Mixed use block in Kerala, India My final year design project was set in Calicut, India. Based on a literature review I developed a manifesto on the concept of social capital and its relationship to the cities we build. In the second stage, as a group we set out to identify the various issues Calicut is facing and gathered plenty of secondary data prior to our study trip to India. During our time there I actively participated in organising a debate on social capital, designing and distributing a social survey, and extensive mapping, sketching, interviewing and 3d scanning. We then analysed the identified issues and their interdependence to lay the foundation for a developed urban strategy. My specific focus was on hampering the uncontrolled urban sprawl through proposed land-use policies and identifying potential streets for pedestrianization using mathematical algorithm Space Syntax. Finally, I proposed a high-rise mixed use housing block, the design of which is to serve as a prototype for future developments and thus a catalyst for the wider city strategy. The building was imagined as funded by a local housing cooperative which was reflected in the design, incorporating a public ramp as a primary circulation route, modularity allowing adaptability, and fragmented volumetric aesthetics to harmonize with the eclectic Indian context. Social Capital and the City 13
Filmmaking: Tales from a rickshaw We were asked to create a 10-minute video presenting the unit’s goals and the work we had done throughout the year. I took the lead on this project after winning an internal competition based on initial ideas. My main idea was to present the issues in a more legible way that people outside of the architectural discipline could understand, unlike what had been done in previous years. As a result, the key concept revolves around presenting the challenges we identified in Calicut from the perspective of the common man - or the ultimate recipient of all issues we are discussing. The entire film is narrated by a rickshaw driver, which also allows for a visual introduction to the city from a street point of view, often lacking in produced diagrams. The script is divided into five sections, each of which introduces different issues that we have been focusing on. As team lead, I delegated tasks based on individuals’ skills, managed equipment usage, and planned the shooting schedule during our stay in Calicut. Despite a few concept adjustments, we successfully adapted to changing conditions and met our timeline. Watch the full film at:

Street Pavilion small-scale urban intevention in St Davids The proposal celebrates the freedom of walking throughout the urban area of St Davids by converting a narrow alley in the city into a multi-levelled pavilion.

CinemaLab cinema and theatre house in St Davids The proposal picks up on the themes explored in the Street Pavillion and investigates them on a larger urban scale, celebrating the freedom, spontaneity and surprises we experience when walking on the street. The design creates a Cinema and Theatre House which pays respect to the traditional architecture of St Davids, but also captures the peculiar colorful unconventionality of the cinema.

Competition entry: Treehouse After my second year of university, my colleague and I entered an architectural competition. Working together we developed a concept and design, responding to the brief which asked us to design a treehouse in proximity to a historic castle in France. Embedded in the immediate green surroundings of an imposing ancient castle the two modules, required by the competition, compile another Castle themselves. A simple combination between the towers of the Castle and the almost naive composition of playful colours, evokes nostalgic memories of times of simple days, filled with hiding in nature, building blanket forts and having the whole world to explore. The semi-transparent roof fully wrapped around the structure, combined with the hanging piece of fabric, full of vibrant colours just underneath it, create an abstract atmosphere, where the experience is highly personal and lets one pleasantly remember about the days of games and freedom. This sense of liberty is increased by the many interactive elements introduced in the construction, like the long curtains, hanging roof and rolling balcony, cover, creating architecture not frighteningly perfect, but spontaneously inviting and casual.
