Publisher’s Letter

Facing Adversity As we go to print I can’t help but feel a tremendous dark cloud is beginning to cover America. It is spreading to us from the Middle East, where American citizens have been beheaded and thousands of innocent people are being murdered. In that cloud are the seeds of a destructive force that threaten the future of our children, our grandchildren and our very country. Many believe that our nation has been blessed by the Creator, as it can’t be denied that America has had more prosperity, more freedom and more people living happily than anywhere else in the history of the planet. We proudly proclaim that we trust in God, and those in control of our ever growing government end their speeches by saying, “May God Bless America!” But, could God forsake us? If a nation allows 50 million unborn children to be killed, could God remove His protection from that nation? If we abandon our traditional values of Faith, family and individual morality, could God abandon us?

by Dan Weber President, Association of Mature American Citizens

The only way to survive the storm that awaits us is to reverse the direction we are heading. And it will take much bravery on the part of us citizens to do that. When you look up the meaning of “bravery,” it says it means “courage.” When you look up the meaning of “courage,” it says, “The quality that allows one to face danger or adversity with confidence.” But I say we will need a special courage that will allow us to face danger and adversity even when we don’t have confidence, even when it looks hopeless. We need the bravery and courage that George Washington had during Valley Forge! That is what AMAC is all about and why we went up against a Goliath called AARP. What should you be doing? First- vote. Second - speak out. Don’t be afraid to speak up when you see something happening that you know is wrong. Third - get involved. Become an AMAC Delegate or join a political movement. This fall the balance of the Senate could change. The Senate approves the judges on the Supreme Court who have made decisions that go against our traditional values. So please do your research and vote according to your beliefs. May we be deserving of God’s Blessing,

Speaking Your Mind

Sound Off

“sound off” at www.amac.us

Americans are speaking out on AMAC’s website. Please visit www.amac.us to give us your views and to read what others are saying! America is in a Diplomatic Slump

Jack says: I disagree with Mr. Weber that Obama and Kerry are well-intentioned. In my opinion, it has been Obama’s intention from the very start to destroy our nation. There is no better way than to betray our Israeli friends (as well as the few other friends we had in the world!), destroying our national security by reducing our armed forces and opening our borders to anyone (including terrorists) who may want to enter our country, bankrupting our nation, violating the Constitution, and assuming unconstitutional dictatorial powers, while ignoring congress, the courts, the Constitution, and the will of thinking American people. It may already be too late to salvage our beloved nation, much less the rest of the world.

AMAC Town Hall with Congressman Franks

Ken Dally says: It was a pleasure to speak with AMAC Delegate Coordinator, Amy Gerak, at the Trent Franks AMAC meeting. I want to compliment her and all AMAC personnel who put this presentation together. It was very informative and the most positive discussion I have experienced from our political officials in recent times. Congressman Franks responded to all answerable questions extremely well and revealed his personal experiences, frustrations, and desires. Most Washington types find this near impossible to offer or they don’t want to tell the truth.

Big Savings

John Doyle I have been a member of AMAC for about a year. A week ago I received in the mail a little wallet stuffer card designed to defray my prescription bills. I vacillated between throwing it away and putting it into my wallet to join the many items that make my wallet too fat. I thought what could that little card from a fledgling organization do for me? But into the wallet it went just in case it could save me a couple of bucks. Two days later I went for my yearly dermatological exam and the doctor recommended I buy a specific steroid to help combat red spots on my skin. I went to the pharmacy and to my surprise that 5 oz. tube was $263.00. The pharmacist and I were stunned. He asked

6 | www.amac.us

if I had any insurance and I said no. Then I remembered I had the AMAC RX discount card and handed it to him. He punched it into the computer and said, “I do have a new price for you. How does $20 sound”? Yes, that was the price. A savings of $243.00. So, thank you AMAC. Your prescription card has become a permanent member of my wallet team.

Social Security Trust Will Survive

Martin C says… Your guarantee to provide for “older” Americans on small incomes is nebulous to say the least and somewhat disturbing. Who is going to decide what a “small income” is? Does this mean your plan would take from those that paid in, in some cases close to the maximum, all their working life? Until I hear something to the contrary I have to believe I’m just reading about another misguided redistribution of wealth plan.

CS says… The ‘trust fund’ is simply the statutory authority for the SSA to claim a share of current tax revenues as needed. In reality it protects Congress and whoever is the President at the time from raising the social security tax on current workers wages in order to pay current retirees. As that mechanism runs out, the political battle between parents (beneficiaries) and their children (working tax payers) will intensify. The AMAC proposal offers the only way out.

AMAC Advantage Magazine

Barbara F. says I recently had the opportunity to read the article by Dan Weber on “Conservatism is Colorblind”. This article is right on spot as far as the history of conservatism, today’s social liberalism, and the political philosophy of being a Republican. I thank the writer for this well written article.

African American Elected Federal Officials

Miles Fowler says: I want to respond to “Did You Know?” in vol. 8, issue 2. You mention the very first class of African American elected federal officials after the Civil War, but there were others you left out, most notably Sen. Blanche Kelso Bruce who held the other Mississippi senatorial seat (you mentioned Hiram Revels who held the first) from 1875 to 1881. In 1880, Sen. Bruce

became the first African American to be nominated for vice-president. Bruce is the only U.S. senator to have been born a slave. (Revels was born free.) From 1881, when Sen. Bruce left office, until 1967, when Edward Brooke (R-MA) took office, there were no African Americans in the US Senate. Of the ten African Americans who have been elected to the Senate, half have been Republicans, although one Republican, P.B.S. Pinchback of Louisiana was elected but was not allowed to be seated in 1875 and never served. Other African Americans who served in the House of Representatives before 1889 include Richard Cain (R-SC); John Lynch (R-MS); Robert Smalls (R-SC) and six others. The last African American elected to Congress in the nineteenth century was George White (R-NC), and there followed a long dry spell until 1928 with the election of Oscar DePriest (R-IL). DePriest, like all previous African American congressmen, was a Republican. In 1935, DePriest was succeeded by an African American Democrat, Arthur Mitchell.

Disagrees with Religion in Government

Sam Whitehead says: I have not been happy as a member of AARP because of its liberal economic leanings. I recently joined AMAC hoping to align with a more conservative viewpoint to match my own. I was pleased to receive my first edition of Amac Advantage (Winter 2014). After all, my childhood hero Fran Tarkenton, was on the cover. I cringed, however, when I read Robert Baker’s “Sound Off” comment that implied God should be included in the process of government. I read further and found (p.39) that there is an AMAC Delegate in Maryland who is fighting to keep prayer in schools. I believe strongly in the U. S. Constitution’s guarantee of the separation of church and state; and that both are better off that way. I first learned that as the opinion of the Pastor in the Pentecostal church I grew up in. Both institutions are corrupted when that line is crossed.

Your Medicare Advisor

Dont Miss the Chance to Enhance Your Benefits for 2015 The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period is here: October 15th - December 7th

W

e are now in the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period and it is the one time per year that seniors are allowed to add, change or drop their current Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan without having a qualifying event. By this time, you have received a bunch of mailers, have seen TV commercials, heard radio ads, may have even seen a presentation or two, and are likely completely overwhelmed. AMAC is here to help you with this important decision that will determine your medical and/or drug coverage for the next year. Our agents will review your individual needs, review your prescriptions with you if you like, and help determine which plan will be a good option for you. Our goal is to keep your costs as low as possible while ensuring you get the coverage you need and are looking for. During the Annual Enrollment Period, a beneficiary is allowed to add, drop or change their Medicare Advantage Plan and/or their Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans are guaranteed for one year at a time. It is essential for beneficiaries to review their current coverage because carriers can offer different plans in the following year, or discontinue plans altogether. If your plan is continuing, premium increases may occur. The Annual Enrollment Period is the time for beneficiaries to take advantage of the choices available to enhance their coverage. Some key factors to consider when reviewing Medicare Advantage Plans are: ■ What type of plan are you looking for? Are you looking for a plan with lower co-pays and premiums that has a specific doctor network? (HMO) Or

by Diana Wisniewski

does having doctor choice better suit your needs where you may have higher co-pays, premiums or pay more to go out of network? (PPO) ■ Are your doctors in network? It is very important to know if your doctors are in the plan’s network. If they are not, you may have no coverage or pay more for these doctor visits. ■ What hospitals are in network? While you are able to go to any emergency room in the event of a medical emergency, inpatient and outpatient services are subject to the Medicare Advantage Plan’s network. ■ Know your co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, and maximum out of pocket expense. For Medicare Advantage Plans with Prescription Drugs, and stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, you should also consider: ■ Is your pharmacy a network pharmacy? If not, you will likely pay more for your prescriptions. ■ Are your prescriptions on the plan’s formulary? Know what your prescription drugs will cost. AMAC’s trusted licensed insurance

agents strive to provide our members with the most suitable option we have available by reviewing these key factors with each member. Our agents try to make this overwhelming time period as easy as possible for our members. Stay ahead of the rush this year and call AMAC as early as October 1st to get the 2015 plan information. Please keep in mind that 2015 plan information will not be available to us prior to October 1st. The Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15th and runs through December 7th. AMAC encourages you to start the process early this year. With approximately 10,000 seniors aging into Medicare each day, the Annual Enrollment Period will be busier than ever before. Our agents await your call and look forward to providing you with the highest level of service. ★

Simply Jedediah

Politicians, Are You Paying Attention? I recently found myself at an upstate New York dinner table with a bunch of independent voters - a mom, a dad, an aunt, a grandpa, two college students, and two twenty-something cousins. The topic of conversation turned to politics and I quickly learned that they were all disgusted with both parties.

T

hey were dissatisfied with President Obama’s leadership, frustrated by congressional inaction, unsure of what the Republican Party stood for these days, and doubtful that anyone in the D.C. political machine was actually listening to them. When asked if they planned on voting in the midterm elections, most of them reluctantly said yes, but weren’t sure their votes would make a difference. “No matter who gets elected, will anything really change? Doubt it.” That was the sentiment of the night. Regardless, I wanted to get a feel for what issues those regular, hard-working, middle-income people care about as they gear up to head to the voting booths. 1. ECONOMY. Hands down, everyone cited jobs as their number one. Lowering taxes and keeping more of their hardearned cash were close behind. 2. HEALTH CARE costs. While pretty pessimistic about Obamacare, everyone was also pretty irritated by the

by Jedediah Bila 10 | www.amac.us

GOP’s lack of a concrete alternative. An overall dissatisfaction with the health care system was clear. 3. EDUCATION. Student loan debt reform, expanding educational options, and improving the public school system were key priorities. Common Core was not popular. 4. IMMIGRATION. Border security concerns, national security concerns, and questions about what to do with the illegal immigrants already here came up quite a bit. The saddest part of the conversation was that the younger people felt the least engaged, the least confident that their votes had any power or that any politician would bring about positive change to the system. I wasn’t surprised to discover a pretty intense distaste for politicians and distrust of the system at large. That got me thinking. I remembered 2008 in New York City. I don’t know how Obama did it, but he inspired a lot of people. They believed him. They believed in him. They suddenly felt optimism about reforming the political system. Students were paying attention. Many young people were excited about a new leader and new ideas. Yes, I disagreed with most of Obama’s policies, but his ability to inspire that year was something to be studied. Reagan had a similar skill. It is a skill too rarely seen in the political sphere. I began to wonder what would happen if charismatic leaders with the ability to

inspire were to champion a concrete vision for the issues prioritized by the family I highlighted above. What if those leaders could really talk economic growth, sound policies to create jobs and lower taxes, school choice, border security measures, and a pro-free market health care alternative? Imagine the possibilities. Regardless, I can’t deny the palpable dissatisfaction with politics and politicians that people express to me daily from all parts of the country. Politicians who intend to get elected and make a difference this midterm season and beyond, pay attention to the voices like the ones I spoke with above. Pay attention to the issues they care about and the leadership they seek. If you don’t aim to inspire, step aside and make room for those who do. And if you do, get to work. What are you waiting for? ★

Did You Know? Convention of States The Founders’ Solution to Washington’s Problems Michael Farris Washington, D.C., is broken. We have a $17 trillion national debt that is growing exponentially, legions of laws made by unelected bureaucrats, and enemies who are flourishing under our inconsistent, weak-kneed foreign policy. If we continue on our pres-

ent course, “We the People” are in danger of becoming a quaint relic of a bygone era. It is time for more than just a change of personnel in Washington, D.C. Thankfully, the American Founders were aware that just such a day might arise, when the federal government would accumulate far too much power at the expense of the people. In the Constitution they provided us with a tool to reclaim our heritage of freedom: a Convention of States. The states, through a convention, can propose amendments to the Constitution that will bring an end to the federal government’s growing tyranny. Through a convention we can force Congress to balance the budget, overturn erroneous Supreme Court decisions, disassemble the gigantic federal bureaucracy, put term limits on federal officials, and much more. Recently, some have raised fears that such a convention could “run away” and destroy our precious freedoms, but our Founders were wiser men than that. As with everything else, they put numerous checks and balances in place to ensure a Convention of States could never run away. The foremost among these is ratification: a Convention of States only has authority to propose amendments. Before they ever become part of the Constitution, any proposed amendments must be ratified by 38 states, ensuring that no rogue propositions could ever make it into the Constitution.

12 | www.amac.us

It’s high time we start using all the power we have in the Constitution to stop the growing tyranny of our federal government, so we can pass on the same legacy of freedom that we ourselves received in this great nation. Visit conventionofstates.com for more information.

The National Debt – A National Disgrace Gerry Hafer Back in 2008, while campaigning for the presidency, Barack Obama launched a scathing indictment of the Bush Administration’s handling of the national debt, calling it “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic.” This was a continuation of a theme that began two years earlier, when then-Sen. Obama, D-Ill., cited raising the national debt as “a sign of leadership failure.” Let’s look at some facts. When Barack Obama took office in January of 2009, our national debt stood at $10.6 trillion, a level that was $4.9 trillion higher than at the beginning of the Bush Administration’s term in office. Making this a front-and-center campaign issue in 2008, candidate Obama called the Bush Administration “the most fiscally irresponsible administration that we have seen,” disparaging the increase in the national debt during George W. Bush’s two terms as being the product of a lack of honest accounting in the federal budget.1 With so much of his presidential campaigns based on solving the national debt problem, it would seem reasonable to expect that the $10.6 trillion debt level when President Obama took office would be lower at this point, or at least growing at a rate well within the congressionally-approved ceiling. But that’s not the case. In the five and a half years since President Bush left office, the national debt has ballooned to $17.6 trillion. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office reports that “Between 2009 and 2012, the federal government recorded the largest budget deficits relative to the size of the economy since 1946, causing its debt to soar.”2 And under the budget proposals recently put forth by the Obama Administration, the national debt would reach $25 trillion in 2015, according to analyses by The Heritage Foundation. Is this irresponsible? You bet it is! Just like the personal financing situation faced by ordinary Americans, a large debt level requires more and more disposable

income to service it, meaning less and less to spend elsewhere. With the net annual interest owed on the national debt standing currently at well over $200 billion, and with each individual citizen’s portion of the outstanding debt standing at over $55,000, it’s pretty clear that there are problems ahead. These problems are likely to take the form of lower economic growth for the country, the potential for runaway inflation, and a considerably weakened dollar - problems that will be compounded for future generations unless corrective action is undertaken. www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/ attachments/45471-Long-TermBudgetOutlook_7-29.pdf www.heritage.org/federalbudget/nationaldebt-under-president-obama-budget

Stressed? Pick up a book! It seems like just about everybody’s stressed these days. Financial stresses, relationship stresses, world event stresses…you name it, but some level of stress is likely to be found in everyone around you at any given point in the day. A steady stream of studies has focused on the origins of stress, and they are indeed plentiful. The online news service Newser (www.newser.com), for example, recently recapped a study conducted by The Daily Beast that highlights Detroit as containing the most highly-stressed residents, suggests that firefighting is the most highly stressed occupation, and claims that women are 8% more stressed than men. All of that is good to know, perhaps, but so what? What can you do about it? Well, just as there’s no shortage of studies that tell you who’s stressed, there’s a surplus of recommendations of what to do about it - get a massage, meditate, take a walk by a babbling brook. All good, but lately, we’ve seen a fair amount of popular press on a relatively simple approach to managing stress — reading a book! A study by Mindlab International for the

University of Sussex found “that reading a newspaper or book works better and faster than listening to music, going for a walk or sitting down with a cup of tea to calm frazzled nerves.” Cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis put it this way, “Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation.” So the next time you’re starting to feel overwhelmed, pick up a book and immerse yourself in the words…even if only for a few minutes. Studies have shown that a mere six minutes of reading can reduce your stress level by up to 68%!

The Kitchen Nightmare Remember when “you could eat off the kitchen floor” was a testament to a germfree environment in the home? Not so fast! While the floor itself may be clean, you may be surprised to know that the rest of the kitchen may not follow suit. NSF International (NSF.org) recently dispatched its researchers on a study to check the germ content of common surfaces in the home. Their testing had them swabbing surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms, and a host of common areas and objects, with a mission of finding where substances like coliform bacteria (a cause of food poisoning) and staph germs (a MRSA indicator) might be lurking around the household. The results of this study were frightening. Roughly a third of kitchen countertops were found to contain coliform bacteria, as did 45% of kitchen sinks! But the most startling find of all was the seemingly harmless dish sponge; more than three quarters of these were found to harbor food poisoning bacteria. In one outwardly normal kitchen, this everyday item was found to be host to 180 million times the number of germs found on a new sponge. And the surprises aren’t limited to the kitchen. In the bathrooms tested, NSF researchers found that toothbrush holders far outstripped toilet seats as a haven for germs, with coliform bacteria again being the main offender. Easily transferrable to toothbrush bristles, you’re setting yourself up for cross-contamination without really realizing it. So what do you do about it? The NSF study suggests microwaving your sponge frequently (two minutes should do it), replacing the sponge more frequently, using a dish rag that you can simply throw into the washing machine, or frequently running your toothbrush holder through a dishwashing cycle. But a more general suggestion is to

re-examine your overall cleaning regimen so that you’re not overlooking the “nooks and crannies” that often are glossed over during the routine maintenance process. That’s where the bad stuff tends to congregate.

The Future of Gas Mileage – Is 250+ mpg on the Horizon? Worried about gas mileage? Most of us are, and with good reason. Even though pump prices have somewhat stabilized in recent years, a trip to the local filling station still gives us a bit of a chill as we watch the meter’s upward spiral. There’s no escaping the fact that the cost of gasoline represents a substantial portion of our daily commuting costs, our vacation costs, and the cost of transporting the kids to their extensive social destinations. The fuel efficiency of cars we purchase has become a major part of what we look for when we’re car-shopping. Automakers know this, and for years have been striving to build more fuel efficiency into their production processes. And the EPA is pushing them hard, requiring that new cars and light trucks reach an average of 35.5 mpg within the next two years. With respect to saving gas, this is all good, but in the minds of many automotive experts, it’s not enough. That’s why automotive experts have been pursuing a design that would allow for a more substantial increase in fuel efficiency. A prime example of this relentless pursuit is Volkswagen’s goal of producing a hybrid vehicle with the ability to produce well beyond 100 mpg. Popular Science magazine’s January 2014 issue commented on VW’s XL1, calling it “The Most Efficient Car Ever” and reporting test results that produced a whopping 261 mpg. The XL1 is of course a prototype vehicle, with a substantial portion of its structure fabricated out of carbon fiber rather than steel. The body is aerodynamically sculpted and sits a mere two inches above the road surface, and it’s powered with a 20kW electric motor that can reach a top speed of 99 mph. Don’t look for the XL1 at your local dealer too soon, though. VW is only planning at present to produce a limited run of 250 units, and only for sale in Europe. Some version of the technology may find its way to Americans in the future, but the XL1’s roughly $150,000 price tag might be too much of a sticker shock.

ISIS – A Growing Threat In Your Neighborhood ? Back in 2009 the United States released Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from an Iraqi prison after serving four years in captivity. His parting words to American troops were “I’ll see you in New York”. Benign words from a disgruntled former prisoner? Think again, fast forward to September 2014. Baghdadi now leads the ISIS (The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) in what has become a terrorist army with over 10,000 jihadists.

Part of the strategy of the ISIS is the recruitment of foreign fighters. The jihadists claim to be from countries that include Britain, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia and yes, the United States. Described as the wealthiest terrorist organization in the world, ISIS reportedly has up 31,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq. The threat has now increased, not only in numbers but also of “radicalized and battle-hardened Westerners” returning from Syria and Iraq to carry out attacks on their home soil. While the exact number of foreign fighters associated with ISIS is unknown, an NBC report cited estimates at above 10,000. That includes “dozens of Americans” according to Attorney General Eric Holder who referred to ISIS as “a global crisis in need of a global solution” and stressed that the world “cannot simply sit back and let it become a training ground from which our nationals can return and launch attacks on our home soil.” ★

Giving Your Home to Your Children? Consider these things first!

M

any parents who give their homes to their adult children intend to help their child achieve the dream of homeownership. While this may seem like a good idea at first, all potential outcomes should be carefully considered due to situations that could occur that are beyond your control. If you plan to give your home to your adult child, but would also like to remain living in the home, beware of the risks. For example, your child’s inability to make payments, a divorce, bankruptcy, or a creditor’s lien against the property could affect your living arrangements. A friend of mine once gave his home to his son, with the agreement that he (the father) would remain living in the house. His son, without his father's permission, decided to sell the home, leaving his father without a place to live. Never in a lifetime did my friend think that he would be evicted by his own son. Other parents may give their home to their child in order to qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is intended to be "the payer of last resort" when it comes to long-term care. However, Medicaid pays for longterm care only for those who are poor or who have become poor after paying for medical expenses or nursing homes. If you give away your home within five years of applying for Medicaid coverage for long-term care, Medicaid presumes that the gift was made to qualify for Medicaid. This triggers a period of ineligibility for Medicaid long-term care benefits on the theory that those assets could have been used to pay for the individual's care.

by Laura Bishop 14 | www.amac.us

The five-year rule doesn't come into play if your home is transferred to one of the following individuals: ■

the spouse of the applicant;

■ a child of the applicant who is under age 21; ■ a child of the applicant who is blind or permanently and totally disabled; ■ a sibling who already has an equity interest in the home and who has been residing in the home for a period of at least one year immediately before the date you move to a nursing home; ■ your child who has been residing in the home for at least two years prior to you moving to a nursing home and who, as determined by the state, provided the applicant with care, which permitted you to reside at home rather than in an institution or facility. A home transfer is not advisable as a wealth-preservation or tax-avoidance strategy if the value of the parents' estate is within the limit allowed for exclusion by the IRS or state tax authorities. Parents who are considering giving their home to their kids as "a gift" should consider the federal and state gift tax. In a case where federal gift tax applies, the rate can be as high as 40%. There can also be state gift taxes. Gifting a home also removes the option of a reverse mortgage. A reverse mortgage is a type of loan where a homeowner , 62 years or older, borrows against a home's equity and continues to live in the house with the understanding that the loan (and accumulated interest) will be paid off in a lump sum when the house is sold, or the borrowers move out or die. The tax bite is likely to be far less if the home changes hands as part of a normal inheritance.

Instead of gifting their home, parents looking to downsize can sell their home and share the proceeds with the children. If you have a gain from the sale of your primary home, you may qualify to exclude up to $250,000 of that gain from your income, or you may qualify to exclude up to $500,000 of that gain if you file a joint return with your spouse.

Things to Consider: If you would like to transfer ownership while continuing to live in the house, additional legal steps are recommended. For example, if you are looking to reduce your estate to a level where no estate tax is owed, you may want to consider a "life estate," a "qualified-personal-residence trust," or consider gifting or selling your home to a "defective grantor trust." Be cautious before transferring your home to your children. Keep in mind that if you do give your home to your children, it belongs to them. Your children may be well-intentioned; however, they could face an unfortunate circumstance such as bankruptcy, divorce, or a lawsuit, necessitating the sale of the home in which you are living. Where would you go? Do not give away your home unless you are ready for these risks.

The Fix on Flats: How to handle a tire blowout

W

hile the number of tirerelated crashes has dropped dramatically since 2008, when all new vehicles were required to have automatic tire pressure monitoring systems, these numbers remain high. Tire blowouts and flats result in nearly 11,000 collisions and 200 fatalities each year.1

Why? Blowouts may be rare, but that may actually make them more dangerous when they do occur, because drivers are less prepared to handle this potentially serious situation. When a tire blows out, it can take about ¼ second before your easy ride suddenly becomes a struggle to avoid an auto accident. How you react can make all the difference. Staying calm and in control of your vehicle is your best defense.

What a tire blowout sounds like BANG! Whoosh! Flap… flap… flap. A loud boom reverberating through your car may be the first indication your tire has blown out. Or you may notice the sound of air quickly releasing, then the flop of the deflated tire hitting the road.

What a tire blowout feels like When a tire explodes at speed, you will feel the vehicle slow down, then pull strongly to the left or right depending on which tire burst.2 With a front tire, you will feel the force mostly within the steering of your vehicle. With a rear tire, you will feel it more in the seat or body. Front or back, your response should be the same.

Driving through a tire blowout According to the National Safety Council and other safety experts, there are some important tips to remember if you experience a tire blowout: ■

Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel

Don’t slam on the brakes

Let your car slow down gradually

Pull to the side of the road once you have slowed to a safe speed

Activate your emergency flashers3

After a tire blowout Only exit your vehicle if you are certain you are safely off the road and out of harm’s way. Turn your emergency flashers on to alert other drivers, and put out reflective cones or triangles if you have them. If it is not safe to change the tire where you are, or you are unsure how, call for roadside assistance. Remember: a spare is only recommended for emergencies and should not be driven for long distances or at high speeds. Only use a spare to help you get somewhere you can get your tire replaced. Take the time to read your owner’s manual to learn where your spare tire and necessary tools are located. Your manual may also provide instructions on how to change a flat tire. It’s a good idea to be familiar with these procedures before you get stuck on the side of the road.

Preventing a tire blowout The good news is that many tire blowouts are preventable. Most occur from May through October when the road surface is the hottest, resulting from an underinflated tire, excessively worn treads, or an overloaded vehicle. A simple, routine inspection of your tires to check for slow leaks, wear and tear, and proper pressure is important. Keeping your load light, within your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations (found in

Did you know? ■ Some tire pressure monitoring systems may only issue a warning once your tire pressure is well below that recommended by the manufacturer for optimal driving. ■ Extreme heat and high speed increase the likelihood of a tire blowout, particularly if tires are underinflated.5 ■ Gas mileage may improve by up to 3.3% when tires are properly inflated. ■ Did you also know that Travelers offers AMAC members access to special savings on auto, home and renters insurance? Congressional Meetings Empower AMAC Members Power to the People! This cultural expression and political slogan was very popular during the 1960s when young people used it to state their dissatisfaction with older people, a.k.a. “the establishment.”

I

n 1971, John Lennon released the single “Power to the People” and the song became somewhat of an anthem for the significant issues of the day throughout that decade. The slogan rings true today and serves to remind us that true power rests with the people of a representative republic like the United States of America. AMAC Delegates, who comprise our grassroots program, have been connecting members with their Congressmen in their respective communities since the fall of 2013. By the time the mid-term elections take place in November, over 30 members of Congress would have met with their AMAC member constituents at exclusive meetings throughout the country. The feedback from AMAC members has been outstanding. They enjoy the one-onone contact with their representative and appreciate the opportunity to hold them accountable for their actions in Washington. More importantly, AMAC members feel empowered when encountering their Congressmen in a local setting. They learn more about the legislative process and they also have the chance to question their representative directly on the issues that are important to them. While these events are proving to be popular with AMAC members, as they’ve

averaged 40 people per meeting, members of Congress have also taken notice. They have repeatedly been impressed with AMAC members’ command of the issues and compliment the membership for the courteous and respectful decorum in which the meetings take place. We look forward to placing more AMAC members in touch with their representatives as we constantly expand our grassroots efforts. In the meantime, please enjoy some of the stories of AMAC members’ experiences when they personally connect with Congress.

Diane Black Nearly 25 AMAC members and guests filled the City Council chamber in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, for a meeting with Congressman Diane Black (TN-06) on August 18. Rep. Black welcomed her AMAC constituents and provided an update on hotbutton issues including the out of control spending by the Obama Administration.

United States. She feels that the border crisis represents a national security issue and, citing her experience as an emergency room nurse, a health issue given the lack of immunizations for the majority of people who are entering the country at the southern border. Congressman Black is also concerned about the safety of younger people entering the country as a result of drug cartel recruitment and human trafficking. Rep. Black fielded questions on topics ranging from the economy, ObamaCare and Social Security. Regarding the economy, Rep. Black was quick to point out that although the national unemployment number may have recently ticked down slightly, a more accurate indicator of the employment status in the United States is the work force participation rate, which according the Congressman, is the lowest since the Carter Administration. Congressman Black also spent time after the meeting speaking with AMAC members personally. AMAC Delegate Wade Burt organized the meeting and AMAC Delegate Reid Pranka was also in attendance. Congressman Black expressed

Tom Price Fifty-two AMAC members gathered at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta, Georgia, for an AMAC member meeting with Congressman Tom Price (GA-06). Speaking from his medical experience as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Price spoke with expertise and credibility regarding ObamaCare and his ideas for quality health care reform based on free market principles and ideas. In addition to health care, Dr. Price answered questions about ending the export-import bank and crony capitalism, the financial status of Social Security Disability Insurance, immigration and the need for a Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate. Dr. Price also painted a contrasting picture of the conservative vision for the country – with an emphasis on individual freedom – ver-

Over 30 AMAC members and guests in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District spent quality time with their representative, Congressman Mike Kelly. AMAC Delegate Tom McFate made the arrangements for this meeting, the second one Representative Kelly has held for AMAC members this year. The questions were free flowing and members’ concerns centered on law enforcement issues, term limits for Members of Congress, ObamaCare’s effect on Medicare and the treatment of America’s military veterans. Congressman Kelly spoke on the importance of getting together with peers, family and friends to discuss the issues facing America. Stressing that communication and dialogue are keys to advancing conservative principles, he encouraged AMAC members to pick one or two issues, researching them well in order to hold intelligent conversations with folks who hold the opposite opinion. The purpose, according to Rep. Kelly, is to win hearts and minds, and that process starts in neighborhoods, on front porches and across kitchen tables. Congressman Kelly spent a good amount of time speaking with AMAC members individually when the meeting’s question and answer session had ended. AMAC Delegate Tom McFate is already planning the next event for AMAC members in PA-03 and ultimately would like to see events like these take place on a quarterly basis.

Mike Kelly (l) (PA-03), with AMAC Delegate Tom McFate (r)

Congressman Dan Benishek (MI-01)

Twenty AMAC members gathered at the Grand Traverse District Library in Traverse City, Michigan, to meet with MI-01 Congressman Dan Benishek. The intimate, small group setting allowed for a very cordial dialogue to take place regarding the key issues facing American seniors today. Many of the questions from AMAC members centered on the Congressman’s area of expertise, health care. A former general surgeon and a current member of the GOP Doctors Caucus, Dr. Benishek gave a thorough overview of the future of ObamaCare and his ideas for health care reform. The conversation between the Congressman and AMAC members was often lively, humorous, and spirited, while at other times, the tone was much more serious given the nature of the issues facing our country. Dr. Benishek was very pleased to have an opportunity to interact with the AMAC members in his district and continues to stay up-to-date on AMAC’s priorities in Washington, D.C.

Phil Roe Nearly 30 AMAC members met with Congressman Phil Roe (TN-01) in the auditorium of the Kingsport Center for Higher Education in Kingsport, Tennessee, on August 25th. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with AMAC members, the three-term Congressman provided an update on the goings-on in Washington, including a presentation highlighting the out-of-control spending of the Obama Administration. Dr. Roe, who sits on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, among others, detailed the current problems at the VA, including hearing of VA employees receiving bonuses for denying veterans continued on pg. 22

medical coverage. He called the woes at the VA a “management problem, not a money problem.” He then discussed the bipartisan work he and his colleagues have engaged in to introduce more accountability into the VA and give veterans private-sector options to alleviate the backlog and eliminate waiting lists. According to Representative Roe, the press that the House of Representatives receive regarding their perceived lack of activity is far from accurate. According Dr. Roe’s count, there are 354 bills that the House has passed, many of them bipartisan, just sitting on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s desk waiting to be brought to the floor of the upper chamber for a vote. The real lack of activity, contends Congressman Roe, is in the Reid-led Senate. AMAC members voiced their concerns about immigration, the Affordable Care Act’s Independent Payment Advisory Board, and President Obama’s abuse of executive orders. Dr. Roe spent nearly two hours at the meeting and met with AMAC members personally when it ended. He capped off the evening by joining AMAC for five years!

- immediately got down to business and interacted with audience members on the most pressing issues of the day. Topical discussion was wide-ranging, with a focus on the key issues most important to the fiscal future and economic health of our great country. AMAC members were particularly interested in discussing ObamaCare’s impact on Medicare, Social Security reform, federal spending, budgets, debt and deficit reduction. Following a robust question and answer period, AMAC members met individually with the Congressman, shook hands and chatted in an open, friendly, and informal manner. All in all, the town hall with Congressman Cotton was a resounding success, a testament to the power and value of the true member-driven, grassroots model exemplified by AMAC.

On Friday, August 1st, 22 AMAC members gathered in the Hampton Township Community Center in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, to meet with RepCongressman Keith resentative Keith Rothfus (PA-12) Rothfus. The Congressman, however, was unexpectedly detained in Washington, D.C., when the House opted to remain in session in order to pass a critical immigration bill. Still, AMAC members in attendance were able to speak with the Congressman, who called in to the meeting to update members on the state of the immigration crisis in America. Answering a number of questions pertaining to

immigration, ObamaCare, and President Obama’s pattern of excessive executive overreach, Rep. Rothfus gave AMAC members insight into the root causes of Washington’s dysfunction. AMAC members expressed their appreciation for having an opportunity for fellowship with likeminded individuals at the meeting, and they were able to make their concerns known to their Congressman.

John Fleming Assembled in a public library in Shreveport, Louisiana, 50 AMAC members turned out to hear from Representative John Fleming. In one hour, the Congressman covered a lot of legislative ground: answering questions about immigration, the future of Social Security, ObamaCare, and the House of Representatives’ decision to sue President Obama for overstepping his executive authority. Though AMAC members expressed frustration with Congress’ inaction, Rep. Fleming rightly noted that the House has passed 357 bills that the “do-nothing Senate” has refused to even consider. The Congressman also took time to warn AMAC members about a dangerous fourth so-called branch of government, the bureaucracies. Government agencies, such as HHS, IRS, and EPA, have grown increasingly more powerful to both create and enforce laws without Congress’ help, thereby averting an important check on executive power. The Congressman greatly appreciated meeting with an informed, passionate group of mature Americans and seniors and urged them to remain up-to-date on the policies being established in Washington. ★

Don’t Buy Survival Food... Until You Read This! Bad news... There are some people out there who think folks like you and me are a bit “odd”. They think having a stockpile ready for a disaster is something they can put off for “someday” or “never”.

This is Frank’s new line of survival food: n

Food4Patriots is an incredible value. This high quality survival food is without any fillers or poor-quality “franken-food” that the other guys use to pad their survival meals. They are made and packaged right here in the U.S.A. You won’t believe the prices on these kits – a fraction of the price that other brands charge.

n

There’s no fancy packaging, it’s military-grade sturdy stuff and can stand up to the crazy things that happen in a crisis. This food has a shelf life of up to 25 years, so you have complete peace of mind for the long term. And he’s using the most compact kits so you can store them anywhere in your home without any extra hassle. They’re sturdy, waterproof and stack easily. And extremely covert too.

But those people are just hiding their heads in the sand. They are dead wrong -- and you are dead right. You’ve seen the evidence and you know the situation is way too serious not to do something about it. When a crisis hits, you’ll be ready. You’ll make darn sure your family won’t go hungry. The fact is, if you don’t take action or if you stockpile the wrong foods, you could be setting your family up to starve. It sounds harsh, but the truth is too many people with good intentions are making critical mistakes with their food stockpiles.

n

MISTAKES LIKE… n

Buying MREs (meals ready to eat) with a 5 year shelf life (depending on where you buy them, they could be nearly expired)…

n

Getting gross survival foods that taste terrible and are so high in salt, MSG and preservatives you could clog your arteries and get yourself sick…

n

Or simply buying the wrong foods and leaving a critical hole in your meal plan, which means your family can become malnourished…

n

You can make these meals in less than 20 minutes; just add boiling water, simmer, and serve. I tried ‘em and I think they taste as good or better than any other survival food I’ve EVER had. And you get a whole slew of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you don’t get stuck eating the same thing day-in and day-out. Frank has come up with some impressive FREE bonuses that are ONLY available to folks who purchase one of his kits on a first-come, first-served basis. For example, my 3-month kit came with 5,400+ heirloom survival seeds, 4 hard copy books, an 11-in-1 survival tool, and some other cool stuff.

Protect your family in a crisis with 25-year shelf life survival food from getfood65.com I want to make sure you don’t miss out on this because this is the #1 item to hoard today. Here’s why… If you don’t take action to get your food stockpile right now, you’ll be in the same boat as the brainwashed masses who think “everything is fine.” And if a crisis hits and your family asks, “What are we going to eat?” your mouth will go dry and you’ll feel powerless. But what if you decide right now to secure your food stockpile instead? Just imagine how much better you’ll feel right away. And if a crisis hits and your family asks, “What are we going to eat?” you’ll calmly reassure them that they’re safe and they will have plenty to eat.

Well, I decided to stop worrying. Obviously, waiting for the government to give me a handout in a disaster just wasn’t an option for me. And I was completely turned off by the crazy prices of survival food sold by most stores.

Listen, I can’t predict the future. I don’t know exactly when or how a crisis will hit. But from everything I see, it could be soon and it could be a big one. That’s why I really want you to get the same peace of mind that I do.

So I got in touch with my buddy Frank Bates and put my order in for his Food4Patriots survival food kits.

P.S. Got a call from Frank and you’ll never believe who just tried to buy up his entire supply of food! You’ll be shocked!

Voters’ Guide

A Voter’s Guide As Americans across the country prepare to head to the voting booth on November 4th, it is important to know which candidates are willing to take a strong stand on the issues of importance to mature Americans and seniors.

T

o help AMAC members navigate the muddied waters of the upcoming midterm elections, AMAC has put together a “voter guide.” This guide highlights 10 of the most significant Senate races in 2014 and provides insight into candidates’ positions on ObamaCare, the national debt, and Social Security. When applicable, we’ve also captured incumbents’ voting records to let you know how they voted on key pieces of legislation such as TARP in 2008, the Stimulus package in 2009 and ObamaCare in 2009. Our country is at a pivotal crossroad, and it is critical that you make your voice heard by voting for candidates that share your beliefs and values. AMAC’s power is rooted firmly in our 1.2 million members, a mighty grassroots voting bloc that can make a difference. It is our responsibility and privilege as Americans to not only vote, but to make informed and educated decisions when we vote. This election holds considerable power in determining the future path on which America will embark and what kind of legacy will be left for our children and grandchildren. Take a look at what the candidates have to say about some of the prevailing political issues of today.

*STIMULUS PACKAGE, H.R. 1, the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009” - Created the economic stimulus package that was signed into law by President Barack Obama, authorizing the government to offset the decrease in private spending by increasing government spending in an effort to create jobs and allow the economy to begin recovering from the “Great Recession.” *OBAMACARE, H.R. 3590, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” - Created new mandates, subsidies, and insurance exchanges in an attempt to increase health care coverage and affordability for individuals through a complete government overhaul of the U.S. health care system.

Explanations of key legislation included in candidates’ voting records: *TARP, H.R. 1424, the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008” Created the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), a $700 billion program signed into law by President George W. Bush that enabled the government to purchase assets and equity from financial institutions to strengthen the financial sector in an effort to mitigate the mortgage crisis.

and improving flexibility and affordability for small businesses. The Senator introduced the Expanded Consumer Choice Act in November 2013, which would create a new tier of coverage – copper plans – to give people shopping for health insurance more options to meet their financial needs.

■ Candidate: Mark Begich

(incumbent) ■ State: Alaska ■ Party: Democratic ■ Issues OBAMACARE: While Senator Begich believes the Affordable Care Act moves the country in the right direction, he thinks it is not perfect and can be improved. Senator Begich has introduced legislation to fix the law so it works better for Alaska families and small businesses. Some of his ideas include increasing consumer choice

DEBT: In addition to supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment and refusing to take a pay raise every year since elected, Senator Begich insists that he has been working across party lines to cut wasteful federal spending - large and small. The Senator supports “getting serious about cutting spending, passing comprehensive tax reform to simplify the tax code and bring down the deficit, and looking to make future investments in energy, education, and infrastructure.” Sources: http://www.markbegich.com/ priorities/fiscal-responsibility/ and http://www.begich.senate.gov/public/ index.cfm/national-debt SOCIAL SECURITY: According to Senator Begich, “the work we are doing today isn’t just for us. Our seniors understand

Congress cannot continue to mortgage our children’s future. It’s reckless and irresponsible. We must enact sound fiscal policy that promotes innovation and job growth, reins in federal spending, and reforms the tax code.” Source: http://www.sullivan2014.com/jobs_the_ economy

about planning for future generations. Not only must we protect our seniors’ hardearned benefits, but we must also ensure those benefits exist for our children and grandchildren. Social Security is fully solvent for at least two decades, and has not added to the federal deficit. It should not be cut or privatized. Social Security is not welfare, but a system of social insurance that protects all of us from utter poverty in the event we retire, suffer a disabling injury or illness, or experience the death of a breadwinner. The promise of Social Security is that hardworking Americans pay into it their whole lives and then count on it to help make ends meet during their retirement years.” Source: http://www.begich.senate.gov/public/index. cfm/seniors

■ Issues OBAMACARE: “Access to affordable and quality health care is an extremely important issue to Alaskans, and it is critical for policy makers to achieve that goal. At the same time, we must revive our national economy and rein in the trillions of dollars of deficits that the Obama Administration has run over the past five years. President Obama and Senator Begich have fundamentally changed the American health care system for the worse through ObamaCare. Now, as a result of Begich’s decision to cast the deciding vote for ObamaCare, Alaskans are losing their health care and facing skyrocketing premiums. It also hurts Alaskans by raising taxes on them, escalating insurance premiums, forcing employers to drop coverage and putting the government in between them and their doctor.” It is time to repeal and replace ObamaCare.” As Alaska’s Attorney General, Sullivan sued to stop ObamaCare. He will continue that fight as U.S. Senator. Source: http://www.sullivan2014.com/healthcare

DEBT: “The Obama Administration has failed to get the economy moving forward, resulting in one of the weakest recoveries from a recession in our nation’s history. Millions of Americans can’t find work. With a debt of over $17 trillion – over $54,000 per U.S. citizen – and counting,

■ Candidate: Tom Cotton (AR04 Representative) ■ State: Arkansas ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “President Obama’s Affordable Care Act is a job-killer, a health-care disaster, and an assault on liberty.” Cotton pledges to fight to repeal and replace ObamaCare with free-market reforms that empower patients and doctors to make health-care decisions. These reforms include medical malpractice reform, small business insurance pools for employees, equal health-care tax treatment, and the ability to purchase insurance across state lines. ObamaCare must be repealed before it does more harm to our economy and health-care system. ObamaCare increases taxes on families and businesses by more than $500 billion and explodes the debt by trillions of dollars. As bad, ObamaCare injects continued on pg. 28

federal bureaucrats into the decisions of patients and doctors. ObamaCare must be repealed entirely. If that does not happen, it must be repealed piece-by-piece. And if that fails, it must be defunded.” Source: http://cotton.house.gov/issues/health-issues

DEBT: “Our country faces a debt crisis because of Washington’s reckless spending and borrowing, and President Obama has produced three straight years of record trillion-dollar deficits. Cotton has pledged to confront this debt crisis directly to prevent leaving our children with a future with less prosperity, fewer jobs, lower living standards, and a diminished America. The first step to fiscal sanity is passing a Balanced Budget Amendment. However, Cotton says that “we must also take action now to stop spending and borrowing, not merely reductions to rates of growth or future, imaginary cuts - to domestic discretionary spending, which has exploded under President Obama. Cotton refuses to vote to increase the federal debt ceiling until real spending and crucial reforms are instituted.” Source: http://cotton.house.gov/issues/spending-cutsand-debt

SOCIAL SECURITY: Congressman Cotton supports no changes to Medicare or Social Security for those currently receiving benefits or for those nearing retirement. For younger workers, Tom Cotton favors common sense reforms like introducing consumer choice and competition that will strengthen and preserve Medicare and Social Security for future generations. First, we must invest in our infrastructure - from high-speed Internet to our roadways and ports - to sharpen our state’s competitive edge and create new jobs. We must make smart reforms to streamline our regulatory system so our businesses have the certainty, confidence, and flexibility they need to invest and expand. Finally, we must responsibility cut our spending and reduce our deficit so we can ensure our state’s economic future.”

■ Issues OBAMACARE: “Despite being ruled constitutional, the President’s health care law still makes it difficult for our economy to grow and takes away the ability of patients to pursue their own health care decisions. The real issue, however, is not whether the law is constitutional or unconstitutional. It is whether it is good or bad for the country. While our health care system needs reform, imposing unpopular and unaffordable mandates is not the solution Health care should be about patients and doctors, not government and bureaucrats. Through promoting greater competition between insurers and by protecting our providers from frivolous lawsuits, we can ensure that consumers receive better services at a lower cost. Congressman Gardner favors replacement legislation that would include tort reform and the buying and selling of insurance across state lines.”

AMAC’s Comeback Kid Getting back in the game. Coming off the bench. Returning to the fast lane. Call it whatever you want, but for AMAC member Dick Anderson it’s a homecoming of sorts, taking him back to a world he once ruled… short track stock car racing.

T

he 66-year old Anderson is set to step back into competition later this year, donning the firesuit and climbing into this newest Modified Stock Car and bringing a renewed level of excitement to Florida’s racing world. In a career that spanned more than five decades, Anderson’s was the car to beat in a sport known for its “beatin, banging, bull ring” contests, usually on oval tracks ranging in size from a quarter mile to a half mile. With well over a thousand feature wins in a racing career that spanned a forty-year period, Anderson has earned, over and over, the title “King of the Florida Short Tracks.” But Anderson didn’t limit his performances to the Deep South. In the mid1980s, for example, he took his show

on the road, so to speak, joining the All Pro Racing Association’s national touring series. The domination continued at this higher level as he found immediate success in the series, competing against more than 50 equally-seasoned drivers and winning some of the biggest events at tracks of all sizes across the nation. Now, after four years in retirement, and suffering through repeated bouts of melancholy so common to those who have scaled the heights, he’s getting set to hit the track again. This time he’ll be carrying the colors of one of the racing world’s premier journals, Circle Track Magazine, with the AMAC Foundation’s logo prominently displayed on the car.

The Anderson Legacy One of the often-repeated phrases in racing over the years, especially by racers at the top of their game, goes like this: “It’s not bragging if you can actually do it!” Although he may never have actually said that, any set of Florida stock car

statistics would bear witness to the fact that Dick Anderson would have license to voice that phrase. He began his career in the Quarter Midget ranks at age 12, and launched his stock car career in 1964 at age 16 at Hialeah Speedway driving a 1949 Ford. Although predominantly known as a Florida driver, his career featured racing success at a host of Midwest and Northern states. photo by: Henry McKenzie

AMAC’s Comeback Kid But it’s not just the total number of wins he’s compiled, it’s the dominance that he and his No. 92 displayed throughout the years that have earned him the respect (oftentimes grudgingly) of his fellow competitors. In 1979, for example, he won 39 feature events at race tracks throughout Florida, setting an all-time state record. The following year, he topped that win total with 51 feature wins (out of the 64 events he entered — an 80% rate), becoming the nation’s winningest stock car driver. That same year, he stunned Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway by winning every feature event held at the track that year… an incredible 18 feature wins in a row!

Anderson is the embodiment of the phrase, “When your life flashes before your eyes, make sure you’ve got plenty to watch!” Here’s just a taste of what he’ll be watching: ■ In the 1970s, he competed in dirt modified leagues in the north-

east (New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania), and was crowned Rookie of the Year at Nazareth (PA) Raceway in 1974 ■ In the 1980s, he captured multiple Late Model Championships at

Palm Beach County Speedway and Hialeah Speedway ■ In 1985, he captured the late model Championship at Bronson

Speedway, winning 16 of 20 feature events (including eight straight) Anderson retired in 2003 at age 56 and, in 2006, returned briefly to competition in the Late Model ranks, winning features at Columbia Speedway and Orlando Speedworld, the only two events he entered. If there were any fears that his driving skills had eroded, they were quickly swept away by his winning these two events in dominant fashion. The man was back… if only for a cameo appearance. From 2006 through 2009, Anderson focused most of his racing expertise on the development and nurturing of several up-and-coming Florida racers. He found immediate success with young Loxahatchee driver Jeff Choquette, winning major events at a variety of tracks, including the 2007 Governor’s Cup at New Smyrna Speedway. Along the way, he’s also engineered cars for emerging drivers like David Wilson, Matt Bowers, Todd Alan, Jessica Murphy, and Devin McLeod, to name a few. So even when

AMAC’s Comeback Kid not behind the wheel, he continued to add to his incredible collection of motor racing accomplishments. But wait… there’s more! In 2010, Anderson again shook off the cobwebs and re-entered Super Late Model Competition, winning five of the six feature events he entered at Orlando Speedworld. Think about it… six decades of racing and still in winning form! The comeback was short-lived, though, with the affects of Florida’s economy causing the loss of his primary sponsor and leading to economic pressures that caused him to park the car. So, at age 62, Anderson hung up the driving suit for the third time, and resigned himself to getting his racing fix from race car design and engineering, and mentoring young drivers trying to break into the highly-competitive sport. But was that enough? It wasn’t long before the itch began to return and in late 2013, with support from Circle Track Magazine, he built a brand new Super Late Model Mustang and began to think about driving it himself. The Florida economy, unfortunately, continued to be a stumbling block, and generating the funding required to run a late model racing program was a major impediment. But Anderson hasn’t let these obstacles stop him, and earlier this year he began building an Open Wheel Modified race car better suited for the Florida short tracks and capable of competing on a lower budget than that required for the late models. Now, at age 66, Anderson is ready to get back behind the wheel, and the competition in this class is already fearing his return. One look at this magnificently designed and engineered racing machine will tell you that he means business, and with his reputation, it’s pretty clear that he’ll be the car to beat in any event he enters. Anderson’s plans are to enter four or five events later this year, with an objective of running a full season in 2015. Scheduling and fund raising are in progress, and it’s likely that an early-Fall kickoff of his fourth comeback will happen. This will undoubtedly be one of the most significant developments in Florida racing this year, and the AMAC Foundation is pleased and proud to be a part of it! ★

The Power of Grassroots Yes…your vote does count!

A

s the November midterm election cycle gears up, pundits and political strategists are observing signs of widespread apathy among voters. In fact, as of late July, the Associated Press reports that “Despite heavy campaign spending that is poised to make history, 15 of the 25 states that have held statewide primary elections each reported a record low percentage of voters who cast ballots.”1 USA Today observations on this same subject2 add further credibility to this concern (see insert). In a country of universal suffrage, this lethargy foretells an erosion of the democratic society that free and fair elections are designed to produce. So why do eligible voters elect to not exercise their polling rights? Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people” and yet, the average percent of eligible voters who actually cast ballots in the past ten years of national elections can’t seem to lift itself anywhere close to 50%. Presidential elections fare slightly better, at about 53%, but the midterm elections suffer a staggeringly low voting rate of well less than 40%! Many studies have been done over the years seeking explanations for this phenomenon of voter apathy, and it often seems that the underlying cause is the conviction in the minds of many voters that their vote is somehow irrelevant. In a recent interview conducted by Inter-

by Gerry Hafer 38 | www.amac.us

national Business Times3, Hunter College (New York City) professor of political science Jamie Chandler put it succinctly, “Apathy, or people not caring about politics, has a lot to do whether or not people believe their voice matters.”

Enter Reality The truth is that votes do matter, and it may surprise you to know that there have been quite a few elections in our country’s history where the margin of victory was unnervingly close. For example, in 1974, the U.S. Senate election in New Hampshire was decided by a margin of two (yes, 2) votes, a statistical margin of one ten thousandths of a percent. Out of the more than 223,000 votes cast, Republican candidate Louis Wyman beat Democrat John A. Durk in a tightly contested race that spanned—with multiple recount efforts—nearly a year. Think about that…if only three more Democratic votes had been cast, the result would have been totally different! Similarly, in 1984 Indiana’s 8th Congressional District election was decided by a four-vote margin (.00171%), again after a series of recounts pivoted the results back and forth several times. In 2008, the Alaska House of Representatives’ District 7 election saw Incumbent Republican Mike Kelly pull out a one-vote decision over Democratic challenger Karl Kassel. Over ten thousand votes were cast in this race, with the final tally being Kelly 5018, Kassel 50174. Think about that also…had one more Republican voter stayed home, and one more Democratic voter shown

up, the balance of power in that district would have been reversed. The 2008 United States Senate election in Minnesota was another classic example of white-knuckle poll results. With over 2.8 million votes cast, Democratic candidate Al Franken appeared to be the loser to Republican Norm Coleman by a mere 215 votes (that’s a margin of less than .00008%!) The closeness of this margin triggered a mandatory recount, including a review of previously-rejected absentee ballots, with the result being a re-certification of the election showing Franken with a 225-vote lead. The re-certification was unsuccessfully contested by the Coleman campaign, and Franken was sworn in to office on July 7, 2009, over eight months after the start of the election. And close elections aren’t only realized in federal contests. In 2004, for example, the gubernatorial election in the state of Washington was decided by a margin of five one thousandths of a percent (133 votes), with Democrat Christine Gregoire defeating Republican Dino Rossi in a hotly contested race that required three recounts to settle. Last year, in Vir-

ginia’s State Attorney General contest, Democrat Mark Herring was certified on November 25, 2013 by the State Board of Elections as the winner over Republican Mark Obenshain by a margin of 1,103,777 to 1,103,612—165 votes, or less than one hundredth of a percent. Presidential elections, too, have had their share of drama attributable to close vote counts. In fact, historically5, the ten closest presidential elections have been decided by an average margin of just 1.7%. Three of these have had margins of less than one half of one percent, with the 1880 election of Republican President James Garfield defeating Democrat Winfield Hancock by a popular vote of one tenth of a percent, Democrat John Kennedy winning over Richard Nixon by a .2% margin, and of course the infamous 2000 election of George Bush (R) over Al Gore (D) in which the popular vote margin was roughly one half of a percent. The 2000 Presidential election was undoubtedly one of the most closely watched, certainly in modern history. It brought with it the rather peculiar situation in which the loser actually received

more than a half million more votes than the winner. This election anomaly (it has only happened four times in U.S. history) resulted from the compilation of electoral votes, with the State of Florida’s 25 votes ultimately decided in favor of Bush after the Supreme Court denied requests for an official recount.

So, Why Don’t People Vote? There are a number of reasons people cite for their disinterest in voting, ranging from being too busy to a dislike of the candidates on the ballot. Considerable research has been done to drill down into this non-participating segment of eligible voters, and a full-scale survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau provided some insight.6 For example, of the more than 15 million surveyed registered voters who did not vote in the 2008 national elections, nearly 44% cited being either too busy, disinterested in the candidates, or at odds with the candidates or ballot issues. Roughly 11% cited logistical problems (transportation, weather, inconvenient polling places, continued on pg. 40

Those were the words of Dr. Ben Carson in his address at the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, and they very effectively framed the incredible opportunity that Conservative voters have before them in the 2014 Mid-Term elections. AMAC joins Dr. Carson in recognizing the importance of ensuring that the will of the people is expressed at the polls, and that the restoration of America’s moral compass takes a major leap forward. But what does it take to turn motivational comments and political rhetoric into action? You! Contrary to what many folks think, all votes count, and not voting for your beliefs is as damaging as voting against what you stand for. AMAC stands with you in the fight to preserve our values of faith, family, and freedom, and this can only be accomplished if all of us turn out to vote!

The Power of Grassroots

A new study shows 14.8% of eligible U.S. voters have cast ballots in the first 25 statewide primaries this year, according to the nonpartisan Center for the Study of the American Electorate. That’s down from 18.3% turnout in the 2010 midterms, when the Tea Party movement was strong and Republicans regained control of the U.S. House.

continued from pg. 39

etc.) About 24% were either ill or out of town, with the remainder citing reasons ranging from registration problems to “just forgot.” As noted earlier, voter turnout in midterm election years lags substantially below that of presidential elections. There is, unfortunately, a perception in the minds of voters that these interim contests are not as critical as those of the center-stage presidential election process, and the corresponding imbalance of media attention seems to support this perception. What is missed in this perception, though, is the fact these midterm contests decide the composition of both the House and the Senate, and thus become the underpinning of what will happen (or not happen) in the country in the years ahead! Local elections also suffer greatly from voter apathy, even though the issues decided at the close-to-home level actually impact the average citizen more quickly and directly than federal elections. Local officeholders have a day-today impact on the lives of the people in their jurisdiction, and can have a clear and compelling affect on the quality of life in towns and communities. And yet there is often a striking disinterest in municipal elections in many areas. In Palm Beach County, Florida, for example, political strategists cite a general malaise attributable to an attitude that, in the absence of a high-visibility, polarizing issue, most voters adopt an attitude that “the problems in their communities eventually would work themselves out or already are lost causes7,” so why bother. With respect to presidential elections, one school of thought that seems to surface repeatedly is the concern that the U.S. Electoral College system tends to foster a degree of voter apathy. Unless you paid close attention during your high school civics classes and have followed the process for electing Presidents, there’s a possibility that the Electoral Col-

40 | www.amac.us

lege concept would lead you to think that your individual vote is irrelevant, since it is not a direct vote for the presidential ticket. The Electoral College system, of course, requires the popular vote to determine how the “electors” are to vote their state’s allocation of electoral votes, so individual votes are in fact relevant to the process. The fundamental argument in the Electoral College process for most people is that the process can lead to the election of a “minority” president, as in the case of George Bush in 2000. While this is a fact, there are many arguments pro and con on the Electoral College system, and it is likely that the debate will continue for years to come. In the meantime, voters can be assured that their vote is integral to the election process, despite the arguments against the indirect system.

What to do About Voter Apathy? As Hunter College’s Jamie Chandler observes, “When 50 percent of the population stays home on Election Day, we get a system of unequal representation. That is, politicians generate benefits for those who vote, and mostly ignore those who don’t.” So, what’s the solution? On the easier-said-than-done side of the equation, the solution is to help eligible voters understand that if they do not vote, it’s the equivalent of surrendering their vote to one who does. But beyond that, and perhaps even more on the easier-said-than-done issue, is the absolute criticality of infusing voters with a genuine understanding of the issues facing the country, state, or municipality and where candidates stand on these issues. This is where organizations like AMAC come in. AMAC takes a stance on key issues facing Americans, and we communicate this stance to members in a number of ways. Take a look at our website’s “About” page (www.AMAC.

(USA Today Politics, July 21, 2014)

US/About) and you’ll find our position on a variety of issues, and our “AMAC In Action” page gives you a feel for what we’re doing on our members’ behalf. Armed with the facts, then, America’s voters can be made to feel more a part of the process, and more likely to recognize the privilege of voting. Once understood, the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt will come to life as a rallying cry: “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” ★ 1 www.politico.com/story/2014/07/study-recordlow-turnouts-seen-in-some-primaries-109221. html#ixzz38PljSnHF 2 onpolitics.usatoday.com/2014/07/21/voter-turnoutprimaries-2014-elections/ 3 www.ibtimes.com/why-there-so-much-voter-apathyus-elections-315494 4 ballotpedia.org/Alaska_House_of_Representatives_ elections,_2008 5 www.toptenz.net/top-10-closest-presidentialelections.php 6 7

AMAC in Action AMAC Members Send Congress 20,000 E-mails in Support of Home Healthcare

AMAC members from across the country flooded the United States Congress with over 20,000 e-mail appeals urging them to support H.R. 5110, the SAVE Medicare Home Healthcare Act. The bill will repeal the ObamaCare-inspired cuts to vital home healthcare services for Medicare’s oldest, sickest and poorest beneficiaries. The cuts, which were instituted on January 1 of this year, will not only reduce funding for home healthcare by approximately $22 billion, but also threaten to eliminate nearly 500,000 jobs in this important healthcare sector. AMAC members were so successful in forcing this issue onto Congress’ radar that several Representatives stepped forward to co-sponsor this legislation as a result of our call to action.

The 2014 AMAC Foundation Health Care Symposium Has Set The Stage!

For years, American patients have expressed deep concern for the broken U.S. health care system. While it is true that America’s health care system is in trouble, AMAC is leading the way to develop innovative, common sense solutions to strengthen access to and delivery of health care for the American people. On June 9th and 10th, the AMAC Foundation conducted its first National Health Care Symposium at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The focus of the event was health care, its problems, and what can be done to fix them.

The highly informative and educational event featured a number of topnotch speakers, including, Robert Moffit, Director of the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Health Policy Studies; Douglas Holtz-Eakin, President of the American Action Forum; Michael Cannon, Director of Health Policy Studies at the Cato Institute; and Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute – just to name a few. Speakers and panelists addressed a number of important issues related to health care, offered an alternative perspective to understanding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and discussed ways to improve programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). As a whole, the symposium highlighted a more conservative approach to health care reform that emphasizes free-market involvement and abstains from intrusive and ineffective government interference in the management and delivery of health care. AMAC Award reception On Tuesday, September 16, 2014 AMAC held its second annual AMAC Award reception on Capitol Hill. The reception, held in conjunction with National Grandparents Day, recognizes two legislators who have compiled a track record of consistent support for mature Americans and seniors. This year’s recipients are Senator Marco Rubio (FL) and Congressman Phil Gingrey (GA-11). Both of these representatives have shown leadership and vision on many issues, including two of the most perceptible issues for AMAC members: Social Security and health care. AMAC has endorsed legislation from both of these lawmakers and looks forward to expanding our relationship with their offices as we head into the new Congress in 2015. ★

Old Cookbook Reveals

“Amazing Details of Washington’s Dining Habits”

by Guy Coalter, Special Features Writer

Canton OH, Special - With hundreds of servants at her command... a person would think our first First Lady was a woman of leisure. Not so... according to a new historical discovery. A long out-of-print volume entitled, “The Martha Washington Cook Book” shows Mrs. Washington personally supervised her entire household staff... and especially the kitchen and dining room servants. Martha made sure every dish served at Mount Vernon... as well as in the first Presidential “White Houses” in New York and Philadelphia... was prepared exactly as called for in her personal cookbook. The family cookbook was given to Martha at the time of her first marriage. In 1749, beautiful seventeen-year-old Martha Dandridge married Daniel Parke Custis. As a wedding gift, the Custis family presented Martha with a family cookbook entitled Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats. Handwritten by an unknown hand, there is evidence the recipe book had been in the Custis family for generations. It is quite likely this was a family heirloom dating back to the early 1600s. In all, there were over five hundred classic recipes, dating largely from Elizabethan and Jacobean times, the golden age of English cookery. Later, Martha Custis became a widow and in 1759 she married Col. George Washington. Washington was to become the Father of our country and its first President. Martha, of course, became our very first, “First Lady.” Martha kept and used her family cookbook for over fifty years. In 1799, she presented the book to her granddaughter, Eleanor Parke Custis as a wedding gift when she married Lawrence Lewis. The cookbook was handed down from mother to daughter until 1892 when the Lewis family presented it to The Historical Society of Pennsylvania where it still resides today. In 1940, the Society gave permission to historian Marie Kimball to study the manuscript and prepare a cookbook entitled, “The Martha Washington Cook Book.” Although now long out-of-print,

an Ohio publisher was recently commissioned to reprint a limited edition of this rare and amusing piece of Americana. Accordingly, a limited number of copies are being made available to the public at this time. Each volume is numbered and when the present printing is exhausted, there is no contract to print more. These cookbooks could very easily become valuable collectors items.

Martha Washington “The Martha Washington Cook Book” includes facsimile copies of several actual pages from the one-of-a-kind original manuscript. Then, Mrs. Kimball chose over 200 delicious unique recipes from Martha Washington’s personal cookbook and completely modernized them so you can easily prepare them in your own kitchen! The original recipes were written for a huge household including numerous servants. Many called for dozens of eggs and gallons of one thing or another. Marie Kimball “trimmed” each recipe to quantities of ingredients for a family of six. You’ll get dozens of delicious recipes for Soups, Fish, Meats, Meat Pies, Poultry and Game, Sauces, Eggs - Mushrooms and Cheese, Fritters and Pancakes, Pastry Pies and Tarts, Cakes, Creams and Jellies, Puddings, Preserves, and Beverages.

Perhaps more interesting for us history buffs is the detailed description of the kitchen and dining habits in the George Washington household. Martha sat at the head of the table with her husband at her side to the right. Despite dozens of servants around the table, either Martha or George always carved the meats to be served! You’ll absolutely love dozens of other interesting details of this historical dining room. “The Martha Washington Cook Book” is a beautiful perfect bound book you will be proud to display on your coffee table, bookshelf, or where ever you keep your very best books. Your friends and neighbors are guaranteed to be envious... and you are guaranteed to be completely satisfied with your cookbook. You may examine and use it for a full three months and return it for a full no-questions-asked refund if you desire. Although not available in bookstores, you may order your cookbook directly from the publisher. There is a strict limit however, of only two copies per customer. To get your copy, simply write your name and address on a plain piece of paper. Mail it along with your remittance of only 19.95 plus $3.98 postage and handling (total of $23.93, OH residents please add 6.5% sales tax) payable to: James Direct Inc, Special Offer M825, 500 S. Prospect Ave., Box 980, Hartville, Ohio 44632. You may charge to VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express by including your card number, expiration date and signature. For even faster service, have your credit card handy and telephone toll-free 1-800-310-7610 and ask for Special Offer M825. Act within the next 15 days and the publisher will include a free bonus... a selection of delightful recipes from the personal cookbook of President Thomas Jefferson! “The Martha Washington Cookbook” makes an appreciated gift for any gift-giving occasion. Readers of this publication may request a second copy for only $6.07 postpaid. (Total of $30 ©2014 JDI M0139S06 for both.) http://www.jamesdirect.com

A Swiss Adventure – Heidi Comes to Life Parents and Grandparents alike are delighted to share Johanna Spyri’s 1880 classic children’s story “Heidi” with newer generations.

T

he story is about the life of an orphaned young girl left the care of her mountain-dwelling grandfather, which became one of the bestselling books ever written. In passing years, the book was adapted to theatre, television and motion pictures, the most famous of films starring the beloved curly-topped Shirley Temple. The movie begins on a bright June morning in the beautiful Swiss Alps, south of the Great Black Forest in Germany. The dramatic backdrop nearly steals the first scene as Heidi and her Aunt trudge up a steep path leading to the village of Dörfli dressed in traditional folk costume. Throughout the movie, views of the mountains are observed, along with breathtaking scenery viewed outward through the entrance of Grandfather’s cottage. With the arrival of winter, the snow-capped mountains touch viewers’ senses and capture the spirit of Switzerland. The Swiss Alps represent one of three main physiographic regions in Switzerland, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains. zerland. The southern ranges from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif are shared with other countries. Bernese Oberland, the highest part of the canton of Bern, Switzerland offers stunning scenery year-round. The snow-capped peaks seemingly extend into the heavens. Mountainous hues of white, blue and gray meet a foreground of lush forest and rolling green hills. One may picture Heidi and Grandfather high up on the peaks with views extending as far as the eyes can see. Gear up for a modern day adventure culminating in a visit to Heidi’s house. Begin your tour of Switzerland in the classic Swiss village of Grindelwald which lies in a green hollow of the Bernese Alps in western Switzerland. The town is easily accessible from international airports at Zürich, Geneva and Basel or from the regional airport at Bern. It is also reachable by train, auto and bus. The glacier village of Grindelwald is a famous winter tourist destination and bears a unique cosmopolitan vibe. An abundance of short and long distance trails make skiing and hiking excellent hobbies for all experience levels and attracts a steady flow of visitors to the region. Magnificent vistas of the Wetterhorn and Eiger provide commanding views and dramatic lookout points. In the glacier village of Grindelwald, spend the night in a quiet part of town at the 26-room Hotel Gletschergarten. Relax in comfort at this scenic chaletstyle inn featuring charming window

boxes. This 4th generation hotel is run by the Michel-Breitenstein family. The hotel is ideally tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the village. Spacious rooms with balconies provide comfort and present outstanding views of the mountains and sunsets. Not far from the hotel is the Main Street, brimming with shops, restaurants and seasonal outdoor cafés. Historic churches with tolling bells and museums lend to the town’s charm. The beautiful mountain backdrop adds a majestic feel. After an adventurous day on the slopes, hiking, or exploring the town, Hotel Gletschergarten provides a peaceful night’s slumber. Swiss adventures continue aboard the Bernese Oberland Railway, on a 35 minute ride to the quaint town of Interlaken. The town rests between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and under the triple peaks of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger Mountains. Interlaken’s ideal location makes

daily excursions to nearby towns such as Bern, Lucerne and Thun remarkably easy. Stroll along Interlaken’s “Höheweg” promenade which links urban Interlaken West with Interlaken East. The town is famous for its souvenirs and watches and is a shopper’s haven. The snowkissed Alpine peaks contrast with the deep green valley, creatively casting light and dark shadows fit for a painting. Nestled on the shores of Lake Brienz is the 40-room Seehotel La Terrasse Bönigen, an Alpine hotel run by the Hohermuth & Budd families. The hotel is located in the center of the Jungfrau region of the Bernese Oberland. The garden terrace overlooks the uniquely turquoise blue waters of the lake. Guests may relax and dine, while outstanding mountains views draw the scenery upward. Tastes of international and seasonal cuisine are part of the dining repertoire. The rooms are cozy and clean

and provide a rustic feel to complement uninterrupted natural mountain and lake views. To gain unique perspectives of the lake and land, take a 1.5 hour ambiance filled boat ride from Interlaken Ost (East) to the wood carving and violin making village of Brienz. Visit the internationally known shops of the woodcarvers and witness exquisite works of art. Walk up a small hill to the local church for prayer and to view the church’s magnificent hand-carved woodwork fashioned by local talent. Those interested in music are encouraged to visit a Swiss violin Making School on the town’s previous main road (Oberdorfstrasse 94). Spend an overnight at the charming old world Grandhotel Giessbach, high above Brienz, in a room which overlooks a dramatic cascading waterfall scene. Guests of the historic 70-room hotel may ride the funicular railway to ascend to the

hotel. The roughly four minute railway ride takes passengers over bridges, alongside waterfalls and through pristine woods. The hotel structure’s lack of contemporary scheme preserves the rustic charm of the historic 1870’s built hotel. It was first owned by the Hauser family of Zürich, one of the great dynasties of the hotel industry. The facility traditionally served as a meeting place of high society, with poets and philosophers. Fading fame and disrepairs temporarily closed the hotel. Swiss ecologist Franz Weber purchased and gifted the 22-hectare estate (54 acres) to the citizens of Switzerland. The gift of time at Giessbach is to be celebrated. The castle-like hotel in the colder months is reminiscent of an idyllic scene in a snow-globe. Discover indescribable white covered mountains, snowy forests and wintry alpine meadows. continued on pg. 48

A Swiss Adventure – Heidi Comes to Life continued from pg. 47

Just outside of Brienz is Swiss Open Air Museum Ballenberg. This must-see museum is located on a 164 acre site. Explore over one hundred architectural and traditional buildings of the country. The structures are separated by regions (cantons), with most interiors allowing visitors to walk inside. Witness demonstrations of rural and local crafts from the 14th to 19th century and learn the history and tradition of cheese making. Stroll the property and see old farmhouses, traditional gardens, fields and a plethora of farmyard animals, set against a backdrop of beautiful mountain scenery. Let impressions of bucolic life in rural Switzerland come to life in a visit to this culturally rich museum. From Brienz, head to the predominantly German-speaking city of Lucerne (Luzern) via a 90 minute train ride. Explore the beautiful bridges of Lake Lucerne to see the world-famous Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. This oldest wood-covered footbridge in Europe spans the Reuss River and is named for the nearby St. Peter’s Chapel. The restored bridge contains interior paintings which date back to the 17th century. By day, enjoy downtown pedestrian zones and view houses with painted

facades which date to the 19th and early 20th century. The area is rich in culture, evident in a large array of museums, artistic and musical venues. Come nightfall, unwind in one of 41 guestrooms at the luxurious Grand Hotel National Luzern. The historic hotel is situated on the shore of Lake Lucerne and was built in 1870 by César Ritz and Auguste Escoffier. Elegant rooms include Italian marble floors, walls covered in silk wallpaper, and the finest of furnishings. From the hotel, one can see the famous Rigi, Stanserhorn and Pilatus mountains and the highest peaks of central Switzerland. A lakeside balcony view is optimal. Lucerne’s city nightscape becomes a breathtaking bounty of glistening lights which bounce off the lake, earning it Paris’s similar moniker “The City of Light.” Depart Lucerne via train and head south of Lake Lucerne to Altdorf. Arrive in the Lower Reuss Valley, in the Uri Region, where hamlets rest on the high terraces above the little town. Visit the History Museum Uri to discover exhibitions displayed in a neo-Gothic museum. View religious pieces of art, including portraits of Pope Pius X and Pope Pius XI. If you’re fortunate to be in town during one of Altdorf’s festivals, appreciate great folk or

modern music or theatre performances of the famous Tell Festival. Delight in regional food and taste the Uri Alpine cheese, a regional specialty, to absorb the true flavor of the Alps. A roughly hour and a half drive to Ober Rofels, Maienfeld, delivers you into Heidi Country. Though the village of Dörfli is fictional in “Heidi,” it is understood that Johanna Spyri incorporated visions of small hamlet towns bearing likeness to those she visited as a child. Johanna Spyri writes “From the old and pleasantly situated village of Mayenfeld, a footpath winds through green and shady meadows to the foot of the mountains, which on this side look down from their stern and lofty heights upon the valley below. The land grows gradually wilder as the path ascends, and the climber has not gone far before he begins to inhale the fragrance of the short grass and sturdy mountain-plants, for the way is steep and leads directly up to the summits above.” Ober Rofels is a picturesque dwelling bearing great likeness to Spyri’s description. It has genuinely become known to the world as Heididorf (Heidi’s village) where an old house has been made into a museum named Heidhaus (Heidi’s house). The hearts of those who embrace Spyri’s story will discover immense pleasure in visiting the charming yet no-frills site. Those who step foot upon the land will gain insight into what it was like to live in a Swiss Alpine home over 100 years ago and to rekindle the true spirit of Heidi. ★

But we must commit ourselves to reining in our massive long-term deficits, which threaten to saddle future generations with debt that could trigger disastrous inflation and cripple our economy. As North Carolinians work hard to recover from the economic downturn, Senator Hagan is leading the fight to boost our economy and grow jobs for middle class families right now. From years working in the private sector, the Senator knows that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and she has supported efforts to increase access to capital for small business owners and encourage retailers to make investments that boost the economy. Senator Hagan knows that more than anything, North Carolina business owners need certainty. That’s why she supports a long-term, balanced, and bipartisan plan to reduce our deficits, make the tax code simpler and more fair, and restore the confidence that business owners need to implement plans, increase hiring and grow their companies.” Source: http://www.kayhagan.com/issues/jobs/

In an effort to protect Social Security, the Senator has opposed a complicated formula called ‘Chained CPI’ that would amount to cuts in Social Security benefits for North Carolina seniors who rely on them. NC House of Representatives) ■ State: North Carolina ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “ObamaCare is a cancer on our national economy and it threatens the quality of every American’s health care. It is paralyzing business expansion, displacing families from the health coverage they have now, raising costs, and threatening the federal treasury for all future years. ObamaCare is ridden with policies that are bad for families, bad for seniors, bad for businesses, and bad for the economy. Tillis will fight in the Senate for full repeal of ObamaCare, for defunding ObamaCare, and he will work to implement private sector solutions to reduce health care costs for North Carolinians.” Source: http://thomtillis.com/meet-thom/

DEBT: “After a long career in private business, balancing budgets is not just theory; it’s what he does. As the leader of the reform movement that took over the North Carolina legislature, Thom Tillis led the passing of a balanced budget every year he’s been Speaker. Because of these accomplishments, North Carolina has seen a reduction in state debt. In the Senate, Tillis will be a stalwart conservative reformer, pushing at every opportunity for the tough decisions it will take to balance the budget every year by cutting spending, and reducing our outrageous $17 trillion national debt. With lower tax burdens, businesses can grow and hire more workers. Dr. Cassidy recognizes that families, not Washington, know how to make the most productive use of their hard earned money. He also signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, demonstrating that he will oppose efforts to increase taxes. He understands that we must get federal spending under control by cutting the wasteful and duplicative programs to ensure the long term financial health of the United States and protect our children and grandchildren from mountains of debt they cannot afford.” Source: http://cassidy.house.gov/issues/budget-andtaxes

■ Candidate: Bill Cassidy, M.D.

(Representative LA-06) ■ State: Louisiana ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “Congressman Cassidy’s life’s work has been focused on providing health care to people in need. Over 30 years, Cassidy witnessed the government get more involved in patient care but did not witness improved quality or access to health care because of government intervention. That’s why he believes in free-market health care solutions that give patients the power, not Washington DC bureaucrats. Dr. Cassidy supports health care legislation that will repeal ObamaCare and replace it with reforms that will help ensure access to affordable, quality health care to all Americans without adding to our national debt. This new law should employ a variety of innovative solutions to lower costs by shifting the balance of power in health care decisionmaking from insurance companies and the government to patients, including: tort reform, greater flexibility for the use of Health Savings Accounts, providing tax

She supports patient-centered reforms that improve the quality and accessibility of health care and believes that health care choices are best made by families, not Washington bureaucrats. The Congresswoman has repeatedly voted against President Obama’s health care reform legislation, the Affordable Care Act. She firmly believes that ObamaCare increases taxes and government mandates while doing nothing to stem the ever-increasing costs of health care. While we need to reform our health care system, ObamaCare is deeply flawed and only adds to our nation’s economic uncertainty. Once fully implemented, ObamaCare will impose 21 separate tax increases equaling more than $1 trillion in new taxes over the next 10 years.

SOCIAL SECURITY: “Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito has worked to protect and shore up these important safety net programs for West Virginia’s seniors. Shelley has steadfastly opposed President Obama’s cuts to the Medicare Advantage program, as well as former President George W. Bush’s proposal to privatize Social Security. Future generations of Americans deserve to know that we will keep our promise of Social Security and Medicare, but we must address the shaky fiscal footing of these crucial programs. By the middle of the next decade, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and interest on the debt are projected to consume 100 percent of federal government revenues. SOCIAL SECURITY: “Social Security is an important income security program for Americans, and Tennant opposes any effort to privatize the program. There are ways to help insure the program’s solvency without jeopardizing benefits to those who receive them. For many of our seniors, Social Security is a sole source of stable income after retirement. Tennant supports the annual cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security and she opposes efforts to change the formula, especially formula adjustments that do not take into account the significantly higher health care and drug costs our seniors pay.” ■ Candidate: Natalie Tennant

(Secretary of State in WV) ■ State: West Virginia ■ Party: Democrat ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “As the mother of a child who has been denied health-care coverage because of a pre-existing condition, Natalie Tennant understands the anxiety associated with not having access to affordable health care. However, she is disappointed about the implementation of health care reform because it has made it harder for West Virginians to get affordable coverage they expected. Changes must be made to the Affordable Care Act in order for the law to work for West Virginians. Tennant believes we must work to attract additional health-insurance providers to the West Virginia marketplace so that West Virginians have more options and cheaper premiums; delay the individual mandate penalty; provide additional relief to small businesses and streamline reporting requirements; and enable West Virginians to keep their doctors.” Source: http://natalietennant.com/issues/#healthcare

Grimes believes that there is a responsible path to balancing the budget. We need to start by going line-by-line through the budget to cut waste, fraud and abuse and we must ensure that tax dollars are being used smartly and efficiently. ■ Candidate: Terri Land (Michigan’s

Secretary of State) ■ State: Michigan ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “As a candidate for U.S. Senate, Terri Land supports policies that will provide real health care reform. In Washington, politicians rarely admit when their policies aren’t working. In fact, the greater the failure, the less willing a politician is to admit that their idea has failed. The result is that Americans needlessly suffer. That is exactly what is happening today as a result of ObamaCare. This law is based on the idea that Washington should control your health care dollars and that government can force you to buy insurance, access your medical records, dictate your medical decisions, and restrict your health care choices.” Land, however, favors a different approach. Her ideas include giving patients control over their health care dollars and health care decisions; expanding access to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs); encouraging competition among insurance companies to lower health care costs; purchasing insurance across state lines; improving transparency with respect to health care prices; and ensuring coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions. Peters has fought against the more than 40 partisan attempts to repeal the law because we cannot afford to lose these critical protections.” “Peters is frustrated by some of the problems Michiganders have experienced with the health care rollout, including issues related to the website. That’s why Peters supports bipartisan solutions to improve the law like delaying penalties for individuals and small businesses and exempting volunteer firefighters. He also voted for the ‘If You Like Your Plan You Can Keep It’ Act to ensure that Michiganders can keep their plans while learning about other coverage options. It is time for Washington to adopt a practical and responsible approach to addressing our nation’s fiscal challenges, which is why Gary’s repeatedly been an independent voice for eliminating wasteful government spending and reducing the deficit. Peters has always worked to improve oversight and fiscal responsibility from government. In the State Senate, he kept his office spending well below budget and returned an entire year’s office budget back to the Treasury. In Congress, he has done the same, returning nearly $500,000 over the last four years to help pay down the deficit.”

SOCIAL SECURITY: “Monica Wehby believes that Social Security and Medicare must be preserved and protected. Our seniors spent their entire lives paying into those systems and Wehby will oppose any change to the benefits that have already been promised to seniors who are at or near retirement. However, these programs are on track to become insolvent, leaving the next generation of seniors to face the possibility that they will face serious cuts to their benefits. In order to make sure that doesn’t happen, we need to enact legislation that puts them on a path to being financially secure.”

SOCIAL SECURITY: “Peters believes the essence of the American Dream is the promise that if you work hard and play by the rules, you will find a good-paying job, raise a family, and have the ability to retire with dignity. It’s a promise Peters will fight to see fulfilled. Social Security is one of the most successful programs in our history and has helped thousands of Michigan seniors stay out of poverty in their retirement and live with dignity. Peters has stood firmly against those who want to end the Social Security guarantee and privatize the program. Congressman Peters will fight for Michigan seniors and middle class families to strengthen and secure these vital programs for future generations.” Source:http://www.petersformichigan.com/issues/ seniors/

■ Candidate: Monica Wehby, M.D. ■ State: Oregon ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “In 2009, while ObamaCare was rolling down the legislative pike, Dr. Wehby was a prominent opponent of the ACA. One hundred fifty thousand people have had their health insurance plans cancelled in Oregon. Premiums have increased. Medicare Advantage benefits for the state’s seniors have been cut The Obama Administration is constantly changing its rules and regulations and delaying its mandates. This system is so flawed that it needs to be repealed and replaced with a patient-centered, market-based approach like the one Wehby outlined in November of 2013 that increases access that is actually affordable. It’s radically different from what the President and Jeff Merkley forced through on a partisan basis.”

DEBT: “As a single mother of four teenagers, balancing a career and a budget can be a difficult thing; but it is vitally important to Wehby and her family. Our nation spends forty cents on the dollar just to pay for our debt servicing. If we don’t do something to end this fiscal insanity our entire country will end up like Greece or Detroit. This is generational theft. As Oregon’s U.S. Senator, Wehby would enact a Balanced Budget Amendment so that we don’t leave our kids with our legacy of debt. It’s a moral imperative that we as Americans strive to ensure that the next generation has access to the same opportunities we had growing up.”

■ Candidate: Jeff Merkley

(incumbent) ■ State: Oregon ■ Party: Democrat ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “To make our health care system work for American families and small businesses, Senator Merkley voted in favor of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Although the implementation of the law has been deeply flawed in Oregon, the new system makes important changes that must be preserved. It stops insurance companies from denying people coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition or dropping coverage once someone actually gets sick. It

DEBT: No position stated. SOCIAL SECURITY: “Senator Merkley is adamantly opposed to proposals that would fundamentally alter Social Security’s make-up by privatizing the program or diverting Social Security revenues into risky Wall Street private accounts. The Senator is committed to preserving the promise of Social Security, which is on solid fiscal footing for another generation, and will work with his Senate colleagues and President Obama to further strengthen the Social Security system. Senator Merkely also supports boosting the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for Social Security so it accurately reflects real living costs for our seniors and gives them a modest raise. He opposes ‘chained CPI,’ which would cut the COLA.” Source: http://www.merkley.senate.gov/issues/ issue/?id=24415f59-983b-4091-b9f6-30d7d0ed4e80

our economy at a time of continued economic challenge and high unemployment. We need to undo sequestration, which makes cuts without strategic priorities and endangers necessary investments while preserving wasteful and inefficient programs. It is time to put the country back in the business of job growth and opportunity, creating opportunities that are central to the American dream: good jobs, strong schools, and safe and thriving communities. If elected to the U.S. Senate, Nunn pledges to cut the deficit and the debt by applying the same values that she has learned by running a $30 million dollar organization. SOCIAL SECURITY: “Congress needs to confront the issue of mandatory spending programs, including Social Security and Medicare, which take up approximately 60% of the budget. As a result of rising health care costs and the higher numbers of Baby Boomers reaching retirement age, Medicare spending alone is now 3.6% of our GDP and is projected to continue to rise. The trustees of the Medicare trust project that the hospital insurance portion of Medicare could be depleted by 2026; and Social Security will be forced to cut benefits by 23% in 2033 if nothing is done. ■ Candidate: Michelle Nunn ■ State: Georgia ■ Party: Democrat ■ Issues OBAMACARE: No position stated. DEBT: “Washington needs to recognize that our national debt threatens future generations. As we tackle the long-term fiscal challenges, we should ensure that we make targeted investments to grow

■ Candidate: David Perdue ■ State: Georgia ■ Party: Republican ■ Issues OBAMACARE: “ObamaCare is an overreaching federal program that will actually reduce the quality of health care and increase costs. Perdue is one of the millions of Americans that had my personal policy cancelled after being told I could keep it. To make matters worse, Obamacare is discouraging full-time job creation. The consequences of politicians passing a massive bill without reading it continue to emerge. We need to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with more affordable free market solutions.” Source: https://perduesenate.com/issues/more.html

DEBT: “The crushing national debt has surpassed $17 trillion. We must act now to rein it in before it becomes unsustainable. Of course we have to cut wasteful spending and unnecessary bureaucracy. We have to eliminate the billions of dollars in failed government programs and redundant agencies. However, the best way to begin getting the debt under control is to grow the economy without a tax increase. In the midst of a terrible economy, this would be the worst possible time to raise taxes on anyone. Too many families and too many businesses are struggling to get by. I will not support a tax increase of any kind. Furthermore, the federal tax code is too complicated and misaligned. It should be completely overhauled as a means to promote growth and encourage more domestic economic investment. His preference is the Fair Tax. In addition, Perdue would absolutely vote for a balanced budget amendment. However, we need immediate tax and regulatory reforms along with appropriate spending cuts so that we have a right-sized, responsible budget sooner rather than later.” Source: https://perduesenate.com/issues/more.html

Just the Two of Us Cooking for a large group can be daunting, but shopping for and preparing a meal for just one or two people presents its own challenges.

I

s it possible to enjoy a varied and delicious diet without having excess leftovers or throwing spoiled food away? How can you purchase smaller quantities of fresh food? What do you do when your favorite foods only come in largesized packages? The following tips may help:

Meat, poultry and fish purchased in family size packages can be divided into smaller portions, wrapped in heavy duty foil or freezer wrap, labeled and frozen. Placing plastic wrap between individual meat patties or pieces is also helpful.

Buy cheeses from the deli department where smaller amounts can be purchased.

If you’d like to make egg salad but don’t want to buy a whole dozen eggs – pick up a couple of hard boiled eggs from the salad bar too.

Leftover canned and jarred ingredients can be transferred to non-metallic containers, covered and refrigerated for later use. Leftover beef or chicken broth can be frozen in ice cubes trays and used when just a small amount is needed.

Dust unused portions of chopped peppers, carrots and onions with flour, place on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen, transfer to freezer bags and use as needed in casseroles, soups or other cooked dishes.

Large sized casseroles can be separated into two smaller portions; bake one right away and freeze the other for later.

Wash only the portion of a vegetable that you are planning to eat right away. The remainder will last longer if unwashed.

Take advantage of grocery store salad bars where smaller amounts of already chopped vegetables and fruits are available.

Leftover raw vegetables can be blanched and then frozen. Broccoli, cauliflower, corn, green beans and peas freeze especially well.

Chicken Romano for 2 ❏ 2 thin sliced boneless chicken cutlets ❏ 2 Tbs. seasoned breadcrumbs ❏ 2 Tbs. Parmesan cheese ❏ 1 Tbs. olive oil

❏ 1 14 ½ oz. can diced tomatoes with Italian herbsdrained – liquid reserved ❏ 1 large clove of garlic – peeled and crushed ❏ 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar ❏ 3 Tbs. fresh basil leaves – coarsely chopped

Combine breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. Dredge chicken cutlets in crumb mixture. Heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Brown chicken and cook through, 2 – 3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a plate, and cover with foil. Add tomatoes, garlic, vinegar and 1/3 cup of tomato liquid. Cook 2 minutes, stirring until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and discard garlic. Stir in basil. Spoon sauce over cutlets and serve

When a small portion of onion is needed – cut up a shallot instead.

Consider shopping with a friend and splitting large packages or “buy one – get one free” offers. Although, most recipes are written with larger families in mind, cookbooks and magazines featuring recipes that serve 1 or 2 are available. Visit your local library or bookstore. In the meantime, use these recipes to create a tasty dinner for 2 which is delicious and simple to prepare. Serve them with your favorite vegetable or salad. Bon Appetite! ★

Garlic - Parmesan Orzo for 2 ❏ 8 oz. Orzo pasta ❏ 1½ cups low-salt chicken broth ❏ 1 large clove garlic – minced ❏ Salt

❏ 2 Tbs. butter – cut in pieces ❏ ¼ cup Parmesan cheese ❏ 1 Tbs. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

Cook orzo in boiling water until al dente – drain. Meanwhile, boil chicken broth until reduced to ½ cup. Add garlic and a pinch of salt. Whisk in butter one piece at a time. Toss the orzo with the broth mixture. Add the parmesan cheese and parsley, and combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately, sprinkled with additional parmesan cheese.

Joke of the Month A man drives into a gas station. The attendant goes to fill his tank and notices 5 penguins in the back seat. The attendant says, “Hey - why do you have 5 penguins in your car?” The driver says, “I KNOW! I was just stopped at a light back there and they climbed into my car and now I don’t know what to do!” The attendant thinks for a second and says, “I’ll tell you what I’d do - I’d take them to the zoo.” The driver says, “That’s a good idea - I’ll do that!” A week later the driver pulls into the gas station and the attendant sees the same 5 penguins, only now they’re wearing sunglasses. The attendant asks, “What are you doing?! I thought I told you to take those penguins to the zoo!” “We did go! We had a great time! Today we’re going to the beach!” Heard any good ones lately? Send them in!

Please submit your joke by emailing info@amac.us or mailing to Joke of the Month, c/o AMAC 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400, Bohemia, NY 11716. Your joke may be featured in our next magazine!

Visit alphapub.com to read Natural-law Essays and eBooks FREE If asked to surrender your will, would you? Probably not. But consider the countless times people do surrender their will every day? “No,” you say, “I don’t, and I never would!” Well, think about how people surrender to laws of nature called Laws of Physics. Does anybody argue with gravity, ignore friction, or lean to the left turning right? However, there is one little-known natural law that most people are ignoring. It was identified by Richard Wetherill decades ago, and he named it the Law of Right Action. It tells people to think, say, and do what is rational, honest, and morally right to get right results. But since most people unknowingly contradict that law with their plans, society’s overwhelming wrong results prevail. Daily newscasts report the tragedies of warfare, corrupt politics, crimes, financial problems, and afflictions labeled “cause unknown.” But who thinks that obeying a natural law could stop those wrong results? Answer: After learning about creation’s Law of Right Action, those who obey it eagerly report the gratifying changes it has made in their family lives, jobs, and social activities. Obeying the creator’s Law of Right Action fulfills the promised “peace on earth, good will for all mankind!”

“Just found your site. I was quite impressed and look forward to hours of enjoyment and learning. Thanks.” - Frank

“I have finished reading the book How To Solve Problems. So simple, yet so profound and powerful. Thank you.” - Alex
