Tea Party

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK March 8th is International Women’s Day. What does it really mean? Is it a day when some silent women are given their lawful place in society or is it a day to commemorate the equableness’? What happens on Women’s Day? Are all mothers given the day off from their parenting duties? Do their husbands and children pause a moment to think about what their wives and mothers do for them on a daily basis? Is this the appointed day for them to show their appreciation? Is this just a day for feminists to climb on to their soapboxes and roll out their tired speeches on women’s right? Is this just another opportunity for men to complain that now women even have a special day assigned to them? The answer to this is “Put on your thinking caps and reason it yourself”. I wish there was various ways in which we could examine how many less dowry deaths there were or how many men decided not to hit their wives or how many more girls were encouraged to get an education… The list is multitude. In this issue come and indulge yourself in the tidbits of love, beauty, relationships and hope that we have put together to make your life better. Let the sincerity of these simple articles speak to your soul. There’s wit, realities, encouragement and certainly plenty of enthusiasm packed into these meaningful write-ups. When you’re down in spirits, what comforts you? For me, it’s usually a mixture of chocolate, laughter and encouraging thoughts. But for women it needs to be a get together or some simple food that can be rustled soon. Chef in you section shows how to whip up some comforting food in a jiffy while there is also ‘how to throw a proper tea party’ charted out. Piece of life section talks about the unreal social parties everyday while Cover Lady “Tisca Chopra” talks about life, movies and what it means to be a women. Cars and Gadgets for girls, Unusual Gifts for the women, Desirable ladies on the planet, Manicured Nails, Beauty across the decades and women talking about women’s daythis and much more have been put in this issue. So go ahead, let these inspiring articles sprinkle stardust into your life. THREE THINGS I’VE LEARNT THIS ISSUE Women being outspoken doesn’t have to be threatening. It simply means they have the courage to be sincere, open and honest. This opens the door to deeper communication all around. At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent. SO give yourself time women. All that ladies really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt!!! Also a good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book. Therefore ladies do indulge in them frequently.

LINDSAY’S

A

Theft Excuse I’m So Bussy

Accused jewellery bandit Lindsay Lohan is, predictably, throwing out every excuse in the book in her efforts to somehow beat the rap on the theft charges. We’ve heard her whine that she was raised better than that. The necklace isn’t worth enough to make this a lawbreaking case. According to the police report, Lindsay’s assistant had given the news to the cops “Ms. Lohan was in possession of the necklace and wanted to give the necklace back to the store the day after she took it from the store, but she was very busy.”As you may know, Lindsay was tipped off that a warrant had been issued for her place. She then had her assistant return the necklace she’s accused of robbing. Lindsay’s assistant told the cops that before going to the police station she tried returning the necklace to the jewelry store, but no one picked up the phone. There was no description of the stolen necklace given to Ms. Lohan, yet she gave the exact necklace in question to her assistant to return. 6 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

I made Bengali mustard fish, masala mutton paaya and other stuff for Akshay and the Joker cast and crew. She quips jokingly that Akshay’s fitness expert Jennifer might be very angry with her as she is feeding Akki with spicy delicious food. Poonam said, “When Akshay would eat all that I cooked for him I would catch Jennifer looking at me as if admonishing me for wreaking havoc with his diet.”

I promise to stick by you through hits and flops. I look forward to growing old with you.” Lara too vowed to stick to her life partner in thick and thin, ‘I promise to return your serves and volley alongside you. We are confident about her pulling off the role successfully.” Talking about similarities between the original and Rohit’s remake, Rohit adds, “75% of the film will be different, while the original basic premise will stay the same. SEHWAG HAPPY

SPORTS

To Equal Kapil’s World Cup Record

S

Sehwag, who plundered the Bangladesh bowling attack in Saturday’s game here, was happy to have equaled Kapil Dev’s feat of 175 runs in a World Cup game .Kapil’s 175 - then the highest by a batsman in a One-day game - came under trying circumstances after India were struggling at 17/5 in a must-win league match against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup. I am happy and honored to have equaled his (Kapil Dev) score in the World Cup. People will now speak about both of us getting 175,” said Sehwag after India scored a convincing 87-run wins over Bangladesh in their first Group B game. He said the wicket was good to bat on and he and fellow opener Sachin Tendulkar began by scoring at 10 runs an over in the first three over’s and after that they decided they were going too fast and will have to be a little careful. Sehwag even said that when the field was spread, it became easy for him to rotate the strike.

FIFA’S

Women Football

T

The long wait will finally come to an end on 26 June 2011 as the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 kicks off in Germany. Fans are already looking forward to packed stadiums, a great atmosphere and women’s football of the highest quality as the best 16 teams from the world prepare to battle it out for the coveted trophy. Grace, elegance and athleticism are just some of the attributes often used to describe the likes of Marta, Birgit Prinz and Kelly Smith, each of whom have proven the quality of the women’s game at countless FIFA tournaments over the years .Indeed, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said that “the future of football is feminine”, is sounding less and less fanciful by the day. Women’s football continued to boom in 2010, with 512 women’s international matches played during the course of the year, over half of which were part of the qualification campaign for Germany 2011. The consistent success of the German national team, whose seven UEFA Women’s EUROs (1989, 1991, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009) and two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2003 and 2007) form an international track record unlikely ever to be matched - either by women or men.

UNIQUE PROMOTION Of Weavers

Displayed Works 14 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

EDEDAA organized a two-day event to promote hand-loom products, produced by Chenetha Color Weaves, in the premises of Inorbit mall. Handlooms were promoted in a very unique fashion - using photographs of people engaged in the weaving process displayed along the staircases. All the way along staircases from P2 (parking) lobby to P1 lobby area, photographs were put up and lighting up the staircases with LEDs was also there. The organization believes in driving awareness about various aspects of hand-loom creation – such as the tedious production process, the lifestyle and economics of the industry, etc – would lead to better appreciation of the products.

MUSIC DELIGHTS

A mystical journey of classical rhythms with an exquisite blend of pop rock beats, STRINGS from Pakistan talks to TULIP while the band was in town for a concert. Here’s an excerpt from the chat with the duo singers!

Live in concert at B & C was overwhelming. Everyone loved the video and thought it was very inspiring. We just wanted to let the anger out of our system but in a constructive way.

Bilal Maqsood & Faisal Kapadia How do you feel about STRINGS coming back to Hyderabad? We are really excited to come back. Hyderabad is very homely to us and very similar to Pakistan. Insha Allah we’re performing the 7th or 8th time in Hyderabad. We always come back with energized and full of fresh ideas. In India, Bollywood dominates the music scene. How did you manage to carve a niche for yourself in this scenario? Strings is the music which fills in the gaps between the western and Bollywood music both. That’s all I can say! ‘Durr’ and ‘Dhaani’ were very famous albums even beyond the front, since they were released. What’s the journey been like since then? It was great! They were actually no expectations while releasing these two albums. Thankfully people loved it all around the world. The most important news was that we got a large number of fans from all the major cities that see Strings from different light. How was your latest song and video ‘’Ab Khud Kuch Kerna Paray Ga’’ received? As much as we wanted to record and release the song, we were equally unsure about the response it would receive (Laughs) it

What’s next for Strings, do we get to see you more in Bollywood? Hopefully! This year we shall be doing something more interesting. Strings had performed a number of charity concerts recently. What was the band’s motivation behind the move? Yes. Ofcourse! We have been blessed by the grace of God. Strings have been around for a long time. We believe that society has given us a lot and it’s important to give it back too. (Laughs). It might sound a little selfish but it’s true. Define Strings in three words. Consistency. Simplicity. Music from heart. ‘’String is the String between India and Pakistan’’ Would you like to talk a little about that? Music plays a very important role and we as Strings are also very important. When we come here to perform we interact with a large number of crowds and after we go back to Pakistan we take back the good memories with us and share it all with the people there. So they get really happy listening to us and knowing the reality, that’s not shown on television. Strings is actually connecting both the countries. On Hyderabad We have always enjoyed a massive fan base in Hyderabad. The Hyderabadi audiences are really awesome and we love to perform here always! MARCH 01-15, 2011 TULIP 15

Ageless Decades of Beautiful Skin

By Saloni Gupta

You already know that age plays a huge role in how your skin looks and the way you take care of it! GO AHEAD… peel away the years for smoother and more radiant skin!!! TULIP takes you on a journey giving the insights of the 4 decades.

In Your

In Your

20s

A

ttention, dewy young beauties: This is the most important decade for your skin. The way you care for it now will determine what it will look like for the rest of your life. Because it’s probably at its healthiest, with great collagen support, your skin is flexible. Whatever sun damage you may have has not yet started to show. Lucky you: Light reflects off the plump surface of your cheeks, giving you a healthy glow. The number one complaint among women in their 20s is acne! But it’s largely avoidable. Most 20-somethings crack out because they use dehydrating products that strip their skin of natural oils which causes oil glands to overproduce, resulting in pimples. Sunscreens and a weekly pack are musts. Pick a brand, any brand. But be absolutely sure that your moisturizer has SPF 15 or 20, and that it gives you both UVA and UVB protection. As for the weekly pack homemade chick pea flour with a pinch of turmeric or fullers earth can be used. Fortnightly rose water clean ups where apart from moisturizing the skin you can also remove away layers of dead skin and blackheads are a good option if you don’t have a problematic and sensitive skin. 16 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

30s

E

ven if you’ve taken good care of your skin, you’ll probably start noticing fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth. Dark-skinned women might notice yellowing of the skin and patchy skin tone. Fair-skinned women might see some hyper pigmentation, freckles (brown spots) and reddishness. Skin becomes thinner and improved, there’s some loss of collagen, and cell turnover has begun to slow down, making your complexion look a little dreary. In addition to SPF 15 or 20 with UVA/UVB protection, your moisturizer should contain antioxidants, like green or white tea, pomegranate, or vitamin C, which will protect your skin from damaging free radicals. Start wearing an eye cream daily for dark circles. You’ll see an immediate improvement if you exfoliate. You’re getting enough exfoliation if you’re using a retinoid at night. But if you’re not, or if your skin isn’t too sensitive to handle it, add a cleanser, moisturizer, or night cream with glycolic or salicylic acid. Avoid harsh scrubs and look for one with synthetic micro beads, which are gentler than those containing larger, irregularly shaped ones. For a clue the scrubs are blue in colour with AHA

essentials. Once in every two days while watching TV during the nights squash a grape fruit or a piece of watermelon and slather it all over your skin and let it dry. SO while you enjoy your daily quota of entertainment let the skin gather in all the goodness of those rejuvenating juices and work their magic for the next day.

hose great beach vacations you took in your teens are showing up on your face. You’re beginning to see cumulative sun damage in the form of blotchiness, bad skin and redness. You’re also losing more collagen and elasticity, and your skin retains less moisture. Because it doesn’t reflect light evenly, your complexion is losing some of its glow. Use a creamy rather than gel cleanser morning and night, unless you can tolerate one with a mild AHA or salicylic acid once a day. Supplement your broadspectrum moisturizer, which should contain SPF 15 or 20, with a couple of creams, lotions, or serums containing at least two types of antioxidants. You’ll get a wider benefit from switching off, because different antioxidants address different

problems. Or, if your skin is beginning to look creepy, try a formula with peptides, which have been shown to strengthen collagen. Treat dryness with a rich moisturizing cream that contains shea butter or oils. High end anti aging facials like Galvanic, Wrinkle control, yummy chocolate facial, Platinum and Flower facials (containing marigold and rose essentials) are good for this type of skin. Indulging in it once a month can work wonders for the skin, there is no harm in getting it twice because as long as you enjoy the pampering, the results will definite show on your face.

on’t even think of retiring from the skincare game. It’s never too late to prevent sun damage and to stop the progression of damage you may already have. Cell turnover is slow and the most significant change you’ll notice in your complexion is dryness and loss of elasticity. Expression lines no longer disappear after you stop smiling or squinting; pores are more visible, especially on the nose and cheeks. You’re likely to have developed spider veins, pigmentation and spots from sun damage. Menopause can cause a multitude of skin problems, including extreme dryness and acne. Once you hit your 60s and 70s, basically all the issues that arose in your 50s become more extreme. Aren’t you glad you’re flooded with post menopausal relish? Wash morning and night with a non soap cleanser or a creamy, foaming one. Apply and age control cream and enjoy the ageing. Strictly in this age give a second thought to Botox and liposuctions because they really don’t enhance the beauty of timeless ageing. Take a cue from Helen, Sharmila Tagore and Waheeda Rehman. SPECIAL BONDING

Redefining Cliqued Relations By Bhuvana Balaji

There is nothing to imply that motherhood cannot be shared by more than one person. Usha and Aarti Badruka redefine the whole context of a mother-in-law — daughter-inlaw relationship and adorn it with a fresh enchanting guise which is beautiful inside-out and is a wonderful paradigm of this life-long alliance. Let’s experience a flash of life from the prospect of this inspirational mother-in-law — daughter…ohh wait...mother-daughter pair. “Right from the start, it has been a very special bonding…it has never been the dramatic mother-in-law daughter-in-law relationship…and I am glad never to have experienced that with Aarti,” says Usha, her eyes glowing with fondness for her daughter-in-law. Aarti seconds her opinion with a charming smile and says, “Whenever we go out, people recognize us as mother and daughter. They generally don’t know I am her daughter-in-law unless we tell them about it. We are more like friends; we go to our lunches together, we gel so well…our likes are very similar, we both like to be very organized and perfect. Since we manage work and home, it becomes all the more easier because we also get to spend a lot of time together. Usha and Aarti own the very popular boutique known for its unique collection of exclusive clothing line and jewellery…the Orange Feathers. Talking about the times before officially getting into this relationship, Usha says, “I know her from 1 year before their marriage. My son gave me her number and I just gave her a call and asked her to come over. We had a long three-hour conversation and then I told her, ‘Welcome into the family!’ That was the moment i realised she was the perfect fit in the family picture.” At this, Aarti responds with a radiant smile. Daughters are angels sent from above to fill our heart with unending love. And daughter-in-laws are your son’s chosen gift to

you. Talking about their first chat, Usha says Aarti was a little nervous, but she was very frank about the whole affair. “She clear told us about her likes and dislikes and she also told what she would like to do with our approval. Basically, she was so casual and cool and so honest about everything and that impressed me…that’s all I want because the family for us comes first and then it is work. It’s not like we are social bees…no no not at all…we put our family on top always.”

18 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

SPECIAL BONDING me do it now’ and I adore her completely for that,” says Usha. Talking about having a perspective about each other before having to bond with each other, Usha says, “I think she didn’t really have a perspective of me because she was working, she had her own life and she used to hang out with youngsters, party and chill out with them, so she wouldn’t have been thinking so far ahead. But I, as a mother-in-law, had some expectations. I wanted someone who is smart, can talk well, can carry herself well, work efficiently and I wanted her to spend quality time with me for me to get to know her well…she is perfectly what I expected her to be…in fact, a lot more.” “Even when it came to work, she came and picked up very well with it. I didn’t have to teach her anything and I am really glad as she has made my work a lot easier now,” she adds with an Mother-in-laws and daughter-in-laws generally tend to be opposites and there is the generation gap which gets in the way of a healthy relationship. But this pair is completely different from many of those. “The way we talk, mingle with people, our fashion sense, it’s all very similar. She mixes with my social circle very easily too. There’s nothing like age difference for her when it comes to talking to people or getting to know them. I threw a few parties before their wedding for my friends to know her and then took her to Kolkata, where I have a big family. Everybody loved her and the way she easily adjusted with all of them,” the very thankful and pleased mother-in-law says. They spend a lot of time together as they do almost everything with each other. “We go for our evening outs every weekend, either a movie or for dinner or just make some casual plans… just the four of us…or we throw some party at home. Mom knows all my friends so well. Everyone says ki tum dikhte nahi ho mother-in-law daughter-in-law,” quips Aarti with a nonchalant laugh. “We are very comfortable together…if there’s something that I have not done the right way or I face a problem…she has always been there for me to help me sort it out. Even I make sure that I take care of her in every way. I never want her to feel that she has left her mom’s house and come to a different environment. She is equally concerned about me too. She always takes up responsibilities…takes care of the house and she has told me, ‘Mom you have done it for so many years…let

affectionate smile. “By God’s grace, I got the best daughter-in-law I could ask for…100 per cent. Even my husband always has a good word to say about her. Aarti gels well with him too. It’s her mom who has taught her all of this…the basic nurturing has been done by her…whatever work Aarti takes up, she does it seriously.” Responding to this, Aarti says, “I am married for three years now...I don’t feel that I have left my mom’s house at all. I spent quality time with them for around 10 months. I used to come over daily after breakfast, I then used to spend the whole day with mom and Sidharth used to drop me back in the evenings. So that was the period when we bonded the most. “We like going for vacations, we travel a lot you know…and we are complete shopaholics unlike our husbands who don’t like shopping at all. We also throw a lot of parties, have many get-togethers,” says Usha enthusiastically. When asked about their most memorable moments, Usha instantly replies saying, “It was after engagement when I took her to Hong-Kong and Singapore…we bonded a lot on that trip and got to know each other…our likes and dislikes…it was amazing and we had a lot of fun! Had nothing to do with house or work! We just relaxed and went shopping and spent a lot of quality time together.”

MARCH 01-15, 2011 TULIP 19

SPECIAL BONDING Aarti excitedly responds saying it was her wedding day. “It was the most memorable moment of my life…the whole ceremony was a surprise to me… it was like a fairytale wedding…everything else we had planned together… but my wedding day completely took me by surprise… I loved it…it will remain one of the most memorable moments of my life.” “During the garlanding, there was typical ethnic music arranged for which was completely awesome…I loved every moment of the day and I am sure I will cherish it for long! The atmosphere was amazing…it wasthe November winter and everything was very pleasant!” she adds. Gifts are a way of expressing love and in their case…this form of love has existed in abundance too. “We write a lot of cards for each other… mom writes very well, she loves it. Wherever mom and dad go…they always get me a lot of gifts…on my first anniversary, she got me this solitaire earring and bracelet which I wear almost every day,” Aarti says with a nostalgic smile as she recollects the moment. Usha smiles and responds saying, “On birthdays…she sets up a beautiful table with the cake and other things…which I completely adore about her. Apart from that, she has been the best gift ever.” Both of them bond like best friends, share gifts, responsibilities, happiness, work, problems and possibly everything else. What more can a man ask who is a son and a husband to such wonderful women!!! We hope they continue being the same and that their bond strengthens with every passing moment with many more events on the memory lane. Tulip wishes these exemplary ladies a wonderful afterlife!

PETS

Parrots Twittering

P

arrots are impressive, beautiful, colorful, entertaining pets to have. They make wonderful companions. The large Amazons, Macaws, and Cockatoos may impress you but considered the care they require as well as the fact that these large birds can live quite long. Parrots bond closely to their owners, and grieve and become depressed when they lose their beloved companion.

Some things you should consider: Noise: Most species as well as Quaker Parakeets, have an ear-piercing screech that most people cannot tolerate. On the good side, these birds are intelligent and entertaining pets with great talking ability. Amazons, Macaws, Cockatoos and African Greys can give you a bad reputation with neighbours due to their noise. Budgies,Lovebirds, and Parrotlets are not very loud, with no real ability to scream. A healthy parrot is a vocal parrot. They should not be punished for talking, screeching, or screaming just as child should not be punished for laughing or crying Mess: At least a third of whatever you feed your parrot will end up on the floor under the cage. Some of it is accidental, some on purpose. Besides food, there also feathers droppings everywhere. Consider sweeping part of your daily routine with a parrot in your house. Attention: Parrots need attention! They are social flock animals. A Parrot left alone in a cage for long period of time will be depressed, lethargic, untrusting animal. Parrots thrive on attention, they must have it every day whether you feel like it or not. Pet parrots must be allowed time out of their cages every day to stretch their wings, explore and spend time interacting with you. Space: Parrots require space, and lots of it! Both small and large parrots are active, playful, and curious. They need room to climb, stretch their wings, rest, preen, eat, and play with their toys Large parrots, especially Macaws and Cockatoos, require very large cages. Beside taking up space, bird cages are fairly expensive. Be sure to purchase a well made, safe, easy to clean model. Cleanliness: No bird will be happy and remain healthy in a dirty cage. Newspaper in the tray under the cage is easy to change daily. Don’t use colour pages which contain toxins. Once weekly the cage should be scrubbed clean and dried. Feeding: A bird cannot live by seed alone! A birdseed only diet causes malnutrition, illness, and shortened lifespan. Besides being nutritional food offers psychological stimulation for parrots. the bird should have a pellet or seed diet daily plus a variety of vegetables (carrots, corn broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, etc.).

Sharing your meal helps them feel closer to you, like part of the family. MARCH 01-15, 2011 TULIP 21

HEALTH

CONTRACEPTIVES, WHY? OR WHY NOT? Is the thought of getting pregnant killing your ‘on high’ status? Not to worry as we bring the solution with emergency contraceptives to make your physical affair smooth and safe! Reality We see a lot of unwanted pregnancies because of the misuse of the contraceptives. Basic problems like irregular bleeding, delayed periods, etc. People, mostly the younger generation feel that you can have sex anytime and just use emergency contraception and you’ll not get pregnant, which is not true. You will always get pregnant, if you do not have it in the correct time or correct dose. It’s no condom style, which is used to prevent pregnancy as and when required. You should use it once in 3-4 years when you really need it. They are hormones, so should never be used as they may lead to infertility. There have been cases when people have actually got pregnant even after taking an I pill. Consulting a doctor will be very beneficial.

“When pregnancies occur, disaster strikes. People now say when they’re having sex outside of marriage and get pregnant. They use this wonderful phrase, “I got pregnant by accident.” Usage Warning This question is very significant, as they are currently being totally misused due to wrong advertising. They are ‘emergency’ contraceptives and should be used ideally only if there is condom breakage, sexual assault, or carelessness or at least not more often than once in 6-8 months. They completely alter the hormonal cycle and hence should not be used as a routine method ‘’First of all the word emergency tells that it has to be used only in case of emergency.’’ 22 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

Side-effects • Failure of contraception- leading to pregnancy (If periods are missed, a pregnancy test check must be done) • Irregular Bleeding and delayed cycles particularly if more than one pill is taken during a cycle. • In some cases nausea and vomiting.’’

Myth It was also believed that a contraceptive especially the pill, would make for much better sex before marriage. Because, clearly, people could now use contraceptives within marriage and get rid of the fear of pregnancy that was dampening the spontaneous and blissful sex lives that spouses hoped that they could have. It would take the tension out of the sex life that was there because of the fear of pregnancy. And it didn’t take people long to catch on. Well, gee, if you could take fear of pregnancy out of sex within marriage, you could wipe out the fear of pregnancy out of life. ‘’They can be used as a routine contraceptive– there is no harm.’’

‘’We also thought that contraceptives would make for an enormous decrease in the number of unwanted pregnancies. Surely contraception would help people not get pregnant when they didn’t want to get pregnant.’’ Feminism has also contributed to the enthusiasm for contraceptives. Feminists believed we had to have contraceptives because women couldn’t get in the work place and find their fulfillment unless they were having fewer babies and the only way they could have fewer babies is if they had good contraceptives.

“It’s a known fact that the mother of all richness does not reside in the house of a fool.” wedding?”. So, they definitely suffer from “quantephobia”. The second is that, they definitely are such poor people who either do not understand the difference between need and want nor do they have the capacity to analyze money’s worth. But this does not mean they are dumb. It’s a known fact that the mother of all richness does not reside in the house of a fool. Neither, will she last in a place where they do not have respect and you don’t give her any ‘bhaav’. Therefore, it does make sense and proves why people flaunt what they have. They have to justify it you see. But how much will you live in this falsehood.

A

ll that Jazz truly exists in this world. But what makes it so peculiar and intriguing. Many factors present themselves. May be they have it all and so they flaunt. Or do they actually have it all to flaunt it. You don’t believe me? Yes, it’s true! Not all times do these page 3 monks possess all that they show off. I describe them as Monks. Now who is a monk? Ideally the meaning is a man/ woman who is a member of a brother/ sisterhood living in a monastery and devoted to a discipline prescribed by his/ her order. Now when I mention about these monks, they apply to all the mentioned pre requisites. They are members of the wealthood. They live in mansion which is a monas24 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

tery of their own. They have a set standard from the very pin to the pan. And they have an order that they strictly follow be it from cash to caste. So hence, they are called the rich monks. It’s quite a definition isn’t it? But along with the fame and richness comes the dangerous word called the masquerade, that they are wear, just like any one of us. It looks to me that they are more on the pretentious side, as they have to uphold all the time does not limit to the their traditions but also their standard of living. Despite of the fact that these monks are falling at light speed towards disaster, they still live that way. And a disaster fall it is. Many of them in order to stay in the Page 3 circle go up to any extent to live it up. Some of the bizarre things that have been most talked about is how a certain Richie rich does not repeat the clothes once worn. There came a situation when, this Richie rich partied so much that, the wardrobe went dry and all that the Richie monk did was rented out clothes. Now, there are two ways of reviewing this. One, that they are so much into their clan that they do not have the nerves to repeat the dress for the mere fear of being asked,” Didn’t I see you wear this BEAUTIFUL stuff in this person’s lavish

Another interesting scenario is when they showcase their work of charity. It becomes a talk from the tea table to a publicity turn table. Again here I’m not accusing them of not being true but the point is at some of the charity organizations, they come in their posh card and expensive dress, which boasts to be simple and they wear their glares be it day or night. Psychologically, they say that when people begin to wear more clothing than the regular they begin to hide away. So what are they hiding away? So we do hide don’t we? But they hide in style and glamour. And so what happens next, when they want to run for a 10K run or they support something directly or indirectly political? It’s becomes the next breaking news in all local and the national channels. Seems

“Some of the bizarre things that have been most talked about is how a certain Richie rich does not repeat the clothes once worn.”

PIECE OF LIFE like their every move is being watched or do they love being watched? And we know that these monks love to be in page 3. Talking of limelight another platform where they flaunt and go gaga is on most of the national paper’s Page 3. But have it ever come across to you why they call this section of the society Page 3? The most sexiest the most glamorous and the richest and people with split personality come here. Two sided face reminds me so much of ‘Lady Gaga’. And they probably live that way all throughout their life.

they get into this kind of living so much that sometimes they have conditioned their minds( Pavlov would have agreed to this) so much that they do not see or hear anything this empty yet noisy style of living. So what do we conclude by this, is it a real life to live or do they need to change. To one their own is the answer. This style could be right and not as well. Acceptable to a few and not to the most, this is a very subjective issue but is always scrutinized under the lens of objectivism (like

“Some people sell their soul to the devil and some people settle for the greater cause if life-called content and happiness. So, which bandwidth of life do you come?” what is happening here). Their lifestyle is one of the most desired yet ridiculed lifestyle. Contradictory as it may sound, yet their life is full of richness in the materialistic way. The question to be asked here is, are they happy? They are definitely content but is there joy in it.?

This tradition is often passed to their own children and hence you see these youngsters getting into the city’s most expensive colleges with all the gizmos and the cars. Yet, they often get caught into a whirlpool of crimes like drugs and heroines and their parents have the power and the money to get them out of their crime. And they come out clean and the next step is to portray them in a limelight and hence you see them next taking part in charity or some social work. And after

Some people sell their soul to the devil to get what they want and some people settle for the greater cause if life-called content and happiness. So, which bandwidth of life do you come?

a while one must not be amazed by the way they get back to square one. It is not that common man does not face such temptations or they face embarrassments or challenges in life. They do and we all do. The one fact that differs us from them is that a common man has no one to fear about, does not live on standards set my some set of few and does not have to worry about what to wear or how to greet. They basically live in by the hour and not in an hour glass unlike these monks. It’s a tragedy or irony, MARCH 01-15, 2011 TULIP 25

High tea

the new sensation

By Dipika Pillay

Here is calling all trendy females who love to indulge in elegant cocktails, graceful dinners or similarly sophisticated soirees. There’s a new craze in entertainment and I don’t mean The Blackberry. High tea is the new sensation and the latest ritual demanding the attention of every savvy hostess and popular socialite. The new cocktail hour, the new baby shower, the new old thing and the old new thing. If you haven’t been to high tea yet — frankly — you’re late. The history of high tea Historically ‘high tea’ was the light meal eaten at the day’s end by the weary working class in Britain. This was likely a 6pm meal, consisting of scraps from breakfast and lunch (sandwiches, sausages, soup). The meal would have be taken at a high table (as opposed to a low table) and served with — you guessed it — a pot of hot tea. In a modern light however, high tea has become a tantalizing affair served any time between mid-morning and 6pm.

Tea and Food The contemporary ritual is characterized by the serving of three types of foods presented on a three-tiered tray: savory on the bottom layer (finger sandwiches and appetizers), scones with jam and cream on the middle layer and finally, cakes, cookies and sweet treats served on the top. This dainty arrangement is served with tea (or coffee) — or for a wildly indulgent twist, champagne or sparkling wine. Offer your guests a selection of teas to include English breakfast, Earl Grey and some herbal teas (coffee should also be offered as many people prefer it). Champagne or sparkling wine can also be offered at any stage to shift the tone to be more celebratory or decadent. You could try some cucumber crackers, masala French fries and minty cheese sandwiches for the appetizers while for the sweet treats you can have cashew cookies, banana bread and green tea cup cakes. Replace crackers and biscuits with a sumptuous selection of chips, toasts and dips.

Home entertainment Create a cosy den in your home or garden with iron chairs, ottomans, low seats with cushions, pillows, mattresses and blankets. Hire some age-appropriate films and as the evening wears on encourage your guests to relax and enjoy the entertainment. You can also play some games like cookie decorating and strawberry dipping ones and give away prizes for the best one.

Table setting Tea party in the garden doesn’t have to be about plastic sauce bottles and paper napkins. You can add some sophistication to your evening using. Fresh white linen napkins, glass jars and bottles for sauces and condiments, a side table to hold excess salads, sugar and milk, a glass carafe as a water jug with slices of lemon and candles as a centerpiece.

SPECIAL

Lighting Nothing subtly screams ambience like clever lighting. For a tea party inside the house, place candles of different sizes all over the room to cast sexy wall shadows. Having it outside in the garden? Hang lanterns from the trees and fairy lights from the deck.

Music Loud hip hop or heavy-based dance music will NOT help you set the scene for a home gathering. Think chilled jazz as they arrive, background soul tunes for during food and some fun world music to get everyone going afterwards.

Decor Get guests in the mood for socializing by creating sub-areas in your entertaining space from clusters of chairs and piles of cushions. Inject splashes of colour with bunches of fresh blooms and ensure the table is set correctly.

Scents Get aromat-chic and have guests’ senses reeling! Place a basket of lavender by the front door to give them a scenty sendoff, scatter dried thyme and rosemary over the dinner table and burn vanilla oil in the bathroom in case of unforeseen smells.

Après high tea Before leaving it’s time to surprise your guests with something a little different. Given you’re moving from the kitchen to the outdoor area you’ll want to keep this as simple as possible. Try these. Sweet sorbet served frozen and presented in a chilled glass with a small garnish (strawberries and mint look great). A classic cheese board served with fruit and/or chocolate. An affogato is also an easy and elegant way to end your tea party. Make a pot of strong plunger coffee and take it to the table along with short glasses each set with a scoop of icecream and a shot of liqueur. Pour coffee over the ice-cream and serve with a teaspoon. MARCH 01-15, 2011 TULIP 27

WOMEN TALKING STRAIGHT

So what exactly are we celebrating? The myriad advances over the decade that have improved the lives of women, particularly in the developed world and developing nations like us. This fortnight, on international women’s day, is there anything left to fight for? The answer, it would seem, is a resounding yes. March 8th is International Women’s Day, when women from all over the world can celebrate their achievements in life and ponder over things that still need improvement, development or more specifically change. It’s a day of recognition of women. DIPIKA PILLAY spoke to five interesting women from different spheres and what we got are even more interesting answers. Here is the chronicleuncut and straight from their hearts. ANJU PODDAR, Artist Who is a complete woman? A mother Tell us who do you think is hard workingthe housewife or the working lady? Of course, a housewife. Which is that one women you adore and why? My mother for having complete faith in me One change you would like to see in the status of women? Financial security and some money set aside for her to pursue her personal interests apart from money spent on household expenses. This should be a mandatory allocation from the family pool. NAMITA KANODIA, Homemaker Who is a complete woman? A complete woman is so confident in her abilities that the things she makes are of professional quality. She is the mother/ wife/employee who is loved, respected and held in high esteem. This is not a title that came with the territory. This is a title this woman has earned by hard work, steadfastness, self-control and strength. She’s a woman who understands her family position and needs entirely; She’s always prepared and doesn’t back down at the slightest sign of discomfort. She is someone who can maintain a balance between profession, family and money management, personal fitness, socials and leisure. A complete woman is like the roots of her family tree. Water her with love, nurture with comfort, protect her with support and confidence and she is ready to keep the family uprooted in the hardest of weathers. Tell us who do you think is more hard working- the housewife or the working lady? Why? It entirely depends on the family, economics, location and support system. I believe housewives and working women, both are equally hard working in regard to their commitment towards work/ home as long as the housewives don’t meddle in wasting too much time over phone and TV-shows. Which is that one women you adore and why? I adore my old beautiful mother for everything she has done for the people around her and the never give up and selfless 34 TULIP MARCH 01-15, 2011

attitude even at this age. One change you would like to see in the status of women? It would be wrong of me to demand for any further changes in the status of women where the country is led by women themselves. All I’d share is a thought that when they could do it, so can we. Know your strengths, rights, and don’t give up/ surrender easily. Believe in yourself and make history. NEHA GANDHI, Working Professional What according to is a complete woman? According to me a complete woman is one who can be good in all relations, like she can be a good mother, a good daughter, a good wife, a good daughter-in-law, a good sister and also a one who can keep a balance between both home and work a d also socialize at the same time. Tell us who do you think is more hard working- the housewife or the working lady? According to me, a working lady is more hardworking as she has to take care of her work place as well as home. Which is that one women you adore and why? I adore ma mother as she has taught me all the good things in life, how to deal with different people n basically she has been with me through thick and thin. She is my inspiration and I want to be like her. One change you would like to see in the status of women? I just want that boys or men should stop looking at girls with a bad eye. Girls should never be under-estimated. DISHA GIRGLANI, PR & Entrepreneur Who is a complete woman? I believe that just being a woman is a gift. We are such wonderful unique creatures. We have spirit, beauty, patience, abilities, time-management, and humor like no other. However, being a woman can be extremely stressful. Women, make the most of your lives. You have one life to live and it’s not a soap opera! It’s a gift and you should be enjoying it! Just say NO to stress! Tell us who do you think is more hard working- the housewife or the working lady?

A woman’s completeness and value is not measured by the amount of money she can bring home, but her industriousness whether she works from inside, outside or both sides of the home. An industrious woman spends time seeking out good deals for her family, not at the shops buying several pairs of shoes. She spends her free time cooking and freezing food to save on energy, not using energy by plopping in front of the TV screen. A woman who is complete will use the time her babies are asleep to manage the accounts, settle the bills and catch up with the news rather than gossip on the phone with nosy neighbours. A complete woman makes gains for her family even if she does not earn money directly. She is wise in what she uses and what she spends. She knows how to cook and doesn’t have to depend on TV dinners to feed her family. If she does not know how to prepare a particular dish, she’s not afraid to learn. She doesn’t think it’s cute telling the world she can’t cook. She’s strong, she’s learned, she’s dependable and she’s able. You can’t but respect her abilities. Of course she can cook. And she’ll teach her husband and children too. Not only will she have enough food for her family, but in her wisdom in the way she spends, this woman will constantly share with people worse off than her family. She makes an extra portion for the elderly neighbours and is always the first person to take food for friends who’re sick or confined in bed. Which is that one women you adore and why? Oprah Winfrey the American television host, actress, producer, and philanthropist, best known for her self-titled, multi-award winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century and the greatest black philanthropist in American history. Also, she was once the world’s only black billionaire. Though criticized for unleashing confession culture and promoting controversial self-help aids, she is often praised for overcoming adversity to become a benefactor to others. From 2006 to 2008, her support of Barack Obama, by one estimate, delivered over a million votes in the close 2008 Democratic primary race. “THE OPAH EFFECT” is simply phenomenal! One change you would like to see in the status of women? Though it is gradually rising, the female literacy rate in India is lower than the male literacy rate. Compared to boys, far fewer girls are enrolled in the schools, and many of them drop out. Police records show high incidence of crimes against women in India. The National Crime Records Bureau reported in 1998 that the growth rate of crimes against women would be higher than the population growth rate by 2010. Earlier many cases were not registered with the police due to the social stigma attached to rape and molestation cases. Official statistics show that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of reported crimes against women. I would like to see women getting more educated and aware of their surroundings. Also, I would like women to be more independent, strong and be able to protect themselves and their loved ones from any dangers that may come their way. NAMRATA SINGH, Student-Liverpool University Who is a complete woman? Well, in my opinion you can’t really pin-point and exactly say who deserves to be a complete woman. I feel that every woman in her own right is complete whether she’d be a housewife or a working woman. In the end, both are substantially equal in their own ways.

VIEW POINT

Tell us who do you think is more hard working- the housewife or the working lady? A housewife for instance has numerous amounts of chores to get done. So what if she stays at home and spends the whole day indoors? She still has tremendous amounts of work to get done, especially if she has got children to take care of. We all know how hard it is to handle kids as well as household chores. If you think that a woman who spends her day at home has fewer things to get done, well, then your surely mistaken! A working woman on the other hand, has tones of work to get done too. Apart from taking care of the household chores, shes got her work to get done at her office. In many ways, she’s got a bit more to do. Apart from her office work, she has to do household work. This only applies if she does the work herself if shes got someone helping her at home (like a maid/servant), then it doesn’t really count. Which is that one women you adore and why? My mother, for setting me an example on how to live life without any complaints One change you would like to see in the status of women? I personally feel that a woman (regardless of her being a working woman or a housewife) should get the credit shes deserves, firstly for being a woman herself, and secondly for handling herself in any given situation. I feel that every human being should regard and respect a woman for who she is. The world that we live in today has come a long way, and I feel that woman are now being given a lot more RESPECT and credit for their work - at home or at their office. This itself is a huge change for women. They have the right to be free and to give their opinions whether at work or at home. Being a woman myself, i don’t believe that we are a stronger race or that we should get more rights. I believe in equality for both men and women and so far we’re a working progress and will get there; considering how far we’ve come (from the past to this day and age).

VERDICT- Join a run, watch a parade, go to a cooking session, buy a book, get a discounted massage, attend a seminar - several different types of events honouring the achievements of women will take place in Hyderabad to mark International Women’s Day. Tulip encourages you to get involved in local events and to celebrate the women in your lives. Of course, if all these activities don’t appeal, you could always take the day off. But do know that globally as well as locally, there is plenty to think about. Today and every day. So make a difference. It is amazing how mothers are so wonderfully giving, caring and loving. Their love is unconditional and forever. And once they forgive, they really forget. It is remarkable how women manage to hear you out for hours. They never pass judgments. Never say you are wrong (even if you have behaved like the worst jerk in the world). And when you ask for their opinion they give it without managing to make you feel a worm. The sensuality combined with nurturing, the naughtiness combined with caring, the vivacity coupled with quiet understanding. It is a heady mix and man, it is very intoxicating.

Self knowledge is hard to come by. I am reserved and sometimes shy. Mostly I am honest, at least to myself. Tell us about your venture into modelling and acting? I think it was meant to be. I was on stage for the first time at age three. I had to walk on and walk off- I refused to get off stage. They had to send a teacher to get me. So looks like I loved acting from the start. What else would you be if you weren’t an actor? As a kid, if I went to see a concert, I wanted to be the singer. If my parents took me to cricket match, I wanted to be the batsman. Whatever I saw or read, I would start building fantasies around that. So acting was the natural choice- I can be whatever I want to be, without restriction, it’s amazing. I don’t really think I wanted anything different. (Laughs). What are the future projects you are working on? COVER STORY

Are you a fitness freak? This year I have made up my mind to be very fit. I am already a Yoga enthusiast and I’ll start running as soon as I finish the film I am doing now. I’ve already knocked off a few kgs but now I want to achieve peak fitness. What kind of food you eat? I eat everything in moderation. I love Thai food. I eat only fish, no other meat and no carbs after 7pm. Make up products you swear by? I always use Olay, that has SPF-15. Other than that, I have an obsession with mascara. I really like one by Givenchy that has a round brush and reaches even the tiniest lashes. Otherwise makeup is a professional hazard. Any homemade beauty tip you follow? Well... I think happiness is the easiest homemade product. One can make it anywhere, anytime and it makes one beautiful at all times!

What is your personal style statement? Comfort is most critical to me. I like natural fabrics. My new obsession is woven fabrics. I love vintage fabrics and styles. Is there any similarity between your real life and reel life character? There is no similarity whatsoever. I am not yet a mother but I played one in Taare Zameen Par. I was a straying, bored, rich wife in Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and a psychiatrist in a new film I’m doing. So there’s no similarity at all. Reel characters are the product of a writer and director’s imagination. What quality a person must have to grab your attention? A sense of humour and basic decency. I really appreciate people who have an eye for detail. What is your dream date like? A long walk on a cool crisp evening by a river where we catch some fish and grill it on fire and lie back in the grass afterwards. Describe yourself in three words? Work in progress. The most interesting person you have met so far? I married him! My husband Sanjay. He’s imaginative and very funny. What kind of role do you see yourself doing? A biopic about Madhubala would be lovely or the story of Indira Gandhi. How do you find Mumbai? Crowded and noisy but I love the energy. It’s the only city in India that really works professionally. Where do you see yourself after 10 years? I don’t know about tomorrow, how can I say about 10 years. Anyway life has better plans than me, I only have dreams. Hopefully I’ll still be making movies. Anything you would like to tell your fans? Things are twice created, once in the mind and then in the world outside, so go ahead and dream up the best life you can think of. (Winks).
