2011 Carnaval in Baja Style

Nothing brings in the crowds and exemplifies an aura of fun, freedom and frolic like the Carnaval celebration in communities throughout Baja. Carnaval is held the week before Ash Wednesday. This year, it will be held March 3-8, 2011. It is one last chance to revel and relish in indulgence and carefree abandonment before the strict practice of lent begins. The catholic practice of lent is a time to adhere to an abstinence or self-imposed restraint from your vices or a time to refrain from earthly pleasures. This is a way of recognizing the sacrifices Jesus made during his 40 days in the desert. Before this period of deprivation begins, revelers, Catholics and anyone who enjoys a great time celebrates by indulging in excesses. This is why carnaval in Baja is a time to really let loose and join in the local traditions. The Latin origin for carnaval literally translates to “goodbye to the flesh”. The celebration as it is known today in Baja dates back to the 19th century. While things naturally tend to get a little on the wild side, hundreds of thousands of visitors and local participants in La Paz, Ensenada, and San Felipe, have a safe and memorable time each year. The police and local authorities work diligently to ensure the safety and security of the expected half a million visitors and locals alike. While the consumption of alcohol is part of the celebration, the police will not tolerate out of control or dangerous behavior. There are plenty of designated areas for alcohol consumption that allow for a good time to be had by all, whether they imbibe or not. Carnaval traditionally begins with the burning of El Mal Humor (the bad mood). This is done through the burning of an effigy of a currently unpopular politician. Confetti and fireworks follow. Then, there are daily parades held in the cities with different themes for each region, elaborately floral decorated floats, contests, bands, and plenty of dancing in the streets. Carnaval typically ends with a finale parade and the Entierro de Juan Carnaval (the burial of all that is impure). This leads straight into the beginning of lent. Rosarito Beach has pledged to "lay the foundation for a better future carnival every
year", and on March 3 to 8 Rosarito will be working on that foundation with high quality entertainment to benefit all ranging from parades, floats and dances, to the election of the queen, the burning of bad humor “Quema de Mal Humor” and election of the Ugly King "El Rey Feo", among other activities. Ensenada will follow many of the same traditions this year. The opening of the fiesta and the "Quema de Mal Humor" will take place on the 3rd. The crowning celebration will be on the 4th. On the 5th, spectators can take in the first carnaval parade, the kid’s art competition, and the chess and athletic competitions. The second parade will be on the 6th. On the 7th, you can enjoy the Marido Oprimido Gala Dancing. Finally on the 8th, the last carnaval parade will take place, as will the dress competition and the traditional closing funeral celebration of Juan Carnaval. San Felipe has a smaller Carnaval than some of the others towns, but still provides a great celebration for the community and visitors. It’s been a popular event in San Felipe with rotating floats, parades, dances and rides. This year’s celebration is a time of the year that can be the busiest for this little fishing village on the sea. There is has recently been local talks about making San Felipe Carnaval an evento espectacular.
La Paz, known for its world class fishing, will host events following along the theme of Naturaleza Viva (Nature Alive). Most events in La Paz will take place at the Esplanade, along Malecon. There will be parades on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. On the 3rd, the coronation of the King of Happiness will be held. On the 4th, the Queen of Carnaval and the Royal Court will be presented. The King and Queen of Poetry will be picked on the following day. On the 6th, the parade at Marcos de Leon will be held. On the 7th, the Royal Court will visit the senior citizens home, La Paz Orphanage and San Vicente. While each community puts its own spin on the events and adds slight variances to the traditions, it is a time for fun and togetherness for all citizens and a time for visitors to see something unique to each region. The game of florals is the highlight for children. For visitors, the many enthusiastic vendors along each parade route promise authentic Mexican cuisine and gifts. The floats that roll through the streets are always a source of pride and sponsored by various groups. Just as with mardi gras, carnaval is synonymous with wildly decorated masks, necklaces and more confetti than you may ever see in one place again. Typically, the events are free to the public and there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy.

grabs. Pro car and truck class awards include the SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards for drivers who compete every mile of the 5 race season in Baja. There is also the coveted SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year Award and the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year Award. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the SCORE Baja 250. The race was first held in 1982 and has been held in San Felipe each year with the exception of 2007. There were a few years when the race was not held at all; but it has since become a mainstay for San Felipe and it has also become extremely important to the local economy. Each year, race fans and participants descend on the area to take in the sights, sounds and excitement the event and the San Felipe region brings to all.
Racing season is alive and well this year in Baja. The SCORE Baja 250 is set to take place March 11- 13, 2011. This year’s race will start and finish at the San Felipe Arches on Highway 5. The actual course promises to show participants the “Best of Baja”. The final course will incorporate parts of both the 2009 and the 2010 routes. It will be filled with challenging and exhilarating moguls, sand, rocks and canyons that will surely keep even the most seasoned racers on their toes, clutching their steering wheels with eyes wide open.
Race organizers expect many champions, thrill seekers and spectators from last year to return to Baja for the event. Last year, participants from 25 states and 10 different countries competed in the various categories. There were 28 pro and 6 sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATV’s. Early estimates put the entries for this year at around 275. For motorcycle and ATV racers, 6 a.m. Saturday, March 12th is the official start time. The car and truck classes will begin at roughly 10 a.m. There are class point championship places and monetary winnings of $400,000 up for
One much beloved citizen who consistently put his heart and soul into the event is being honored this year. This year’s race is dedicated to the memory of Jose “Pepe” Limon. He died last November at the age of 73. He acted as the SCORE Mexican Liaison for many years and left an indelible mark on the event. There is a massive list of sponsors and supporters of the SCORE Baja 250 this year and the list continues to grow with each race. MasterCraft Safety and Tecate are co-title sponsors of the 25th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. There is a great need in Baja and many people have selflessly stepped up to the plate to do what they can to help. There are many children living in Baja who lack what most take for granted every day—a stable, secure, loving home with parents and basic necessities. There are several orphanages and children’s organizations that are currently struggling in Baja to provide these needs for the children who are at the greatest risk of slipping through the cracks. The orphan problem in Baja is a growing concern as the global economy causes more and more mothers and single parents to work harder and longer. This, along with the abandonment and abuse of other children, has led to many kids being taken from their homes or the streets by the Mexican Government. DIF, the Social and Family Services Department of the government places orphaned, endangered or displaced children in orphanages but do not actually provide the much needed long term financial support those children undoubtedly need. When a child is taken by the government and placed in an alternative setting, all of their food, clothing, educational needs, and basic necessities are all provided by charity and faith based facilities. While DIF goes to great lengths to ensure children are safe, it takes the work of many tireless volunteers to meet their long term needs. Many of these organizations hold their own fundraisers and rely on continuous help from friends and supporters. The Baja Love Ride bike event will be rolling through Baja and giving all funds raised to the children’s charities and orphanages that need help. One children’s organization that will benefit from the funds raised by the Baja Love Ride is the Doors of Faith Orphanage. This facility is located in La Mision, about an hour south of San Diego. Doors of Faith has been in operation since 1962 when Curtis and Sylvia Freeze turned an abandoned ranch into a permanent home for children. The orphanage currently supports and cares for 112 children, ranging from newborns to teenagers. 90% of the children are brought to the home by Mexican Social Services. Some children are brought there because of severe financial hardship on the family. In these cases, parents are strongly encouraged to visit their children while they are in the care of Doors of Faith. This nondenominational Christian home does provide a spiritual base for the children and the folks in charge work hard to instill family and social values so the children may grow to be healthy and productive citizens in Baja. The

those who devote their time to Doors of Faith are able to guide and nurture the children in their care, monetary assistance is always needed. Administrator, DJ Schuetze says, “We depend entirely on individuals who support our work so when an event like the Baja Love Ride comes along to help the many orphanages in Baja, it means a great deal and has a direct impacat on the care we’re able to give the children in our care.” El Oasis Orphanage opened its doors in 1997 and also relies on donations and the help the Baja Love Ride hopes to give. There ar currently 54 kids who need basic necessities and educational support. This orphanage is somewhat isolated in the mountains of Valle de la Trinidad, about 70 miles northwest of San Felipe. They ask that anyone wanting to help directly contact the home first to see what supplies are needed at any particular time. Most often, El Oasis needs updated appliances, school supplies, furnishings, bulk food like beans, rice, sugar, flour, powdered milk and toiletries such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste. The Motorsport community, namely the Malcolm Smith Motorsport Foundation, does a great deal to help this particular orphanage and is always looking for new ways to provide support. The foundation has helped with general funding, bikes, toys at Christmas, clean well and water purification equipment, a van and a basketball court. Casa de Fe is another orphanage that is in need of funding and will receive help from the donations made to the Baja Love Ride. Casa de Fe is a home that provides a true family environment for children who need it most. The home has a house mother and father, a traditional dining table, and living area. The children are nurtured, loved and taught true family values that they can carry out into the world once they leave Casa de Fe. Daily needs for the children add up. They rely solely on donations to feed, clothe, educate, and secure a future for the children. The facility provides a real loving home that encourages good citizenship and cultural values. They need funds to help pay for utilities for the homes, food, and transportation and insurance. Currently, money and cleaning supplies are desperately needed. Bill and Carol Spradlin, a couple who have seen this project from vision to completion appeal for any help anyone is willing to give. Carol says, “We need to have enough money in the bank to ensure that our doors will stay open until the end of the year.” This couple has literally poured their own money, hearts and souls into ensuring these Baja orphans have all they need. As for what keeps them struggling to keep the doors open other than sheer determination, Carol says, “It
is very rewarding to see the difference that it has made in their lives.” There are also organizations that provide for and support the children of Baja who are not orphans. These organizations also go out of their way to keep the children safe, fed, and educated. They primarily provide preventative care and counseling, before families are forced or required to give up their children, and they provide child care for families who otherwise would have to leave their children alone all day. The Rosarito Beach Boys and Girls Club is relying on the model that has a proven track record for keeping kids safe and out of trouble. For two years, Rosy Torres and others have been working to see the club get up and running. The club will give care to children ages 6 to 16 and help children develop skills in the areas of technology, sports, the arts, language and help with school work. The club will teach children how to become active and positive members of the community. Rosy Torres and the others involved know that when children are left on their own while parents work, they are more likely to get involved with gangs, violence, drugs and other delinquency based crimes and lifestyles. The Boys and Girls Club will give assistance and child care to those who need it most. Torres contends, “It will give kids a safe, productive place to grow, learn and play.” Torres adds the ideals embraced and practiced by the Boys and Girls Club is “proven to work for over 140 years from the Boys and Girls Club of America.” The Open Arms Day Care also strives to help children and families before government intervention is needed. They, too, will receive much needed aid from the Baja Love Ride. Open Arms Day Care provides child care at no cost. Director Heidi Elizarraraz says, the day care gives “help for families before they are at their breaking point of giving their children up voluntarily to orphanages or leaving them home alone to fend for themselves.” This preventative strategy aims to keep families together. They provide bible study classes, academic support, and life education. The day care center has adopted an “open arms” outreach policy to try to take in every family in need they possibly can. They consider their establishment a light amongst the darkness. This safe haven for working families, and those who have nowhere else to go during the days, also offers parenting classes and meetings to keep families in the
loop about their child’s successes at the center. They also are solely operated thanks to donations and are in need of further financial support. While these organizations will receive funds through the Baja Love Ride, the need will always be there and each one of these places will always require constant assistance to keep providing the level of care and support for the children of Baja. The orphan situation throughout the peninsula will not be solved overnight. Each facility, be it an orphanage or day care center, has their own individual needs and struggles. If you truly wish to help, it is vital that you contact the specific place near you and see what they truly need the most. Some of the facilities that care for many
children started out as a couple taking in one or two children. Out of need, grows more and more orphanages and homes that give them some semblance of a normal childhood. Virtually all need financial support, food, clothes, school supplies, cleaning supplies, and efforts from caring volunteers. If you plan a trip to an orphanage, call ahead to see what is needed and when it is best to come. Some of the facilities, including those listed above, struggle week to week to provide what is needed for the children under their roofs. Donating or participating in the Baja Love Ride is a great way to start helping out; but the inspiration and determination to better the lives of these kids that the race hopes to inspire in those who can help will last a lifetime and have an immeasurable impact on the lives of the children.
