Immigration Law Changes Affect Absentee Voting Process The

absolute worst thing any snowbird or other American citizen staying in Mexico for a long period could do is to assume that nothing changes while they are out of the United States. Things do change, on both sides of the border, and every American citizen in Baja and other Mexican states needs to take it upon him or herself to stay current on the laws, policies, and issues that affect them regardless of how much time they spend across the border.

One area that snowbirds and retirees

need to be proactive and get informed about is the 2012 election. The process of choosing the President of the United States, and many local state representatives and officials begins immediately in the New Year. Because of the changes in the immigration laws, absentee ballots will no longer be automatically mailed out based on previous request like in the past. The past request for ballots used to be all that was needed in order to receive these ballots from afar each year. Now due to the news laws, a Federal Post Card Application is needed in order to receive an absentee ballot. The easiest and most efficient way to do this is to go to www.fvap. gov.
