# Publisher’s Letter

Dear AMAC members,

T

hanks to you Patriotic Americans, AMAC continues to grow! We are nearing 200,000 members and our goal is to have one million members by the 2012 elections.

AMAC’s influence

with our political leaders is also building. As we

serve our members by fighting to remove the double tax on Social

Security income that one out of three recipients

must pay

4 | www.amac.us

AMAC’s influence with our political leaders is also building. As we serve our members by fighting to remove the double tax on Social Security income that one out of three recipients must pay, we are grateful to the staff of Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) who asked us to provide them with information about our plan to repeal that grossly unfair tax. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) has had the courage to offer a proposed bill to help keep Social Security solvent. Her staff reached out to us when they heard about AMAC’s plan to couple her bill with a bill that would allow workers to have a tax deductible Social Security IRA to add money to their retirement. Go to our website atwww.amac.us to follow our progress. This issue of your magazine is packed with articles we hope you will find helpful. In this issue you’ll learn more about Herman Cain, a relatively unknown person running for President, and you'll also read about Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, a great vacation spot. You’ll find an introduction to a new book by Jedediah Bila, AMAC’s favorite writer, and of course, some food ideas from Kathie’s Kitchen. On a more serious note: Recently we were reminded that power is fleeting. Like New York’s former Governor, Elliott Spitzer, who had to resign after he was caught having relations with a prostitute, now Anthony Weiner has quickly gone from being an outspoken, powerful Congressman to yesterday’s news. It has been said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Is it any wonder that politicians fall victim? What protects our country from total corruption that grips so many other countries? Consider what Ben Franklin wrote in 1784 about how America won the Revolutionary War: "….if it had not been for the justice of our cause and the consequent interposition of Providence, in which we had faith, we must have been ruined. If I had ever been an atheist, I should now have been convinced of the being and government of Deity! It is he who abases the proud and favors the humble. May we never forget his goodness to us, and may our future conduct manifest our gratitude." Sincerely,

Dan Weber, Publisher

“Sound Off” AMERICANS ARE SPEAKING OUT ON AMAC’S WEBSITE. Some of these comments are presented on this page. Please log on to www.amac.us to give us your views and to read what others are saying!

Jack Lavelle You guys are doing the good work and should be proud. We don’t have to beat AARP in numbers in the short time we’ve been organized. We just need to throw a scare into them so they show their true colors. My wife and I just renewed our memberships for two more years, and I mailed back AARP’s membership card they wanted me to have. I feel like this organization’s on the right track. We need to get hold of the health care debate and make it about what it should be: affordable health care for all Americans. Karen Perry It seems this President is slowly inching towards a dictatorship rule. He is taking more and more power with the media once again playing the

role of willing accomplice. It is up to you the citizens of this great country to become informed, and DO SOMETHING. Call your Senate. Call your representatives in Congress. It is your duty, your American privilege and your right.

Dale H Layton It’s the American way, 28% don't pay ANY taxes and Seniors pay DOUBLE. FLAT TAX! Elaine Talbert So delighted to discover an alternative to selfserving, ultra-liberal AARP...one that is truly on the side of America's over-50 population! Thank you, AMAC!

A Peek into “Outnumbered” By Jedediah Bila

I

t began in Manhattan in October of 2008, in the midst of one of the most passionate election seasons I have witnessed thus far. After a few intriguing encounters with members of the liberal elite, I found myself jotting down conversations that occurred in the gym, restaurants, the school where I was teaching, a museum, and elsewhere. I chronicled my interactions with liberals as they opined about Sarah Palin, Republicans, feminism, Barack Obama, wealth redistribution, and more. It wasn’t until I had embarked upon a new voyage as a conservative columnist and commentator that I realized I had something I wanted to share. I couldn’t help but remember the wise words of my grandfather: “Sometimes it’s the stuff that happens in plain old everyday life—the realness of it all—that speaks the biggest truths.” With that memory, I decided to invite readers to take a step into my world, open their eyes, and look around … to discover what the Left’s version of tolerance, diversity, civility, and feminism really look like … and to see the conservative versus liberal world view illuminated by the simplicity of everyday life. And so I bring you an excerpt from my new book, Outnumbered: Chronicles of a Manhattan Conservative: “Psst!” I heard from the right. I looked around, but didn’t see anyone. “Psst!” I turned again, and this time an adorable old lady—she had to be at least eighty, if not more—was wideeyed and pointing frantically at her collar, then gesturing toward mine. I jumped about a foot in the air, convinced that some grotesque bug was on its way toward my face. I looked down and saw nothing. “You might want to cover that up,” she whispered as she tucked my Palin pin inside my outer jacket. “I don’t want you getting yourself killed now, young lady,” she added. “Oh, it’s okay. I haven’t been beaten up yet,” I said with a laugh. “Please be careful,” she replied. “I nearly got knocked to the ground because of one of those a few weeks ago. It’s just not worth the fight, you know?” As I watched her exit the deli,

8 | www.amac.us

I stood wondering what in heaven’s name had possessed someone to nearly knock down a barely five-foot, eightysomething-year-old woman because of a pin. Where in the hell am I living? I sat for a little while, staring out the window at Lexington Avenue, observing the physical diversity of people who passed by. Did so many of them look different on the outside, but think the same? I wondered if any had hidden their Palin pins, too. It’s just not worth the fight ran through my mind. I lifted the pin out of my jacket. If people don’t fight, there will be nothing left to fight for, I thought. I decided to walk home and, to no surprise, faced my fair share of grimaces and comments. A woman mumbled “Ignorant bitch” as I rounded Third Avenue. A man stopped me to “inform” me that if I wanted to support hatred, I “should move to a place like Utah.” A teenager told me to “get the hell out of Obama’s city.” But one mom carrying an infant gave me a thumbs up, and that made it all worthwhile. Of course, when I told my mom what had happened, she was terrified. Her desire to protect her little girl would always take precedence over any freedom of speech crusade. I promised I’d spend two hours each week in the boxing ring. She wasn’t amused. Dad gave me a stern “Be careful” lecture on the phone after dinner, but I could sense the pride swelling in his voice. There was no way Tony Bila would ever tell me to take that pin off. During my time at Columbia University, he had parked outside repeatedly with an enormous Rush Limbaugh sticker across his rear bumper. Now that’s guts. It’s close to 1:00 a.m., and soon I’ll be heading to bed. I just sifted through some media commentary on how Sarah Palin is the anti-feminist. Someone needs to set that record straight … for the girls who will otherwise grow up thinking that feminism and abortion must go hand in hand. Because they deserve better.

Create a Budget

ª

a n d Take Cont rol of Your Fi nan c e s! C

The savings rate for Americans is the lowest it has been in 73 years.

reating a budget is the first good step you can make to take control of your finances. A budget will enable you to develop a strategy that can address both your short term needs and long term goals. So why do so many of us take little control of our finances? For starters, many of us are afraid. Perhaps we don’t want to see on paper how we’ll be short making this month’s payments while also saving for the next trip to visit our grandchildren. But by looking closely at your expenses, you will have the opportunity to make adjustments to your spending so that you can contribute more to savings and pay for life’s unexpected expenses. Creating your budget is knowing your monthly spending habits and needs. This is accomplished by tracking how much money you earn – and how much money you spend. For at least one month, watch closely how you spend your money and keep all receipts. This will help you come up with an amount to budget for your variable expenses – such as dining out, dry cleaning, or money to your children.

Helpful Tips:

10 | www.amac.us

Take a good look at your entertainment expenses. Can you cut back on these costs without compromising your lifestyle? Pick 2 days a month to pay your bills, or pay bills as soon as they arrive to avoid late fees Decide what you can cut and then cut it! Track savings. Once you see positive results – you’ll feel motivated to save more! Try cutting your spending in the categories you spend the most. Challenge yourself to cut spending in at least 3 categories. Record your spending habits – monitor your budget monthly – and measure your results! Save! Just because you are making good money does not mean that you will be “ok” in 10 or 20 years. You must save! Pay yourself first! It’s never too late to dream! Consider your talents and what you enjoy doing and whether or not these talents can be used to create additional income. continued on pg. 36

A Longer Lifetime Could Cost You I

n October 2009, Carolyn Smyth*, an insurance agent, discussed extended care planning with Rose Williams, her client. Rose understood the need to talk about the consequences of living a long life and how it might affect her family. The agent explained that without a plan, assets and savings could be depleted by $50,000 - $100,000 a year. Without a plan, family members would be chained to her needs, and the family could be forced to make choices based on cost, not choice. After a lengthy discussion, Rose still wanted to analyze the solution of buying Long Term Care Insurance so she ran it by her attorney. The attorney urged her not to buy and said “you have four children and one of them is a doctor; they will be there if and when you need care.” Rose went ahead and purchased the insurance despite the advice of the attorney. A few years later Rose’s health deteriorated as a result of back and hip problems. Her mental acuity was 100% intact, but she needed assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Her son, who was a doctor making a sizeable income, was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and was in therapy and was unable to help. The younger daughter was busy raising her three children on a limited income and was unable to help. The 52 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with breast cancer – unable to help. The one daughter who could help, wouldn’t help unless the other siblings contributed equally. Few consider auto or homeowner's insurance as a waste of money if they never have to use it. Instead, it’s the price one pays to insure against the risk of fire or accidents. The same goes for long-term care insurance; it’s the price one pays for the risk of needing long term care. The reality is that the currently healthy can expect to eventually suffer from one or more chronic diseases, which often results in high out of pocket and long term care costs. Still, most people delay purchasing insurance until their health declines and therefore run the risk of paying higher premiums or being denied coverage altogether. Ellen Dorle, a certified financial planner based in Columbus, Ohio says it is “almost mandatory” to have LTCI, particularly if a client has significant assets. It is akin to having homeowner's insurance in that you hope you don’t have to use it but want to have it.

STUDIES SHOW THAT NINE MILLION PEOPLE OVER THE AGE OF 65 WILL NEED LONG-TERM CARE THIS YEAR. It is estimated that over 12 million Americans over the age of 65 will need long-term care a year by 2020. A separate study by the U.S. Department of Health and human Services shows that those over 65 have a forty-percent chance of living in a nursing home, while ten-percent will stay there at least five years. Seventy percent of the elderly will be cared for by friends and family. The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys did a study comparing the risk of financial devastation brought on by Long Term Care with the risk of financial devastation brought on by a major automobile accident or a house fire. According to that study, the rates of risk were: Automobile Accident:

1 out of 240

[0.4%]

House Fire:

1 out of 1,200

[0.08%]

Long Term Care:

1 out of 2

[50%]

Death Taxes Stealing the American Dream by Dick Patten

14 | www.amac.us

Y

ou work hard, save, and invest – then you die and the IRS confiscates its “share” of your assets. This is how the death tax steals the American dream from those who “have too much.”

“ A study by the Connecticut Department of Revenue found that states with estate taxes had higher unemployment rates and more sluggish economies than states without the death tax. The same study found that the estate tax was the leading reason that wealthy residents were abandoning their roots, taking their money, and moving to states without estate taxes.” ACROSS THE COUNTRY, from Oregon to Ohio to Washington, DC, the American people recognize that the death tax is fundamentally unjust – especially when it destroys the livelihoods of family business owners, farmers, and their workers. Consider third-generation family business owner Lowell Miles of Happy Valley, Oregon. Miles’ business provides more than 100 jobs in the fiberglass and composite industry. As Miles recently wrote in The Oregonian, the state’s largest newspaper, in Portland, “estate taxes force businesses to divert resources from expanding and creating jobs, to ensuring the company can stay open once the owner dies. Those (businesses) that can’t pony up are forced to sell or shutter.” Like the families of many other business owners, Miles’ family will have to pay federal estate taxes when he dies. The current rate is 35 percent on all assets exceeding $5 million, including both personal and business assets. If the Oregon legislature has its way, his family may also have to pay a state estate tax of 20 percent – the highest estate-tax rate in the nation. Combined, the rate could exceed 50 percent. While Oregon’s move towards a confiscatory estate tax will further damage the state’s economy and encourage

businesses to move elsewhere, many other states are looking to ease or repeal their estate or inheritance taxes. As this article went to press, Ohio appeared ready to repeal its estate tax. The House of Representatives already has approved a budget package that includes repeal of the tax. The state Senate is expected to follow the House’s lead and Gov. John Kasich has indicated his support. Lawmakers in Illinois, Indiana, Maine and Pennsylvania also are considering legislation to repeal the so-called death tax. The governors of Maine, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have proposed reducing the tax’s impact by increasing the exemption. A proposal by North Carolina’s governor, meanwhile, to increase the death tax by reducing the exemption, was shot down by the legislature. This flurry of activity is encouraging for a country still struggling with high levels of unemployment. A study by the Connecticut Department of Revenue found that states with estate taxes had higher unemployment rates and more sluggish economies than states without the death tax. The same study found that the estate tax was the leading reason that wealthy residents were abandoning their roots, taking their money, and moving to states without estate taxes. Still, the fight for repeal has been far from easy. Some state and local officials have been more concerned about the short-term loss of tax revenue. What these officials don’t seem to understand is that higher estate taxes equal fewer tax dollars, not more. A recent study from the American Family Business Foundation found that for every $1 increase in federal estate tax revenues, state and local governments lose almost $3 in other tax revenues. continued on pg. 18

Death Taxes Stealing the American Dream continued from pg. 15

That’s because the estate tax is a proven business and job killer – and when businesses go under, or are broken up, income, sales and other taxes go down. State estate taxes have the same effect. Fortunately, the American public gets it. Polls consistently show that more than two-thirds of voters favor permanent death tax repeal. And Congress is paying attention. More than 130 Members of Congress – both Democrat and Republican – have signed the American Family Business Institute’s “Death Tax Repeal Pledge.” These members are now leading a bipartisan fight for Federal Estate Tax repeal. Representatives Kevin Brady (R-TX-8) and Mike Ross (DAR-4) have sponsored “The Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act” (H.R. 1259), which has an impressive number of cosponsors from both sides of the political aisle. A recent study conducted by former Treasury Department economist Steve Entin, now with the Institute for Research on the Economics of Taxation, found that estate tax repeal would increase federal revenues by $89

“Leverett’s family was forced to sell half of their ranch so they could pay the death tax when their father died. Despite Leverett’s efforts to save the ranch – by taking on a second job – the family still is struggling to pay Uncle Sam’s bill.”

billion over a tenFrom the floor of the Ohio year budget period. State Legislature: the Ohio Entin’s finding is State Senate has passed the based on the FY 2011-2012 budget by a understanding that two-to-one majority, repeal would spur effectively killing the death economic growth, tax in Ohio. This is a historic allowing more event for Ohio and for businesses to create patriots everywhere who more prosperity and recognize that the death tax thereby increase is bad for the small total tax collections. businesses which fuel our Estate-tax repeal economy. also would increase the size of the U.S. economy, or gross domestic product (GDP), by about 2.25 percent, private sector output and labor income (hours worked times hourly wage) by about 2.34 percent, and capital stock by 6.1 percent. But repeal is about much more than just numbers and statistics. If you ask 30-year-old Texas rancher Clayton Leverett, it’s about lives, families and heritage. Leverett’s family was forced to sell half of their ranch so they could pay the death tax when their father died. Despite Leverett’s efforts to save the ranch – by taking on a second job – the family still is struggling to pay Uncle Sam’s bill. America would be much better off if the Lowell Mileses and Clayton Leveretts in the nation could invest their time, money and energy into building their ranches and businesses, hiring workers and contributing to the economy and tax rolls – rather than spending all that effort to satisfy the taxman. Congress and state legislators across the nation ultimately will decide whether death taxes are the best way to fill their budget holes. From every possible standpoint, moral and economic, the death tax is the wrong answer. The future of small business and American entrepreneurism stands in the balance. Dick Patten is the President of the American Family Business Institute, a trade association of family business owners, farmers and entrepreneurs working for repeal of the death tax.

True job creators need a voice by Bernie Marcus

I

worked hard to make my own small company into a big one but I never could have succeeded if I had faced the avalanche of impediments that our current government hurls down upon this generation of entrepreneurs. The White House’s job creation strategy is to threaten higher taxes on anyone making more than two hundred thousand dollars a year and to appoint yet another council on jobs. Does anyone really believe this will create the jobs this country needs? I certainly don’t. What I do believe is that we must bring together the hard-working men and women who are on the front lines of job creation – small and medium-sized business founders and owners – to light the way to renewed economic growth. By giving real job creators a voice, whether shopkeepers or software engineers, they can speak from real-world experience about how to create jobs and why job creation can’t be accomplished from Washington. I believe these business men and women could point out the policies that are obstacles and articulate policies that invite growth and investment, and most importantly - job creation. Who better to defend free enterprise than entrepreneurs who have actually created America’s private-sector jobs? These companies – high-tech and low, restaurants and retail stores, manufacturers and bakeries – are the businesses that drive job creation. Half of all American workers are employed at a small business and they have generated two out of three new jobs over the last 15 years. We can’t have a serious conversation about reducing unemployment without listening to the companies that are NOT on the Fortune 500 list. Overregulation, unfair taxes, and new mandates, like the controversial healthcare bill, are choking these jobcreating businesses before they can get off the ground. The President’s State of the Union Address included calls to increase trade and cut corporate taxes, all things that help big businesses, but do little to help the small enterprises and start-ups that are the engines of economic growth. They need relief from the alphabet soup of regulations that stifles them and therefore chokes hiring. From the EPA to the FDA, from the IRS to Sarbanes Oxley, regulations disproportionally affect the smallest firms, drowning America's entrepreneurs in red tape. According to a study published last year by the Small Business Administration, firms with fewer than 20

20 | www.amac.us

employees spend 36 percent more per employee than large firms. Regulations, on average, cost small firms $10,585 per employee each year: $4,120 to comply with economic regulations, $4,101 to comply with environmental regulations, $1,585 to comply with complex tax rules, and $781 to comply with OSHA and homeland security regulations. In fact, more than 144,000 pages of regulations strangle small and large businesses alike. Congress must provide these innovators a break. I know dozens of men and women who started with nothing, waiting in the hallway hoping the mailman would bring enough receipts to make payroll, working through the night, foregoing their own salaries so they could pay their bills, and yet fretting over filing a raft of forms for local, state and government regulators and worrying about bewildering new rules. These are the true job creators and many feel downright abused by a government that ignores them, penalizes them and goes out of its way to impede their businesses. These job creators want to grow their businesses; they want to hire new employees and they understand that they need to pay fair taxes. But they don’t have a forum; they don’t have a voice, and they are frustrated when academics and life-long government employees, bureaucrats who know nothing about creating jobs, determine policies that could either spur or stifle job growth. The heroes of the American economic dream are the people who take the risks, make the sacrifices, and still maintain the beliefs that propel them to success. These job creators must tell us what policies they need to grow their business and put America back to work. I am now calling on all business founders, owners and leaders to join me in the ranks of the Job Creators Alliance, a new organization I am proud to help create. Join me in this quest to allow free enterprise to not only heal our wounded economy, but also to return us to the economic growth that we need to create jobs across America. If you want to join the JCA, contact me at: Bernie@jobcreatorsalliance.org.

Who is

Herman Cain? by Justin Quinn

H

ERMAN CAIN’S rapid rise to

prominence in the early days

of the 2012 presidential campaign is a unique phenomenon for Republican presidential politics. While Democrats typically don’t mind their nominees coming from nowhere, Republicans prefer their candidates to be fully vetted and familiar. Few Democrats could have guessed in 1988 that Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton would go on to unseat a sitting Republican president four years later, but almost every Republican in 1992 could have guessed that Bob Dole would be among the finalists for the GOP nomination in 1996.

Credit Card Debt?

ADVERTORIAL

Solutions that can help you get out of debt.

Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans. CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

Seniors Paying Double Tax on Social Security Income

...AMAC pushes for repeal

24 | www.amac.us

by Daniel C. Weber

O

ne of the cruelest taxes paid by older Americans is the tax they must pay on Social Security income. The average extra tax costs each senior between $1,800 and $3,000 a year.

What had started out as a solution to help bail out Social Security 28 years ago has turned into a mean blow to elderly Americans living on a fixed income. The idea was to tax “well off” seniors to help balance the books and keep Social Security in the black. Now, one out of three seniors is caught in this trap. Gene H. and his wife, Barbara, live in central Florida. They have income from Social Security, a pension and they both have part time jobs earning about $4,000 total for the year. They took the jobs so they would have a little spending money to visit their grandchildren and take some short trips. Their income (“combined income” over $32,000*) classifies them as having “substantial income” in addition to their Social Security and costs them over $1,500 in tax that they must pay on half of their Social Security. Now, keep in mind that they already paid income tax on their earnings before their Social Security contributions were paid - so they wind up being taxed on this income twice! AMAC feels this tax is wrong. It is especially wrong to tax those living on a fixed income that are faced with increasing daily costs for food and housing, before they are hit with $4 per gallon gasoline costs! When you factor in that they have not been given a cost of living increase from Social Security in over 2 years, you readily see they are being hurt by this unfair double tax.

There are several benefits to removing the tax on your Social Security. The first is how the money will be used by the folks who will keep it. That money will be spent locally unlike the so-called Stimulus Act; it will immediately be put into the economy, benefiting all types of business, both large and small. The ripple effect is expected to triple the value of the funds. The total amount of funds involved run into several billions of dollars that will help prime the pump of our stagnant economy. Secondly, it will restore some sanity in the Tax Code. If President Obama and the Congress are serious about only raising taxes on the wealthy then they should take this tax burden off the middle class and go after the multi-millionaires and billionaires. AMAC demands they honor what they have said. And lastly, it will give our elderly people living on a fixed income a break. We owe something to those Americans who have worked all their lives and helped build this great country. They should not have to pay a penalty because they have income from savings or part time jobs. Let us treat them fairly. As you know there are other organizations that claim to be representing seniors yet only AMAC has taken up this cause. Soon our members will be asked to participate in an effort to influence our elected officials to repeal this tax. If you would like to help in this effort please go to: www.amac.us/remove-the-tax-on-social-security Go to our website, www.amac.us and look up the article by Dan Weber on the Social Security tax and click the red button that asks if you want to help. continued on pg. 26

How to replace the lost funds from Social Security if the tax is repealed

on Social Security Income

26 | www.amac.us

Because our nation is in a state of severe debt it would not be a good idea to reduce the funds going into programs such as Social Security unless there was a way to replace the funds. AMAC has at least one proposal to do that. Consider placing a tax on the windfall profits received by trial lawyers when they win a major lawsuit. At present it is common for lawyers to receive 33 1/3% of the settlement. Why not put a cap on the attorney’s fee of 25%? On a million dollar settlement the lawyer would collect $250,000 instead of $333,000 and the difference of 8% would be paid into Social Security. The person who was injured would still collect the same amount. Again, if President Obama is serious about taxing the wealthy more, isn’t that a good way of doing it? To give you an idea of the income of some trial lawyers consider this; John Edwards, who ran unsuccessfully for Vice President with Senator Kerry, earned 27 million dollars in the four years before he ran for the Senate. *note: see Internal Revenue definition of “combined income” - adjusted gross income plus nontaxable income plus one half of your social security benefits equals your combined income.

Finally, a cell phone that’s… a phone!

“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age and get a cell phone. My kids have been bugging me, my book group made fun of me, and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones are so small I can’t see the numbers, much less push the right one. They all have cameras, computers and a “global-positioning” something or other that’s supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren’t much help. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were complicated, confusing, and expensive… and the contract lasted for two years! I’d almost given up when a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being able to stay in touch… with a phone I can actually use.” The cell phone that’s right for me. Sometimes I think the people who designed this phone and the rate plans had me in mind. The phone fits easily in my pocket, and flips open to reach from my mouth to my ear. The display is large and backlit, so I can actually see who is calling. With a push of a button I can amplify the volume, and if I don’t know a number, I can simply push “0” for a friendly, helpful operator that will look it up and even dial it for me. The Jitterbug also reduces

background noise, making the sound loud and clear. There’s even a dial tone, so I know the phone is ready to use. Affordable plans that I can understand – and no contract to sign! Unlike other cell phones, Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I’m never going to use? And if I do talk more than I plan, I won’t find myself with no minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone. David vs. Goliath! A message from George W. Spangler, National Ambassador Director: AMAC took on the considerable challenge of going face to face with AARP. They are the Goliath. We are the David. We smile as we say: “and you know who won!” We are now the largest conservative senior’s organization in the United States. But compared to AARP, we’re still small. That is why we need a veritable army of concerned, convicted believers to help bring our conservative message to America. It is my hope…seconded by Dan Weber, our President and Founder…that you will join our army, or recommit to the tasks we have ahead of us. We want YOU in our army…on the right side. For more information on the Ambassador Leadership Program and how you can help fight the good fight, email AMAC at ambassador@amac.us

Careful Now People on a lot of medications can get confused or forgetful about when to take them. It’s easy to miss a dose or take too many. At Northwestern University in Chicago, Michael Wolf looked into data on 484 patients, ages 55 to 74. The patients were given instructions for seven drugs to be taken over 24 hours, and told to create the simplest schedule. The simplest was four times a day. But Dr. Wolf says fewer than 15 percent got it right.

Fruits, Vegetables, & Chocolate! Flavonoids are antioxidants, commonly found in fruits and vegetables. A systematic review and pooling of randomized trials found that consumption of cocoa rich in flavonoids may improve risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. Eric Ding is an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. He says, “Higher cocoa flavonoid consumption reduced systolic blood pressure, reduced LDL cholesterol, the bad cholesterol, increased HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol.” The study, however, used flavonoid rich cocoa with balanced calorie levels. “In general, darker chocolate is better because they have more flavonoids.” The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and presented at an American Heart Association conference on nutrition and physical activity.

Obamacare Waivers AMAC asks why the Obama administration has granted over 1,400 Obamacare waivers? If Obamacare is so good, why so many waivers? The Daily Caller reported that of the 204 waivers approved in April, 38 went to businesses in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's district. Organizations who receive a waiver are granted a one-year exemption from a new coverage requirement included in the healthcare reform law enacted almost a year ago. On September 22, waiver applications will no longer be accepted, which could force plans to close down or increase premiums significantly, leaving more people uninsured. Waivers were being granted mostly to Democratic districts and organizations who lobbied in favor of the overhaul from the beginning (Nancy Pelosi’s district netted nearly 20% of all waivers) while groups like the AARP got waivers as well.

Social Security Tax Reform A message from Dan Weber, President & Founder, AMAC. We’d like to take this opportunity to provide AMAC members with an update on what we are working on currently. Based on our recent membership poll regarding Social Security tax reform, an overwhelming portion of AMAC membership supports the elimination of the tax on Social Security benefits. On this issue, we have initiated a campaign to bring this issue to the attention of Congress, and have started a dialogue with key Congressional committees to consider this problem. While the first steps on this front have been taken, much work remains to be done. But rest assured, we will continue to fight for the reform of this onerous double-tax and will keep you all posted on all developments moving forth. Thank you for your support. Remove the Tax on Social Security. Visit our website at www.amac.us and sign up here to help in the fight to remove the tax on Social Security

Harry Truman was a different kind of President. But a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House. Truman’s only asset at the time of his death was the house he lived in. His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there. When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an “allowance” and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year. After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them. When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale." On May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise." As President he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food. Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their Which of the following would you prefer offices. Fresh from the Farmstand SUMMER HAS ARRIVED, and your local farmstand or farmer’s market will be piled high with an array of locally grown vegetables. Visiting the farmstand provides an opportunity to select fresh, nutritious produce in a good, old-fashioned setting. Local farmstands usually sell produce that has been picked within 24 hours, allowing the fruits and vegetables to ripen on the tree or vine – thus retaining more of the vitamins and minerals that are lost during shipping. Taste and nutrition are maximized – almost as good as growing your own. Try these recipes that showcase the best the season has to offer; a little bit of summer on a plate.

Tomato Pie 1 - prepared pie crust 3 Tbs. Dijon mustard 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 5 Roma tomatoes – sliced 1 ½ tsp. minced garlic oregano Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Fit the crust into the pie plate, and flute the edge. Prick the bottom and sides of the crust with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Brush crust with Dijon mustard. Place the mozzarella cheese in the bottom of the crust. Top with sliced tomatoes. Sprinkle with garlic and oregano. Return pie to the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until golden.

Fun in the Sun

Who can forget? Harpist Lloyd Lindroth

continued from pg. 28

European settlers sparsely populated the Island and gardened, fished, hunted and raised livestock. Since a major shipping route ran past Hatteras, near the Island’s dangerous shoals, they may have combed the beaches for lost cargo from shipwrecks. The 1700s were hard on the Native Americans. Warring tribes, facing poverty and with no defense against European disease, diminished. Settlers logged and let their livestock roam freely, causing destruction to Island vegetation. Shipwrecks were common due to strong currents, winds and storms. With so many shipwrecks, salvaging for loot became a viable occupation. The Outer Banks were a noted haven for pirates including the infamous Blackbeard. In 1846 a hurricane caused an Inlet to open, separating Hatteras Island from Ocracoke, thus forming the Oregon Inlet. The Hatteras Inlet was deep and navigable, so Hatteras attracted maritime traffic. Visitors enjoy scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, fishing and bird watching. Cape Hatteras is located along the Atlantic Flyway, an important stretch of land for migratory birds. Bring your vehicle and take a ferry across to Ocracoke Island to explore the "Pearl of the Outer Banks." Go back in history to the place where the notorious Blackbeard fought and died in a naval battle. On Ocracoke, enjoy local wildlife such as the Ocracoke ponies; visit historic sites, shops and restaurants. The Wright Brothers Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hills, is another prominent site worthy of a visit. There’s a wide variety of things to see and do for all ages. Or, simply enjoy tranquil moments on the beach. It’s entirely up to you. Jutting out into the Atlantic, Cape Hatteras is also known for being in the path of Hurricanes moving up the East Coast. Hurricane Isabel struck in 2003, devastating the Island which has since recovered. If you plan your vacation during hurricane season, typically from mid August to September, you are encouraged to obtain travel insurance. Your reputable realtor from Hatteras will be happy to answer your concerns regarding coverage. Our family gathering on Hatteras was quite memorable. As our children grow, it is pleasing to know they will have memories of time shared not only with siblings and parents, but with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. When I close my eyes, I can almost hear the waves meeting the shore, the eloquent violin music which filled the walls of "God’s Promise," and the sounds of our family singing the words to "Happy Birthday," colorfully yet quite off key. As I reminisce and replay scenes of our vacation in my head, one stands out in particular. It was a rather misty evening when I captured a glimpse of my father and daughter strolling side by side searching for shells in the sand. It’s one of those moments I’ll treasure forever. Make the Outer Banks of North Carolina the beautiful backdrop to your memorable family vacation.

Attention Business Owners: Every day the government is creating policies that punish you because you are successful Most business owners are fed-up with constantly changing rules that they must comply with. The rules change so you can “fail” their tests and they can come in to audit your business. Davis Maher & Associates is a Human Resources Consulting firm which is focused on solving the Human Resources problems that keep business owners awake at night.

Issues like:

Compliance - The Government has many “Departments” that you must comply with. Employee Issue - Lawsuits, Hiring and Firing, Compensation etc. Policies and Procedures - Imagine sitting across from the “Judge” as they review your Handbook and Job Descriptions.
