United We Stand There’s excitement at AMAC as Generation America, once a conservative rival, has joined forces with AMAC! United, we present a strong force to defend our values and restrict the ever-growing power of government. WELCOME GENERATION AMERICA MEMBERS. TOGETHER WE WILL SUCCEED! We have continued to spread our message with over 50 visits to the offices of our elected officials so far this year. There have been a number of successful Town Halls with AMAC members meeting with their Congresspersons in their local districts. Congress is beginning to listen, and in some cases has taken action on issues we have supported. (See “AMAC on Capitol Hill” inside) AMAC has gathered the most prominent field of health care experts in recent history to lead the AMAC Health Care Symposium in Washington, D.C. on June 9th and 10th. The outcome of this meeting will be revolutionary proposals to improve our health care system, with less, not more, government involvement. Make every effort to attend! Visit www.amachealthcaresymposium.com for info.

by Dan Weber President, Association of Mature American Citizens

In this issue AMAC takes note of the groundswell of young black leaders who have embraced the core of conservative beliefs. It is striking that so many black commentators are championing the cause of traditional values when they forcefully speak out about individual responsibility, personal integrity and religious rights. A revival of these values within the black community and a renewed commitment to conservative principles could have a significant impact on the American political landscape in the years to come. While there have been many black heroes, it is little noted that many held conservative views. (Did you know Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican?) A number of prominent black historic leaders have valiantly fought for equality for all people and have passionately advanced the ideals of economic freedom, limited government and individual prosperity. It is their allegiance to the Constitution and to the conservative ideology that has enabled Americans of all stripes to soar to new heights. Lastly, it is with a sincere heart that I say thanks to all you members who have continued to renew your memberships and to those who have referred AMAC to your friends and neighbors. Because of you we have achieved amazing growth. With God’s grace, our efforts will prevail.

Best regards,

Speaking Your Mind

Americans are speaking out on AMAC’s website. Please visit www.amac.us to give us your views and to read what others are saying!

AMAC Ambassador Program Many members are aware that AMAC offers a grassroots program to promote communication between the Association and community organizations around the country. By recruiting members to serve as “Ambassadors,” our intent is to maintain a cross-country network of communication channels to take the AMAC message to more people and to bring concerns back to us to help shape our initiatives. Here are a few comments received recently via the “Member Forum” page on our website, and you can be sure we’re taking them seriously:

Steve M. says... To be taken seriously by AARP members we need to be able to do things locally as AMAC members. One of the roles of being an Ambassador is "Help organize a local AMAC Chapter in your area." What do you think of an Ambassador page on the AMAC site that is for ambassadors only where information can be shared and we can discuss ideas?

Ddenham says… As members, we need to keep up the word of mouth. So many people my age, and younger, get the AARP card in the mail the minute they turn 50 - and have never heard of AMAC. I"m telling everyone I know. And I still get AARP membership ads in my mailbox on a regular basis. Maybe a more aggressive mailout campaign would help? Surely that's expensive - but AARP gets people just because they don't know any better.

More Efficient Management of Medicare 

Paul E. says… Good, informative article for the membership of AMAC to read. Nicely done. The levels of waste, fraud and abuse have been well documented for several years and communicated a number of times to CMS management. Unfortunately, aside from a collective shrug from CMS man-

6 | www.amac.us

agement and a passing acknowledgement from several concerned members of Congress, nothing much has been done to make real, substantial changes to the program. If we ever get a Congress and President in place that is truly committed to saving Medicare, aside from lip service, perhaps we can finally enact a number of these managerial changes to Medicare to improve its chances of future solvency.

The elderly must be taken care of way beyond any other group of citizens; it is our duty, for all they have given!!!

Hobby Lobby vs. Obamacare

AMAC and Generation America Join Forces

Pauleene says… Thank God for a company like Hobby Lobby, modeled on Christian values. Thank you for having the courage to follow your beliefs and move forward on this ~ We should not have to compromise our values. Blessings to you.

Cindy Billman says… This is great news! The more people/ organizations with the same or similar conservative values merge, the louder and stronger we will become – we MUST take back our country and or constitution. Too bad, the RNC hasn’t realized that!

Elderly are Under Siege Because of Obamacare

Marilyn Coleman says… As a home health care employee and senior citizen, this troubles me. Not only am I witnessing people in need of home health being denied benefits necessary for their well-being and/or rehabilitation, I am seeing more and more DME (durable medical equipment) being denied also. The new codes for diagnosing patients are a nightmare. People need to start taking a stand now; it’s not too late.

Dennis Baran says… I am outraged and saddened at what is happening to this once great country. We reward those that do not help themselves by providing welfare to them, sometimes for a lifetime, working to provide legal status to the millions that are here illegally and then turning our backs on the elderly who made this country what it is. Thousands upon thousands have given their lives for this Great Nation and for the freedom of the world only to have it being destroyed by a party of ignorance.

Jerry Glabowl says… It’s about time that freedom loving organizations join together. Power is in the strength of the people and their support for the Constitution. Get more freedom loving groups to join in and back AMAC. The larger the force the greater the power we have to bring this country back to reality.

Ella says… This is great news! With Obamacare targeting Medicare and the AARP doing their dirty work, we seniors need all the help we can get. Who better than seniors knows the consequences of Big Government? Many of us were witnesses to the horrors suffered by the citizens of Germany and Russia in the 1930s & 40s under the dictators Hitler and Stalin. “A government that is big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you have.” – Barry Goldwater

What the GOP Should be Doing Right Now as Prep for 2016 The 2014 elections are right around the corner and 2016 will be here before we know it. The GOP lost the last two presidential elections for a number of reasons, with poor marketing, messaging, and communications being key components of those losses.

I

’m not a Republican, but you don’t have to be one to realize that if the GOP is smart and cares about winning in 2016, they should already be working hard at righting some 2008 and 2012 mistakes. There are several things GOP leadership should be doing right now if they have their eyes on the 2016 prize. 1. Hire a charismatic, articulate communications team. I’m talking about ten people who can make the rounds on television and radio in particular, debunking false claims and clarifying policy positions. Likeability is key. The ability to break down policy without sounding like an out-of-touch policy wonk is equally important. 2. Figure out what you stand for. In an interview with Vocativ.com, Rand Paul said, “I think that the Republican Party, in order to get bigger, will have to agree to disagree on social issues. The Republican Party is not going to give up on having quite a few people who do believe in traditional marriage. But the Republican Party also has to find a place for young people and others who don’t want to be festooned by those issues.”

by Jedediah Bila

When speaking with the Des Moines Register, Ted Cruz responded to Rand Paul’s comments with, “There are some who say the Republican Party should no longer stand for life. I don’t agree with them. There are some who say the Republican Party should no longer stand for traditional marriage. I don’t agree with them either. I think we should continue to defend our shared values.” Well, which one is it, GOP? And is supporting traditional marriage still a “shared value” by Republicans? Ted Cruz and Rand Paul present two different approaches by two different men who very well may face off in 2016. What will the GOP’s official position be? The communications team I mentioned above should be prepared to defend it. 3. Come up with a clear, concise Obamacare alternative. This process has already begun in the House. The key here is for it to be presented in a way that is user-friendly. Also, stick it on a website that works. 4. Outreach, outreach, outreach. You know those ten people I talked about hiring as part of a television and radio communications team? Well, hire some more to visit college campuses, women’s centers, and other locations where the majority of people there voted for Barack Obama in the last two presidential cycles. Sell your message, or at least make your audience leave those rooms thinking about what you have said. Changing hearts and minds doesn’t happen overnight.

5. Be positive. Sure, there’s a time and place to criticize the wrongs that have been done by the other “team.” But I assure you that most independent voters would much rather hear what you would do right. Opportunity, school choice, job growth, lowering taxes, simplifying the tax code, health care reforms that actually lower costs and expand options, stopping the government from wasting so much of your hard-earned money; drive these messages home. If you believe in young people, put forth policies that protect their privacy and freedoms. Then use your outreach team to talk with them, not at them. On March 19, Rand Paul received several standing ovations at Berkeley - that’s right, Berkeley - because of his emphasis on privacy issues and protecting civil liberties. Young people are listening. If you believe in unity, put forth a clear, succinct, well-marketed jobs plan that benefits everyone regardless of race, gender, and other differences. Yes, I see the one the GOP has on its website. But how many people know about it? Where is that communications team again? The GOP has a decision to make. Either it’s going to play to win - or not. That’s up to them. I, for one, am curious to see what choice they make.

Politics

Balance of Power If Florida’s recent special election victory for Republican David Jolly is any indication of voters’ sentiments heading into the upcoming 2014 midterm election cycle, then Senate Democrats could find themselves battling to maintain their majority come November.

O

f the 36 Senate seats up for election this year, 21 are currently held by Democrats, five of whom are retiring at the end of their terms. The large number of Democratic seats up for grabs this year opens the door for Republicans to make a concerted push to reclaim the majority they squandered in 2006. To flip the Senate in 2014, Republicans will need to pick up six new seats while holding onto the ones they already have. President Obama’s dipping approval rates and Americans’ sustained opposition to ObamaCare could prove to be Democrats’ most challenging obstacles to overcome. Red-state Democrats will have trouble distancing themselves from the president’s progressive agenda and establishing a more moderate identity that can withstand the onslaught of conservative attacks that are sure to be launched. As of now, only the South Dakota race appears to be a true lock for Republicans, where the Republican candidate and former governor of the state, Mike Rounds, has a commanding 20-point lead over Democrat Rick Weiland. Republicans’ chances also look particularly strong in West Virginia and Montana, two states carried by Mitt Romney in 2012. In West Virginia and Montana, states with retiring Democratic senators, the Republican candidates, U.S. Representatives Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Steve Daines (R-MT), lead their Democratic opponents by approximately 14 points each.

by Caroline Rayburn 10 | www.amac.us

The races are much closer in states like North Carolina, Louisiana, Alaska and Arkansas, where incumbent Democrats are fighting to fend off conservative challengers who have made ObamaCare the central focus of their campaigns. In each of these states, Senators Kay Hagan (D-NC), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Mark Begich (D-AK) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) voted to pass the president’s controversial health care law in 2010, a vote that may now have the power to singlehandedly determine their political fate. Conservative candidates and political groups have even put their own spin on President Obama’s “If you like your health plan, you can keep it” statement with a series of strategically contrived, hard-hitting advertisements in battleground states. “If you like your Senator, you can keep her. If you don’t, you know what to do,” ran one television ad referencing New Hampshire Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Shaheen will face former Republican Senator Scott Brown in the midterm election. While many believe the GOP could ride a “wave of enthusiasm” across the finish line in November, Republicans shouldn’t be too quick to pop open the celebratory champagne. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) could be in for a close race against Kentucky’s Secretary of State, Allison Lundergan Grimes, in the general election, assuming he slides past Tea Party candidate Matt Bevin in the May primary. Republicans may also have a tough road to travel in Georgia depending on who emerges from the crowded Republican primary. The Republican primary victor will face

Losing control of the Senate would effectively make Obama a lame duck president and would substantially weaken his ability to achieve any of his second-term goals.

Democratic candidate Michelle Nunn, a former charity executive. With just two years remaining in Obama’s presidency, the 2014 midterm election will have a significant impact on what the President will be able to accomplish in the time he has left. Experts expect Republicans to keep a solid hold on the House of Representatives, meaning that Obama will have his work cut out for him as he seeks to make inroads with his policy agenda and attempts to shape his presidential legacy. Losing control of the Senate would effectively make Obama a lame duck president and would substantially weaken his ability to achieve any of his second-term goals. With plenty at stake in 2014, AMAC will continue to monitor all of the upcoming midterm races, bringing our members the critical election information they need.

Dear friend, There are some people out there who think folks like you and me are a bit “odd”. They think having a stockpile ready for a disaster is something they can put off for “someday” or “never”. But those people are just hiding their heads in the sand. They are dead wrong -- and you are dead right. You’ve seen the evidence and you know the situation is way too serious not to do something about it. When a crisis hits, you’ll be ready. You’ll make darn sure your family won’t go hungry or get herded into a FEMA camp. The fact is, if you don’t take action or if you stockpile the wrong foods, you could be setting your family up to starve. It sounds harsh, but the truth is too many people with good intentions are making critical mistakes with their food stockpiles.

Well, I decided to stop worrying. Obviously, waiting for FEMA to give me a handout in a disaster just wasn’t an option for me. And I was completely turned off by the crazy prices of survival food sold by most stores. So I got in touch with my buddy Frank Bates and put my order in for his Food4Patriots survival food kits. This is Frank’s new line of survival food and there are 4 reasons why it’s literally flying off the shelves: n

Food4Patriots is an incredible value. This high quality survival food is without any fillers or poor-quality “franken-food” that the other guys use to pad their survival meals. They are made and packaged right here in the U.S.A. You won’t believe the prices on these kits – a fraction of the price that other brands charge.

n

There’s no fancy packaging, it’s military-grade sturdy stuff and can stand up to the crazy things that happen in a crisis. This food has a shelf life of up to 25 years, so you have complete peace of mind for the long term. And he’s using the most compact kits so you can store them anywhere in your home without any extra hassle. They’re sturdy, waterproof and stack easily. And extremely covert too.

MISTAKES LIKE… n

n

n

Buying MREs (meals ready to eat) with a 5 year shelf life (depending on where you buy them, they could be nearly expired)… Getting gross survival foods that taste terrible and are so high in salt, MSG and preservatives you could clog your arteries and get yourself sick…

n

Or simply buying the wrong foods and leaving a critical hole in your meal plan, which means your family can become malnourished… n

You can make these meals in less than 20 minutes; just add boiling water, simmer, and serve. I tried ‘em and I think they taste as good or better than any other survival food I’ve EVER had. And you get a whole slew of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you don’t get stuck eating the same thing day-in and day-out. Frank has come up with some impressive FREE bonuses that are ONLY available to folks who purchase one of his kits on a first-come, first-served basis. For example, my 3-month kit came with 5,400+ heirloom survival seeds, 4 hard copy books, an 11-in-1 survival tool, and some other cool stuff.

Protect your family in a crisis with 25-year shelf life survival food from getfood23.com I want to make sure you don’t miss out on this because this is the #1 item to hoard in 2014. Here’s why… If you don’t take action to get your food stockpile right now, you’ll be in the same boat as the brainwashed masses who think “everything is fine.” And if a crisis hits and your family asks, “What are we going to eat?” your mouth will go dry and you’ll feel powerless. But what if you decide right now to secure your food stockpile instead? Just imagine how much better you’ll feel right away. And if a crisis hits and your family asks, “What are we going to eat?” you’ll calmly reassure them that they’re safe and they will have plenty to eat. Listen, I can’t predict the future. I don’t know exactly when or how a crisis will hit. But from everything I see, it could be soon and it could be a big one. That’s why I really want you to get the same peace of mind that I do. P.S. Got a call from Frank and you’ll never believe this… FEMA and DHS just tried to buy up his entire supply of food!

Medicare Supplement Insurance How knowing when to shop could save you money

M

any seniors begin to shop around for Medicare Supplements when they turn 65, or when they realize that they could be overpaying for their insurance. What some people may not know is that companies can decline you for coverage if you have certain pre-existing conditions and your six month Open Enrollment Period is over. A beneficiary will call an agent and get their hopes up when they hear that they can save a lot of money each month by switching plans. Beneficiaries spend the better part of an hour completing an application to then have to wait a few weeks for an underwriting decision. Unfortunately, many beneficiaries experience disappointment when they receive a declination for their Medicare Supplement application. Declinations are largely due to the underwriting that seniors must go through as part of the application process. Underwriting is the process of evaluating a beneficiary’s past and present health history to determine if they are eligible to enroll into a plan. A declination can be very confusing to some beneficiaries that are already in a Supplement because they ask themselves “How did I qualify to begin with?” Here, we will explain to you how you can initially qualify for a supplement, the different enrollment periods, as well as special “no underwriting” periods that occur in some states.

by Diana Wisniewski 12 | www.amac.us

Open Enrollment: This is the six month period of time that starts the first day of the month in which a beneficiary turns 65 or enrolls into Part B. The beneficiary must also have Part A in place. If the beneficiary was eligible for Medicare prior to the age of 65 due to disability, they will have a second Open Enrollment Period available to them beginning the first day of the month that they turn 65. All states have an Open Enrollment Period for eligible beneficiaries.

Guaranteed Issue Periods: These are periods of time in which a beneficiary may apply for a Medicare Supplement without being underwritten. No underwriting requirements guarantees a beneficiary enrollment into a Supplement plan, provided all other qualifications are met. There are Standard Guarantee Issue Periods, and there are Special Guaranteed Issue Periods. Special Guarantee Issue Periods are state specific. Below is a list of the Standard and Special Guaranteed Issue Periods for Medicare Supplements. If you believe you qualify for one of the following Guaranteed Issue Periods, please call one of AMAC’s trusted licensed insurance agents to discuss your options at 800-334-9330. Please be aware that Open Enrollment and Guaranteed Issue Periods do not apply to Medicare Advantage Plans or Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.

Standard Guaranteed Issue Periods: When…

Then….

Plans Available:

A beneficiary is in a Medicare Advantage plan and moves out of the plan’s service area, the plan stops giving care in a beneficiary’s area or the plan is leaving Medicare.

A beneficiary has as early as 60 days prior to the end of coverage, and up to 63 days after coverage has ended to apply.

A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state by an insurance carrier. Applies to switching to Original Medicare.

A beneficiary has Original Medicare and union coverage or Original Medicare and an employer group health plan (including retiree or COBRA coverage) that is a secondary payor to Medicare and that is ending. State laws may vary.

A beneficiary must apply for a Supplement no later than 63 days after the latest of the following three dates: a) the date on the notice of termination received by the beneficiary, 2) the date the coverage ends, 3) the date on a claim denial, if this is the only way the beneficiary was notified of the terminated plan.

A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state by an insurance carrier. If the beneficiary has COBRA, they can wait until the COBRA coverage ends.

A beneficiary has Original Medicare and a Medicare SELECT policy and moves out of the SELECT policy’s service area.

A beneficiary has as early as 60 days prior to the end of coverage, and up to 63 days after coverage has ended to apply.

A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state or state they are moving to by an insurance carrier.

(Trial Right) A beneficiary joined a Medicare Advantage Plan or a PACE Plan when they first became eligible for Medicare Part A at 65 and it is within the first year of their joining, they decide to switch to Original Medicare and get a Supplement.

A beneficiary has as early as 60 days prior to the end of coverage, and up to 63 days after coverage has ended to apply. Guaranteed Issue rights may be extended an extra 12 months in certain circumstances.

Any Medicare Supplement policy that is sold in their state by an insurance carrier.

(Trial Right) A beneficiary dropped a Medicare Supplement to join a Medicare Advantage Plan or to switch to a SELECT Plan for the first time, and they are in the plan for less than a year, they decide to switch back to a Medicare Supplement.

A beneficiary has as early as 60 days prior to the end of coverage, and up to 63 days after coverage ended to apply. Guaranteed Issue rights may be extended an extra 12 months in certain circumstances.

The beneficiary must go back to the Medicare Supplement policy that they had prior to joining the SELECT Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan, if the previous carrier is still offering the plan. If the previous Medicare Supplement included prescription drug coverage, it will have to be purchased without the drug coverage now, as Medicare Supplements no longer include prescription drug coverage. If the prior policy is no longer available, the beneficiary can enroll into the following Medicare Supplement plans: A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state by an insurance carrier.

The beneficiary has dropped a Medicare Supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan because the carrier has mislead the beneficiary or has not followed the rules.

The member can apply up to 63 days from the date their coverage ends.

A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state by an insurance carrier.

The beneficiary’s Medicare Supplement company goes bankrupt and the beneficiary loses their coverage, or the Medicare Supplement coverage ends through no fault of the beneficiary.

The member can apply up to 63 days from the date their coverage ends.

A, B, C, F, K or L as long as the plan is being offered in the beneficiary’s state by an insurance carrier.

Traveling the World’s Longest Yard Sale If you’re an antique and collectables “junkie,” then your “bucket list” aspirations should include participating in the World’s Longest Yard Sale.

Y

ou could travel north on Highway 127 from Gadsden, Alabama or south from Addison, Michigan with thousands of rummagers who join together each year on this fun-filled, 4-day event covering 690 miles over six states. This year’s sale is Aug. 7-10. As in past years, thousands of vendors and residents are expected to line the highway and adjoining areas from dawn to dusk, offering everything from the proverbial kitchen sink (and there usually are many) to the rare collectibles of yesteryear. Be prepared to spend a night or two if you hope to cover a good portion of the 690 mile route. On this unique trip you’ll discover some interesting places, people, and quaint shops. So pack your camera, sunglasses, and a good pair of walking shoes, along with a water bottle and snacks so you will be well prepared for a World’s Longest Yard Sale experience. Originally conceived in 1987 to divert traffic to the back roads isolated by the interstate highway system, the traveling yard sale has been successful in attracting world-wide retailers and individual homeowners/entrepreneurs along the route. Traveling the itinerary, you’ll hear a collection of dialects and incredible stories about previous finds, and you’ll find items that only a grandmother could love! You might say it’s Americana at its best. Here are some examples of what’s in store for you on the sale route: ■ Fentress County ( Tennessee) Chamber of Commerce, headquarters for the event, housed in Ye Ole Jail next to the courthouse in downtown Jamestown.

A visit to his restored home is one of the more than 300 attractions along the route to enjoy. ■ Fort Payne (the intersection of Alabama State Road 35 and Lookout Mountain Parkway) and Fisher’s Crossroads near the Desoto State Park. These are hot sales spots on the route, and you might want to check out the Dish restaurant in Mentone (the fancy chicken salad and a spicy West African stew are great choices). ■ Lookout Mountain, where you pick up US 127 to downtown Chattanooga. This is another good starting/ending point for those who may only want to take in a section of the sale route. ■ The ruins of 268 beehive coke ovens near Dunlap, TN. These ovens were used in the early 1900s to convert coal into coke (an industrial fuel). The walk along the stone wall, with archways where the ovens are located, provides a fascinating break. ■ The intersection of Tennessee State Road 111 and US 127, just north of Dunlap. You’ll find fields full of tents and tables offering traditional yard sale fare. Hopefully, you’ve made reservations at a motel, campground, or the Fall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast Inn, 15 minutes from the sale route. Try to awaken at daybreak, have breakfast and before heading back to the sales route, drive through Fall Creek Falls State Resort Park. This is a “must-see” detour on the route, with its awesome 256foot roaring waterfall. This year’s rains should make it even more so. ■ Pikeville, one of the friendliest stops

on the route. Here you’ll find the Pikeville churches offering their parking lots and restrooms to shoppers, and many civic groups selling baked goods and coffee. Many of the sales are in front of gorgeous historic homes. That’s just a few of the highlights of the sale route. You can learn more about the event at www.127sale.com. This site provides a brochure covering all of the details about the tour, as well as a map outlining the route. One additional caution: Have plenty of space in your vehicle to pack and carry back your new “treasures.” Hope to see you along the way!

Shopping for a Safe Car Not only do vehicles vary in size and color, they can also vary in safety. There are still important safety differences, and some vehicles are safer than others. Many automakers offer safety features beyond the required federal minimums. The following safety features should be considered when purchasing a car:

Vehicle size and weight The laws of physics dictate that larger and heavier cars are safer than lighter and smaller ones. Small cars have twice as many occupant deaths each year as large cars. In crashes involving smaller and larger vehicles, heavier vehicles drive lighter ones backwards, decreasing the forces inside the heavier car and increasing them in the lighter car.

On the road experience Other design characteristics can influence injury risk on the road. Some small utility vehicles and pickups are prone to rolling over. “High performance cars typically have higher-than-average death rates because drivers are tempted to use excessive speed. Combining a young driver and a high-performance car can be particularly dangerous.

Vehicle structural design A good structural design has a strong occupant compartment, known as the safety cage, as well as front and rear ends designed to buckle and bend in a crash to absorb the force of the crash. These crush zones should keep damage away from the safety cage because once the cage starts to collapse, the likelihood of injury increases rapidly.

7 signs of a safe car

Restraint systems Belts, airbags and head restraints all work together with a vehicle’s structure to protect people in serious crashes. Lap/shoulder belts hold you in place, reducing the chance you will slam into something hard or get ejected from the crashing vehicle. If you are not belted, you will continue moving forward until something suddenly stops you - often a hard interior surface that will cause injuries. Shoulder belts are on inertia reels that allow upper body movement during normal driving, but lock during hard braking or in a crash. Belt webbing is stored on the reel, and during a frontal crash any slack in the webbing can allow some forward movement of your upper body. Then you could strike the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield. This problem is addressed in some cars with belt crash tensioners that activate early in a collision to reel in belt slack and prevent some of the forward movement. Airbags and lap/shoulder belts together are very effective. However in some circumstances, a deploying airbag can cause serious injuries and even death. The greatest risk of injury occurs when you are on top of, or very close to an airbag when it starts to inflate. Choose a car that allows you to reach the gas and brake pedals comfortably without sitting too close to the steering wheel. Some cars offer telescoping steering column adjustments that may help. Side airbags are designed principally to protect your chest. They may also keep your head from hitting interior or intruding structures.

Head restraints are required in the front seats of all new passenger cars to keep your head from being snapped back, injuring your neck in a rear-end crash. But there are big differences among head restraints. Some are adjustable, and others are fixed. They also vary in height and how far they are set back from the head. To prevent neck injury, a head restraint has to be directly behind and close to the back of your head. Look for cars that have this type of restraint. If the restraints are adjustable, make sure they can be locked into place. Some do not lock, so they can get pushed down in a crash.

Daytime running lights Daytime running lights are activated by the ignition switch. They are typically high-beam headlights at reduced intensity or low-beam lights at full or reduced power. By increasing the contrast between a vehicle and its backgrounds and making the vehicles more visible to oncoming drivers, these lights can prevent daytime accidents.

Anti-lock brakes When you brake hard with conventional brakes, the wheels may lock and cause

skidding and a lack of control. Anti-lock brakes pump brakes automatically many times a second to prevent lockup and allow you to keep control of the car. If you were trained to brake gently on slippery roads or pump your brakes to avoid a skid, you may have to unlearn these habits and use hard, continuous pressure to activate your antilock brakes. Anti-lock brakes may help you keep steering control, but they will not necessarily help you stop more quickly.

Crashworthiness These features reduce the risk of death or serious injury when a crash occurs. You can get a rating of crashworthiness from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Web site: www.highwaysafety.org.

Retirement

Retiring at 65? Maybe, Maybe Not For many workers, the thought of attaining age 65 once promised a life of leisure - no more alarm clocks, no more heading out to work each day, no more mandatory schedules to follow. It meant joining the ranks of the “retired,” maybe doing the traveling that had been put off for so long, perfecting your dormant golf game, or just relaxing comfortably at home. Sixty-five was the mile marker that we’d long looked at as “retirement age.”

B

ut things have changed. There’s been a shift in demographics that we’re coming to grips with, where 60 is the new 40, and 65 is certainly not the end of the road as far as work life is concerned. Our life span has dramatically increased since 1935, when Congress established the Social Security Act. Back then, the average life span for Americans was less than 62 years, so it made sense to set 65 as the magical “retirement age.” So, many of us will probably hit age 65 and just keep rolling along, perhaps changing jobs but not necessarily leaving the workforce. A 2013 Gallup poll of U.S. adult workers confirmed this, reporting that three quarters of respondents said they’d continue, by choice, to work beyond what they originally targeted as their “retirement age.” Many financial analysts have revamped their retirement planning methodology to address this

new reality, leaning away from simply putting money aside to replace wages, and toward creating the possibility for subsequent careers in which their clients will be reinventing themselves. For many, it’s an opportunity to make the most of what is likely to be another quarter century of productive work. Unfortunately, changing careers is not the only reason many workers will want (or need) to stay employed beyond age 65. Rising costs, vanishing pension plans, disappearance of interest income opportunities, escalating health care costs, and the like have made it clear to many workers that what was thought to be an adequate “nest egg” for their later years will likely be insufficient. Whatever the reason for staying employed past age 65 - and studies have reported that nearly 20% of Americans 65 and older are still working - businesses are expected to benefit from the trend. The Brookings Institute, for example, recently analyzed the impact of delayed retirements on workforce productivity,1 concluding that older workers are typically better educated than mid-career workers. SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, has also studied this issue, noting that a substantial loss of older workers would mean that

“…organizations will have to struggle to replace their skills, knowledge and experience.”2

Planning Your Next Career Move OK…you’ve convinced yourself that you are going to stay in the workforce after you hit your “retirement” milestone, whatever it is for you. Now you need to develop a plan for exactly how to make that happen. Assuming you’re not facing a mandatory retirement policy (and these are becoming increasingly rare in the face of Age Discrimination Enforcement actions), will you elect to simply stay in place, reducing your scope while applying your years of accumulated competence in your present position? Or, will you strike out toward new horizons to try the types of jobs you always wanted to do, but couldn’t? Or, will you start a business on your own, one related to your talents and experiences, or perhaps a totally unrelated business venture?

Unfortunately, changing careers is not the only reason many workers will want (or need) to stay employed beyond age 65. Rising costs, vanishing pension plans, disappearance of interest income opportunities, escalating health care costs, and the like have made it clear to many workers that what was thought to be an adequate “nest egg” for their later years will likely be insufficient.

No matter which path you choose, there are a few things you need to consider.

Option 1 - Staying in place For the first time since the 1940s, workers in the U.S. old enough to retire outnumber teenagers. If those old enough to retire actually start to do so in droves, the Society for Human Resource Management suggests that “organizations … will lose not only the organizational history and institutional knowledge such workers possess but might not have enough new workers to fill the void. So, there is a very real business advantage to retaining older workers.” 3 This bodes well for those that are retirement eligible but want to switch from “upwardly mobile” to “downwardly mobile” while staying in familiar and comfortable career surroundings. You should know that you have a lot going for you, attributes that make you attractive to smart companies.

First, you have the benefit of years on the job and a level of understanding of what makes the company tick, a factor incoming replacement employees will not have. Second, and of at least equal importance, your years of service have probably brought with them an understanding of the value of positive relationships that have been built up with the customers served by the enterprise. Third, at this point you’re not necessarily “in it for the cash,” meaning that you’re probably using the income as supplemental rather than primary financial support for your family. Further, the issue of health care and health-related costs is on your side. Ironically, that’s an area where older workers have an edge. In fact, a study by University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School recently reported: “While older workers may take longer to recover from injuries, studies show that they use fewer sick days on the whole than their younger counterparts, says management professor Peter Cappelli, who directs the Wharton Center for Human Resources. Health care costs are actually less for older workers, according to Cappelli, because most no longer have small children as dependents on their health care plans. Workers also become eligible for Medicare at age 65, which can further reduce an employer’s health care bills. When it comes to job performance, older workers frequently outdo their younger

colleagues, says Cappelli. Older workers have less absenteeism, less turnover, superior interpersonal skills and deal better with customers. ‘The evidence is unbelievably huge,’ he notes. ‘Basically, older workers perform better on just about everything.’”4 So if this is the path you’re pursuing, your options may include working fewer hours, shifting to a pure consulting role, or learning specific new skills that would facilitate your choice of assignments. You’re already equipped for the first two, while the third would most likely require a visit to your company’s internal training program. For example, if you want to prepare yourself to use one of the company’s newer technologies, training resources are probably already available in-house or through the company’s technology provider. If not, a quick trip to a local community college or an online search for training materials will likely provide a fairly easy solution.

Option 2 – Changing Your Environment This is where you reflect on what you really want to do, more for your own fulfillment than for the building of a life career. Here are some examples of the many, many “second-career” pathways that others have taken: continued on pg. 22

Lake-Sumter State College in Central Florida (www.lssc.edu) is a great example of the concept of educator prep programs in action. Lake-Sumter’s Teacher Certification Courses are a competency-based accelerated option for individuals with solid academic skills who hold non-education bachelor’s degrees. The 9-10 month intense program offers on-line instruction in Florida Educator Accomplished Practices. Students are prepared for K-12 teaching anywhere in Florida.

■ CONSULTANT – an ideal choice for someone who has acquired a wealth of knowledge in a particular field, and wants to apply that knowledge in new surroundings. Positions like this typically afford much flexibility, like setting your own hours, working from home (or while at the beach!), or being selective in accepting assignments. Companies are more than happy to provide opportunities for people with highly specialized skills. ■ TOUR GUIDE – by this stage of your life, you’ve probably hit many of the popular destinations in the country, or at least in your immediate locale. Why not take advantage of what you’ve learned about the places you’ve visited by sharing your knowledge with other visitors? This type of position offers a high degree of flexibility and interaction with a wide variety of people. ■ RETAIL/TEMPORARY WORKERS – it doesn’t take a huge amount of experience or specialized knowledge to join the ranks of clerical workers in stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, etc. You’ll need to learn the protocols and the layout of the store, but that’s about the extent. Since its low pressure for you, you can have a great time helping consumers and in turn building rapport for the store.

22 | www.amac.us

■ SCHOOL TEACHER – the academic world understands that a wealth of practical knowledge is available via the ranks of retired workers. In fact, colleges in several states have launched “educator prep programs” designed to certify eligible seniors for classroom teaching. Regardless of what specific secondcareer choice you make, you’ll probably need to pick up some additional training to get you ready. Don’t panic… there’s a wide variety of sources you can turn to for help. For example, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration maintains a community service and work-based training program for low-income, older workers that is chock full of helpful information and guidance. It’s called “The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)” and as recently as last year provided service to nearly 77,000 enrolled participants. Workforce50 (www.workforce50.com) is another source of valuable information for the post-retirement job seeker. Their website tag line - “No pastures

here” - hints at a wide variety of material available to individuals exploring second-career options, including job listings, job search tips and techniques, and specific sources of training from several accredited organizations. In addition, nearly every neighborhood has a local university branch or community college offering vocational training in a virtually unlimited range of occupations. A simple visit to your local library can point you to these services.

Option 3 – Start a Business of Your Own The field is wide open on this option, and there are many directions you can take. The really attractive aspect of this option is the opportunity to finally be your own boss! By launching your own enterprise you take total command…you merge flexibility with control, becoming the commander-in-chief of your very own ship! But what business should you consider? Just like in option 2 - a change of scenery with another employer - you’ll probably want to stay with something you’re familiar with. If you have technical expertise in the field of Information Technology, for example, you could consider setting yourself up as an independent consultant to an audience of people confounded by the ever-changing landscape of home computers. If you’re handy with tools, just about every neighborhood has a wide variety of uses for a “Mr. Fixit type” individual for small or medium scale jobs, ranging from carpentry, to plumbing, to painting, and beyond. If you’ve developed skills in a particular craft, you might set yourself up as an instructor to others interested in learning the ins and outs of that craft. There’s also the franchise route, if you have the financial resources to invest. Franchising provides the benefit of setting up a business in an established structure, where public awareness of the product or service you’ll be offering is already built, allowing you to skip the pains of building brand recognition

Retirement

Retiring at 65? Maybe, Maybe Not (often a long, arduous process). Franchising also typically settles many of the planning steps you’d need to consider, like location, advertising, marketing, and so on. No matter what direction you pursue, know that help is available. The internet offers abundant sources of reference and guidance to get you started, like those offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration at sba.gov. This rich source of information will help you achieve your goal. Likewise, once you get yourself in motion, sources like AMAC affiliate The Tarkenton Companies can help you plot a course and stay on track. Their gosmallbiz.com and smallbizclub.com subsidiaries, for example, offer assistance from general consulting to training, along with coaching and specific tools to help you run your business. Through these services, you can establish connections with industry professionals, subject matter experts, and other entrepreneurs to obtain helpful information and insights when you need them.

The Choice is Yours! Whether you need to continue working or just want to, the great thing about heading into retirement is that you have some options to consider. In fact, for many people, entering the so-called “retirement” phase of their lives becomes an eye-opener of sorts, presenting pathways they can pursue that they didn’t realize existed. President Jimmy Carter, in his book “The Virtues of Aging,” put a fine point on the subject with this quote: “In addition to transient pleasures, it’s also helpful to recapitulate our personal accomplishments… or interests of the past…we can now make time to resurrect one or more, learn more about them, and develop a new hobby or profession…The choices are unlimited. We should consider our life expanding, not contracting.”

Congressional Leaders are Listening to AMAC Members Overview of pending legislation of interest to our members

B

uilding on the momentum gained in 2013, your AMAC team in Washington, DC continues to extend the association’s message among the nation’s lawmakers through spring, 2014. Holding nearly 50 meetings with legislators as of this writing has allowed AMAC to establish and expand key alliances with Congressional coalitions and leadership factions. In March, AMAC members were featured in a Congressional video describing the damaging effects ObamaCare has had on their healthcare. In April, an AMAC call to action that centered on member contact with Congress in Washington contributed to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s withdrawal of regulations that would have negatively altered the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit. Our efforts in Washington also uncover opportunities for AMAC to support legislation that matches the association’s mission. Listed below are some of the bills AMAC has supported thus far in 2014.

H.R. 4031 VA Management Accountability Act Introduced by Representative Jeff Miller (R-FL), H.R. 4031 seeks to increase accountability within the Veterans

Administration (VA). This bill gives the Secretary of the VA the authority to fire or demote employees whose work performances warrant removal and thus protect veterans from future bureaucratic injustices.

H.R. 4015 SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act Introduced by Representative Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), H.R. 4015 seeks to permanently repeal the Sustained Growth Rate (SGR) as the method used to control spending by Medicare on physician services. The SGR’s outdated payment method has already forced physicians to treat fewer Medicare patients, which has consequently limited seniors’ access to the doctors and vital care they need.

H.R. 4160 Keep the Promise to Seniors Act Introduced by Representative Renee Ellmers (R-NC), H.R. 4160 ensures that mature Americans and seniors maintain access to their Medicare Part D plans by blocking harmful prescription drug provisions proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

H.R. 4201 Seniors Right to Know Act Introduced by Representative Jeff Denham (R-CA), H.R. 4201 ensures that mature Americans and seniors have access to critical information regarding changes to their Medicare Advantage plans and requires plan sponsors

to notify beneficiaries when differences occur as a result of ObamaCare requirements.

H.R. 2181 Safe Food for Seniors Act of 2013 Introduced by Representatives Tom Latham (R-IA) and Peter Roskam (R-IL) last year, H.R. 2181 protects seniors by ensuring that food managers in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) are properly trained and qualified to oversee daily food operations. Requiring the directors of food services in SNFs to be certified and to meet specific health standards, H.R. 2181 will help to ensure that patients have access to safe, healthy nutrition services.

S. 2015 Welfare Reform and Upward Mobility Act Introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) in the Senate and Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) in the House, S. 2015 institutes a number of common sense policies that seek to reduce the number of individuals on state welfare rolls. continued on pg. 26

S. 1726 and H.R. 3541 ObamaCare Taxpayer Bailout Prevention Act Introduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Congressman Tim Griffin (R-AR), S. 1726 and H.R. 3541 seek to eliminate the “risk corridors” provision in ObamaCare that holds the American taxpayer responsible for any ObamaCare-inflicted financial losses sustained by participating insurance companies.

H.R. 2504 Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act of 2013 Introduced by Congressman Greg Walden (R-OR), H.R. 2504 specifically enables highly skilled medical professionals, such as physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives, to order home health services for Medicare beneficiaries

H.R. 3894 Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act Introduced by Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY), H.R. 3894 rightly eliminates income taxes on Social Security benefits. Under H.R. 3894, Social Security benefits would be neither taxable nor reportable on individual tax returns, enabling beneficiaries to retain more money for retirement while restoring the integrity of the program.

H.R. 3811 Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act of 2014 Introduced by Representative Joe Pitts (R-PA), H.R. 3811 takes appropriate and necessary steps to ensure that personal health care information is protected. Additionally, it requires the Department of Health and Human Services to notify individuals of any breach on the health care law exchanges that endangers sensitive data and information within two business days.

H.R. 3796 Comprehensive Care Payment Innovation Act A bipartisan bill sponsored by Representatives Diane Black (R-TN) and Richard Neal (D-MA), H.R. 3796 seeks to provide quality, affordable health care for seniors in a manner that prioritizes patient outcomes and reduces costs for taxpayers. This bill employs a bundle payment program, allowing health care providers to treat a patient for an episode of care for the duration of that care.

Technology Breakthrough! Safe, comfortable bathing from Jacuzzi®

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A WALK-IN TUB:

A Bath Again…

Safely and Affordably!

 Jacuzzi®

PointPro® Jet System

New & Improved

 Low Threshold Step

The Jacuzzi® Walk-In tub is luxurious, feature-packed and affordable! There is nothing like the simple pleasure of taking a warm bath. The cares of the day seem to fade away, along with the aches and pains of everyday life. Unfortunately for many aging Americans with mobility issues, slipping into a bath can result in slipping onto the floor. The fear of falling has made the simple act of bathing and its therapeutic benefits a thing of the past until now. Jacuzzi®, the company that perfected hydrotherapy, has created a walk-in tub that offers more than just safe bathing, peace-of-mind and independence, it can actually help you feel better. Unlike traditional bathtubs, this Walk-In Tub features a leak-proof door that allows you to simply step into the tub rather than stepping precariously over the side. It features a state-of-the-art acrylic surface, a raised seat, and the controls are within easy reach. No other Walk-In Tub features the patented Jacuzzi® PointPro® jet system. These high-volume, low-pressure pumps

feature a perfectly balanced water to air ratio to massage thoroughly yet gently. Some swirl, some spiral, some deliver large volumes of water and others target specific pressure points. They are all arranged in precise locations designed to deliver a therapeutic massage, yet they are fully adjustable so that your bathing experience can be completely unique.

QUALITY A walk-in tub is a major investment. You want to find a quality tub that will last for decades. Look for one that’s 100% leak-proof, mold-resistant, full metal frame construction and one that’s American made. WARRANTY Ask for a lifetime “no leak guarantee.” The best tubs offer a lifetime warranty on both the tub and the operating system. PAIN RELIEVING THERAPY Find a tub that has both water and air jet therapy to soak away your aches and pains preferably with a perfectly balanced water to air mix. This tub is the first to offer a specialized foot massage experience. Its unique spinning motion provides optimal therapy to feet and legs. Best of all, you get it at no additional charge. COMFORT Insist on ergonomic design, easy-to-reach controls. ENDORSEMENTS Only consider tubs that are ETL or UL listed. Also look for a tub tested to IAPMO standards and that’s USPC Certified.

Conservative Heroes The relationship between success and conservative principles is undeniable. The following people personify conservatism and their passionate commitment to it is truly inspirational. Please enjoy these uniquely American success stories of three prominent individuals that demonstrate how hard work and perseverance along with conservative mentorship can lead to significant achievement, regardless of where one may start out in life.

Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas Justice Thomas’ road to the Supreme Court began in the small, underprivileged town of Pin Point, Georgia. Growing up in poverty, he was abandoned by his father when he was two years old. When Thomas was seven, his mother remarried and sent him and his brother to live with their grandfather. His grandfather encouraged him to attend seminary school during his high school years, and he did so despite being the only African American on campus. He endured pervasive racism, yet managed to graduate with honors with the intention of becoming a Roman Catholic priest. Thomas again experienced severe racism at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Missouri and ultimately left the school. He enrolled in Holy Cross College

in Massachusetts and graduated ninth in his class with a degree in English. He then enrolled in Yale Law School. After law school, Thomas went to work as an assistant to United States Attorney John Danforth in Missouri. From there, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of Education in the office of civil rights by President Ronald Reagan. President Reagan promoted Mr. Thomas to lead the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). During his time at the EEOC, his conservative principles began to flourish. He set about to change the EEOC by rejecting programs that set numerical goals and timetables for the hiring of minorities, instead allowing businesses more flexibility in these kinds of hirings. These changes brought him criticism by supporters of the EEOC who claimed he was undermining the purpose of the agency. Nonetheless, Thomas focused on diminishing discrimination in the workplace and emphasized self-reliance for African American workers. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush nominated Thomas to the U.S. Court

Often referred to as the most conservative member of the nation’s highest court, Justice Clarence Thomas is a strong supporter of state’s rights. He has taken conservative positions regarding free speech, the death penalty and affirmative action.

of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and the Senate quickly confirmed the nomination. Just two short years later, the president again turned to Thomas, this time to fill a seat on the Supreme Court left vacant by retiring Justice Thurgood Marshall. Thomas faced a contentious confirmation process as congressional Democontinued on pg. 32

We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

Sit up, lie down — and anywhere in between!

crats and civil rights activists strongly opposed his nomination. The peak of Justice Thomas’ nomination process came when University of Oklahoma law professor Anita Hill testified that she was sexually harassed by him when they were both working at the EEOC. However, there was no conclusive evidence to prove Hill’s statements and the Senate Judiciary Committee sent Thomas’ nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation. The Senate confirmed Thomas’ nomination on October 15, 1991 and he was sworn in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court on October 23. Often referred to as the most conservative member of the nation’s highest court, Justice Clarence Thomas is a strong supporter of state’s rights. He has taken conservative positions regarding free speech, the death penalty and affirmative action. A fearless jurist, he is unafraid of voicing opposition to majority decisions regardless of political popularity. Conservatives applaud both Justice Thomas’ conviction that constitutional interpretation should be made under the auspices of the framers “original intent” and his opposition to judicial activism.1

Economist Thomas Sowell Born in Gastonia, North Carolina, Thomas Sowell moved to Harlem in New York City when he was around the age of eight or nine. Although he attended classes for gifted students and ranked at the head of his class at Stuyvesant High School, Sowell dropped out to work in a factory as a delivery person and also as a Western Union messenger. He did finish high school by attending night school and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps. After his service, Sowell enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC and later transferred to Harvard University. While at Harvard, Sowell wrote his senior thesis on Karl Marx. While Sowell was a Marx sympathizer as an undergraduate, he slowly embraced conservatism as he worked towards his Master’s degree in economics at Columbia University.

32 | www.amac.us

After Columbia, Sowell had the opportunity to study under future Nobel Memorial Prize for Economic Sciences winners Milton Friedman and George Stigler at the prestigious Chicago School of Economics at the University of Chicago, where he would earn his Ph.D. in economics in 1968. Sowell has worked as an economist with the Department of Labor and also as an economic analyst at AT&T. He has taught at universities including Cornell, Amherst, UCLA, Rutgers, Howard University and Brandeis University. He was asked to serve in President Reagan’s first cabinet but declined because he felt his scholarly reputation would be diminished if he entered politics. Sowell is an advocate of personal ambition and hard work, as opposed to government intervention, as a means of improving one’s life. He believes that government programs designed to help African Americans by leveling the playing field for them has actually hurt their opportunity for equality. For example, Sowell believes that welfare and other government-inspired social programs damage blacks by fostering a dependence on government that reduces their motivation to succeed by their own merits. Predictably, Sowell’s views have made him the target of much criticism by liberal elites. His belief that poverty among minority groups is less a result of racial and societal discrimination than of a

group’s values, ethics and attitudes has caused a frenzy of opposition from leftists and alienated him from liberal black leaders like Reverend Jesse Jackson and the late Benjamin Hooks. A prolific writer, Sowell is the author of numerous books on subjects including economics, education, ideology, history, and race and ethnicity. In his book, A Conflict of Visions: Ideological Origins of Political Struggles, Sowell looks at the differing world views of liberals and conservatives through the lens of constrained versus unconstrained vision. According to Sowell, the constrained or liberal world view sees people as those whose behavior is based on self-interest. The constrained view also sees people as having little ability to change their situations on their own. However, the unconstrained or conservative world view sees people as directed by reason with the ability for self-improvement. Sowell’s opposition to government social programs including affirmative action, busing, racial quotas and welfare has made him a hero among conservatives and a pariah among liberals. He is currently the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institute in Stanford, California. He is the recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the Bradley Prize for intellectual achievement and the prestigious Francis Boyer Award presented by the American Enterprise Institute.2 continued on pg. 34

United States Senator Tim Scott Born poor in North Charleston, South Carolina, Senator Tim Scott was raised by his single mother who worked 16 hours a day as a nursing assistant. As a youngster, Scott learned the importance

of faith and hard work. He worked at a movie theater and later at a Chick-fil-A restaurant to help make ends meet for his family. It was while working at Chick-fil-A that Scott would meet his mentor, John Moniz, the chicken franchise’s owner. Moniz, a devout Christian who embodied a strong work ethic, encouraged Scott and taught him that the American Dream was in reach for anyone who studied hard, worked hard and applied their talents to the task at hand. At the time, Scott was floundering in high school and it was Moniz who suggested that football could provide Scott with access to a college education. By the time Scott finished high school, he had earned a partial football scholarship to Presbyterian College. He later transferred to Charleston Southern University where he graduated with a degree in political science. Moniz did more than encourage a young Scott to play football. He educated him on conservative principles including the relationship between hard work and success and how low taxes pave the way for a healthy business environment. When Scott graduated from college, he jumped into the business world enthusiastically, running an insurance agency and becoming a partner of a real-estate agency. He eventually built his insurance business, Tim Scott Allstate Insurance Company, into one of the most successful Allstate branches in South Carolina. His initial foray into politics came when he decided to run for Charleston County Council. Scott had yet to declare a party affiliation and although most of his friends were Democrats, he drew upon the teachings of his mentor, John Moniz, and made the philosophical decision to run for office as a Republican. Candidate Tim Scott won that county seat by an 80% to 20% margin over his Democratic opponent. Tim served 13 years as a County Councilman and after a term as a state representative in the South Carolina legislature, he launched a successful run for Congress in 2010. Scott represented South Carolina’s first district for two years before being appointed by Governor Nikki Haley to replace retiring

Senator Jim DeMint in the United States Senate in December, 2012. Scott will run this November to win the final two years of DeMint’s term. While in the House, Scott clearly established that he is his own man. He declined an invitation to join the Congressional Black Caucus saying that it was not necessary for him to represent one group over others. He is a staunch fiscal conservative and voted against raising the debt ceiling despite pleas from House leadership to do so. In the Senate, Scott is working on empowering Americans through his Opportunity Agenda initiative. His plan is designed to provide strong initiatives that give students and wage earners the best chance at achieving the American Dream. Included among these initiatives is economic freedom created through tax reform and the expansion of school choice to ensure that all children have the opportunity for a quality education. His early life experience taught him that success is achieved by individuals, not created by bureaucrats in Washington, and he recognizes the value of education and mentorship. Scott also acknowledges the threat that out of control spending poses to the future of America. In his first 100 days in the Senate, he worked with colleagues to introduce a Balanced Budget Amendment and also was a co-sponsor of a bill to ban earmarks, a process of packing bills with wasteful pork-barrel spending. Considered a rising star among the GOP, Senator Scott sits on several Senate committees including the Special Committee on Aging; the Small Business Committee; and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Award and Alumnus of the Year award by Charleston Southern University.3

Many parents and grandparents pulled slightly worn Kennedy halves out of circulation. The coins in this exclusive offer are far superior. Conservatism is Colorblind “Conservatism, we are told, is out-of-date,” Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater wrote in his landmark 1960 book, The Conscience of a Conservative.1 Writing during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history, Goldwater – a prominent leader of the modern conservative movement – witnessed the rise of a radical political philosophy that was preceded and enabled by the New and Fair Deals of the previous two decades.

T

his newfound “social liberalism” engulfed the ‘60s and set the tone for an intense debate over civil rights, the women’s movement, sexual liberation and the dawn of a new progressive era. One of the most significant outcomes of this “cultural revolution,” and specifically within the civil rights movement, was the realignment of the African-American voting bloc and its impact on the political and cultural climate in America. Unfortunately, as is often the case with complex historical subjects, important details have been lost, forgotten or intentionally marginalized by certain parties over time, and the history of civil rights in America is no different. While this period of racial upheaval signified a monumental shift in the voting identity of black Americans, conservative prin-

ciples, values and philosophy remained unchanged. Still, leaders of the Left have repeatedly pitted conservatism against civil rights, a logically fallacious tactic, with many in media and other fellow travelers continuing to glorify the role the Democratic Party and social liberalism played in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Holding high the banner of equality, the modern Left has worked to obscure the real history, principles and beliefs of conservatism, particularly individual choice and economic freedom, as the tried and true basis for individual rights, equality of opportunity, merit-based socio-economic advancement and prosperity for the American Citizen. Certainly, there was a strong “conservative coalition” formed between conservative Republicans and Democrats in the mid-20th Century, particularly in the U.S. Senate, where commonality existed between members of both parties on issues of limited government and economic freedom. However, regularly forgotten or conveniently obscured, is the simple fact that over a roughly 100-year period in American history – from the end of the Civil War to the mid-1960s – a strong block of one political party, the Demo-

cratic Party, was largely responsible for working to prohibit the cause of racial equality in America. A deeper review of the history of civil rights in our country is necessary. For nearly 150 years, many African Americans faithfully supported the platforms and principles of the Republican Party, many of which align with core conservative principles that continue today. Shortly following the end of the Civil War, Congress approved the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was ratified shortly thereafter, prohibiting both the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen’s “race, color or previous condition of servitude.” It was Republicans in Congress who ardently spearheaded this legislative initiative in order to promote and secure suffrage for African Americans, while the

vast majority of Democrats continued to oppose true, tangible equality for blacks in society. Without question, the Reconstruction Era was one of the most complicated and contentious periods in our history (as is usually the case following a long and terrible conflict), an era marked with enduring economic hardship, political and social strife, conflicting policies and questionable overall impact. That being said, the fact remains that during Reconstruction, the Republican Party strongly supported newly enfranchised blacks exercising their rights and voice in government for the first time in American history. An example of this can be seen in 1867, when Republicans aided a coalition of blacks in attaining political offices at both the state and federal levels, a “large-scale experiment in interracial democracy unlike that of any other society following the abolition of slavery.”2 Republicans continued to push for egalitarianism through more “equitable taxa-

tion legislation [and] laws against racial discrimination” as part their aggressive Reconstruction agenda.3 The emergence of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in 1867, however, thwarted efforts by Republican leaders and African Americans to further advance racial equality in the South. Turning to violence to counter Reconstruction policies, white supremacists used the KKK to threaten and intimidate Republicans and blacks who resisted or challenged white authority. The KKK succeeded in driving out blacks who had been elected to public office in the South and helped pave the way for Southern Democrats to regain political power and put an end to Reconstruction. It wasn’t until the Great Depression and the 1930s that the political tides began to turn in America. Beginning with Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936 and Harry Truman in 1948, African Americans broke away in significant numbers from the rank and

file of the Republican Party in favor of new, Democratic social welfare programs, programs that actually caused philosophical cracks within the Democratic Party itself. For example, the breaking away of FDR’s Vice President John Nance Garner was largely due to concerns over the New Deal and Executive Branch overreach. By the time President Lyndon B. Johnson, a southern Democrat who for a long time as a Congressman and Senator sided with the “solid south” in stymieing moves to advance civil rights, eventually signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law and instituted the “Great Society” programs, the black voting bloc had almost entirely shifted to the Left, where it largely remains today. African American voters had established a new political identity and along the way had basically abandoned the party that was once crucial to the demise of slavery and the advancement of equal rights for all people. continued on pg. 40

Fast forward to modern times, the social liberalism model that has been adopted by contemporary Democrats hinges on the federal government playing a larger, more instrumental role in the lives of individuals. Roosevelt’s New Deal relied heavily on government to help minorities and other “disadvantaged” constituencies find work. Truman’s Fair Deal built upon Roosevelt’s liberal domestic agenda by expanding social welfare programs and increasing the power of the federal government. The combination of President John F. Kennedy’s promotion of civil rights leg-

contortion of public opinion and has cemented a number of GOP misconceptions in American history books. As a party, over 80% of Republicans in the House and Senate voted to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin and desegregated schools and public facilities. Conversely, less than 70% of Democrats voted to pass the bill, which is considered to be a hallmark of liberal achievement. While the vast majority of Republicans serving in Congress in the ‘60s over-

Most important to remember is that in all of this, Republicans’ involvement in the civil rights movement has been largely overshadowed and falsely depicted by vocal proponents of social liberalism. This has resulted in the

whelmingly supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was critical to its passage, “the corollary was that conservatism opposed the civil rights agenda when it called for or depended on big government.”4 This is important to note because some prominent conservative leaders, like Goldwater, did in fact oppose the legislation on purely constitutional grounds. Believing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 achieved its goals through an unconstitutional expansion

of government power, Goldwater, and a small minority of conservative Republicans, voted against it, despite being one of the most ardent supporters of the objectives of the civil rights movement. In fact, Barry Goldwater had a long, distinguished and demonstrated history of championing civil rights in his home state of Arizona before civil rights ever became a prominent issue on the national stage. Regardless, it was the civil rights movement in conjunction with the allure of federally established social welfare programs that radically altered the way many people, particularly African Americans, regarded government. This newfound social liberalism, manifested via federal education, health care and welfare programs, became entrenched in the prevailing government institutions and threatened the most fundamental and foundational principles of the Republic. In many cases, the expectations established by social welfare programs have undermined the core principles of conservatism and have fostered a dangerous culture of government dependence. By and large, African Americans have been the unfortunate victims of these social welfare policies that continue to constitute an integral part of the Democratic Party’s platform. Instead of offering a “helping hand,” many of these policies have been nothing more than a hurting hand to millions of Americans, especially minorities, who remain impoverished and underemployed. Operating under the guise of increased personal liberty and individual empowerment, social liberalism has artfully deceived many Americans, causing them to rely disproportionately on government in order to meet their basic needs, while enabling and preserving the socioeconomic status quo. Promoting his “War on Poverty” policies in 1964, President Johnson promised “not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it, and above all, prevent it.”5 Yet, after “five decades of big-government ‘solutions,’ Washington runs more than 80 means-tested aid continued on pg. 41

programs providing cash, food, housing, medical care and social services to the poor and near-poor and [has] spent close to $20 trillion,” says Dr. Edwin Feulner, Founder of the Heritage Foundation.6 Today, it is clear that social liberalism and welfare programs have done little to better lives, address inequality or reduce

the poverty rate, which “remains nearly as high as it was in the mid1960s,” according to Feulner.7 Even in the ‘60s, conservative leaders recognized the perilous implications of a society governed in adherence to social liberalism, in part because it conflicts directly with the Constitution’s purpose to limit the functions of government. “Throughout history, government has proved to be the chief instrument for thwarting man’s liberty,” Goldwater warns in The Conscience of a Conservative.8 Goldwater understood that the call for more government interference in the lives of individuals could only result in

forgone freedoms, and the sacrifice of personal liberty would come at a high cost to the American people and society. Even though social liberalism has become widely accepted and politically preferred by a growing number of people, the average American continues to consider the ideals of conservatism - limited government, economic freedom and individual prosperity – pivotal to achieving the American Dream and wholly intrinsic to the American way of life. Yet, there seems to be an apparent disconnect between American values and governance in Washington. Goldwater poignantly identified the contradiction he witnessed first-hand in Congress: In a country where it is now generally understood and proclaimed that the people’s welfare depends on individual self reliance rather than on state paternalism, Congress annually deliberates over whether the increase in government welfarism should be small or large. In a country where it is now generally understood and proclaimed that individual liberty depends on decentralized government, Congress annually deliberates over whether vigorous or halting steps should be taken to bring state government in line with federal policy.9 Time and time again, social liberalism has promised far more than it has been able to deliver. The New and Fair Deals and Great Society programs have not made good on their pledge to the American people, making it more important than ever “to demonstrate the practical relevance of Conservative principles to the needs of the day.”10 Despite repeated charges that were hurled at conservatism, Goldwater boldly claimed that a conservative pulse still beat strongly throughout America in the 1960s. It continues to do so today because many have recognized the value of conservatism as a proven political philosophy eager to empower individuals and act as another vital check against

governmental overreach, regardless of skin color, religion, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic upbringing or otherwise. Rooted in the very ideals of individual freedom and limited government, conservatism has appealed to a broad base of people for centuries. These principles, which elevate the rights of the individual over the agenda of a group, emphasize enumerated restraints on the powers of government and, above all else, seek to preserve and extend freedom, make it possible for conservatism to transcend all socio-economic backgrounds, races and ethnicities, even today. Though Washington’s turn to the Left suggests a decline of conservatism, Americans continue to hold tightly to these core beliefs and remain hesitant to put their trust in an unlimited, unrestrained government. It is conservatism, a color-blind philosophy that emphasizes hard work, self-determination, individual responsibility and market-based choice over government cronyism, that offers every person the opportunity to improve their lives and experience success.

ith that, he walked out of the room, leaving me to wonder how many sunsets were left for me to enjoy. That was in 1984, and my journey to overcome blind ness began in earnest. I was born with severe hearing loss, so now I would have to cope with a double disability. Early symptoms of RP are night blindness and tunnel vision. I was constantly bumping into people and falling over objects. Throughout the years, I learned to use a white cane to travel safely, to use talking books from the National Library for the Blind, and to use Zoom Text, a computer program that enables text to speech and offers visual help for low vision. My wife, Mary, never stopped praying for a cure and believing that we would get good news. We received the good news in February, 2014. When I visited a Retinal Specialist who treats RP, I obtained a prescription for Valproic Acid, a medication used to treat seizures since 1892. The University of Miami started prescribing Valproic Acid for RP treatment in 1984 resulting in approximately 70% of RP patients showing various degrees of improvement in visual acuity and a delay in the progression of the disease. After six weeks on a low dosage, I noticed more details in the sunlight. Brown blobs turned into cows, stakes turned into trees, and I could read street signs again. I thought it was wishful thinking, but after examination, improvement was confirmed. My vision in my worst eye improved from 20/240 to 20/40. The vision test was repeated to confirm the results. The doctor was so excited, he said he felt like jumping over the moon. Of his RP patients, only 12 showed such dramatic improvement in vision in such a short time span. He is very optimistic that my vision will continue to improve and believes that I will not go completely blind at age 70 as previously predicted. We are praising God that He answered our prayers! Now, I can look at a Florida sunset, and know that is it not my last. The adventure continues...

Breakthrough technology converts phone calls to captions.

New amplified phone lets you hear AND see the conversation. The Captioning Telephone converts phone conversations to easy-to-read captions for individuals with hearing loss.

A simple idea… made possible with sophisticated technology. If you have trouble understanding a call, the Captioning Telephone can change your life. During a phone call the words spoken to you appear on the phone’s screen – similar to closed captioning on TV. So when you make or receive a call, the words spoken to you are not only amplified by the phone, but scroll across the phone so you can listen while reading everything that’s said to you. Each call is routed through a call center, where computer technology – aided by a live representative – generates immediate voice-to-text translations. The captioning is real-time, accurate and readable. Your conversation is private and the captioning service doesn’t cost you a penny. Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is regulated and funded by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is designed exclusively for individuals with hearing loss. In order to use CTS in your home, you must have standard telephone service and high-speed Internet

connectivity where the phone will be used. Callers do not need special equipment or a captioning phone in order to speak with you.

Hello grand ma this is kaitlynn ho w are you today I wa nted to tell you tha nk you for the birth day card

Finally… a phone you can use again. The Captioning Telephone is also packed with features to help make phone calls easier. The keypad has large, easy to use buttons.

“For years I avoided phone calls because I couldn’t understand the caller… now I don’t miss a thing!”

SEE what you’ve been missing! You get adjustable volume amplification along with the ability to save captions for review later. It even has an answering machine that provides you with the captions of each message. See for yourself with our exclusive home trial. Try the Captioning Telephone in your own home and if

you are not completely amazed, simply return it within 60-days for a refund of the product purchase price. It even comes with a 5-year warranty.

Do you get discouraged when you hear your telephone ring? Do you avoid using your phone because hearing difficulties make it hard to understand the person on the other end of the line? For many Americans the telephone conversation – once an important part of everyday life – has become a thing of the past. Because they can’t understand what is said to them on the phone, they’re often cut off from friends, family, doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks to innovative technology there is finally a better way.

Opinion

The Enduring Presence of the Founders Old rebukes to tyranny still refresh the love of liberty

H

istory casts important shadows that don’t fade with time. The year was 1774. The Declaration of Independence was still two years off, and liberty for those who called themselves Americans was far from inevitable. What all Americans recognized, however, was a simple truth. The imperial British government was, with inordinate haste, promulgating laws intended to snuff out provincial and individual liberty, aiming to shut down opposition to its central authority. Moreover, laws protecting individuals against that authority were suddenly going unenforced. The toxic mix — aggressive criminalization of formerly noncriminal acts and blatant nonenforcement of liberty-assuring laws — was more than unsettling. It created a wave of fear. It also awoke the sleepiest of early Americans, who saw it was not right. Thomas Jefferson took up his pen. He produced a short piece about basic rights, not the Declaration for which he would later be famous, but a little piece titled “The Rights of British America.” He hoped to convince the overreaching British government to pull back, show restraint, slow the juggernaut of oppression, and remember that sovereignty belongs to the people, not to a government. In his essay, Jefferson wrote that “unwarrantable encroachments and usurpations” were curbing basic liberties. He noted that, since the beginning of time, these liberties had belonged to individuals. He explained that “his majesty” had begun unilateral assertion of formerly legislative powers, and that the crown was undertaking imperial exercise of “wanton

by Robert B. Charles

power,” and that “rights of human nature are deeply wounded by this infamous practice.” Jefferson, in his inimitable way, noted that “this is so shameful an abuse of power trusted with his majesty for all purposes, as if not reformed would call for some legal restrictions.” He closed noting that “your majesty or your governors have carried this power beyond every limit known or provided for by the laws.” There he left it. Meantime, Benjamin Franklin had a word to say. He penned a piece in 1773 titled “Rules by Which a Great Empire May be Reduced to a Small One.” Among Franklin’s “rules,” in this sardonic parody, he listed what a government should do to properly alienate the people. He noted “a great Empire, like a great Cake, is most easily diminished at the Edges.” He suggested the king “contrive to punish” those who appeared to be “friends of liberty.” When appointees did something “odious,” the king should “recall and reward them with pensions,” putting them to pasture with profit. He suggests veterans be “harassed with novel taxes,” that the empire find ways to reduce “security in property,” and “remember to make your arbitrary tax more grievous for your provinces” than those at the seat of power. That was the last humorous piece Franklin wrote about the king. We inhabit a world that was once founded on the words of these great lovers of liberty. In this new world, we now find novel “encroachments and usurpations,” either by regulation, executive order or one-sided, vote-then-read legislation. We find growing confusion over the sanctity of individual liberty, with invasions of privacy, incursions into formerly sacrosanct constitutional rights in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 14th Amendments to our Constitution. We witness the criminal

investigation of seasoned reporters and celebrated moviemakers, gun banning, and selective political prosecution of future contenders to the throne. We find that state laws no longer matter, except when they excuse nonenforcement of inconvenient federal law or parts of the Constitution that the president does not like. We find that agents of the president, such as the Internal Revenue Service, go unpunished as former leaders are recalled, retired and rewarded with pensions. We see veterans who defended our liberty held in minimal respect, facing enormous delays in promised medical benefits, heaped with novel taxes and kept from seeing monuments to their service. All this is patently unsettling, even if we now live under a Constitution and electoral system that allows us to peaceably right a listing ship. Today, we need not make recourse to the only measure Jefferson, Franklin and early America had. The truth is that, because of their sacrifices and insights, we are today free to vote out leaders who act like kings and their legislative minions. It does help, now and again, to see how easily power rides up on the backs of those who feel unaccountable. If history does not exactly repeat itself, that is only because we have levers of a constitutional government to pull. The shadows from our Founding endure, reminding us why we feel ill at ease. That is why it is worth recalling the writings of the great men to whom we owe vigilance over our precious liberties.

Lend Me Your Ear! To me, a just picked, peak of the season, fresh ear of corn is the perfect summertime food.

B

eginning in July and continuing through the month of August, a stop at the local farmstand for a bag of Long Island corn is almost a daily occurrence. My family also loves the buttery, crisp, sweet taste of corn with all of their warm weather favorites. Rich in nostalgia and universally adored, corn on the cob is simply one of the best parts of summer.

Buy the freshest corn available and plan to use it the day it is purchased. Corn begins to lose its sweetness as soon as it’s cut from the stalk. Choose ears with cut ends that are spot-free and “silks” that are plentiful, pale and a little sticky. Husks should be bright green, tight and moist. Kernels should feel plump and be developed to the tip of the ear.

■ If you must store corn, wrap the huskon ears in a damp kitchen towel and place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. ■

Don’t shuck corn until it is needed. The less time that it is exposed to the air, the less time it has to dry out. Rub off any

stubborn silk by gently running a damp paper towel from top to bottom or rubbing with a soft toothbrush or vegetable brush. Break off the stem end or leave it on to use as a handle.

The best way to cut corn off the cob is to stand it up in the middle of a Bundt or tube pan. Hold the top of the ear and use a knife to cut down the sides while rotating the cob as you cut around it. The kernels will fall neatly into the pan. One ear of corn yields about ½ cup of kernels.

A simple and fun way to cook corn on the cob for a party: Place shucked corn in a clean cooler. Pour boiling water over the top of the corn (about 2 quarts per dozen). Close the lid and let sit for 30

minutes. Pull the plug to drain water, keeping lid closed. Corn will stay warm for about 2 hours.

An easy way to butter corn for a crowd: Melt a stick of butter and place in a wide mouthed jar. Add hot water to within two inches from the jar top. Submerge corn in the jar and pull out evenly buttered ears.

A delicious way to add flavor to cooked corn on the cob is to top with an herb butter. Combine a stick of room temperature butter with 1 Tbs. of lemon zest, 5 Tbs. of chopped herbs (chives, sage, thyme, basil, rosemary), ½ tsp. of salt and ½ tsp. pepper. Transfer to a sheet of waxed or parchment paper. Roll into a log and refrigerate until firm.

Kathie’s Kitchen Fresh Corn Pie ❏ 1 – 9 inch deepdish pie shell ❏ 4 eggs – lightly beaten ❏ 1¼ cups heavy cream ❏ 1 tsp. salt ❏ 1 Tbs. finely chopped onion

❏ 1½ cups fresh corn kernels ❏ 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ❏ ¼ tsp. paprika ❏ 1 Tbs. chopped parsley - optional

Preheat oven to 425°. Prick the bottom and sides of pie crust. Bake for 5 – 7 minutes or until firm, but not browned. Combine eggs, heavy cream, salt, onion, corn and cheddar cheese. Pour into pie shell. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°. Continue baking for an additional 30 minutes or until center is almost firm. Let sit for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired. Serves 6

Farmstand Corn Salad ❏ 6 ears of corn – kernels removed ❏ 3 small zucchini - diced ❏ 1 pint grape tomatoes - halved ❏ ¼ cup chopped fresh basil

❏ 2 Tbs. olive oil ❏ 4 Tbs. white vinegar ❏ 1 Tbs. honey ❏ 1 Tbs. fresh lime juice ❏ salt & pepper

In a large bowl, combine corn, zucchini, tomatoes and basil. In a separate bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, honey and lime juice. Pour over vegetables and toss to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 1 – 4 hours. Toss again before serving – adding salt and pepper to taste. Serves 8.

Fettuccine with Summer Corn Sauce ❏ 12 oz. uncooked fettuccine ❏ 4 slices thick-cut bacon – chopped ❏ 4 cups fresh corn kernels ❏ 3 garlic cloves – minced ❏ ¼ tsp. salt ❏ 1/8 tsp. pepper

❏ ½ cup grated parmesan cheese ❏ 1/3 cup blanched almonds ❏ 1/3 cup olive oil ❏ 1 cup thinly sliced basil ❏ 2 cups grape tomatoes – halved

Cook fettuccine according to package directions. Drain reserving ½ cup pasta water. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove and set aside. Discard all but 2 tsps. of bacon drippings. Add corn, garlic, salt and pepper to skillet. Cook until corn is tender. Remove ¾ cup of corn and set aside. Transfer remaining corn mixture to a food processor. Add cheese, almonds and oil. Process until blended. Return to the skillet. Add reserved corn and heat through. Add cooked fettuccine, three-fourths of the bacon and ¾ cup of basil. Gradually add the reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency. Add tomatoes. Transfer to a serving platter, and sprinkle with remaining bacon and basil. Serves 6.

How to Cook Corn on the Cob Boiled: Fill a large pot with water. Bring to a boil. Place shucked corn in the boiling water. Cover and cook for 5 – 7 minutes.

Oven Roasted: Place unshucked ears of corn on a baking sheet. Roast in a preheated 375° oven for 30 – 35 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before carefully removing husks.

Microwaved: Place unshucked ears of corn on a microwavesafe dish. Cook on high as follows: 2 minutes for one ear, 4 minutes for two ears, 5 minutes for three ears, 6 minutes for four ears. Allow the corn to rest in the microwave for 5 minutes. Remove husk and silk.

Grilled without the husk: Rub shucked corn with vegetable oil. Grill, turning occasionally, over medium heat for 7 minutes or until ears are lightly browned.

Grilled in aluminum foil: Wrap each shucked ear in foil along with a couple of ice cubes. Grill, turning occasionally, over medium heat for 10 – 12 minutes. As the ice melts, the steam created will cook the corn.

Grilled in the husk: Peel back the husks from each ear and remove silk. Pull husk back over corn. Submerge ears in cold water for 15 minutes. Shake off excess water. Place corn on grill and cook, turning occasionally, for 15 – 20 minutes. Carefully remove husk. www.amac.us | 47

t’s a problem no one likes to talk about, but over 25 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence. For those people, the problem is embarrassing, uncomfortable and can lead to a variety of other health issues such as skin irritation. Now there’s an adult diaper that fully absorbs the liquid and pulls it away from the skin leaving little opportunity for skin irritation, or other incontinence-related problems. Plus for many, a good night’s sleep uninterrupted, leak-free is the best news of all. Adult diapers have been on the market for years, but because most are sold to hospitals, where frequent changing is not an issue, they simply have not been designed to last through the night. Night Proofs™ Briefs are–and they do!

Rising to the Truth History shows the important role of Republicans in regard to civil rights. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed shortly after the Civil War and had Lincoln’s support. These amendments expanding the rights of American citizens were introduced by Republicans. In simplified terms, the goals were to abolish slavery, give citizenship and equal protection of laws to all persons born in the United States regardless of race, and provide the right to vote.

T

raditionally, black views tend to align with conservative ideology through shared core values, such as being pro-faith, pro-family, and pro-life. Many blacks oppose large government, wasteful spending and over-taxation and support entrepreneurship and innovation as means of economic growth. Today’s generation of Republican African-Americans recognize that the values they embrace are threatened. They are disappointed by historical misrepresentations and dislike the distortion of their party by Liberal media propaganda. This is igniting a political movement in conservative blacks to express their faith in conservative ideals and rise to the truth. Following is just a small sample of prominent African-American conservatives making a difference in America today.

BET also named her as one of ten Republicans to watch across the nation.

Goals: Henry champions Republican beliefs and promotes conservative values. She strives to ensure minority Republicans are represented on the ballot. As a young conservative, she serves as a role model for younger generation African-Americans and women.

Beliefs: Many Republican values align with Henry’s. This includes, but is not limited to, platforms of lower taxes, smaller government, upholding the constitution, national defense, free speech, and safeguarding religious liberties. RESTLESS LEGS?

Did You Know? After being emancipated at the end of the Civil War, former slaves became citizens with the right to vote gaining political representation for the first time, primarily in the Southern states. Beginning in 1870, during the Reconstructionist Era, seven black men were elected to Congress – one in the United States Senate and six to the House of Representatives. All were Republicans. The longest serving Congressman of these courageous men was Rep. Joseph Rainey representing the first district of South Carolina from 1870 – 1879. There have been a total of 139 African American members of Congress, mostly serving in the United States House of Representatives.

If uncomfortable sensations in your legs, accompanied by an irresistible urge to move, are keeping you from falling asleep, you may have Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Over 30 million Americans suffer from RLS and put up with the creepy, crawly, tingling or pulling sensations because they are not aware of this new treatment. MagniLife® Restless Legs Cream is formulated to allow for the absorption of specific vitamins and minerals that provide relief from those aggravating sensations. Infused with Lavandula Angustifolia and other essential oils for relaxation so you can get a good night’s sleep. No harmful side effects or risk of drug dependency. “You can imagine my surprise and delight when my legs kept still that very first night, and now every night since!.” – Dawn T., VT. MagniLife® Restless Legs Cream is available at Walgreens, CVS/ pharmacy and Rite Aid Pharmacy. Order risk free for $19.99 (plus $5.95 S&H) for a 4 oz jar. Get a FREE jar when you order two for $39.98 (plus $9.95 S&H). Send payment to: MagniLife RC-AM, PO Box 6789, McKinney, TX 75071 or call 1-800-605-0893. AGE SPOTS?

Are unsightly brown spots on your face and body making you uncomfortable? Age spots, also known as liver spots, affect the cosmetic surface of the skin and can add years to your appearance. Millions of people live with the dark spots and try to cover them with makeup, or bleach them with harsh chemicals because they are not aware of this new topical treatment that gently and effectively lightens the shade of the skin. MagniLife® Age Spot Cream uses natural botanicals, such as licorice root extract, to naturally fade age spots, freckles, and other age-associated discolorations. Other ingredients are proven to help protect skin from harmful external factors, and emollients soften and smooth the skin. “I’ve been using MagniLife Age Spot Cream for several months, and I can testify that it works! Thank you for this really wonderful natural product.” - Ella D., FL. MagniLife® Age Spot Cream can be ordered risk free for $19.99 ($5.95 S&H) for a 2 oz jar. Get a FREE jar when you order two for $39.98 ($9.95 S&H). Send payment to: MagniLife AC-AM, PO Box 6789, McKinney, TX 75071 or call 1-800-605-0893. Guaranteed results, or return the jars within 90 days for a full refund. Order now at www.AgeSpotSolution.com.

Let’s Talk

"Just the Facts…" Empower your children and grandchildren by opening a dialogue with them about marijuana What is Marijuana? Marijuana generally refers to the dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the Cannabis Sativa plant. This mixture typically is green, brown, or gray in color and resembles the appearance of tobacco. The major mind-altering chemical in Cannabis is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol).

How long does marijuana stay in your body? The speed at which marijuana leaves your body depends on several factors including the speed of your metabolism, the potency of the THC, and the amount of marijuana you smoke. Most commonly, traces of marijuana can stay in your saliva for up to 3 days, urine for up to 30 days, and your hair for up to 90 days.

Is marijuana addictive? Marijuana can be addictive. Not everyone who uses marijuana becomes addicted, but some users do develop signs of dependence. One study found that people who had used marijuana before the age of 17 were more likely to use other drugs and develop addiction problems later on.

by Pam Smith

Does driving under the influence of marijuana affect driving abilities? Yes. Even low doses of marijuana can impair driving motor skills. The drug significantly affects judgment, coordination, concentration and sense of time.

Be Informed Marijuana affects your brain. THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) affects the nerve cells in the part of the brain where memories are formed. Marijuana affects your ability to excel in life. Even at lower doses marijuana impairs attention and coordination and affects the way the mind processes information. Marijuana can negatively impact your athletic, academic, and work performance. It can add difficulty to your life while taking away the ability to care about and rectify it. Marijuana affects your health. Marijuana smoke deposits four times more tar in the lungs and contains 50-70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke does. Heavy marijuana use also has been linked with depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances. Marijuana is not always what it seems. Marijuana can be laced with substances such as PCP, formaldehyde, or codeine cough syrup without your knowledge. “Blunts” - hollowed-out cigars filled with marijuana - sometimes have crack cocaine added.

Before You Risk It… Know the law Marijuana use is illegal for people under 21. It is important to note that state marijuana laws do not change the fact that using marijuana continues to be an offense under Federal law. If you choose to use, the consequences to you (your teen) could be dramatic — legally, financially, reputation-wise, and time-wise.

Know the dangers Marijuana affects brain development, and when it is used heavily by young people, its effects on thinking and memory may last a long time or even be permanent. Regular marijuana use — once a week or more — actually changes the structure of the teenage brain, specifically in areas dealing with memory and problem solving. Shortterm effects of marijuana use include memory loss, distorted perception, trouble with thinking and problemsolving, and anxiety.

Know the signs How can your grandchild tell if a friend is using marijuana? One or more of the following may be a sign: • Seeming dizzy and having trouble walking • Having red, bloodshot eyes • Having a hard time remembering things that just happened • Acting silly for no apparent reason

Joke of the Month Three ladies were discussing the trials and tribulations of getting older. One said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand while standing in front of the refrigerator, and I can’t remember whether I need to put it away or start making a sandwich.” The second lady chimed in with, “Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.” The third one responded, “Well, ladies, I’m glad I don’t have that problem, knock on wood,” as she rapped her knuckles on the table and then said, “That must be the door, I’ll get it!” Heard any good ones lately? Send them in!

Please submit your joke by emailing info@amac.us or mailing to Joke of the Month, c/o AMAC 5 Orville Drive, Suite 400, Bohemia, NY 11716. Your joke may be featured in our next magazine!

Are you in love with your home but afraid of your stairs?

Why struggle up and down stairs when Easy Climber® can give you a lift? Easy Climber® is the easy, convenient and affordable way to get up and down your stairs without the danger and health risks. Remember the days when you woke up, jumped out of bed, threw on your clothes and ran down the stairs to greet the day? Yeah... me neither... that was years ago. Now, everyone from my doctor to my kids are telling me I need to avoid using my stairs. The problem is, I’ve lived in this house for years, and if I don’t use the stairs I either have to sleep in my family room or live in my bedroom. Why should I risk my safety just to get around? Then, a friend told me about an innovative solution, the ® Easy Climber . It’s basically a chair lift for your stairs... and it’s given me back my home. At the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, the company that makes the Easy Climber was inspired by the lift used in the Eiffel Tower and later created a lift of their own. In 1961 they introduced the first seated stair lift, and now they’ve taken their knowledge and expertise

Safety: Easy Climber features a swivel seat, and footrest that are powered to enable you to get in and out of the chair safely and easily. Sensors automatically stop it immediately if it hits an object. There’s even a EZ Clip buckle on the seat belt and no slip handles for added peace of mind. Quality and Simplicity: This company has been making these products for a long time– they do it right. This exclusive model features innovative design and quality components. It’s simple and reliable, with the least need for maintenance and repair. Warranty: This system is backed by Easy Climber exclusive limited lifetime warranty - the best in the business. Flexibility: Easy Climber is designed for easy installation on either side of the staircase. The seat-mounted controller can be placed on either side and the call/send controls can be mounted wherever you want them. When you’re not using it, simply park Easy Climber at the top of the stairs and out of sight.

and created the safest stair climber on the market today. Easy Climber has exclusive safety features and design innovations as standard equipment. This exclusive product was designed with one overwhelming goal: safety first. “At home or away, my wife can get help and I can worry less.” Ruth and I are still madly in love with each other, even after 49 years of marriage. She’s the most important person in my life. But I can barely keep up with her these days. She’s got her group of girlfriends, and they’re all very active, going to lunch, choir practice, aquarobics. Oh, and shopping! She’s always coming home with gifts for our grandkids. The problem is that I worry about Ruth when she’s out gallivanting around town. I suggested she get one of those medical alert help buttons, but she just plain refused. I wasn’t taking “no” for an answer, so I did some research on personal safety devices and came across 5Star Urgent ® ® ® Response by GreatCall. Unlike other devices, The 5Star has nationwide coverage, so it actually works at home and away from home. It was perfect for Ruth. Not only that, it’s the most affordable monthly fee I’ve seen – and believe me, I’ve looked. At only $1499 per month, we could save over $ 200 a year!

The friendly customer service representative I spoke with explained that The 5Star is not just for emergencies. He told me that in a variety of uncertain or unsafe situations, all she’d have to do is press the button and she’d be immediately connected to a highly-trained NAED Certified Response Agent who would confirm her location using GPS technology. Agents could connect her to a nurse, dispatch 9-1-1 services and get her the help she needs. She still seemed hesitant. I asked her, what if she was walking back to her car and thought someone was following her? What if our granddaughter Jenny got stung by a bee and had a bad allergic reaction while they were out? Or what about the time she witnessed that car accident? I told her she should carry it “just in case” and that she’d be able to continue living her life independently. Finally, I told her that it would make me happy and that I’d worry a lot less. And that’s what convinced her.

Why 5Star is simply the best:

What our fans are saying on Facebook:
