FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK To begin with, I am extremely happy while I share with all readers that Tulip is NOW a year old. I could not have asked for anything better! This issue marks the beginning of the second year with which are the increased expectations from the readers, as they want to view new content and have a new look and feel altogether. It’s natural! Although (at times) it’s hard to figure out what exactly readers love to read, we shall put in all out efforts to make sure we come up with something new and different in every forthcoming issue and live up to their expectations. Its mid-summer already in Hyderabad and the first thing to cross our minds are Mangoes. So this issue has articles, all about the resistibly irresistible King of Fruits. Apart from that there are detailed focuses on Health, featuring precautions for a pregnant woman and The Best Summer Holiday Destinations in the world. Eye care becomes mandatory, particularly under this scorching sun and also because it mirrors your heart! Soha Ali Khan is on the cover for this issue. A candid conversation with Tulip, where she talks about her relationship with Brother Saif, Father Pataudi and about the movie – ‘Life Goes On’, which also features her mother – Sharmila Tagore and also her future projects. Since every second Sunday of May is Mothers’ Day, we pay a tribute to this divine personality – mother. The ‘Royal Wedding’ of William and Kate, which the whole world witnessed, was the most sophisticated event this year and Tulip captures the best moments and highlights of it.
Three things I have learnt in this issue Mangoes will always be the eternal summer fruit and there is no competition when it comes to taste. They are nutrient rich and have low calories! You don’t only eat them raw but is an excellent ingredient for yummy dishes. Some weddings hold the power to bring the whole world together, as did the ROYAL WEDDING of William and Kate, in the Buckingham Palace. The story of love, romance, royalty and responsibility has just started. Mother is the epitome of love and beauty for any child and no matter where we are or what we do, no one or nothing can replace a Mother’s diligent care and love. On mother’s day, we here have a tribute to the most beautiful side of a woman – Mother.

‘Nervous about it’ Sam Claflin to Access Hollywood

British heartthrob and ‘Pirates’ star Samuel George Claflin, who is a fresh face on board for the movie ‘On Stranger Tides’, revealed that he was a little nervous initially, to act aside the ace, Johnny Depp on the movie sets. “I played it cool, especially meeting Johnny Depp for the first time. I was like, ‘No, he’ll come to me.’ Um, he didn’t. So I had to kind of go like [a] sheep [to meet him]. But yeah, everyone’s been so welcoming here right from the very beginning of the shoot’’. He continued with a smile saying – ‘I’ve mostly maintained the kind of calm nerves and a level head, I think, but it’s been the most amazing experience. I’ve learned so much.’’ With his career moving steadily forward, the 24-year-old will next hit the big screen opposite ‘The Twilight Saga’ beauty Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” as he will play a role of her prince charming.

She said – ‘Believe it or not, but it’s a dream for me. I always had the faith that I would be coming back. Saif is shooting at Filmistan studios, Goregaon and Priyanka for Karan Johar’s Agneepath in Versova. What raises eyebrows is that Priyanka and Kareena are known rivals and thus, Saif does not share a very good rapport with Piggy Chops. Priyanka was in Filmistan for an ad shoot and insisted Dinesh to show her Agent Vinod’s set which sent Bebo flaring with rage. Farah Khan is making her Bollywood debut at the age of 40 and that too in a Parsi love story directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s sister, Bela. For a record, Farah and Sanjay shared a cold shoulder in the past and when asked by the curious media of why Farah, he laughs, “It is the best way of taking revenge on her”. Then getting serious, he adds, “I thought she suited the role perfectly. It’s a funny and very tender and quaint love story of a Parsi couple. And the character of Shirin suits her perfectly. his indeed has been a lucky year for people who have tied their knots. The knot that officially declares ‘man and wife’ and the love that is bound to be ‘forever’. And the film industry has witnessed the best marriages this wedding season. Right from the Bollywood diva, Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi’s wedding at a church in Goa, which of course witnessed the presence of the big stars of Bollywood; to the ‘hiclass’ or as people say ‘the replica of the Abhi-Ash wedding’ of the Tollywood heart-throb Allu Arjun with his girlfriend Sneha. Jr. NTR, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Junior (I’m sure many of us do not know the Full name!), is not only the grandson of N. T. Rama Rao, but himself has a very big name in the Tollywood. And this eligible bachelor was taken a year back when he got engaged to the daughter of Narne Srinivas Rao, a television channel owner and the niece of the Telugu Desam President Chandra Babu Nahi, Laxmi Pranathi. In spite of the 10 years age difference, they make an attractive couple! Both the families have made sure no stone was left unturned to make the wedding as grand as possible. The kanchi sari that Laxmi had worn for the marriage ceremonies is said to be designed specially and cost a moolah of Rs. 50 lakhs. The auspicious occasion witnessed the presence of Balakrishna along with his family, Chandra Babu Naidu with his family, Purandeshwari with Venkateshwar Rao were among those from the Nandamuri family who greeted the couple. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Ramoji Rao, Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan, Nagarjuna-Amla, Naga Chaitanya, Mahesh Babu, Brahmanandam and many others graced the event. It was also reported that Jr. NTR’s father-in-law gifted him a luxurious building in the city which costs around Rs. 20 Crores, apart from the luxurious car gift which costs Rs. 1 Crore. Woah! Not Easy Turkish GP in 90 Seconds

Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso who finished third in the race of Turkish Grand Prix, said that overtaking is never easy in Formula 1. He also said - “I think it was fine. The overtaking we saw was more from tyre-performance difference than DRS and I like it. It’s is a new F1 compared to last year and we are getting used to it.’ The DRS was introduced by F1’s bosses this season with the aim of making overtaking easier - but not too easy. The system, which gives cars a straight-line speed boost when activated, works by moving a flap on the rear wing to reduce aerodynamic down force and therefore, cut drag. Drivers can activate it in a zone on one of a track’s straights if they are within a second of the car in front at a specific point prior to that straight. At the end of the race, he seemed happy about his performance and said he would be looking forward to perform better.

Meanwhile, in Italy’s Serie - A, Juventus were held to a 2-2 home draw by Chievo, a result that leaves them seventh in the table and in danger of missing out on European football next season.

Serbian Novak Djokovic beats Spaniard Rafael Nadal for the first time on clay court to claim the Madrid Masters title and extend his winning streak in 2011 to 32 matches. The 7-5 6-4 straight sets victory stunned the partisan crowd in the Spanish capital as Djokovic stepped up his bid to usurp Nadal as world number one. Djokovic has now beaten Nadal in the last three Masters finals in Indian Wells, Miami and now in Madrid. “I walked onto the court thinking I could win. I’m very happy with the way I played. This court was fast today, and I took advantage,” said Djokovic. Rajini Reddy talks about her bond with her mother, the values she imbibed from her and also shares some rather interesting anecdotes which dot her memories. While the experiences relayed may be unique, the essence of the bond itself is a universal one that transcends caste, creed or religion. Read on to re-discover that inexplicable bond that only a mother and daughter can share.. On her family background... Rajini hails from an affluent and highly literate family with strong roots in Hyderabad. The youngest of three siblings and the only daughter, she is an Australian Permanent Resident, but currently based in Hyderabad, working as an Assistant Vice President at a Global Banking and Financial Services Company. Her father, Fabian Reddy retired is a General Manager at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and lives in Sydney. Her Mother, Indira Reddy was an educator in the township school and passed away a few years ago. Her oldest brother, Rajiv availed voluntary retirement as a Major in the Indian Army, when he was injured during the Kargil war and is now settled in Sydney with his wife and three kids (two boys and a girl). The second brother, Sanjay lives with his wife and little son in Los Angeles and is involved in Media Investment Advisory.
Relationship with my mother‌ All mother-child relationships are special, but I’d like to think that the relationship I shared with my mother tops them all. She was at once my best friend and also my worst critic. When I was growing up, she was always the first to chastise me if I did anything wrong and also the first to reward me when I deserved
it and this continued into my adult years. The bond we shared was unconditional and selfless. The way we just instinctively understood each other is something inexplicable. She made me realize that a mother is not someone you can lean on, but someone who makes leaning on unnecessary by just always being there - guiding, caring and nurturing.

If ever there was an award to be granted to one person for playing multiple roles to the hilt - that would undoubtedly go to a mother. From teacher, nurse, cook, house keeper, disciplinarian, friend, philosopher, guide, to even cheer leader, the roles she

plays are too many to enumerate. Indeed in these varied roles she provides the loving care and support needed by children during their formative years and instills the values that they grow up with. The nurturing a mother provides is unparalleled to any other and is a vital part of person’s mental fabric. My own mother was all that and more to me. From a loving friend to a tyrant at times, she made me into what I am today. She taught me to believe in myself and chased after my dreams and not let anything stand in the way of me achieving them, especially not the fact that I was a woman. Integrity, honesty, loyalty and respect for elders are values which I have imbibed from my mother and this has held me in good stead, over the years. At times when am not sure how to tackle a situation, a good friend’s advise to me is to do what I think my Mum would have done if she were in my shoes and it always works.
Childhood days with my mother… Few of my most cherished childhood memories are of delicious aromas wafting out of the kitchen, a pantry always well stocked with goodies hand made by Mum, grand Christmases, a house
teeming with guests and relatives, lively birthday parties, long family chats sitting around the dining table well after the meal was done and so much more. My Dad used to refer to her as ‘Mother Superior’ (not in the religious sense of the term, but for her superior skills with juggling her work as a full time educator and her household responsibilities) - and that she was indeed. ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’ she would often say and she put that maxim to good use while reprimanding my brothers and me. At times like that I wished I was one of the pet dogs instead because they seemed to have a far more cushy life than me. That feeling soon passed, as we came to see the value in her chastising.
With Dad on his 75th Birthday for hours on end about everything and nothing. My Mum held a Masters in English Literature and Bachelors in Psychology and so we’d have some very deep and meaningful conversations and some very frivolous ones. She often loved to scare me out by telling me that she knew exactly what I was thinking, which was quite scary. Sometimes when the driver didn’t show, we used to venture out by ourselves on shopping expeditions and trips to relatives, with me behind the wheel and Mum acting as the navigator. This one time, we even participated in a car race organized by Family World. She was the navigator and I guess that wasn’t really her calling, as we got totally lost. We obviously didn’t win and I whined about it. My Mum then told me that it wasn’t winning that mattered, but the participation. As long as we knew we had given it our best shot, nothing else mattered, she said to me and that was a lesson learnt for life. The other good times I shall always cherish are when Dad and she visited me in Melbourne after I had moved there. Long after her passing away I found a diary in which she had written that her trip to Australia was one of her most unforgettable moments in life. We had many a good time and some very hilarious ones too. One memory that stands out in my mind is when she took a dive down an escalator - unintentionally of course. We were out shopping at Melbourne Central and we needed to take the escalator to get to the next level. My Mum, who I had always known to be bold and fearless, suddenly refused to get onto the escalator. As we could not locate the lifts, we managed to get her to step on after much cajoling. Mid-way up I suddenly felt a tug on my sleeve and the next thing I knew, I was on

my back with my Mum pinned underneath me. I wasn’t a light weight by any stretch of imagination and my Mum did feel the brunt of it. She never stepped onto another escalator for the rest of her three month stay with me. It was very exasperating at times back then, but so endearing when I think back on it now.
On her mom’s interests and hobbies... She loved dogs with a passion and sometimes my Dad would teasingly say that she loved the pets more than him. In fact I recall a time when one of her cousins was proudly relating some feats achieved by her grand kid and my Mum kept saying that her dog Zulu could do the same, until she was politely reminded that she was likening a child to a dog. She had green fingers and always maintained a beautiful garden taking time to care for and nurture the plants herself. Cooking up a storm for family and friends was second nature to her. She was known for her culinary skills and guests almost always left home bursting at the seams. Which probably explains my constant battle with the bulge, her food was too good to resist. She had a great appetite for reading and devoured anything she could lay her hands on, from comics to classics. She loved listening to music and singing. She was also actively involved in charity work and would frequent the Home for the Aged and Mother Teresa’s Home for destitute women very often, bringing good cheer to the inmates along with gifts and eats. Funniest incident… When she had a heart attack my sister-in-law and I went in to the ICU to check on her after she had recovered reasonably and found her sitting up in bed with her hair in two pigtails like a school girl. She then said to us that the Cardiologist had just paid a visit and said that after the stent implantation, she had the heart of a teenager. However, she would need to be monitored, as her heart beat was still a little bit “erotic”! Looking at our confused expressions she said, he meant “erratic” of course. Such was her ability to see the funny side of things even under serious circumstances. Another incident that comes to mind is of this maid we had, whose husband would drink and beat her every day. After one such episode, when my maid was showing my Mum the bruises her husband had inflicted on her the previous night in a drunken state, my Mum pulled a 500 rupee note out of her purse and gave it to my maid. When my maid enquired what it was for, she asked her buy herself some alcohol, get drunk that evening and give her husband a taste of his own medicine. The next morning my Mum was up early waiting for my maid eagerly to hear all the sordid details. Whether that piece of advice was acted upon or not is a different story, but the incredulous look on my maid’s face was priceless.
What I admired the most… Her tenacity and never say die spirit. She believed that nothing was impossible if you believe in yourself and trusted God. She had a child like faith in God that was truly inspiring.

She then whispered into Mallika’s ear to have the pillow case changed. My little nephew used to take the mickey out of her by deliberately drinking from her mug and it never ceased to spark a healthy debate between the two, much to everyone’s amusement. My relationship with my mum was perfect. As with all relationships, my Mum and I had our ups and downs, during my growing years, but we had this perfect understanding of each other’s feelings and sentiments that only strengthened our bond. It has been 5 years since my Mum passed away, but I know that she is with me in spirit and this gives me the courage and guidance I need to take on the challenges that come my way. The one word that springs to mind when I think of my Mum is - Positive! My Mum’s blood group was B+ and so is that of my brothers and myself. My Mum would very proudly tell my Dad quite often that we were all her true children - positive to the core! Her whole philosophy and positive approach to life was exemplified by this one statement she often used to make, “When you pray for rain make sure you have an umbrella at hand”.

How to make Spicy Breaded Chicken Wings: • Mix the bread crumbs, onion powder, basil, cayenne, garlic salt and paprika in a bowl. • In another bowl, beat in the egg and water. • Slice the chicken wing into three slices and discard the wing tips. • Dip the chicken wings in the egg mixture to coat it evenly. • Now coat the wings in the crumb mixture. • Grease a baking pan and heat the oven to 425 degrees. • Bake for 30 minutes, while turning it every 10 minutes. • Combine the dipping ingredients and serve.

o begin with, the paint of any interior - curtains. Long light colored, plain or striped cotton fits the best for showdown with the scorching heat. Roman blinds are more economic and do justice for the traditional look. For those who have recess windows, they can take a break from the usual fabric and try linen and muslin cloth with bright colors, but the wall complementing with a lighter backdrop. Plain voile behind cotton or linen curtains are the best treats for bay windows, which look less stuffy. You didn’t have a single release last year. Was that a conscious decision? No, if I could have my way, I would have a release every month. Tera Kya Hoga Johnny was supposed to release but it didn’t; and accident with Shiney also ran into trouble. The release dates are not in my hand. If I don’t have work I start panicking.
You did a film called Life Goes On with your mother Sharmila Tagore so were there any personal shades in your role? In the film, during a scene with my mom I give her some shocking information – it is something I would never be able to replicate in real life. She would be disappointed and angry – I would turn into jelly. My mom can be very strict and severe when she wants to be. There was also a moment in the film where I wear her clothes after she dies in the film. In morbid moments we visualize a situation when our loved ones will be no more – the film brought

that moment to life because of mom’s cremation scene. I was very disturbed. Even now, when I see the film, I’m always in tears.
What was going through your mind when you were enacting your role in Life Goes On? While doing all this, I would keep in mind that she was having dinner with Brad Pitt at the Cannes Film Festival.
From the time you entered Bollywood, you have been compared to your star mom, Sharmila Tagore. Does it bring out the competitive spirit in you? My mom is far more beautiful, experienced and talented an actress than I am. If I am compared to my mother, I would want her to win hands down. For me, there is not even the start of a competition. I’m competing with my peers for good roles.
I believe your mom wanted you to study more? She wanted me to go to Oxford, which I did. She wanted me to

Your life changes when you lose an entire generation, I never saw my paternal grandfather, he passed away when he was very young.
What do you like about shooting in London? We shot in Central London near Hyde Park. St. James Park is my favourite park --- it’s a small park with a pond and lots of ducks and geese. It looks lovely when the flowers bloom. What I love the most about London is that despite being a huge bustling city, it still has a lot of greenery and you can go for long walks. Also there’s great food and it’s an excellent place for shopping. do my Masters, which I did, also because I wanted to. I think she now wants me to do a PhD. She feels that I am academically inclined, intelligent and have very good research skills. That’s why she is pushing me. ,” I’m very much into word games. You have two actors in the family. Any plans of doing a film with your mother Sharmila and brother Saif? I would love to work with them but the script has to be right. We don’t want it to appear gimmicky. If some genuinely good script with roles for all of us comes along, then why not.
If you were the Chief of the Censor Board instead of your mother, Sharmila Tagore, what change would you have done? I actually am very happy as an actor that we have a sensible Chief of the Censor Board who is not politically aligned and who is broadminded and wise. She understands cinema and also has experience as a mother and as a housemaker. I think she is the apt for the role. If I would have been at her place, I would definitely have kept calling her for advice every time I would see a film.
Considering she has almost half a-century of film experience behind her, does your mother have any plans of directing you some days? She makes these plans everyday.

Is your mom critical about your work? Yes, she is. And I want her to be so. As an actor, she has so much wisdom in her. She looks at my clothes and my hairstyles. She now feels that she should not be critical as I have to choose my own way ahead.
In your film Life Goes On, you play a girl who grows close to her father after her mother’s death. How close are you to your father in real life? We are very close to each other, as we have the same temperament. I have seen myself growing into him. I think I will become like him when I grow older, which will be very cool. He loves us very much, though it was mom who took all the decisions concerning us – What will be our curfew? Could we stay over at a friend’s place? or Can I get my arms waxed? When mom was out, he would have no clue about our questions, so he would say ‘Call your mom and ask her’.
The film also sees you sharing the same frame with your mother, Sharmila Tagore? Filming with her was very special because when we were shooting, she said this was her last film and she will be retiring. But she has been saying this for the last 20 years. Now I realize that she was not telling the truth, as she has already done three films more. I had always thought of having one film common to both our filmographies and this film in particular is very touching. The way she has been presented and the way the mother-daughter dynamic has been presented are very special. It will be wonderful to have that on my DVD collection; I will look at it for years to come.
Tell us about the other two films you are working on - Chemistry and Soundtrack? Chemistry is a romantic comedy, a first for me. Soundtrack is a drama about a DJ who loses his hearing and a deaf girl (played by me) who makes him aware that life can still go along. As told to Gautam

Wedding Cake The wedding cake had a strong British floral theme, using elements of the Joseph Lambeth technique. It was a multi-tiered traditional fruit cake decorated with cream and white icing. The Lambeth technique is based on a style of decorating that was popular in England where chefs and decorators would use a lot of intricate piping to create 3-D scrollwork, leaves, flowers and other decoration. The summer sweat does not stop us from being all excited to binge on the ‘King of Fruits’. The name itself describes a trait of the fruit, which is none other than the - Mango. Add an adjective after ‘Mangoes’ and it makes a whole new sentence- ‘Man- goes crazy’ and definitely they make everyone go crazy.

am sure that most of us tried plucking mangoes and run so we would not be caught by the owner of the yard and relished every bite of it, head back home after the days play and gorge on plate of mangoes and fight with our siblings over who got a bigger share. It is one of the oldest cultivated trees with writings which prove that dating back to 4000 years. There are a thousand varieties of mangoes all round the world. India alone produces over seventy varieties of mangoes, the best reason for it to be India’s National Fruit. The Mango has a very extended family - Benishaan, Himayat, Chausa, Banganapalli, Tota puri, Kesar, Dashehari, Alphonso being a few of its Indian brothers. Summer cannot pass without being kid and binge on the yummy Rasal. The mango tree and the fruit have both been a part of the great Indian festivities from the ancient days. In Hinduism, the perfectly ripe mango is often held by Lord Ganesha, as a symbol of attainment, regarding the devotees’ potential perfection. The Mango leaves are exclaimed to be sacred and are used to decorate the doors during festivals and Mandaps during weddings. The Mango wood is used to make window frames, rafters, furniture, canoes, jewellery and vases. The oil from the kernel inside the mango seed is used to make soaps. This is one tree that is useful from the fruits to the roots. Every nook and corner of the country has a dish dedicated to the ‘King of Fruits’. Raw form of

Mango is used in various preparations traditional to exotic. Ugadi is one such festival that seems to celebrate the arrival of the Mango. This festival offers an indulgence in the fruit with mango rice, mango gravy mixed with plain rice, mango dal - pieces of raw mango are added to Dal, Aam Panna - (raw mango juice,) mango pickle are definitely one of the most awaited pickles of the season. When nannies are all set to make pickles and the air is filled with the aroma of freshly ground spices. One cannot resist the smell of freshly mixed Aavakaya pickle. It is a fruit that is relished by all age groups. Murabba or Jam which is made of raw mango is a combination of mango pieces and the sweetness of jaggery. Mangos can be combined with almost everything from desserts to cakes. Sixth International Mango Symposium at Thailand clearly indicate that mango industry is not confined to few pockets of the world rather the countries like Australia and Israel, where its commercial cultivation started few decades back, have made significant achievements and is now million dollar earning industry for them. More than 20 million metric tons of mangoes are produced throughout tropical and subtropical world. The leading producer is India, with very little export. Based an FAO reports, Mexico rank first in export and is at second place in production. Apart from fresh fruits, market for mango juice is also growing well. India is the biggest player in the market.

Mangoes are not only known for their exotic sweetness and juicy quality, but are also known for their many health blessings. It helps in the formation and sustenance of healthy teeth, good vision, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes and skin. Mangoes are used as blood builders because of their high iron content. They are suggested for treatment of anemia and are beneficial to women during pregnancy and menstruation. People who are suffering from muscle cramps, stress and heart problems can benefit from the high potassium and magnesium content that also helps those with acidosis.

Friendly Cockatoos Species: There are many species of cockatoos, but the most common species seen in captivity (in no particular order) include the Moluccan, Goffin’s, umbrella, sulfur crested (greater and lesser), and bare eyed cockatoos.
Size: Range in size from about 12 inches to about 27 inches. Those on the smaller size include Goffin’s cockatoo and the lesser sulfur crested cockatoo, while the larger cockatoos included the umbrella, Moluccan and greater sulfur crested cockatoos.
Expected Life Span: With proper care, cockatoos can be expected to live from about 40 years (smaller species) to 80 years or more (larger species). Unfortunately, many in captivity die younger than this.
Temperament: Cockatoos are very lively and affectionate birds. They are quite “cuddly” and bond very closely with their owners. However, their sociability and need for affection means they demand a great deal of time from their owners. Deprived of affection, cockatoos will become depressed or exhibit neurotic behaviors. They are intelligent, playful, mischevious, and they can be exceptionally loud. They are somewhat excitable so sometimes don’t do that well around young kids.

Softwood toys, tree branches, vegetable tanned leather, rope toys (supervise use), bells and cardboard can all be given. Provide both hanging toys and toys that can be picked up in the feet. Toys with hanging strands simulate preening and are popular with cockatoos. All toys must be safe, and hung safely
Feeding: Cockatoos need a variety of fresh foods along with a good quality avian pellet based diet. Pellets can be up to 50% of the diet and fresh foods (vegetables, fruits, grains, etc) you prepare should make up the rest. In fact, Rajni suddenly felt self- contempt, to demand things she knows she can never afford to have? How can she upset her poor mother who strives so hard to make her happy? DIFFICULTY IN SLEEPING In the early months your body is adjusting to pregnancy and during the last few months, your increased size and the baby’s kicking cause difficulty in sleeping. • Exercise daily. Take warm, relaxing bath and drink warm milk before going to bed. • Avoid eating a heavy meal before two hours of going to bed. • Lie on your side placing several pillows between your knees. • Avoid products that contain caffeine as they may keep you awake and are also harmful for your baby. • Plan for naps and short rest periods during the day. Prepare a proper sleeping schedule. And if you cannot sleep then don’t worry, these wakefulness maybe your body’s way of preparing you for the upcoming changes in your life.
HEARTBURN FATIGUE Fatigue is your body’s way of telling you that you need extra rest and this is no alarming situation during pregnancy. • If you are working, take up rest breaks instead of coffee breaks as caffeine and other stimulants may increase fatigue and be harmful. • Be sure to consume enough calories, Iron and Folic Acid.
HEADACHE
Pregnant women may get heartburn because the stomach muscles relax and food tends to back up. Sometimes the stomach makes more acid during pregnancy. The growing baby pressing against the stomach can force acid upward causing heartburn. • Avoid grease, fried or seasonal foods, as they may produce heart burns. • Wear clothing that is loose around your waist.
Increment in blood volume and hormonal changes in pregnancy leading to stuffy nose, fatigue, eye strain, anxiety or tension leads to frequent headache.
• Do not lie down right after eating. When you do lie down to sleep or rest, use pillows to slightly raise your head.
• Apply a cool, wet wash cloth or ice pack to your forehead and back of your neck. But warm cloth also works better for some people.
• Avoid acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, red peppers and chocolate.
• The best remedy for headache is lots of sleep. Try a massage, drink plenty of liquids and take a warm shower. Next day it is going to be fine.

• To reduce heartburn, try the “flying exercise”. While standing, raise and lower your arms quickly, bringing the backs of your hands together over your head. Repeat several times. To help coat your stomach and Eusophagus, try sipping water, milk, carbonated water or papaya juice. You can also try eating 1/2 tablespoon of yogurt, heavy cream, or a small dish of vanilla ice cream. Drink plenty of liquids, especially water (eight to ten, 8-ounce glasses daily).

MUSCLE CRAMPS Muscle cramps usually occur due to calcium imbalance and decreased circulation in body • Take lot of calcium in your diet by feeding on dairy products like milk or non dairy products like tofu, molasses and dark-green leafy vegetables such as broccoli or boy choy, okra and blackstrap. • Exercise to increase blood circulation in your legs. Elevate your legs and a warm bath before bed. • Take care not to point your toes when you stretch. Instead flex your feet by pulling them towards your knees. • Avoid lying on your back as this can decrease the circulation to your legs. • Loosen the bedding at the foot of your beg. Before going to bed, stretch your calf muscles. NOTE – During a leg cramp, simple exercises which include ice pack massage, slow walking, soaking of cramped muscles in warm water are better solutions than medications during pregnancy.
NAUSEA AND VOMITING Nausea occurs early in pregnancy and usually goes away after the third month. It can happen in any time of the day or night and there are different remedies to help different women. • A piece of bread before getting up your bed in the morning or whenever you feel nauseous can help. • Avoid sudden movements and eat small meals several times during the day so your stomach does not remain empty for long periods of time. • Take meals rich in high-protein and complex carbohydrate, fruit and fruit juices. This prevents low blood sugar levels. Avoid oily and fried food stuff. • Drink soup and other liquids between meals rather with meals. • Drink herbal teas such as ginger, spearmint, peppermint or raspberry leaf. • Motion bands on wrists help reduce nausea during pregnancy.
MOOD SWINGS Being pregnant can lead to many conflicting emotions and mood changes. Many women are subject to sudden outbursts of emotion that can be caused by several factors, including fatigue, stress and hormonal changes. Talk over your feelings and concerns with your partner or another trusted person. Consider joining or starting a pregnancy support group. Continue with activities that you enjoy. This is a great time for you and your partner to spend time together before the baby arrives. Take time to pamper yourself. Hair and nails often grow quickly during pregnancy. Experiment with a new haircut and have a manicure. Exercise on a regular basis. You may find prenatal exercise classes to be a valuable source of support from other pregnant mothers. Avoid becoming overly tired. Take naps on a regular basis whenever possible. Even a 15-minute rest break can help. Be sure your diet is healthy and that you have enough protein and iron every day. Attend classes, read books, and watch videos on various aspects of pregnancy, childbirth preparation and newborn care. Knowing what to expect will help ease tension.
OTHER CONCERNS • Swollen nasal membranes usually cause nose bleeds during pregnancy. At this point, lie down and apply pressure with cold compresses. Also try a thin coating of petroleum jelly on each nostril. • Growing uterus puts pressure on the internal organs and diaphragm leaving less room for your lungs to expand and leads to shortness of breath. Hold your arms above your head and breathe slowly. This raises your rib cage giving a temporary breathing space.
