Every year, several generous East Hampton residents open their houses to members and friends of the Historical Society for the annual tour. Six historically and architecturally significant homes will be showcased in this fall fundraiser. Typically, the houses are selected for their historic value as well as architectural details that are significant of the period when they were built. Tour participants receive a map of the locations with descriptions of each house for a self guided tour. After the tour, pictures and descriptions of the houses will be available in the Archive section of our website. See note below regarding access to the Archive section. Advance tickets available through the East Hampton Historical Society office, and on sale at Clinton Academy Museum on the day of the tour. The Research Center has over 10,000 archival materials and reference books on the history of Southampton. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. $4 adults, free for members and children 17 and under Sun 11/4 Countess de Salm's High Tea & Concert 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm Port of Missing Men. Admission is $250, call 283-2494 to receive an invitation. The "Port of Missing Men" is a North Sea mansion developed between 1926 and 1929 by Colonel Henry Huttleston Rogers, Jr. as a hunting lodge and getaway from his larger home on Gin Lane in Southampton. His father, H. H. Rogers Sr., also known as "Hell Hound Rogers," was the co-founder of Standard Oil along with J.D. Rockefeller. In his later years he became one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. In 1909 "The Colonel" inherited his father's fortune of stock in Standard Oil and served in WW I with distinction. The Countess von Salm-Hoogstraeten is the current owner of the property and the honorary chair of this benefit. Co-chairs for the event are Jean Mackenzie, Peter Hallock and Joanne Pateman. Grammy award-winning pianist Judy Carmichael will give a performance of jazz from the 1920s and 30s. Four Seasons Catering will provide a high tea of sweet and savory dishes. Champagne will enhance this late afternoon soiree along with a look at some of the rooms in the mansion, which are filled with priceless American and European antiques. Wed 11/14 The Art of Pie Baking Workshop 10:30 am - 1:00 pm $40 members, $45 non-members, space is limited, pay in advance, 283-2494. Kathleen King, master baker and owner of Tate’s Bake Shop will teach the techniques of pie baking.
