. When I was growing up, our herd was about 300 milking cows. I would help my mom feed the calves until we sent them to a calf raiser. However, I enjoyed helping our herdsman much more than feeding the calves. If he would let me, I would follow him all day long. If I saw the vet truck pull into the yard, I would quickly put on my boots to find out what was going on. I was about ten years old when my family started to get into showing. Through showing, I grew a stronger passion for the cows. My family become very involved in 4-H, FFA, and the National and State Holstein Associations. You would probably never guess that I was shy when I was little if you met me today. My parents will tell you that I would barely say a word whenever I was brought to a new place. I believe being involved in 4-H, FFA, and the Holstein Associations has brought me out of my shell.Ihave learned I have a strong passion for Holsteins over the years from working with all our show heifers. Every summer, I take care of the show heifers and get them ready for the shows. We have a stanchion barn with a great ventilation system to help the heifers stay cool for great hair growth and get used to what it is like at a show. I take care of the clipping, washing, walking, registration, and making sure everything we need is ready for the next show.

We also enjoy sharing our farm and animals by having school tours or hosting an open house after our expansion. This past summer, at our newly remodeled dairy, we hosted Breakfast on the Farm. Last year, we also were the showcase herd at the Minnesota State Fair.

When we were able to fill one barn up with cows in the fall of 2021, it allowed me to use my internships in the fall and spring along with my winter break up in Perham to be with the cows. Once I had graduated from college, I returned home on the Richmond farm site and began working in the barn with the herdsman. I help with the fresh cows and herd checks when they need an extra hand. I also work in the farm’s office helping with the day-to-day duties when I am not in the barn or working with the show heifers. My future plan is for my brothers and I to be partners in the family business. When

we had just moved into the second location, my dad get extremely ill and was in the hospital for a while. I was grateful I was just finishing up with midterms and had a month’s break from school. I took my last midterm before the fall internship and left immediately for the farm in Perham for a month. Dad did get better and eventually was able to come back up and help out. However, for about two and half weeks, I was managing the whole site. With construction and about 300 head, I had a lot on my plate for a 19-year-old. With help from the south farm herdsman, we took care of the cows with the breeding program and drying off cows. I was also in charge of the milkers. If someone did not show up or quit, I had to fill in for them. I also had to milk the hospital cows in their parlor every day twice a day. If the construction crew needed something, I was the person they called. When my brothers showed up for the last hay harvest, it helped knowing they could help with some of the projects on my plate.

Holstein Involvement and Activities

Over the years through my organization experience, working with my family, showing animals, working with the staff at the shows, and working with our employees, I have learned that teamwork is essential to a smoothrunning operation. My parents have often said, “Build a great team, and it is always fun to go to work.”

At the beginning of this year, I began helping with planning the 2022 National Junior Holstein Convention. I am the assistant co-chair. I was never on the Minnesota Junior Holstein Board, but I still help out a lot wherever help is needed throughout the year. My mom is the Junior Advisor for Minnesota, so I always lend a hand where help is needed. Whether it’s at a sale, a show, the breeders’ seminar, or the junior convention, I always enjoy helping out.

I have a true passion for the dairy industry, and I love to share my passion with other people. Talking to people not directly involved in dairy is fun. I enjoy sharing my dairy story and helping people understand where their food comes from, which is important to me. I also really enjoy mentoring other people that want to show their animals in a cattle show. There is a lot of reward in helping someone to achieve their goals with their animal because it is not always about winning.

Over the whole experience of managing the farm by myself for a while, I learned that even though I am a young female trying to run a farm, if you treat your employees with respect, they will have your back. Some good advice my dad left me with one day was, no matter how mad you are, you should never yell or raise your voice at your employees. I was very close one time, because someone forgot to move a gate and cows got piled up, but we all worked as a team to get through it. I learned so much about what it takes to do it all and gained a whole new level of respect for my parents and our employees who work with the cows every day. It does not matter if you are working in a construction zone or a fully functioning farm, it takes a great team to make it all go smooth.

Jasenko

MINNESOTA DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR MEMBER

There are many other tasks I am involved in on the farm. I assist the veterinarian with reproductive exams, including flush work, horn breeding cows, and sexing. I breed everything else on the farm and monitor heats, administer shots when needed, insert ear tags for identification, and register calves. One of my favorite things is when the milk tester comes once a month. I enjoy seeing progress on the cows and updating records with DHIA. Another way I like to see progress on my farm is by scoring some of our Clippingcows.cattle is one of my favorite things to do. I clip everything on the farm at least once, normally when heifers freshen. The most important time to clip in my opinion is when heifers freshen. It prevents pneumonia and keeps them clean in the barn. I also clip off the dry cows winter coats before they calve and keep our heifers heads, tails, and flanks clipped year-round.

Adiamond in the rough - the perfect phrase to describe my journey within the dairy community. It not only describes my personality but shows how my dairy projects have grown to the point they are at now. With support from my grandpa and other mentors, my road to success has been both fast and furious. On the Farm Growing up I didn’t have a choice but to fall in love with the Holstein cow. Throughout my life I have spent countless hours in the barn, and those hours in the barn turned into two decades of listening and learning from my grandpa, Tom, who had an eye for good cattle and enjoyed the bull-showing business. He traveled the nation, and filled me in on his stories of working with All-American cows and impactful herds. Time has gone by, and the farm has aged. From broken stalls to poor ventilation, I am working on improving our farm while amplifying our current heifer raising facilities. Currently, our cattle are housed in a 40-cow tie stall barn built over 100 years ago. We keep the cattle in the barn during the winter, and turn them onto pasture in the warm months. In the morning, I scrape the manure down behind all the cows and deeply bed them with chopped straw. Next, I feed the cows corn silage and add in their mineral and protein. After feeding, I prepare the milk house for milking with my grandpa. I then start filling the gutter with some water to help tone the barn cleaner and tidy up other parts of the barn. The show heifers are separated in a large pen in the shed, and I use the skidloader to feed them large bales of alfalfa-grass mix in their feeder. I also bed them and clean out the pen.

One of the early dairy events was the Gopher Dairy Camp through 4-H. This was where I blew up one of my first toplines. One counselor, Nate Donnay, saw potential in me. We were separated into groups of three to share a heifer for showmanship and group fitting. In my group, none of us had done a topline so I took the lead and gave it a try. It

8 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS JUNE 2022

My favorite part of showing is preparing my animals for the show ring. In the middle of the day at our farm, you would find me clipping cows and perfecting my skills for when I clip for others at shows. After clipping for a few smaller fairs or shows, I craved clipping even more, and competed in the fitting contest at the big stage – World Dairy Expo. I placed second in 2017 and fourth in 2019. After thinking 2020 was going to be my year, the contest was canceled along with the rest of World Dairy Expo. I kept getting more jobs and getting better for next time. In 2021, I fulfilled my goal of winning the Senior Division along with garnering Overall Fitter. It was an honor to have Jason Danhof, a well-known fitter, compliment me on my work. Fitting is also a consideration in showmanship. In showmanship, it is important to not only prepare your cattle for the ring, but also behave well in the ring. Every time I am walking a heifer, I treat it as showmanship because you never know who is watching. As a caretaker I feel that showmanship explains how well you took care of your cattle, and this is something I value.

Up until the time I was 9 years old, I showed in the Little Britches class at the Nicollet County Fair. That was the only dairy activity I did off the farm. In March of 2011, I attended my first Minnesota Junior Holstein All-Breeds Convention with our determined county group. Since that first convention, I have been involved in the dairy bowl contest and participated in other activities. One year, my team made it to the national contest and had the opportunity to go to Illinois. But Junior Convention isn’t all about the competition! I love to meet new people with the same interests as me, and convention is the best place for that. I have found it very beneficial for me to share laughs with my Holstein friends and other youth from around the state. It has also allowed me to network with dairy leaders that are role models for me. As I got older, I tried becoming more of a leader and role model towards the younger kids and I ran for the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association board a few times. After years of trying, I didn’t get enough votes to serve on the board, so I took this with a grain of salt and didn’t stop participating in activities put on by the Junior Holstein Association.

9JUNE 2022 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS actually ended up pretty nice, and that is where my love of clipping began.

The Show Ring Like most dairy youth, I love the show ring. Whether it’s the thrill of a blue ribbon, staying up all night to get a heifer filled or a cow bagged, spending hours helping out other kids with their dairy projects, or getting a nomination at the end of the year, I enjoy it all. My story didn’t begin in the show ring, but I have been blessed with some amazing opportunities. I have shown at the Minnesota State Show, the Nicollet County Fair, the Midwest Fall National, World Dairy Expo, and the Mid-East Fall National.

In the future, I would like to continue to breed and grow my own herd of Holsteins and Jerseys. I also would like to give back to younger youth just as those who have helped me become who I am today.

Junior Holstein Activities

In the end, I ultimately hope to become the fourth generation to operate Win-Top and help make our herd of Holsteins and Jerseys a household name.

I’ve also been asked to work for other farms at shows, but started as the night guy for Stadview and Sheeknoll. You can now find me clipping and fitting their animals. The biggest thrill that ignited a huge spark in me to keep working was in 2016 when I was the night guy, and I got a call that a cow in our 3-animal string was just named Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show. I was sleeping but I jumped up and was ready to celebrate. As a 15-year-old this was a highlight that I will always remember and can’t believe I could ever be part of.

I’m very focused on my lease program at the local level. Through the years, I’ve chosen to lease more of my animals and only show one per year at the county level. I want to give other kids the opportunity to be involved and have the same experiences I do. My leasee’s are involved in preparation at the farm and at the fair. Over the years, I have learned more at different levels to help improve their knowledge. I think this is unique for someone my age to say.

MHA extends their congratulations to both Ashley and Jasenko for exceptional youth involvement and submitting their applications for national Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) consideration. We wish the best of luck to Jasenko as he competes as a DJM finalist during the 2022 National Holstein Convention this summer!

The Future

Currently, I am a full-time fitter traveling around the United States clipping and fitting cattle. I plan on clipping for about five more years so I can save up the money to take over my family’s farm. A lot of people ask me about secondary education and when I really start to think about it, I think there are some great options for me. I want to be educated in many different aspects that will benefit me and my goals in the future. Some future educational experiences I want to partake in are auctioneering school, embryo transfer school, and hoof trimming school.

Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 22 of the 36 contests across the past 12 held at these 3 locations. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. In 2021, the University of Minnesota was 1st overall in both the Vernon County (Viroqua, WI) and the NAILE (Louisville, KY) collegiate contests. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. INTEGRATED APPROACH AN YOUR TURN

As a fifth-generation farmer and rancher and Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, I am honored to welcome you to South Dakota for the 2022 National Holstein Convention.

South Dakota is excited to host the Holstein Association’s National Convention and proud of the organization’s dedication to the development of the Holstein breed. This event is the perfect forum for leaders in our dairy community to come together, giving members, delegates, and directors the opportunity to discuss advances in technology and maximize efficiency and profitability.

In South Dakota, agriculture is our number one industry and dairy plays a major role in our success. Dairy farms continue to move their operations to our state because of our common-sense regulatory framework, and processors continue to choose South Dakota to invest in and expand their facilities. In the past 12 months alone, milk production has increased by a staggering 20% here. This growth is exciting for the entire industry.

At the 2022 convention, dairy industry leaders will highlight how the many innovations used on today’s dairy farms can maximize efficiency and profitability. I am continually impressed by the technological advances in the industry and the efforts of the Holstein Association.

Thank you to the sponsors for supporting the Holstein Association. This event is not possible without you. Thank you to our participants for attending the convention and your desire to learn and be active in the dairy industry. I’m grateful to the Holstein Association for choosing South Dakota and while you are here, I hope you have a chance to see our beautiful state. Have a great convention!

Welcome from the South Dakota Dept. of Ag!

While I’m proud of our state’s contributions to the dairy industry, it wouldn’t be possible without organizations such as the Holstein Association, the world’s largest dairy breed Association.

Sincerely, Secretary Hunter Roberts Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources

Friends,

Minnesota and South Dakota have hosted successful conventions in the past; Minnesota hosted in 1989 and 2010, while South Dakota hosted in 1991 and 2006. Now, with another group of incredibly dedicated convention volunteers, we look forward to hosting our Holstein friends once again for what promises to be an exceptional convention.

Welcome to South Dakota and the city of Sioux Falls for the 2022 National Holstein Convention, “Progress on the Plains!” The Minnesota Holstein Association, comprised of members from both Minnesota and South Dakota, are excited to show you what our area and membership have to offer.

I would like to acknowledge those allied businesses that have generously supported this convention. Their support has helped shape this event into an exciting, educational week. Their committment to our industry not only helps to make an event like this possible but is also key to making this area the fastest growing dairy region in the United States.

Welcome from the Minnesota Holstein Association!

At this year’s National Holstein Convention, we will not only conduct the business of Holstein Association USA, but we will also provide opportunities to see a variety of registered Holstein breeders and dairy operations on Host Day Tours, as well as take a look at what the future holds for the Holstein cow and dairy technology with the Data and Innovation Summit. In addition, junior competitions take place and top-notch cattle sell in the National Convention Sale on Thursday Weevening.aredairying and living in uncertain times with incredible upward price fluctuations for farm inputs and the wholesome products we produce. Depending upon where you call home, pressure from labor markets, regulatory infrastructure, weather and milk markets can make what we love to do a demanding vocation at times. Even so, I believe you will find a genuine sense of optimism within the Holstein breeders of Minnesota and South Dakota. Whether striving to improve the next generation of registered Holsteins, developing local markets for artisanal products, or employing technology to advance sustainability initiatives, you will find the members of our association at the forefront.

Dear fellow Holstein enthusiasts,

It is my expectation that your time at “Progress on the Plains” will present you with a chance to bring home some profitable new ideas, reacquaint with friends old and new, and provide a time of education and camaraderie that will be remembered fondly for years to come. Sincerely, Randy K. Gross Minnesota Holstein Association President

Embryo technology is utilized in their breeding program, where they focus on high genomic cow families. Cows are milked in a double 7 herringbone parlor with automatic identification and milk meters, and the dairy is a several-time recipient of the low SCC award from DFA.

Boadwine Farms

Davis Dairy Plant

The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Dairy Farm and Dairy Plant are primarily operated by SDSU undergraduate students in Dairy Production and Dairy Manufacturing/ Food Science. Research at the Dairy Farm focuses on dairy nutrition, genetics and sustainability; while the research at the Dairy Plant focuses on ingredient creation, ingredient utilization and microbial safety of dairy products. The SDSU Dairy Plant is state-inspected and produces ice cream and cheese for sale on campus and local retail locations. Fun fact - two students and a supervisor of the Dairy Plant invented cookies and cream ice cream in 1979!

Situated on a 55-acre site, 1,300 milking and dry cows call Ash Grove dairy home. Featuring a cross-ventilated free stall barn and double 20 GEA parlor, the main barn was built with opportunities for additions on the east and west sides. Calves are raised on site with Calf-Star auto feeders and go to a custom grower at 4 months of age, returning to the dairy at 6-7 months pregnant. The farm features automatic calf feeders, a methane digester, and members of the Dabble, Paradise, Sheen, Shot Mindy and many more cow families. Ash Grove Dairy is owned by Emerlan, LLC, which consists of Randy K. and Jennifer Gross, and Randy E. and Susan Gross, and Lansdowne, LLC, which is the Michael and Patricia Crinion family. While all the owners reside in South Dakota, the dairy is located just across the state line in Lake Benton, Minnesota.

Larry quietly established himself as an outstanding Holstein Breeder. As his two children were growing up in 4-H, Larry and Carolyn turned their acreage near Medford into a bit of a hobby dairy farm. The barn could hold up to 7 milk cows, which the family cared for daily. At one point, those cows included 2 Very Good 89 point 2 year olds. Eventually Larry would lease a 50 cow barn near Owatonna that would house his registered herd. The classification BAA for his herd was among the top 25 in the nation. From that small herd, Larry bred right at 100 cows that have scored Excellent. He’s bred and developed not one, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 cows that have scored Excellent at 94 points. For good measure, another 7 have scored EX-93 points and another 13 at EX-92. Among them have been All-Minnesota winners, Minnesota State Fair class winners and even a Reserve All-American. His awards and recognitions are too numerous to mention. They deservedly include service awards from the many groups and organizations he has so positively touched. Perhaps a couple that meant the most to Larry might include induction into the National Dairy Shrine Pioneer Award, Induction into the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame and the Gopher Dairy Club Golden Graduate Award.

Larry was married for 57 years to wife Carolyn. Daughter Tara lives in Washington and works in the travel industry and son Thane owns and operated a marina in Prior Lake. Larry enjoyed spoiling 7 grandchildren.

In

Few, if any, Minnesota Dairy Leaders have had as positive impact on the Holstein industry as Larry Tande.

Larry is one of the very few who have been voted by breeders to be the national judge for not one but three breeds in Madison – Milking Shorthorns and Brown Swiss and Holsteins (Junior Show). Along with this, he has judged dairy shows in more than a dozen foreign countries. His keen eye for the good ones and his uncanny ability to verbally defend his choices have made him a popular choice for facilitating dairy judging conferenced as well. He’s taught his skills at several regional, national and even international type conferences for all breeds of dairy cattle.

Larry served as the Minnesota State Fair Dairy Cattle Superintendent for several years. This show became the Midwest National Show for Holsteins. He lead those show the only way he knew – with precision management and extreme integrity – a reputation that brought record numbers of exhibitors from Minnesota and neighboring states.

Simply put – if you share Larry’s passion for quality dairy cattle, you have likely seen him judge -more than once. His skills in the center of the ring and on the mic are legendary. In Minnesota, Larry judged most county fairs and Dairy Days. He’s judged countless State Fairs. Few have ever judged on the colored shavings in Madison, Wisconsin.

252022 SOUVENIR BOOK NATIONAL HOLSTEIN CONVENTION

Larry passed away in May after a 15 year courageous battle with cancer.

In terms of leadership, Larry’s pedigree reads like a Whose Who in the dairy industry. His illustrious career as a dairy leader began in Minnesota when he was elected to the Minnesota Holstein Board of Directors. Quite a feat for an Extension person. His leadership skills were recognized and sought after, such that Minnesota Holstein breeders selected him to chair the National Holstein Convention Minnesota hosted back in 1989. Perhaps this was the pinnacle event that prepared Larry for a bid to be elected to the National Holstein Board of Directors. From there, Larry rose through the leadership ranks to serve a President of the National Holstein Association. It was Larry’s vision that created not only the presents judge’s certification process used at national dairy shows, but also the creation of the present Holstein true type model male and female.

Well the season has started with cropping, tractor pulling, barrel racing and showing cattle. It’s getting closer to wedding time in October for Brodie and Kayla. We have a good joke because who doesn’t need a laugh now days It is hard to find a joke today without a dirty word or two in it but here is one: Two tall trees, a birch and a beech are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, “Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?

Owned by: Tom & Florine Bunkelman Brooke, Brent and Brodie

The birch says he cannot tell but just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, “Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or son of a birch?”

HENDEL FARMS

Caledonia, Minnesota

Hendel Farms is a fourth generation dairy owned and operated by Karl, Matt & Pam and family. The brothers purchased the farm and first group of Holsteins in 1991 and upgraded the herd from the original 35 Brown Swiss cows to the current 400-cow milking herd composed of registered Holsteins and Brown Swiss. Our goal is to produce long-lasting, healthy, and efficient cattle with the assistance of the TPI and Net Merit formulas. We work to progress the genetics of our own herd and the breed as a whole through our embryo program. We strive to develop bulls that will sire daughters who compete well in the modern, large-scale commercial environment while maintaining good health, longevity, and functional type. We are surrounded by a great team of employees at our farm, including Josh Vatland, who has been an integral part of our genomic breeding program and is the owner of Vatland Holsteins. We enjoy hosting international guests at our farm and have developed an embryo export program through these established connections. We have worked with Japan and the E.U. for embryo exports and look forward to continuing this program along with our A.I. bull sales in the future. June will be a busy month for us with the National Holstein Convention happening this year. I want to congratulate all of our MN delegates and those representing us in contests or other areas. This will be a great opportunity for us all to be a part of. The 2022 MJHA All-Breeds Convention went off with a bang. It was held in Waite Park , Minnesota, with 116 juniors attending. Throughout the weekend, we did a lot of fun things including contests, farm tours (RedHead Creamery and Molitor’s Organic Dairy), banquet, dance, and our annual business meeting. We were excited to finally have an in-person convention and are looking forward to next year’s convention on March 17-19, 2023, in Rochester, Minnesota. This summer will sure be busy, but I hope to see you all at the events put on throughout the summer because these are some opportunities that you do not want to miss.

KURTHHAVEN FARMS

The MN Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (MNPDCA) announced the 2022 recipients of the MN PDCA Distinguished Breed Award. MHA members from Sunkist Acres and KurthHaven Farms were recipients.

SUNKIST ACRES

Currently, 90 Registered Holsteins are milked in a tiestall barn at KurthHaven. The rolling herd average is 26,550 pounds, with cows producing a herd average of 88 pounds per cow, per day. The herd average is 1,023 pounds of fat and 840 protein. At KurthHaven, cows are bred to be functional, put milk in the tank, and look good doing it. As a standard, the bulls used on KurthHaven cows are positive on milk and above 2.5 on type. All calves and heifers are raised on the farm, and steers are raised until three months of age and are then sold. They operate 1,000 acres of cropland that includes alfalfa, corn, soybeans and oats. Cows are fed a total mixed ration that includes hay and corn silage.

KurthHaven Farms is 100 percent family owned and operated by Michael and Kacie Kurth and their kids: Chandler and his wife, Rachel, Christian, and Brianna. The farm was founded in 1969 by Leroy and Sue Kurth, Michael’s parents, and they owned it until Michael and Kacie purchased the farm in 2016. Michael and Kacie run the day to day operations of the farm, and Leroy still helps out on the farm, feeding cows and conducting field work.

ANNUAL MEETING: PDCA AWARDS

15JUNE 2022 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS

“We are focused on making the type of show heifer that someone wants to come and pick out of our herd and make into a successful show project for them,” Nate said.

The Kurth’s can be found in the show ring at numerous shows across the state and country. The Kurths are especially proud of the progress they have made in the last few years, especially as they watch successful heifers turn into profitable, high scoring cows. They have also begun consigning heifers in sales and offering their genetics to other breeders. KurthHaven Farms has bred 31 excellent cows since 1999, when they first began classifying consistently.

With numerous show ring achievements under their belt, those who follow Minnesota Holstein breeders have become familiar with the Sunkist prefix and expect to see quality and eye-catching females in the show ring. However, some may not be familiar with the hardworking family and humble beginnings behind this prefix. Sunkist Acres is located just two miles outside of Glencoe, Minn. John and Connie Donnay took over the operation from John’s father in 1988. It is on this century farm that they raised five children: Alex, Nate, Mitchell, Ben, and Nicole.Today, the operation consists of 50 Registered Holsteins who are milked in a tie-stall barn. In addition, they farm 280 acres of corn and soybeans. Connie noted that having four boys over a span of seven years while also managing a dairy farm kept John and Connie extremely busy when the boys were young. However, now the Donnays are blessed with five children who have an interest in farming and pitch in to help. “I am lucky to have four boys interested in the farm,” John explained. “Fortunately two of the boys are more interested in the crop side of the farm and two of the boys are more interested in the cows.” Alex works full-time for Kubota and is married to Alyssa, and together they have two children - Thomas and Mackenzie. Mitch works full time for ADM Nutrition in Glencoe, and he and Alex remain involved with the crop side of the operation. Nate currently works on the dairy, and Ben, recently engaged to his fiance Blaize, have an interest in the cow side of the operation. Nicole also enjoys many aspects of the farm. The Donnays continue to set goals that will take them to the next level in the show ring. Nate and Ben have also both worked to promote Sunkist genetics through social media to reach a wider audience. The sires that they are currently using in the Sunkist breeding program include: Lambda, Sidekick, Chief, Tattoo, Doc, Dice-Red, Analyst-Red and Warrior.

OBITUARY: LARRY TANDE

Larry Tande, of rural Medford, always referred to life as a JOURNEY. Now at 83 years of age and 15 challenging years of multiple myeloma, his journey on earth has come to an end. Larry passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, at his home. Oh, what a journey Larry has traveled! Larry Anton Tande was born December 19, 1938, to Leslie and Gertrude (Hennis) Tande of rural Madelia, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Rosendale Lutheran Church, resulting in a strong Christian faith his entire life. His formal education began in country school, followed by Madelia High School where he was active in FFA. After graduating with honors in 1956, he continued his education at the U of M where he majored in Ag Education. After student teaching in Mountain Lake, he felt the classroom form of teaching was too confining and was not for him, and that Extension would be a better fit. He was hired by the U of M Extension Service in 1960 as Assistant Ag Agent working with the 4-H program in Steele County. This was a great fit for Larry as he had been an active 4-Her in Watonwan County, winning a trip to National 4-H Club Congress representing Minnesota as the 4-H Dairy Project winner and two years later to the National 4-H Dairy Conference. His final 4-H Dairy Show at the Minnesota State Fair, showing “Flash”, his purebred Holstein cow, resulted in a champion ribbon and silver coffee service.

A motion was made by Chris Schulze to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Trevor Ekkel. The meeting was adjourned at 9:11 AM.

18 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS JUNE 2022

Larry was a well-known and sought-after dairy cattle judge. He judged over 620 dairy cattle shows--most of the Minnesota county fairs, many district shows, many state fairs, 3 times at World Dairy Expo and several foreign dairy shows including Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Dominican Republic, Spain, Columbia and Ecuador as well as many US National shows. He was well known for his descriptive and easy to understand reasons and sharp eye. He taught several state, regional and national judging conferences for all breeds. He was known for his work, teaching and supporting kids from beginning 4-H members to college judging teams--helping them learn to evaluate and select good cattle. He loved working with the youth and was well respected. He always offered a kind and encouraging word of support. When asked during an interview if he ever received a negative remark about a placing, he replied, “Very few. I simply agree with them. They had the right to their opinion, but that day I was the judge and I got paid for mine.” Integrity and kindness were important to him. With his leadership skills appreciated by so many, he humbly accepted numerous awards: Steele County Livestock Hall of Fame; Minnesota Holstein Association President’s Award, Person of the Year Award, Longtime Meritorious Service Award; Minnesota PDCA Distinguished Breeder Award, Distinguished Service Award; Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame; U of M Gopher Dairy Club Distinguished Service Award, Golden Graduate Award: National Association of Ag Extension Agents Distinguished Service Award; National Pedigree Livestock Council Distinguished Service Award; Steele County ADA Livestock Achievement Award; and the National Dairy Shrine Pioneer Award. The list goes on--Larry has now begun a different journey, his Heavenly Journey. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of over 57 years, Carolyn. His children, Tara and Thane, will always have peace remembering his unconditional love and pride in them. His grandson, Dakin, and granddaughters, Tatum, Tana, Poppy, Dahvi, Sage, and Dassi will carry on the fun as they remember Grandpa’s yummy caramel rolls, abundant tomatoes from his garden, and the many corners of his farm to explore. Larry is also survived by his brothers Gerald (Arla) and Paul and brotherin-law Luther (Martha) Opjorden as well as by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of colleagues and friends around the world.Larry shared his final words to be shared with all----”I’ve had a good life. Don’t cry for me. I have been so blessed with my family and career. I couldn’t have asked for more!”

MHA would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all the family and friends who donated funds to MHA in memory of their beloved Minnesota Holstein enthusiasts who have recently passed. Your generosity and thoughtfulness has supported many Holstein scholarships and events!

The Steele County 4-H program flourished under his leadership with 1250+ members in 32 clubs. Larry also went on to earn his Master’s degree in Dairy Science and Horticulture at the U of M during this time. Larry left Steele County in 1973 and joined the State 4-H Staff as State 4-H Livestock Specialist. During this time ID’s were started as well as the rate of gain program for the meat animal projects and genetic awards for dairy. He also rewrote/updated all the 4-H livestock manuals/ bulletins. When Russ Gute, Steele County Ag Agent, retired, Larry was lured back to Steele County as Steele County Ag Agent and County Extension Director. This was followed by serving as Extension Regional Director supervising staff in South Central and Southeast Minnesota until his retirement after 42 years with the Minnesota Extension Service. At a Southeast District Extension Conference, Larry met Carolyn Opjorden, the Rice County Extension Home Agent. A few months later, Larry was strongly encouraged by a co-worker of his to invite Carolyn to attend a movie with him that was playing in Owatonna. He was sure she wouldn’t go, but finally called. She said, “Yes”, but it would have to be the second show because she had choir practice earlier. (The movie was “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.) As they say, “The rest is history”. Larry and Carolyn were married October 11, 1964, at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan, MN. They have been blessed with two children: Tara (Mountlake Terrace, WA) is a German Tour Guide and Emergency and Incident Coordinator for Rick Steves’ Europe and Thane (Prior Lake, MN) owns the Knotty Oar Marina in Prior Lake. Seven grandchildren are special blessings: Tatum, Tana, Dakin, Dahvi, and Dassi Tande and Poppy and Sage Swenson. Along with his career in Extension, Larry bred Registered Holsteins beginning with two that were 4-H projects for Tara and Thane. The herd continued to grow and under the Tande prefix, 98% of the herd was home bred. You could often see them in the ring at the Steele County Fair as well as at the Minnesota State Fair. He bred his cattle for production and type and his classification BAA for his herd was among the top 25 in the nation. The Progressive Breeders Registry Award was awarded several years. The highlight was seeing Tara’s Holstein heifer, “Ajax”, win Reserve Junior Champion at the 1980 World Dairy Expo. The herd was dispersed in 2013. Larry considered his membership in organizations to be leadership opportunities. He served on several committees at First English Lutheran Church including church council, President of church council, chair of a call committee, and member of the LEAD team. Of course, helping during the annual lefse making days at Christmas time was much fun! He served on the Minnesota Holstein Board of Directors, was President, and in 1989 was the chair of the National Holstein Convention held in Minnesota. In 2001 he was elected to the Holstein Association USA Board of Directors serving for 6 years, followed by 2 years as Vice-President and 2 years as President. During this time, he was involved in developing training conferences for those who wished to be judges of dairy cattle. This approved list is now used for shows at all levels. He also led the work for updating the illustrations of the true type Holstein cow and bull, setting the standards for Holstein type around the world. He was Open Class Dairy Superintendent of the Minnesota State Fair for several years. He had leadership roles in numerous other organizations including: Minnesota PDCA Board of Directors, Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association Board of Directors, National PDCA Board of Directors, World Dairy Expo Board of Directors, Holstein Foundation Board of Trustees, President of Minnesota Association of Extension Agents, to name a few.
