Leaders: Richard Lupoletti 324-1127 and Ken Kindler 563-4354 Wed 12/19 Seal Haul-Out Trail (3 miles) 10:00 am This popular hike takes us along an easy wooded trail to the shores of Block Island Sound, with a one mile detour to Money Pond. If conditions are right, we will find seals sunning themselves on the rocks near the shore. Dress warmly with proper footgear for weather conditions. Don’t forget binoculars. Meet at Camp Hero Rd in Montauk, a right turn off Rt 27 about 1 mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch. Leader: Eva Moore 238-5134 Wed 12/26 Oyster Pond (3 miles) 10:00 am Woods, fields, and great views along the way to Oyster Pond and back make for a jam-packed 3 miles of great (but not difficult) hiking. Meet at Third House in Theodore Roosevelt County Park east of downtown Montauk. Leader: Ed Porco 668-2093 Sat 12/29 Hither Hills Ramble (3-4miles) 10:00 am Say “Goodbye to ’07 and an early “Hello” to your ’08 resolution to get more exercise on this moderately paced hike over the rolling inclines of Hither Hills. The highlights are two spectacular water views, one of serene Fresh Pond (Montauk) and the bays from Waterfence. Meet at the Hither Hills Overlook in Montauk, about one mile east of Route 27and the Old Montauk Hwy split. Directions: When traveling north from Montauk Highway on Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Turnpike Narrow Lane is the second right. Follow Narrow Lane to Norris Lane which is the first right on Narrow. Dai Dayton 537-0660. Sat 12/1 Red Creek Ramble 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Meet at the parking lot of Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays. Moderate paced 4-5 mile hike with some hills; views of Penny Pond. Claude Debeaumon, 631-728-8667. Directions: Take Sunrise Highway to exit 65N (route 24) towards Riverhead. Travel north on C.R. 24 a couple hundred yards. You will see several signs before you bear right onto the turn lane for Old Riverhead Road West. There is not a Southampton Town Park sign here; the sign to look for is “Town of Southampton Jackson Ave. Offices,” and “Town Police.” Turn right onto Old Riverhead Road, pass the entrance to Southampton Town Police, and make the next left into the park. Sun 12/2 Barcelona Neck 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Meet at the Sag Harbor Golf Club parking lot on Barcelona Point Road, Sag Harbor. Moderate paced 4 mile hike. Magnificent woods and water views and perhaps an inspirational poem or two. Joe Lane, 631-725-3943. Directions: Take Montauk Highway east to Wainscott and make a left (north) onto Stephen Hands Path. Proceed for 1.3 miles to State Route 114, turn left and travel 2.8 miles north. A short distance past Swamp Road, two signs mark the entrance off of Route 114. One sign says “Sag Harbor Golf Course” the other sign indicates that you are entering the “Linda Gronland Memorial Nature Preserve at Barcelona Neck”. 0.8-miles after making the turn from Route 114 onto Barcelona Neck Road pass the golf course clubhouse and turn right into the parking lot. The clubhouse has rest-room facilities and there are refreshments sold here. Thurs 12/6 S.T.P.S. Monthly Membership Meeting. 7pm-9pm. Meet in the lower level conference room of Southampton Town Hall. All are welcome and encouraged to come. For more information call Glorian Berk, 631-283-2638. Directions: Turn RIGHT onto N SEA RD / CR-38. Continue to follow CR-38 for 0.8 miles. Turn LEFT onto Hampton Rd. travel 0.2 miles and you will see Southampton Town Hall on the right side of the road. End at 116 Hampton Rd. If you enter from the front you can take the down stairway to your left. Sat 12/8 Whiskey Hill Wandering. 10am-11:30am. Brisk 2 mile hike with ocean views and an enormous glacial erratic. Dai Dayton, 631-537-0660. Directions: Driving from Montauk Highway in Water Mill look for Scuttle Hole Road. There is a Hess Gas Station (with restroom facilities and a mini-mart) on the north side of Highway at the corner of Scuttle Hole Road and Montauk Highway. Turn left onto Scuttle Hole Road. Head north on Scuttle Hole Road for 2.5 miles, then turn left onto Lopers Path. Stay on Lopers Path for .5 mile, then turn right onto Mill Path and follow it to the cull de sac (.3 mile). Sat 12/8 Narrow Lane Clean Up. 8am-9am. Help clean up our adopted road. Meet at Narrow Lane and Norris Lane in Sagaponack. Bring gloves.
