FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK There is much more to August than mere festivals like Rakhi or celebrating Friendship Day, it’s the holy month of Ramadan, every citizen of Hyderabad looks forward to. Therefore, this issue hallmarks an article on this much awaited festival, with quotes on how people celebrate with family and friends. Wishing all the readers, a very happy Independence Day, Ramadan, Friendship Day and Rakhi Celebrations. Every Tollywood buff is talking about the beautiful Taapsee Pannu these days. Although attaining immense success and winning hearts of many around, she remains modest and on a candid conversation, she talks about her modeling days, career as a Tollywood actress and her forthcoming, much heard about, Bollywood flick. This issue also features interviews of A K Khan, talking about his responsibilities, as the Commissioner of Hyderabad, his sheer passion towards sports and personal life; Smita Dugar, a finalist at MasterChef India, sharing her culinary tips, while she also mentions how the journey on becoming a chef set out – an avocation, which later became her profession and of course a few easy-to-make, yet nutritious Continental dishes for the readers. It was such an extra-ordinary, (or should I term it ‘lucky’) coincidence, getting an opportunity to confer with the MD of Jordan Tourism, barely a week after I made an article on Jordan, for this issue. Fortunate enough to hear more interesting aspects, more opinions and those not-so-easily-found reviews about tourism at Jordan and the must visit places for someone, even for a 2/3 day stay there. Sitting over a cup of hot coffee, I gained the best part of the conversation, when he expressed his sheer delight on talking to Tulip. While exchanging the last words, he also mentioned about the world’s largest natural spa – Dead Sea. I must admit, it’s always good knowing more and deep about something which you already know – you just can’t help but to experience it and knowledge is like an ocean, the deeper you go, the more you explore. Well, just like the previous ones, this issue of August features just what the readers want.

Three things I have learnt from this issue One of the most endearing panoramas of life, are the times we spend with our friends. When looked back, these will be the moments, we remember and would treasure forever. Who wouldn’t love a piece of classic painting? The age of Impressionism influenced many around and transformed the way people followed art. Being fit is a persistent challenge and healthy lifestyle brings forth happiness, therefore, a rundown on a few simple, yet effective steps in Aerobics and its advantages.

BEYONCE KNOWLES Wants to be remembered as a Legend You’ll never hear Beyonce complaining about her weight or whining for attention. That’s because, unlike Khloe Kardashian and so many other celebrities, this star possesses actual talent. She also has an admirable view on life, telling the latest issue of complex - ‘Whenever I feel bad, I use that feeling to motivate me to work harder. I only allow myself one day to feel sorry for myself. People who complain really get on my nerves. When I am not feeling my best I ask myself - ‘What are you gonna do about it? ‘I use the negativity to fuel the transformation into a better me.’ The artist is in the prime of her career, of course, but she also touches on her legacy in this interview. How does she want to be remembered? – ‘I just want my legacy to be great music. Someone who was a risk taker and someone who had songs that struck conversation and emotion.’

Matt, on Brad and Angelina

Matt Damon feels sorry for his high-profile pals like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie because they are prisoners of fame. The movie star feels blessed that he hasn’t become a tabloid target, despite his success, because he’s allowed to go out for a walk without it becoming an international incident. In a recent interview Damon said – ‘I have friends who are like prisoners. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, for instance. They can’t just go someplace. I am really lucky, because I have the best of both worlds. I do the work that I love and need, but don’t need paramilitary troops to protect me when I walk out my front door.’ And he credits Luciana, his wife of eight years, for keeping him out of the public eye – ‘Ever since I found my wife and we had children, my whole life revolves around that. It gave my life a dramatic change in direction. ‘I am not as crazy as most of the other stars. I don’t really know why, probably because I married a woman who isn’t an actress. And we live in New York.’ As long as we don’t show up in typical tourist spots, we can walk the streets without being noticed. New Yorkers are very cool, they don’t flip out if they see me.

MICHELLE OBAMA On extreme make over

First lady Michelle Obama will appear on Extreme Makeover - Home Edition as a part of her ongoing joining forces initiative to help military families. The White House made the announcement today Monday. Michelle will tape the episode with a military family, the Marshalls, in Fayetteville, N.C., later this week. The show will feature Barbara Marshall, a 15-year Navy veteran who started a home called ‘The Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House.’ That establishment gives homeless female vets a place to stay and other aid. Hard to think of a better cause for Obama or anyone else to support! The Extreme Makeover team will be building a new jubilee house in this week’s taping. The episode of the ABC show is scheduled to air in October. This is not Michelle Obama’s first stop to promote joining forces. Last month, the First Lady taped a special appearance on iCarly on Nickelodeon. That episode is most probably slated to air in next year January.

B O L L Y W O O D

Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez seems to be everywhere in the news and gossip columns these days. Her last release Murder 2 has turned out to be a super hit with her new bold avatar being liked by her fans and the latest rumors doing rounds are that something is cooking between the hot beauty and her Houseful 2 Director, Sajid Khan. Jacqueline recently split with her boy friend who was a Prince from the Middle East and sources attribute this breakup to her growing closeness with Sajid and if reports are to be believed, then some people on the sets of Houseful 2 even refer to Miss Fernandez as Bhabi. Whether or not, the two share a romantic alliance with each other, will come out soon. Jacqueline said –‘Housefull 2 is going into a completely different zone. You won’t see any actress from the film in a bikini. It is very family oriented.’

DON 2

Catch the deadly look of Shahrukh Khan Farhan Khan had most intelligently apprehended the success of his Don and had left the movie at an ending which left it open for a sequel and sure enough Don 2, set to release on December 23, is the most awaited movie of the year. The original one had ended with Roma (Priyanka Chopra) realizing that Don had survived and it was Vijay who had met his end. So, the sequel takes its lead here and in Don 2, SRK will be seen chasing all those who had betrayed him. You can easily anticipate a lot of high-energy action in this flick. While SRK, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Om Puri carry on from the original one, Lara Dutta and Kunal Kapoor will be fresh additions to the sequel. Check out the killing look of SRK on the posters of Don 2. Shanrukh Khan said - ‘I am excited to be shooting in Berlin, I like the darkness of the buildings, the starkness of the winter, people dressed in overcoats and wearing mufflers and dark glasses and black cars going around.’

SANJAY AND SALMAN Co-host Bigg Boss 5

Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt have shared screen space in movies such as Saajan, Chal Mere Bhai and recently were seen together in a shot in Ready. Now the duo will be seen together on the small screen hosting the popular reality show Bigg Boss 5. While Salman was the host of Bigg Boss 4 earlier, this is the first time Sanjay Dutt would be seen hosting the reality show. The audiences would like it, even if they get to see the duo create magic on the small screen for a few episodes. Bigg Boss - Season 4, which was hosted by Salman Khan, was viewed by over 90 million viewers from across the country and the finale episode had generated a TVR of 6.7. Bigg Boss, dominated so far by a single personality, will also have two anchors for the first time. Both Salman and Sanjay are all praises for each other. Talking about Sanjay, Sallu states that the viewers will enjoy a ‘differential appeal with the presence of Sanjay’, while the ‘Munnabhai’ star going gaga about Salman’s anchoring in season 4, expressed, ‘I thought he was mind-blowing with his sense-of-humor and inimitable style.’ 16 AUGUST, 2011

KAJAL AGGARWAL Feels superstitious

Kajal, who is acting with Ajay Devgn in Singham, believes in a unique superstition. She thinks that the colour white is lucky for her. Her claim is that in whichever south movie she has worn a white coloured outfit in her introductory shot, the movie has gone on to be a success. In Singham too, the actress was given a white coloured salwar-kameez for her first shot. The filmmakers shouldn’t have a problem with that and some of them might want her drenched too! Kajal Agarwal is now, these days is being confident about her Bollywood movie Singham opposite Ajay Devgan. She is also very confident the film will do in Box Office. She is getting nice reviews to the song Sathiya where she romances Ajay. She wore sari in this song and looks lovely.

MARK WEBBER

To remain with RedBull Mark Webber has no doubts, he wants to remain at Red Bull next year despite his recent fallout with team principal Christian Horner. The latest team orders saga that unfolded at the British Grand Prix might have made Webber think twice about remaining at a marque that again appeared to show bias towards Sebastian Vettel. Closing in on Vettel over the closing laps at Silverstone as he was clearly faster than the world champion at that stage, Webber chose to ignore instructions from his race engineer to hold his position. An attempted pass on Vettel on the penultimate lap in a bid to take second place forced Horner onto the radio, telling the Australian to maintain the gap. Clear-the-air talks followed during which both men aired their point of view, agreeing to disagree as Webber wanted to fight to the end, whilst Horner was eager to avoid a potential crash. Whichever view is taken, Webber’s decision to act for himself and not for the good of the team could have been detrimental to his future.

BARCA CONFIRMS SANCHEZ € 26 million transfer

S P O R T S

Barcelona have confirmed an agreement has been reached over the signing of Udinese forward Alexis Sanchez on a 26 million euro transfer. The Chile international will undergo a medical examination, before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract. Sanchez, 22, has been heavily linked with the European Cup winners for the majority of the summer, but there was also interest from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City. Barca coach Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration of the pacey winger and has now finally got his man after negotiations between the two clubs. A statement said - ‘Udinese and FC Barcelona have reached a definitive agreement for the transfer of Alexis Sanchez. The medical, signing of his contract for the next five years and presentation will take place on Monday.’ Sanchez spent three seasons in Udinese and scored 12 goals in 31 appearances in Serie-A last term to help the club finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League. MONKEYAS A PET

Monkeys are one of the most intelligent ones on earth. You may think a monkey would make a great pet, but this is not the case. Dogs and cats have evolved for thousands of years to be domestic pets to man. Monkeys are wild. They will never adapt to being in a home. It is very expensive to keep a primate happy and healthy... HOUSING Monkeys are agile, smart and have nimble fingers. Escaping out of a cage is not a big task for them. Make sure the cage is constructed of strong materials. Do not underestimate the strength or the intelligence of a monkey. The cage needs to be big. The bigger the cage the better it is. The height should not be less

The branches and plants should be changed occasionally to provide variety. Monkeys are intelligent and need a lot of variety. Please avoid use of toxic plants and branches. Monkeys love to bathe, splash and play. If you can incorporate a pond into the cage your monkey would love you for it.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

than six feet. Monkeys feel secure in a high cage. Thousands have to be spend to build a secure and safe primate cage. Do not use anything less than a 12 gauge wire.

A monkey that doesn’t bite is extremely rare and their teeth are sharp. Monkeys are impulsive, unpredictable and excitable. A monkey can never be toilet trained. Monkeys should not be left lonely. They are social animals and socializing with you is not enough. They will A heated sleeping area must be feel lonely, become sick or may even die... included. If they feel cold they must have a place to go which is warm. If the cage is built inside, make sure it is in a well-ventilated area. Monkeys need light to survive, so provide them with a vita-lites (replicates natural sunlight.) Primates need this light for their skeletal development. The floor of the cage should be wire, high enough off the ground so that the monkey can’t reach the food that has dropped to the ground. Another reason is, it needs to be high so that it can be raked and cleaned easily. The floor can also be cement or linoleum for easy disinfecting and cleaning.

Variety is an important key to feeding a primate. Feed him a commercial primate diet. Supplement the primate diet with fruits, cooked vegetables like carrots, raw vegetables, seeds, nuts, wheat bread and boiled eggs. Feed the monkey - insects like crickets, grasshoppers and mealworms. Wild primates feed on fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, insects, lizards, rodents and small birds.

HEALTH Monkeys need a complete health check-up very often. They need their TB test to protect their health. Also needed are a parasite examination and a complete blood screening. Find out the vaccination requirements for monkeys.

A meditative take on growing up, becoming a man, taking responsibility for one’s actions, it has the courage to go for long periods with no dialogue. A scene where Hrithik Roshan does a Finding Nemo and another, where the boys discover the joys of sky diving is all about seizing the moment and living for the day. Cliches all, but shot with such sisterly care that the boys flourish in the female gaze. Naturally the trip to Spain is not just a trip. It is a journey of the soul. There’s Kabir whose family runs a contruction company. There’s Imran, a copywriter who is a poet in his spare time (and fortunately writes Javed Akhtar style poems). And there’s Arjun, a stockbroker who lives in London and has trouble with commitment. So that’s Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan. And naturally the love of a free spirited good woman Katrina Kaif will cure Hrithik of his permanent state of melancholy.

Lots of manly tears. Even more bare chests on the beach. And many more scenes of drinking wine and tossing back shots (where the women give as good as the men get). It’s all very glamorous. And very seductive. Yet the film pulls you in, partly because of the frank, unvarnished performances by its leads. Hrithik is lovely as Arjun, shorn of the pretence that his recent performances have shown. Farhan is sensitive, soulful and perfectly capable of reading out his father’s poetry. And Abhay for a change is playing the rich brat who is virtually press ganged into marrying his family friend Kalki Koechlin, giving a perfectly posed performance as a spolit little madam. My favourite moment of the film?

R E V I E W

he film is gentle, taking time out to look at horses running in the meadows, feel the wind the air, swim with the fish underwater. All that male beauty may be a little manipulative and the plot is a little contrived - three adventure sports to test your courage - but the story keeps you engaged.

M O V I E

Cracking jokes on teachers, fights over girlfriends, silly word games, bare chests, ripped muscles, streaked hair, glossy looking and a movie, beautifully written. I must admit, by the time I finished watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, I was convinced there is nothing more beautiful then friendship - the moments you share with your friends will always remain special.

The showy moment when Hrithik discovers the meaning of life with one deep sea dive with Katrina Kaif, Farhan confronts his pot smoking ageing painter dad - may not tell you who he is, but it’s a lovely piece of casting and even when Abhay decides he has to run with the bulls.

A 19TH CENTURY ART MOVEMENT....

A

19th-century art movement that originated with a group of French artists, sometimes also referred as - Optical Realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. The term Impressionists came, as artists embraced the nickname a conservative critic used to ridicule the whole movement. Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), common, ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience and unusual visual angles.

A R T

Children On A Farm (1887) - Camille Pissarro

Bridge At Villenueve-la-Garenne (1872) - Alfred Sisley Girl With A Hoop (1885) - Pierre Auguste enoir

Woman With A Parasol (1875) - Claude Monet

The principal Impressionist painters were Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, Armand Guillaumin and Frédéric Bazille, who worked together, influenced each other and exhibited together independently. Edgar Degas and Paul Cézanne also painted in an Impressionist style for a time in the early 1870s. Radicals in their time, early Impressionists violated the rules of academic painting. They began by constructing their pictures from freely brushed colours which took precedence over lines and contours, following the example of painters such as Eugène Delacroix. They also painted realistic scenes of modern life and often painted outdoors. Although the emergence of Impressionism in France happened at a time when a number of other painters, including the Italian artists known as the Macchiaioli and Winslow Homer in the United States, were also exploring plein-air painting, the Impressionists developed new techniques which were specific to their styles. 32 AUGUST, 2011

NEO IMPRESSIONISM (1880 and beyond) The term Neo-Impressionism refers to a pictorial technique where color pigments are no longer mixed either on the palette or directly on canvas, but instead placed as small dots side by side. Mixing of colors takes place from a suitable distance, in the observer’s eye, as an optical mixture. In the early 1880s, French painter Georges Seurat studied writings on color theory by French chemists Eugène Chevreul (1786-1889), Charles Henry, and American physicist Ogden Rood and invented a new painting technique that he named ‘separation of color’ or ‘Divisionism’, the main advantage of which is to give a greater vibrancy of color. ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’ was first exhibited at the last Impressionist Group Exhibition of 1886 where Pissarro forced the presence of Seurat and Paul Signac - who will later become the main propagandist of Divisionism - on Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Caillebotte who would retire from the exhibition. Other famous Neo-Impressionists include – Paul Signac, Charles Angrand, Henry Edmond Cross, Georges Lemmen, Theo Van Rysselberghe and others.

onathan Kellerman’s novels of psychological drama and criminal detection make the capital of dreams a living, breathing character in all its glamour and infamy. That storied history of fame, seduction, scandal, and murder looms large in Mystery, as Alex Delaware finds himself drawn into a twisting, shadowy whodunit that’s pure L.A. noir and vintage Kellerman. The closing of their favorite romantic rendezvous, the Fauborg Hotel in Beverly Hills, is a sad occasion for longtime patrons Alex Delaware and Robin Castagna. And gathering one last time with their fellow faithful habitués for cocktails in the gracious old venue makes for a bittersweet evening. But even more poignant is a striking young woman, alone and enigmatic among the revelers, waiting in vain in elegant attire and dark glasses that do nothing to conceal her melancholy. Alex can’t help wondering what her story is and whether she’s connected to the silent, blacksuited bodyguard lingering outside the hotel. Two days later, Alex has even more to contemplate when police detective Milo Sturgis comes seeking his psychologist associate’s insights about a grisly homicide. To Alex’s shock, the brutalized victim is the same beautiful woman whose lonely hours sipping champagne at the Fauborg may have been her last. But with a mutilated body and no DNA match, she remains as mysterious in death as she seemed in life. And even when a tipster’s sordid revelation finally cracks the case open, the dark secrets that spill out could make Alex and Milo’s best efforts to close this horrific crime not just impossible but fatal.

4 Charles Street presents some of the real issues of today’s ever changing world, where life is not quite as simple as it was many years ago. We all take on more responsibilities now than men and women used to and there is a lot more to juggle in modern life. In the book, the main female character is faced with trying not to lose her house or business after a break-up with a long term live in boyfriend and trying to untangle their commingled financial interests. Once apart, the responsibility of keeping it all together, both her art gallery and her home, falls entirely on her. To try and make ends meet and not lose her house, she decides to take in 3 roommates and the fun begins. A fresh faced freckled recent college graduate is the first to sign up, a sweet young girl, who immerses herself in internet dating, sometimes to a frightening degree. The second addition to the group is a somewhat mysterious divorced man, recovering from a bad divorce, with an irresistible seven year old son. And one by one the mysterious circumstances in his life are revealed. And the third resident of the house is a famous, recently widowed female chef, who loves the other residents of the house, uses them as a testing lab for her fabulous gourmet meals, and unexpectedly finds love with a well known French chef, proving that ‘love has no age’. The ages in the book span from 22 to 60, their previous life histories are as varied. It’s a book that touches on some very contemporary themes.

It is important to feel the pulse of the audience, as each has different voice, tone and excitement, compared to the rest. I personally love playing Retro and I do it as often as I can, as it’s my favourite genre. 70s and 80s were the times of wonderful music from many artists and people who have managed to hear them all new, were lucky. Among the modern crowd now, not many know artists and songs of those times, so I would love to reintroduce and bring back those good old days of memorable music, back to audience of today. Beyond this, I would love to play House, Hip-Hop and Bollywood tracks.’ Anand had come a long way, with music as his journey and destination. People see success in his smile! BREATHTAKING

JORDAN Anecdotes of Middle-East...

By Aditya Tej

While considering traditional cuisines, persisting rituals, raw and serene natural surroundings or even modern lifestyle, Jordan provides the best of everything it has been preserving preciously, right from its rich history, ancient monuments and landscapes to world famous tourist destinations. Below presented are a few most visited holiday spots...

PETRA - A Red Rose City As Old As Time The giant red mountains and vast mausoleums of a departed race have nothing in common with modern civilization and ask nothing of it except to be appreciated at their true value - as one of the greatest wonders ever wrought by nature and man. Although much has been written about Petra, nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It has also described it as ‘one of the most precious properties of man’s cultural heritage.’ Petra was chosen by the BBC as one of ‘the 40 places you have to see before you die.’ It is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra is the treasure of ancient world, hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains, boasting incomparable scenes which make it the most majestic and imposing ancient site still-standing nowadays. It has been said ‘perhaps there is nothing in the world that resembles it,’ actually, for sure, there is nothing in the world that resembles it. The rock-carved rose-red city of Petra is full of mysterious charm, it was designed to strike wonder into all who entered it. The approach through a kilometer long, cool and gloom chasm (or Siq) a long narrow gorge whose steeply rising sides all but obliterate the sun, provides a dramatic contrast with the magic to come. Mr. Nayef H Alfayaz, the Managing Director for Jordan Tourism Board, recently visited the city of Hyderabad. On an interview with Tulip, he said : ‘Jordan offers the best of its nature and environment. The Dead Sea here is the largest natural spa in the whole world. Due to extreme salt concentration, people will naturally float over the surface of the water and they never drown, because the high salt content makes you buoyant. It is 33% more saline than any other sea in the world. The Dead Sea is filled with minerals like – Calcium, Iodine, Bromide, Potassium and many others. The shores of Dead Sea make the lowest elevation on Earth. The unique salt in the Dead Sea treats acne, psoriasis, hives, cellulite, dry skin, dandruff, stress, muscle aches and more.’

36 AUGUST, 2011

Suddenly the gorge opens into a natural square dominated by Petra’s most famous monument, the treasury of Al-Khazneh, whose intricately carved facade glows in the dazzling sun. The Petra basin boasts over 800 individual monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples, arched gateways and colonnaded streets, which were mostly carved from the kaleidoscopic sandstone by the technical and artistic genius of its inhabitants. Petra sights are at their best in early morning and late afternoon, when the sun warms the multicolored stones, you can view the majesty of Petra as it was seen first when discovered in 1812 after being lost by the 16th century for almost 300 years.

Without a doubt the world’s most amazing place, the Jordan rift valley is a dramatic, beautiful landscape, at the Dead Sea, over 400m (1,312 ft.) below sea level. The lowest point on the face of the earth, this vast stretch of water receives a number of incoming rivers, including the River Jordan. The Dead Sea is flanked by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost other-worldly beauty. One of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world, the Jordanian east coast of the Dead Sea has evolved into a major hub of both religious and health and wellness tourism in the region. A series of good roads, excellent hotels with spa and fitness facilities, as well as archaeological and spiritual discoveries make this region as enticing to today’s international visitors as it was to kings, emperors, traders, prophets and pilgrims in antiquity. The leading attraction at the Dead Sea is the warm, soothing, super salty water itself – ten times saltier than sea water and rich in chloride salts. The unusually warm, incredibly buoyant and mineral-rich waters have attracted visitors since ancient times, including King Herod the Great and the beautiful Egyptian Queen - Cleopatra. All of whom have luxuriated in the Dead Sea’s rich, black, stimulating mud and floated effortlessly on their backs while soaking up the water’s healthy minerals along with the gently diffused rays of the Jordanian sun.

JORDAN VALLEY AND DEAD SEA

DESSERT CASTLES Jordan’s desert castles are beautiful examples of both early Islamic art and architecture, stand testament to a fascinating era in the country’s rich history. They are recognized as castles because of their imposing stature, the desert complexes actually served various purposes as caravan stations, agriculture and trade centres, resort pavilions and outposts which helped distant rulers forge ties with local Bedouins. Crusader castle of Ajlun is a splendid sight with a fascinating warren of towers, chambers, galleries and staircases to explore, while its hilltop position offers stunning views of the Jordan Valley. Umm Qais boasts impressive ancient remains, such as the stunning black basalt theatre, the basilica and adjacent courtyard strewn with nicely carved black sarcophagi, the colonnaded main street and a side street lined with shops, an underground mausoleum, two baths, a nymphaeum, a city gate and the faint outlines of what was a massive hippodrome. ‘The City of Mosaics,’ Madaba is best known for its spectacular Byzantine and

Umayyad mosaics, is home to the famous 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the holy land. With two million pieces of coloured stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. Other mosaic masterpieces found in the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and the Archaeological Museum, depict a rampant profusion of flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing and farming.

JERASH - A Rome Away From Rome

AQABA – Jordan’s Red Sea Resort

A close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations in Jordan, is the ancient city of Jerash, which boasts an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years. The city’s golden age came under Roman rule, during which time it was known as Gerasa,

Aqaba is a fun place. It is a microcosm of all the good things Jordan has to offer, including a fascinating history with some outstanding sites, excellent hotels and activities, superb visitor facilities, good shopping, and welcoming, friendly people, who enjoy nothing more than making sure their visitors have a good time. Aqaba is a great place to stay if you are planning to visit Wadi Rum. Day trips can easily be organized and

and the site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash reveals a fine example of the grand, formal provincial Roman urbanism that is found throughout the Middle East, comprising paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

because the distance is short, you will have more time to spend at the site. Here, the tourists can swim with friendly sea turtles and dolphins as they dart amongst the schools of multi-coloured fish. Night dives reveal the nocturnal sea creatures, crabs, lobsters and shrimp, as they search for a midnight snack.

The Valley Of The Moon The magnificent landscape of Wadi Rum is a must-see for any visitor to Jordan. This is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here, it is the weather and winds which have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers. A maze of monolithic rockscapes, rise up from the desert floor to heights of 1,750m, creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. Hikers can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces and explore the canyons and water holes to discover 4000-year-old rock drawings and the many other spectacular treasures this vast wilderness holds in store. When visiting Wadi Rum, remember to bring something warm to wear at night as temperatures can vary from a daytime average of 32°C down to 4°C at night.

A Journey Back In Time An ancient town, As-Sult was once the most important settlement in the area between the Jordan Valley and the Eastern Desert. These splendid yellow sandstone buildings incorporate a variety of local and European styles.

Typically, they have domed roofs, interior courtyards and characteristic tall, arched windows. Perhaps the most beautiful is the Abu Jaber mansion, built between 1892 and 1906, which has frescoed ceilings, painted by Italian artists, and is reputed to be the finest example of a 19th century merchant house in the region. Take a walk around the old town and explore the narrow streets. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes as the town is quite hilly and there are many steps. During the summertime be sure to wait until the end of the day to explore. 38 AUGUST, 2011

GOING UNDER THE

KNIFE

In this world of enchantment and fashion, we have witnessed models and actresses opting for cosmetic and facial surgeries. Besides, this has now turned usual among ordinary people. But more than just a change in the look, it seems a necessity, as their professions demand it. Let us have a look at a few after-effects / advantages of surgeries and how a few Bollywood celebrities have transformed themselves into how they always wanted to look. Is Cosmetic Surgery For You -

Cosmetic Surgery has benefits, but if you are considering this, then it is important to keep your expectations realistic. When you are trying to figure out whether or not cosmetic surgery is for you, - the first thing to keep in mind is that although surgery may be able to change the aspect of your body or appearance that makes you self-conscious, it won’t suddenly solve all of your problems. The next thing you should think about when you are considering cosmetic surgery is whether or not you think that you will be able to deal with a result that isn’t exactly what you had envisioned. This is the reality of plastic surgery. You can give your surgeon an idea of what you would like, but you never have a guarantee on what the exact result will be. So if you’re considering plastic surgery the problem should be serious enough that you can honestly tell yourself that any change will be a good change. Another important Priyanka Chopra thing to keep in mind when you are asking yourself, ‘Is cosmetic surgery for me?’ Often the recovery process after any type of cosmetic surgery can be quite painful and you will likely be out of commission for at least a week. You should be prepared for stitches, bruising and discomfort. If you are clinically depressed, diabetic, have heart trouble or a substance abuse problem cosmetic surgery is probably not for you. Before you make the decision about whether or not cosmetic surgery is right for you it is a good idea to go in for a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon and ask them to thoroughly explain the procedures which they think would benefit you including the surgery, the risks, the benefits and which sort of result would best suit you. Armed with this information you will have a much clearer picture of whether or not you are ready for cosmetic surgery.

Plan Before Once you have made the decision to have plastic surgery there are some things that you should be prepared for, this includes pre-operative consultation, preparation as well as post-operative recovery expectations. Before you undergo surgery be sure that all of your questions have been answered either by other people you know, who have gone through the same procedure or by your surgeon so that you can feel confident before, during and after your procedure. Make sure you have booked at least a week off work. Everyone heals differently but a week should allow you a good amount of time to heal and become accustomed to your transformation. Ensure that you eat healthy and keep up a moderate exercise regime before your surgery. A diet relatively free of toxins and high in fiber and vitamins is always a good idea to ensure that your body is in shape and able to withstand the trauma of surgery. The healthier you are the faster you will recover.

After Surgery After surgery you should allow yourself, time to get used to your transformation. Once the swelling goes down you will probably be thrilled by the results of your surgery, but don’t think that you will look stunning immediately following your surgery. Make sure that you don’t have any obligations immediately following your surgery. If you have children, explain to them that you will be out of commission while you heal and make sure that you have someone around to help you out in the days immediately following surgery. If you were self-conscious and embarrassed by your body before surgery you can definitely expect to have a refurbished sense of self-esteem once you see the results of your surgery. Many people become more outgoing and personable after surgery because of the confidence they gain from their transformation. The most important thing to remember before and after surgery is that plastic surgery is a personal decision you have made for yourself, not for the people around you. Embrace your decision and the newfound confidence you gain. 40 AUGUST, 2011

The concrete effects of plastic surgery will differ, depending on the person and the procedure but there are a few things that each person can expect after coming directly out of plastic surgery. The first thing that most people will notice when they come out of surgery is that they are bruised, bandaged and swollen. Most plastic surgery requires that the patient be given general anesthetic so most people wake up after surgery feeling groggy and or nauseous. Some people wake up in pain and others have sore throats and are extremely thirsty, it varies. Usually it takes two or three hours to recover from the effects of anesthetic.

Effects of Plastic Surgery -

The more the anesthetic wears off, the more pain you will likely be in, but the pain will dull as you begin to heal and most surgeons will prescribe pain medication for the first few days after surgery.

Your doctor is likely to give you a list of instructions to follow which will allow you to heal best and most recommend that, no matter which type of plastic surgery you have undergone that you hold off exercising, lifting things, doing chores or participating in any sort of strenuous activity that may cause swelling, bleeding or that may tear your stitches and extend your healing time. The desired effect everyone who chooses to have plastic surgery hopes for, is to come out of the process with the type of body that they have always dreamed of - proportionate and beautiful. If this desired physical effect is achieved, it will usually reflect in a person’s demeanor. Most people who have plastic surgery and who are pleased with the results of that surgery, find that they are more confidant and self assured and therefore more outgoing. Obviously emotional effects will vary from person to person but often plastic surgery helps to bring people out of their shells and allows them to become more personable.

Risks of Plastic Surgery Although complications from plastic surgery are quite rare nowadays each person who is considering having this type of surgery done, should make themselves aware of the possible risks of plastic surgery. Scarring is one of the most common risks that people considering plastic surgery should be aware of. Most surgeons will try to hide incision lines in places where they aren’t noticeable, like Minissha Lamba under the crease of the breast in Breast Augmentation plastic surgery and in the hairline in facial plastic surgery, but most surgeries will still result in permanent scarring. Bleeding, infection and hematomas are possible after surgery, but if these complications are caught early on they can usually be treated. Some people who undergo plastic surgery will feel numb in the area that was operated on while and others may experience problems moving muscles in the area where the surgery was performed.

Femina Miss Beautiful Skin. My parents were not comfortable with my aim to make a profession in the entertainment industry, initially. They gave me a year time to achieve what I wanted to and I agreed that if things won’t fall in place according to how I planned, I would go ahead with my parents’ decision. But I would like to thank God for all that I have gained so far.

Taapsee Pannu is a model-turned-film actress. An ethnic Punjabi, she was a software engineer before pursuing modelling which eventually led her to acting. Appearing in several commercials, Taapsee also won Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face and Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin, during her modelling days. She made her acting debut in 2010 with K. Raghavendra Rao’s romantic-musical Jhummandi Naadam. Later, she made her Tamil debut with multiple national award winning Aadukalam. She made her foray into Malayalam cinema with Doubles.

Journey to Tollywood – While in Delhi, I was disappointed about the fact that I was not taken in the best college, but God had better plans for me. I was passionate about modeling. After being chosen as the finalist for Miss India and being featured in several advertisements, I wanted to achieve something bigger in the film industry. I always loved the idea of portraying the role of a dramatic person and so I am in this industry.

Beyond Tollywood Beyond movies, I am always myself. I go back home, I am totally a normal

Life before being an actress – I was a very simple girl, leading an ordinary life just like others. I was more into dancing, extra-curricular activities and debating, during my schooling days. girl who has a bunch of friends. I make a lot of friends and people who could make me upset, are very few.

Your future projects – A few days back I made a casual recall on the number of movies I did so far in Tollywood. Currently, I am working on a Telugu movie – Mogudu, starring next to Gopi Chand and directed by Krishna Vamsi. The movie is expected to release in October and we are all looking forward for it. The title for the Tamil remake for this movie, will be – Vandhan Vendran. I am also excited to be a part of the classic remake of Chasme Baddoor, which will be directed by David Dhawan and the production is by Viacom. It will be by debut flick in Bollywood.

Movie(s) which you enjoyed working in more – Every movie I did will always remain unique for me, right from my first to my current project. Because if I wasn’t a part of those initial movies, I may not be where I am now, therefore, in terms of success, they are all connected to each other.

• I get bored at things, fast. • I look at things with my heart, but take decisions with my mind • I take my profession seriously, so I am different person when I am at work. But when I am not working and back at home, I am a simple, talkative girl spending time more with family and friends.

Your success maxim –

My passion towards dancing – I am multi-tasking person. I am passionate about dancing and have been into this art, since I was four. My parents have always supported me in participating in every extra-curricular activity at School. I had to choose Khatak over Bharatanatyam, for it allows swift movements. Apart from this, I also learned Indian and Western dances at Shiamak Davar.

4 things people don’t know about me – • I am short tempered. But, at the same time, I show immense patience at situations which need it. 48 AUGUST, JULY, 20112011

It was an obsession during those days and I feel it still is one of the forms of entertainment at the classes. But as we grow, activities, likes, pass times, hobbies and obsessions change.’

also remember my cousin’s crazy habit for about a year, to mix powder with lotions and apply them on her pretty face. It seems that this made her fairer. The fair and lovely plus – was the name of her bogus product. It was only a few months later, when red blotches and pimples started filming upon her face, did she get rid of that awful habit. Another fun fact - my uncle bought a bullet (bike) when his pockets had suffered some really severe holes and that too by selling off his tiny house to pay for it in installments and cover his monthly insurance for the same. Well, it is a fun fact because he was at an age where mistakes are obvious and now, even after a good long decade, he has this bike in his garage repaired and taken care of, every week and a must mention - no one other than him, is allowed to put a hand on its frame. Now that is something really crazy. That is obsession. An obsession, which now is a passion.

Obsession and passion are mostly confused with, aren’t they? For instance, one of my friends who I met after a long time in the summer of 2011 tells me that she is obsessed about wearing bracelets (that very moment she had 11 of them - yes I counted, dangling on her left wrist). But when the same person tells me that her busy schedule has no slot for painting - her yet another obsession, you have to make a correction. Painting makes you happy. Passion defines enthusiasm, excitement, the reason we jolt of the bed every morning. Obsession is craze! It is the reason why you would walk the white hot fire no matter how much it hurts. But with time you either know it really wasn’t worth the entire crazy act or just learn to live with it. Without being obsessed but habituated - that is called passion. I think passion comes from obsession. But the vice-versa, not entirely true, is it? Here, we are having an entirely different discussion. This article is not about which is better among obsession and passion; but it is a brief discourse on the obsession carried by the people of today’s world. When it comes to girls, we have a long line queued up and talking about it in long lines might end up your boggling mind with an inference never tasted before. And guys? Let us generalize this, because we are not talking of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders here. Or are we? Let us find that out later. Well, guys usually have stronger inclination towards strongarm things. Again (without digressing, it is important to mention that) this is being generalized. Accessories, sandals, bags, purses, hair clutch (yes that too), clothes of course and strolls are a wider trend these days. But with them comes the varieties. For example, most girls in their teens find flipflops, sandals or slippers with unique strap styles and flat heels, really cool. They are considered trendy and a good show among friends. My friend’s sister has a three tier shoe-rack all to herself and a label that 50 AUGUST, 2011

says ‘Priya’s Flip-flop world’ written on a stick paper. Yes, a world of flip-flops! There were not only varieties of colours but different styles like some with laces, few with straps and others plain. She has an inbuilt as well as extra accessory unit – a kind of a drawer with stuff like butterfly stickers and zinc adhesives (which I probably used to buy from big bazaars when I was in school - to pin them on my slider cup boards). I mentioned notepad, didn’t I? It reminded me of my crazy obsession for buying flowery, voguish and colourful notebooks (actually I still do). Notebooks are obviously an ultimate hobby among teenagers. The world is so open to matter-of-facts and love messages, feelings are hurt and bonds are made, love is in the air and those times are gone when they were supposed to be hidden, they are actually sweet now. No matter how accessible and neat those live journals and blogging might be, words are best expressed inside the closed covers (some even with locks). The enigma of a secret life among all the odds is when the girl waits for her prince charming and the day

he comes to her, she will show him her diary - A diary painted with colours, photos, signs and love. A diary with the life of its own! So yes, collecting such notebooks, no matter you design them by yourself or pay frivolous bucks to dream-of-girls companies - Archies or Alibaba, they are a lovable trend (This actually was a note for guys too. Now you know what she would love to have on her birthday). There is this guy I know who is crazy about bikes and cars. He collects models of all his favourite brands, has a book with such details. He has them salivating on his tongue –‘Ducati, Hayabusa, Ferrari, Audi, BMW and what not. I have them all! And those I don’t get, I get a picture of them from magazines like Overdrive and cut them on boundaries and paste them on similar cardboard cut-outs. Someday I am going to buy them (laughs carelessly). No, not these! I am sure we will have flying cars by the time I am ready to earn!’

Louis Vuitton are a mantra among the lot now! Do I need to talk about heels? A lot of women like high heels! There are kitten heels (smaller ones) and the stilettos, a crazy epic! Red, black, green, pink, orange or white, Just name it. Girls are so obsessed about them. Science says that make your back look uber-curvy. But trust me, there is no reason. They are hot! Many who are not very comfy with standing on pencils too have something to be nuts about – wedge heels! My sister’s feet size is the same as shoes displayed on the windows. And if you are a girl and a jealous one here, then you definitely don’t want to see her closet.

College girls love to use different types of bags and that too according to everyday use. Someday, there might be less stuff to have and other days there is so much to carry in bags. So they want bags agreeing with their day, clothes, mood and attitude! When it comes to girls, they usually are the little materialistic things which give them a sense of pleasure. Same with nail-paint (nail art - the latest mantra), cosmetics, accessories and clothes. Creating combinations from the closet does make a crazy and healthy obsession. Boys do not seem to care much about having more clothes and accessories, do they? Well, they don’t have to. Gadgets, sunglasses, bikes, cars and sports are always there to fantasize them. Obsession is a good thing. It slowly becomes a hobby and may even turn into passion. But it may involve waste in resources. It’s like replaying our favourite music so much that, a time comes when you cannot hear it anymore. But as long as you can afford it and when people around you do not have any problem, then why not? Are other things occupying your mind? Like obsession for cleanliness, food, violence or children? Well they are further away from your normal self – they are OCDs (rang any bell?). Some obsessions can be unhealthy, for example, watching TV for hours together, eating incessantly or preferring social networking over books and face to face communication. But if taken care and dealt the right way, they can actually be for an entire benefit of our being. Learn to live it! Cheers!

Now shoes are one common obsession among women and men and brand is imperative too. Shoes are expensive, the branded ones especially. They definitely are a good investment, but that too varies from person to person. For instance, the sporty guys obviously prefer athletic shoes like the usual running shoes, cleats, golf ones – they may not be the most comfortable, but come on, who wants to be comfy? They are exclusively meant to keep their feet glued on ground and released on command. Now there are the casual wears. Oxford shoes are not the teenage type and hardly ever really considered a collection. But we have bluchers, monk-straps or simple slip-ons. Puma, Reebok, Gucci, AUGUST, 2011 51

The Spirit of Ramzan By Aditya Tej

A festival for peace, an amalgamation of felicity and prosperity and an occasion about togetherness…

W

hat makes this fete of Ramzan phenomenal among everyone is that its simplicity and the way it brings together people with similar wishes and purposes of sharing love, serenity and happiness to their near and dear ones. Ramzan is the month in which the holy Quran was sent down to earth, to guide the mankind and also to clear the signs for guidance and judgment between wrong and right. Words may not describe how important Ramzan is, the blessings and the benefits from it and how good it feels to complete a day’s fast or the joy and a feeling of festivity when the day’s fasting is over.

Ramzan is the name of the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, a lunar calendar, and so the start of this month falls on different dates of the Gregorian calendar each year.

The month of Ramzan is also special for its particular emphasis on alms giving. During Ramzan, the expectation is to spend beyond this routine charity. Spending generously for social welfare by helping the poor and needy and by partaking in other community welfare projects is encouraged.

The end of Ramzan is marked by the festival of Eid. This can best be understood as a thanksgiving ceremony, where gratitude to God is expressed for having enabled the devotees to advance in physical and spiritual endurance. Benefits of Ramzan – • It enforces patience and determination.

It is a time when the devotees concentrate on their faith and spend less time on the concerns of their everyday lives. It is a time of worship, contemplation and fasting plays a key role in accomplishing these goals by allowing for greater concentration on the spiritual, generating empathy for the hungry and cleansing the body of overindulgence. The practice of fasting dates back to prehistory. All world religions have made mention of fasting as a practice vital to one’s physical and spiritual health. It strengthens one’s ties with Allah and trains the soul to observe duties of devotion in accordance with the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah of the Prophet. The typical day starts hours before dawn when Muslims wake up to remember God and spend time in meditation. This predawn prayer is called the Tahajjud prayer. The Quran is also recited more during this time, as well as at other times during the day.

It promotes the principle of sincerity by keeping the followers away from arrogance and showing off, since it is an act between the individual and his Creator.

It promotes good character, particularly truthfulness and trust-worthiness.

It encourages a devotee to do away with bad habits and change his/her circumstances for the better.

It enhances generosity, hospitality, and spending on charitable causes.

It reinforces feelings of unity and brotherhood among followers.

God said – ‘Every act of man is for him except fasting, it is done for My sake and I will give reward for it. The breath of a faster is sweeter to God than the fragrance of musk.’

It instills orderliness and close observance of the value of time.

It offers a chance to balance one’s attention to both physical and spiritual needs.

It serves as an opportunity for children to perform acts of obedience and to practice acts of worship.

Few of my very good friends celebrate it in a grand way and personally, I got to learnt a lot from them, about this festival. The fasting, charity, blessings and the Quran! Wishing everyone happy Ramzan.’ Ruheen Shaikh - ‘As this is a month of fasting and is considered as the most holy month of the year, I follow the basic rules of fasting, charity and prayers. 10 easy ways to lose weight

By Aaliyah

Go Walking Walking when the weather is good, is a supereasy way to keep fit. No sidewalks in your neighbourhood? Try these tips for slipping in more steps • Get out of the office building and enjoy walking meetings. • Sweep the drive or rake the leaves instead of using a leaf-blower. • Get off the bus a few stops earlier. • Hike the mall, being sure to hit all the levels. • Take the stairs every chance you get. • Sign up for charity walks.

One of the easiest ways to cut back without feeling denied is to switch to lower-calorie versions of the foods you crave. A pizza tastes just as good with reduced-fat cheese. And while you’re trimming fat calories, keep an eye on boosting fiber Fiber helps you feel satisfied longer, so while you lighten family favourites, you can easily amp up the fiber by adding a cup of whole wheat flour to your pizza dough or toss a handful of red bell peppers on the pie.

Add, Don’t Subtract Forget diet denial: Try adding foods to your diet instead of subtracting them. Add in healthy goodies you really love, like deep-red cherries, juicy grapes or crunchy snow peas. Slip those favorite fruits into your bag lunch and breakfast cereal; add the veggies into soups, stews and sauces.

Share and Share Alike Get Involved, or at Least Get to the Table When your weight loss efforts lead to boredom or too much self-focus, get occupied with something else. Try discovering yoga, fashion treands or enjoying painting. Or maybe you want to help a child with a science project, repaint the bedroom, or take a class. The key - Have a life outside of weight loss!

Lighten the Foods You Already Love

With the massive portions served at so many restaurants, its so easy to share and eat. Whenever you go out order one portion and share it with your partner do the same with dessert also. Why not double up on a bicycle built for two? Twice the motivation, without twice the effort - a steal of a deal.

Because Hydration Helps - Really! Down some water before a meal and you won’t feel so famished as for the compulsive snacker it’s a great idea to keep no-calorie beverages at hand as a way to keep your mouth busy and less likely to snack on junk food. Going to a party? Grab a low-cal drink in one hand and keep it there. Not only does it make it harder to graze the buffet, but you’ll also be less tempted to sip endless cocktails, too.

Forget About Working Out

Size Matters

If the word exercise inspires you to creative avoidance, then avoid it. Maybe the trick to enjoying a workout may be to never call it working out. Burn calories and invigorate muscles by beachcombing, riding bikes, grass skiing, making snow angels, hiking, washing the car, playing Frisbee, chasing the dog around the yard.

Eating less without feeling denied is as close as your dinnerware. That’s because while a small portion served on a large plate can leave you craving more, a smaller plate gives the visual signal that you already have more. People go by physical cues, when they eat. We know we’ve had enough because we see the bottom of our bowl or plate. A smaller plate full of food just feels more satisfying than a large plate with that same amount of food on it. And don’t forget smaller bowls, cups and spoons. For example, try savouring a bowl of ice cream with a baby spoon. Not only does the pleasure last longer, but your body has time to register the food you’ve eaten.

Tune In, Tone Up Try dancing to the music when you tune into your favorite music show or practice some stress-relieving cardio boxing when your least favorite reality contestant is on camera. During commercials pedal your stationery bike, walk the treadmill or slip in a little strength training doing bicep curls with cans of your favorite fizzy beverage as weights. Or get inspired to really focus - Put in a high-energy exercise DVD and get motivated by the pros onscreen. It doesn’t matter exactly what you do, so long as you’re up and active. Aim for at least 15 minutes.

Lose It Today, Keep It Off Tomorrow Finally, be patient. While cultivating that virtue isn’t exactly painless, it may help to know that keeping weight off generally gets easier over time. A research found that for people who had lost at least 20 kilos - and kept it off for at least two years maintaining that weight loss required less effort as time went on.

CULINARY SECRETS FROM MASTERCHEF

TULIP

She was an artist before, with a passion towards sculpturing. She was a craft enthusiast and taught children craft for 6-7 years. But she realized that cooking was her passion and loved cooking for guests and for friends. She then turned her passion into a profession. She travelled all over India now and given several cooking classes. A Bengali by origin, Smita Dugar, the finalist at MasterChef - India talks to Tulip, her journey so far as a chef, shares her culinary secrets, how much she enjoys cooking, her association to Hyderabad and how the city makes her feel different from other places – Smita Dugar is the first among the 12 finalists, to be chosen for MasterChef – Season I. ‘During one of the episodes of MasterChef, I made a dish, Badami Subz Fatehpuri for the Maharaja of Udaipur, Arvind Singh Mewar. He said that it was the best dish he ever tasted and included the dish in the Royal Menu of the Palace. It was a great honour for me.’ Life as a chef –

NACHOS WITH SALSA AND REFRIED BEANS

My husband used to compliment me and always encouraged. After living in Gujarat for 5 years and having travelled to France, Germany, Italy and many more, I am back to Hyderabad.

Ingredients -

Your favourite cuisine –

Method Of Preparation – Cut Tortilla into pieces. Deep fry in oil.

NACHOS : Tortilla, Oil for frying. SALSA : 1 green capsicum, 3 red tomatoes, 1 tsp garlic (chopped), 1 Onion, 1 tbsp Olive Oil, 1 tbsp tomato sauce, 1 tsp celery, 1 tsp vinegar, 1-2 tsp chili-flakes, Coriander leaves (optional), 1 tbsp sauce, salt and pepper to taste.

I like simple food! Mexican and Lebanese cuisines are very healthy. I love Italian and fusion cuisines. My all time favourite dishes are – Pasta, Upma, Pani-Puri, I am working on my cookbook currently and would be launched by the end of this year. Secret of success, to be a good chef – Cook from your heart!

Method Of Preparation – Roast the capsicum and tomato, on flame (skin and deseeded). Chop onions and roasted capsicum finely. Mix all in other ingredients. Ready to serve.

Best compliment you ever received – It was from my daughter, she said : ‘Mama, you are a great cook.’ Akshay Kumar also appreciated me for the amount of knowledge I have in cooking. He didn’t expect that I would be out of the competition and told me that he was the saddest when I left. Chef Kunal also quoted – ‘Smita is the face of the Indian housewife.

REFRIED BEANS : 2 cups boiled Rajma, 2 tbsp butter, 2 tsp garlic, 2 tsp chili flakes, 1 tsp cumin powder, 2 tsp tomato sauce, 2 tsp red chili sauce, salt and pepper to taste.

About Hyderabad – It’s a wonderful city! There is no other city I can compare with Hyderabad. The city gives an opportunity to do something different, for everyone. It embraces everyone who visits. TOGETHER, FOREVER By Aditya Tej

He found his niche in the world of business. On a rendezvous with Tulip, Ashish Malpani talks about striking success in Hyderabad, his marriage to Shweta Malpani and the love and esteem towards their family…

Ashish and Shweta with kids Krish (L) and Kabir (R)

BUSINESS – Ashish – ‘It was all set forth by my father, four decades ago. When he was 16, he visited Hyderabad from Rajasthan, with a purpose to ameliorate business and settle here. He started with Jute business, Bengal crockery and Cast-iron foundry, which was the first foundry in the whole of Andhra Pradesh. Then he formed the Maheshwari group of companies, with MPM being a brand name for its malls. Malpanis are now into constructions and are diversified into Hotels, Townships, Malls and commercials. We have recently moved our office, to my residence. It helps us focus on both professional and personal lives equally. Day goes by, with proper schedule as well. ‘

ABOUT FAMILY – Shweta – ‘Whilst I live in a joint family and with my in-laws, I never had this feeling of being away from my parents and from my hometown. We get along well with each other. I share a wonderful rapport with them. Ashish is a soft spoken person but is serious, when it comes to work. He is workaholic and is always punctual to office. 58 AUGUST, 2011

BEST HOLIDAY MOMENTS – Shweta – ‘Goa and Hong Kong are the places we visited with our kids and they cherished every moment, at these holiday places. Holidaying at Coorg will remain special, one of the reasons being – our stay in a private pool villa with kids. First visit to Switzerland will stay memorable for us – where we got to know each other well.’

Tour to Hong Kong

He has been extremely supportive all through my married life in every aspect.‘ Ashish – ‘I have been living in a joint family ever since I was born and I share that attachment with everyone. I am the youngest son to my parents. I am fond of my mother and respect my father a lot. I share a wonderful relation with my elder brothers. They understand me well and give that space we require. We always believe in keeping professional and personal lives aside. We are blessed with two kids, Krish and Kabir (5 and 3 years young respectively). We have been learning from them, things like – being more patient and affectionate, not just at them, but generally towards every member in the family. Krish and Kabir are different from each other. Kabir, being the youngest around, is always pampered by many among the family. But Krish is a bit serious and reserved. He loves reading books and prefers everyone being around him.

Ashish – ‘I have a group of very close friends and family members, to whom I send morning messages. I have been doing this regularly over many years now and never missed a day. And not a single message is repeated! My friends too, got used to it so much that, even if I make a delay of 10 or 15 minutes in sending, they would text me asking the reason for the delay.’

We have a limited circle of friends. So if it’s about partying at home or even going out with friends, it’s always with my immediate family and a few very close friends. All my friends are likeminded and we love meeting up for casual dinners and attend theatre shows or concerts.’

LOVE TOWARDS KRISH AND KABIR – Shweta – ‘When it comes to food, I am a bit particular, because I insist in kids eating healthy and nutritious food. I also impart them, the importance of being healthy and fit. Not just with my kids, but I ask every family member at home, to eat healthy food. ‘ Ashish – ’They mean more than the world to us! I have never so far, raised our voices at them. I would like to deal every situation in a smooth way and that’s a very important thing in joint families.’

CARNATIONS

Paper carnations are a perfect introduction to paper flower crafts. Follow these simple instructions to bring tissue paper to life YOU WILL NEED • Bright colored tissue paper • Ruler • Dull pencil • Scissors • Green chenille stems • Clear tape • Green florist tape Step 1:

Using 3 layers of 1 color of tissue paper, cut out a section about 12 inches long and 3 inches wide.

Step 2:

In the lower left-hand and right-hand corners, make a pencil mark 1/2 inch above the bottom edge.

Step 3:

Now carefully draw a straight line across the tissue from pencil mark to pencil mark. Also in the lower left-hand corner, make a second mark 1/2 inch above the line.

Step 4:

From the second mark, draw a diagonal line to the top right corner. Cut off the excess tissue paper above the diagonal line.

Step 5:

All the way across the tissue paper, make narrow cuts from the top diagonal edge down to the straight line across the bottom.

Step 6:

Place the top part of the chenille stem in the corner of the short end and tape it down.

Step 7:

Roll the pipe cleaner toward the long end. Make sure the bottom edges of the tissue paper always line up.

Step 8:

When done, tape the bottom edge of the tissue paper down. Wrap green florist tape around the top of the chenille stem and 1 inch up the flower.

Step 9:

Now slowly pull down and fluff out the flower petals, working from the outside in toward the center.

AUTOMOBILES

BEST FROM BMW

They are known for their performance, luxury motors and are global leaders in premium car products. They produce motorcycles under BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna brands. The range offers discerning drivers a world of unrivalled innovations, premium quality and sheer driving pleasure.

M

3, like all other BMW models, is a hot looking convertible, which offers new possibilities to experience without compromising the driving dynamics, ensuring a sports car performance for daily driving. It also features tuned suspension, a six-speed manual transmission, a carbon fiber roof and all the exterior modifications typical of an M car. The M3’s V8 powerplant has two more cylinders than its predecessor, delivering 414 horsepower from 4.0 litters and maximum torque of 295 pound-feet, at 3,900 rpm. The move to eight cylinders in the fourth generation BMW M3 provides a powerplant offering the seemingly disparate characteristics of more power, increased efficiency and reduced weight when compared with the previous six-cylinder M3 engine. Offering extremely fast and responsive valve timing, this technology reduces charge cycle losses and improves the output, torque and response of the engine, with a positive influence on fuel economy and emission management. The engine is the lightest V8 in the world, weighing less than the previous M3’s inline-six. The M3’s carbon fiber roof panel cuts unnecessary weight and lowers the car’s center of gravity. It also lets the roof edge appear flatter and thus lowers the perceived body height. A separate throttle butterfly for each cylinder – eight in this instance – is a feature adapted from BMW M’s racing heritage and provides immediate reaction to the gas pedal at all times. Two stepper motors operate the four throttle butterflies on each row of cylinders, giving

64 AUGUST, 2011

the engine a particularly sensitive response at low speeds together with an immediate reaction whenever the driver presses down the accelerator for extra power and performance. It also features large compound disc brakes which are connected to a floating aluminum hub by cast-in stainless-steel pins. This configuration reduces the thermal loads on the discs, thus increasing their performance and service life. A volume flow-controlled, pendulum-slide cell pump supplies the engine with lubricating oil, delivering the quantity required by the engine. In its gearshift characteristics, M double clutch transmission with Drivelogic is ideally matched to the fast-revving V8 engine. Wet sump oil lubrication, optimized for dynamic performance, ensures consistent oil supply to the highrpm engine at all times, particularly in extreme braking maneuvers. The system features two oil sumps - a small oil sump in front of the front axle subframe and a large oil sump behind it. Buyers seeking an open-air experience can opt to delete the car’s standard carbon fiber roof and replace it with a regular steel top and integrated glass moonroof. The specifications include – 19” wheels, electronic damping control, extended novillo leather interiors, power folding mirrors, three optional interior trims. M3 with is the best handling production M car ever built. The power button changes the throttle response between normal, sport or SportPlus settings. The same button simultaneously changes the servotronic steering assist from comfort to sport mode.

M

6 convertible offers top-down motoring with the same exceptional performance and handling of the M6 coupe. Power comes from BMW’s 500 horsepower V10 engine developed for F1 racing and the convertible is equipped with the high-tech suspension and performance modifications of the M6 coupe, as well as the same extensive list of 21st century automotive innovations as available on the other 6-Series models. At 4400 pounds, the high-revving engine is more than capable of moving that much weight in a spirited manner, with zero to sixty times in the low five second range and electronically limited top speed well beyond what can be achieved on a track. The gas mileage in the V10 is rated at only 11 mpg city and 17 highways. To set the M6 apart from the standard 6-Series, as well as to improve aerodynamics and road grip, the car is fitted with a distinctive front air dam that channels air flow to the engine and brakes, a rear air diffuser flanked by four tail pipes, sculpted rocker panels and side gills in the front fenders. The soft-top adds some innovative styling touches, with neat rear fins on either side of the glass rear window. The rear window actually can be opened just like a side window for a sun-shaded, but breezy drive. In the unlikely event of a roll-over accident, rear roll hoops deploy to protect passengers, which will make the convertible legal for most track-day events. Track performance is improved with the intelligent electronic M differential and dynamic stability control with selective M dynamic mode that allows a higher degree of wheel slip before engaging to permit some rear end drift in spirited driving. The styling of the 6-series is thought by many to be the best in the BMW line-up and the two-door convertible has a particularly sleek and graceful look. Electronic damping control also allows the driver to change shock absorber settings to suit driving conditions and intentions. Large brake rotors, nearly 15 inches in diameter are standard. Apart from the body structure, only the doors, the retractable hardtop, the luggage compartment lid, the windows and the rear lights

come from the standard open-air version of the BMW 3-Series. The convertible has high-performance brakes to keep the car’s massive power in check. The rear axle V-bars provide reinforcement and are extended all the way to the side-sills. This configuration enhances chassis stiffness around the rear axle - critical for a convertible performance car. The rotors measure 14.2 inches up front and 13.8 inches at the rear. Adjusting damper forces electro hydraulically, EDC optimizes both the car’s vertical vibration behavior as well as its yaw and roll motion in bends and its dynamic axle load distribution when applying the brakes and when accelerating. The convertible is available with options of four special M metallic paintwork colors - Melbourne Red metallic, Jerez Black, Interlagos Blue and the M5/M6-sourced Silverstone. On the interior, front seat space is quite comfortable and the supportive sports seats are a good choice for spirited driving, but rear seats, though quite comfortable, are fairly limited for taller adults. The rear seat backs fold down to form a carpeted luggage shelf with holddown straps for extra luggage on long trips. The optional Sport Package upgrades the seats, wheels and tires for the more performanceoriented owner. Safety features are extensive, including multi-stage front airbags, front-seat mounted side-impact airbags, curtain-style head protection, ABS with brake assist and brake-force distribution, tire-pressure monitors, fully-equipped first-aid kit that has always been packed in BMW trunks and BMW’s assist telematics system with automatic collision notification and SOS button. The specifications include – Heads-up windshield display, radarmanaged cruise control, night-vision screen, navigation, satellite and high-definition radio, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, eight-speaker audio system, auto-dimming mirrors, xenon adaptive headlamps and moonroof. An important aspect of all this technology is that everything, from audio to ventilation is controlled by the single-knob BMW iDrive system. AUGUST, 2011 65

orsche Boxster S - The Boxster S is the higher-performance version of Porsche’s mid-engine roadster with a more powerful engine, better brakes, modified suspension, and larger 18-inch alloy wheels. The updated Boxster S features direct fuel injection, which resulted in an additional 10 horsepower and improved fuel economy. The freshened exterior is highlighted by a new halogen headlight design reminiscent of the discontinued Carrera GT supercar, complete with integrated direction indicators. The taillights were also revised with LEDs, integrating more elegantly to the modified rear end. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a seven-speed PDK automated manual is optional. A new suspension system promises better driving dynamics and enhanced comfort, depending on driving conditions. A modified valve control map for the steering system serves to reduce steering forces, giving the Boxster even more agile steering behaviour. The Boxster features the latest generation of PSM Porsche stability management now offering two new functions - brake preloading and the brake assistant. Whenever the driver lets go of the gas pedal very quickly - which is typical of an upcoming emergency braking maneuver - the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up an appropriate level of pressure on the wheel brakes before the driver even presses down the brake pedal, moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs for immediate action. This significantly improves brake response and shortens stopping distances accordingly. New PCM Porsche communication management available as an option complete with hard disc navigation serves as the central control unit for all audio, communication and navigation features. Open-air driving is always only 12 seconds away with the Boxster’s folding soft-top roof. When in the up position, it complements the vehicle’s overall style and sleek lines. An aluminum hard-top is optional. The

66 AUGUST, 2011

soft-top comes in four colors - black, gray, brown and blue. Aerodynamics is a large part of the Boxster’s style, with ducts that bring cooling air to the car’s radiators and brakes. An automatic spoiler rises out of the rear to reduce lift and maintain stability at high speeds. The Boxster’s drag coefficient is remarkably low at just 0.29. Performance - Boxster models are equipped with brand engine developments. The Boxster has a larger capacity, performance-enhanced, water-cooled sixcylinder Boxer engine that is free revving, with optimum load change and extremely smooth running. With a perfectly matched interplay of all engine components, the Boxster now develops 188 kW (255 hp). vario-cam plus, in conjunction with the optimized intake manifold ensures high torque even at low speeds and excellent power development in the upper rev range. Maximum torque is available over a wide rev range, reaching 290 Nm between 4,400 and 6,000 rpm. The engine in the Boxster S features direct fuel injection (DFI). This means even more power - the 3.4-litre power plant develops 228 kW (310 hp) at a maximum torque of 360 Nm between 4,400 and 5,500 rpm. Resonance Intake Manifold - The intake manifold with dual-flow distributor pipe has an adjustment valve which closes and opens at set engine speeds. A two-stage tuning effect creates oscillation of the air mass in the intake system, which in turn generates a turbo-charging effect and optimizes induction. These two effects combine to produce higher torque at low engine speeds, a flatter torque curve and increased power output at high engine speeds. The acoustic properties of the system are second to none, producing the characteristic Boxster sound. The specifications include - 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, 6400 rpm, 12.5 : 1 compression ratio, top track speed of 170 mph, 0 – 60 mph in 5.0 seconds.

SUCCESS STORY

WAY TO TRIUMPH

Pradeep Mittal, the Managing Director for Magna Infotech talks to Tulip, about his inspiration, how things fell in place, just at the time when needed and his achievements in the field of business About the brand Magna Infotech -

Today, Magna Infotech ranks 20 in Headcount in Temp staffing as per the statistics across the globe. In India, we are one of the leading and fastest growing IT temp staffing firms. Today, we have offices in 7 cities across India; 200+ blue chip companies as our clients; employee spread has been in 32 cities across India. We have deployed over 20,000 IT professionals in last 6-7 years. Magna Infotech ranks 20 in Headcount in Temp staffing as per the statistics across the globe. In India, we are one of the leading and fastest growing IT temp staffing firms. We have potential to grow 10 times of what we are today in the coming 3 – 5 years. How and when your business started I started my own business in 1995, in a small setup at USA. Later, I moved back to India. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Magna was born with headquarters at Hyderabad.

Why did you choose Hyderabad? And how the city is now, in terms of development and infrastructure -

I am from Hyderabad. It has been the most happening city for over a decade now. People over here are more open, dynamic and lively. There has been amazing amount of development in spheres of education, real estate, hospitality, technology and specifically IT industry. The image and progression of Hyderabad has attracted lot of MNCs creating job opportunities for youth. Personally and professionally, Hyderabad has added immense value to me and the staffing business that we are in today.

The journey so far as a businessman -

sides people, you need to initially work towards attaining growth and visibility and not profits.

Thing which kept you going through tough times -

I had the strong faith in myself and the vision I held. Though, I made mistakes, I learnt to move ahead and not repeat them. There has been lot of emotional and moral support from family, friends and well-wishers during the tough times. Today, when I am going through a golden phase, I owe a lot to them.

The business journey teaches and changes everyone. So how do you think it has changed you -

The journey of a techie to an entrepreneur has been an amazing amount of learning. It was similar to the process of catharsis. It also meant taking challenges head-on and remaining sane at the same time. As an entrepreneur, you are not only responsible for yourself and your family, but also to all the employees who are working with you and their families. It is a huge responsibility that requires great amount of determination, maturity and right decision-making. The experience has given entirely different outlook to my personality; widened my perspective towards life and things around me. I think I am becoming better with each passing day and this keeps me moving ahead.

In the near future –

I am looking forward to be a serial entrepreneur and hope I would be successful.

The journey from being an employee to an entrepreneur has been very challenging and at the same time very fruitful. When you are an employee, you are just accountable for the responsibilities that are assigned to you. When something goes wrong at the end of the day, someone above you is finally accountable. As an entrepreneur, you are on your own – with your strengths, setbacks, biases and choices. The journey of any entrepreneur is to keep breaking the boundaries of his/ her own personality and reinvent every time a milestone is achieved. To me toughest battles have been where I had to bring the best people who differed from me and had a different outlook together and make them believe in the vision and ensure that they give their best. Choosing the right people for the right job, taking right decisions at the right moment and leaving a room for contingencies have been the vital part of the business. We are in a business where we are controlled by lot of external factors. To succeed and remain in top position in staffing business, we need to continually reinvent ourselves to break self-imposed and external bottlenecks.

An open secret and a top secret about you -

Your take on your success -

Live your life on your own terms and never give up when you are going through tough times. It is very important to ensure that yours and your family’s lifestyle is never compromised because of the decisions you make.

People are THE most important aspect of any business’s success. I strongly believe you need to have the best people in your team. Be-

An open secret about me is that I am very transparent. The top secret of my success has been inducting the best people and giving them space to be themselves and taking them along. Besides, I spend lot of time mentoring people to give their best to the organization.

Past time activities -

Golf is my passion. I love to be in touch with my classmates and friends. Also, I enjoy mentoring my colleagues.

You owe your success to –

I owe everything that I am today, to my family.

Professional or personal, choose one -

Had you asked me two decades ago about this, I would have chosen Professional. Today, it’s more of family and social responsibilities.
