“ To educate students of knowledge, courage, personal integrity, and compassion.”

– Milwaukee Montessori School Mission

HEAD OF SCHOOL & BOARD PRESIDENT MESSAGE

Dear MMS Families and Friends, It is our pleasure to report on the activities and financial results of Milwaukee Montessori School from our last fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2016.

CONTACT US MILWAUKEE MONTESSORI SCHOOL 345 N. 95th Street Milwaukee, WI 53226 Main Phone: 414-259-0370 Fax: 414-259-0427 Website: milwaukee-montessori.org mmsadmin@milwaukee-montessori.org ADMISSIONS 414-259-0370 x106 admissions@milwaukee-montessori.org DEVELOPMENT 414-259-0370 x142 amyers@milwaukee-montessori.org 414-259-0370 x128 sziemke@milwaukee-montessori.org

Last school year, our students experienced extraordinary success; they received more accolades and awards than can be mentioned in a brief letter. We highlight our young writers who won the Silver Medal in the Scholastic National Writing Competition, the Democracy Certificate of Merit from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and an additional twelve writing awards this school year. MMS students take pride in being among the most tech-literate. In our first foray into underwater robotics, students breezed through the regionals and then into the US Navy’s National and International

underwater robotics competition at the University of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. There, MMS students finished 39th in the world. This success speaks to the strength of the MMS mathematics and technology program where our students, who are well practiced in problem solving, creative design, and teamwork, held up beautifully under the scrutiny of 320,000 student onlookers. We are exceedingly grateful for the support of our parents, loyal alumni, faculty, and friends. In particular, we would like to thank Karen Van Ert, the chair of the seventh annual MMS Gala. She, and the members of the Gala Committee, provided us with invaluable guidance as we planned the event and collected items, ever mindful of the future needs of our students. As a result of their exceptional effort, the

event raised more than $70,000 for our students, including $32,550 toward tuition assistance. Lastly, we must acknowledge the outstanding work of the MMS Fund Committee, whose tireless work made our 20152016 fundraising results so strong. Your generosity makes MMS possible and we are exceptionally grateful for your support. We are truly proud of what our community has been able to accomplish and look forward to the continued progress we will make in the new academic year.

2015-2016 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Monica Van Aken, Ed.D. Head of School

Our Board of Trustees works to ensure the future of our school and future generations of students. Serving in an oversight role, the Board has one employee – the Head of School. With a membership of parents and nonparents, our board members are vetted for skill sets that serve our general mission and strategic goals. Board members are asked to make a minimum donation of $1,000 to the MMS Fund. The Board meets bi-monthly, and trustees serve on the aforementioned committees for board evaluation and selection.

FISCAL YEAR 2015-2016 The school produced a balanced budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Following the mandates of our overarching financial plan, the priorities for the 2015-2016 year were facility renovations and repairs, optimizing classroom configurations, strengthening our technology curriculum, and tuition assistance. To accomplish this, we renovated and restructured our Toddler Program to have three separate toddler rooms with smaller class sizes, each equipped with new furniture, cubbies, and large muscle toys. We also updated our wireless network to improve student connectivity and markedly expand our students’ digital learning opportunities. Finally, we gave $509,697 in need-based tuition assistance to 26% of our students. Along with infrastructure changes, many of our MMS faculty and staff members engaged in valuable professional development. Opportunities such as attending integrative technology conferences, methods of imparting mathematics seminars, toddler Montessori sessions, material making seminars, Orff music training, and historical writing colloquia each enable our faculty to make ever greater impacts to the student experience and learning outcomes. Ongoing professional development is a necessary investment that helps us attract and retain the best teachers in the area. None of these improvements would be possible without the remarkable support and leadership of the Board of Trustees and our generous donors. Thank you for your efforts to sustain Milwaukee Montessori School now and into the future.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION The MMS Parent Association comprises all parents and guardians of students enrolled at the school. Its goal is to build and strengthen the school community through educational, social, and fundraising projects. THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS! Milwaukee Montessori School would like to thank all of the volunteers who donate their time and energy to our school. Without your support and commitment, we would not be able to sustain the engaging and connected community that we have. The time you donate gives life to several PA events that give our families the opportunity to connect with people they may not otherwise meet. We sincerely value each and every volunteer at MMS and we look forward to the coming events of this school year!
