GETTING SAUCY WITH LOYD!

This years Brighton Food Festival was blessed by the weather, hundreds of people dropped in to taste the delights and sip a few mojitos. Straight off stage and relaxing in the shade with his Panama hat, Loyd Grossman takes a few minutes out to explain how he found himself get ting saucy after a long career in journalism and television presenting. So, what ’s with that voice and how has it affected your career?

I moved from Boston to England in 1974…that’s it! It has been a blessing and a curse though – I remember once going to a hotel and when the receptionist saw the name on my credit card, she wanted to know if it was me. I didn’t want to make a fuss so I said no. She was really sweet and said that was a shame, but that it was my lucky day as the hotel must have thought it was the ‘real me’ because they had upgraded me to a suite! Another time when I was playing with my band a fan came over and asked if I was the same guy from the TV. I said yes and his girlfriend asked me to talk to her, which was a bit weird. I started chatting and she just cut me off half way through a sentence, saying “it’s not him” and walked off! You’re best known as a journalist and television presenter, but here you are making your own brand of sauces? Can you connect the dots?

Well, my first job was as a journalist working for Harpers and Queens, now known as Harpers Bazaar. During that time I was asked to write for all sorts of other people and I eventually found myself at the Sunday Times. While I was writing I frequently got asked to be on the radio and stuff like that. Someone just rang me up one day and said we’re starting a new television company which turned out to become TVAM. I didn’t know anything about television and I didn’t really have any interest in it – but I went in to see them. They were looking for new ideas for programmes and they had quite a nice atmosphere, so I went off

with a couple of friends and invented ‘Through the Key Hole’. As a result of that I got asked to do a lot of other programmes – I wanted to do a food programme in particular and I had heard about ‘MasterChef’. It was all relatively accidental you know, I didn’t have a plan. How did ‘ Through the Keyhole’ shape your career and what do you think about the latest series of Masterchef?

‘Through the Keyhole’ was very, very successful on TVAM, so much so that it went to prime time and, at its peak in the 1980s, it was probably the most watched British Entertainment Show. But, you know, it was only ever meant to be tongue in cheek – I really don’t care about anyone’s wallpaper! I was asked recently if I would do it again if they revived it, but I did it for 20 years and I think that’s enough! As for ‘Masterchef’, I think these days it’s more about professional chefs trying to make a name for themselves, rather than wholesome food, well made. are in Economic History and the History of Art, so how did you get into food?

I was hired at Harpers to write about all sorts of things, so when I was asked if I wanted to write about food, I said yes. It just so happened that our restaurant critic went off and disappeared one day without filing her copy and the Editor said to me, “Oh my dear you know all about food, why don’t you write something”. I’ve always loved food, my parents liked food and we travelled a lot to restaurants and it just went from a hobby to being a job.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

Did you have any food favourites when you were a kid?

Well I grew up on the seaside of New England so everything was very fish orientated, so you know, lobster, fried crabs, all the usual stuff. What’s your favourite style of food nowadays?

Whatever’s put in front of me! The only thing I hate is pompous food, I prefer ‘real’ food, you know? I mean, if anything came out to me on one of those silver platters with the lid, I’d rather leave the restaurant right then! I think Michelin Stars are over rated too, I know lots of Michelin restaurants I wouldn’t go back to and lots of fabulous places without them. What did you learn from your early experiences with Harpers and Queens with regards to food writing?

It was largely self taught in those days, simply because they were very few of us. There were only a couple of other restaurant critics in the country, so there was no one to copy as it were. I always like doing stuff for which I’m not really qualified. I like learning how to do things, which is why I’ve gone back to University. I don’t need another degree, but I like learning stuff. You’re also in a band, can you tell us a bit about that?

Well I’ve always played in bands, since I was 14. Getting to the stage where you have the time to really do it well is terrific! I have to say, playing Glastonbury is thrilling – playing big festivals is fabulous, a really amazing thing to do. I did Rebellion in Vienna a couple of years ago which was great! GETTING SAUCY WITH LOYD! What music are you listening to at the moment?

I listen to everything because of my kids, so I listen to a lot of what they would call ‘Urban Music’ – whether you define that as Tinchy Stryder or 50 cent – they love urban music. I love Jessie J, but who doesn’t like Jessie J? I also listen to a lot of old stuff. I like blues music, but I haven’t been listening to enough of that lately so I’m just kind of going through my back catalogue. For me it’ll always be Buddy Guy, Buddy Wallace, Chicago Blues – I love Elvis Collins and there is a great, great, great guitarist, I think he’s the greatest undiscovered blues guitarist, called Guitar Shorty, great name – I think he’s about 70, he’s fantastic! He allegedly helped to teach Jimi Hendrix to play guitar, who knows! Guitar Shorty I’d highly recommend! Where did you see yourself now, when you were a youngster… did you have a life plan?

No…in my late teens and very early twenties I was really only interested in music, either playing it or writing about it. I thought at that stage I possibly might end up in a career in music, but you know that changed very quickly. Any regrets?

No because I’m doing it now! I don’t have any regrets about anything because I get to do what I want to do….can’t ask for anything more than that! 10 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2012

If somebody was to follow in your footsteps what would you tell them to watch out for?

I’d tell them don’t do it! I would say follow your own path, but also, if you know what you want to do, don’t let others deter you. It’s very easy to discourage people, it’s much more difficult to encourage people – I kind of I like to do things that encourage people. You’re from boston but have lived here for many years, so where’s home?

This is home because I’ve lived here since 1974. I mean, I love Boston, but home is here, my kids are English, I’ve lived most of my life here and I’m so involved in this country. I love going back to the States to visit but this is home. Your career has taken you to many places far and wide. Have you got any favourite places in the world?

Well it kind of depends. I love India because India is so extraordinary that anyone could spend the rest of their lives there and never make every discovery, but the same thing is true of Venice. Venice is tiny, I’ve been there 40 times probably, but every time I go I discover something I hadn’t seen before. I suppose my two favourite countries to visit are probably Italy and India in terms of the history, the culture, the food, you know, the attitude. To advertise in Mayhem! Don’t try and be something that’s not you – much as celebrities have enviable glamour at festivals they also stayed in a hotel and have a VIP lounge to freshen up in. Don’t pack expensive products – stick to necessities and a good selection of staples.

BACK TO BASICS! You are camping in a field with very few luxuries so don’t spend hours decanting your favourite products into little pots to fit into your bag! Festivals are about getting in touch with nature! Let’s face it – it’s going to be muddy, you’re not going to be able to have a decent wash and you definitely won’t have a huge mirror to do your makeup in front of! Instead, swap your usual regime for a few basics. Tinted moisturiser is ideal – Witch Anti-blemish tinted moisturiser (£5.99 at Boots) is great as it mattifies your skin, so you don’t need powder over the top! Don’t forget a waterproof mascara either – we all know, too well, you can never trust the great British weather!

Do have fun! In both your makeup and the whole experience!

For the rest of your makeup, festivals are a time to get more creative and try things you wouldn’t normally! Here are a few ideas:

FACE ART! Snazaroo do brilliant face paint colours and if you’re not feeling artistic, some brilliant stencils. Why not club together with some friends and buy one colour each to give a variety. Use sponges to dab colour over the stencil and voilà ! 12 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2012

CONTRASTING LIPSTICK!

FEATHER EYELASHES! www.eyelashesdirect.co.uk has a brilliant selection of creative lashes or alternatively Sally’s sell individual feathers in a variety of colours to create your own! They add effortless drama to simple makeup or really set off a more creative look!

GLITTER AND GEMS! Add glitter and gems to your face art or create new patterns of your own! A bit of Vaseline will help to stick glitter to the face.

Make a statement with bright lipstick – contrast fuchsia shades with turquoise eyes or purple tones with yellow face art. Stick to matt shades for effortless chic. Or if you want to keep your makeup more natural, try a matt orange with bronzed eyes for a real summer glow.

ONE TO ONE WITH…

The ‘Price Tag’ singer looks forward to a summer of fun performing at a string of festivals. She also hits back at stories claiming she has been behaving like a diva on ‘ The Voice UK’ and the latest on her new single and the second album.

ONE TO ONE WITH… SO YOU ARE GOING TO BE PLAYING SOME BIG FESTIVAL GIGS OVER THE SUMMER, WHAT’S IT LIKE STANDING IN FRONT OF THAT MANY PEOPLE?

YOU ROCKED SOME GREAT LOOKS ON ‘THE VOICE’, IS IT SOMETHING YOU PLANNED EACH WEEK OR DID YOU HAVE A BIG PLAN FOR THE WHOLE SERIES?

You know what, that many people almost becomes less than say four or five hundred because you can’t really focus on them, it’s just a lot of noise. So I kind of just try and do what I do whether it’s ten people or eighty thousand, but it’s always amazing to hear that many people singing your songs. I try and get the audience involved and getting them to sing really loud. To be honest with you this festival season, this run, it’s gonna be bigger and better for me, definitely, yeah.

No not at all, we decided probably two days before or, if anything, on the Saturday. I think it was the third week in I did the ASOS dress, it was something that I’d bought myself and was just like, I really wanna wear this tonight, can we do long hair? I kind of just had fun with it. There’s no point in looking the same every week and it being boring. I was the only girl and I just felt it was my duty to bring a bit of shirazz – is that a word? Tom was usually in a suit or a shirt, Danny was very ‘All Saints’ with the jeans and the waistcoats and then you had Will who obviously wore his own clothing line.

AFTER THE INJURY TO YOUR FOOT LAST YEAR, IS THIS THE SUMMER YOU WERE WAITING FOR?

This is the summer that I was waiting for. I’m booked up every day this summer and I can’t wait. I’m gonna forget about getting a tan and I’m just gonna go in and I’m gonna have fun and I’m gonna enjoy every single festival and every performance that I have this summer. YOU RECENTLY THANKED YOUR FANS FOR THE SUPPORT BECAUSE THERE’S BEEN A LOT WRITTEN ABOUT YOU. HAS THAT COME AS A SHOCK?

No, no, no. When I first signed to ‘The Voice’ I sat and was very real with my family, with my friends, with my management, with everyone and said, ‘They’re gonna go in on me.’ The British press sadly, they like to build artists up and then rip them down – that’s how they work. Me being the only female, someone who’s very honest who wears my heart on my sleeve, it’s kind of the same boring story that you’ve read about myself, Cheryl, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa – every single female artist that’s on a reality kind of show about talent, it’s the same story just regurgitated. You’ve just gotta laugh and not let it get to you.

BACK TO MUSIC, ‘LASERLIGHT’ IS A BIG ANTHEM.

Yeah, it’s the seventh single from my debut album. Can’t believe it’s been seven singles and I’m very honoured to have David Guetta on the track. Music is my everything so it’s really important that I’m still kind of getting the music out there and people are knowing that that’s what I’m about. I always wanted this to be a single and obviously the David Guetta collaboration just made it that extra bit more special. I loved it and I just wanted it to be put out there, it’s something different, it’s about my fans and it was last single of the album. I thought it was nice to round it off with a thank you to them for keeping me here and feeling good and safe. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH DAVID GUETTA?

Well I was really busy and so was he so I kind of was in the studio and he was on tour. We were kind of back and forth. We’ve never actually been in the same studio at the same time yet. I’ve met him at the EMAs and at various events but not in the studio form.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

IT’S A REAL POWERHOUSE AS WELL.

It’s not easy to sing, it really isn’t. My MD actually, when we did Graham Norton, he came over to me and he goes, ‘Jessie there’s no BV’s on this track’ and I’m like, ‘Yep, I’m aware of that’ and he was like, ‘Do you want us to add some?’ and I was like, ‘Well, there’s not any on the actual song, it’s just me.’ So I did Graham Norton and I sang it for the first time on the show and then I realised how high it was and I was like, ‘Woah’, from the verse to the chorus it’s a big jump. But, you know what, I’m always pushing myself, I don’t ever want to be comfortable otherwise you don’t get better. So I’m happy that people like it, it’s a song that I wrote about my fans. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ALBUM NUMBER TWO.

Album two. What a scary thing. It’s exciting though. It’s early stages, but who knows what it’s gonna sound like. I just want to sing my butt off. I want people to put it on and go ‘woah’. DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU’RE WORKING WITH YET?

I’ve been in the studio with Dr Luke and Claude Kelly again. I’ve had sessions with Cee Lo Green. I’m very much looking forward to going in with will.i.am and that was organised even before we started ‘The Voice’ believe it or not. He was someone that was on my wish list. So now I know him and we can hang out and have fun. So there’s a few other people up my sleeve – not literally living under my sleeve – but artists that I’d love to just get in the studio with. I think it’s gonna be fun this time. I think it’s gonna be music for the moment. I’m just gonna sing as much as I can on this album, which is what I do best, which is why I really need to make sure I sing, sing, sing, yeah. SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR JESSIE J – WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

I want to sing with Beyonce. That’s one of my dream collaborations. SUMMER 2012 | MAYHEM!

CRASHING THE PROMS!

FIRST MOVEMENT The Proms can trace its origins back to 10th August 1895. Musical impresario Robert Newman hit upon the idea of attracting concert hall audiences, who had little to no access to formal classical music recitals, into a higher strand of culture, with a simple goal – he is believed to have said ‘I am going to run nightly concerts and train the public by easy stages. Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music.’

HOW DID HE DO IT? The answer was simple – low ticket prices and a relatively informal atmosphere. Eating, drinking and smoking were all allowed when the first ‘prommers’ (as audience members came to be known) settled in for performances – the move to the Albert Hall was brought about by German bombs in 1941.

HENRY TAKES THE STAGE Classical music. It’s for snobs, or people wanting to appear cultured, right? Not necessarily. For eight weeks each summer (this year, from Friday 13th July to Saturday 8th September) the Proms brings a little sophistication to the season, with the Royal Albert Hall giving over to an enthusiastic celebration of high musical culture.

Conductor Sir Henry Wood was brought on board by Newman to select and oversee works by various composers for performance by orchestra, initially offering a mix of popular and classical music before opting to turn his baton solely to classical by the early 1920s. He is also responsible for the now standard setup of the majority of Proms ensembles.

So stop Bach-ing up the wrong tree and join us in the best seats in the house as we conduct you on a handy guide to a very British institution… Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

Eagle-eyed viewers of BBC Four coverage of the Proms schedule will notice that the first and second violins are placed together to the left of the conductor, while the cellos are to their right, just one of many Wood innovations stumbled upon as he toyed with the possibilities open to him – most of which he seized, exposing audiences to more than 100 British works in ten years (1900–1910) as well as European composers (Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner among them). Indeed, Strauss was so moved by Wood’s performance of his Symphonia Domestica that he wrote “I cannot leave London without an expression of admiration for the splendid Orchestra which Henry Wood’s master hand has created in such a short time.”

MODERN CLASSICAL The first and last nights of the Proms tend to be seen as the main draw – this year’s event starting with a programme of works by English composers, Edward Elgar and Frederick Delius among those getting a look-in. But it’s not all just for the connoisseur, with programmes of classics from stage and screen alongside the serious stuff – Wallace and Gromit (stepping into the breach vacated by the Doctor Who Prom, which had successfully run for two years) and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra among the alternatives on offer this year, should you tire of all the pomp and circumstance.

REBELS WITH A CAUSE

So what do the many visitors to our historic city expect to find? A quaint English town, packed full of tea shops, ice cream stalls and the odd drunken sailor? Maybe, but they’d be disappointed. Doesn’t every high street now look the same? Homogenous rows of shops, selling exactly what you can buy in any other town in the country? Brands that are as familiar to us as our own reflections? Which is why a quiet revolution is taking place. Popping up across our country are community-led co-operatives, bringing together local people, encouraging them to spend their money locally, and offering an alternative to nationally-owned brands. But co-operatives aren’t all lentils and knitting your own muesli. They are businesses, owned and run by their members, whether they are customers, employees or residents.

20 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2012

And any profit made is ploughed straight back into that business, ensuring that money is kept firmly in the local area. With over 5,450 independent co-operatives in the UK, supporting anything from football to fashion, healthcare to housing, wind farms to web design, these social enterprises work in all sectors of the economy. And in Portsmouth we are lucky enough to have a small, but perfectly formed co-operative in the shape of the Southsea Greenhouse. Southsea Greenhouse offers a vegetable box delivery service, supplying locally sourced, fair-trade and sometimes organic produce at competitive prices. Flowers and plants are also on offer, and local crafters can sell and promote their creative output as well.

Working in partnership with various other local groups and organisations, Southsea Greenhouse has its sights set on developing a piece of land to grow plants and vegetables. They also offer volunteer opportunities for local people, and are looking to reinvest their profits to create jobs. With the emphasis on sharing food and skills, it is about bridging and bonding the community, as well as supplying local cafes and shops with fresh produce. And keeping it local! You can find out more about how your local co-operative works by visiting www.southseagreenhouse. co.uk, or pop into the Pyramids between 11am and 3pm at the weekend to chat with the volunteers. Bring on the revolution!

HOT ON THE SCENE!

WHAT IS BURLESQUE? Burlesque as a dictionary definition… Noun – A parody or comically exaggerated imitation of something, esp. in a literary or dramatic work. Verb – Cause to appear absurd by parodying or copying in an exaggerated form: “she struck a ridiculous pose that burlesqued her own vanity”. You may not consider the likes of Monty Python burlesque, but it is! Burlesque isn’t all about the glitz, glamour and booty shaking. Hell…it can be silly! It can be ridiculous! Most importantly it can be a great night out for all the family! Ok… Maybe not ALL the family. Just the ones old enough to catch a bit of variety at your local venue.

HOT OR NOT? There are so many arguments both for and against the burlesque revival. Like any performance field there are both good and bad nights. Car crash evenings and those filled with so many laughs that you want to make a mask out of painkillers just so you can feel your face again! Burlesque is very much like stand-up comedy where the platform is there for people to access. However, when done badly it can leave a sour taste in your mouth and tar what is often a colourful and talented community. But just like any area of performance and the arts, it’s filled to the brim with passionate people who love doing what they do. Investing time, love and money into creating something that they can share with an audience looking to have a great night out.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? There are many different types of performers from varied backgrounds. The forms’ diverse nature stretches as far as Yorkshire-based, axe throwing, sex bomb Anna Fur Laxis, London’s burlesque clown queen Audacity Chutzpah, Brighton’s academic and performance-art based male striptease from British Heart or broadway sized lungs (and chest) of steel from London’s Dolores Delight. So I really must insist that you all do a bit of research, pop down to a burlesque night with an open mind, plenty of room for drinks and get ready to experience a form of entertainment that has been gaining momentum towards a beautiful revival over the past six or so years. Hell… why don’t you pop down to the Kings Theatre in Southsea on July 28th to catch ‘The House of Burlesque’? I’ll be hosting the event, so why not come along and try some Burlesque entertainment on for size? I can promise you a night you won’t forget. Whether you enjoy it or not, you will have seen it for yourself and be able to make your own mind up on the subject that’s on everyone’s lips…. Burlesque!

LA CALLING!

Why England remains a good fit for actor Simon Pegg, despite the lure of LA‌

LA CALLING! From self-confessed “geeky Star Trek fan” to Hollywood a-lister, it has been quite a journey for everybody’s favourite outside, Simon Pegg.

Crispian Mills, the film tells the story of Jack, children’s novelist turned crime writer who becomes obsessed with the idea he will be murdered.

Like the characters he has portrayed in many of his roles, Pegg hobnobbing it around Tinseltown has the feel of the out-of-place misfit achieving against all the odds.

“I don’t think it is really what anyone is expecting,” he says with relish. “I loved it though; it was an enormous challenge and it was lovely to do something as different as this; something with a different feel and look, a different vibe. As an actor you want to do as much different stuff as possible, so it was a treat.”

But Pegg’s success on the other side of the Atlantic has been as improbable as it has been well deserved. As writer, director or actor, 42-year-old Pegg has, over the course of nearly two decades, worked his way from nerdy outcast armed with boyish charm to good mate of Tom Cruise; an unlikely turn of events that Pegg is more than comfortable with.

A Fantastic Fear of Everything is in cinemas now.

“I don’t buy into all this LA snobbery that some people have, I have found everybody to be fine.”

“I really like it in LA,” he says “I don’t buy into all this LA snobbery that some people have, I have found everybody to be fine. People there are all about working, so it suits me. It is a place that likes to get things done, and that suits me too. It is really proactive. You can easily arrange to meet people you want to work with and set things up, and I like that about it.” Is it not strange becoming part of the LA fraternity, making friends with the likes of Tom Cruise? “He’s a regular kinda guy. The same as most people there, actually. I’ve had no problems. Most people are lovely.” Of course, LA is a long way from his Gloucestershire roots, but that is not to say Pegg has suddenly become ‘big time’. For starters, a lot of his recent work has involved stuff that amounts to childhood fantasies, such as ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The New Adventures of Tintin’. And it must also be remembered that much of Pegg’s best creative juice, from his brilliant sitcom ‘Spaced’ to spoof zombiecomedy box office hit ‘Shaun of the Dead’, has been set in London. Even his latest venture sees Pegg at his home-grown best. Set in the east end of London in Hackney, ‘A Fantastic Fear of Everything’ is something of a departure for him. Written and directed by Kula Shaker frontman

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

Pegg was happy that the role of Jack, the neurotic, paranoid lead, allowed him to showcase some different facets of his acting repertoire, while maintaining elements that have made him such a watchable performer. “You never get to show what you can do as an actor until you get given the parts that really stretch you. And this felt like that to me. It felt like it was something that was a little out of the ordinary, but not something that wasn’t in my wheelhouse.” And it is not just his professional life that is changing for Pegg. Having recently departed from his “beloved Crouch End”, the north London suburb that he had famously made his home for nearly a decade, Pegg is settling down. But has he headed off to the bright lights and glamour of Los Angeles? I think you can guess the answer to that... In typical understated Pegg style, he has made the country his new home. “Yeah I’ve moved out to Herefordshire – I went for it!” he laughs. “It was just time to get out of London, to be honest. That may just be looked back on as a fine decision given the pandemonium that is about to arrive with the Olympics,” he chuckles. Was he not tempted for a move to the place that has welcomed him with open arms? “No, I’m not quite ready for that. As much as I like LA, it is always great to come back and work in England. I’ve got a family and I love to spend time with them away from all that. There is no place like home, is there?” SUMMER 2012 | MAYHEM!

WHAT IS GARLIC? Well the official term for our smelly friend is ‘Allium Sativum’ and it’s closely related to the onion and shallot family. Garlic derives from Asia and is over 6,000 years old, used as a staple ingredient in most Asian, European and worldwide food and medicine. Garlic is grown globally, but China is by far the largest producer of garlic, with approximately 10.5 million tonnes (23 billion pounds) grown annually. Garlic can be grown almost anywhere in mild climates – just leave enough room for the bulb to mature and grow.

and was widely used to treat conditions including parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion and low energy. It was also consumed by ancient Roman and Greek soldiers, sailors and the rural classes for treatment of heat exposure and was placed by the ancient Greeks on the piles of stones at crossroads, as a supper for Hecate (The Superstitious Man). There isn’t actually any medical proof but it’s folklore and who are we to argue with that! Hanging garlic, lemon and red chilli at your door or in your shop was also thought by many to ward off potential evil and this is still common practice in India, to this day.

Heat the beef broth with sherry. When the broth reaches boiling point, add garlic and the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste; then simmer for about 30 minutes. Strain out the garlic and reheat. Sprinkle toasted French bread slices generously with Parmesan cheese, then place them in a 425°F (220°C) oven for about 3–4 minutes. Put the hot toast in the bottom of soup dishes; then pour the soup over top. Enjoy!

SUMMER SMOOCH

SO WHAT MAKES A MOUTH MORE KISSABLE? Body language experts agree that one of the most important assets people have to make themselves more attractive is their smile. But don’t let bad breath spoil the moment. The key to becoming more kissable is a clean, healthy mouth, so brushing and flossing every day is key. Even a regular trip to the hygienist can transform how you feel.

LITTLE-KNOWN KISSING FACTS: I]Z hX^Zci^ÀX cVbZ [dg @>HH>C< is philematology. 6 dcZ"b^cjiZ @>HH XVc Wjgc up to 26 calories. 6 <ZgbVc hijYn [djcY i]Vi eZdeaZ who KISS their partner every morning take fewer sick days from work, have fewer car accidents on their way to work and live about five years longer. TIPS FOR A FRESH, KISSABLE MOUTH CHECK FOR BAD BREATHE

If asking a friend is out of the question, simply lick the inside of your wrist, wait a few seconds for it to dry and then sniff. A sour or sickly sweet odour means your breath needs attention.

LOOK AFTER YOUR LIPS If you have a tendency towards dry, cracked lips use a good lip salve regularly. Lips can burn too, so outdoors use a lip salve with a high sun screen factor.

CLEAN YOUR TONGUE Bacteria responsible for bad breath can hide in the rough surface of your tongue, where they breed and release volatile sulphur compounds. So clean your tongue thoroughly with a brush or tongue scraper.

SMOKER’S BREATH ‘Ashtray breath’ will disappear when you choose not to smoke! It will also reduce the chance of getting gum disease and mouth cancer.

FOODS TO AVOID

Highly spiced foods can remain on the breath for a long time. So avoid foods like raw onion, curries, cabbage, eggs, garlic and red meat well before that first date. Eating parsley or fennel may help to counter the odour of garlic or onion.

CLEAN YOUR TEETH Brush thoroughly with a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes twice a day. Clean in between your teeth with floss or special mini brushes – again bacteria causing gum disease and bad breath can accumulate in these hard to reach areas.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER Drinking lots of water regularly will ensure your mouth is well hydrated and helps keep your breath fresh.

MOUTHWASHES AND MINTS Good antibacterial mouthwashes can help to keep breath fresh, but be sure to go for a alcohol-free variety. The occasional sugar-free mint can give you extra fresh breath confidence too.

ALCOHOL AND COFFEE Alcohol can dehydrate your mouth and coffee can make bad breath worse. So – everything in moderation – with lots of water.

FINALLY, USE A MIRROR A quick check for strawberry pips lurking between your teeth to be sure nothing is spoiling your smile! SUMMER 2012 | MAYHEM!

WRITTEN BY CHRIS WALSH

This summer, London hosts the UK’s biggest YouTube gathering, Summer In The City, which this year is on the 17th, 18th and 19th of August. More than 2,500 people are ‘going’ according to the official Facebook event, with almost half as many people on the ‘maybe’ list. Summer In The City has, over its four year history, been a great chance to meet some of the most subscribed and viewed YouTubers. Charlie McDonnell, the first person in the UK to reach 1 million subscribers and one of the site’s most talented young filmmakers, has been to past gatherings. He’s so popular he often draws a crowd of fans eager to know how he has turned his YouTube film-making into a successful full-time job.

YouTube supports popular and hardworking filmmakers like Charlie by offering them a cut of the money raised from the ads placed with their videos and by providing some of the more promising creators with extra training, opportunities to collaborate with peers from across the world and even competitions with big cash prizes, to spend on honing their craft. But with such an enormous site, it’s not always easy to find someone worth watching, so with that in mind, Mayhem! presents some of the finest channels from local people to kickstart your subscription list – if you are, or know someone we’ve missed, why not tweet me @cwalshuk and we might even feature them in a future issue.

A CHAT WITH…

Following her appear ance on las t years X-Factor and nearly a year in the biz, we touch bas e wit h Mis ha B. since get ting the boot! describe your sound in three words?

Fresh, fun and adventurous Your debut single is called ‘Home Run’ – why did you decide release? What meaning does the track have to you?

It just felt right, I feel that it represents me. It’s got a soul Motown influence, a reggae vibe and obviously pop! It started as a ballad that I wrote about an ex. It was a sad song but it went into the studio. We talked about the vibe we were going for, then started the production and I was muttering the words to the ballad and we decided to re-work it! You’re going to be releasing your debut album later this year via Relentless Records. What was the best moment for you when making the album?

I’m still in the studio working on the album and loving every minute of it! You originally come from Manchester, where do you see yourself living in the future?

I’ll always have a home in Manchester. I’ll be working a lot in London and we’ll have to see where I end up! You were only 19 when you entered X Factor and you’re releasing your age - did you always know this is what you wanted to do?

Yeah, I always wanted to do something in music. I started out as an MC. Then busked in Manchester to get rid of my stage fright for a while.

You had a very public experience with X-Factor over claims of bullying. How did you deal with that? Do you think you’re stronger because of it?

Experiences like those can either make or break a person. It thickened my skin. I experienced bullying myself in my teens so to be accused of it was devastating. As a previous X-Factor contestant experience? What are your views on the new show ‘The Voice’?

I think ‘The Voice’ is a great platform for VQ BOE DPNJOH UBMFOU KVTU MJLF 9ď'BDUPS is. X–Factor has definitely been the best experience in my life so far! Do you remain in contact with Kelly Rowland or any of the other contestants?

Yes, I keep in touch with Kelly. She’s a great mentor. I see the other contestants often at Sony and it’s always good to catch up. What do your friends at home think about you being in the public eye and your singing career?

They’re excited about my singing career and are proud of me! You released a mix tape earlier this year with a selection of your own songs and cover songs… why did you decide to showcase your new tracks in this way?

Doing a mixtape is something I’ve always wanted to do. It was only right, for me, that I gave something back to the fans after their love and support on the show.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

You cover TLC’s Unpretty and Beyonce on your mix tape, who did you grow up listening to?

I didn’t cover Beyonce, I just featured her track on the mixtape! She is great though. Too many influences to mention but I love James Brown, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Eminem, Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill. I grew up listening to all these great artists! After performing in front of millions on international television, are the smaller stages like your recent schools tour a walk in the park? Or do you still get nervous before performing?

Oh I still get nervous before I perform for anything. Nerves are good though. I feel like nerves are just part of the process, so it’s fine. When performing on the X Factor you were always well-known for your original fashion and style… does fashion still take a large presence in your stage performance?

Yes absolutely, I love fashion. Love love love fashion! Will there be any up coming tours?

For sure! And I can’t wait!! My website and twitter will have all the latest information. Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Yes – Home run is out on 15th July!!! :) SUMMER 2012 | MAYHEM!

HOT AND SWEATY!

WRITTEN BY KELLY WICKHAM

Remember to start all these exercises slowly and gently and stop if you feel any pain. It’s better to start with as little as three of each and rest and repeat to start with, and build up stamina, rather than going in all guns blazing and doing serious damage. Consult your GB for more advice.

for that beach babe body!

ENJOYABLE PUSHUPS We all know (and loathe) the standard pushup, but hate it or love it, it’s a classic for staying toned. Why not try the workout with your hands wider than shoulder width to increase the intensity on your chest and shoulders. Alternatively guys, ask your girlfriend to play sergeant major and shout commands such as “drop and give me 20 for an extra push. If it’s your triceps you want to see more toned, then bring your hands together into a diamond shape, near your chest centre.

RUSSIAN TWIST

CHAIR LIFT

This exercise helps work your obliques, the flat abdominal muscles on the side of your body (perfect for those muffin tops ladies!). Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet together and keep your chin and abs tight while you lean back slightly. Turn your body to one side and extend your arms out away from your chest, keeping your palms pressed together. Hold and squeeze and repeat on the other side.

Sit yourself on the edge of a chair and place your hands next to your thighs. Lift your body out in front of the chair and keep your feet flat on the floor and make sure your knees stay bent. Lower yourself down so your elbows are about 90 degrees bent and push yourself back up. If you straighten your legs, it will increase the workout. Make sure you avoid this if you have wrist or shoulder injuries.

SQUATS Probably the easiest exercise to perform anywhere (unless there’s a cute guy or girl nearby, as it’s not such a flattering move!) and can really improve muscle definition and strength. Start your moves by lowering yourself just a foot or so, and then slowly work up to deeper squats, the more your muscles become tuned into the exercise. Try adding weights (tins of beans are a good starting point) to maximise the workout.

A VERSION OF HEAVEN If you’re a shopaholic and have a hand shaking, body sweating, leg jumping need to purchase something whenever you enter a store, I’d recommend moving away from Portsmouth or maybe not moving here at all. Especially as the high street is like a sealed pack of bacon, delicious and tempting slices of heaven jammed up right next to each other just asking for you to open it up. Go on, enter through the automatic doors in the ever growing Commercial Road shopping scene, best part, it’s a ten minute walk from Gunwharf Quays shopping centre.

After all of your nerves have been set right and your heart has stopped pumping from the sight of those fifty quid Ralph Lauren jumpers why not go to one of the tasteful restaurants that reside in Gunwharf. Frankie and Benny’s is 20% off on Mondays, Nando’s offers student discount on selected dates and Bar 38 has a specially selected menu and a bonus: 2 for 1 on cocktails. If you’re still feeling guilty after testing out the shopping tide that Portsmouth has to offer there is a simple way to make yourself feel better. Accept the fact that you are helping the economy as the money you spend allows the financial situation to recover. Shopping really does make the world go around.

The definition of marriage varies according to the cultures involved but, broadly speaking, it’s a legal institution or state that ‘officially’ acknowledges a relationship between two people formalising it into a legal and recognised union.

IT WAS ACCEPTED AS THE NORM ONCE WASN’T IT? There was no question about it. You were born, went to school, got a job, married and had children – in that order. Sex before marriage was unthinkable, but this wasn’t just the view of the nation’s elders – it was also the long held and passionately believed view of almost all the nation’s young.

THINGS ARE DIFFERENT NOW Our attitudes towards sex have changed immeasurably. As a result, one of the historic motivations, a ‘perk’ of marriage was lost and the appeal of marriage has changed. Now couples can engage, have fun and move on. Love and affection often doesn’t come into it, let alone eventual commitment through marriage. You can have sex when you like, as much as you like, how you like and as often as you like. 58 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2012

GOING TO THE CHAPEL!

SURELY THERES MORE TO IT THAN THAT? Of course. One of THE most popular reasons couples give today as a reason they choose not to get married, are the costs involved. The average cost of a wedding today is reckoned to be around £11,000, which seems a bit steep. Think about it - blowing £11k on a wedding or putting it down as a deposit on your first house – it’s a no brainer isn’t it?

DO YOUR ‘RIGHTS’ CHANGE WHEN YOU ARE MARRIED? Legally, if you live together, you cannot access your partner’s bank accounts or savings in the event of their death – it will go to their estate and you’d have to make a claim on it based on your relationship. Similarly, if your partner was critically injured or dangerously ill you’d have little or no ‘right’ to dictate the course of their treatment, even to the extent of whether or not a life support machine should be switched off or left on. That decision is deferred to family. Likewise, if your partner dies you have no legal right to any part of their estate and if you are left out of the will, it is highly likely that you will not be able to change this or have grounds to appeal. If you are married, however, pretty much the exact opposite applies.

PRINTERS & STATIONERS Print

THAT SEEMS A TAD UNFAIR Indeed. There has been, and long will be, legal wrangling over the state of marriage against that of simple cohabitation – it’s almost as if the state of marriage exists now simply to keep lawyers in work. The latest wrangle involves the Church recognising same-sex marriages (not to be confused with Civil Partnerships), which it currently doesn’t; and at the present time they are not ‘legal’ in the UK, which is also a tad unfair.

WHY SHOULD I BOTHER THEN? Despite all this, nearly a quarter of a million people still do choose to get married every year. Yes, all that cold hard logic suggests it is an institution that is chasing extinction, but it seems we all still do, despite that, love a wedding. Because, just sometimes, romance beats logic hands down – something even the most hard-hearted of us would find hard to dispute given the look of sheer bliss that adorns most couples on their most special of days. So to hell with all the reasoning‌let romance win the day for once!

SO, WHAT IS IT? The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event held on the streets of the increasingly trendy Notting Hill in London. It’s a cosmopolitan area of London at the best of times and always worth a visit. However, for the two days over the August Bank Holiday it’s the venue of the second largest street festival in the world with music, floats, food, drink, dancing and celebration all on the menu.

WHO ORGANISES IT? It’s led by members of the West Indian community, particularly those with origins or family in Trinidad and Tobago, or ‘Trini’s’ as they are locally known. The original event was organised by Claudia Jones in 1959 as a response to the worsening state of race relations in the UK at the time; race riots having taken place in Notting Hill the previous year. Despite being held indoors, it was a huge success, with the Carnival as it’s known today first being held in 1966.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT? Everything you should from Europe’s largest street festival! The Carnival route is held over a 20-mile course, full of colourful costumes, songs, dance and Caribbean-influenced celebration. There are over forty static sound systems alone (don’t expect any Lady Gaga, these folk have rhythm and taste!) as well as hundreds of Caribbean food stalls. One that everyone recommends is Mama’s Jerk Station, which takes foods such as chicken and sausages and funks them up with a Caribbean twist, aided by unique and very special local sauces. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

HASN’T THERE BEEN TROUBLE THERE? The Carnival has attracted people who used it as an excuse to have a pop at the police or to settle scores with people, but that is pretty much in the event’s past now. Over a million people attend the Carnival so yes, it’s always going to have its share of pickpockets and others who see it as an opportunity for crime. The number of arrests at the event in 2011 was 245 – around 0.025% of those attending.

I’M GOING! WHEN AND WHERE? This year’s Carnival is being held over the Bank Holiday weekend of August 26th–27th. Sunday 26th is designated ‘Children’s Day’ and Monday 27th ‘Adults Day’. The Bands hit the streets from around 9am with the processions expected to end at 7pm. Check for the best public transport links before you go as the local tube stations are sometimes closed for part of the event. Notting Hill Gate tube, for example, is exit-only on both days from 11am to 7pm. High Street Kensington, Holland Park and Queens Park are probably the best alternate tube stations.

ENJOY! It’s big, crowded, loud and frantic! But if you want to dance the day (and most of the night) away and immerse yourself into the life and rhythms of the Caribbean, then there’s nothing better. Visit thenottinghillcarnival.com for more details. SUMMER 2012 | MAYHEM!

Hot property alert !

Christopher Nolan (the man responsible for ‘Inception’), returns to helm for the third and final part of one of DC Comics’ darkest and most iconic characters... Bruce Wayne aka Batman. “I think really, it was about finishing the story ... once you start thinking in terms of Bruce Wayne’s story, you want to see where that goes”. Having completely re-booted the franchise from scratch, Nolan successfully managed to conjure a darker, grittier and more gothic 66 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2012

version of Bruce Wayne’s story that ties closely to the comic universe. Thankfully doing away with the lycra pants and the ‘pows’ and ‘thwaks’; the two previous instalments have seen Christian Bale fill the boots with impressive results that have gained praise from fans, critics and box office accountants alike. This final conclusion to the trilogy sees Batman having to return from a long self enforced absence from Gotham City as he faces quite possibly his greatest enemy yet...

chaos loving, city destroying and downright hard act Bane (played indulgently by Tom Hardy), who is hell bent on sending Gotham (and indeed Batman) to its ashes. Our hero’s not alone though as he (sometimes) has the support of Catwoman (Hathaway), as well as a bevy of returning characters played by solid gold actors such as Oldman, Caine, Freeman and co. MOVIE MAYHEM! Sequel season continues with another blockbusting book adaptation. ‘The Bourne Legacy’ takes an interesting spin on the successful espionage series; largely because it’s a Bourne movie without Bourne in it. Well, that’s not strictly true, trailers so far have referenced Matt Damon’s mug shot on screen, as is his character’s name mentioned ; but it’s been widely confirmed that it does not in any way feature Matt Damon himself as both he and series director Paul Greengrass are completely absent

from this project. Now, with this in mind that normally puts us in straight to DVD spin-off territory but in this case, not so. Weaving itself nicely into Bourne’s universe, writer on the first three movies Tony Gilroy has this time stepped up to the camera to direct, proving that this will be a faithful and ‘official’ addition to the story and series. Playing heavily on the tag line “There was never just one...” The Bourne Legacy sees Avengers Assemble and

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol star Jeremy Renner lead the proceedings as a newly introduced hero Aaron Cross, who becomes embroiled in the events already set by the first three films. Plot details are (naturally) sketchy at this stage but if you do your homework you can already see that Cross is running on the same timeline as Bourne was in the previous efforts, so it’s already gaining appeal for its ‘telling a great story from a different perspective’ angle, giving it some interest factor.

Following five sold-out years, and with a crowd of nearly 3,000 fans in 2011, Southsea Fest is quickly becoming one of the most exciting new music events in Britain. Billed as a ‘real celebration of new music’, each of the 14 venues along Albert Road, including the stunning Kings Theatre at the heart of the festival, will host over 12 hours of live music on 15th September. Not only will 2012 be Southsea Fest’s biggest ever year, but the fun, nautical-themed festival has an explosive history that points to it being the city-based rock event for new music fans. “What Southsea Fest does is put bands with a big show into tiny, sweat-box venues, and let them explode into the audience. When Pulled Apart By Horses played the tiny 100 capacity Edge Of The Wedge venue in 2010, fans hung onto the rafters of the building while guitarist James Brown spent three songs crowd-surfing. Some people are depressing. And no matter how much you try to bribe, reason with or threaten them they’re going to bring you down too. They might have a terrible job, bad relationship or a lifetime of horrendous choices. Or they might just be a ‘Mood-Hoover’ who talks about their perfect life in such unremitting, excruciating detail it will suck your buzz away until it’s nothing but a metaphorical husk. In the end you’ll be exhausted, not to mention, depressed.

You’ve been standing in the corner of the room, mustering the courage to talk to the hottie you’re fairly sure you want to spend the rest of your life with. The fact that you decided this after a few drinks in no ways diminishes the importance of this decision. Just after you’ve taken your first step across the room, you see the Lothario/ Temptress move in. And instantly your drunken hopes of future happiness with the person of your dreams evaporate, because the Lothario/Temptress is more attractive, funnier and, in all likelihood, far more confident than you are. But you still have your now fairly empty bottle of spirits, so you’re the real winner, right?

‘BOB’/‘BOBETTE’

THE ALCOHOL SUPERNOVA THE DOWNER

THE LOTHARIO/ TEMPTRESS

Some people laugh in the face of moderation. The Alcohol Supernova doesn’t. The Alcohol Supernova drinks in the face of moderation. The Alcohol Supernova is going to drink far too much, far too quickly, meaning that the party will contain roughly 100% more puke than anyone wanted or expected. There may also be an attempt at singing, with lyrics artistically replaced by more drinking, more puking and occasional lyrics from a completely different song. And if they get their claws into you‌ you’ll be the one that has to get them home at the end of the night!

There is a ‘Bob’/ ‘Bobette’ at every party. You’ll be sitting on a sofa, nursing your favourite beverage, when ‘Bob’/ ‘Bobette’ will infiltrate your personal space, taking advantage of your rising inebriation to blindside you with pleasant conversation. The reason for the ‘Bob’/‘Bobette’ is that you simply don’t know enough about them to be any more specific. You know them, you just don’t know how or where from. Even worse they seem to remember every detail about you. In order to minimise your guilt, and damage to their feelings, you need to extricate yourself from this situation ASAP.

It’s really not about being a male or female; making a living out of being a jockey is difficult because there are a lot of us and it’s extremely competitive. I only found it as hard as every other jockey has, but I was lucky to have Michael Bell (trainer). He probably had more difficulty persuading the owners to put me on their horses – I just have to ride them. To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

ON THE HOOF AT GOODWOOD! What qualities are needed to be a good female jockey?

What do you do to relax away from racing?

The ingredients of being a great jockey are the same, whether you’re male or female. You need hard work, 100% dedication, focus, a huge love of racing and you have to be a bit self-critical, as you learn more that way.

During the height of the flat racing season I am very busy riding, driving, racing, sleeping and not much else! But, when I get the chance, I love hanging out with my friends and my sisters; it’s important to get out of the racing bubble to really relax. When I’m not so busy out of season I like to go and watch other sporting events, such as the boxing.

The media frequently sees you as a ‘pin-up’ for your sport. Do you relish or ignore the attention this brings you?

I don’t really take too much notice, as it is really important that it doesn’t get in the way of my racing. What have been the main challenges that you’ve had to overcome in your career?

After my head injury back in 2009, it was a real battle to get my jockey licence back – I felt fine but had been stood down for a year. Luckily the situation was resolved, but I was still out of racing for months. When you’re not being a jockey you’ve said you like to paint your nails and unleash the ‘girly girl’ within…do you have to disguise that part of you on the track?

You won the Group one on horse ‘Dream Ahead’ who you’ d never ridden before. How important is it to establish a relationship with the horses?

As a jockey, getting to know a horse quickly is all part of your job and a skill that you must learn to do quickly. It isn’t essential that you ride a horse beforehand – sometimes you have to get to know the horse in the time that it takes to get from the Parade Ring to the start of the race – but it is also important to do your homework to see what the horse was like in previous races.

Brilliant – he has helped me since I started out and he’s given me massive opportunities which have made me successful. Having worked for him for so long, I know how he likes me to ride the horses and we both know what each other is thinking.

I hope it helps to take racing to a wider audience and that it sheds some light into a life in racing. It is important for any industry to keep up with society and I hope that’s what we are helping racing to do by having a presence on Twitter. After racing on numerous courses do you have a particular favourite?

My favourite racecourses are Great Yarmouth and Ascot. Talk us through the process of preparing for a race?

A lot of homework, reading the form of the horse you are riding and the opponents. Watching the previous races of the horse you’re riding and the key opponents. What are you most looking forward to this season?

Competing in the big racing fixtures and in the QIPCO British Champions Series races; all jockeys live to compete on the big stage!

I don’t have to disguise it, I just don’t have time to do it during the season when I’m riding; basic things like clothes shopping and hair-dressing just don’t fit in during the flat season. But I’m not scruffy and I don’t turn up to the races with straw in my hair, I still make an effort and you’ll see me in a dress during Royal Ascot when I’m not riding. What is it like to work under a trainer as successful as Michael Bell?

You maintain a successful online presence through your website and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. What do you think/hope this brings you and racing as a whole?

Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers?

Come racing whenever you can, but especially on the 20th October at Ascot this year. It’s the finale of the QIPCO British Champions Series – QIPCO British Champions Day – which offers some of the best flat racing in the world, as well as being a great day out with an amazing atmosphere. You won Sportswoman of the Year at the Glamour Awards… do you see yourself as a role model for young women?

I wouldn’t call myself a role model, but I do think that the young female apprentice jockeys have noticed that it can be done and have realised you can compete with the men on a level playing field.
