lectrifying, Fabulous, Fierce & Fun; all describe one of the most sought after celebrity barbers in the Southeast region. Brandi LaShay, owner of The Barber Doll House Grooming Studio, is a modern day “Wonder Woman” in an industry that’s ferociously competitive and dominated by men. Holding her own, over the last 17 years, Brandi’s love for the clippers began at the age of 14. Brandi says, "I would cut my high school sweethearts hair with some Andis Masters that I'd found in my mothers bathroom. I began cutting hair for the neighborhood and was charging five dollars a head. I'd save the money I was making to help with whatever the family needed at home." These efforts eventually led to the birth and creation of The Barber Doll House. Brandi LaShay’s Barber Doll House initially began as a professional mobile barber and consulting service that contracted out to many major television and film projects and musical concert events. Now located in Midtown Atlanta, this multifaceted business has developed into a full service grooming studio; complete with tattoo parlor, beautiful artwork and atmosphere and the luxury of being serviced from a beautiful and talented, all female staff. Brandi LaShay is now in great demand, with an exclusive clientele that requires her to travel across country; from California to Arizona, Texas, Florida, Washington, D.C. and New York and over time, her tenacity, determination and talent has garnered the attention of many notable figures, in the enter16 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - November 2014

When you want a quality running shoe... Nike. When you want a quality cut and you want to walk away feeling like your experience was everything and more... The Barber Doll House," said LaShay. For all aspiring female barbers, Brandi LaShay gives you her words of wisdom: "Master your craft. Remember, being a woman in this industry is only a handicap if you allow it to be. Educate yourself. Dandruff

and Your Diet By Tyler Kingston

S

uffers of dandruff have their own form of anxiety that non-sufferers may not identify with. Although the condition of dandruff is not lifethreatening, it is definitely a condition that degrades the lifestyle of dandruff sufferers. Therefore, those who have dandruff condition will pursue various remedies, including a variety of products available on the market today. However, many fail to realize that diet, like in may other physical ailments and conditions, can play a significant role in the condition and degree of dandruff. We shall look at natural treatments in the form of dietary factors to help reduce dandruff in this report. Statistics show that approximately 60 percent of U.S. citizens suffer from dandruff at some times in their lives. Dandruff is simply the flaking off of dead skin, but in the case of dandruff sufferer versus one with "normal" skin flaking, the dandruff sufferer sees a higher degree of skin flaking.

The human body's skin undergo a process where skin cells are gradually pushed outward from the epidermal layers up to the most external layer. When they reach this layer, they die and are flaked off. The life cycle of an average skin cell is about 28 days. For normal people without a noticeably dandruff problem, the whole cycle of skin cells being pushed out and flaking off is non noticeable. The difference with dandruff sufferers is that these people have an accelerated pace in the shredding of these skin cells. They produce much more skin cells, and these skin cells are produced and flaked off in as quick as two to seven days. These dead skin cells are flaked off as oily clumps, or flakes, hence the popular 20 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - November 2014

perception of dandruff flakes. In short, someone who has dandruff produces skin cells and slough them off at a more accelerated rate than someone who does not have dandruff. The dandruff condition can be of varying degrees. Unfortunately, there is no real cure for dandruff, but there are effective ways of controlling the dandruff condition. For the most part, dandruff does not require medical attention, unless it is at an extreme condition. Pretty much everything related to physical condition can be traced back to our diet to varying degrees. It is no difference with dandruff. Eating spicy food can cause an increase in bodily secretions. Spicy foods may irritate the body's metabolism and cause imbalances. The resulting imbalances may result in the increased bodily secretions, ultimately contributing to having dandruff.

Saturated fats as those found in red meat and trans-fatty acids like those found in margarine are known to encourage sebum production. Cutting down on these types of food may help reduce dandruff. It's no secret, just like your mother always encouraged you, that having a diet rich in vegetables and fruits is healthy for the body. These foods are rich in minerals and the B vitamins. It has been suggested that a lack of minerals and B vitamins may contribute to dandruff. Milk contains a lot of fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, K, D and E. These vitamins are important in helping keep your body in a healthy and balance state. A balanced body is healthy and conditions like dandruff are less likely to occur. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) has been thought recently by nutritionist as an ingredient in your diet that can help reduce dandruff. GLA is believed to play a role in maintaining the health

of your skin and hair. By increasing intake of GLA, it may be possible to alleviate dandruff. GLA is found is foods such as blackcurrant or evening primrose oil. It all boils down to "common sense." A good healthy, balanced diet contributes heavily to having a healthy and balanced body, which in turn, is less prone to having acne. For sure, other factors contribute to dandruff, but taking a look at your diet is a major first step to controlling your dandruff condition. The author enjoys writing on a wide spectrum of topics. Some of his recent writings focus on faux fur throws and faux shearling coat. Article Source: Dandruff and Your Diet

ack in our May 2014 Issue, we had the pleasure interviewing Robyn Reid, the Owner of Black Solutions, a hair and skin care company which creates highperforming products using new ingredients and innovative delivery systems not seen in the ethnic market, is the go to brand for barbers. We would like for you to meet two of Black Solutions Barbers, Calvin “Gee” Walker, and Kevin McIntyre Sr. Barbershop Owners, Educators, and Distributor of Black Solutions products.

h t i w e n O One-on-

By: Tina Richardson

Calvin “Gee” Walker Our readers would like to know how long have you been working for Black Solutions and what interested you in working for Black Solutions? I met black solutions at the Orlando Premiere Beauty Show in Florida in 2012.What interested me in Black Solutions: right away I saw the products they were selling and there were really creative and they were targeting Black Barbers. I started working with them immediately in the booth at that show. Can you tell our readers what you do as a Barber working for Black Solutions? I am a platform artist for trade shows, educator for seminars, distributor of the line, product developer for new products and believer for Black Solutions Products. What advice would you share with our male readers about how to prevent ingrown hair and what is the best product for African American men to use to prevent ingrown hair from reoccurring? I recommend Black Solutions Skin Smooth to prevent ingrown hair. If you use after shaving, a keratin protein attaches to the cut hairs leading point and softens the hair, so that once the hair grows and curls, it does not have the leading point to penetrate into the skin. If a person has the problem, it can be used twice per day for 7 days and it will get rid of the problem. You can then use an exfoliator to remove the dead skin. Where do you see yourself within in the company in the near future? Black Solutions has become an extension of my family. I see myself growing with the company for a long time. Black Solution a Black Family owned business that cares about the barber industry. They listen and are open to creating new and better products to give us what we need to enhance our barber game and make money while doing it. How can our readers connect with you on Social Media and do you have a professional website? Website: www.blacksolutions.com, Questions AskG@blacksolutions.com Instagram: black_solutions, Facebook: Germaine Walker 22 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - November 2014

Kevin McIntyre Sr. Can you tell our readers why you choose Barbering as a profession? I chose Barbering because it gave me an outlet for being creative and its symmetry. Tell us about some of your favorite hair care products from the Black Solutions hair care line that you like to use on your client’s hair? Some of my favorite hair care products from the Black Solutions hair care line are The Fade2Black & Brown spray. It gives clients the versatility and option of adding color without the commitment of a permanent color. In situations, where permanent color can’t be use because of allergies you can use the Fade2Black & Brown spray. You can have the same effect, which is less harsh to the skin. Another favorite hair care product I like to use from Black Solutions is The So Fresh So Clean Waterless Shampoo. It is a great product to use as a detergent to clean hair and soap before a service. What has your experience been like working as a Barber/Distributor for Black Solutions? It has been very enlightening, as well as exciting; it allows me to experience the best of both worlds. As a Barber, I learned what it takes to horn your craft to take it to the next level professionally. As well, as the responsibility of customers receiving their products in a timely and professional manner. Can you share a grooming tip with our readers on how to get the best shave? The best shave begins with the best products. Get to know your clients, what environment they work in. You cater your service around that. You have to be willing to go above and beyond. You can relieve a complete day of stress with a client with a good through shave. A good lather or gel, followed by a soothing hot towel, facial hand massager to relieve the stress and tension and finally a cooling after shave and remember to pull the skin tight while shaving, the tighter the pull, the cleaner the shave. How can our readers contact you via social media and do you have a website? I started like most gospel singers, ministering in the church. Myself and some other people who were working to minister through music started a Greater Anointing. We developed a small following and went on to do the McDonald's Gospel Fest--from there our small following grew and we started working with some secular artists and putting out albums and it kept rolling from there. What do you love about being able to minister through music? I love the way music is a medium that can reach everyone. You don't need to know all of the rhetoric of churches, or the bible to understand the messages from music. Its open and accessible. Tell our readers about your Greater Than album? Greater Than is a declaration of celebration of how great our God is. Through everything that is going on God will always be greater than. Our readers would like to know how did you become known as “The Stars Barber”? one who gave me the name “The Stars Barber” and the name stuck. We saw on your Instagram account and website you are a published Barber. What other publications have you been featured in? using social media. I started using Facebook to inbox celebrities and Q Parker from 112 responded to my message. Our male readers would like to ask you what is the best hair care product that you would recommend for them to use to enhance their wave pattern? The hair care product that I would recommend would be Sweet Jamila by Xotics. What advice would you give to up and coming new Barbers in the industry? First of all, don’t copy off other people and be yourself. Fall in love with your passion and be consistent with your work. Have you competed in hair shows before and have you won any Barber Battles? No, I haven’t done any Barber Battles, but I have worked in the Midwestern Expo in Columbus, Ohio in 2007 as a Platform Artist for American Crew. I also did the Bronner Brothers Hair Show before in 2010 and 2011 as a Platform Artist. Our readers would like to know some of the Celebrity clients you have cut hair for? I have cut hair for Actor and Comedian Brandon Jackson, Cam’ron, Khalil, Jazze

Pha, Q Parker from 112, Daron Jones from 112, DJ ASAP from BET 106 and Park, Brandon Rush who plays for the Golden State Warriors, Raymond Felton from the Dallas Mavericks, and most of the defensive players of the Dallas Cowboys.

We are talking about filming in Atlanta and Dallas in the springtime. The projection time is Summer 2015. The DVD will be available on my website and we are planning on going to hair shows to promote and market the DVD.

We see that you are planning on opening a chain or high end Barber Shops and currently have one located in Dallas, Texas. Where are you planning on opening your next Barber Lounge at and when? Our next Barber Lounge will probably be here in Dallas in the next two years and then we will branch out in Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angles.

Where do you see yourself in the future in the Barbering industry? I see myself coming into the shop like three days out of the week and more of a business owner role. Like more as a Vidal Sassoon/Paul Mitchell with a product line and into more of branding/marketing aspect of the industry. I also see myself take on more of an education role, platform work, and more onsite location work.

What type of charity work are you involved in as a Barber? I just did Haircuts 4 Dads for a foundation call “Where are you?” by LeTitia Calhoun Smith. I donated my time by cutting homeless men’s hair. You are currently in production of a DVD entitled, Barbering for Dummies: The Stars Barber presents Access Granted. When are you planning on releasing your DVD and how can our readers purchase your DVD?

HAMMER & NAILS, Los Angeles' First Exclusively Male Nail Salon, Opens Flagship Shop on Melrose Avenue Custom Designed MANicures Provided With Flat Screens, Sports, And Beverages Create Luxury Male Nail Shop

T

he Nail Shop for Guys announces the November 9 launch of their flagship location on the famous Melrose Avenue as the first male nail shop in Los Angeles. The opening of HAMMER & NAILS offers men an attractive alternative to visiting female-centric nail salons, which can often be awkward, embarrassing and uncomfortable. Custom-designed Hand and Foot Treatments are paired with personal flat-screen TVs and headphones, premium sports channels, and complimentary beverages to create the ultimate man cave experience. Decorated with oversized leather chairs, the front-end of a classic Chevy pickup truck and a leather punching bag and gloves from the 1940's, founder Michael Elliot has spared no cost to create a relaxing escape for men in Los Angeles. "When I first visited a traditional nail salon to treat my callused hands and feet, I felt completely like a fish out of water in a predominantly female environment," says Elliot. "I immediately saw a need for a nail shop that caters to businessmen, athletes, mechanics and men who take proper care of their appearance and hygiene. We've created a first-of-its-kind environment that is welcoming to all men by catering to their specific needs in a super-cool environment." HAMMER & NAILS will offer custom MANicures and pedicures, as well as their signature "Repair" MANicures and pedicures for those who need a little extra hygienic attention. These treatments include nail trimming and shaping, moisturizing, callus removal, paraffin treatment and massages all designed with a man's needs in mind. Prices range from $25 to a total package of salon treatments for$80. "Men have very different grooming needs than women and should be treated accordingly," says Elliot. "We decided to open our flagship store in Los Angeles, with all its diversity, culture, fashion and forward-thinkers. Our goal is to provide a HAMMER & NAILS experience to men across the nation in the near future." Accepting appointments and walk-ins, HAMMER & NAILS – The Nail Shop for Guys will officially launch on November 9 at 8257 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles 90046. 40 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - November 2014

About the Owner

Michael Elliot is the founder and owner of Hammer & Nails and President & CEO of Hammer & Nails Salons, Inc. Elliot has an eye for identifying untapped market niches and in 2013 he discovered that while there was a need for a business that provided hand and foot grooming exclusively to men, no such business existed. Elliot’s vast and successful entertainment career allowed him to see the shift in attitude regarding male hygiene and self-care, creating a long-term potential for a salon such as Hammer & Nails. Prior to launching Hammer & Nails, Elliot worked in the movie business. He is one of the most accomplished African-American screenwriters in Hollywood, having written films that have generated over $115 million in box office revenue and having won the 2011 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture. Elliot’s film credits include: “Like Mike” (2002), “Brown Sugar” (2002), “Just Wright”, and “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” for Lifetime Television. 41 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

Easy Steps to Growing a Beard By Bryan Bowers

Make The Commitment

It's important to realize that it takes some dedication to growing a beard especially during the early stages. You may become discouraged, frustrated and receive comments from friends and family. But, it's very rewarding and worth the effort Your success in growing a beard depends in large part on your commitment and your genetic makeup. Some people are blessed with the ability to sprout a beard in a few short weeks while others may need to spend months to get the desired look. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do in terms of genetics but with commitment you can stick through the challenging stages to see how things turn out. And, if it doesn't work out, you can shave it off in a few minutes. So if you want to grow your beard make the commitment to yourself to stick with it for at least 8 weeks. This will give you enough time to grow out a decent beard, and for you to become accustomed to maintaining it.

Start Growing Your Beard

You can start your beard whenever works best for you. Some people choose to grow it out during the winter months. Others choose to begin growing their beard during vacation while away from work. Yet others choose to grow during football/ hockey/baseball/soccer/lacrosse/etc season. Others do it to support national causes like Movember (prostate cancer research) or any other worthy charity. It really doesn't matter when you begin... just pick a date and stop shaving! One of the biggest mistakes men make is attempting to shape/ trim their beard too soon. It's best to allow 4 - 6 weeks of growth before attempting to shape the beard. Even if you're only planning to grow a goatee, chin curtain, or mustache it's best to store your razor and allow your facial hair to flourish. Why grow out a full beard for the first four weeks? -You can't determine how your beard will grow out and will likely trim too much off. -You may find that your beard fills out well in some areas and not so well in others 44 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - November 2014

-You may like one style when clean shaven but an entirely different one with sufficient growth All of these reasons can create an awkward looking beard that soon ends up in the bathroom sink. You may experience itching and/or skin irritation during the growth process. This is a quite common for many guys and not something to be concerned with. There are many aftershave treatments that can help reduce irritation and also soften facial hair. Hair conditioner and lotions can also help to reduce itching. It's important to realize that the itching is only temporary and will eventually stop.

Shaping Your Beard

After the first month it's time to shape your beard. Sometimes it makes sense to locate a barber that is familiar with shaping beards. If that's not an option then there are two areas that you need to focus on: Neck Line - Generally speaking you want the bottom of your

beard to extend past your jaw bone by an inch or two. If you take two fingers and lay them against the bottom of your jaw bone, that is where your beard should end. In addition the back of the beard should extend straight down from the back of your sideburns. Cheek Line: The rule of thumb is to leave the cheek line to grow naturally without shaping. Many beards have been ruined because men feel the compulsion to trim the cheek line. Don't do it! Don't despair if you make a mistake trimming your beard! Simply let the area grow out without shaving and it will soon fill in again. If the mistake is pretty visible another option is to trim down the length of the hairs for your entire beard and begin growing again.

Maintaining Your Beard

There are only two things you need to maintain your beard: Beard trimmer - You'll probably be using this on a daily basis to maintain the shape of your beard. Most beard trimmers have different heads to control the length of your beard hair. In addition trimmers help to remove wild hairs that occasionally stick out at weird angles. It's best to go with a cordless unit as the cord can often times get in the way during trimming. Beard comb - These combs are different in that they are small and have a short distance between the teeth which make them perfect for managing your beard. Many of the beard trimmers include a basic comb with the kit.

consider are beard scissors. They are helpful to trim the occasional wild hair and also to ensure a straight cut at the edges of your beard. For washing most guys will simply use the shampoo they're already using. Some prefer to use soap instead and it's really up to your preference. Drying your beard can be done by patting it dry with a towel, or letting it air dry which produces a more rugged look. Some products to manage out of control hair requires a blow dryer. Try each of the drying option to see which one looks the best on you. Article Source: Four Easy Steps to Growing a Beard

Beard Grooming:

3 Tips For A ‘Good Beard Day' Everyday

F

acial hair and the hair on our heads are not quite the same for a number of reasons. If you or your significant other has shaved in the past, chances are that the facial is much coarser. So when we are attempting to grow or keep a beard - the inevitable itchiness, dryness, redness will occur and when we scratch our beards we not only end up causing pain to relieve that itch but we also mess up the beard hair. There's a much simpler way - just remember to follow the three cardinal rules of beard grooming and you will be on your way to a good beard day, everyday. First and foremost when you take a shower in the morning, use a good beard shampoo or a mild beard soap to wash your beard. Ideally you want some natural good oils or aloe vera or lime - these products are good and cleaning up the dirt and buildup on your facial hair and skin pores. If you avoid this first step you'll only be setting yourself up for more itchiness later on. Rub in a small amount gently working your way to the tips and the roots of your facial hair whether its new growth or whether you've had a beard for ten years. Just massage with the tips of your fingers as gently as you can. Wash as you would normally and that's the first step. Second - while your beard hair is still wet - use a towel to gently work your way downwards. Don't go upwards otherwise you'll get it all frazzled up. Go down not up - work with gravity. While your facial hair is still a bit damp, use a beard comb or if you need to detangle (if you have a larger beard) - then use a wide-toothed comb first, because a narrow-toothed comb will pull on your tangles. Again just, like the towel, you are combing downwards, as gently and smoothly as possible. The third step is to use a good leave-in beard conditioner either as an oil or a wax form, to give you a nice hold for the day. Never use a lot just a little and then just comb again. This third step is very important because an oil such jojoba or olive is really good to reduce itching and scratching - and it will work to reduce beard dandruff.
