Orlando District Fire Chief Works to Make Orlando Strides Run Smoothly Felix Benitez, Orlando District Fire Chief and Orlando Strides 2016 Operations Chair, worked behind the scenes to ensure the walk was a great event. Originally from Puerto Rico, Felix grew up in New Jersey and NYC, later attending Alfred University. He moved to Florida to become a firefighter, serving in Seminole County for 8 years before serving the City of Orlando. He worked in Paramore, the busiest station, achieving promotions from Fireman to Engineer to District Chief. He has also served as an EMT and paramedic. From a young age, Felix naturally gravitated to helping others. “I’ve always been helping people, doing one thing or another. Firefighting turned out to be it for me. You see the best of people at the worst of times and the worst of people at the best of times. I have to be a steady sight for area.”

Cancer Connection The Association of Firefighters works directly with the American Cancer Society, wearing and selling T-shirts during October to raise awareness and research dollars. “I took on our T-shirt campaign five to six years ago and every year it’s gotten bigger and bigger.

I organize all the departments in Central Florida to get everyone wearing a very similar shirt throughout the month to grow unity,” Felix said. His goal is to convince all fire chiefs in Central Florida to participate for maximum impact. Felix has found that the vast majority of firefighters have had a personal tie with cancer, helping them understand the full cancer journey. “We have guy who just retired, a great individual, a great firefighter. He went through treatment while still on duty. After his last bout, he had to retire. We see and help a lot of sick people, all the time.”

Walker Security Walker safety is the utmost priority for Felix. His crew is acutely familiar with Downtown Orlando. They do constant scenario trainings, working closely with the Orlando Police Department, to revamp and perfect their security protocols. Prior to the walk his crew met to discuss increased security. They had volunteers looking out for suspicious or out of the ordinary things so nothing detracted from a great event with no mishaps.

Felix’s operations role kept him busy on the day of, making sure all parts of the walk behind the curtains were in the right places. “We got everything going for the first 3 hours, helping with registration and having all aspects running smoothly,” said Felix. “After the walk we made sure everything was off the streets, turning the city back to Orlando.”
