GROUP FOR THE EAST END 2442 Main Street, Bridgehampton 537-1400 x 15 Unless indicated, GEE’s explorations are free of charge. For information please contact Steve Biasetti at 631-537-1400 ext. 15 or sbiasetti@groupforthesouthfork.org Sat 9/15 Pound Traps – Ancient Fishing in Napeague Bay 10:30 am – 12:00 pm When the Shinnecock and Montaukett tribes fished the waters of the East End, much of their catch came from Pound Traps that corral rather than kill fish. European settlers mastered the technique still practiced today by a dwindling handful of long-time fishing families. Come walk the northern bluffs of Napeague Bay to learn how this ancient art uses local resources and a fish’s natural defenses to land fish with almost no bycatch. For reservations or more information, please contact Jeremy Samuelson at 631537-1400 (x12) or jsamuelson@groupforthesouthfork.org . Sat 9/15 International Coastal Cleanup Day 9:30 am Since 1986, the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society has coordinated New York's participation in the annual September International Coastal Cleanup. This year, Group for the East End is sponsoring two beaches for the cleanup: Mecox Beach and Sagg Main Beach. Please join us in the cleanup effort. For more information, please contact Jenn Hartnagel at 631-537-1400 (x21) or jhartnagel@groupforthesouthfork.org. Sun 9/23 Wildlife Migration Along the Barrier Island 10:30 am - 1 pm Join Steve Biasetti for a wildlife search along Dune Road west of the Shinnecock Inlet. The trip is timed to coincide with low tide, which should enhance our chances to see diverse shorebirds and wading birds. If winds are blowing from the northwest, migrating swallows, hawks, dragonflies, and butterflies will compete for our attention. Please bring binoculars. For reservations or more information, please contact Steve Biasetti at 631-537-1400 (x15) or sbiasetti@groupforthesouthfork.org . Wed 9/26 Sagaponack Full Moon Bike Ride 6:00 pm - 7 pm As the day ends, join Kate Schertel on a leisurely, 5-mile sunset bike ride through Sagaponack. The scenery will include many beautiful farm fields and the ride will culminate at Sagg Main Beach, where all are invited to relax under the light of the full moon. Please wear light colored/reflective clothing, and bring your own bike helmet and bottle of water. Sorry, bike rentals are not available. For reservations or more information, please contact Kate Schertel at 631-537-1400 (x13) or kschertel@groupforthesouthfork.org . Wed 9/26 The Actual Equinox: Moonrise & Sunset at Montauk 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm The cycles of the moon and stars are precise but our modern calendar comes with a margin of error. Learn why the equinox here is not the equinox everywhere as we watch the full moon rise over the ocean then turn to watch the sun setting on one of two days of the year with a perfectly balanced night and day. Bring binoculars, some blankets and a thermos of your favorite warm drink. For reservations or more information, please contact Jeremy Samuelson at 631-537-1400 (x12) or jsamuelson@groupforthesouthfork.org . BRIDGEHAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY 2368 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton 537-1088 Fri 9/28 – Sun 9/30 15th Bridgehampton Road Annual Rally Weekend The Rally: For over a decade now, the Bridgehampton Rally has grown increasingly competitive. Our rally is a time and distance event. The course uses public roads complete with local traffic. Timing on each leg of the course is done to the 10th of each second. And often a few 10ths will decide the winner of a timing leg! Entrants must be skilled in driving, map reading and timekeeping to compete. The full rally regulations can be viewed in the Rules and Regulations section of this site. Although initially only cars, which could have competed in the Bridgehampton road races, were eligible, this year the field will include sportscars made before 1231-1959. If you are interested in participating, please contact the historical society. Jim Shelly The Tour: We organized the Classic Car Tour after some Road Rally entrants repeatedly failed to complete the course. We realized that not everyone wanted to compete in the Road Rally, and that some classic car owners just wanted to take their cars out for the day and have a nice drive in the company of other like minded enthusiasts. If that describes you, welcome to the Tour! The Tour is open to any motor vehicle built before 12-31-1969. Even Motorcycles are welcome! In the past we have planned a different route and activities for our "tourists". This year again we are sending you on the same route as the rally entrants. And Why Not? We spend months finding little known roads, beautiful vistas, and interesting spots to send the rally to. We thought the tour should share the fruits of that effort. The tour will leave over the starting ramp immediately after the last road rally entrant departs. Tour cars can either drive as a group, or go it on your own. You'll follow the routebook through the first half of the rally until lunchtime, and enjoy lunch with all of the Rally and the Tour participants . After lunch, you may either follow more of the rally route, or return more directly to the Historical Society across Shelter Island. Either way you want to be in time for the Apres Rally Party and Awards Ceremony.
