Repeal and Replace! e held up the printing of this edition until the vote on Obamacare was decided. Unfortunately, the forces seeking expansion of Government have won. As founder of AMAC, let me tell you this; they may have won this battle but the war has just begun! We will do everything possible to REPEAL this legislation. (See inside for a brief outline of some of the steps we’ll take) This issue of your AMAC Advantage magazine is full of information that we hope will be useful for you in the months ahead. Articles cover topics from Health Savings Accounts to Travel with some food info sandwiched in between. The real “meat” is about politics however. Most Americans are not fully aware of the deep, deep financial problem our nation is facing, a situation that the Health Care bill only makes worse. Our rising debt, our increased budget deficit and the potential downgrading of the credit rating on United States bonds all spell big trouble ahead. Inside we lay out the details and tell you about AMAC’s response. To help inform our members, AMAC has listed those Senate seats that are up for election in November. Remember, all the members of the House are up for reelection. We’ll do our best to keep you informed so when you cast your vote you know the facts. All across America, people are joining AMAC by the thousands. Help us become a powerful voice by telling your friends about us.

Amac Health Care Proposal

Marc Rubios CPAC Home Run

Wanda Seymour says:

The AMAC health plan makes much more sense than anything coming out of the Senate or House. The AMAC plan is a sensible plan in line with the wishes of the American public regarding reforms versus destruction of our health system!

Martin Leder says:

Wow, it’s refreshing to see an organization such as AMAC actually listen to its members and come up with practical solutions that make sense. You can count on my support.

Lee Knight says:

I really like the opt out addition to the plan. There is an incentive to join so I would suppose most people will buy in. This is America and each should take responsibility for their own actions.

Ryan says:

Thanks for listening to us, AMAC, about (mandatory) being unconstitutional, but the opt out can still be abused by the system. It's better than the first plan, but not there just yet. This is a complicated mess, and I think our focus should be on jobs, and spending, as this is all for naught if the economy fails and we hit hyperinflation! God Bless and keep at it!!!

D. Hersh of Ontario, CA says:

With all due respect, AMAC, compromising with ANY PART of the progressive agenda is DANGEROUS capitulation to individuals who interpret compromise as weakness, subsequently tantamount to acceptance of the possibility that there IS such a thing as “half pregnant”……This is why I am commenting here rather than wasting time with AARP!

Lt. Colonel Allen West

Rob Wolf says:

Thank you for introducing me to Lt. Colonel Allen West. He is making the statements that we patriots are thinking and wanting from our government. I want to support his efforts to keep this great Nation FREE!

6 | www.amac.us

Doug says:

A true Conservative would speak against amnesty for illegal immigrants and would announce that all illegals, including their unAmerican anchor babies, be deported to cut a massive burden on the taxpayers and national debt, and to free up millions of jobs for American workers. This was missing from Rubio’s speech and much of CPAC. To save America we need a Conservative with guts; we need Patton not patent leather.

Niel Young says:

I am extremely impressed with Marco Rubio. Principled conservatives will always get my vote. That does not include Mike Huckabee. He was a taxer and supporter of “illegal immigration.” This from a N.H. native, home of the first in the nation’s presidential primary.

Sarah Palin - They’ve Got the Wrong Girl

Dan says:

Sarah has and will continue to receive my support in any way possible. She appears to be everything you summarized in your article and most of all, principled, a STRONG point, when it comes to today’s politicians. PALIN in 2012!!!

Betty Davidson says:

If Sarah Palin registered as a Republian and says she is a conservative then why isn’t she backing JD Haysworth in Arizona? Why is she backing John McCain and Gov. Perry? Her Actions don’t match her Words. If she is going to back McCain why didn’t she register as a Democratic? Yes ,she is a RINO.

J.R. says:

Put me in the Sarah Palin camp–but not for President. I stand firmly behind her morals and convictions, but at this time I see her strengths best used as a leading force in Congress. I think that for her to be electable, she still needs to quiet the “hockey mom” image and prove her leadership abilities at the national level before stepping into the race for President. She is doing a great job for the conservative masses–just needs a little more political grooming.

es, the health care bill passed. Yes, it’s an atrocity that will expand the entitlement bracket in this country, inflict a barrage of new taxes upon hardworking families, and balloon our national debt, among many other disastrous consequences. Yes, you have a right to be angry. But chin up, folks. The 2010 elections are just around the corner. Now is your time to shine. Seventeen House members running for reelection in 2010 voted for Obamacare and represent districts carried by McCain/Palin in 2008. We must see to it that sound conservatives take their place. As a side note, Sarah Palin recently took heat from many in the mainstream media for pointing out those particular seats and writing, “Don’t Retreat, Instead — RELOAD!” She was blamed for inciting violence. Of course, it’s a bunch of garbage in light of the fact that Palin has repeatedly condemned violence. But as we know, she is subject to a different set of media-approved rules than the Washington elite. Let’s look on the bright side. It provided me with new material to support the disorder I’m submitting to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It’s called OCPD: Obsessive Compulsive Palin Disorder. Symptoms include fierce anxiety stemming from Palin’s mention of the words life, common-sense, drill, and those two particularly terror-inspiring utterances—free market and you betcha. Subjects are prone to arrogant, Olbermannic rants, a preoccupation with making unfunny jokes (see Letterman, Family Guy, and Maher for details), and an infatuation with Palin’s wardrobe, accent, and the writing on her hand. Okay, back to conservative triumph in the

Y

upcoming elections. It’s time for us to help the GOP take back the House and Senate, as well as place an authentic conservative in the White House in 2012. Remember that it’s not just about Republicans defeating Democrats. It’s also about conservatives defeating RINOs (see the Rubio/Crist race in Florida for details). With issues like cap-and-tax and immigration soon to be coming down the pike, it is imperative that full-blooded conservatives make big gains in 2010. They will see to it that the tenets of limited government and constitutional integrity stand in the way of legislation that would cripple American industry and give the government an even tighter grip over our liberty. Let’s make the Founding Fathers proud. I sometimes include references in my columns to a grandparent or other individual with wisdom beyond my years. It’s not because I’ve always had a fondness for older generations (although that’s true). It’s because they have seen this country go through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. They know what it takes to overcome impending disaster and bear the kind of courage and resiliency that I envy. So here is the latest from a ninety-something family friend: “This is America, for heaven’s sake! Now stop feeling sorry for yourself, splash some cold water on your face, and woman up! I didn’t lose half of my friends in wars to watch a bunch of snobby Washington guys and gals sign away my freedom on their lunch breaks!” She whipped me into shape pretty quickly. 2010 elections, here we come.

Health Savings Accounts H

ealth Savings Accounts (HSAs) were passed into law in 2003 and became effective January 1, 2004. They were created with the intent to give you more control over your own healthcare decisions and lower your overall cost - without compromising quality and choice.

Simply put, an HSA is a tax favored savings account designed to pay (or save for) medical and preventive expenses with tax free dollars. Plus HSAs can provide an additional tax-deferred retirement account with the option of investment opportunities. As such, it is commonly referred to as a medical IRA (without many of the restrictions and penalties). To qualify for an HSA, you must have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). HDHPs offer a more affordable approach to health insurance while maintaining the protection and security in the event of a catastrophic illness or injury. In short, you use tax free funds from your HSA to cover medical and preventive expenses until your deductible is met. Once your deductible is met, your insurance kicks in and pays according to your plan design. The concept is simple: Lower your premiums; bank the money you save into a privately owned, interest bearing HSA; pay for medical, preventive, and alternative healthcare with tax free dollars; and lower your taxable income while saving for your retirement. In essence, this strategy allows you to choose your healthcare, pay yourself, and protect your assets by paying less to the insurance companies and the IRS.

Lower Premiums by 25% to 50% or More Pay Healthcare with Tax Free Dollars Reduce Your Taxes Build an Additional Retirement Fund As a national independent H.S.A. administrator, American Health Value can work with your agent (or help you find one) to ensure that you find the HDHP in your state that offers the best plan design for you at the lowest possible cost. Repeal Obamacare! by Dan Weber

It was late Sunday night, on March 21st, when the House of Representatives voted to ignore the will of the American people. They gave the government power over our medical care. AARP is greatly responsible for this assault on our individual rights. In fact, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi singled them out and gave them credit in her speech just before the vote. AARP sold out their 36 million members. They told the Congress older Americans supported the bill. That’s a lie. The truth is: AARP never polled their members - in fact several independent polls clearly showed their members were against it. AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens, is the conservative alternative to AARP. We’re committed to growing our membership to number in the millions. That is the only way we will gain sufficient influence to counter AARP on Capitol Hill. By joining AMAC and pooling our strength, conservatives over the age of 50 will have the power to repeal this ill conceived Health Care Plan. We will reinstate the greatest health care system in the world while providing expanded benefits and improved coverage, and we’ll do it through private enterprise. Government-controlled Health Care is now the law of the land. But first it must pass some tests! As this is being written, legal steps are being taken to stop it. There will be several challenges on different aspects of the legislation, but most important will be whether the Federal Government

has the power, under the Constitution, to interfere with the rights of citizens by making them purchase a specific product (health insurance). Regardless of the legal outcome, AMAC will communicate with our members to inform them of how best to protect themselves from the negative aspects of the legislation. The manner in which the law was created leaves a great deal unknown as the regulations to carry out the law have still not been written. We will instruct our lobbyist to fight against the worst of the new regulations while at the same time we are working to repeal the law. In order to repeal the law and replace it with a common sense, free enterprise solution, we are in the process of organizing a grass roots effort to notify voters which way their representatives voted. AMAC will send questionnaires to all the candidates, compile the answers, and share it with our members prior to the November elections. We must act now to preserve our health care system before it is destroyed.

Preventing and Controlling High Blood Pressure May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month.

A

bout 73 million people in the United States have high blood pressure, which is also called hypertension. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, the first and third leading causes of death in the United States. Anyone can get it, and as you get older, the likelihood of your developing high blood pressure increases. You can maintain healthy blood pressure through changing your lifestyle or by combining lifestyle changes with prescribed medications. n Maintain a healthy weight. n Be moderately physically active on most days of the week. n Follow a healthy eating plan, foods like whole grains, potassium-rich foods, and fat-free milk products have all been linked to reducing the risk of hypertension. n Limit sodium in your diet to no more than 2,400 mg, or about 1 teaspoon’s worth each day. n Quit smoking. n If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. n If you have high blood pressure and are prescribed medication, take it as directed.

Use fresh poultry,

fish, and lean meat, rather than canned or processed types.

Use herbs, spices, and saltfree seasoning blends in cooking and at the table.

Cook rice, pasta, and hot cereal without salt.

Cut back on instant or flavored rice, pasta, and cereal mixes, which usually have added salt.

Rinse canned foods, such as tuna, to remove some sodium.

Eating for a

Healthy Heart

From Kathie's Kitchen

A heart-healthy diet is one that limits saturated fat, trans fat, salt and dietary cholesterol while adding fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is important to learn how using certain ingredients and preparation methods can result in meals that are beneficial to heart health. The following tips may help, and if you need some inspiration when it comes to preparing hearthealthy dishes, try these two delicious and “good for you” recipes. • Limit the amount of butter, margarine and shortening you use, by replacing these ingredients with olive or canola oils. • Read labels and avoid foods that state “partially hydrogenated” on the ingredient list - this indicates trans fat. • Cut fat and reduce calories when baking quick breads or muffins by substituting unsweetened applesauce for half of the oil or shortening. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of oil, use ½ cup applesauce + ½ cup of oil instead. • Choose lean meats, poultry, and beans instead of higher fat meats. The leanest options will be labeled “loin” or “round”. • Cold water fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are also a good

Chicken Piccata with Mushrooms

alternative, as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. • Ground meats should be at least 90% lean. • Reduced-fat or part-skim cheeses are tasty and good sources of calcium. Use full fat cheeses sparingly. • Replace whole milk with 1% or fat-free varieties. • Prepare recipes or egg dishes with egg whites, instead of egg yolks. Substitute two egg whites for each egg yolk. • Select colorful fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, berries and spinach, as they tend to be higher in vitamins and minerals. • Increase whole grains in your diet by replacing up to half of the all-purpose flour in recipes with whole wheat flour. Instead of adding 2 cups of all-purpose flour, for example, use 1 cup of all-purpose flour plus 1 cup of whole wheat flour. • Stir frying, roasting, grilling, poaching, broiling and steaming are all cooking methods that add little fat and are preferable to frying. • Season foods with herbs, spices, ginger, garlic, wine or lemon juice instead of salt

Our National Debt $12.5 Trillion and growing!

14 | www.amac.us

The National Debt is more dangerous to the United States than any enemy our country faces today. It has the potential to bring our economy into a massive depression. It allows foreign entities to influence the policies of our government and it has created a huge burden that must be paid for by our children and future generations.

AMAC is fighting this grave threat with the “Mother of All Petitions”, which demands we cut Federal spending by 10% in the next budget. (More about that later) How did we get into such a financial mess? Put simply, our government has spent and continues to spend more money than it is taking in. When President Bush took office the National Debt was $6.9 trillion. By the time he left it was $9.6 trillion, a 39% increase. Under the Obama administration the National debt will increase by 40% in just the first two years! We continue to increase the debt each year by adding to the annual budget deficit. This year, there will be a shortage of $1.6 trillion. The annual interest payment alone ($350 billion dollars) takes up 13% of our budget and since we are not paying off any of the principal, next year it will be even worse. How bad can it get? Just as General Motors, once the strongest and largest corporation in America went bankrupt- so can America! One of the early warning signs will be when the credit rating of our bonds is lowered. Moody’s, the rating agency who ranks the creditworthiness of borrowers using a standardized ratings scale, recently warned that the AAA rating is threatened because U.S. finances are extended and could be “overstretched”. The United Nations and China have both proposed replacing the U.S. dollar as the defacto world currency because of our weakened economy. It’s easy to understand the deep trouble

our country faces today by comparing the national debt to a typical family budget. Imagine a family who spends more than they earn and therefore must borrow money and take out loans to pay their bills. If the family spends more each year than they did the previous year, they soon will not be able to afford to pay their loans. Consequently, they must take out another loan to pay for a loan! Eventually, this family will be unable to continue borrowing, and when that happens, disaster strikes. Just as the management of General Motors failed to take corrective action to protect their corporation, our political leaders have failed in their duty as fiduciaries to protect the financial well being of our country. We can no longer tolerate their irresponsible actions. For many years we elected people running for office who promised to give us somethingif we voted for them. They promised us “free” government programs that would help the needy and make our lives better. But that is not what happened. We created a Department of Energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but 25 years later, after spending billions of dollars we’re no better off. Billions more were spent for “education” but test scores have not improved under the government programs. The public school systems in minority areas have failed to bring the children to an acceptable level of achievement, while many of the parents of these children plead to get their kids into charter schools which are based www.amac.us | 15

on the private education model. We now have a president and Congress who tells us that the government will keep paying us money as long as we are unemployed; that the government will pay our mortgages if we get behind and that our children are “entitled “to a college education. However the people have finally come to understand that these promises are not sensible or valid. The people know that we shouldn’t be borrowing and spending more money to stimulate the economy, especially at a time like this when we need to reduce debt and get our fiscal house in order. This is not the time to waste more of the taxpayers’ hard earned money on questionable projects that the Federal government has no business getting into in the first place. Now is the time to fund only the bare necessities and tighten our fiscal belts. To help bring more attention to this looming threat AMAC has begun circulating a petition demanding a 10% cut in federal spending.

“and I Quote” “I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” Thomas Jefferson

What you can do about it: Visit www.amac.us and sign the online petition Copy the petition printed in this magazine, enlarge it, bring it to a club you belong to and mail it to AMAC at 5 Orville Dr., Suite 400 • Bohemia, NY 11716 Call your Senators and Congressman & tell them now is not the time to start more government programs. It is up to us to restore fiscal responsibility.

"Some people think the Federal Reserve Banks are United States Government institutions. They are not Government institutions. They are private credit monopolies that prey upon the people of the United States for the benefit of themselves and their foreign and domestic swindlers; and rich and predatory money lenders." Representative Louis T. McFadden, chairman of the Housing Banking and Currency Committee - June 10,1932

# Hero

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler She takes the crying baby into her arms, turns her back on the hysterical mother, and walks off into the night. If she's caught, she and the baby will die. "Promise me my child will live!" the mother cries desperately after her. She turns for a moment. "I can't promise that. But I can promise that if he stays with you, he will die." The life of Irena Sendler is not only remarkable, but also an inspirational story of heroism and selfless acts of human kindness. Irena Sendler, born in 1910, was raised by her Catholic parents to respect and love people regardless of their ethnicity or social status. Her father, a physician, died from typhus that he contracted during an epidemic in 1917. He was the only doctor in his town near Warsaw who would treat the poor, mostly Jewish victims of this tragic disease. As he was dying, he told 7-year-old Irena, “If you see someone drowning you must try to rescue them, even if you cannot swim.” In 1939 the Nazis swept through Poland and imprisoned the Jews in ghettos where they were first starved to death and then systematically murdered in killing camps. Irena, by then a social worker in Warsaw, saw the Jewish people drowning and resolved to do what she could to rescue as many as possible, especially the children. Working with a network of other social workers and brave Poles, mostly women, she smuggled 2,500 children out of the Warsaw ghetto and hid them safely until the end of the war. Sendler took great risks – obtaining forged papers for the children, disguising herself as an infection control nurse, diverting German occupation funds for the support of children in hiding. She entered the Warsaw ghetto, sometimes two and three times a day, and talked Jewish parents into giving up their children. Sendler drugged the babies with sedatives and smuggled them past Nazi guards in gunny sacks, boxes and coffins. Infants were often smuggled out in the bottom of her tool box or in a burlap sack. photo courtesy of Mariusz Kubik

18 | www.amac.us

She also had a dog that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the children’s noises. She helped the older ones escape through the Irena Sendler was a sewers, through secret Polish Catholic social openings in the wall, worker who saved through the courthouse, through churches, any 2,500 Jewish children clever way she and her in German-occupied network could evade the Warsaw during World Nazis. War II. Mrs. Sendler listed the name and new identity of every rescued child on thin cigarette papers or tissue paper. She hid the list in glass jars and buried them under an apple tree in her friend's backyard. In 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death by firing squad. She withstood the torture and refused to betray any of her associates or the children in hiding. Her feet and legs were broken but no one could break her spirit. Irena spent three months in prison until her underground contacts bribed a guard to secure her freedom. After the war, she dug up the jars containing the children's identities and attempted to find the children and return them to their parents. However, almost all of their parents had been killed at the Treblinka extermination camp or had otherwise gone missing. Today's Warsaw still bears testimony to Mrs. Sendler's lifesaving work. The corner store where children were hidden in the basement and the apple tree where the names of the children where buried still stand, all within sight of the German army barracks. Irena Sendler’s selflessness and acts of human kindness endure through the many lives she heroically saved.

Tea Party M O V E M E N T

What is the Tea Party Movement? The Tea Party movement is an American taxpayer protest movement that originated in early 2009. Objecting loudly to the federal government's stimulus package, this grass roots movement organized protests and rallies and disrupted “town hall” meetings. The name "Tea Party" is a reference to the Boston Tea Party. The protests have sought to evoke images, slogans and themes from the American Revolution.

History of the Tea Party

January 27, 2009 - conservative radio talkshow host Rush Limbaugh criticized the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. His criticism gained favor among conservative politicians and media pundits who began to unify against stimulus spending.

Mary Rakovich of the conservative advocacy group “America Coast 2 Coast,” led a protest on February 10, 2009 outside President Barack Obama’s townhall meeting in Ft. Myers, Florida. Neil Cavuto gave her a national platform by inviting her to appear on his Fox News Channel program.

The first rally was held in Seattle on February 16, 2009, the day before President Obama signed the stimulus bill into law. This event was organized by blogger Keli Carender.

February 19, 2009, Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget. During Rick’s rant, he called for a “Chicago Tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could protest against out of control government spending. Ben McGrath of The New Yorker said this was the origin of the name “Tea Party” for these protests.

A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort.

20 | www.amac.us

21 | www.amac.us

February 27, 2009 - an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities across the country in the first nationwide “Tea Party” protest.

April 15, 2009 - the rising chorus of protest against government spending, high taxes, pork and unresponsive elected officials was heard Nationwide. 800+ Tax Day Tea Party protests took place in small towns and major cities where hundreds of thousands of Americans participated.

September 12, 2009 - a sea of protesters filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall to protest government tax and spending policies. The Tax Payers' March on Washington drew a crowd estimated between 450,000 to 1.2 million people

Tea Party groups and organizations continue to grow and gain momentum. continued on pg. 35

Maine

a little bit of heaven on earth by DJ Wilson If you’re looking for a little bit of heaven on earth, make Maine your summer destination. Located in the New England region of the northeast United States, Maine boasts over 5,000 miles of coastline with breathtaking views of rugged granite mountains swept downward to the sea and over 60 spectacular lighthouses.

22 | www.amac.us

The beauty of this state is apparent in its unique landscape, with more than 500,000 acres of state and natural parks fit for exploration and 32,000 miles of pristine rivers and streams. The diversity of this state allows for abundant activities, from hiking a rugged mountain to dining on lobster in a charming seaport city. There’s never been a better time to check out Maine. With a comfortable average summer temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, it is the perfect getaway for those looking to escape extreme summer heat while enjoying adventures exploring pine covered forests or relaxing by a river’s edge. Maine offers accommodations from camping to staying in the finest resorts. Activities range as well, from ocean to land, making Maine a purely fun and fascinating vacation destination. One of the most inviting places to visit in Maine is Mount Desert Island. Located off the Southern coast of Maine, it is home to the state’s sole national park. Rich in history, Acadia National Park was donated entirely by private citizens wishing to preserve its natural beauty. Surrounded by the ocean, offering stunning views from its high peaks, Acadia offers bountiful plant life and a plethora of wildlife to enjoy. With 125 miles of fascinating hiking trails and 45 miles of winding carriage roads, one can explore the unique stone bridges which cross flowing streams and breathtaking waterfalls. From mid-May to midOctober, the park offers everything from guided tours to narrated boat cruises. The Island Explorer shuttle bus is available from Mid June to early October and offers a car-free vacation option. Many visitors enjoy a drive up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point of the east coast, to take in the stunning views of the mountain landscape. Nestled on Mount Desert Island is the charming town of Bar Harbor. Well known for its history as a summer resort town of the 19th century and home to Millionaire’s row, Bar Harbor features beautiful estates from America’s most wealthy and powerful families of the time, such as the Rockefeller’s and Vanderbilt’s. This lovely seaport city features classic New England charm and offers excellent dining featuring lobster fresh from the sea, shopping in fine boutiques rich in art and sculptures, and lodging in charming bed and breakfasts or beautifully appointed resorts. Maine is well known for its fresh seafood cuisine and gourmet specialties. Maine is also nationally known for its microbreweries and many offer tours and tastings on their own premises. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Maine is a great place to go whale watching. Take a thrilling adventure

cruise to whale feeding grounds and enjoy the thrill of seeing humpback whales. Lobster cruises are also quite popular, which show how Maine lobsters are harvested. While at sea, you can expect to see abundant wild and aquatic life, such as puffins, seabirds, dolphins and seals. Those interested in adventure will enjoy puffin watching. For a peaceful adventure, try sailing aboard a Maine Windjammer during sunset hours. Proud of its culture, there are many fine museums to visit, some notably featuring the history and archeology of Maine’s Native American culture. Others feature Maine’s natural environment, agriculture, art and social history. Many visitors enjoy a trip to the lobster hatchery at the Oceanarium, where lobsters are hatched for return to the sea. Maine offers countless activities and myriads of fun for all ages, and for those seeking new learning experiences. Maine’s irregular and rocky coastline, carved by glaciers, renders Maine’s waterways dangerous for sea vessels. Lighthouses equipped with foghorns and lanterns are necessary to provide guidance to sea vessels, especially during storms or periods of extreme fog. They are an important part of Maine’s history and are fascinating to tour. These lighthouses are abundant along the coast from York to West Quoddy Head, the easternmost light house. Some are best seen by boat, while others offer ground or building visitation. Some have become sanctuaries for birds, while others offer tours and museums. The Burnt Island Lighthouse, located in Boothbay harbor, offers a living history of the life of a lighthouse keeper and his family. The lighthouses are beautiful to see, from both near and far. If you seek both adventure and peace in an exquisite environment, the northernmost New England State of Maine is your ideal vacation get-away. Whether you’re sitting on a beach watching the waves crash upon the rocky shore, have climbed a rugged mountain in anticipation of sunrise, are canoeing on a tranquil lake, are taking in views of a lighthouse on a distant shore, or you’re exploring nature deep in the pine forest, Maine offers a bit of heaven on earth and a most memorable summer destination.

Creating an Inviting Outdoor Space! By Sue Pelley, Decorating Den Interiors ith so many of today’s new homes constructed with gorgeous patio spaces, doesn’t it stand to reason that with a little thought and pre-planning these spaces can become an exciting extension of your home’s indoor space? So, where do you begin, and how do you master the design of using your outdoor space to flow naturally with your indoor space? Here are a few things to consider before creating the outdoor space of your dreams. It all starts with a plan! Begin by first noting all of the events your family will want to plan outdoors. Large gatherings and family events will call for one type of plan. Conversely, an outdoor space designed for two to relax and unwind will dictate a totally different set of priorities. Once you consider the activities you want to accommodate in your new outdoor space, you may consider creating specific spaces for specific events. For example, activities such as outdoor cooking, on a grill or a customized outdoor kitchen, might be best suited in one area, with casual dining in another. Area rugs are a great way to help separate and define spaces. Today’s area rugs are available in many shapes, sizes and colors. Secondly, creating the right landscape design to surround your outdoor space can make all the difference. Shrubbery, flowers, and architectural accents will play an important role in the overall design. Give special consideration to the plants you chose to surround your space. Which plants are you most fond of? Is your outdoor space facing North, South, East or West? Be sure to choose the right plants based on how much sun or lack thereof they need to thrive. You can create an aesthetically pleasing view that offers delicious scents throughout your outdoor space with the right plantings.

The retirement of Byron Dorgan (D) and the entrance of Governor John Hoeven (R ) into the race have made a Republican pickup almost certain.

Republicans will almost certainly take Vice President Joe Biden’s old seat, now held by Ted Kaufman (D). Republican Michael Castle (R) is a former governor, currently holds the atlarge House seat, and is a moderate in tune with the state. The strength of his candidacy has scared away Democrats’ top choice to run, Beau Biden, the Attorney General and son of the Vice President.

3

Arkansas

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D) has been in trouble for many months. Her approval numbers are dismal, as are President Obama’s numbers in Arkansas. The only potential saving grace for Lincoln had been that she had not attracted a top-tier Republican opponent, although the Republicans in the race led her in matchup polls. Now Rep. John Boozman (R) has joined the race, and a recent poll shows him up by 23 points.

4

Nevada

5

Colorado

6

Pennsylvania

7

8

Indiana

If the first three races are nearly slam dunks for Republicans, Nevada ranks slightly lower but has a very good chance for a Republican pickup. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is in significant trouble. He has very low approval numbers. By these numbers alone, Reid should lose, but some weakness among his opponents and his prolific fundraising give him a shot of winning. Republican candidates Sue Lowden and Danny Tarkanian both poll ahead of Reid, so the race favors the Republicans.

Michael Bennet (D) was appointed to this seat when Ken Salazar joined the Obama cabinet. He had never held elective office previously. He also has a primary challenge from Colorado’s Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, who could be a more formidable candidate. Republicans have Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton as their likely nominee, and she polls favorably against Bennet and Romanoff.

Arlen Specter was right to think that he had little chance of winning reelection to his Senate seat as a Republican. Pat Toomey (R) would almost certainly have beaten him in the primary. Now the irony runs deep, as Specter has a tough challenge to win a Democratic primary with Rep. Joe Sestak opposing him. And Toomey polls well against both Specter and Sestak. Add to this a strong likely GOP gubernatorial candidate in Attorney General Tom Corbett , that Toomey is unopposed in his primary and has moved a bit to the middle, and the wind blowing in the Republican direction, and the GOP has a better than even chance of winning here.

Mark Kirk (R) is a perfect candidate for Republicans to take Barack Obama’s seat, now held by Roland Burris. Kirk is a moderate from suburban Chicago, conservative on economic and defense issues and with moderate social views. He will face Alexi Giannoulias, the state treasurer, who could be a strong candidate, but who has potential baggage with an investigation of his family’s bank and with his ties to former Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich. Kirk has an even chance of winning.

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh’s decision not to seek reelection has given Republican hopefuls a decided advantage in the race for his Indiana seat. Two of the three top Republican hopefuls for the U.S. Senate in Indiana continue www.amac.us | 27

Top 13 Senate races to watch in 2010 to hold double-digit leads over Democratic Congressman Brad Ellsworth. Ellsworth supported President Obama’s health care plan in a state where opposition to the legislation is higher than it is nationally. Recent polls show Congressman John Hostettler with a 50% to 32% lead over Ellsworth and exSenator Dan Coats now posts a 49% to 34% lead over Ellsworth.

Republican Roy Blunt continues to hold a slight lead over Democrat Robin Carnahan in Missouri’s contest for the U.S. Senate. These findings and the high level of opposition to the national health care plan in the state perhaps help to explain why Carnahan wasn’t around when President Obama came to Missouri to pitch his plan. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Blunt leading Carnahan 47% to 41%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.

Two Republican hopefuls now post 10-point leads over likely Democratic nominee Paul Hodes in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state again finds former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte leading Hodes, who has no major challengers for his party’s Senate nomination. This time, she posts a 47% to 37% lead over Hodes. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and 12% are undecided.

None of the top contenders for the U.S. Senate in Ohio are gaining ground at this point, with Republican Rob Portman still holding a modest lead. The latest telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Portman leading Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher 44 percent to 39 percent. This is virtually identical to the lead Portman posted last month. Five percent (5 percent) prefer some other candidate, and 12 percent are undecided. Portman holds a 43 percent to 37 percent lead over Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, and this, too, is little changed from the previous survey.

The two strongest Republican Senate hopefuls in Kentucky have edged further ahead of their top Democrat challengers in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state. Ophthalmologist Rand Paul leads Democratic Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo 51% to 34%.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is considered to be a relatively weak candidate vulnerable to a challenge. Gillibrand was chosen by Governor Paterson to replace Clinton but the former congresswoman has failed to solidify her position. New Yorkers are waiting to see if former Republican Governor George Pataki enters the race. He leads Gillibrand in polls and would give Republicans a real shot of winning the seat. Also in the race for the GOP are New York attorney Bruce Blakeman and Former Westchester congressman Joe DioGuardi.

# Government Watch “The trouble with socialism is you run out of other people’s money to spend”

The Government Wants to Hijack Your 401K Did you know the Obama administration is considering a novel way of financing trillion-dollar budget deficits – demanding IRA and 401(k) holders buy trillions of dollars in Treasury bonds? The administration is scrambling to find ways to sell government debt without having to raise interest rates. Bloomberg reported that the U.S. Treasury Department and the By Fido Department of Labor your are planning to stage a government public-comment period watchdog before implementing regulations that would require private investors to structure IRA and 401(k) accounts into what could amount to a U.S. Treasury debtbacked government annuity. But the agencies are getting serious pushback from the mutual fund industry, objecting to what some financial planners see as a government attempt to divert hundreds of billions of dollars of private retirement accounts into federal government debt. Americans are also smarter than the administration seems to believe. A survey by the Investment Company Institute found that more than 70% of all households responding disagreed with the idea of requiring a retiree to buy an annuity with a portion of their assets. Let's hope the rhetoric the administration is getting ready to deploy doesn't fool the average investor. If the government succeeds, your IRA might end up in the same mess as Medicare and Social Security.

AMAC Attends CPAC 2010 AMAC attended the Conservative Political Action Conference, where thousands of conservative activists and leaders from across the country joined together for the three-day event. CPAC has become the most powerful national annual convention for conservatives and this year’s conference was different than those of years past. More than ever, right-leaning Americans are looking toward conservatives for answers, and for the first time, the message from CPAC speakers was one of confidence and reassurance. Glenn Beck's speech was a call for Republicans to admit the error of their ways and return to their conservative roots. Other speakers focused on the core aspects of the conservative movement: small government, free enterprise and a strong national defense. The biggest speakers at CPAC provided a hint as to who will be the hottest conservative leaders over the next couple of years. They were Marco Rubio, Mike Pence, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich. The conference was a tremendous success, bringing various factions on the right together due to a common aversion towards the current federal government bailouts, spending, and takeover of healthcare.

Health Care Update

We’re Listening...

Q

Should Congress pass President Obama’s new health care plan? No (99%, 7,066 Votes)

AMAC Updates Health Care Proposal Based on Member Feedback AMAC has revised its health care proposal based on the feedback and suggestions of its members. We’re listening, and we hear you loud and clear! Because of the overwhelming response to the release of AMAC’s Health Care proposal and the many suggestions received, AMAC has removed the requirements that coverage would be mandated. In the original proposal, coverage would have been required for individuals who have no coverage and for employees eligible for group coverage but who were not in the plan. Under the revised proposal, both individuals and employees may elect to opt out of the offered coverage. According to Dan Weber, president of AMAC, ”The reason the coverage would have been mandated was to assure preexisting illnesses would not be excluded.” He said, “It won’t work if people choose not to pay a premium and when they get sick, buy insurance-and then go to the hospital and expect insurance to cover their bill. That would be unfair to those who were paying into the plan all along.” The new proposal would allow a person to sign off agreeing that they are not going to be covered for injuries or illness that occurred prior to the purchase of the policy. A waiting period would be put in place before illness is covered; the rates paid by someone who opted out of joining the plan when eligible would be increased for a period of 10 years after they join the plan. Weber said, “The final details would have to be worked out with the actuaries but we feel over 95% of those eligible would want to participate. If that happens, we have got a plan that is feasible.” AMAC also announced that insurance coverage would be allowed to be purchased across state lines, pending the agreement of the various states. Tort reform would be expanded under the new proposal with attorney’s fees being capped at 15% of any settlement payments.

It is also a place to find information that will assist you in navigating the rough waters we face in the days, weeks and months ahead. This is a non-political movement. The 9-12 Project is designed to bring us all back to the place we were on September 12, 2001. The day after America was attacked we were not obsessed with Red States, Blue States or political parties. We were united as Americans, standing together to protect the greatest nation ever created. www.the912project.com

Tea Party Express The Tea Party Express is a national bus tour which hosts a series of tea party rallies all across the nation. At each stop the tour highlights some of the worst offenders in Congress who have voted for higher spending, higher taxes, and government intervention in the lives of American families and businesses. They cross the country unifying, educating, and most importantly encouraging Americans to continue their opposition of deficit spending, government-run health care, and irresponsible bailouts. The caravan of vehicles features two 45-foot buses along with several RVs and a contingent of SUVs and support vehicles. The 9-12 Project ~ The Nine Principles 1. America is good. 2. I believe in God and He is the center of my life. 3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday. 4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government. 5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it. 6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results. 7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable. 8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion. 9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.

The 9-12 Project ~ The 12 Values • Honesty • Reverence • Hope • Thrift • Humility • Charity • Sincerity • Moderation • Hard Work • Courage • Personal Responsibility • Gratitude

Parting Thought #

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself. Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do. Pope John XXIII
