Sun 10/11 Bay to Sound Trails: Big Clean-up #2 (Greenport) 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Hot on the heels of this summer’s hugely successful “Big Clean Up” hosted by our partners at North Fork Audubon Society (NFAS), Group for the East End and NFAS are back at it and need your help with “Big Clean Up # 2.” This time we are hoping to beat our record of 18 volunteers as we fill a 10-yard dumpster generously donated by our friends at Mattituck Sanitation. The Bay to Sounds Trails project will provide nature trails and bike paths linking Greenport's waterfront to the shore of Long Island Sound. So stop by for an hour or stay all day. We hope to make this a true community event with families, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Village and Town Board members, everyone. Please bring your own gloves. For more information and to let us know you are coming (so we can have enough bags, drinks, etc.), please contact Jeremy Samuelson at 631-765-6450 ext. 209 or jsamuelson@eastendenvironment.org. Wed 10/14 Cold-Stunned Sea Turtle Talk (Southold) 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Many times sea turtles don’t head south quite soon enough and can become “cold-stunned” (a condition similar to hypothermia), and can wash up on our shores. When discovered soon enough, these injured sea turtles can be nursed back to health by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. Join us along with a representative of the Riverhead Foundation and learn about the sea turtles in our local waters, and what to look for when walking our local beaches to help protect these unique animals. Reservations are required. For reservations or more information, please contact Jennifer Skilbred at 631-765-6450 ext. 212 or jskilbred@eastendenvironment.org. Wed 10/21 Beach Walk and Sea Turtle Search (Southold) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm Join us for a fall walk on a local Southold beach. We will bring bags, etc. for a cleanup, as well as search for any “cold-stunned” sea turtles that may have washed up on shore. Whether you attended the October 14th lecture or couldn’t make it and want to learn more about local sea turtles, this is a great exploration for you! For reservations or more information, please contact Jennifer Skilbred at 631-765-6450 ext. 212 or jskilbred@eastendenvironment.org. Thurs 10/29 Fifth Annual Quiz Night Fundraiser (Hampton Bays) 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Attention trivia enthusiasts! Join us for a fun night of quizzing topped off with CASH PRIZES. Teams will compete for a first place cash prize by answering quiz questions about the local environment and other interesting topics. We’ll also include a few games of BINGO between rounds! Get your friends together to share some laughs while raising money to protect and restore eastern Long Island’s environment. Team registration: $20 EARLY; $30 AT THE DOOR.
