Can one person make a difference? Historians are in agreement that George Washington was indispensable to the creation of our nation. He was the one person without whom the United States of America may not exist. Fittingly, he earned the title “Father of our Nation.” Winston Churchill was called to head his government at a time of great need, and he performed extraordinarily well in saving Great Britain from the clutches of the maniac Adolf Hitler. We could go on with other examples, Bill Gates and Microsoft etc., but we come back to the essential idea; that one person does make a difference. Sometimes that difference is monumental. The United States is at a critical stage in our history. Never before have we been in such debt during peacetime. We are borrowing money from other nations to pay the interest on that debt. By Dan Weber The unprincipled politicians’ luring promises to give voters benefits President & Founder, from the government have become an addiction to half of our citizens. Association of Mature American Citizens The Constitution has been violated in so many ways. Freedom to practice religion has been turned into rulings outlawing religion from our society and the role of government has been expanded to control all aspects of our lives. Terrorists threaten us in increasing ways and a flood of immigrants is causing havoc. Is there one person who can stand up to these challenges, who has the courage and the wisdom to restore our God given rights? In this issue we begin to look at some of the candidates for president. AMAC chose Ted Cruz as the first in a series of profiles on the 2016 Presidential Candidates because he is leading in the polls for the first primary. By the time the magazine is printed, the Iowa vote will have come in already. In subsequent issues we’ll take a closer look at the others vying for that office, and with God’s blessing the voters will make the right choice. Sincerely,

Dan Weber, Publisher

Did You Know... Hiding in Plain Sight Could it be that King Tut’s tomb was a handy, makeshift burial chamber when he died suddenly at the age of 19? At least one Egyptologist believes the tomb was actually built for his predecessor, Queen Nefertiti. Archeologist Nicholas Reeves is out to prove that Nefertiti’s remains lie behind a wall in Tut’s burial chamber. She died more than 3,300 years ago and her body has never been found. Apparently, Tut was too young when he died to have built his own tomb, so they put him in an outer compartment of a much more elaborate tomb in which the Queen was buried. Howard Carter achieved worldwide fame when he discovered the “boy king’s” resting place almost a century ago. He had his suspicions about Tut’s “unkingly” tomb as evidenced by a passage in his memoirs. Carter wrote: “The unfamiliar plan of [the] tomb repeatedly caused us to ask ourselves in our perplexity whether it was really a tomb or a Royal Cache.”

Seniors Coming of Age - The Digital Age Seniors are embracing the digital age at a faster pace than you might think. A report by content provider, Limelight, shows that older Americans, including baby boomers and senior citizens, spend more time online than millennials—much more time. The company’s latest annual report on computer usage shows that more than half of the individuals who spend the most time online are those between the ages of 51 and 69. More than half of them use the Internet more than 15 hours a week compared with millennials between the ages of 18 and 33. Only 41% of those whippersnappers spend that much of their leisure time online.

Clickbait Which Country Has the Most Billionaires?

Did you know that dictionaries add hundreds of new words to their lexicons each year?

You might be surprised to know that China has now overtaken the U.S. in the number of billionaires per country. A staggering 242 new Chinese billionaires were made over the past year, pushing the country ahead of America for the first time, according to Hurun Report’s annual China rich list.

Merriam-Webster added 1,700 new words to its pages. The Oxford Dictionary legitimized 1,000 new words. And dictionary.com added 150 new words to its vocabulary.

“Despite the slowdown in the economy, China’s richest have defied gravity, recording their best year ever, and creating more wealth than any country has ever done before in a year,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman of Hurun Report. Perhaps Donald Trump is onto something when he says China is “robbing Americans of billions of dollars of capital and millions of jobs.” China - 596, United States - 537, India - 97, Germany - 93, Russia - 88.

10 | amac.us

Among the words that made the cut are “fleek,” which means well-groomed; “awesomesauce,” a new way to say excellent; and “sapiosexual.” That last one is used to describe men or women who prefer intelligence over physical appearance in their partners. “Clickbait,” of course, means an enticing headline you might come across as you surf the Internet.

The Benefits of Summertime Pregnancies Researchers at Cambridge University have concluded that the best time to have a baby is in the summer. The study of some half a million English men and women shows that they grow up healthier, are heavier at birth and taller as adults. The investigators believe that it has to do with the greater amounts of Vitamin D the embryos have access to in June, July and August as a result of increased amounts of sunshine.

Punky, If You’re a Grandma, and Bumpy, If You’re a Grandpa America’s grandparents are younger than the grandpas and grandmas of yesteryear, and the Census Bureau confirms it, noting that grandmothers these days average 50 years of age and grandfathers have an average age of 54. It’s no wonder, therefore, that some 21st Century grandparents may be opting for new “younger-sounding” monikers for their grandparenthood status. Grandma and Grandpa still top the list of preferred names, according to the Baby Center. But a few unusual names turned up in the Web site’s most recent survey—names such as Panda and Punky for grandma and Bebop and Bumpy for grandpa. - By John Grimaldi

The Pope Kissed Her Brow It’s the kind of Thanksgiving story straight out of a Frank Capra movie. Distraught parents, holding their one-year-old baby girl, braved the vast crowds to get a glimpse of Pope Francis when he visited Philadelphia in September. They hoped for a prayer, at best, but got what they now call a full-blown miracle. The child was suffering from an inoperable brain tumor and her desperate parents sought the intervention of the Pontiff. A papal bodyguard spotted them, took the baby into his arms and presented her to the Pope, himself. The Pope kissed her brow. The moment made the evening news. In August, a brain scan clearly showed the menacing tumor growing inside baby Gianna’s head. An MRI done in mid-November, two months after the papal visit, showed that the tumor had shrunk to such a size that it was almost impossible to detect its presence. “She’s getting better and stronger. She’s blowing kisses.” Gianna’s mom, Kristen Masciantonio, told reporters. If not a miracle, the Pope’s kiss gave Gianna and her family new hope and something very special to celebrate. amac.us | 11

Not getting the sleep you need?

Is your pillow the problem?

On its 10 year anniversary and with over five million satisfied customers, MyPillow® has been selected the Official Pillow of the National Sleep Foundation! How Well Did You Sleep Last Night? Did you toss and turn all night? Did you wake up with a sore neck, head ache, or was your arm asleep? Do you feel like you need a nap even though you slept for eight hours? Just like you, I would wake up in the morning with all of those problems and I couldn’t figure out why. Like many people who have trouble getting a good night’s sleep, my lack of sleep was affecting the quality of my life. I wanted to do something about my sleep problems, but nothing that I tried worked.

Mike Lindell Inventor of MyPillow®

The Pillow Was the Problem I bought every pillow on the market that promised to give me a better night’s sleep. No matter how many pillows I used, I couldn’t find one that worked and finally I decided to invent one myself. I began asking everyone I knew what qualities they’d like to see in their “perfect pillow”, and got many responses: “I’d like a pillow that never goes flat”, “I’d like my pillow to stay cool” and “I’d like a pillow that adjusts to me regardless of my sleep position.” After hearing everyone had the same problems that I did, I spent the next two years of my life inventing MyPillow.

MyPillow® to the Rescue Flash forward ten years and MyPillow, Mike Lindell’s revolutionary pillow design, has helped 5 million people improve the quality of their sleep. MyPillow has received thousands of testimonials about the relief MyPillow has brought to people who suffered from migraines, snoring, fibromyalgia, neck pain and many other common issues. Lindell has been featured on numerous talk shows, including Fox Business News and Imus in the Morning. Lindell and MyPillow have also appeared in feature stories in The New York Times and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. MyPillow has received the coveted “Q Star Award” for Product Concept of the Year from QVC, and has been selected as the Official Pillow of the National Sleep Foundation. MyPillow’s patented technology can help with all of the most common causes of sleep loss and allows you to adjust it to any sleeping position. You can even wash and dry MyPillow as easily as your favorite pair of blue jeans!

“Until I was diagnosed with various sleep issues, I had no idea why my sleep was so interrupted throughout the night. I watch Imus each morning and heard endless testimonials about MyPillow. I took his advice and ordered a MyPillow. Now I wake up rested and ready to conquer the day ahead. Thank you for helping me remember what it’s like to sleep like a baby!” - Jacqueline H.

Unprecedented Guarantee and Warranty I do all of my own manufacturing in my home state of Minnesota and all materials are 100% made in the U.S.A. I’m so confident MyPillow will help you, I’m offering an unprecedented 60-day money back guarantee and a 10-year warranty not to go flat! I truly believe MyPillow is the best pillow in the world and that if everyone had one, they would get better Michael J. Lindell CEO, MyPillow, Inc. sleep and the world would be a much happier place.

Is Starting a Business Right for You?

By Rick Gossett, CPA/MBA

“Should I start my own business?”

T

hat is one of the most frequent questions that I hear from seniors today. In fact, the Kau f f ma n Fou ndat ion repor t s that more than 25 percent of new business owners this past year were between the ages of 55-64, and they had a higher rate of entrepreneurship than any other age group. Whether they’re retired, working part-time, or still going full-time, the world of entrepreneurship and business ownership is beckoning. As you look ahead to a rewarding retirement, consider the benefits of owning a small business.

of abilities and interests. It’s part of what makes this countr y so great: everyone brings something different to the table, and together we build thriving communities and a prosperous nation. Not everyone starts a business for the same reason. There are a variety of factors that lead people into entrepreneurship, and that fact is

Small business owners come from ma ny d i f ferent backgrounds and have a va r iet y

especially true for seniors. It’s never too late to reinvent yourself, and senior entrepreneurs across the country have found the inspiration to set off on new adventures.

The 3 Reasons Seniors Start Businesses 14 | amac.us

Generally speaking, there are three basic reasons that seniors start businesses, and you probably know people who fit into each of these three categories. First, many people find that they are bored with a life of retirement, and worry about letting their hardearned skills and abilities atrophy. My friend Robert in Arizona spent his career working as an engineer, participating in big projects across the country. After he had been retired for a few years, we talked about how he missed being a part of that world. He decided to team up with another retired engineer and open up shop as engineering consultants. For the past 2 years he’s enjoyed continuing to work in his field, but on his own terms and on the projects that interest him. It’s a great way for him to use those skills and stay active, while maintaining the flexibility to do the things he dreamed of doing in retirement. A second reason seniors star t businesses is because, unfortunately, they are running out of money. Financial problems cause stress and unhappiness, and lead many to seek business opportunities to supplement their income. Susan is a former classmate of mine living in Massachusetts. She was working part-time as an administrative assistant when she and her husband realized that their savings and retirement income would not be

enough to last through a thirty year retirement. She worked hard to get her real estate license and began supplementing the family income. It took a couple years, but she’s been able to leave her part-time job and focus on her own business. The financial future looks much brighter. A third reason seniors pursue small business ownership is to experience the rewards of helping others. Business is all about meeting needs and solving problems for people. Above and beyond any financial rewards, there is something deeply fulfilling about delivering products and services that help other people. My former colleague Gary worked as a middle manager for a Fortune 100 company for years. He retired comfortably near his family in Iowa, but still felt driven to do something that made a difference and helped people. He started a nonprof it that promotes adult education in his community, and it has been a great success. He’s made a difference, and he’s experienced more personal satisfaction than anything he’s ever done.

Deciding to “Go For It” If any (or all) of those sound like you, you just might need to c on s ide r s t a r t i n g a busi ness. W het her you’re looking for a way to keep your skills sharp, financial independence, or a deeper purpose, business ownership has a lot to offer. And it doesn’t require a huge investment. There are many ways to put your skills and knowledge to good use without breaking the bank and without abandoning the family time and leisure pursuits that made retirement attractive in

the first place. Ta k e t i m e to inventor y your skills and match them with a list of activities that you enjoy. There will be several “matches”—these are best bets for you to pursue. You can start at a modest level. Little bets make far more sense than betting the ranch.

Where Should You Begin? We k now t hat t he idea of starting a small business can be intimidating. Even when you have an idea for what you want to do, there’s a big difference between doing a job and running a business, and small business owners have to do both. Traditionally, aspiring small business owners have turned to bookstores or local adv isors for help—a nd usua l ly without knowing what to ask. But one of the great t hings about our modern age is the way that tech nolog y makes it easier than ever to make connections w it h people a nd get t he k nowledge you need about any given topic. For would-be business owners, the Tarkenton Certificate in Entrepreneurship is the ideal resource. The certificate program was created by NFL Ha ll of Famer and veteran business owner

Fran Ta r k e n t o n i n pa r t nersh ip with the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. It requires roughly 100 hours of commitment, combining videobased instruction with practical exercises and validation that you’ve mastered each section. People with first-hand experience at building businesses walk you through every step of the business process, from brainstorming an idea to creating a business plan to going out and making sales, and everything in between. Fighting for Your COLA By Parker Erickson

I

n October 2015, t he Social Security Administration (SSA) made a quiet announcement affecting over 70 million Americans. For the third time in 40 years, Social Security recipients and veterans wou ld not be receiv i ng t hei r annual, guaranteed, Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) in fiscal year (FY) 2016. Why, you might ask, was there no COLA entering FY16? The answer: falling gas prices. While many consumers welcomed relief at the pump, senior citizens and veterans remain largely unaffected by the fall in energy costs. A Cost-of-Living Adjustment, a term coined by the SSA, is a complicated, intricate calculation that takes into account several different factors. In order to calculate a COLA for Social Security recipients and veterans, the SSA uses a metric called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Energy prices, particularly gas prices, play a significant role in the calculation of inflation and the rising cost of goods. Although gas prices fell significantly in 2015, housing, food, and healthcare costs—goods that largely affect senior citizens’ wallets—have continued to go up. Consider this: since the year 2000,

18 amac.us | amac.us | 18

housing costs have risen 44%, eggs have gone up 117%, and healthcare premiums continue to reach all-time highs. Meanwhile, Social Security recipients, having been denied a COLA twice in the last 16 years, average just 2.2% in their annual COLA increase. The math doesn’t add up, and senior citizens are paying for it. AM AC’s president, Dan Weber, upon hearing from SSA there would be no COLA for FY16, immediately began taking action. After a series of meetings on the Hill in mid-October, several members of Congress began making moves to help rectify this problem. Cong ressma n Fra n k Guinta (NH-01) and Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09) teamed up with AMAC to create H.R. 4140, the Saving the Earnings and Noting the Investment of Our Retired Seniors Act of 2015, or the SENIORS Act of 2015. This act would ensure that all veterans and Social Security recipients receive a 1% COLA for FY16. Unlike other bills introduced in Congress meant to provide a COLA for senior citizens and veterans, H.R. 4140 is the only bipartisan solution that seeks to guarantee a COLA to Social Security recipients while at the same time make fiscally responsible offsets to reduce new spending.

With a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) price tag estimate between $9 and $11 billion for the 1% COLA payment, the SENIORS Act of 2015 responsibly a llocates f unds to seniors while trimming wasteful and unnecessary government spending. The bipartisan nature of this bill, and the leadership imbued by its authors, stands as a stark example of fiscal responsibility and government responsiveness to a crisis facing millions of seniors. AMAC pushed hard before the end of the session to get H.R. 4140 attached to larger legislation and gather support. R e p r e s e nt a t i v e s G u i n t a a nd Sinema worked tirelessly to have the SENIORS Act included in the Omnibus. Unfortunately, despite all our best efforts, the bill did not make it. Over the course of the next few months, AMAC will be back on the Hill gathering cosponsors and pushing for support of H.R. 4140. Congressman Guinta has made it clear that the fight is not over, and that he and AMAC will be pushing for a retroactive COLA to help today’s struggling senior citizens. The fight for a COLA is long from over!

Cool Technology How Boomers Can Help Their Parents By Gerry Hafer

R

ecent reports by the U.S. Census Bureau project that the percentage of Americans age 65 and over will grow by nearly 40% between now and 2030, reaching a level of 20% of the total population. That projection might not be too startling, given the media coverage in the past few years concerning the “Baby Boom” generation and the graying of America. But what may surprise you is that studies have

shown that 90% of Americans age 65 and older have a clear preference to “age in place,” meaning staying in their own homes rather than moving to assisted living facilities. In fact, the overwhelming majority of seniors believe they will remain in their own homes for the rest of their lives. While that very clear preference is appealing to so many seniors, t heir families recog nize t hat it pr e s ent s s ome substantial challenges. The independence is a noble objective, so long as it’s understood that the need for help and support will grow right along with the age. As we grow old, we find that common tasks become more and more difficult, and we recognize that declining cognitive abilities can present hurdles for independent living. But don’t despair - here’s where technology can ma ke a dif ference. In recent years, the technology marketplace has recognized t he demographics of an aging population, and has made substantial st rides in t he development of devices and systems aimed at

22 | amac.us

helping older Americans agein-place. For example, where home monitoring systems prev iously focused on ly on the security of physical property, the marketplace now offers systems that watch over individuals in the home, tracking and reporting on their movements a rou nd t he clock . L i kew ise, devices are now available that can turn off stoves automatically, or dispense medications according to a schedule. According to Tracy Zitzelberger, Administrative Director of the Oregon Center for Aging & Technology, “There’s a tremendous demand for technological tools to help caregiving, particularly as baby boomers deal with elderly parents who may be living across the country.”i Both high- and low-tech solutions are available in the technolog y marketplace to facilitate those pursuing an aging-in-place living strategy. Some can be elaborate, for example involving installation of sensors around the living area linked into a 24x7 monitoring service that can provide minute-by-minute web-based activity and movement reports to designated caregivers, while others can be as simple as LED lighting to guide movement in dark areas, or programmable/lockable pill boxes with audio alarms that signal when it’s time to take a pill. Shoes with built-in tracking devices are another relatively low-cost

approach to tracking the movement of cognitively impaired seniors. Here are a few examples of specific devices available in the technology marketplaces that are becoming more commonplace in today’s world: • BeClose, an innovat ive a g i n g in-place technolog y t hat helps seniors, families, and caregivers stay in touch. Usi ng d iscreet w i reles s sen sor s placed in t he home, BeClose tracks an elderly loved one’s daily routine. Caregivers are able to check on them at any time using a private, secure web page. If there are any disruptions, remote caregivers will be alerted by phone, e-mail or text message. Because everything is wireless, the system is easy to set up—just plug in the base station and place the battery operated sensors around the home. There is no need for a second phone line or a broadband connection.ii • TabSafe, a medication management system that reminds, dispenses, alerts, and posts information on compliance, inventory, and other health information that is accessible from any internet-capable device. The base unit (for one user) is installed in a convenient location in the home. It is modularly expandable in units of four to accommodate individual needs (a single unit of four can dispense up to 13 medications). The medication is inserted by the pharmacy, homeowner or caregiver into a cartridge (the design allows for one type of medication per cartridge

or multiple medications using an optional multidose cartridge). A patented design allows one tablet or dose of more than one to be released at a time. A memory chip embedded in each TabSafe cartridge allows the pharmacist to interface and enter each customer’s medication information at the same time that a label is generated. The TabSafe Personal Health Website is a database of information about the medication supplied to each individual TabSafe unit—the status of each cartridge (which medication it contains, the quantity remaining, schedule times and expiration dates), detailed prescription data and compliance records. It a lso coord i nates reordering. All information is HIPAA compliant and inaccessible to anyone without log-in access.iii • Tablets and iPads that offer oppor t u n it ies for sen iors to participate in games to promote brain fitness, as well as apps that track health information, all of which can have a variety of positive impacts on seniors’ lives. Seniors can view photos, listen to music, read, and learn languages, using lightweight devices with easyto-use touch screens and adjustable font sizes. Game units like Nintendo Wii also can provide aerobic exercise regimens that produce physical benefits. These are the types of low-cost technology items that can help seniors stay mentally and socially engaged. A nd, of course, don’t forget the smartphone! These devices are not only commonplace, but lately have become quite seniorfriendly through the addition of larger buttons, photo-

based speed dialing, and improved voice recognition capabilities. An even more meaningful feature of the smartphone is the inclusion of GPS technology, which makes immediate location of a senior possible. Studies have shown that over half of America’s seniors are using the internet and cell phones, so the adoption of technology within the home specifically to assist seniors aging in place is no longer the hurdle of, say, a generation ago. We’re rapidly approaching the age of the tech-savvy senior, a movement that bodes well for the independent living objectives of an aging population.

How to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes Tips Presented By

F

rozen pipes can present an invisible threat – one that you might not recognize until the weather starts to warm. By then, the water damage can be significant and costly. Fortunately, keeping your home warmer, at a consistent temperature, and better insulated can help protect your pipes from freezing this winter.

Which Pipes Are Most at Risk? Pipes that are most exposed to the elements, including those outdoors and along the exterior walls of your home, may need extra protection during winter months. These include the following: • Outdoor hose hookups and faucets. • Swimming pool supply lines. • Lawn sprinkler lines. • Water pipes in unheated, interior locations such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages and kitchen and bathroom cabinets. • Pipes running against exterior walls with little or no insulation.

26 | amac.us

How to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes During Winter • C l o s e i n s i d e va l ve s supplying water to outdoor faucets and hookups. • Open outdoor faucets to allow residual water to drain; be sure to keep them open during the cold weather months, while the water supply is turned off. • Keep garage doors closed to help protect water pipes located in the garage. • Open the doors on cabinets where plumbing is located. This can help allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes. • For pipes that are at risk of freezing (both hot and cold water pipes), let water drip from faucets. • Keep the heat in your home set at a minimum of 55 degrees.

Why is a Frozen Pipe a Concern? W hen water begins to freeze, it expands. This can cause both plastic and metal pipes to burst, possibly leading to significant water damage to your home.

• Since water expands when it freezes, it puts unwanted pressure on pipes. • As water freezes, the force exerted from the expansion can cause a pipe to burst, regardless of the strength of the material. • You may not know you have a burst pipe as the water has turned to ice. Once the temperature starts to warm and thawing begins, leaking and flooding can occur.

What Do You Do if You Have a Frozen Pipe? If you have a leak, turn the water off immediately to prevent water damage and call a licensed plumber to make repairs. If your home is heated by an older steam heating system, consult with your heating professional to determine if it is safe to continue to run the heating system with the water supply turned off for your particular heating system. The Growing Welfare State By Gerry Hafer

W

e hear about it all the time—the national debt, uncontrolled government spending, the cost of social welfare programs, and so on. You know-the facts, figures, and commentary that keep hard-working Americans awake at night. We hear more and more about America’s shift toward socialism and the growing welfare state, and it bothers many of us. For the past few years, not much of the news in the area of governmental financing has been positive, and especially over recent months as the 2016 presidential campaigns have been heating up. While it’s lately been taking a back seat to immigration and terrorism, the issue of welfare spending is continuing to gnaw away at the psyche of Americans. For many, it’s a vague and uneasy feeling that people have had for a long time, and it manifests itself

Sustainable?

as a simple question: How long can this continue?

The Welfare State Defined Before we get into how spending on government benefits is evolving, let’s take a step sideways and define the term “welfare state.” MerriamWebster defines the term as “a social system based on the assumption by a political state of primar y responsibility for the individual and social welfare of its citizens.” In the U.S., this concept was embraced in Colonial Days, when the British Poor Laws were adopted to serve the needs of those legitimately unable to support their needs. Through the early years, this mindset was arguably successful, but by the end of the nineteenth century it was evident that

$ 28 | amac.us

some degree of reform was necessary to better manage t he way t he government dealt with the poor. In the midst of the Great Depression, with an estimated one-fourth of the population unemployed, the need for governmental intervention became crucial to the well-being of citizens, and welfare as we know it today had its start. This intervention spawned a collection of government agencies (Dept. of Healt h and Human Services, Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, Dept. of Labor and Dept. of Agriculture are examples) to operate the social welfare programs. So, in understanding the “welfare state,” t here are t wo pr imar y expenditure points that need to be considered. First, the cost of the social support programs themselves; and second, the overhead costs of the agencies created to dispense the funds. Together, these two categories form the basis for a redistribution of revenue from taxpayers to social support recipients, an aggregate amount that is measured in the trillions of dollars.

Getting a Handle on Where We Are The question isn’t whether or not we’re becoming a welfare state (we’re already there), the real question is whether there’s a tipping point at which the cost of a welfare state becomes completely unsustainable

in a free market economy. According to the Census Bureau, there are nearly 110 million people in our country living in households that receive some form of means-tested welfare from the federal government. That’s more than a third of the total population! While that number alone is shocking, when contrasted to the number of full-time workers in America you get a real feel for the issue. The Census Bureau also reports that full-time workers numbered roughly 102 million, meaning the American economy has reached the point where a single full-time worker is providing the revenue to support 1.1 people currently on welfare. To put an even finer point on the sustainability question, a deeper look i nto t he Census Bu reau numbers shows us that a full 16% of those counted as full-time workers are government employees, many of whom presumably are involved in the administration of the programs comprising the welfare state. This view changes the welfare recipient/ full-time worker ratio to almost 1.3to-1.

Means-tested Welfare Programs So what’s included in this category c a l led “mea n s-tested wel fa re programs”? First, let’s be clear that the term does not include Social Security, unemployment insurance, workers compensation, or veterans’ benefits. The benefits paid out by these programs are not “meanstested” but are considered to be earned benefits for which eligibility has been warranted, primarily through payment of taxes. “Meanstested” programs are those that are “government programs that

Means-tested Welfare Program Categories Heritage Foundat ion Senior Research Fellow Robert Rector defined the means-tested welfare system as comprising “69 federal programs providing cash, food, housing, medical care, social

= Americans provide assistance deliberately and exclusively to poor and lower-income people.”i See sidebar on the Meanstested Welfare Program Categories. The actual number of individual “means-tested welfare programs” is not necessarily the issue; the amount of dollars redistributed in support of them is the real issue. In his remarks to the Ways and Means Committee four years ago, Rober t Rector characterized welfare spending as “the fastest-growing component of government spending, outstripping the combined growth of Medicare and Social Security spending, as well as the growth in education and defense spending. Over the 20-year period between FY 1989 and FY 2008, total means-tested spending increased by 292 percent.” In fact, a recent report by the Heritage Foundation summarizing the 50-year anniversary of the Lyndon Johnson30 | amac.us

proclaimed “War on Poverty” notes that in this 50-year period, “U.S. ta xpayers have spent over $22 trillion on anti-poverty programs,” a figure which (adjusted for inflation) “is three times the cost of all U.S. military wars since the American Revolution.”iii Despite this level of spending, the Census Bureau reports that there has been essentially no net reduction in poverty levels since the mid-1960s.

The Sustainability Issue The original premise of this article was the question, “How long can this continue?” In other words, how long can the U.S. economy continue to fund the welfare state through the industriousness of a declining base of taxpaying workers? The growing number of people on welfare, when contrasted to a steadily declining base of workers presages a long-term problem since economists typically

attribute economic growth to more people entering t he work force than leaving it. With birth rates continuing to trend downward, and life expectancies trending upward, it’s clear that a tipping point could be in our future. How can we work our way out of this situation? Unemployment rates have somewhat stabilized since the 2007 Great Recession, and yet the imbalance between workforce participants and welfare recipients continues to grow. Cato Institute Senior Fellow Michael Tanner nails it with this comment: “A healthy economy cannot realistically depend on an ever-shrinking number of people to produce the wealth that will be distributed to the larger population.” The answer may lie in removing the incentives that have evolved in our continued on page 32

through labor force participation. Reinstatement of programs (like the original provision in the Temporary Assistance for needy Fami lies program) that incentivize the ablebodied to work is another way that governments can promote the selfesteem and financial rewards of labor force participation.

These two examples are indicative of a slowly emerging trend toward intolerance for welfare abuse, and other states are joining in, like Massachusetts, Florida, and Kansas, to name a few. It’s a positive sign that the political climate is beginning to understand the “tipping point” concept, and that strong measures are needed to turn the tide.

[...] the welfare in some states pays more than a $20-an-hour job.

In Maine, where a third of the state is on welfare, 58,000 food stamp enrollees have been removed from the program through elimination of the work waiver. Non-disabled food stamp recipients are now required to work 20 hours per week, volunteer for 24 hours a month, or attend a vocational training class. Refusal to comply with the mandate results in a loss of benefits for a three-year period. Based on the success of this mandate, Maine is also looking at changes to other welfare programs (like TANF and EBT), where similar oppor t u n it ies for sav i ngs a re available.

The f undamenta l arg ument is clear…there needs to be a focus on addressing the conditions through which it pays more to be on welfare than to work. Easier said than done but not unachievable. For example, Wisconsin’s food sta mp benef it s prog ra m (FoodShare) implemented a new law in April of this year stipulating that able-bodied adults without children living at home “must work at least 80 hours a month or look for work to stay in the program.” The result was impressive—about 25% (15,000) of those previously enrolled in the benefits program were dropped in the three months following the new rule’s effective date, with nearly a third of those finding work through a companion job training program.

For example, a recent publication by Investor’s Business Daily reports that “… in most states welfare programs pay more than a minimum-wage job, and in some states government aid can be more than the earnings from an entry-level job.” Cato’s Tanner puts a finer point on this phenomenon by analyzing a hypothetical mix of seven welfare programs available to a family in all 50 states, finding that these programs in 10 states produced a value exceeding $35,000 a year…and pointing out that this value is untaxed, making it even more striking when compared to a comparable wage level. He goes on to report that welfare in some states pays more than a $20-an-hour job.

Ted Cruz?

By Gene Barrett

T

The first in a series of profiles on the 2016 Presidential Candidates

ed Cruz is in an excellent position to become the next P r e s ident of t he Un it e d States. But how much do we really k now about him? Is he that rare person who has the intelligence and compassion to govern our nation in the best way possible? And, does he have the integrity to make the right decisions and the courage to do what he knows is right, especially when facing difficult challenges?

who joined the resistance knew that Castro was a communist.

Let’s take a look at his background to see if we can learn more about this presidential candidate. Since we are all influenced by our families, let’s start by looking at Ted’s.

Being raised by a father who was a freedom fighter, who saw firsthand what it was like to live under an oppressive reg i me, had a g reat impact on a young Ted Cruz and the building of his character.

His father, Rafael Cruz, was born in Cuba. As a student, he watched in horror as military police would beat the opponents of the Cuban dictator, Batista. He joined the resistance movement, started by Fidel Castro, along with many other young people. In the early years, Castro was viewed as a freedom fighter and a hero by people both inside and out of Cuba. Rafael became a guerrilla, throwing Molotov cocktails at the buildings of the Batista regime. Risking arrest and death, he fought against the dictator’s corrupt and evil government. At that time, none of the young men

Cruz’s father decided to f lee Cuba after being threatened by the Batista regime. Rafael applied for admission to the University of Texas. Due to his good grades in high school, he was accepted by the University. He applied for a student visa and, after bribing a Cuban official, was given an exit permit.

Rafael arrived in the U.S. unable to speak the language and with only a $100 bill sewed to his underwear. What followed is a true American success story. Rafael’s first job was washing dishes in an Austin diner ea r n i ng $.50 a n hou r. He later graduated and got a job working for Geocom, a geophysica l data processing company. Soon after, he met Ted’s mother E le a nor Da r r a g h, a w om a n of Irish heritage. She graduated from R ice Universit y w it h a major in mathematics. Ted’s mother began

work with Shell Corporation as a computer programmer, at a time when ver y few computer programmers were women. After marrying Rafael, they formed their own seismic data processing company to help oil companies search for new reserves. While working in Calgary, Alberta, their baby was born on December 22, 1970. Born Rafael Edward Cruz, he was known as Felito. Not wanting to be teased by the other boys, he picked his own nickname, Ted. An introduction to politics began in high school when Ted was twice elected class president. He applied for and was accepted to Princeton University. W hile at Princeton, Ted became interested in debating. He and his friend David Panton won the award for “team of the year” as the top debate team in the countr y. Ted was named “speaker of the year” and David was named the second place winner. Ted dreamed of working as a law clerk at the Supreme Court alongside nine of the most revered judges in the land. Fortunately, he was accepted at Harvard Law School. In 1999, Ted was hired by the George W. Bush presidential campaign. Ted met his wife Heidi while serving as one of the domestic policy advisers during that campaign. Ted Cruz on the Issues • On abortion, Cruz is strongly pro-life and would allow the procedure only when a pregnancy endangers the mother’s life. • Cruz opposes both same-sex marriage and civil unions. He believes that marriage should be legally defined as only between one man and one woman, but believes that the legality of same-sex marriage should be left to each state to decide. • In 2015, Cruz voted in favor of the USA Freedom Act, which reauthorized the USA Patriot Act but reformed some of its provisions. • Cruz is a proponent of school choice and opposes the Common Core State Standards Initiative. • Cruz is a strong critic of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the ACA or “Obamacare”). He has sponsored legislation that would repeal the health care reform law and its amendments in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010. • Cruz is a gun-rights supporter. • Cruz has adopted a hard-line stance on immigration issues during the 2014 border crisis and is an opponent of comprehensive immigration reform. • Cruz opposes the legalization of marijuana, but believes it should be decided at the state level.

In 2011, Ted decided to run for the U.S. Senate. Although he had the support of conservatives such as Senators Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Pat Toomey, Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint, he still had to raise an enormous amount of money to have any chance of winning. With Heidi’s blessing, they cashed in their entire savings and put it into the campaign. It paid off as he won the election after first beating the standing Lieutenant Governor in the primary. As Senator, he broke new ground by going against the tradition that freshman Senators are supposed to meekly go along with the crowd. For example, it has long been a Senate tradition that freshman Senators wait as long as one year before speaking on the floor. Cruz broke that tradition by speaking on the floor after only 90 days as a Senator, in support of Rand Paul’s filibuster against the nomination of John Brennan as CIA Director. He was later chided for that by some other members of the Senate. 40 | amac.us

Cruz said he promised the voters of Texas that he would represent them to the best of his ability and that was the important thing. On September 24, 2013, Cr uz stood before t he Senate with his own filibuster – to defund Obamacare. Senate rules for a filibuster allow a Senator to keep the f loor as long as he or she can. During that time, the Senator may not sit down, lean on a desk, or leave the floor to use the bathroom. With advice from Rand Paul not to drink water, Ted stood on his feet for 21 hours wearing comfortable tennis shoes. The Senators Mike Lee, Pat Roberts, Jeff Sessions, Mike Enzi, Chuck Grassley, and his friend Marco Rubio, asked lengthy questions which allowed Cruz to rest his voice. That filibuster brought attention to Ted Cruz and to the defects in Obamacare. As Cruz and some of the other conservative Senators went against the Republican leadership, a gap began to widen. The leadership was concerned that the media would

crucify Republicans and hurt their chances in the next election, while the conservatives thought they had to do everything in their power to stop reckless spending and reign in excessive government power. That insider battle continues today as Republican conservatives accuse their leadership of constantly giving in, especially on moral issues like funding Planned Parenthood, and getting almost nothing in return. Will Ted Cruz continue his crusade as the “happy warrior?” Is he strong enough to continue to fight for what he believes is right, despite t he political cost? The primary elections will be a good testing ground and ultimately the voters will decide if Ted Cruz wins or loses in the most important case he has ever presented, the case for making Ted Cruz our next president.

Virginia

Old Dominion

Stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, Virginia boasts a long Atlantic coastline. As the oldest of 13 original colonies, reenactments of Colonial and Revolutionary-era life are an important part of its history. Explore Maymont, the former sprawling home of wealthy Richmond residents Major James H. and Sallie Dooley. Upon their deaths, the grounds were left to the city. Visitors may tour the 33-room mansion, the carriage collection, and the Japanese Gardens and estate grounds. Richmond is home of St. John’s Episcopal Church, declared a National Historic Site, where Patrick Henry famously declared, “Give me liberty or give me death.” See where Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington discussed issues and enacted deeds which led to the founding of America.

West Virginia

The Mountain State

West Virginia is located in t he Appalachian region of the Southern United States. The state is prized for its beautiful mountains, rolling hills, rivers and lakes. Hot and humid summers and cold winters are a result of the region’s cont i nenta l cli mate. T he va r iable weather is perfect for year-round outdoor activities. Harpers Ferry is a historic town situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. It is known for John Brown’s raid on the Armory in 1859 and for its role in the American Civil War. Delaware

The First State

Delaware is typically included in the Southern Atlantic category, despite a lack of official boundaries to distinguish which states fit the category. For certain, it possesses a rich colonial and political history. The city of New Castle is home to the Georgian mansion, Amstel House. It was built in 1730 by Dr. John Finney and shares an interesting history, including the attendance of George Washington for a wedding. From Colonial-era towns to beaches, there is an abundance of fun. It is said that Delaware “packs more pleasure-permile than any other state.” Rehoboth Beach is a welcoming seaside destination which sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay. Nearby Dewey Beach offers bountiful watersports; boating, fishing, parasailing, swimming and sun bathing are some favorite activities.

Faith

Are We in the End Times? Our major religions teach that the world as we know it will end, and many people think that may be soon.

But when? By Brother Juniper The majority of Americans identify themselves as Christians, meaning their religion is based on the person and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Nearly all Christians are taught that Jesus Christ will return in glory and reign eternally; however beliefs differ about how this will happen. People of all eras have wondered if the end times would occur during

t hei r l i fet i mes. Jesus Hi msel f declared, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. (Matt. 24:36) Despite that, according to recent polls, four out of ten Americans believe we are presently living in those times. Christians believe that

the end times will herald the return of Jesus Christ, Jews await the coming of the Messiah, and Muslims expect a religious figure known as the Mahdi. Interestingly, Muslims also expect the return of Jesus who will declare Islam as the one true religion, while Christians expect an Antichrist who will fool believers before Christ Jesus returns.

W

h i le t here a re ma ny differing views of what will transpire in the years leading up to the end of our present world, one version that has received popular at tent ion is t he “Lef t Behind” series. Starting in 1965 with the original “Left Behind” book, 16 volumes soon followed with a total of 65 million copies being printed along with four feature films produced on the subject. While the books were works of fiction, they closely followed certain passages of the Bible that pertained to the last days. Pope Francis, two days after the jihadist attacks in Paris, warned Christians to be ready for the end of the world. He mentioned apocalyptic signs such as wars, famine, and cosmic catastrophes. “In those days,” the Pontiff repeated, “the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in heaven will be shaken.” By saying that, he was quoting from the New Testament (Matt. 24:29) and (Mark 13.24.) Those verses were what Jesus said during his preaching. Fascinatingly, Jesus Himself was quoting from an earlier prophecy as written in the Old Testament (Isaiah 13:10). A close reading of the various prophecies reveals a time line of events that will occur prior to the last days and during the beginning of what some describe as the Tribulation. The last book of the Bible is the book of Revelation, written by the apostle John while he was on the Island of Patmos in the Mediterranean Sea. The title is derived from the Greek word apokalypsis, meaning “unveiling” or “revelation.” John’s abstruse imagery has led to a wide variety of Christian interpretations, with many believing that Revelation describes future

events, as communicated to John through prophetic visions. The book of Revelation describes in great detail many visions of what is to transpire, ending in the final judgment and the creation of a new heaven and a new earth. Dr. Dean Haun, a noted Christian Eschatologist (scholar of the end times) explains his understanding of what the Bible teaches us about the Return of Jesus Christ. Dr. Dean Haun shares with us a timeline of events, as he believes it will happen, beginning with the Super Sign. Dr. Haun believes that in addition to many other signs heralding the end times there is one Super Sign, and that Super Sign has already occurred. It is the restoration of Israel. As Dr. Haun says, “Approximately 2,700 years ago, God commanded the prophet Ezekiel to preach in the Valley of the Dry Bones:” “Then he said to me, ‘Son of man…… these bones represent the people of Israel.’ They are saying, ‘We have become old, dry bones - all hope is gone.’ Now give them this message from the Sovereign Lord: O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again. Then I will bring you back to the land of Israel. When this happens, O my people, you will know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel 37:11-13) Even more dramatic, God declared that His scattered people would become a nation in a single day. “‘Who has ever seen or heard of anything as strange as this? Has a nation ever been born in a single day? Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment? But by the time Jerusalem’s birth pains begin, the baby will be born; the nation will come forth. Would I ever bring this

nation to the point of birth and then not deliver it?’ asks the Lord. ‘No! I would never keep this nation from being born,’ says your God” (Isaiah 66:8-9). Israel was reborn in a single day on May 14, 1948. On that day in Tel Aviv, Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel, establishing the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. Since her rebirth, Israel has been accompanied by constant war and conflict with the surrounding Muslim nations. Just as God foretold (Zechariah 12:2-3), Israel has become a “burdensome stone” for the world’s political leaders. The majority of the Islamic countries surrounding Israel have made it clear their primary goal is the destruction of Israel. However, God has made it clear that Israel is here to stay. The prophet Daniel was given great insight into the future of the world, including a glimpse into the last of the last days. But with that revelation also came some specific instructions from heaven: (Dan. 12:4) - “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” The angel told Daniel that the book (containing the understanding of end times) would remain closed until the time of the very end was reached. How would we know it was the time of the end? It would be a time of frequent travel and increased knowledge. Both are certainly marks of our day. You can step on a plane and be across the globe in less than 24 hours. Knowledge is doubling every twelve months and soon will continued on page 52 amac.us | 51

continued from page 51

double every 12 hours. Without question, Dr. Haun believes we are living in the last days and the book of understanding the times of the end has been opened. “Every day, every hour, and at every turn we are seeing the signs of the end times occur at a rapid and exponential rate.

The pace of these events is profound. The convulsion of earthquakes, record hurricanes, and the upheaval of violence filling the whole earth are like mighty trumpets heralding the soon coming King.”

Dr. Haun examines 5 of them: The Rebirth of Israel, The Rapture of the Church, The Revelation of the Antichrist, The Reeling of the Entire World, and The Return of Jesus Christ.

But can we construct a biblical timeline of end-time events?

End Times timeline The Rebirth of Israel There are 67 Scriptures assimilated into 14 prophecies that speak of Israel’s return to her ancient homeland before the time of the end. Israel is not only once again a nation residing in its God-promised land after 1900 years of exile, it has also revived its ancient language. When Jesus returns, the Scriptures say He will touch down on the Mount of Olives and establish His reign from Jerusalem. Just prior to Christ’s glorious return, Israel will host the most horrific conflict in human history – Armageddon! The rebirth of Israel in 1948 set in motion God’s prophetic time clock.

Catholics Believe in the Second Coming? Yes, absolutely! Yet this surprises many non-Catholic Christians and even a few Catholics. But each week at Mass, Catholics proclaim together (in reciting the Creed) that Jesus Christ will “come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.” The Church affirms, with St. Paul, that on that “last day” the “Lord himself will descend from heaven, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first” (1 Thess. 4:16). The Catholic World Report 12/20/12

2

The Rapture of the Church While some dismiss the idea of the rapture or catching away of the Church (believers in Jesus), there is strong Scriptural evidence to support it. Prior to the cataclysmic days of the end, Jesus will step out on the clouds of glory and shout “Come up here!” (Rev. 4:1-2). All Christians - those who accept Christ’s blood atonement for salvation (born-again believers) - will instantly be with Jesus (1 Cor. 15:51-55 and 1 Thess. 4:13-18). Millions of believers (those raptured) will disappear from the planet before the astonished eyes of those left behind. Both those raptured and those who have died in Christ will be taken back to heaven, where Jesus has prepared an eternal place for them (Jn. 14:13). The bema judgment (to give rewards for service to the Lord while on earth) will take place. Crowns will be handed out to God’s family. The marriage supper of the Lamb will occur (Christ’s Bride made ready for the wedding), then the Wedding Feast (Revelation 19:9). Things on planet earth will be gearing up for the great end-time storm. NOTE: There are no existing prophecies to be fulfilled before the rapture of Christ’s Church. That is not to say future prophecies will NOT be fulfilled before the rapture, just that none are given that MUST BE fulfilled before that stunning event.

The Revelation of the AntiChrist After the rapture of the Church, the nations of earth will be in chaos. As Dr. Dean Haun understands it, “The turmoil w ill cause governments to seek to restore civil order and regain governmental and economic equilibrium. Profound shifts of power will likely take place. According to prophecy, one man will step forward to proffer a plan to quell the fears of war in the Middle East (Daniel 9:27). This great world leader will appear to be the shining knight on a white horse (Rev. 6:2). He will have the answer to the looming all-out war in the Middle East. The Antichrist will usher in what is called the Seven Years of Tribulation on earth. “But he will also demand worship from all of the world’s inhabitants (2 Thess. 2 and Revelation 13). This Antichrist, also called the son of perdition, and the man of sin, will cause all to accept his mark or be cut out of the economic system all buying and selling. Everyone who will not worship him will be killed.”

The Return of Jesus Christ I n 19 5 0 w h i le r e a d i n g Revelations, I pondered over this verse describing the Return of Jesus: “Behold, He is coming with the clouds and every eye will see Him…..” Rev 1:7 I couldn’t understand how it would be possible for every eye on earth to be able to see Him coming in the clouds. Until a few years later with satellite communications, I knew it was possible. But how could John have known as he wrote those words 2,000 years ago? - Brother Juniper

The Reeling of the Entire World Through the mid-way point of the Seven Years of Tribulation, the Antichrist will begin the greatest genocide ever to be visited upon the planet. These last three and a half years of the Seven Year Tribulation are often called the time of the Great Tribulation. This Babylonian-type system will all but enslave the entire world. Prophesied in Daniel 2, 7, 9, and 11, as well as in Revelation 13, this end-time regime will bring hell on earth (Rev. 17 and 18). The book of Revelation reveals God will use cosmological, demonic and angelic forces to bring catastrophic judgment on the world. The remaining armies of the world with gather into the Jezreel Valley (Armageddon) where a 200 million man army will do battle (Rev. 9 and 16). God says this about this conflict: “For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land” (Joel 3: 10-2) (Also Rev. 16:16, and Rev. 19: 17-18).

5

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he does judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” (Rev. 19:11-15). The conquering Creator of all things will establish His earthly throne atop Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem. All the nations of the world will come before the Lord Jesus Christ. The millennial reign of Christ will begin, a time during which the false prophet and the beast (Antichrist), the first to be thrown into the lake of fire, will begin to serve their eternal sentences. Satan will be confined in the bottomless pit, and there will be none of his minions to torment and tempt the millennial earth-dwellers. It will be a time much like the times of Eden, with the earth restored to its pristine beauty (Rev. 20:1). Eventually, God will remake the heavens and the earth in preparation for everlasting, ever-growing ecstasy in God’s presence (Rev. 20:16-22: 16).

The Skinny on Organic Milk By Brandon Fernandez

O

ne of the biggest complaints about buying organic is that the food costs more than traditionally grown or raised food. However, if ever there was an organic purchase to splurge on, it may be organic milk. Resea rc h sug gest s t here a re numerous benef its to drink ing organic milk. It contains: • beta-carotene – equal to a serving of Brussels sprouts (our bodies convert it into vitamin A) • 50% more vitamin E than regular milk (helps our immune system in fighting heart disease and cancer) • 60% more omega-3 fatty acids (good for our cardiovascular system) • no hormones It also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fat found naturally

54 | amac.us

in the dairy and meat products of 100% grass-fed animals. This good fat may help fight cancer. Scientists are especially interested in recent studies showing CLA’s ability to si mu lt a neou sly i nc rea se lea n body mass while reducing body fat mass. Unfortunately, a recent US government dairy industry survey reported that only about 20% of cows are allowed access to pasture.

What about Raw? If you live near an organic farm, raw milk may be an option. Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized or homogen i zed. W h i le most state laws have some requirement regarding the sale of pasteurized milk based on the 1924 Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), at least 32 states allow for state statutes to override the ordinance. Supporters of pasteurization, however, caution that raw milk contains harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria,

or E. coli, and may cause foodborne contamination and illness.

UHT Pasteurization Pasteurization, the process that kills harmful bacteria in milk, is another hot topic. Pasteurization exposes milk to temperatures of approximately 150 degrees. Most organic milk, however, is processed using a method called Ultra High Temperature (UHT) in which milk is subjected to temperatures reaching at least 280 degrees for less than 5 seconds. Opponents argue that the high temperature destroys good bacteria and enzymes. Supporters claim the extended shelf-life and lack of refrigeration requirement during transport and storage enable distribution to those in need of food. UHT milk accounts for over 95% of the milk sold in many European countries, including France, Spain, and Belgium. Over 80% of the milk sold in China is also UHT.

The “old guys” in this Coast Guard unit have been part of a special test group for a new, doctor formulated “super-drink” drink that can help restore your youthful energy.

As a veteran himself, Dr. Sebring told me that he “wanted to create an easy to use product that could give our troops more energy, more stamina and better focus while they fight for our country”.

Dr. Sebring has set aside a small number of free sample packs of Patriot Power Greens exclusively for seniors.

This “super-drink” drink, called Patriot Power Greens, has been so effective for many of the older soldiers that it’s made their achy joints, stiff muscles and lack of energy a thing of the past.

Previously, this super-drink was only available to elite military units in the United States, and could not be purchased by the general public.

Joint Pain And Swelling Reduced To Almost Zero! Tony Whelan, a 58 year old who’s been using the drink said, “Within 2 weeks of taking it, the amount of joint pain, swelling and subsequent stiffness was reduced to almost zero! I’m experiencing less fatigue, with a noticeable sense of well being that I enjoyed in my 30’s.”

Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion

To maximize your time with the doctor, make sure you clearly state the reason for the visit, and let the doctor know that you have two or three questions you need to discuss. If you are seeing the doctor because you are sick, make sure to be precise in describing how you feel; I have a pain in my lower back, I have a fever and my throat hurts, etc.

Empowering Ways to Cure Bad Spending Habits From GimmeInfo.com

S

pending can be fun at first, but it often does more harm than good. Our desire for material things can add up to unnecessary clutter. Moreover, wasteful spending can harm our credit and ruin relationships; leading to arguments, f inancial instabilit y, and deep feelings of guilt. The New Year is an inspiring time to change. Start fresh in 2016 with these undeniably great ways to cure bad spending habits.

Reflect Why do I overspend? Perhaps you grew up poor as a kid and feel the need to make up for it as an adult by spending. Our advice is to come

to terms with the past and don’t let it have any bearing on your future. The past is no excuse for reckless spending. Take all of the negative energy and use it to form new saving habits for 2016.

Quit Feeling Pressured We buy into the idea (pun intended) that if we don’t get it now, we’ll lose. Recently, a television commercial aired which said t hat if you didn’t buy the makeup before midnight, the discounted price would vanish. Cinderella tactics like this are employed by companies who want us to hurry up and buy. They don’t care about you or me. They just want our money. Seldom do we lose out if we wait to buy something. To drive the point home, the very same commercial ran the following night and for weeks after. The deal apparently did not vanish or turn into a pumpkin.

Stop Using Credit Credit cards are convenient. When

we swipe our cards from store to store, it makes for easy transactions. However, it also becomes easy to lose track of what we’re spending. The main problem w it h using credit cards is that we are buying things with money we do not have. Here’s the reality; if we don’t have the money to pay for it now, we are essentially snowballing our debt by overextending ourselves. Quit using credit cards if you are unable to completely pay off the balance each month. This is a big step to becoming money-wise.

Take Inventory How ma ny t i mes do we buy something, only to realize that we already own it or have something similar? In early autumn, I went shopping w it h a f riend and I purchased a brand new sweater and wore it the very next day. A week later I pulled my winter wardrobe out of storage and discovered I owned a nearly identical sweater. Had I taken inventor y before I went clothes shopping, I could have saved myself the unnecessary expense of buying a duplicate item.

Understand Your Emotions Never shop when you’re angry or upset. W hy? Because emotions make us vulnerable to wasteful spending. A good friend of mine continued on page 68

Outrage Over Survival Food Demand surges for breakthrough 25-year survival food as smart seniors stock up.

W

e’ve never seen anything like it before. Right now, our truckers can barely keep up with the rapidly rising demand. We have even been getting reports that this food is actually sold out in many parts of the country – and it might stay that way for a while.

What the heck is going on?

We were determined to figure out why so much survival food has been disappearing… and where it was going. So we did some digging around on our own and it paid off. Wait until you see what we found out. It caught us totally by surprise because it involves a well-known agency that is responsible for aiding Americans in times of crisis. The possibility that they could have something to do with a potential survival food shortage made no sense to us … unless they knew something we didn’t. We were determined to discover the truth for ourselves – and for you. Now, it was impossible to say precisely what these people were up to, but we knew they must be planning for something really big – something really out of the ordinary.

We have the proof in writing!

Just as we were beginning our investigation, our warehouse manager was shocked to receive a request from an official of that very same agency.

They wanted to know:

• How much survival food did we have on hand? • How quickly we can produce more? • Where is inventory kept? • Just how fast could they get their hands on it? We don’t know about you, but any time outsiders starts prying into the affairs of private businesses like ours, we can’t help but get concerned – and frankly, we are. After all, here’s an agency we never heard from before suddenly asking questions about foods intended solely for emergency use in a disaster. Certainly makes you think, doesn’t it? Well, we have a few questions of our own. We’d like someone to tell us exactly what is going on here. Is there really a catastrophe waiting in the wings? Has terrorist activity been discovered in the U.S.? Is the nation’s food supply threatened?

Know what we heard?

It’s like talking to a wall. But we’re going to keep the pressure on until we get some believable information. The truth is, revealing a plot like this could land us in some serious hot water. There’s a reason they’re not going public with any details. But we are absolutely convinced they are up to something. And we think you and every other American really deserves an explanation.

Smart seniors are stocking up on 25-year survival food.

Listen, we all know most people will be woefully unprepared when disaster strikes. The smart among us prefer to take steps to ensure that in a crisis, we won’t be

relying on someone else to take care of our families. That’s our job. Anyone not taking action will find themselves in the same boat as millions of other brainwashed souls who go through life thinking everything is fine. Until one day it is definitely not fine and they are OUT OF LUCK...and in big trouble!

Go to GETFOOD65.COM right now.

We just posted a free video presentation that exposes the truth. You can view it right now at GETFOOD65.COM. We have to warn you that you’ll probably think what it shows is really disturbing. was going through a rough patch in her marriage. She went shopping and bought seven pairs of high heel shoes to make herself feel better. It backfired. The shoes did not improve her relationship and the guilt from overspending outlasted her elation with the shoes.

truly save money on something you wish to buy, shop around. Compare from store to store and use stores that price match or take coupons. Learn when and how to negotiate for items.

Ask Yourself This: Can I Live Without It?

Never go food shopping on an empty stomach. Eat before you go. Move through the store methodically and stick to your list. Be quick and efficient. If possible, allow yourself to pick up one small “extra” item on the trip as a reward for not straying from the list.

Many times we are convinced that we need something, when in fact we only want it. Learn to differentiate. You need a roof over your head, food and water, health and hygiene products, and a minimal amount of clothing. Fancy clothes, jewelry, electronics, a new sports car and knick-knacks are examples of wants. Overspending on the “wants” is where most people go wrong.

Shop With Someone Thrifty It’s true that shoppers can feed off of each other, creating more momentum to buy. In fact, some people get high off of spending. Unfortunately, the euphoric feeling is only temporary. Eventually, reality comes crashing down when the bills come rolling in. Do yourself a favor, don’t shop with a spender. Instead, ask a frugal friend to go along with you. Use them as a role model. Learn to adapt to their way of thinking. Keep a calm and sensible demeanor when shopping and carefully analyze every purchase.

Don’t Buy Into Sales Just because something’s on sale doesn’t mean it’s a bargain. My cousin bought a television. She was so proud of the price she paid, until her neighbor pointed out that she got the same television for less money after negotiating the price down. To 68| amac.us

Don’t Shop Hungry

Include Your Significant Other If you and your spouse or partner share money responsibilities, agree to include each other on major purchase decisions. Big buys such as acquiring a car, boat, camper, new furniture or a vacation package should be joint ventures. Typically, one partner is more frugal than another. The couple can balance out spending tendencies by making i mpor ta nt pu rchase decisions together on the larger items.

Review Expenses Take a look at where your money is going. Money tight? Eliminate wasteful spending by cutting back on unnecessary expenses. Examine habits. Do you go to the movies twice a month? Cut it back to once a month instead. Buy coffee from an expensive shop? Make coffee at home and carry it in a travel mug.

Don’t Buy to Impress We’ve all heard stories about people

trying to keep up with the Joneses. Where does it lead you? On the road to debt. In America, the economic ladder varies w idely. Persona l spending habits should reflect the rung of the ladder where you are, and not the rung of your neighbor. The Bible’s tenth commandment states that we should not envy our neighbor’s possessions. From 1 Timothy 6:6-11 “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from their faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.”

Travel Abroad

London By Addie M. Iaia

L

ondon is one of the most vibrant cities of the world, d raw i ng g loba l v i sitor s. England’s capital city offers great appeal for all interest levels. Those who enjoy sight-seeing, histor y, sports, theatre, literature, museums, shopping, dining or relaxing should give London travel high priority. British Airways did a survey in which U.S. travelers responded that they “love Britain and everything about it.” Although notorious for rainy bouts of weather, London experiences many sunny days as well. People tempted to carry umbrellas should expect the sun to come out shortly after a rainfall. British accents please the ears of many travelers. The polite attitude of the people, from city to countryside, makes Americans feel quite at home. Adding to the charm are the popular and historic attractions, which are each unique. A well-planned trip to London must include a trip to the Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament. See Big Ben, the dramatic Great Bell clock at the north end of the Palace. For fun, visit Madame Tussauds, a famous wax museum. No trip is complete

without a ride on the London Eye, a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames River. From the height of the structure, one is offered panoramic views of the city. The famous Tower of London and Buck ingham Pa lace are t ravel worthy destinations. The Gherkin, also known as 30 St. Mary Axe, is a 41-story skyscraper built in 2004 serving as the financial center of London. The majestic St. Paul’s Cathedral is said to be only eclipsed by the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. London is known for its historic town squares. Most prominent is Trafalgar Square, named after the Battle of Trafalgar where the English f leet defeated the French. Also notable is Piccadilly Circus, one of the city’s busiest squares best known for its billboard advertisements and the Eros Statue. Equally important are its worldrenow ned museums, including The National Gallery which houses one of the greatest collections of paintings. The Science Museum, Nat ional Histor y Museum and British museum are free, with special exhibits available. Walking tours and double-decker red

bus tours are popular ways to see the global city. Additionally, enjoy a slow and relaxing sightseeing boat tour on the Thames River, or along the Regent’s Canal of London starting at Little Venice. London has many open greens and breathtaking parks. In the heart of the city, St. James and Hyde Parks are ideal spaces for watching the London hustle-and-bustle or relaxing in the middle of it all. Bibliophiles may walk in the footsteps of the world’s greatest authors, including William Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Charles Dickens and more. Many of the homes of these great literary geniuses can be toured. London’s pubs and restaurants stand out for their convivial and timeless atmospheres. Look for those offering a quintessential English experience and a plate of wholesome food, including steak and ale pies, fish and chips, shepherd’s pies, and bangers and mash. For those who wish to take part in the action, the markets of London are the best places to try new foods and people watch. From the world renowned department store Harrods of London to the major f lagship stores on Oxford Street, the shopping is second to none. To some, sunglasses are a fashion accessory…

But When Driving, These Sunglasses May Save Your Life!

Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that most (74%) of the crashes occurred on clear, sunny days

Drivers’ Alert: Driving in fall and winter can expose you to the most dangerous glare… do you know how to protect yourself?

I

n the fall and winter, the sun is lower in the sky so it rises and sets at peak travel periods. During the early morning and afternoon rush hours many drivers find themselves temporarily blinded while driving directly into the glare of the sun. Deadly accidents are regularly caused by such blinding glare with danger arising from reflected light off another vehicle or snowy and icy pavement. Yet, motorists struggle on despite being blinded by the sun’s glare that can cause countless accidents every year. Not all sunglasses are created equal. Protecting your eyes is serious business. With all the fancy fashion frames out there it can be easy to overlook what really matters––the lenses. So we did our research and looked to the very best in optic innovation and technology. Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist. A NASA rocket scientist. Some ordinary sunglasses can obscure your vision by exposing your eyes to harmful UV rays, blue light, and reflective glare. They can also darken useful vision-enhancing light. But now, independent research conducted by scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought forth ground- breaking technology to help protect human eyesight from the harmful effects of solar radiation light. This supe-

rior lens technology was first discovered when NASA scientists looked to nature for a means to superior eye protection—specifically, by studying the eyes of eagles, known for their extreme visual acuity. Health

You CAN Improve Your Health and Well-Being in 2016 By Dariann Sellitti

I

f you think about it, the most important part of your health is actually your mental health. Without it, you don’t have the drive or energy to make changes to your physical or emotional health. From the World Health Organization to the British Medical Journal, the top global health organizations cite numerous studies that show that those with poor mental health are in danger of higher risk of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and stroke.

How can YOU develop strong mental health? Factors such as the ability to form strong and healthy relationships top the list. A healthy relationship is one

76 | amac.us

free from violence and one where you can safely express and display emotions and opinions without fear of rejection. Healthy relationships bode well for how you interact with people and have been shown to be a key factor in allowing people to reach their career goals. A healthy diet and physical fitness are also big on the list of helping to improve your overall mental health. Your brain requires diverse vitamins and nutrients to keep you at optimal mental health so including many aspects of the Mediterranean Diet is a great choice in the New Year. This diet consists of fish, vegetables, fruits, olive oil, eggs, and nuts. And it also allows for moderate amounts of wine or other fermented beverages. But don’t assume this means bland,

as vegetables and f ish sautéed in olive oil and spices make for a delicious meal. Aim for 5 fruits and veggies a day. Exercise is also a must for exceptional mental health. Make it a goal to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Even if you have a desk job, simply walking in place as you talk on the phone can help you reach your daily goal. Finally, sleep always helps. Having trouble catching those z’s? Making these changes to your night-time ritual will help. Try eliminating caffeine and alcohol. Make sure to take a warm bath or shower, and do a quiet and enjoyable activity such as deep breathing, reading a book, or journaling. A dark and cooler room (below 69 degrees) is optimal for the

best chance of a good night’s sleep. If you find you have trouble falling or staying asleep in a totally quiet room, try adding white noise (there are several inexpensive machines on the market, as well as apps for your smart phone). Consider taking up a hobby, or learning something new. Studies have shown that people who learn new things are the happiest and most fulfilled. This could also include volunteering or helping others. One of the greatest mental health boosts occur when we offer our services to others.

Avoid these mental health killers! Sugar is one of the worst contributors to very poor mental health. It can cause or exacerbate illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, anxiety, and depression. Try one week without any added sugar and see how much better you look and feel. Stress is another mental health assassin. Take a stress inventory by writing down the biggest stressors in your life such as work, school, health, etc. Then, think of a few ways to reduce or eliminate the stress. If work

is at the top of the list, check to see if your employer offers an Employee Assistance Plan with confidential life counseling. But make sure you are not the cause of the stress. For instance, are you stressed about work because you have been getting there late? Try laying out your clothes the night before, including shoes and accessories. Make sure your purse or wallet, keys and jacket are kept in a consistent place. Pack your lunch the night before and wake up ten minutes earlier if needed. Social media excess is an emerging mental health disaster. Studies have shown that not only does it cause physical problems, such as neck and shoulder pain, but it a lso causes people to feel i n fer ior a nd make poor social choices. W hen you think others have it all together, you may try to keep up with the Joneses and make unnecessary purchases, which add more stress when you can’t pay your bills.

Other causes of mental health issues are chronic illness, post-traumatic stress, and other serious health issues. Never be afraid to get help. If you are not happy with the outcome, find another doctor or clinician. If you need help in finding a health advocate, ask a trusted relative or friend to help.

Do ONE thing every day to boost your mental health! Every day, decide on one thing that you will focus on to make you a better you. Whether it is walking, volunteering at a soup kitchen, cleaning out a junk drawer, or eating one healthy meal, YOU are the only one who can make a direct positive difference in your life today!

Affordable New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors Delivers Crystal - Clear Natural Sound Reported by J. Page

Chicago: Board-certified Ear, Nose, and Throat physician Dr. S. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical-grade, ALL-DIGITAL, affordable hearing aid. This new digital hearing aid is packed with all the features of $3,500 competitors at a mere fraction of the cost. Now, most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear natural sound — in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind — without suffering through “whistling” and annoying background noise.

After years of extensive research, Dr. Cherukuri has created a state-of-the-art digital hearing aid that’s packed with the features of those expensive $3,500 competitors – at a fraction of the price.

Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors This sleek, lightweight, fully programmed hearing aid is the outgrowth of the digital revolution that is changing our world. While demand for “all things digital” caused most prices to plunge (consider DVD players and computers, which originally sold for thousands of dollars and today can be purchased at a fraction of that price), yet the cost of a digital medical hearing aid remains out of reach. Dr. Cherukuri knew that many of his patients would benefit but couldn’t afford the expense of these new digital hearing aids. Generally they are not covered by Medicare and most private health insurance policies. The doctor evaluated all the high-priced digital hearing aids on the market, broke them down to their base components, and then created his own affordable version — called the MDHearingAid AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance.

 Nearly invisible  Crystal-clear natural sound  No suffering with ‘whistling’ or background noise  Outperforms $3,500 models  Amazing low price

Affordable Digital Technology Using advanced digital technology, the MDHearingAid AIR automatically adjusts to your listening environment — prioritizing speech and de-emphasizing background noise. Experience all of the sounds you’ve been missing at a price you can afford. This doctor designed and approved hearing aid comes with a full year’s supply of long-life batteries. It delivers crisp, clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear domes are so comfortable you won’t realize you’re wearing them.

Try it Yourself at Home with a 45-Day Risk-Free Trial Of course, hearing is believing and we invite you to try it for yourself with our RISK-FREE 45-Day home trial. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return it within that time period for a full refund of your purchase price.
