“ To educate students of knowledge, courage, personal integrity, and compassion.”

– Our Mission

HEAD OF SCHOOL & BOARD PRESIDENT MESSAGE Dear MMS Families and Friends,

CONTACT US MILWAUKEE MONTESSORI SCHOOL 345 N. 95th Street Milwaukee, WI 53226 Main Phone: 414-259-0370 Fax: 414-259-0427 Website: milwaukee-montessori.org mmsadmin@milwaukee-montessori.org ADMISSIONS 414-259-0370 x106 admissions@milwaukee-montessori.org DEVELOPMENT 414-259-0370 x142 aweiss@milwaukee-montessori.org 414-259-0370 x128 sziemke@milwaukee-montessori.org

Most schools dream of winning the National STEM Challenge in Game Design; MMS, on the other hand, has the extraordinary distinction of winning three times in the last five years! This year, TWO students won in separate categories out of a field of 3,000 entries. After having been alerted of the good news by the Challenge administrators, Mark German, President of E-Line Education, a founding sponsor of the National STEM Challenge wrote to us saying, “This is really exciting for us to have winners in two categories from the same school in the same competition cycle! And the fact that Milwaukee Montessori produced another STEM Challenge winner years ago speaks volumes for the quality of your technology program!” Kudos to Himani C. and Zoe P. for their award-winning games and a special thank you goes to Mr. Anastas, together with MMS UE and JH faculty, whose creative

thinking and hard work facilitates all of our students to think outside the box! This tremendous honor was the capstone of an important year for our school. In addition to our STEM achievements, we undertook our third Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS) accreditation cycle. During their intense visit, the team reviewed every process and practice in the school. They met students, parents, trustees, and teachers, and afterward wrote a comprehensive report approving our accreditation for another seven years. In fact, the report featured a list of glowing commendations that exceeded our expectations: “The ISACS Visiting Team commends Milwaukee Montessori for its positive school culture and rich learning environment that reflect the school’s mission. Milwaukee Montessori is a caring, warm, and encouraging community. All members of the

community show genuine enthusiasm and concern for students, instruction, and individual growth creating a positive and comfortable atmosphere and school culture. The faculty and staff are hardworking, passionate, respectful, kind, and articulate. They are true role models for the children.” On the heels of such a glowing reaccreditation process, we have much to be grateful for as we begin a new school year. Of special interest our new sport court will have officially opened by the time you receive this report. This project is consistent with our desire to balance the best of intellectual achievement with the best of physical and emotional development, so your students are well-rounded young people of knowledge, courage, personal integrity and compassion.

Our Board of Trustees works to ensure the future of our school and future generations of students. Serving in an oversight role, the Board has one employee – the Head of School. With a membership of parents and nonparents, our board members are vetted for skill sets that serve our general mission and strategic goals. Board members are asked to make a minimum donation of $2,500 to the MMS Fund. The Board meets bi-monthly, and trustees serve on the aforementioned committees for board evaluation and selection.

FISCAL YEAR 2016-2017 Due to our sound financial footing, the school has completed a renovation of the heating and air conditioning system, which now allows us to heat and cool throughout the year simultaneously. Also, two Lower Elementary classrooms have been fully renovated with new flooring, cabinets, and removal of the raised platforms to give students more useful space. Our technology program was advanced by the purchase of 20 new tablets for student use in Lower Elementary classrooms and 14 new tablets to replace faculty tablets that were nearing warranty expiration. New servers and firewall protection were also placed in service, as well as the research and implementation of a new student database which had become obsolete. Beyond infrastructure improvements, we also focused on professional development. Faculty pursued training in science, infant and toddler, curriculum, and adolescent studies. Our art teachers trained in the use of our new enamel kiln. Gifts to Green Initiatives purchased a recycling container system which we use daily to forward our efforts in recycling properly, as well as composting. Generous donations helped to provide $483,850 in need-based financial assistance to 22% of our students. Each one of these improvements are possible because of your significant donor support and Board of Trustee leadership. Thank you!
