MWBH HAIR CARE & GIVEAWAY FANTASIA HAIR CARE

Fantasia Hair Care Celebrates 50 Years In Business Popular Ethnic Hair Product Company Launches Aloe Oil Line in Celebration

W

hen brothers Paul and Archie Bogosian started Fantasia Hair Care in the early 1960s, they had no idea how popular their line of ethnic hair products would soon become. Armed with salon ownership expertise and the knowledge that the marketplace was demanding lines of specialized products to meet an array of clientele’s needs. Fifty years later, with the majority of hair care product manufacturers out of business, the Bogosian brothers are still recognized and revered as innovators in an ever-changing industry.

“Fantasia was started in 1964 by my brother Paul and me. We were both hairstylists in New York City, and owned three successful salons. We took our craft very seriously and over time, became very interested in the products that were used in our salons. However, we realized that both retail and professional products available at that time were not meeting the needs and expectations of the hair care industry we decided to do something about it,” said Archie Bogosian. Fantasia started servicing the ethnic sector almost at the beginning of their existence. “We pride ourselves on being a multi-cultural brand—we saw this sector had a need and we are honored to serve it,” said Archie Bogosian.

To celebrate their 50th year in business, Fantasia is launching a brand new line of products that are completely new in this marketplace.

The IC Fantasia Aloe Oil hair treatment system includes the first to market Aloe Oil relaxer system. Aloe oil contains unique properties that significantly improve the moisture retention of hair while reducing the chance of breakage during the relaxing process. “The Aloe Oil plant contains eight hair strengthening amino acids, so when we formulated this system we knew how important it would be to create a relaxer treatment that offers ultimate breakage protection, said Paul Bogosian. In addition to the Aloe Oil Relaxer System, Fantasia is introducing a line of aloe oil hair maintenance products including: Aloe Strengthening Shampoo: Renews dull, lifeless hair caused by chemical and environmental damage.

>

Aloe Oil Anti-Breakage Conditioner: Increases hair strength, elasticity, and seals hair cuticle to enhance shine. Aloe Oil Moisture Renewal Leave-In: Penetrates the hair shaft to provide deep conditioning, protects from heat styling, detangles and adds luxurious softness.

Weightless, healing, dry oil for damaged hair. Controls frizz and gives hair color and highlights a luminous glow, infusing hair with moisture and sheen. The Aloe Oil relaxer is lye-free, the Aloe Oil maintenance products are all Sulfate free and paraben free.

MWBH FEATURE INTERVIEW

MWBH caught up with singer Conya Doss and got the 411 on her new album and hair cut!

Conya Doss

Soul & Style

28

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2015/July 2015

A

ffectionately called the “Queen of Indie Soul” by her loyal fans, Conya Doss brings love to your ears with her 7th studio album titled VII (Seven). We LOVED the entire album, and her hit track “Beautiful” had us stuck on repeat! With its beautiful lyrics encouraging listeners to embrace their inner beauty, this song is definitely what the music industry needs right now. SoulBounce recently said "All of the tracks on the sampler draw you in with Conya's distinctive vocals being the common thread that sews together a warm quilt of inviting, engaging songs.”

j

Conya also shares some of her other favorites on the album. ““Reach out” ...which focuses on the “art of conversation” being lost due to technology. It encourages us to take the time to call or meet with our loved ones on a personal level. “I Could Be The ONE” focuses on giving love a chance after being tainted by past relationships that were hurtful. It’s like if you never had real love, how would you know how it really feels!!”

Love The Do!

With a new album, Conya is giving us life with her new natural hair cut!

Since her debut, she has received high praises from USA Today, VIBE, Billboard, Complex Magazine, BET, Soul Train, Ledisi, Michael Baisden, DJ Jazzy Jeff, SoulTracks, and Anthony Hamilton while gracing the covers of numerous music, beauty, & lifestyle magazines. She has received the SoulTrack's Best Female Vocalist, Heineken Redstar Soul Artist of the Year, a nomination for Best Underground Artist at the BET JAwards, and listings on iTunes as Best R&B Underground. Conya Doss was recently spotted performing at a Memorial Day event at Wolf Creek Amphitheater performing with Chrisette Michele, Kindred The Family Soul, Dwele, Lyfe Jennings, Eric Roberson, Anthony David, and others.

l

Thumbs Up! MWBH gives Conya’s new album VII(Seven) a HUGE thumbs up!

Her music isn’t the only thing buzzing, everyone including us are loving her new natural cut! When we spoke with her in 2012 Ms. Doss was giving us the 411 on her favorite hair regimens and life as a singer and teacher. We had a chance to catch up with her and see whats new… Your 7th album, VII(Seven), was released in May, can you tell us more about it? Yes, it was released on May 19th, 2015. It’s title reflects the release of my 7th record. I am excited because I feel as if I have a complete body of work which is enabling me to move onto the next phase of my musical life. There is a track titled “Beautiful” that speaks on embracing your inner beauty. What inspired you to write this song? This song was actually written by Myron Davis who was inspired by stories of students being antagonized and our

CONYA DOSS Contd. concerns with today’s youth having so many self-image issues. And it’s not just the youth when we look at all of the transformation of people in the media. It is about self worth and self-validation. With these components others don’t hold the power to affect you. Will you be performing your new music anytime soon? And where can our readers catch you? Yes, on May 23rd, I performed in Atlanta, Georgia at the SOUL LIFE Music Festival. June 13th, in Detroit, I will be performing for the Kappa Alpha Psi’s “The Night Cap” and there are some more dates coming in as we speak. We love your new natural hair cut! How do you maintain your curls? Thank you!! I feel really liberated. However, the maintenance is high. I use a combination of essential oils such as olive, coconut, grapeseed, and almond oil to maintain the moisture. What products do you use to keep your curls moisturized? Along with the oils, I love Taliah Waajid’s Protective Mist Moisturizer, especially when colortreating my hair. You have beautiful skin, what beauty products do you use? Thank you!! Much of it is from my genetic pool. LOL!!! But I use pure Shea butter in the morning and evening. Fans can find more about Conya and her music at... From the hot 90’s R&B group 702, singer Meelah has been in the game bringing style to everything she does. With a style all her own, we have witnessed her evolve from a teen star to a fierce women.

Kameelah Williams, aka, Meelah was born & raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ironically enough she became the lead singer of the multi platinum trio 702, named after the Las Vegas area code. Meelah was deemed the voice of the group by her position as lead vocalist on 702’s chart topping singles such as the Missy Elliott-produced hit “Steelo” and la-

dies’ anthem “Where My Girls At”, which stayed in the top 20 on Billboard’s Top 40 Pop chart for more than 30 weeks, earning a nomination for an American Music Award. Her sultry lead vocals were also displayed on an array of other 702 hits including the R&B Top 10 power ballad “Get It Together”. The instant popularity afforded 702 the opportunity to work with Nickelodeon on their hit tv show “Cousin Skeeter” on which Meelah sang lead for the theme song. 702 went on to record 3 studio albums, winning a Lady of Soul Award for album of the year. They also recorded “Beep

From 702 To Solo Career... Talks Beauty And More! Me 911”, the Timbaland-produced hit single featured on Missy Elliott’s debut album, where Meelah & Missy shared the lead vocal spotlight. Meelah also sung lead vocals alongside Pharrell Williams on 702’s understated, yet riveting record “I Still Love You”. With international, multi-platinum success came world tours, collaborations with other major artists (New Edition, Brandy, and Brian McKnight), soundtrack recordings (Good Burger, Stuart Little), song features, and sitcom appearances (Moesha, Sister Sister). Other television appearances were made worldwide including the UK’s legendary “Top of the Pops”. 702 eventually parted ways. Once the group disbanded Meelah spread her solo wings and lent her vocals to other recording artists projects. She appeared on the song “Take Away” with Missy Elliott & Ginuwine. Meelah was featured on background vocals on the Snoop Dogg, Teddy Riley produced, song “Cool”

and wrote and collaborated with other artists such as Macy Gray. Meelah currently stars in TVOne’s hit reality based series R&B Divas ATL. She has released a new single and music video called “Give it to You” f/ Musiq Soulchild available on iTunes. And her children’s album, “We Are Different”, is also on ITunes, amazon.com, and cdbaby.com. She also boasts a budding acting career. In addition to the third season of R&B Divas ATL, Meelah also landed a starring role in Kandi Burruss’ stageplay “A Mother’s Love” as Jada, the sister of Lena, the main character, played by Kandi Burruss. She is also considering a movie role she has recently been offered. In addition to music and entertainment Meelah is also involved in fashion and beauty. She is the spokesmodel/face of Revel Cosmetics. Her signature lipstick color is called “Complicated” and “Fvck&Love” eyeshadow. Both available at revelbyjl.com. Raising awareness is very important to Meelah. As the mother of a 5 year old son, Zac, who was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), she has established a foundation to raise awareness for Autism & special needs children called P.R.O.U.D (Parents Reaching Out to Understand Developmental Delays). Meelah, Musiq Soulchild and P.R.O.U.D. teamed up to present an Autism Awareness event in Atlanta earlier this year that was featured on R&B Divas ATL. Meelah’s passion for music and Autism awareness has led to her nomination as an honoree at the 2014 2nd Annual Beauty In/Beauty Out (B.I.B.O.) Tour

F

inding ways to maintain your relaxed hair during a workout leaves most women perplexed and is a common issue in the African American woman’s workout. While there is no magic scarf or flawed hairstyle that won’t be affected by the sweat and heat produced during a workout, these tips may help you in between relaxers: High and Dry Keeping relaxed hair up, off the shoulders, preferably in a loose ponytail, with a lightweight silk or satin scarf aids in maintaining the preferred texture of relaxed hair. After the workout, take the lightweight scarf off but do not take the hair down until it is completely dry. This routine will lessen the unwanted texture change that accompanies a relaxed hair workout. Heat, sweat and tears Heat escapes from the top of the

head making it one of the major places for sweat. During a workout, this can result in the scalp being itchy and immensely uncomfortable. Shampooing may seem like the best option but excessive shampooing will lead to extreme scalp dryness and overall dry, brittle hair. Instead of shampooing, try combating an itchy and uncomfortable scalp with weekly coconut oil applica-

tions and adding an apple cider vinegar rinse to treat the hair cuticles. Extra Heat Skip over the flat irons and hot heat, post-workout styling regimen and opt for air drying in loose or free hairstyles. If time doesn’t permit the air drying option, try using a blow dryer with a cool air setting. www.MidwestBlackHair.com

Who is Janice Lennard? I was born in 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and have been involved with ballet, yoga and pilates through study, practice, and instruction for over 65 years. My early immersion in artistic expression through dance explains my ability to keep focused and my love of teaching keeps me busy seven days a week.

I noticed that you have a background in ballet, yoga, pilates- how did you become involved ? By the age of 7, my Mother enrolled me in the Kelly School of Dance in New Orleans and by age 12,1 was receiving individual lessons in classical ballet under the tutelage of Bob Coleman, a well-known icon of live theatre in the French Quarter. At the age of 20 I moved to California, where I continued my dance education, including 25 years at the Lichine Ballet Academy in Beverly Hills, CA where I regularly danced alongside Alexander Godunov, Cyd Charise, and others. To help me stay in shape for dancing I started yoga and pilates which I still love! At the age of 72 you look like you are in your late 50's how do you keep yourself looking so young? I believe that being physically active is #1 on the path to youthfulness. Stress reduction is another youth enhancer. By the time I finish yoga, I am completely relaxed. So exercise is a key element in reducing stress. Eating well and in moderation helps with weight management which is another simple way to get that youthful look and feel. Of course, I must admit the ultimate credit for youthfulness is due to genetics. You have a pilates, yoga and ballet dvd what can one learn from your dvd? How to relax, gain strength, endurance, balance, awareness and a strong core. What do you recommend someone around your age to try and get there back into shape? Pilates is excellent for building a strong core which will relieve lower back pain. Remember to do what you can without pushing yourself too far and getting hurt. Take it easy. Always enjoy whatever you are doing and relax. What can we expect from Janice during the year of 2015? I will continue doing what I love, teaching ballet barre, yoga and pilates.

Matte Lips: How to Wear Matte Red by Nikki Carey

W red lipstick.

hen you a wear matte red lipstick it can be either flattering or unappealing. There is no in-between. The texture of matte lipsticks makes them less forgiving than other lipsticks. But with these tips, you will master how to wear matte

The Key To A Perfect Matte Red Lipstick is Healthy Lips! Dull, scaly, and dry lips are more noticeable with a matte textured lipstick. So start with exfoliated and moisturized lips. Use your Clarisonic or your Olay Pro Cleansing brush - which is a drugstore version of the Clarisonic. Don’t have either? Use your toothbrush. Take 30 to 45 seconds to exfoliate your lips using gentle, circular motions to remove dead skin. Now, Let’s Moisturize. After exfoliation, your lips are thirsty for moisture. My favorite product to use is Maybelline’s Baby Lips but Vaseline or any or any other lip balm you have on hand works fine too. Apply it liberally to exfoliated lips. Your lips are exfoliated so the moisturizer can really get in there and do its job. Now, your lips should feel rejuvenated, refreshed, soft, supple, plump and ready for your lipstick. Be Choosy! Choosing the right matte shade is crucial. The wrong shade can make or break your matte lipstick application. The motto is go bold or go home! Deep matte reds, berries, plums and fuchsias are great. Using a pale color can make your lips look dull and pasty. Always Line, Outline and Fill. Once you choose the right shade, choose a matching lip liner. Define lips with the liner by paying special attention to your

cupid’s bow and corners. Finish up by filling lips in with the pencil. This will keep matte lipstick looking better longer. There will be less patchiness and less feathering too. Hey, Keep it Clean! Using a lip liner will help with your lipstick application but you still need crisp, clean lines. Crisp and clean lines equal an amazing red matte lip every time. Use a little concealer and a concealer brush (or Qtip) to clean up imperfections. Don’t forget to set the concealer with a translucent or pressed powder. Matte red lipsticks are trending everywhere. Just thumb through any magazine the next time you’re waiting in the checkout line. You will see celebrities are obsessing over bold, matte lips. Who can blame them? They look great on everyone. The key is knowing how to apply it so you are guaranteed a flawless, amazing application every time. How to Best Apply Mascara by Kelsea M Barker

ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO APPLY MASCARA

T

echnique is so important when applying mascara. The way you get your eyelashes to look beautiful is all in the way you apply it! You don't even need a special product, any drugstore mascara will work just fine. These techniques are really easy and impressive! You will get complements on your eyelashes for sure, and it doesn't even require that much effort or time at all. Read on to find out how to do this! If you curl your eyelashes, make sure to do it before you put on mascara, so the curler doesn't get stuck.

Step 1:

Most people start applying mascara from their roots up. But this is not the way to start! The best way to make your eyelashes look longer is by starting at the top! Get your mascara brush and only do the tops of your eyelashes. Don't even worry about the roots yet. Go over them a lot of times and then go on to the other eye while you wait for them to dry. This will get the very tops of your eyelashes looking a lot longer than normal, which is what we're going for!

Step 2:

you do it right. Once you've done step 1 and step 2, go on to put mascara on the backs of your lashes. Many makeup artists use this trick. The majority of people only put mascara only on the front but they don't realize that by putting it on the back the eyelashes will look better! It will make them look thicker and fuller. This is a great thing to do if you want your eyelashes to be really noticeable.

Step 4:

If you want the cute little flick at the end of your eye, get the end of your mascara brush and go over the end of your eye a few times starting from the roots up. You don't want to put a lot of mascara on the ends of your eyelashes but putting a little bit more can look cuter. It emphasizes the ends of your eyelashes, which is hard to achieve with just mascara. This step is also optional. Do whatever you feel your lashes will look best with!

Step 5:

I also highly recommend that you apply mascara on the bottom eyelashes. It will frame your eyes, making them look a lot cuter. You don't want to put a lot on the bottom though, so just kind of rub your brush around until you get the amount you want.

Now you should do your roots. If you want them to seem fuller, go over them many times. If not, only go over them a couple of times. If you want them really full, apply the mascara to the roots, wait for that side to dry, and then put on another coat. You can still go up all the way to the tops of your lashes when you do this, but this might make it a bit clumpy so you just have to be careful.

This is hands down the best way to apply mascara! Practice it and try it out!

Step 3:

The 411: Top 5 Beauty Dislikes of Men

B

by Dr. Linda Amerson

eauty comes in many sizes, shapes and ethnicities. Women spend so much money on themselves for beauty from head to toe to attract men. In addition, women look at celebrities as role models, when they hire a team of specialists to keep them looking glamorized. Sadly, children and teenagers are also copying the looks of celebrities with starvation diets, and bulimia to stay a certain size…then plastic surgery as a graduation request! Everyday beauty advertisers show images of women of what society perceives as beautiful, and acceptable. Therefore, I asked several men to share their beauty viewpoints. They have shared the top five things they regard as a ‘turn off’ regarding a woman’s beauty. Read the interesting answers shared to enlighten women.

Talance Sawyer, Retired NFL Player for the Minnesota Vikings 1) A woman that’s wearing costumes not showing her natural God given beauty creating false illusions. 2) A woman that does not take her health serious. 3) A woman that is always judgemental base on her past experiences. Every man is not the same! 4) A woman who’s conversation is mostly about finances. 5) Last but not least, a woman who doesn’t like to cook and constantly wants to eat out.

John Boston,

Kenneth Earl Davis, supervisor at a Residental Treatment Center for Boys ‘Beauty Has It’s Own Destiny!’ 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

TOO much MAKEUP is a MAJOR Turn Off…Natural is better. HAIR is something that is a MUST! NO HAIR is a turn off as well! Super long NAILS is another. Tattoos that are on the NECK or FACE AREA is another one. Body percing in face or eye area.

Just be you, that is true beauty at its finest!

Naturally Skintelligent Products

1) Bad attitudes 2) Too tightly fitted clothing…buy your size please! 3) Smoking 4) Too much MAKEUP 5) Bad teeth…get them fixed!

Greg Johnson,

Percy Ray,

Radio Personality

A.M.P. Advertising, Marketing, Promotions

1) I’m turned off by a negative attitude. It takes away the inner beauty of the woman, which makes the outer appearance ugly to me. 2) Wearing too much makeup. You want to enhance the beauty not take it over the top. 3) A selfish woman is a turn off. If she’s not a giver, if she expects anything in return from a person. Do it because you want to. 4) Hair extensions should blend with your skin and your natural hair. Ex: Over the top blondes, not all skin tones works with. I like natural, but if you’re going to wear a weave, please do it right. 5) A woman with no drive. Waiting on the man to take care of things. Have some goals and work to meet them…set new goals and continue. 6) I have to add this…a woman that does not know how to communicate in an adult manner! Listening skills is a MUST!!! It’s the biggest part of communication.

1) Hair extensions - hate them…too many styles to choose from while staying natural (too costly) 2) Makeup – zero to none… want to see what I will wake up to! 3) Fragrance a must! Wake up smelling good and go to bed smelling angelic! 4) Feet and hands have to be well manicured, anything else uncivilized. 5) Inner beauty (spiritual) goes further than exterior beauty…that fades away!

Conclusion, men like and look for certain qualities in a woman. We hope this information enlightened you to stop stressing excessively about your image! Live, Love, Laugh!
