keeping diabetes at bay revealed: young Brits need a different approaCh to type 2 diaBetes treatment A recent study has revealed that the medicines used to treat diabetes in adults are not as effective in slowing the progression of Type 2 diabetes in young people. These findings raise alarms for young people because in recent years, Type 2 diabetes among the youth is a growing problem. The findings from the study suggest that there should be new approaches to treat adolescents with the Type 2 diabetes. Our health experts share their advice for the best approaches young people can take to help manage Type 2 diabetes, naturally.

Control your sugar intake Control your stress Sugar is the biggest culprit in our health in general and in particular our risks of most degenerative diseases including Type 2 diabetes. Firstly, avoid savory foods that contain sugar. Secondly, stop adding sugar to your hot drinks and other foods. Next, have a look at the sweet foods you’re consuming on a regular basis – those cereal bars that seem 'healthy’ may be loaded with sugar. Instead, try preparing your snacks, such as homemade granola bars with coconut sugar instead of refined sugar. Dried fruit can contain three times the sugar of fresh fruit, so choose fresh fruit and benefit from the antioxidants too.

eat dark green veggies Dark green veggies, such as spinach, kale, rocket and watercress are super-low in carbohydrates, calories and are high in fibre, meaning they have a very low glycaemic index and help to keep blood sugar levels stable. They’re rich in antioxidant nutrients, too, such as flavonoids and carotenoids – these may help to protect against some of the complications of diabetes, such as heart disease.

avoid paCkaged snaCks Pre-packaged snacks are low in nutrition and high in easily digested carbs that can spike your blood sugar. Eat raw carrots and a handful of nuts as a snack instead.

8 | Issue 50

Millennials are living increasingly busy lifestyles that can, unfortunately, come with the side-effects of increased stress levels. Intense periods of stress can cause your glucose levels to increase, so controlling your stress is a top priority. You may not be able to control the stress but you can control how it affects you physically and also you can make sure you are not making it worse. There is a chance that your pattern of eating is subconsciously telling your body that it is under even more stress. If your blood sugar levels fluctuate (as they do even more so for women), your body will be releasing adrenaline which is the same hormone it releases when you are under stress. Try to keep your blood sugar levels and energy levels stable by eating something every three hours. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a snack mid-morning and one mid-afternoon, with no longer than three hours between.

exerCise is vital Staying active is vital. Exercise helps the body respond to insulin, keeps blood sugar levels down and helps manage your weight. You can get the greatest benefits by including both aerobic exercise such as cycling, dancing or jogging and strength training with weights or bodyweight exercises.

Couples’ guide to getting a dog written By mia haBens

Getting a dog is a big commitment for a couple and should never be entered into lightly. Mayhem! is here with a few things to consider

10 | Issue 50

make sure you’re ready

do your researCh

You need to have some serious conversations about whether you’re ready to look after a dog, not just now but in 10–15 years time. Dogs aren’t just a commitment in so far as walking them and picking up their mess, they’re a huge fi nancial commitment too and will dictate how you live you’re lives for the foreseeable future. No more swanning off to festivals or going on long weekends for example (unless you take the dog with you). You also need to consider how you’d handle going on holiday or deal with life changing decisions such as moving house, having kids, travelling, the list goes on.

Firstly have a discussion about what you both want from a dog. If one of you wants a big, boisterous dog to play with and the other wants one to carry around in a little bag you’re going to have problems from the outset. Once you have a criteria of what you both want, you can go and look at the breeds available to suit your needs. For example, if you suffer with allergies then a poodle or short-haired dog which doesn’t shed would be high on your priority list. Also try to be flexible and don’t set your sights on a particular breed just yet, you may think they’re cute, but they may be completely unsuited to your lifestyle.

Advertise with us 01243 430592

do even more researCh

training is ongoing

Once you’ve decided on a couple of breeds for your shortlist, do even more research. Many dogs have genetic problems which could lead to huge vet bills as they get older. Alsatians, for example often suffer from arthritis in their hips and spaniels are particularly prone to gum disease. That’s not to say you shouldn’t go for those breeds, just go into it forearmed with as much information as possible. Visit your local dog shelter and ask any questions you may have. They’ll be happy to help and would rather that than end up with your dog when you decide you can’t look after it any more.

Teaching your dog to be obedient is a lifelong task. While most dogs will learn basic commands quickly, if you don’t enforce your ‘rules’ early on and become lapse in your training your dog will quickly realise and start misbehaving. Continue your training while on your walks too. Most dogs will perform in the comfort of your own home when you have a treat in your hand, but the real trick is for them to do it when they have distractions around them and you have empty hands!

get insuranCe Pet insurance can be expensive too, upwards of £30 a month in most cases. However it will save you a world of pain if anything happens to your dog. A broken leg could cost over £1000 to set if you pay in one go, so that monthly payment is well worth it to avoid those unexpected bills. It’s not just accidents to worry about, Schnauzers are particularly susceptible to diabetes, for example, and your insurance will contribute toward its care for the duration of the illness within policy limits. Don’t be tempted to put it off, if you get insurance once an issue has already been diagnosed the policy may not cover it or you could end up paying more.

Be soCiaBle Introduce your dog to as many experiences as possible when they’re young. Things like other people, children, other dogs, cats, people on bicycles, people with beards, loud noises, cars, roads etc etc etc! Your dog needs to understand that these are part of their world and nothing to be feared. Fear is usually the cause of wider issues like aggression so the more you do the better your dog will be. Take your dog to puppy socialisation classes where they can learn basic commands and play with other dogs in a controlled environment. This is great for their development. If you’re getting an adult dog, make sure you find out if they have any behavioural issues first and see an expert trainer to see if it can be corrected, it will pay dividends later.

Mayhemmag Themayhemmagazine

You’ve all heard the saying ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ and nothing could be further from the truth. However if you have thought about it fully, done all your research and are committed to their welfare and training, you will have a happy, loyal and well behaved friend for life!

tender loving Care

There’s defi nitely some truth in this idiom; fatty foods will make you feel sluggish and sweets lead to an energy slump when the sugar leaves your system. It’s ok to indulge, but the more fruit, vegetables and pulses you eat, the more refreshed you’ll feel. If this still isn’t enough you can look for everyday aphrodisiacs such as chocolate, strawberries, almonds and garlic.

Take advantage of the post school holiday price dips and get away, just the two of you. Never underestimate the power of a crackling fi replace and a change of scenery to get in the mood. If you can’t stretch to a short break away, why not try something closer to home? A walk hand-inhand in the crisp frosty air is sure to blow the cobwebs away and it’s a good excuse to snuggle up all warm and cosy afterwards.

Stress can be a prime factor in loss of libido, so take some time to pamper yourself and each other. Share a bath or take time to give each other a massage. Take the pressure off by not expecting these to lead to sex (though if it does, who’s complaining?). Remember all those cutesy little things you used to do when you were first going out? Try some of them again! Even a little post-it note on the bathroom mirror can be enough to show your other half that you’re thinking of them.

Communication should be a staple in any relationship. If you’re upset with someone tell them why. If you’re grateful, let them know. It’s no surprise that couples who listen and talk to each other have longer and more fulfi lling relationships than those who regularly ignore or give up on conversations. So sit down and talk to one another, you might even learn something!

It’s perfectly natural for relationships to become routine and, let’s face it, a little boring. Liven things up by trying something new. And just so you know, ‘trying something new’ is not confi ned to the bedroom. Why not cook something different together or going for a drive somewhere new can be enough to rekindle that spark within you both.

If you have been putting off (and putting off) trying a new sport or any type of physical exercise for that matter, until after the New Year, take time to consider exactly what Britain is like in January. Icy winds, frost, blizzards and below zero temperatures are sure to derail all of your best intentions and, before you know it, it’ll be spring and that will be that for another year.

sand yaChting If you like the seaside, but prefer not to get cold and wet – try sand yachting (aka land yachting or land sailing). There are a lot fewer things for you to have to fiddle with than in a real boat and a second-hand craft can be yours for as little as £200. But, beware, if you get a taste for it, a top-of-the-range model can easily cost 20 times that.

mountain Biking If you already have a bike then great! If not, you can usually get a half-decent one for around £150, both in store and online. A more common problem is finding a good spot to ride it. Luckily, there are lots of bike sites available online to help solve that problem, with details of routes through local beauty spots such as Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Eartham Wood, Duncton Down, and Kingley Vale.

did you know that you can’t fly a kite higher than 200ft at night unless it has lights?

mountain Boarding

kiting

This sport was developed by those perpetual adrenaline junkies, snowboarders, who were looking for some sommer fun. It’s best described as a hybrid between skateboarding and snowboarding. Your feet are strapped to the board, much like snowboarding, but if you fall there is no soft landing, like skateboarding…exhilarating!

One for adults and children alike – or just the child in you. This is a popular sport on most Portsmouth beaches and parks as soon as the autumnal breezes pick up. Portsmouth also has its own International Kite Festival on Southsea Common. Is this a sport? Well, the amount of kite kit available suggests so, and trying to wrestle with large pieces of wind-battered sail for hours will certainly give you a workout! There are some rules however – for example,

Most have us have been canoeing at some stage in our lives, probably at some forced-fun school trip a hundred years ago. But it’s fantastic exercise and a great way to get back to nature and relax. You will need a licence to drop a boat in one of Britain’s many waterways, but this comes free when you become a member of Canoe England (membership £32.75 a year). They can

also hook you up with a club in your area so you can get started. You can also get a used canoe for about £100 – a small price to pay for paddling down a willow-lined canal and taking in the autumn paradise.

fell running If you’re a keen jogger, then why not take it to the next level this autumn? Fell running is basically off-road running, but hardcore fell runners take part in competitions where their navigational skills are also tested – a bit like high-speed orienteering! It’s also a great way to keep super-fit and take in the Hampshire countryside and make new mates. If you do decide to try out any of these sports this autumn, have fun and enjoy, but always make sure you’re hooked up with professionally-trained experts who can advise and guide you on the correct equipment and can show you how to have fun safely.

Can eating change our complexion?

Beauty from within is becoming the major new trend. We reveal the top foods and beauty products for great healthy looking skin. antioxidants Antioxidant nutrients (vitamins A, C and E, some of the B complex vitamins, selenium, manganese and zinc) play a major role in destroying free radicals in the body. The main victim of free radical damage in skin is collagen, which keeps skin looking plump and elastic. Uncooked, highly coloured fresh fruit and vegetables are the best places to fi nd high levels of antioxidants. Choose dark berries, nuts, coloured organic vegetables such as broccoli, carrot, kale, spinach, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.

essential fatty aCids Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) come in two classes, Omega-3 and Omega-6, and it’s Omega 3 that have the most effect on skin. The body can’t make EFAs, so they have to come from our food. Oily fish such as sardines, tuna and salmon are good sources of EFAs, as are nuts and seeds, organic eggs, and soya beans. A quick way to increase your intake is to use sesame, rapeseed, walnut, soya bean or fl ax oils in the kitchen. Add them in their raw state to your food rather than heating them which change their nutritional quality. At the same time, you should reduce your intake of saturated and processed fats because these can cancel out the beneficial effects of EFAs.

vitamin e Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which works with selenium and has a powerful action against free radical damage. It also helps the skin retain moisture. Premature wrinkles, pale skin, acne, easy bruising and slow wound healing may indicate a deficiency. Choose nuts such as Brazils and almonds as well as seeds and avocados.

vitamin itamin C A potent antioxidant, vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen. Cut back on smoking and overdoing the sun exposure which drains vitamin C from the skin. Choose citrus fruits, Brussels sprouts and tomatoes.

vitamin a Vitamin A is responsible for keeping body parts moist including supple skin cells. Dry, fl aky skin can indicate a deficiency. Choose oily fish and eggs for vitamin A. Or for plant sources of beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A choose organic carrots, beetroot and sweet potato.

honey Honey is a popular option to soothe dry irritable skin. Raw honey has antisceptic and antibacterial properties and natural sugars which attracts moisture to the skins surface. A honey and oatmeal facepack calms red angry skin and a spoonful of honey will also help digestion move easier helping the body detox through the bowels and not through the pores. We recommend Bee Mercy Th yme honey which has antiseptic qualities due to thymol. visit WWW.BalanCedWellness.Co.uk

zinC Zinc plays an important role in the immune system as well as manufacturing collagen in the skin. A deficiency of zinc can lead to stretch marks, blemishes, white spots on fi ngernails, and dandruff. Choose seafood, eggs, nuts and wholegrains to increase your intake of zinc.

Breakfast

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Aim to eat breakfast 30 minutes after waking up in order to replenish your blood sugar levels. Th is should be the largest meal of your day and allows for the most carbohydrates.

The time between breakfast and lunch can seem like forever. These healthy snacks will keep you going and avoid the temptation of the vending machine. Go for potassium fi lled snacks, such as a banana or dried fruit.

You’ll be ready for lunch around four hours after breakfast. Choose something that fi lls you up for the rest of your working day, instead of falling into a food coma as soon as you’ve finished. Something fresh and lean that’s bursting with Iron.

We usually crave sugary treats during an afternoon slump. Opt for a healthy nutritious snack to keep the cravings at bay, and to make the end of the working day more productive. A low fat calcium snack is perfect.

You should be eating dinner approximately three hours after your afternoon snack, but not too late or your food will take longer to digest. At this time you need protein, as well as some low carbohydrates.

Avoid anything too heavy at this time of night. If you’re still hungry when you wake up in the middle of the night, opt for lighter choices such as milky drinks, or cheese and crackers.

Add a dash of lemonade to help the mixture blend, top up with a mug full of crushed ice per drink and then throw it all into a blender until it reaches the consistency you desire. Garnish with strawberry or lime, again the choice is yours, then serve.

Combine a dash of elderflower cordial, a squeeze of lime juice, a shot of grapefruit juice into your champagne fl utes. Top up with chilled lemonade and serve. No garnish needed with this one; the fl ute will make all the fi rst impression needed!

Serve each friend with their own glassful of sharp strawberry mocktail, or make up a jug and pour it out – frozen margarita style!

Th ink how ‘Pinterest’ you could make some of your favourite mocktails look – better yet, create your own; mix a cocktail for each of your friends with ingredients you know they’ll love! Either way, enjoy!

Across the nation plastic straws are being faded out, banished from bars and pubs forever, making way for biodegradable paper straws. Local pubs are leading the way in this fundamental change and we meet one of our favourties, The King Street Tavern in Southsea. This super little local has really made its mark in Portsmouth and really understands how important our environment is. written By Chantelle Wyatt

the Final straw Plastic straws have been ditched and local people support the change. We met Sean Marshall, Landlord who said “We all know that plastic straws need to go and it’s time to just make the switch and be greener. We’re a pub that wants to be a part of positive changes and make a difference.” Straws take about 200 years to break down in the environment, increasing the presence of microplastics in landfills and oceans. Both straws

and the broken down plastics are ingested by marine life, ending up in our seafood and harming marine ecosystems. It’s a no-brainer that this needs to stop! Portsmouth has a lot to offer and modern thinking pubs like the KST are leading the way in getting closer to a better future for us all. Our seaside city is invested in changing the state of the ocean and it’s coastal living people who are making big contributions. Get involved.

party games If your food leaves guests wanting to grab a McDonalds on their way home, then you can still redeem yourself by choosing some excellent memorable party games at the end of the meal, (when they’ve had a few too many). Here are a couple of ideas:

1 how to throw written By fiona stanton

One person at a time has to tell a ridiculous story that’s hard to believe, it can either be a truth or a lie, have an opening line and the other diners will ask you questions to figure out if you’re lying or not.

a stress-Free dinner party 2 There’s nothing quite like getting around a table with your nearest and dearest to share a meal and a few bottles of plonk, but for the host it can be a very stressful event. We’re here with a few simple tips so everyone can have a good time, including you! relax Most importantly, try not to stress out. It’s a casual dinner party and the guests should be happy to see you and enjoy your company. Take shortcuts where possible, buy appetisers that are simple, “chip and dip, anyone?”

apologise, after all that’s how it’s supposed to look and taste.

keep it simple

laugh it off

Stick to dishes that you know well and are easy to cook. That way there’s little room for mistakes. Try not to experiment too much unless you’re a seasoned pro.

Your guests aren’t expecting the meal to be perfect and if your dish is slightly overcooked – at least your food mess-ups will make the dinner party memorable. Don’t take yourself too seriously, enjoy the evening and laugh with your friends. Try to downplay any mistakes and never

Do all the peeling and chopping in advance – cutting down on your cooking time gives you more time with your guests. Try setting your table in the morning and don’t forget the dessert.

Grab some post-its and play the good old fashioned celebrity game. Player A has to secretly write down a celebrity on a post-it, player B sticks it on their forehead and player B has to guess who it is.

With the same post-its, jot down a few funny phrases like, “I used to be a skateboard champion,” pop these cheeky phrases under each person’s dinner plate and try to throw it into the conversation and see if anyone notices. Whatever you do, don’t play Monopoly.

Clean as you go If you don’t have a dishwasher wash up as you go to cut down on the pile of dishes you’ll be faced with at the end of the night. Why not ask a friend who does have one if you can host at theirs?

set the tone Nobody wants awkward silences at a dinner party so have some ‘atmosphere’ music in the background, set it low so it’s not overpowering, but just enough to break the silence.

always ask “Can I bring anything?”, so why not take them up on it?

dim the lights Don’t make it uncomfortably romantic among friends, but dim the lights a little – think mood lighting. Use candles and soft lighting. It’ll make you and your guests look prettier and set the mood for the evening.

If you are throwing a dinner party for a large number of guests, think about personality clashes, especially if they don’t know each other. Party games can be an ice-breaker and help everyone feel relaxed. Pick an “Anchor Guest” who is proactively funny and choose the guests around him/her.

del amItrI After a hiatus of over a decade Del Amitri have once again hit the road with their latest tour, we catch up with Justin Currie to find out what’s been going on. del amitri were on hiatus for over a decade, what brought you back to the stage? Well, after we reformed for a few weeks of gigs in 2014 we enjoyed the experience so much (after initially being very sceptical and trepidatious) that we always thought we’d do it again someday. An offer to do Edinburgh Castle came in, and having made such an arse of it in the nineties we thought it might be good to try and make amends. And four years felt like a decent enough period of time to stay out of people’s faces. So we’re now just doing a week of shows.

32 | Issue 50

Will the band be playing any new material on this tour? We deliberately avoided that in 2014, we just wanted to do a comprehensive review of our output between 1985 and 2002. We called it “The A to Z of Us” and we felt new stuff would have fogged the glass. Besides which, we were so paranoid about trying to attain the same standards of our heyday that we feared the whole audience might sod off to the bogs as soon as we played something unfamiliar. Th is time we’ve given ourselves a little more leeway so we’ll try some new things and see if we can make them fi t.

Advertise with us 01243 430592

is there any sign of a new del amitri album on the horizon? We snuck out a couple of tracks a few years ago in a far flung corner of the web. They’re still fluttering there, uneaten husks. We are discussing what might be justifiable. We have songs. We just don’t quite have a raison d’être. you say you “made an arse of” playing edinburgh Castle in the nineties. how so? We stormed the stage three seconds after being warned by some police chief that we’d be held criminally responsible if we didn’t tell standing folk to sit down and proceeded to play the opening riff of The Ones That You Love Lead You Nowhere for three minutes due to a catastrophic bit of bass guitar tuning which meant I couldn’t cue the song. This shredded our nerves. We were playing to 8,000 people – by far the biggest headline show we’d done at that point. We never regained equilibrium. And I was wearing a kilt. I’m almost tempted to do the exact same thing again just to blot out that particular nightmare with a new version. This time deliberate. a great many bands of the eighties and nineties have re-formed to milk the “heritage” circuit. how do you view your own place within the contemporary live scene? We’ll milk any teat proffered. We’re too old for this game so are grateful for any opportunity to make fools of ourselves – wouldn’t you be? As for the heritage tag, we were heritage before we were thirty. We gave up trying to be modern in 1986. We grew moustaches and sideburns in a sarcastic nod to the grim, unhip man-rock that clogged the seventies. If we had stuck to being chirpy, angst-riddled indie boys then this sort of thing might be harder to pull off. We always sold ourselves as a working band; plodders, drinkers and grouches. We just about still qualify as men, although it won’t be long before we turn into old ladies, as all men are destined to do. By that point we might actually be a decent group.

There is to be a del amitri book published this summer. is this a cynical commercial tie-in? It’s nowt to do with us. An Australian lunatic called Charles Rawlings-Way decided to write the whole sorry tale down a few years ago. It felt rude not to help him out with a few interviews and photos. He’s a lovely man and I enjoyed waffling on to him on Skype with a glass of red wine while he was having his breakfast in Adelaide. I’ve read a proof and it’s remarkably comprehensive. It’s a non-stop romp through twenty years of sex, drugs and quality biscuits. It’s a bit embarrassing, really – we don’t merit that sort of scrutiny – but I’m overjoyed that Mr. Rawlings-Way saw fit to attempt such an onerous task. I do come out of it looking like a bit of an arsehole which goes to show that not everything is fake news. you formed del amitri in your teens and are now touring in your fifties. how have things changed for you as a performer? The further you travel from your youth the less bloody vital every aspect of the project becomes. It goes from being a do-or-die obsession, heartbreaking and ecstatic in equal measure, to a warmly pleasurable bit of mild exertion. You can’t hit the frenzy of yore but you can nail things with a little more solidity and authority perhaps. The angst ebbs and the confidence flows. Not that you’re not still besides yourself with nerves every time you step into the light. But it’s a mission and it’s unfinished. There’s always something more to say.

top oFF Who doesn’t love a convertible? From the evergreen ‘best-bang-for-your-buck’ Mazda MX-5 through to the posh McLaren 570S Spider, true topless aficionados know there are many reasons for having one on your driveway – but, bragging rights aside, most reasons are sensory.

audi tt roadster Audi’s TT Roadster is great to look at, sharp to drive and has a magnificent interior. You also get that special wind-in-the-hair experience. It has always been one of the most stylish convertibles in its class and the newest generation is no exception. It’s better to drive than ever, offers great performance and is as high quality a product as you’d expect from Audi. There’s a great range of turbocharged engines and is the only car in its class to offer diesel options. Even in its less glamorous specifications, the TT Roadster is more than a match, offering a combination of design, quality, performance and economy that puts it ahead of the pack. From £30,605.

Exposed as you are to nature’s elements, there is a heightened sense of motion, the rushing of passing scenery, the fragrance of fresh air as dappled shade flickers over your Ray-Bans. The other is all to do with hearing; the arresting dissonance of a well-tuned engine, a gasping turbo or two and a canorous finale via a handsome set of rear steel pipes. Here’s just a few of the more popular open top cars available right now for you to sizzle in this summer!

mini ConvertiBle Few cars can put a smile on your face like a MINI and losing the roof doesn’t alter the way it drives, so it’s still great fun thanks to a superb chassis, go-kart-style handling and brilliant engines. Opt for the 1.5-litre Cooper and it’ll be cheap to run, but just as enjoyable to drive. Choose from Cooper D and Cooper SD diesels for the best economy, while Cooper S and John Cooper Works models are available if you want more power. Space in the rear is cramped and the boot is even smaller, but you’ll probably forget about that once you put the roof down and find a twisty B-road. Choose from a huge range of paint colours, wheels, seat trims and roof designs to personalise. From £19,795.

mazda mx-5 The rear-drive two-seater Mazda MX-5 is a great driver’s car, roof up or down. Unprecedented success over the last 25 years has elevated Mazda’s diminutive roadster to become the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car. We especially love them here in the UK, with around half of all Mazda MX-5s sold in Europe going to British buyers. The latest Mazda MX-5 has gone back to its roots in a bid to offer genuine lightweight sports car thrills. The fabric roof stows manually behind the driver and passenger, but if that’s too much effort for you, there’s the electric hard-topped RF (retractable fastback).*From £18,995.

fiat 500C CaBrio

smart fortWo CaBrio From £16,995.

The reborn Fiat 500 proved a smash hit when it arrived in 2007, so Fiat started to expand the range and the 500C cabrio arrived soon after. The fabric roof retracts while the roof pillars and side windows stay in place, providing a wind-in-the-hair driving experience without radically changing the 500’s iconic shape or compromising safety. The controls are light – this is a city car after all – and the Fiat is easy to drive and park. All 500s are cheap to run as the small engines sip fuel. The 1.2-litre engine musters 60.1mpg and emits just 110g/km. Insurance groups range from 11 to 17, which is quite low for a convertible. From £14,460.

BmW 2 series Following BMW’s new naming policy, the 2 Series Convertible takes the baton from the open-roofed BMW 1 Series. Now, the design is far better resolved, with a sleek appearance and well-judged proportions from every angle. In typical BMW fashion, there’s a plethora of engines, with four petrols and three diesels ranging from 134hp to 335hp. It’s possible to enjoy the breeze while returning up to 69mpg in 218d and 220d versions, while the high-powered M240i can get from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds. Choose this engine and you’ll want to drop the roof just to hear the 3.0-litre straight-six sing as you go through the gears. From £28,260.

ds 3 CaBrio Best thought of as a premium supermini with a very large sunroof, the DS 3 Cabrio is based on the DS 3 hatchback. It’s a stylish proposition with a full-length, poweroperated fabric roof to open up its comfortable interior to the elements; it can be folded back halfway, or fully retracted in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 70mph. An economical range of 1.2-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines is available, with the most frugal diesel returning an average of 81mpg and the fastest petrol giving a 0-62mph time of nine seconds. It’s not the quickest convertible around, but the halfwayhouse roof makes it a great year-round choice. From £19,590.

merCedes C-Class Mercedes has vast experience in designing convertibles and even with the roof stowed, the interior is impressively refined and free from buffeting. With it up, the multi-layered fabric and clever design means there’s little difference between the Cabriolet and Coupe on the move in refinement terms. The 2.1-litre diesel is a bit chatty though, which makes Mercedes’ turbocharged petrol engines better suited to cruising with the roof down. The C200 and C300 produce 181hp and 242hp, and return around 42mpg. If you want sports car levels of performance and a more sonorous audio note, the AMG C43 is fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 producing 362hp. From £40,349.

range rover evoque When the Range Rover Evoque was launched back in 2011, its combination of concept car looks and a premium feel brought something new to the small SUV class. Now, there’s a convertible, too! It can be had with Land Rover’s new generation 178hp diesel engine while, for more pace, there’s a 237hp petrol engine. There’s also the option to specify a nine-speed automatic gearbox over the standard issue six-speed manual. AWD as standard also means the Convertible impresses off-road. All models come with xenon headlights, a Meridian stereo, leather upholstery, satnav and huge 20-inch alloy wheels. From £46,450.

From teen it-girl to rural blogger, Blake Lively is stepping back from the spotlight, and with good reason. “I don’t want a quIeter lIfe, necessarIly, but I certaInly want one wIth less chaos and more stabIlIty” Blake Lively spent much of her time growing up in California, hanging out at the beach where surfing was one of her passions. Although she had the occasional mishap – “I once cracked my nose” – the tall, blonde actress loved the feeling of energy that riding on the waves provided, yet one of the movie world’s healthiest, foodiest, liveliest actresses is perhaps starting to mellow. That would certainly explain her decision to play the character Emily in new film A Simple Favor. This diversion is one altogether closer to a core thriller territory, where mysticism and murder replace the bubbly, ballsy resonances of so much of what she has taken to in the past. In the script, Emily, the friend of a small-town blogger (Anna Kendrick), goes missing, with the movie opening up into a story of betrayals and reversals, a dead body and the revolving question of who is duping whom.

only once we got into character would the fun come to the fore... which is the opposite of what you would think because we were so stressing it before the scenes.” “It comes down to the fact, as an actress, I love not knowing what’s going to happen next. I love going into a movie and being completely surprised, and it’s so rare that that happens.” The 30-year-old Lively is married to Canadian heartthrob Ryan Reynolds, who recently scored the biggest hit of his career with the billion-dollar blockbuster Deadpool. They live in the quiet town of Bedford in upstate New York together with their daughters, James (yes, really), and Ines, in what appears a picture-perfect life where the sum total of their potential as big-screen performers essentially comes down to how well they can balance family life with work.

“I know this is a darker side,” she begins. “I think it’s “There has always been something special about just something in someone that you haven’t seen Ryan, and I knew that from very soon after we met,” before, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not always been she says. “I guess I knew he would always be my best there. The characters are just a bit over the top, friend for life - that was the biggest thing to me. I’d they’re best and worst friends, I guess. They’re two never known anything like the friendship that I had women who come together and the storyline embeds with him. Every day we’d have no doubt brought on by a lifestyle that focuses to diagram the plot out before we started working on family values.

“When you have a family and settle down the things that seemed important before just aren’t,” she says. “I don’t want a quieter life, necessarily, but I certainly want one with less chaos and more stability, and that has to be what every parent craves.” And of course, any remaining instability can be played out in the ‘pretend’ world of film, something Lively is expressing in her new project. It’s certainly all a long way from the quickfire chaos of teen drama Gossip Girl. “That’s true,” she nods. “With Gossip Girl there were times where we would be shooting two to three episodes at once, 27 episodes a year, 16- to 18-hour days every single day - it was just nuts, but great fun.” “It was nice living and working in New York City, and we didn’t even have the pressure of having to act well, because there wasn’t the time to! They would give us our lines at the very last second because they were still writing them it was so hard to keep up with that machine, but a great experience nevertheless.”

“I’m done wIth the sImple stuff”

The challenges nowadays are very different, and so befits someone who takes quality over quantity where her acting endeavours are concerned. “Anything I’m taking on now must be really challenging – I’m done with the simple stuff. It must inspire me because my time at home with Ryan and the children is so special and beautiful.” “There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to disrupt that life at all, even though I still love my work so much. But I do want to keep working, and I want to be good enough to combine that with being a mum and having a happy family, because raising children has always been my biggest dream.” “Children are always full of surprises, whether it’s getting crapped on or getting this big smile that you can’t stop looking at. You want that moment to last forever.” The actress pauses momentarily, before adding: “Okay, wind back, maybe you don’t want the crapping thing to last forever, but the rest, okay?” Maybe the Gossip Girl Blake Lively hasn’t quite gone away completely!

If these titles don’t inspire you to believe that there’s something out there for you to watch, learn from and enjoy, just dwell on the fact that Ken Robinson features (Ken Robinson is an international advisor on education in the arts to the government) alongside Mary Roach, who is the American author behind ‘Bonk’ (a book studying the scientific intricacies behind sex, even delving into Kinsey’s attic-based sex experiments that lead to the famed Kinsey Scale) on a long list of hosts and that it’s not all astrophysicists or MENSA genius’s. TED Teen talks are almost just as popular as the adult hosted talks and with subjects like curing Pancreatic Cancer, rescuing brides from Child Marriage, inventing Nuclear Fusion Reactors and highlighting the Musical Maestro’s of tomorrow. All of TED’s Teen

hosts are younger than twenty and are inspirational wunderkind. Martin Robbins of New Statesman panics that TED Talks are overreaching, and filling their subscribers with a false sense of intellectual know-how and ego. He even goes as far as to compare TED Talks to something he’s coined as GOD Talks. TED Talks have ‘ideas worth spreading’ and most relevantly, TED Talks inspire conversations among lots of people; creating conversations, opinions (whether allying with the original TED Talk or contradicting entirely) and more ideas. Isn’t that something to celebrate? If you are eager to learn, top-up the old brain box, and discover things you never knew existed - it must be worth a try, right? Switch out your regular binge for a TED Talk, and your brain will thank you for it!
