Sat 8/25 The Booby Trap (or “Off Our Chests”) Musical Review. Suggested donation: $10 Custer Members; $13 Non-Members. 8:00 pm This is the first time in the history of medicine and theatre that a musical deals with the subject of bras as a significant cause of breast cancer, a medical finding brought to public attention in an NBC special, "Bras: The Bare Facts." This musical is based on the book, Get It Off: Understanding the Cause of Breast Pain, Cysts, and Cancer by medical anthropologists, Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, Directors of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease. In collaboration with award-winning composer, Leonard Lehrman (who'll be playing piano and singing along with cast members Helene Williams, Susan Blake, and Cary Bair), the authors created 17 songs that unabashedly deal with the interrelated social, environmental, and health issues. As reviewer Mark Greenfest (The New Music Connoisseur) described it: "A real pick-me-up. The libretto, although based on a very serious subject, makes its point with good humor, and the singers acted and sang with real flair." Following the performance will be a discussion on the environmental causes of breast cancer. Refreshments provided. Parental discretion is advised.
