During Winter

Our Centre

The Whitehouse is the nerve centre of our operations here at Newgale YMCA, serving as our office spaces, training room, welcome area for guests and includes one discreet twin bedroom located at the rear upstairs of the building. Upon arrival you may be greated by our resident pooch, Homer, who on the photo above may come across as strict and serious, but is actually an absolute softie. The training room can be equipped with seating for roughly 50 people, with plenty of white wall space should a projector be needed to liven up a presentation.

“I would like to thank all the staff who were both knowledgeable and attentive. A special thank you to John and Nicky who fed and looked after us beyond our expectations. - teacher from Milford Haven School

Hospitality

Through locally sourced foods and fulfilling any ethnic, religous or dietary needs, we hope to influence young people’s attitudes towards healthy eating, especially with its’ connection to the outdoors, as per our ethos. Our freshly cooked meals and seasonal spreads make the most of our county’s local produce and our home grown veg (a project called the Y Garden).

With meals being carefully prepared by our trained staff, they contain the necessary carbohydrates, sugars, salts, fats, oils and minerals need to maintain optimal bodily functions and provide energy for getting physical during activities.

Activities

All of the activities offered by Newgale YMCA OEC are delivered by highly qualified staff and regulated by the relevant authorities. Our activities take place within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which is unsurpassed in terms of it’s beauty, diversity of wildlife, Celtic history and geology. This alone gives a unique sense of place and provides an incredible backdrop for the activities and outdoor learning experiences we provide.

Coasteering Coasteering is the sport that put Pembrokeshire on the map. It brings together the best aspects of the local environment into one exciting activity. Coasteering is a combination of low level scrambles and high plunges. Accessed on many levels with breathtaking jumps into deep pools for adrenalin junkies and some smaller, intermediate jumps to build up to high level challenges.

Surfing

20

Expert surfing instructors are able to give quick skill progression and can skilfully get the most out of each budding surfer. Newgale beach is a Mecca for those surf addicts who come from far and wide to ride the waves in some fantastic and reliable conditions all year round.

Activities Mountain Biking We are situated on the Sustrans ‘Celtic Trail’ cycle route which winds its way through the picturesque landscape of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ideal for exploration by bicycle. The lanes are quiet and the traffic is light. We have a wide range and size of up to date mountain bikes. For those wanting a more challenging experience the nearby Preseli hills gives excellent cross country riding and we are also in striking distance of some of the best built trails in the country at Brechfa, Nant y Arian and Cwm Carn.

Canoeing/Kayaking Provides a wide range of water based experiences, from seeing the incredible rock formations, spot porpoise and sea birds, to seal pups and spectacular sunsets over Ramsay Island. Easy to manoeuvre, stable and comfortable Kayaks, which we use for taster sessions and short journeys along the coast. Open Canoes for the added challenge of working together in a craft whilst exploring wildlife on river journeys. Guided Sea Kayak journeys of a day or multi-day duration provide beach bivouacs and a truly adventurous feel.

21

Rock Climbing We are proud to offer this traditional sport that still commands a huge following with contemporary climbers and mountaineers enjoying celebrity status. The rock climbing in Pembrokeshire is regarded as some of the best in the UK. Complex geology of the area gives a broad range of challenges from the accessible crags of St Davids Head to the extreme routes on sea cliffs situated above a pounding sea. Sessions take place at exciting but user friendly venues of Wolf Rock and St Davids Head but more challenging venues can be used for smaller groups wanting to improve their skills and technical competences.

High Ropes & Climbing Wall

22

Alongside the menu of interpersonal challenges we have a High Challenge Course, deliberately designed to offer a spectrum of individual and team challenges that will provide a powerful and multi-faceted experience to all groups that use it. Team work, trust and achieving personal goals is at the core of this High Challenge experience. We use many elements to recognise the achievements individuals make on one of our programmes.

Activities Team Challenges We offer a vast range of team building and problem solving activities. Personal Development programmes will use the large open spaces of our grounds to either accelerate the ‘getting to know you’ process of a new group or to break the ice with an established group coming to Newgale to hone their skills or celebrate achievements. Whether you spend a morning climbing and abseiling from a tower or building a 10m high milk crate stack whilst standing on them, we can guarantee a powerful experience you will not forget!

Bushcraft The breath-taking surroundings of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is an ideal location for the Bushcraft Programme. Gaining a deeper understanding of, and respect for, a variety of natural environments, it’s rugged coastlines, copious woodlands and wealth of fauna and flora, provide a perfect resource to learn about surviving in the outdoors. It is also a course which will help participants develop their Team-Working, Communication, and Risk Management Skills, as well as building self reliance and confidence.

23

School Programmes

With the emphasis being on education through fun and adventurous experiences we are perfectly equipped to meet the needs of your students. We understand the needs of the curriculum both in Wales and across the UK and tailor our courses to help meet some of the specific requirements particular to key stages 2, 3 and 4.

24 34

“If you are looking for something a little different then we can tailor make a programme that meets your needs and covers the educational outcomes important to you.

School Programmes The process of developing new skills and achieving success is a fundamental principle in the delivery of powerful outdoor learning. We believe that the real consequences of learning and the exploration of different learning styles can give our course members a useful insight into how they learn and how to set goals. Used metaphorically this experience has direct relevance to the formal learning environment of school, college, university or work place.

25

Development Programmes Our range of Outdoor Programmes are perfectly designed for both school groups & youth groups (uniformed groups, NHS, youth clubs, young carers) with a particular emphasis on personal development. We specialise in delivering residential programmes which are ‘Outcome Led’ whilst still being fun and adventurous for all involved. Whether you want one of our pre-designed courses or have specific needs relevant to your group to fit into a wider programme of work, we have the experience and professionalism to make it happen.

John Muir Award

26

This week takes the young people on a journey of discovery looking at the environment around them and some of the ways they can be involved in caring for it. Whilst going out in the great outdoors they will learn about the sea shore and its many inhabitants along with the bird life and flora which is abundant here in the UK’s only Coastal National Park. Tying into the curriculum for Geography, Sciences, Physical Education and Personal Social Education, students will leave not just having had an amazing experience but also with an increased knowledge about the natural world plus the achievement of the John Muir Discovery Award.

High challenge, high adventure and lots of fun makes this a course to bring a smile to everyone’s face. We believe that having fun is the key to learning and by combining high quality outdoor experiences, together with professionally facilitated sessions; this course will meet many requirements of the Welsh or English National Curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 & 4. Some of the cross-curricular outcomes you could achieve include:

• Developing Thinking • Developing Communication • Health and Emotional Wellbeing

• Moral and Spiritual Development • Working with others • Improving own Learning

As well as these soft outcomes students will have the opportunity to gain their 1 star paddle sport award as well as Newgale’s own certificate of achievement on the final day.

Multi Activity Adventure

27

Outdoor Learning Cards As a training standard we utilise the Outdoor Education Advisor’s Panel’s (OEAP) Outdoor Learning Card resources. The emphasis being, to become a competent leader of outdoor activities within the workplace. This type of programme would enable Learning Support Assisstants (LSAs), Teachers, and Youth Leaders to lead or assist in outdoor activities. The Outdoor Learning Cards activities contribute directly to a wide range of educational and development aims for young people and cover four elements of Outdoor Learning that can be delivered on a school/ youth club site and surrounding environment:

Orienteering - developing good map reading skills

Team Building and Problem Solving - how to

28

challenge your young people Bouldering - Use of low level climbing walls Journeying - Local visits organised by young people

Whatever your situation, Duke of Edinburgh’s training, sports team captain, staff team supervisor or just about to start further education or employment, leadership is an essential quality. Our professionals will match the programme to the context of your group, looking at what makes a good leader, identifying what skills they already have relevant to leadership and finally learning something new to help them become even more confident and effective in the future.

Leadership Skills

29

Confidence Building

30

This course does what it says on the tin. Throughout the programme the group will look at the theory of comfort zones and personal challenge as well as support and encouragement from within a team. Each individual will be given the opportunity to achieve success and to recognise the skills they already have as well as learn new things. Every participant will leave the programme with a certificate to celebrate their many achievements and with a greater sense of self worth.

Action for Change

“This is not a course for the unprepared or unwilling, only the young people can make this programme a success.”

Development Programmes

This unique programme focuses on behavioural choices using the basis of ‘Reality Therapy’ and ‘Choice Theory’. This course is relevant to young people who want to make positive changes in their lives yet lack the confidence and the tools to make those changes happen. The course will begin by challenging existing behaviour and looking to the reasons behind it along with the consequences it brings. Young people will then work towards building a tool box for the future empowering themselves with different choices and the understanding that they are in control. Finally the course will end with an action planning session to be continued with the support of youth or social workers back in their home environment.

31

Development Programme

This flagship programme is an amalgamation of the Team Working Skills, Leadership and Confidence programmes. It pulls together some of the tools and techniques used by our staff to help build and instil the necessary skills and personal traits to thrive in the big world. The aim of this programme will be to inspire and develop the young person through outcome based learning.

32

Team Building Skills

Development Programmes

Learning to work as an effective team member can help you build your selfconfidence, develop your trust in others and enhance your communication skills. The central aim of this programme is to equip the participants with the skills and confidence necessary to be able to work effectively in any team setting. It will give participants the chance to explore and experiment with tools and techniques, through a variety of outdoor activities and under the guidance of experienced development tutors. In other words, this programme is not just about the theory of team working, but about building your understanding of how to be an effective team member through experiential learning.

This programme may be particularly useful for schools or youth groups looking to help young people adapt to changes in their lives, develop confidence and become a constructive team member, including NEETS or individuals being supported by a Youth Offending Team. This learning is useful in itself. However there will also be the opportunity for participants to gain accredited learning units through OCNs (Open College Networks) in:

• Preparing to Learn Outdoors (Entry level) NOCN Code: HB9E3CY001 • Working as a Team (Entry Level) NOCN Code: ADV771 • Teamwork (Level 1 NOCN Code: ABS066 • Teambuilding through Experiential Learning (Level 1) NOCN Code: AF51CY002

33

Bushcraft The Bushcraft Programme is an exciting way to gain a deeper understanding of, and respect for, a variety of natural environments. And where better to do this than in the breath-taking surroundings of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Its rugged coastlines, copious woodlands and wealth of fauna and flora provide a perfect location to learn about surviving in the outdoors. To really appreciate the beauty of the Pembrokeshire area you have to come and visit. This course includes sessions on navigation, Foraging, Camp craft cooking and River skills. It is a malleable course that can be tailored to individual groups and ages and their needs. However this Bushcraft course is not just about learning about the environment. It is also a course which will help participants develop their TeamWorking, Communication, and Risk Management Skills, as well as building self reliance and confidence. Therefore participants will gain skills that could be essential to reaching their full potential in all areas of their lives. There is also the opportunity for participants to have their learning experience turned into accredited learning, gaining a certificate in Woodland Survival Skills from OCN. The programme can take place intensively over the course of a week or spread over 6 weeks.

34

First Aid

British Canoe Union

Development Programmes

Everybody should learn first aid. However if you are involved in outdoor activities and sports this is a particularly essential course for you. In this course students will work towards a 16hr “Emergency” First Aid certificate. This award is certificated through Remote Emergency Care. The award supersedes the ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’ qualification and is recognised by all National Governing Bodies for outdoor sports and activities. The course will centre on scenario-based learning, including dealing with bone injuries, administering CPR, and coping with bleeding. If students do not meet the required hours of learning they may be eligible to receive the certificate in “Basic” first aid, ensuring all students on this course receive a recognised qualification - as well as vital skills that could help you save a life.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to explore the coastline or the river from a completely different angle? Learning how to Canoe and Kayak could be a way of opening up a whole new world for you – as well as helping you develop your skills and confidence in the water. The BCU Star Awards are nationally recognised canoe sport competency awards. The Introductory Awards show that the holder has the skills and knowledge to paddle safely in sheltered water environments (in both Canoe and Kayak). Gaining these Awards would be a personal achievement – but it could also be a step up to developing an exciting new career in the outdoor industry. BCU 1 and 2 Star Awards would give you a good grounding to attain the 3 Star Award, giving you personal competency required for entry on to the Coaching Scheme which would enable you to work as a Canoe and Kayak Instructor.

35

Health & Wellbeing Newgale YMCA OEC is in an excellent position to promote health and well-being through both the physical nature of its programmes and also the well documented mental and emotional benefits of being in the outdoors and participating in physical activity.

We believe that all young people need to have access to the natural environment, to have the opportunity and the tools to engage with it in a positive and sustainable way and that they need to be able to share these experiences with their peers, families and communities to promote healthier relationships as well as the more obvious individual benefits.

36

This programme allows the young people to understand what is on their door steps; whether it is in their gardens, hedge rows, sea or coastal path, these things are the platforms to gathering food and being active. By working with young people in this way we are able to address many issues such as self confidence, risk assessment, communication skills and team building. These skills all empower the young person to take control of their future and to influence the relationships they have with themselves and with others. If young people have the opportunity to develop a tool box of life skills through the process of adventurous activities then we can better their chances of becoming financially secure in the future, having motivation and skills to access and connect with places of inspiration and then pass these skills on to the next generation.

The following programme timetables have been created to give you an idea of the types of activities that will be carried out throughout the duration of each course, be it a 3 or 5 day course.

F.A.Q’s

What activities do you run? We offer Mountain Biking; Coasteering; Surfing; Kayaking; Canoeing; High Ropes Course, and Climbing Wall; Team Challenges; Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Bushcraft, Hiking and overnight Camping. How old must you be to take part? We generally accept children from 8 years old, however, we reserve the right to modify activities as our instructors see fit to comply with the age group and capabilities of the group. Can I book on the day? No, all courses must be booked in advance and as a group booking (4+ persons). Is it safe? Adventure activities carry an element of risk simply by the fact we are involved in the natural environment which is constantly changing. However, all our activities (on and off site) are taught and supervised by fully qualified instructors with proven experience and sound judgement and who have the ability to pitch the activity at a level that is suitable for the group. As we are licensed by the AALS, we are approved to deliver outdoor activities. Are the instructors qualified? All instructors are qualified with national governing body awards where appropriate. Where no governing body exists, staff are trained and assessed in house to stringent operating procedures. All staff will also hold first aid certificates and life saving qualifications where necessary.

44

How fit do I have to be to take part in activities? Providing you can climb up your stairs without breathlessness and with relative ease you will be fit enough take part in our activities. Before participating in activities, you will be required to complete our Medical Declaration. However, should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call us and discuss the matter in more detail.

What happens if there is bad weather? In most cases, the activity will be adapted in such a way that it will be safe to run, such as using a different, sheltered location or changing an activity that best suits the conditions.
