EDITOR’S NOTE

Dear Readers, “It is impossible, as impossible as to raise the dead, to restore anything that has ever been great or beautiful in architecture. That which I have... insisted upon as the life of the whole, that spirit which is given only by the hand and eye of the workman, can never be recalled”, said the great John Ruskin. And this is what we want to illustrate through this issue. What may take ages and ages to build, takes only a second to take down. Architecture, apart from folk tales is just a few ways left in our constantly changing world, to stop for a second and look back at history. To look back at what makes us who we are. This issue we focus on the heritage of our city. We look at the architecture, the food, culture and everything under the sun which gives our city its rich heritage. Our cover story deals with the architecture of the city, we have a special feature on the food of Hyderabad and also vintage special automobiles section. Heritage is truly thing which is once lost, cannot be regained. As we whiz past another decade in the 21st century, it’s a good time to go back to history and find ourselves there. Find little snippets and minutiae which give us our identities. I wish all the readers of our magazine a very happy and prosperous Eid and keeping with the spirit of the festival, our tinsel town section contains some of the best Iftar dos of the past fortnight. With Iftar parties aplenty, our team has worked hard to get you the best of the dos out there. Apart from the usual festivities, it’s a special time for us at TULIP as this would be the 10th edition of the magazine. I take this opportunity to thank our readers, who have made TULIP a household name in a matter of months. A hearty thanks to everyone involved in bringing out the magazine and wishing many more milestones for TULIP magazine. GOES TO...

O

Once every year, Hollywood’s television stars reign over their film counterparts. Sunday was that day as the Primetime 62nd annual Emmy Awards, held in Los Angeles, saw both usual suspects and surprise winners walk away with the honors. Drama series Mad Men kept its crown as the best drama series, while comedy show Modern Family dethroned 30 Rock to emerge best in the genre. India made its presence felt at the ceremony, too, as British actor of Indian origin Archie Panjabi, who starred in Bend it like Beckham, bagged the award for the best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in The Good Wife. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was named as best variety series for the eighth year in a row while Top Chef, hosted by former model Padma Lakshmi, won in the reality TV category over seven-time winner The Amazing Race.

A NEW AVATAR

A

Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron’s re-release of sci-fi epic movie Avatar has been reported a flop at the US box office at the weekend. Cameron’s 3-D special edition of Avatar, which included an extra nine minutes of footage, failed to draw cinemagoers in droves as it did last year. People still turned out to see “Avatar” but they weren’t in such impressive numbers as to generate this kind of grossing. Still, the $4 million in sales helped it go past $750 million domestically. In this light, “Avatar” was a flop because it failed to rise to expectations and perform as solidly as it had in the past. On the other hand, one can’t simply ignore the fact that this movie has been out and making good money since what feels like forever.

Katy made her television debut with the current season of ‘The X Factor’, where she shares the dais with music mogul Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. ‘Katy loved every minute of it and is very interested in expanding her TV experience. She loves meeting new people and because Russell is from England, she wants to make an especially good impression,’ said the source. The singer is also lending her voice for an upcoming movie ‘The Smurfs’. 6 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

AC Milan snapped up Manchester City’s Brazilian forward Robinho, the latest piece in a jigsaw which the Rossoneri hope will bring them the Serie A title. The 26-year-old Robinho joined City from Real Madrid in 2008 in a big-money deal but never really settled in the Premier League and spent the second half of last season on loan at former club Santos. I want to make history with this club. I will give so much happiness to my fans,” Robinho told Milan’s official website. The tricky player will struggle to hold down a first team place with new Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri saying he expects to play a forward trident of Ibrahimovic with Brazilians Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato.

DARPAN DARPAN A Reflection of Dreams

When it comes to furnishing a home or work place, Darpan Furnishing has helped create the right place with all the details that covert empty space into a cozy, comfortable and elegant space. Darpan does not sell curtains, it sells dreams. People don’t tell you how to decorate a room; they tell you a story and theme of the room. Visiting Darpan is no ordinary visit to a furnishing store, it’s a surreal experience. So let’s break on through the other side….

L

ocated in the heart of the city, Darpan was established in 2000 by Mr.Suleman Hirani, who is the CEO of the company. A lively and enthusiastic man, Mr.Suleman gets to work as soon as he comes inside the store, talking to customers, staff and getting involved. Things have been going swiftly, as the store was renovated a couple months back, in an ultra modern and international design. When asked why he chose the name Darpan, Mr.Suleman explains, “Darpan

means reflection of dreams, and that’s what we want to sell. We want to sell dreams, not fabrics. Back in the days, curtains were used to hide things; it’s not the case now. Now people want to show things and we help people with that.”

As we get up and take a walk across the store, Mr.Suleman fills me in with some interesting details. Everything is made easy for the customer. “Customers buy curtains and other items once every five years. So it’s not easy for them to decide what color, texture they want. SO what we have done is created themes, in which we merge curtain, upholstery and wallpaper samples. This makes it easy for the customer to make the decision.” The ground floor is replete with curtains, wallpapers, rugs and even headboards, available in leather, fabric and velvet. The special attractions here are automatic rolling curtains which can be controlled by a remote control from as far as 50 feet. As we move to the first floor, we find curtain rods from the best of the best and I ask what makes Darpan so special. 18 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

Mr. Suleman Hirani

SHOPAHOLIC Mr.Suleman says, “We believe in providing value for money, just like the RBI promises to pay the bearer 100 rupees on a 100 rupee note. It’s the same thing. We don’t want to charge 100 rupees and provide value for 80. At the same time, we don’t compromise on quality of the product. And this is why we have been able to create a niche for ourselves, and that is why our loyal clientele haven’t left us and we keep getting new ones like furnishing top end hotels, hospitals and corporate.” The brand is so popular that more than 150 dealers across the city showcase their samples. These specialized samples are trademarked and Mr.Suleman challenges us that if we go to any furniture store, we will find their sample. The most amazing thing about the staff here is that they don’t angle for a sale. The well trained, dedicated staff is divided into different teams. There are dedicated teams for handling retail, furniture, interiors and corporate. A look behind the desk of Mr.Suleman, and I notice lots of awards and plaques. An inquiry leads Mr.Suleman to confess. “We

have won awards from Kurl-On and Sleepwell for selling the highest number of mattresses in the city. Apart from this, we have a tie-up with five major mattress companies for different needs of the customer.”

Presence of good brands, personalized service, professional staff makes Darpan a must visit for people looking to furnish their homes. SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010 TULIP 19

COVER STORY

YDERABAD Kingdom of Heaven

By Mohammed Abdul

Hyderabad, known as the eternal city of love, art, and history, all flourishing together in perfect harmony making it one of the most enchanting places in the world. Our city’s warm hospitality, impressive monuments, art and architectural richness, makes it a time warp which captures its glorious past and its promising future. A unique blend of the old dominion and rustic charm within

the trappings of new age modernity, its mysterious name brings visions of royal grandeur and leisurely “Nawabi” atmosphere. This legendary city of ours with a 400-year-old rich history, of the splendor of Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi dynasties, Moghal grandeur, exotic cuisine, and exquisite markets, has become famous for its mesmerizing contrasts and unrivalled attractions.

A BRIEF HISTORY

after India gained independence, Hyderabad State merged with the Union of India. On November 1, 1956 the map of India was redrawn into linguistic states, and Hyderabad became the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad is the fifth largest city in India with an ancient civilization and culture. Attached to the city is its twin, Secunderbad, which is part of Hyderabad. The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderbad are separated by the Husain Sagar, an artificial lake constructed during the time of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah Wali in 1562 A.D. Our city is noted for its natural beauty, mosques and minarets, bazaars and bridges, hills and lakes. Perched on the top of the Deccan Plateau, 1776ft., above sea level, it sprawls over an area of 100 sq. miles. A multitude of influences have shaped the character of this city. Its palaces and buildings, houses and tenements, gardens and streets have a unique history and an architectural individuality of their own, which makes Hyderabad a city of enchantment.

RULE OF THE NIZAMS

During the Asif Jahi period, Persian, Urdu, Telegu and Marathi developed simultaneously. The highest official positions were given to deserving persons irrespective of their religion. Persian was the official language up to 1893 and then Urdu up to 1948. The rule of the seven Nizam’s saw the growth of Hyderabad both culturally and economically. Huge reservoirs, like the Nizam Sagar, Tungabadra, Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar, and others were built. Hyderabad, under the Nizam’s, was the largest princely state in India. Area wise it was as big as England and Scotland put together. The State had its own currency, mint, railways, and postal system. There was no income tax. Soon 20 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

CULTURE TIDBITS • Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah (1580-1612) the son of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah ascended the throne at the age of 15. The famous Charminar, Char Kaman, Badshahi AshurKhana, Jame-Masjid, Daru-Shifa were built during his reign. • Sherwani was adopted as the court dress of Hyderabad during Nizam VI’s time. It is a long coat extending below the knees worn with a loose pyjama or churidar. It remains a popular dress even today. • The city is famous for its Pearl industry and these pearls are exported to various parts of the world. • Gun Foundry located opposite the Mahboobia Girls School was one of the several cannon and cannonball factories set up in 1786 by the French General Monsieur Raymond. This is the only existing gun-foundry today as the rest were dismantled. • Lad Bazar - is one of the oldest shopping centres of Hyderabad. Noted for the sale of traditional bridal wares such as bangles, textiles, cosmetics, this shopping centre attracts many tourists. • Hyderabad was the only state in India where the ruler was allowed to print the currency notes. This 100 rupee note was introduced in 1918.

COVER STORY There is no better testimony for the heritage of our city than the monuments strewn across the city. The monuments of Hyderabad are an absolute delight to visit. One will be amazed at the rich and interesting history of each monument. Not only are they historically significant, they are also outstanding examples of ancient architecture still withstanding the tests of time. Hyderabad like the rest of Deccan was ruled by several dynasties in the past. Some of these empires have left their impressions in the form of landmark buildings and forts. The monuments found in Hyderabad are nothing but the

remnants left by them. Although not many are present in the centre of the city, but the ones that are present are really incredible. These monuments have survived the ravages of time and the onslaughts made by catastrophic forces of nature. The city used to be bounded by stone walls and there were regular gates providing the entry. Most of these gates and the walls have been taken down by floods. We give you a quick peek at the some of the famous monuments of the city. If you haven’t seen most of these, then shame on you. Put it on the list of things to do for this weekend.

CHARMINAR The elegant structure of the Charminar is a vivid example of Cazia style of architecture comprising of granite and lime-mortar. Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah built this Islamic architectural splendor in the year 1591. The wonderful monument with its four arches is planned to such perfection that when the fort is opened one can catch a glimpse of the bustling city as these arches once faced the royal ancestral streets. The monument has the signature style of Islamic architecture and has come to be a symbol synonymous with the city.

GOLCONDA FORT This fort, originally built by the Kakatiyas, was made with mud. Later, the Shahis converted it into a marvelous piece of architecture using advanced acoustics wherein sound signals could pass from the entrance of the fort to the top without the use of any electric gadgets. The grand fortress is protected by three formidable lines of defense. The first, an outer fortification made up of granite blocks. The middle wall surrounds the base of the hill and the innermost one follows the contours of the highest ridge. The fort was famous for its great hoard of diamonds, mined nearby.

FALAKNUMA PALACE Situated on a hillock 2000 ft above the ground level, Falaknuma palace is one among the most opulent palaces in Hyderabad. It was built in the year 1872 by Nawab Vikarul-Umra Bahadur, a baron of Paigah and the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. A huge amount of money was spent for the interior decoration, with tooled leather ceilings created by Florentine craftsman, furniture brought from France and marble imported from Italy. The palace offers a panoramic view of the city and boasts a well laid garden in front of it. The imperial building is built in a classical style with a two-storeyed deep and colonnaded verandah carrying a pediment. The facade elements are notably European as the main palace was designed by English architects. SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010 TULIP 21

COVER STORY LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Formerly known as the Hyderabad Town hall, the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly is the seat of administration in the state. Built in the year 1913, the architecture of the building represents a fusion of Rajasthani and Persian styles, with an all white, aesthetic look. The Citizens of Princely state of Hyderabad raised money to build it to mark the 40th birthday of Nizam Mahboob Ali Khan in 1905. A large public garden surrounds the assembly building which offers panorama to the environment. A massive statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a sitting posture is erected at the entrance park to the Assembly.

QUTB SHAHI TOMBS The Hyderabad Palace is a monument situated at Palace Guttahalli in Hyderabad. It was built by Chamaraja Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore in 1887. The Palace has turreted parapets, battlements, fortified towers and arches. The king Chamaraja Wodeyar, during his visit to England had seen several structures of architectural importance but was greatly inspired by the Windsor Castle in London; hence he decided to build a palace in Tudor style. The entire palace is spread over an area of about 430 acres; the Palace is famous for its elegantly carved woodwork. It is surrounded by a garden all around, almost giving it a fairytale setting. The structure has fortified towers decorated with Gothic windows, battlements and turrets. Thanks to the king for his endeavor in bringing such a beautiful palace.

PAIGAH TOMBS The Paigah Tombs are the tombs of the several generations of the Paigah nobles. The Paigah nobles were very close to the Nizams and so they enjoyed a significant social status. Some of the Paigah nobles who have been laid to rest here are Asman Jah, Viqar-ul-Umara and Shams-ul-Umara. Tegh Jung was buried in 1786 at the foyer of the complex. An iron plaque at the entrance of the complex traces the Paigah lineage and exalts the marble magnificence of the vault. The Paigah Tombs are unique specimens of extraordinary artistry that is ardently visible in the wonderfully inlaid mosaic work.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS SALARJUNG MUSEUM

A collection of art objects by Nawab Salar Jung III, this museum houses magnificent exhibits of European and Indian paintings and statuary. Of special interest is the Jade Room containing priceless objects which belonged to ancient Indian rulers like Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan.

BIRLA MANDIR

Overlooking the Tank Bund, the Birla Mandir presents an arresting sight when illuminated in the evening. This magnificent structure built entirely out of marble from Rajasthan, stands atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. Built by a Birla Foundation over a span of ten years, the main temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara.

TANK BUND

Hyderabad’s most popular promenade, the Tank Bund dams the Hussain Sagar Lake. It is lined with 33 statues of famous personalities of the state. Installed at the centre of the lake is a monolith of Buddha. This lake is the venue for many water sport events. 22 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

‘SLOW’ FOOD ‘SLOW’ FOOD

By Mohammed Abdul

There is a saying in Hyderabad, cooking patiently or ithmenaan se is the key; slowcooking is the hallmark of Hyderabadi cuisine. . Sometimes simple aids like slow cooking and dum help produce rich flavors. And that’s the thing which makes Hyderabadi cuisine so special, its lazy elegance and its leisurely feel. Hyderabadi cuisine – slightly sour, hot and richly endowed with nuts and assorted spices and cooked in asli ghee – has to be enjoyed to be believed The affluent and leisured aristocracy of the erstwhile Nizam State as well as the long peaceful years of their dominance, contributed largely to the development of and devotion to, the culinary art. Cuisine of Hyderabad has been influenced by various regional and religious cuisines, both Indian and foreign, despite which it has been able to create an identity of its own. It has also been able to contribute towards making Indian cuisine popular worldwide. Mealtime in a Hyderabadi home was not just a routine but a ritual, a time for celebration. A meal was the grand finale of a concerted taste to the well out spread of the day. No guest could leave a Hyderabadi home without sharing a meal with the family.

In the past, the food was called Ghizaayat. The cuisine is linked to the nobles, who religiously maintained the authenticity of the past, and the recipes are a closelyguarded secret. The royal cooks were known as Khansamas. They were highly regarded by the nobles. Shahi Dastarkhan was the dining place, where food was served and eaten. A chowki is a low table, instead of a dining table and cotton mattresses for squatting and bolsters for the back rest. Some of the salient features of Hyderabadi food are the key flavors of coconut, tamarind, peanuts and sesame seeds. On formal occasions, the food is garnished with warq (a very fine, pure silver leaf created by prolonged hammering and flattening of a small piece of silver). The key spice is chilly, which is used in abundance and is the reason for the sobriquet Dynamite Food. The Biryani from this cuisine is one such example. It is the aromatic long grained basmati rice cooked with mutton or chicken pieces. These meat pieces add a flavor of their own to the preparation. Besides these facts, the story of the origin of Biryani gets a little fuzzy with legends. According to the legend, Mumtaz Mahal (the beauty who sleeps in Taj Mahal) concocted this dish as a “complete meal” to feed the army. Yet, some say the dish really originated in West Asia. The nomads would bury an earthen pot full of meat, rice and spices in a pit, eventually the pot was dug up and there was the Biryani. What makes the Hyderabadi Cuisine special is the use of special ingredients, carefully chosen and cooked to the right degree. The addition of a certain Herb, Spice, Condiment, or an Amalgam of these adds a unique taste and texture to the dish. The herbs and spices used and the method of preparation gives the dish its name. Murgh do pyaza gets its name from the onions that are added twice to the dish in two variations. The Masalas or the rich blend of herbs, spices and condiments give the dishes a base, or what is popularly known as Gravy. The head cooks or the Khansas were an asset to the house hold, and were treated with due respect. The word Nawabi is as synonymous with the Hyderabadi cuisine as Shahi is with Lucknowi. These terms conjure delicacies that are rich in taste and texture with mouth-watering aromas. The Kebabs in Hyderabad are worth special mention; the Shammi Kebab is one such popular dish. The kebabs are barbecued meat, hot and succulent, they are irresistible in taste. The Kebabs are originally from Greece!! The Hyderabadi meal is never complete without the bread from the kilns of the local bakers. The breads from this cuisine are equally popular, be it rich Sheermal or lukmi (bread stuffed with savory mince meat). Bread is not only an accompaniment to the meal but also forms a base for a popular sweet dish Double Ka Meetha. 24 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

EXCLUSIVE For vegetarians, the prominent mouthwatering vegetarian dishes of Hyderabad are “Dahi Vadas” (lentil dumplings in Yogurt), “Mirch-ka-Salan” (chilies in a cream gravy), and the more common “Bagara Baigan”. The Dahi Vada essentially contains spicy and creamy curd in which round pieces of ground lentils have been immersed after being fried. The mirch-ka-sabu is a delicious vegetarian dish of Hyderabad consisting of hot chilies, which are immersed in cream gravy. On the dessert menu, Hyderabad is famous for Double-ka-Meetha (a bread and cashew nut pudding), Badam-ki-Jhab (marzipan), and Dil-e-Firdaus (rich milk based sweet). Thank the stars the cable culture cannot alter the yearnings of the palate! And of course the any-time favorite with all Hyderabadis – Irani chai cannot be ignored! This purely Irani tradition of drinking chai is a spillover from Irani trade in the 1600s. Street-side ‘Irani Cafes are most popular for its typical refreshing Irani Chai that one would love to have at the first opportunity given. Hyderabadi haleem is a type of meat stew of Hyderabad. It is a popular dish during the Muslim month of Ramadan. The cooking of haleem in Hyderabad is mastered to an art form, like the popular Hyderabadi biryani. It is a type of stew made from pounded wheat and mutton (or beef) made into a thick paste. It is the mainstay during the Holy month of Ramadan. It is a tradition to break the daily fast (roza) at Iftar with a plateful of haleem. Haleem is the traditional starter at Muslim weddings, celebrations and other special occasions. Hotel Mercure at Abids serves up an amazing vegetarian haleem. Made with capsicum, brown onions, green peas and a dozen other ingredients, this vegetarian haleem is an absolute treat. The head chef at the restaurant, Mr.Nilesh had this to say, “We wanted people to taste authentic and 100% vegetarian haleem. A lot of other places just say that they are vegetarian, but we actually make sure that everything we prepare is completely vegetarian. The reason for making haleem is simple, vegans should not be deprived of the amazing taste of haleem. It has become so popular that we have put it on the buffet menu.”

YOUTH POLL

Heritage Of Hyderabad A nation must be embraced, rehabilitated and expressed as a tangible sign of human creativity and as an integral element of mankind’s heritage. We ask youngsters what does the city’s heritage mean to them? What can be regarded as our city’s heritage? Do they think we are forgetting our culture? MITIKA PAREKH Hyderabad is different from rest of the Andhra Pradesh mainly for its diversity and the roots of its culture which has come from the Nizams, who were the heirs of our city and Salarjung museum canvasses the Nizam’s lifestyle and its shadow in our daily life. This is evident in the rich food, the monuments and the people who reside in our city.

ASHWIN BALAKRISHNAN Hyderabad’s legacy as a Nawabi city has given us three major contributions: rich food, an appreciation of the arts, and a laid-back atmosphere. The biryani, haleem, and kebabs you get in Hyderabad are both cultural icons and local delicacies. The city also has no shortage of museums, galleries, and architecture; Last but not least, everybody in this city has a very chilled and mellow attitude. There’s no rush to get things done, no urgency, no haste; while this doesn’t always turn out the best results professionally, enjoying and savouring the amazing food and art the city has to offer rather than hurry up and finish things as quickly as possible.

Crystal Lorraine Misquitta Its still awe inspiring when i go now to those places which have importance in our history. The architecture and charm of those places gives me goose bumps. Well, to be true at a young age I never knew exactly what it was and how valuable it was. During picnics and stuff we just used to see the place hog, have a look at the different structures and listen to the stories my grandparents used to tell.

RITURAJ SAPKOTA I see two cities in Hyderabad- one is the sprawling, glamorous new technical hub with a cosmopolitan culture,a city with no shortage of pubs and bars and hangouts for those who are willing and able to spend. And then there’s the other Hyderabad, the magical one, with a history in every step, an undying sense of being a true Hyderabadi. The Heritage of Hyderabad, to me, is manifested in Irani Chai and Osmania Biscuits, pan shops and chudi bazaar, the tombs and palaces and in the pan-painted, stained and gaali-spitting mouth of every Hyderabadi who walks to a place two and a half hours late, chest held high, feeling proud about being on time.

Hyderabad is a city that has always been close to my heart. It has the perfect blend of cultural heritage and modern outlook. Their Royal Culture, traditions, and beliefs could be seen in the old city, the museums and the forts, on the other hand the High Tech city makes it into a modern and technologically advanced city. The beauty of the city lies in its people, who are intelligent, smart, helpful and down to earth. After living for 4 years in this city, I am proud to call myself as a Hyderabadi.

One of the most sensuous of attire- the saree adorns a woman to become modest and attractive in it. Indian women in different spheres of life admire and appreciate the style and strength of the saree. Though one of the oldest apparels, there is something mystical about the way one wraps, folds, tucks and drapes a seamless piece of cloth: creating a form from the formless. The saree both conceals and reveals, depending on the weaver’s whim and conditioning. The versatile saree has its variety fashion in adorning in this multicultural society of India. THE SAREE STORY Sarees’ origins are obscure, in part because there are so few historical records in India. There are many sculptures of GraecoIndian civilization which show a variety of different saree draping styles. Increasing number of upper class women in the early 20th century did adopt items of European style clothing as the fitted blouse and slim petticoat. Some of the wives of Indian kings draped themselves in sarees that were made by Parisian designers. The concept of beauty in ancient India was that of small waist and large bust and hips, as is evident in the sculptures of those times. And Sari seemed to be the perfect dress to flaunt those proportions as it exposes the waist of a woman and emphasizes the waist and bust with the pleated fabric. Saree is a rectangular piece of unstitched fabric which is draped in a very fascinating manner. The length of this fabric is 6 yards (5 meters) long. This is a one piece of clothing which fits all, fat or thin, short or tall! The traditional 6 yard saree allows for generous pleating, and draping around the body and over the shoulders almost Grecian in style. The loose end of the fabric, which is thrown over the left shoulder, is known as ‘Pallu’. Pallu usually has extensive design or embroidery woven into it. There is a petticoat, or a slip, which is worn under the saree which holds the saree in place. Along with the saree is a blouse, which unattached to it. The blouse is a tight fitting item of clothing, and adds a fashion statement to the saree. Saree is very flattering to all shapes and sizes and forgiving of the various flaws. It can ingeniously conceal the extra flab of fat, or it can accentuate the well proportioned curve -- just a matter of how you drape the saree. Epitome of grace- Aishwarya Rai in a Sabyasachi creation

Iron the cotton, tissue or any starched saree before wearing it and at the time of draping. Press and shape the pleats properly.

If you wear saree to office, you should pin up the saree. You will look very smart and it can be easily managed.

FASHION

Brown or Dark skin color women are for fuller women. Heavy Mysore silk saree makes one look slimmer.

If you choose printed sarees, avoid big prints as they might look too flashy. Go with delicate prints which give a demure look.

Don’t wear a flared petticoat inside.

Thin women should buy Cotton, Tissue, Tussar and Organza sarees. It makes them voluptuous.

Put the pin on the back of the shoulder which keeps the saree together and conceals the pin. Sarees with small or no borders are for shorter women as big borders make one looks shorter.

At a function or an outing, just pin up the saree and let the rest of it be gracefully placed on your hand. Make sure the saree has a beautiful fall.

Hot Tub Time Machine

SYNOPSIS: Lou (Rob Corddry) is a suicidal, out of control party animal; former rock singer Nick (Craig Robinson) is under his wife’s thumb; Adam (John Cusack) is going through a bitter breakup; his nerdy nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) stays glued to his video-games in the basement. Things are looking grim for Adam, Lou, Nic and Jacob when they decide to drive to a ski resort, which holds great memories from over 20 years ago. But after a crazy night of drinking and madness in the hot tub on their balcony, they wake up to find themselves in 1986. Does this mean they have to relive the pain and angst all over again or is there a chance that they can change the future and find love, confidence and happiness when (and if) they are able to find their way back to 2010.

A weekend to while away and don’t know what to do. Catch up with a movie in your nearest cinema halls. Before you head for a day of fun, butter popcorns and visual treat to those tired eyes, read on our verdict on the latest movies. This time watch Peepli Live says - movie reviewer Hassan Ali

It’s coarse, rowdy and filled with vulgarities, yet Hot Tub Time Machine is genuinely funny, original and dare I say rather endearing, as four down and out friends find themselves flung back to the 80s after a night of disorderly drinking. Not for the prudish or the faint hearted, the film , dishes up a never-ending spiral of misadventures, pranks, running gags and gross-out comedy, but somehow instills an innocent kind of energy. As a consequence, it reads as a fun if twisted escapist comic fantasy, with ample opportunities for guffaws, hilarity and cringes along the way. The film offers a similar, keen observation of human behavior. In the opening scenes, we meet the troubled main characters, all of whom are clearly going through a hard time. Craig Robinson’s Nick is fishing out car keys from a dog’s rear end; Rob Corddry’s Lou is so revved up he is a danger to himself; John Cusack’s Adam is adrift after his terse break-up; his plump, geeky, unsociable nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) is oblivious to everything except his sci-fi inspired world. It is desperation that prompts them to head for the snow to Kodiak Valley, where their favorite 80s ski resort is no longer the hip place they remember. That is, until after the frolic in the eerily lit hot tub that propels them back in time. What color is Michael Jackson they ask a stranger, in a bid to determine what decade it is? There’s a wonderful running gag involving Crispin Glover’s memorable one-armed bell-boy who doubles as an ice-sculptor and another involving the high energy drinks Chernobli (prompting misunderstandings about Russian spies). Hilariously, Jacob (who was conceived around that time) starts to flicker into oblivion, while Nick, Adam and Lou occasionally see glimpses of themselves in the mirror - looking the way they did in the 80s. Much of the fun comes from the surprise elements and there are plenty of surprises. As our friends toss up whether to relive the past (with break-ups, beat-ups and embarrassment involving bodily fluids and orifices) or to embrace chaos and see what happens, we take off our seatbelts and trip happily. The entire cast is excellent and it’s good to see Chevy Chase as the mystical time travel guy. Hot Tub Time Machine promises to be a runaway hit; if you want a laugh, hop into the Tub. 34 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

Vintage Cars

By Mohammed Abdul

At the turn of the last century as automobiles started to appear around the world, The Nizam of Hyderabad was amongst the first few Indians to import automobiles for his use. It is indeed a great pleasure to share one of the most amazing collections in the world, a collection that has remained in the family for more than 100 years. As a part of the efforts of the present Nizam Prince Mukkaramjah and Princess Esra, one of their homes Chowmahalla Palace has been converted into a museum for the public and this collection of cars and carriages will open as a museum display close to the festival of Dussehra this year. The Nizam’s family has owned some exquisite automobiles. Following the tradition of their grandfather Mir Mahbub Ali Khan and their father Mir Osman Ali Khan, Prince Azamjah and Prince Mauzamjah, father and uncle of the present Nizam, ordered some of the most glamorous automobiles ever produced. Here are some pictures of machines that once graced the roads of Hyderabad and are no longer here. Harit in 1936 a significant event took place in Hyderabad wherein the Nizam celebrated 25 years of his rule. Being rather austere he turned down requests for purchase of new cars and apparently reluctantly sanctioned $500 for the refurbishment of the Rolls. It was sent to the Railway garage (am sure they could have done better!) and modifications carried out to give the car a modern appearance. What you see today is in fact a classic reflection of the Nizam’s frugal ways marking a special event in Hyderabad. So there’s a lot of history attached to the modifications to the car and perhaps it makes sense to not undo them. Ali Taqi periodically was assigned the task of visiting Chiraan and firing her up. The car has only 356 miles and the Packard has 7000 odd. The Packard may have come in originally for the Nizam’s use and remained with Mukkaramjah once he took over Princess Esra used it occasionally. The prince used the Buick too. It came in originally for Ali Pasha’s use and passed on to Mukkaramjah when he returned from Europe. The Ford as many have seen was used exclusively by Osman Ali Khan to attend Friday namaz at Public Garden. The garage at Chiraan is such an intimate reflection of what SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010 TULIP 35

The garage at Chiraan is such an intimate reflection of what is dear to the prince. It was setup meticulously with a full range of equipment including a lathe. He spent much of his time at the garages tinkering with machinery. The splendid 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost chassis number 2117 custom built by Barker for the Nizam as a ceremonial coach. On 28 February 1938, a full seven and a half months after the chassis was delivered, thE well-equipped car was finished. On 2 April it was shipped to Bombay aboard the ss “Burdwan”. The car had been ordered from Windovers by His Highness Walashan Himayat Ali Khan Azam Jah Berar, Crown Prince of Hyderabad (21 February 1907 – 9 October 1970). He was the son of the 7th Maharaja but he never took the throne; his son succeeded his grandfather as 8th Maharaja in 1967. Prince Berar also owned 20/25HP

GTK19, a Windovers drophead coupé, and Bentley 4.25 litre B104MR, a Park Ward allweather. His chauffeur of seven years, Krishnawaly, completed the RR School of Instruction course on 24 July 1937, where he would have learned how to look after the Phantom III. After the War Prince Berar was to own Bentley Mark VIs B197AJ (a standard saloon) and B6LJ, a Park Ward drophead coupé. “A most unusual Park Ward all weather body, built for Prince Moazzam Jah. Described by Park Ward as a ‘boat design with concealed head’, it was finished in light blue with polished aluminium wings and a white hood. The side window to the rear door (of the same outline as the front) commenced several inches back from the leading edge of the door, which meant the hood had to descend to the waist molding between the front and rear windows, giving the car a most unconventional appearance with the hood raised”. The Bentley records state this under body type: “Specially converted 4 seater” Body number B296. It was built by Park Ward like this. This body style was known as the ‘Paris Salon Cabriolet’ because it debuted at the famous venue in 1936. Mr. Jourde, a noted French businessman, explorer and friend of Joseph Figoni, ordered the car. Prior to World War II, it was shipped to Mr. Jourde’s estate in India where it made an impression on the local royalty. It was later purchased by Prince de Berae Mukarran Jah. The classic styling of this car is considered a benchmark in prewar coach building. There is a virgin original paint Dodge Kingsway from the royal stables, now in a private collection. Absolutely untouched, barring a Rolls Royce clock added on the dash, as “the Nizam was used to seeing only this clock and no other”.

ART

Playing To The Gallery

By Mohammed Abdul

What do the words Baroque, Cubism, Fauvism and Impressionism meant to an enthusiast? What kind of emotion do names like Monet, Picasso, Warhol generate in an art lover? How would it feel to be surrounded by works of Ravi Verma, M.F.Hussain and Tagore? Would’nt it be amazing? To surround oneself with work purer than the white walls that its palced on and to be lost in this abstract world. Being in an art gallery is an experience bested by few, so let’s take a look at the world of art galleries. The question then is, what exactly is an art gallery and how did it all start? An art gallery symbolizes the many shades of human thought and imagination that it implies much more than a mere collection of paintings. In its technical and aesthetic aspect the gallery shows the treatment of color, form and composition. In its historical aspect we find the true portraits of great men and events of the past; we can observe their habits, their manners, their dress, the architecture of their times, and the religious worship of the period in which they lived. Thus, an art gallery in an instant is a window to our past, present and future. In an age of instant gratification, an art gallery provides you with something unique, the possibility of creating your own interpretation and the prospect of intellectual stimulation. Paintings are the most commonly displayed art objects at art galleries, however, sculpture, decorative arts, furniture, , drawings, pastels, watercolors, prints, artists’ books, photographs, and installation art are also shown from time to time. Although primarily concerned with providing a space to show works of visual art, art galleries are sometimes also used to host other artistic activities, such as performance art, music concerts, or poetry readings. The first art gallery of this world was the Lourve, which was established in Paris, France, in 1793. It was there that, after the French Revolution, the people were finally able to view the royal national treasures. Thus began the practice of allowing common people to view fine art as a part of their education in culture. It is here that the seeds of the “exhibition” of art were sewn, as art would finally not be the property of the elite and the affluent, it would soon make its way into the realm of popular culture. No wonder Louvre has such history behind it, and the small fact that it is host to the most popular Da Vinci creation ever, “Mona Lisa”. Some of the great museums of the world include the Louvre, Metropolitan Museum, and MoMA, Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum, Atlanta: High Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago,

Edinburgh: National Gallery of Scotland, London: National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, British Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Museo del Prado in Madrid, and in New York The Guggenheim, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. India has not been lagging behind in the art department with its share of Raja Ravi Vermas, Amrita Shergills and Jamini Roys. Though in the days of these artists, there existed very few gallerys and thus artists were sometimes forced to showcase their talents at galleries museums across the seas. Some of the famous art galleries across the country are the government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh, Prince of Wales Museum Mumbai, Chitralaya Centre Kolkata and the National Museum of Modern Art, New Delhi. Hyderabad has its share of artists and art enthusiasts who have started art galleries. The common link between all the proprietors of these galleries is the passion they share for art. And this passion is not really restricted to paintings as such; the owners seem to be appreciative of different forms of art and expression. The art galleries in the city not only showcase work of reputed and famous artists, but they also make it a point to offer avenues to budding and upcoming artists from different colleges and Universities. Shrishti Art Gallery at Road no.15 Jubilee Hills, promoted by Mrs. Remani Nambiar was started in 2002. Forming out of the passion of Mrs. Remani Nair’s for art and culture, the gallery has had more than 200 shows by various Indian contemporary artists over the past eight years. Shrishti’s collection includes works of renowned artists such as Laxma Goud, Vaikuntam, Anjolie Ela Menon, Achuthan Kudaloor, Surya Prakash and many more. Shrishti Art Gallery presents a range of original paintings and sculptures, conceived and created by best contemporary Indian art. The gallery also gives you an option of buying contemporary art online via Shrishtiart, their website. SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010 TULIP 39

Kalakriti Art gallery at Road no.10, Banjara Hills, has been helping artists who are both “recognized masters” as well “promoting talent and critically artists” who are still to receive wide-ranging applause. When asked about the reason for setting up an art gallery, the swift reply was “because of the passion for art”. And it is clear with the Annual Art Camps that Kalakriti conducts that it’s not always about the money, honey. Gallery Space at Road no.12, Banjara Hills, was started in 1990 by T.Hanumanth Rao, himself an artist who graduated from Shantiniketan school of Art, with an M.F.A. in Print Making. Ms.Lalitha who works at Gallery Space, had this to say, “ Gallery space was born out of Mr.Rao being an Art

Enthusiast. This year we have had events like Sayeed Ali’s solo show named “Inspirations” which was inaugurated by actor Tarun and Maya-An exhibition of Photoshop paintings of Anil which was inaugurated by Juliett Wurr ( U.S. Consulate) There are many more Art Galleries in the city; all it requires is an eye which spots them and an eye which appreciates art. The idea is to appreciate art and to find these temples of art and worship the abundant talent on display. Maybe the next time you are looking for something to do on a weekend, you can think beyond popcorn flicks, sports bars and social dos.

GADGETS

GIZMO FREAKS’ SPOT By Mohammed Abdul

The gadgets showcased really don’t need any introduction. They have been in the news a lot and are top of the notch creations. This one goes out for all the freaks out there, gizmo freaks. iPad The iPad, is what experts call a “peripheral computer” — a highly portable, touch-based, but limited-capability tablet. It is designed to be a companion to a larger, traditional personal computer that provides printing, software updates, media storage, backup and other services that are missing from the mobile tablet. The Apple iPad is a touch screen tablet based device. The device is only 0.5 inches thick, and has a 9.7 inch multi-touch IPS panel LED screen. The resolution of the screen is 1024*768 at 132 pixels per inch. Apple had tinkered with the names iSlate/iTablet for the device, but in the end they went with “iPad”. The iPad uses a 1 GHz A4 Processor, which has been made by Apple itself. The iPad has all the usual sensors found in most of the devices today like the Compass, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer etcetera. The iPad also has Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, along with Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n). There is also going to be a Wi-Fi + 3G model of the iPad. The iPad also has built-in speakers along with microphone and 3.5mm audio jack. It also has a TV-Out along with support for multiple languages. The iPad also has a 30 pin connector to sync it via USB to a Mac computer. The device does not though have USB ports, SD Card reader or an inbuilt camera. The iPad can be synced using iTunes, just like iPod Touch/iPhone. The battery life of the iPad is quite impressive at 10hours, with the standby time being a whooping 30days. The iPad could serve as an adjunct to your current computer collection for many purposes — for a child’s entertainment and education, for quick Web lookups, for email, for organizing thoughts, for reading books and viewing videos... and for doing other interesting tasks of many different kinds, supported by creative app developers now and in the future.

Sony Walkman NWZ-W252 The Sony Walkman NWZ-W252 is a sporty Walkman and it’s been designed to do its job for a marathon runner or an athlete who is committed to one’s training. It weighs just 1.6 ounces, making it extremely lightweight, though it does take up a bit of your space. One of the main reasons why one would want to listen to music while doing exercise is simply because training does have its boring times. So to satisfy this, a sporty music player will at least need to have decent music quality to keep you entertained. The W252 has inherited Sony’s reputation as a leading audio brand, its in-ear headphones design enhances this further too by canceling out noise from your environment. Transferring music to the W252 is simple, simply connect it to the dock then drag and drop just like a flash drive. It supports MP3, WMA, AAC, and linear PCM audio. For more advanced users, you can also sync via Windows Media Player or iTunes. Both Windows and Mac OS X are supported. 42 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

GADGETS

Are you a budding photographer who wants something that is far out and able to help you achieve the next level in your photo shoots? Or are you already a seasoned professional who is looking for yet another piece of equipment to assist you in maintaining your position at the echelon of your industry? The Canon EOS 7D Studio Version will definitely appeal to professional school and event photographers, where it comes with four levels of “locking” camera controls for studio environments. Not only that, the new EOS 7D Studio Version is also accompanied by the announcement of a Canon Barcode Solution that will link customer data directly with the image file in order for it to be maintained through the whole workflow process, making it perfect for school photographers, forensic and medical photo workflows. Administrators can disable unwanted features and settings in the new “Locking” EOS 7D Studio Version DSLR, letting professional studio operators work with the comfort of knowing the end result will be both reliable and repeatable. With a quartet of lock levees as mentioned, it allows administrators to enable the appropriate level of camera functionality for any studio operation. Not only that, custom functionality management can also be achieved via each level by unlocking individual features according to operator-specific needs. Security is further augmented with a daily password that prevents anyone with a different vision from changing the camera settings as well as disrupting the overall project and workflow. This is one of the best offerings from Canon, and deserves five stars.

Nokia N9 and X5 Nokia’s first MeeGo slider smartphone will be the Nokia N9. A slider phone that seems to be an upgraded version of N8, with the addition of a QWERTY keyboard. This QWERTY keyboard though is too flat & has a tilting display. In the mould of the company’s communicators, N9 has a sleek look and seems to tend away from its predecessor. Another newly launched Nokia QWERTY phone is the X5, a square slider phone, which has been officially announced in Singapore. The new X5 is quite different from the Nokia X5 announced in China a few months ago, and specifically targeted to young generation. Features of the phone include Symbian S60, social networking integration (Facebook, MySpace, YouTube) with notification feature, a small QVGA screen, and a 5MP camera. The square shape is quite a handful but it makes the phone look incomplete. Added to that, the small screen is too small for viewing any multimedia content. This is a good buy if you really want your phone to be small and mobile.

ZOMM The ZOMM is designed to link to one’s phone or mobile device wirelessly via Bluetooth, and emit a high pitched noise if the ZOMM and device get too far apart. The ZOMM is meant to be kept in your pocket (perhaps with your keys), so if you leave your cell phone where you shouldn’t (like on a table of a restaurant), the ZOMM will alert you. Out of the box set up was pretty simple, and the device needed to be charged for about 4 hours and then have mobile software loaded to it. This product is recommended to anyone who has left their phone behind before. Of course, if you can occasionally leave your mobile phone behind, then you might not remember charging the ZOMM when needed. Here’s something that you might not know. The ZOMM was invented by a Mom. That isn’t some Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme going on there, but ZOMM is an acronym for Zachary, Olivia, and Madison’s Mom. Apparently, “it is a brainchild of a mom who noticed a common problem among all mobile phone users and provided a solution”. It definitely lives up to its slogan of “alarmingly smart”. Put ‘em All In

What is in your handbag right now? Is it neat, clean and organized or is it more of an eclectic mix of items that have randomly gathered over time? Women have misconceptions on what to carry in their handbags. We always end up carrying more stuff than we need, while always rummaging for stuff we really need without avail. Here is a list of essentials to carry in your handbag apart from your cell phone and wallet. DAB and SPRAY No need to carry all make-up, a neutral-colored pressed powder will get you through the day. A handy spritzer size bottle of your favourite perfume and a small can of deodorant are vital to keep you smelling fresh and feeling great all day. There is nothing worse than the feeling that you need to freshen up and you are not carrying products. Essential make-up items will vary between women but usually some pressed powder, mascara and lipgloss will cover the basics.

PROTECT ME We get it, you might drive your own car, but having this baby inside your bag is never a redundancy. Rain can come at any time, even on the sunniest summer day. Carry a mini polka dotted umbrella easily available everywhere.

FLAUNT THEM OFF If Audrey Hepburn had one, then a fashion-conscious girl should have one too. We are talking about sunglasses. Go for a classic black color to suit every mood. The bigger the frame, the better!

SELF DEFENSE

GET CLICKING You wouldn’t know what interesting stuff you come across. Even if you get into an accident, it will come in use to click pictures and keep them as proof. So keep one handy! 44 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

Caught in trouble by eve teasing or a stalkerget on to some action. A strong concentrate of pepper when sprayed on the face of the attacker, puts him “out of action” for at least an hour. Leaving you enough time to run away or call police or get help.

GROOM LIKE A SALON Carry a small brush or comb in your bag so that you can have a salon look at the drop of your hat! Whilst you may be able to beg or borrow other essential items, sharing a brush is something that nobody wants to do – so be prepared and carry your own.

CHEW ME UP

SAVE THE CHANGE Handy for the bus travel and distributing alms to a beggar on the pavement- Put all coins in it and use it when required. It will save you from the grace of changing big notes and decrease your habit of using more money than required.

WRAP n STORE Be a friend of the earth. Fold a large cloth shopping bag and tuck it in your handbag! And who says it has to be a boring white one? Dare to colorize your groceries.

This is handy for keeping your mouth nice and fresh, and vital if you have had onions or garlic for your lunch. Chewing gum can revive your mouth and is sociable if you want to offer it around. If you don’t like chewing gum then include a box of tic-tacs or breathe fresheners.

WIPE OUT

PIN IT UP

These need very little introduction. Have a handy size pack in your bag and when you have used one then make sure to throw it away. Wet them to rectify a make-up problem or use them in the event of there being no loo roll. There are hundreds of uses for these beauties so don’t leave home without them!

Yes, the common safety pin. It has so many uses and endless capacity to get you out of a very sticky situation. Whether it’s pinning your blouse when a button pops of or using it to pull up a faulty zipper, the safety pin is a must for your handbag and if possible, you should include two because you never know when someone else may require one and you could be their saving grace.

ARGHHHHHH….. HEADACHE

The pressure of a busy day can strike any time in the form of a headache and other aches and pains may present themselves at different times of the month. Don’t let this stop you in your tracks, carry some painkillers in your bag and be prepared to fight the pain away.

MOST ESSENTIAL

COVER THE PAIN Band-aids doesn’t take up much room and are invaluable if you cut yourself. Keep a couple in a small plastic bag to makes sure they stay clean.

Now, if you’ve figured what to carry, maybe you need to start worrying about the right handbag to tote. For those of you who chop and change your handbags on a regular basis, it is a good idea to put these essentials in a couple of smaller bags that zip up. For example, keep your plasters, women’s bits, tissues, tablets, safety pins, and nail file in a smaller pouch and the rest of your essentials in another small zipper bag. This way, all you will have to do is transfer these little bags in one quick and easy operation!

SPECIAL BONDING

Happily

MARRIED What keeps that ‘spark’ alive in a marriage? Well, that’s one a tricky question but there is one such couple who had probably never had the reason to think of this question. Viren Agarwal and Shikha Agarwal is that couple who believe that understanding and adjusting with each other as friends has helped them surpass all the ups and downs of life and TULIP has the privilege to capture this beautiful rare bond with its readers.

W

hat is the one thing that we all look for in a partner for life? It’s that ‘the one’ is your closest friend first and if that happens then the rest of the world falls in place. Agreeing with me, Viren Agarwal and Shikha Agarwal believe that the beautiful bond between a married couple starts with an even more beautiful friendship. ‘Dreamz’, is a well known brand of a diamond jewellery firm ‘Sainath Jewellers’ located at Somajiguda. Shikha Agarwal, Viren Agarwal and his elder brother are the main proprietors of this top notch business. Viren mentions “Shikha has and is been lucky for me. Before our marriage we were into Textile business and soon after Shikha came into my life, we started the Diamond business.” Shikha adds here that very well remembers the initial stages of the diamond business that started only three months after marriage. They had started off the diamond business at home with just five rings. Also, Shikha was very young when she got married; she had not even completed her graduation. But Viren and the family has been a tremendous support to her and because of this she was able to complete her graduation. “Where I am is all because of him” says an honest Shikha who is a GIA diploma holder along with Viren.

Viren interests us with the history of his ‘Dreamz’. “We are basically from Rajasthan and my fore-fathers are here in Hyderabad since a magnificent 150 years. We were into Textile business and I was introduced to work at an early age and by the age of 18 I was able to take care of the business in case the elders were away. While we started facing issues with the business, my elder brother and I had plans to start a new venture and that is when Diamond business had struck us. We struggled for about a year initially and then it took us about two years to settle down and establish the business.” Shikha modestly states that ever since she joined the family, she was encouraged by Viren to work with him in the business. Hence, during the struggle while Viren travelled alone on business purposes, Shikha took care of the office. “I don’t have that kind of narrow mentality. I have always wanted Shikha to be a part of the business. I have lots of friends and I want Shikha to have the limelight as well” modestly says Viren. While they both work on the newly created ‘Dreamz club’ for privileged customers which is being planned to soon be launched at a large scale, they also have their plate full with their upcoming stores in the same vertical in Hyderabad and other cities.

SPECIAL BONDING “After marriage I had lost all my contact with most of my friends. But now, I am in the process of being a part of various ladies clubs and I also try to network and give time to my family and friends” says an excited Shikha. Is there an ideal couple? Viren and Shikha tell us details that make us want to believe that there is something ideal about their bond, if not anything else. Viren and Shikha are together almost every hour of their lives. They leave for office at around 11 and are there working all day till 8 in the evening. Viren admits that he is low whenever Shikha is not around. People in the office also know that Viren can’t really work without Shikha and whenever she is not around he is quite lost and not in the best of moods. Shikha smiles as she says “I

go wherever I want to without him but wherever he goes I make sure accompany him so that I am with him 24/7. There are times where I have and want to leave office early or come late but then he says “Mera kya hoga” and I just don’t have anything else to say. He even hates it when I go to my mother’s place” to which Viren modestly agrees.

Viren states that his parents too are quite dependent on Shikha. They love her and trust her with everything. Shikha’s father-inlaw loves her cooking and usually asks for special delicacies for him and the guests. Shikha prefers to be home on Sundays to spend quality time with her in-laws. On the other hand, Viren pays visit to Shikha’s mother in every 10-15 days to spend quality time with her. Nothing is ideal until it is tested. Viren and Shikha have had their share of tests too. “Five years back, we both got more attached to each other during Viren’s illness. This is probably one of the reasons why he wants me in front of his eyes all the time” Shikha pauses. “There is only one time I remember that Viren and I didn’t talk for a day. During our courtship, I had gone out somewhere and had not been able to contact him. That probably upset him so much that he didn’t talk to me the whole next day. But then when he saw me upset, he sent bouquets and gifts just to make me smile” says a happy Shikha. To add to the moment, Viren reveals that on Shikha’s 21st birthday, he had sent her roses

almost the whole day for all the 21 years. Well, roses were not the end, cake, gifts, a day at Ramoji film city, a romantic dinner and dance at the Dream Valley were followed by the flowers. Well, I can’t help but smile at their special gestures just to see each other smile.

“We are a very romantic couple in our own way. We like having fun and have had our share of fun at all times. Sometimes we have to make sure to have arguments only to have the pleasure to make up to one another” says a smiling Viren. “Our courtship and the

special days of the wedding were a lot of fun. We recently went to Bangkok for our 9th honeymoon” they laugh as they say.

While Shikha loves kids, Viren is a self-admitted cleanliness freak who loves festivals, parties and travelling. Viren however is a calm, composed, carefree yet cautious person while Shikha is more energetic and full of life. Viren and Shikha do have the love for each other but as individuals there are minor wishes from each other and it is all in good humor. While Viren detests un-ironed clothes, he wishes Shikha was more involved with the staff. “To me good will is very important, I am okay if the business does not do that well but the good will should be maintained at all times” affirms Viren. “I dislike him getting upset and angry. I can’t take it” cares Shikha. Not only do they take the ‘ideal couple’ tag gracefully but their friends also believe so. In special messages for each other

Shikha says “We can’t live without each other. I always want him to be happy and achieve everything he wants to and I want to be there to support him in everything”. “We will never leave each other, hold hands forever. She solves my problems and mistakes and vice versa. I believe we are an ideal couple” continues a romantic Viren

Shikha is very fond of kids and probably anything that relates to children. “I remember when we had gone to Bangkok, Shikha liked a stuff toy and I didn’t buy it for her then and she still taunts me for it” complains Viren.

“In fact it has been 9 and a half years since our wedding and we still feel as we have spent just few days with each other. We do not have kids but we believe that life does not end without kids. We are anyway there for each other and sometimes treat the other like a kid” reveals a proud Shikha.

TRAVEL

By air Major hotels have coach services to and from dabolim airport, 30 kms from the state capital panaji for picking up and dropping off their guests. The airport has a pre-paid taxi counter. All the major airline services have daily flights to goa from bangalore, delhi, mumbai and pune and twice a week from chennai and kochi. International service airlines also connect goa with kuwait and sharjah twice a week.

Local transport Taxis: for tourists, taxis serve as the main means of traveling between resorts. One will find them lined up outside most charter hotels, where a board invariably lists the destinations in and around the region. The fixed rate fares only apply to peak season and at other times one should be able to negotiate a hefty reduction from the demanded fare. Motorcycle taxis: goa’s unique pillion-passenger motorcycle taxis known locally as “pilots” are ideal for nipping between beaches or into towns from the resorts. Bona fide operators ride black bikes with yellow mudguards and yellow number plates. Fares which should be settled in advance are almost half the auto-rickshaw rates. Rented motorcycles: renting motorcycles in goa offer a lot of freedom to tourists. Officially one needs an international driver’s licence to rent or ride anything more powerful than a 25 cc moped. Rates vary according to the season, the vehicle and how long one wants to rent it. Most owners also insist on a deposit and passport as security. The range is pretty standard and the reasonable choice is a 100CC motorbike.

Place to visit Turtel nesting site Morjim, galgibag and agonda beaches – the largest nesting places of the giant olive ridley turtle. An amazing phenomenon of nature, this is a regular annual occurrence. While earlier it was a hunting ground for sea turtles, today it is a modal conservation centre

Carambolim lake Adding to the charm of the quiet village of carambolim is the scenic reservoir fringed by lush greenery. Migratory birds seek this verdant landscape every year till the end of the season. The cacophony of 80 different varieties of birds is unbelievable, tending to their young in the mixed heronries on the aquatic vegetation

Calangute beach Calangute is the most popular beach with thousands thronging it in both the peak and off-season. The waves rise high above as you wash away your city blues, though swimmer need to be a trifle cautious because of the sudden drop and the rising waves.

Baga beach Compared to calangute, baga is quieter and also more isolated. Its scenic beauty, with the creek, the retreat house perched on the hill and the fewer tourist buses all have contributed to its unique beauty. It is more popular with western tourists who love to use it as a base for water sports and fishing in the area.

Miramar beach From the beach across the river is an excellent view of fort aguada. With its proximity to panaji, and located near educational institutions, miramar is very much both a family beach and a meeting point for young people. It is also a hot spot for fitness fiends and walkers.

Shree bhagavati temple 28 kms from panaji in pernem taluka, the temple is said to be more than 500 years old. Made of black stone, two life size images of elephants in a standing position at the entrance welcomes visitors.

PARTIES

@ LIQUIDS, TOUCH, 10D, B&C & SPOIL This fortnight the party scene at many pubs was dry. Most of the socialites were busy spending time shopping, attending movie screenings, making their presence felt at art exhibitions and watching plays. The others who attended came down for unwinding on weekends. Ladies night bore an unimpressive look with most of them giving it a miss thanks to the pub brawls. We hope the coming fortnight is

HEALTH

BARIATRICS A PANACEA FOR WEIGHTLOSS

- Dr. Sadiqa Umaima Babar

Dr. Sadiqa is India’s first US qualified Bariatric Physician from the American Board of Bariatric Medicine. There are only 450 US qualified bariatric physicians worldwide. She is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. She also actively practices BHRT- Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and holds membership in the American Academy of Anti- aging Medicine and is the Hyderabad representative of the American Society of Rejuvenative Medicine. She has done MD-Family Medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA and MBBS from Hyderabad, India. She is an alumni of Phillips Exeter Academy, Class of 1994, New Hampshire, USA and The Continental School, Jeddah, KSA. She has come back to India to serve her country with her husband and 4 children. She is a Director of Times Hospital at Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, where she practices the art and science of medical weight loss otherwise known as Bariatric Medicine. What is Bariatric Medicine? Bariatric Medicine is the non-surgical medical management of overweight and obese patients. What is a Bariatric Physician? Bariatric Physicians have the knowledge base and specialized skills to ensure an elevated standard of care in the management and treatment of obesity and related conditions. What is the purpose of Bariatric Certification? Certified Bariatric Physicians go by established Bariatric Practice Guidelines that focus on four main areas for successful weightloss: 1. Diet 2. Exercise 3. Behavior Modification 4. Medication, if appropriate Why Bariatrics? In 1985, NIH-National Institutes of Health designated obesity as a specific disease category that requires treatment by trained physicians. Obesity is considered a chronic medical condition and not just a behavioral issue that an individual should be able to manage. This is the reason why the medical community has become better at treating obesity related conditions and co-morbidities, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes but have not come to a consensus on how to treat obesity itself. Is it safe to use medicines to reduce weight? 58 TULIP SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2010

It is very safe to use prescribed medication to lose weight. Medications used by bariatric physicians have been tried and tested for effectiveness and safety for many years before they are prescribed. They have minimum to no side effects.

HEALTH Times Hospital has an excellent Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery Team. Senior plastic surgeons perform a whole range of surgeries here. Patients wishing to get eg. tummy-tucks, spot reductions and tightening done after they have lost weight can conveniently avail this consultation and service at the hospital. How much weight loss can one expect? Depending on the patient, one can expect, on an average, a` weight loss of 1- 2 kg per week with this bariatric treatment.

As in any other branch of medicine, medications and their uses are known by doctors, and if used by people with no knowledge or even half knowledge to self-medicate, it can be harmful. There are so many weight loss products available to people in the market or over the internet but there is no accountability, “after sales” service, or freedom from sideeffects. As with any other branch of medicine, there are many alternate options for treatment. It is ultimately the patient’s choice if they want to be treated with follow-up under the responsible care of a bariatric physician or self treat by buying random products available in the market. Do weight loss medicines cause hormonal problems in patients? As popularly believed, they do not cause hormone imbalances such as thyroid problems in patients. Being overweight on the other hand can result in hormone imbalances in patients and these are the imbalances that produce so many diseases in obese patients. Fat itself makes hundreds of bad chemicals and hormones that are harmful to the body- causing, for example, inflammation which leads to blocking of the arteries (atherosclerosis) leading to heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary embolism. Fat makes the hormone estrogen which, when in excess, can cause cancers of the breast, uterus, prostate and ovary. Medical Weight Loss--what to expect at Times Bariatric Centre ?

I cannot exercise. I have knee pain. Can I still lose weight? Exercise does not make you lose weight. Yes, you can still lose weight without exercising on this weight loss program Can patients living overseas benefit from this treatment? Many patients living in other states and countries have already lost weight and benefitted from this program. Such patients can email or call Times Bariatric Centre for assessment. Will I regain my weight after I stop this treatment? As part of this treatment, you will be followed up for maintenance and be given enough knowledge base to prevent you from regaining weight
