he cost of gasoline is hurting all Americans, especially seniors living on a fixed income. Higher fuel costs have caused an increase in the price of milk, bread, and meats as those supplies are transported by motor vehicles. The current administration seems unable to provide the leadership to help us. Amazingly, the Secretary of Energy, Dr. Stephen Chu, is on record as having told the Wall Street Journal that higher gas prices would help force Americans to use renewable energy. While renewable energy is a noble goal, it should not be achieved by costing us more money, especially during a deep recession. AMAC is devoting most of this issue to providing our members with facts and information about America’s energy situation, including the true story of our oil and natural gas reserves. Just prior to publication of this magazine, it was revealed that a district director at the Environmental Protection Agency said they were out to “crucify,” and make an example of, any energy producer that gave them trouble. This kind of targeting of individual companies by the government is deeply disturbing to AMAC. Just as the Federal Government singled out auto dealerships to be closed (many who had contributed to the opposition party), we find this practice to be highly dangerous and an attack on our freedom. You can be sure that AMAC will be vigilant in keeping watch on these threats to our liberty. Another cause for concern is the recent decision by the Department of Health and Human Services to attempt to violate the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of religion. They have issued a regulation that will force religious institutions to violate their tenets of faith by having to provide abortion pills to women, which is against their beliefs. AMAC believes if we accept the loss of religious rights, the loss of other rights will soon happen. So we are helping to organize an effort to “Band Together” to Protect our Religious Freedom by offering the sale of arm bands on our website. It is hoped many people will join with us to wear the arm bands on weekends as a sign of support for religious liberty. (Visit www.amac.us for more information.) Thanks to Patriots like you, our membership and influence continue to grow. God Bless America! Sincerely,

Dan Weber, Publisher

“Occupy” Movement Targets America's Youth

H

aving recently interviewed Stephen K. Bannon about his upcoming film, Occupy Unmasked, I found myself somewhat immersed in the literature of the Occupy movement. Years of working in education – as a teacher, Dean, and Student Adviser – instilled in me a heightened interest in academia, and I couldn't help but be drawn to a column titled "Step 1: Occupy Universities, Step 2: Transform Them" in the December 2011 issue of Tidal: Occupy Theory, Occupy Strategy. In that column, Conor Tomás Reed defines what the Occupy movement sees wrong with America's educational system: "Competitive individualized By Jedediah Bila learning, rigid demarcation of disciplines, shallow celebration of difference, grading systems that all-too-viciously distort self-worth – these are the pedagogical tools of the 1%." You see, competitiveness in the classroom, much like in the marketplace, drives ambition, highlights an individual's strengths and weaknesses, and very often births a passion to succeed. Success, in turn, means one student may rise above another in a certain discipline, may get a better grade than another, and may ultimately grow up to earn more money than another. It also means that young people who earn a bad grade or recognize a personal weakness may strive to be better, overcoming that obstacle to discover greater personal potential than they ever imagined. So, what's the problem? Well, an educational system where competition is allowed to thrive and drive one's appetite for success is antithetical to Occupy's reverence for collectivism and equality of outcomes. Occupy defines conventional grading mechanisms as vehicles "that all-too-viciously distort selfworth" because it detests the premise of personal responsibility. It abhors a system that highlights the power of the individual to shape his or her own destiny, and instead endorses one that features "...write-ins to produce

8 | www.amac.us

'People’s Dissertations' about the Occupy movement’s significance, with public writing times ... After each dissertation is created, we can hand out P(eople)h(ave)D(dreams) certificates en masse, thus rupturing the emblems of intellectual prestige." Occupy loathes that which highlights our differences – differences in drive and ability, aptitude for one thing over another, passion or lack thereof to be the best we can be. It can't tolerate our differences because they, and the individuality they represent, burst Occupy's collectivist bubble. According to Conor Tomás Reed, Occupy plans to take an active role in academia, "to occupy our schools with clear political purpose." And exactly what will that occupation look like? As Reed reveals, "...we would do well to incorporate Occupy Wall Street’s methods of discussion in our classrooms and communities. How often do we carefully strive to create consent about complex positions and concepts? We’ve been taught to theorize like starving hyenas – tearing the throat out of each other’s ideas. Instead, an interrelated educational community that listens to one another, repeating word for word if needed, can inscribe the social work of scholarship with a shared sense of critical construction." In other words, he advocates for "consent" over robust debate, for "repeating word for word" rather than challenging each other and articulating one's own ideas and opinions. Much like competition, differing opinions are Occupy's enemy. That which makes us unique yields a society where collectivism simply cannot flourish, a society driven by enterprise not guarantees, a society where one's failures have the potential to make you stronger not weaker, and where personal responsibility, not victimhood, prevails. In my conversations with young people in and around New York City, I have discovered that many have already embraced a movement which ironically seeks to devour their creative potential, their innate love of freedom, and their ability to reach great heights by virtue of nothing but their own personal hunger for success. It is imperative that we work actively to set the Occupy record straight. Always remember that a movement that captures our youth captures the future of our country. This is one battle we can't afford to lose.

Seven Auto Insurance Myths Your Insurance Advisor

W

hen purchasing car insurance, it’s important to understand the factors that affect your car insurance premium rates and coverage. But how do you differentiate between truth and fiction? A good place to start is by dispelling some common myths about auto insurance:

Myth 1 – Car Color determines the price of auto insurance It doesn’t matter if your car is red, green or purple. What does matter is the type of car you select. Before you buy a new or used car, check into insurance costs. Auto insurance premiums are based on make, model, body type, engine size, the age of the vehicle and the age, driving record and credit history of the driver. Premiums are also based, in part, on the car’s sticker price, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record, and the likelihood of theft. Many insurers offer discounts for features that reduce the risk of injuries or theft. These include daytime running lights and anti-theft devices. For years there has been a notion that color plays a significant part in calculating insurance premium costs, many people believing that red cars cost more to insure because they are linked to aggressive driving or speeding. The fact is, insurers have no interest in the color of a car, but they are interested in knowing if you have had any previous car accidents, the number of miles you drive annually and where you live.

Myth 2 – It costs more to insure your car when you get older Quite the opposite—many drivers over 55 years of age can, in fact, qualify for a reduction in auto insurance rates, typically for three years, if they have successfully completed an accident prevention course. Insurance companies will usually provide up to a 10 percent discount on car insurance, but check with your provider before you sign on. Mature driving courses are available through local and state agencies as well as through AMAC’s transportation comprehensive driver training portal provided by the National Safety Council. Plus, Travelers offers special program rates on auto insurance to AMAC members.

Myth 3 – Your credit has no effect on your insurance rate Your credit-based insurance score does matter. An insurance score is a measure of how well you manage your financial affairs, not your financial assets. Many insurance companies take your insurance score into consideration when you want to purchase, change or renew your auto insurance coverage. Because the majority of people have good credit, and insurance scores are derived from a person’s credit history, most people pay less for

10 | www.amac.us

insurance when insurance scores are entered into the pricing equation.

Myth 4 –Your insurance will cover you if your car is stolen, vandalized or damaged by falling tree limbs, hail, flood or fire Comprehensive and collision coverage are optional coverages. Lenders frequently require drivers to buy comprehensive and collision coverage as a condition of a car loan agreement. Those driving older cars sometimes drop these coverages as a way of saving money. If a car is worth less than $1,000 or less than 10 times the insurance premium, purchasing the optional coverages may not be cost effective. But bear in mind that you need to purchase both collision and comprehensive coverage in order to fully protect your vehicle from all types of damage.

Myth 5 –You only need the minimum amount of auto liability insurance required by law Almost every state requires you to buy a minimum amount of auto liability coverage. Chances are that you will need more liability insurance than the state requires because accidents often cost more than the minimum limits. In today’s litigious society, buying only the minimum amount of liability means you are likely to pay more out-of-pocket for losses incurred after an accident—and those costs may be steep. The insurance industry and consumer groups generally recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.

Myth 6 – If other people drive your car, their auto insurance will cover them in the event of an accident In most states, the auto insurance policy covering the vehicle is considered the primary insurance, which means that the owner’s insurance company must pay for damages caused by an accident. Policies and laws differ by state, and you should be familiar with these differences when allowing another person to drive your car.

Myth 7 –Personal auto insurance covers both personal and business use of your car If you are self-employed and use your vehicle for business purposes, personal auto insurance may not protect you. While auto insurance geared for businesses can be more costly than a personal policy, one of the best ways to keep your auto rates down is by having a good driving record. If there are others, such as employees, using your car make sure they also have good driving records. Check the records of your employee drivers at least twice a year to ensure they maintain a clean driving record. Macular Degeneration By Lev Shustarovich hen it comes to aging, little is more terrifying than losing your independence through the loss of your sight. A common cause of blindness in older adults is age-related macular degeneration (“AMD”). There are three stages of AMD: early, intermediate, and advanced. The most common form of macular degeneration is found in the early and intermediate stages and is known as the “dry” form. Dry AMD accounts for about 90% of all cases with the remaining 10% of cases composed of the “wet” form of AMD, which is the advanced stage. People suffering from both forms of macular degeneration will experience difficulty seeing directly in front of them. Activities such as driving, reading, or even watching TV become difficult because the sharp central vision needed to engage in these activities successfully will be blurred. In extreme cases, macular degeneration can eventually lead to blindness in one or both eyes. Permanent blindness is usually a result of the more aggressive “wet” macular degeneration. About 1.7 million Americans have some form of macular degeneration and it is now the leading cause of vision loss among Americans age 65 and over. Although there is no cure for macular degeneration, researchers have discovered several measures people can take to help prevent the onset of the disease and slow its development. A study done by the National Eye Institute’s AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS) found that taking a specific high-dose formulation of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduces the risk of advanced AMD and its associated vision loss.

W

According to studies done by the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, a high intake of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin in particular can decrease your risk of AMD by as much as 43 percent, while increasing macular pigment density (a crucial factor in visual acuity) by as much as 40 percent. The National Institute of Health (NIH) also concluded that taking a combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fish oil, copper, zinc, and the vitamins C and E will help protect your lens and retina from damage and support proper moisture levels for your eyes, resulting in a lower risk of developing AMD. Based on all these studies, it is clear that supplementation with vitamins is an essential step that can help delay and possibly prevent the progression of dry macular degeneration into the advanced stage where permanent vision loss occurs. Proactive steps can be taken to prevent and delay its onset. It is important to wear sunglasses when outside, avoid eating fatty foods, and stop smoking. Foods high in carotenoids such as cantaloupe, spinach, and carrots are great foods to eat on a regular basis. Eating a diet rich in lutein and fish oil, found in dark leafy vegetables and certain fish also supports optimal eye health. But most adults rarely get enough vision-optimizing nutrients through diet alone. Taking a daily vitamin that is high in lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega 3 fish oil provides essential nutrients to keep eyes healthy. AMAC, Inc. recommends that you always consult your personal physician before making any health care decisions. Article provided by Lipotriad. www.lipotriad.com

★ AMAC Op-Ed

Obamacare, Bad for Business

O

ver the past couple of months, a lot of attention in Washington and around the country has been focused on the Supreme Court as it considers the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or, Obamacare. Business owners have also been watching closely, if not nervously, because of the sheer implications that the law has on their ability to keep their doors open during these difficult economic times. Any business owner can tell you that the rising cost of health care has been one of their top concerns for years – but what has them really worried are the increased layers of cost, regulation and uncertainty stemming from Obamacare. Instead of making the problem of health care costs better, it makes it much worse. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Obamacare will reduce the labor force by 800,000 over the next decade and estimates that the cost to American businesses due to inability or failure to comply will be $52 billion. The last thing our economy needs are even more hurdles to job creation, yet that is precisely what the health care law represents. For a small-to-medium sized business, the prospect of having to comb through the 2,700 pages of Obamacare to figure out which of the $525 billion in taxes, or $26 billion in penalties, or hundreds of new regulations and mandates apply to them is daunting, to say the least. Is it any surprise that health care costs have risen already? 57% of employers nationwide say that health care costs have risen due to Obamacare, and in my home state of North Carolina, premium costs are projected to increase by 5.2% over last year’s costs.

18 | www.amac.us

By Steve Zelnak, Job Creators Alliance

The problem with Obamacare isn’t the purported purpose of the law – to reform our nation’s health insurance system – the problem is the way in which the law attempts to achieve its goal: bigger government, more bureaucracy and a top-down approach that is Washington-centered. What the Job Creators Alliance believes is that there are consumer-centered solutions that could bring free-market dynamics to bear in containing health care and insurance costs. Things like expanding health savings accounts, making health insurance portable or allowing health insurance to be bought across state lines are just a few common sense, modern reforms that would be important steps in the right direction. Regardless of what the Supreme Court ultimately decides, the need for real reform remains and the Job Creators Alliance will continue to advocate for an approach that does not dampen free enterprise or disincentivize economic growth – because we all want to leave our posterity with the same economic opportunities for prosperity that we’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy. Mr. Zelnak is a member of the Job Creators Alliance, a nonprofit committed to the defense of the free enterprise system, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and former CEO (1994-2009 retired) of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., and Chairman and majority owner of ZP Enterprises, a private firm founded in 2009, with three manufacturing companies that specialize in precision machining and coatings.

ever underestimate your competition. Just ask Demetrius, the unfortunate Greek general who set out to conquer Rhodes in 305 BC. He assumed that a massive force of 40,000 men, a fleet of Aegean pirates and an arsenal of wall-smashing war machines would be enough to crush the tiny Greek island. He was wrong. The Rhodians were tougher than he thought. And so is this watch. If you’ve always believed that the biggest, baddest watches had to cost big, bad money, the $49 Stauer Colossus Hybrid Chronograph is here to change your mind. A monument to toughness. The people of Rhodes were ready for Demetrius and repelled his attack. To celebrate, they built the Colossus of Rhodes, a 107-foot bronze and iron giant that towered over the harbor like a ten-story trophy. It warned future invaders that “Rhodes is tougher than you think.” You give the same message when you wear the Stauer Colossus. The timepiece that works twice as hard. In designing the Colossus Hybrid Chronograph, our instructions to the watchmaker were clear: build it as tough as a battleship and fill it full of surprises. Make it a hybrid, because it should work twice as hard as a regular watch. And make it look like a million bucks, because when you put it on, you should get excited about rolling up your sleeves. Mission accomplished. A toolbox on your wrist. It will keep you on schedule, but the Colossus Hybrid is about much more than time. The imposing case features a rotating gunmetal bezel that frames the silver, black and yellow face. You’ll find a battalion of digital displays on the dial arranged behind a pair of luminescent hands and a bold yellow second hand. Powered by a precise quartz

movement, the watch is doubly accurate in analog and digital mode. And it’s packed with plenty of handy extras including a bright green EL back-light for enhanced nighttime visibility, a tachymeter along the outer dial and a full complement of alarms and split-second countdown timers. The Colossus Hybrid secures with a folded steel bracelet that highlights a row of striking dark center links. It’s a rugged watch that’s more than ready for your daily grind. Your Satisfaction is Guaranteed. Wear the Stauer Colossus Hybrid for 30 days and if you are not 100% thrilled with your purchase, return it for a full refund of your purchase price. But once you get a taste of more watch for less money, it’s likely you’ll be back for more... and we’ll be waiting. Spectacular Treasure from Mount St. Helens

The Beauty in the Beast F

or almost a hundred years it lay dormant. Silently building strength. At 10,000 feet high, it was truly a sleeping giant, a vision of peaceful power. Until everything changed in one cataclysmic moment. On May 18, 1980, the once-slumbering beast awoke with violent force and revealed its greatest secret. It was one of nature’s most impressive displays of power. Mount St. Helens erupted, sending a column of ash and smoke 80,000 feet into the atmosphere. From that chaos, something beautiful emerged… our spectacular Helenite Necklace. Produced from the heated volcanic rock dust of Mount St. Helens, this brilliant green creation has captured the attention of jewelry designers worldwide. Today you can wear this 6½-carat stunner for the exclusive price of only $129! Your satisfaction is guaranteed. Our Helenite Necklace puts the gorgeous green stone center stage, with a faceted pear-cut set in gold-layered .925 sterling silver. The explosive origins of the stone are echoed in the flashes of light that radiate as the piece swings gracefully from its 18" gold-plated sterling silver chain. Today the volcano sits quiet, but this unique piece of natural history continues to erupt with gorgeous green fire.

Senior Spotlight on High Energy Costs… Is There Hope? by D.J Wilson

S

ince we were young, our parents preached that honesty is the best policy. Sadly, this guiding principle comes into question with our current government and its administration. While President Barack Obama is busy painting a warm and fuzzy picture of our nation, one can clearly see he is creating his version of a dream filled with surreal imagery. Let’s give him a reality check. An easy way to do that is to have him pump gas at a local station in your neighborhood. Perhaps he will see the shock and dismay on our faces as we attempt to fill our tanks and directly observe folks getting hit with a one-two punch. The first punch is obviously to our wallets. The second, liable to knock us off our feet, is the harmful and accompanying psychological blow of financial worry. To add insult to injury, the government claims no responsibility for the high prices you pay at the pump and the President washes his hands of all accountability. This is causing seniors nationwide to rise up in emphatic disagreement. Sick of Obama’s excuses, people are voicing their frustration. “It’s ludicrous”, says one senior I met at the pump. “My husband and I had two cars, but sold one to cut back on expenses.” Waving her hand in the air, she continued in disgust, “And now this. I can barely afford to fill my tank.” Kind enough to let me know a bit more, she explained her situation. “We live in a retirement community. I drive my husband to and from the doctor’s office three or more times a week. He needs to go and it’s

22 | www.amac.us

too far to walk, so I get just enough gas to get us through the week.” Curious if her community offered a reduced fee bus service, she rolled her eyes. “I’m perfectly capable of driving him; it’s just that these prices are killing me. I keep hoping they’ll go down.” Another senior I spoke with at the grocery store offered his insight. “No one seems to care.” He shared more. “The government wants us to feel weak and vulnerable, so they can swoop in with a big plan to take over and look like heroes. Look at what Obama wants to do with healthcare.” When I questioned his stance on big government, he replied “I can’t understand how losing personal freedom could ever be a good thing.” I pressed him further with questions on the energy crisis. “That is the fault of the government. We need to explore resources here at home and stop relying on foreign oil. Our dependency on other countries is crippling. It’s because we are failing to make ourselves energy independent.” Later, I bumped into a neighbor with thoughts to share on her pain at the pump. “I thought the government had some gas in reserve we could use to counteract the high prices. Where is it and why isn’t Obama using it?” This fifty plus year old added her personal story. “I’m still working and I have a steady income, but I worry about those who don’t, like my Aunt. Seniors need to get around and many may not have the money.” I asked who she holds accountable for the higher prices of gas. “It’s everyone’s fault. We need to elect the right person to fix the problem. Obama acts like he

6 Super Smart Tips to Save You Gas Money:

cares, but he doesn’t show it.” From these examples, it is clear folks are discouraged by the current lack of government response to the energy crisis. However, seniors are not without hope. I recently spoke with 76 year old John who shared some positive insight. Referring to Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, he said “I think Mitt can fix things. It may take some time but Romney’s a step in the right direction. I like him because not only is he in favor of funding research to find alternatives to solve our energy crisis, he'll do it with a thoughtful, business-like approach. We really need a Conservative in office who’s willing to carefully invest in new technologies and cares about America’s future. Anything we “With energy costs so do here will have a globhigh we may be al effect and the whole world will better off.” forced to cut back on When I asked him how spending, but I don’t much hope he holds for think it’s hopeless. the future, his response Sometimes people was swift and unwaverthink they can’t ing: “Oh, tons.” Another member make a difference, from New Jersey shared but they can...” positive thoughts on energy, discussing the future and importance of AMAC. “With energy costs so high we may be forced to cut back on spending, but I don’t think it’s hopeless. Sometimes people think they can’t make a difference, but they can. The best thing seniors can do is to come together to create one strong voice in order to be heard. AMAC is giving us that chance and it’s time Washington hears what we have to say.” Her husband added with a chuckle, “Yup, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Let’s squeak together through AMAC.”

➽ Car pool – We did it when our kids were young, so why not carpool as seniors? Sharing driving duty can make a big difference, saving gas money and reducing pollution, making it a win-win situation. ➽ Walk instead of drive – I’ve witnessed neighbors driving to other homes close to their own. Seems silly. If you’re not going far and you’re in good health, walking saves on gas and promotes healthy exercise. ➽ Use public transportation – If your community offers free or reduced bus service to seniors, take advantage of it. It’s a great way to meet others and can save you big bucks. ➽ Buy a fuel efficient car – If you’re in the market for a new car, think fuel efficient. Consider purchasing a smaller car instead of a larger one. Hybrids offer tax breaks, but beware of possible increased insurance costs. ➽ Plan your trips – Instead of running out multiple times during the day, run errands together. Be wise and efficiently map out your route in advance. A GPS can help you do this. Drive during off peakhours when there is less traffic. ➽ Fill up at less expensive stations – Not all gas prices are the same. Do your research. Consider joining a shopping club which offers discounts to its members, often including reduced gas prices.

ObamaCare and the Supreme Court

James Ressa says:

D. Steinbach

I am thrilled that AMAC will take on the govt. on behalf of the membership and all great Americans in the greatest country on earth! We can no longer sit back and think we will be ok! Step up Americans and let’s take our country back!

I sure miss my beloved America. Where oh where did it go? If anyone votes for Obama this next election, it will be a vote for socialism and Obama-Care, neither of which is acceptable if you want to call yourself an American! May God Bless This Country!!

M. Kvernen:

H. Endo

We must pray to God that the American people understand what is going on in our country since Obama was elected. We must have faith in God, pray to Him so we can keep our Religious Freedom alive.

People – Obamacare is only one of many ways the liberals and/or neo-cons are leading America into one world order, etc., etc. Vote wisely!

Chet:

I found Justice Kagan’s comments to be interesting. She believes that “Obamacare” represents a “pot-full-of-money” that the states should be excited about receiving. Her statement reveals a shallow thinking process that fails to understand from where that “pot-of-money” comes. The tax payer is already over-burdened and is not an infinite resource for funding these poorly thought out programs. She believes that the “pot-of-money” will “help the poor.” I believe that all of these Federal relief programs do not help anyone. These programs make it easy to remain poor and remove the incentive for individuals to improve their physical and spiritual condition. These are sad results and lead to horrible consequences

Take my word for it; if we keep on praying and acting on our conscience, these rallies will grow and get more numerous and powerful. The far left made a big mistake by thinking religion is dead in America. They have awakened a sleeping giant.

Robert Lesley: Thank God AMAC has gotten involved to help get this Nation back on track as our forefathers intend.

AMAC Chief Says ‘Drill, Drill, Drill’ Bob B: Obama says drilling won’t help. Then how come the price of natural gas has just gone to less then $6.00 per 1000 cubic feet in parts of Pennsylvania. 4 years ago it was $18.00 per 1000 cubic Feet.

Ray Mason: Yes our President gave a large chunk of our money to his buddies in South America, (hello Soros investments) to explore and drill for oil and at the same time refuses to issue permits for drilling and exploration in this country. He then assured them that we would be their best customers, after China of course. How do you spell traitor? Impeach, Impeach, Impeach!!!!

Pete

Cindy Lou: Right On. Thank you for being there for those of us Conservatives who are tired of AARP. They were one of the biggest supporters of Obamacare. They were supposed to represent their members but they sold them out.

Barbara Enea It will be interesting to see if our Supreme Court Justices are going to protect us and our constitution. If they don’t, we are doomed.

Tom Lauterback Thank you, AMAC. We senior citizens have too much at stake not to follow these deliberations, but the rest of the Americans had better pray that Obama's socialized medicine plan is consigned to the dustbin of history as well.

Government Energy Policy Debacle T

he summer season approaches, which America typically anticipates as a time of vacations, family get-togethers, and other outdoor activities. This year, however, the mood is being dampened by skyrocketing prices at the gas pumps. But while the increased costs of travel and motorized recreation are admittedly the most obvious and alarming signs of an energy problem, they reflect only one symptom of a much broader issue. Far more than merely curtailing leisure activities, the current energy situation negatively impacts the lives of Americans in countless ways. It guarantees that the stagnating economy of the last several years can never significantly recover, since the inevitable spike in energy prices accompanying any uptick in economic activity will immediately throw cold water onto a resurgent growth trend. As a direct consequence of the stifled economic landscape, Americans living on savings and investments will suffer. Aside from their decreased

spending power at the gas pump, and the resultant increase in the costs of every product that must be transported over the road to retail outlets, the overall yields of retiree “nest eggs” are failing to expand on the scale that was formerly projected. Instead, the growth of investment funds has significantly slowed, or even contracted. Hopes of the current generation of Americans to pass a brighter future on to their children are daily being shattered as the nation languishes in its current malaise with little or no sign of real improvement in the foreseeable future. Worse yet, a serious examination of major governmental initiatives reveals disturbing evidence that this situation may well have been purposely created, with the deteriorating outlook merely the result of deliberate efforts to undermine America’s ability to create and administer a sufficient energy supply. Under these conditions, it will be impossible for

The Obama Administration’s Energy Debacle continued from pg. 31

the Gulf. When the moratorium was effectively overturned by U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman, the White House responded by ignoring the court’s decision. Yet for those who might be inclined to find virtue in this course of action, a disturbing footnote should bring the situation into proper focus. Within a year of the BP spill and subsequent drilling/exploration moratorium which crippled the American oil industry, put thousands of Americans out of work, and prevented countless others from being hired in the first place, the United States lent $2 billion to the Brazilian corporation Petrobras, in order to finance its own offshore oil development efforts. On a visit to Brazil shortly before the “loan” was finalized, Obama enthusiastically asserted on behalf of America that “we want to be one of your best customers.” Of course the most glaring Obama attack on energy of recent months has been his venomous hostility toward the Keystone Pipeline. Originally slated as a means of transporting Canadian oil to refineries in the southern United States; every effort by the Republican controlled U.S. Congress to enable its construction were met with staunch opposition from the White House. In a pathetic eleventh hour attempt at damage control, Barack Obama made a speech in Cushing Oklahoma in which he ostensibly gave the “go ahead” to the pipeline, when in reality he only referred to the segment spanning the Texas/Oklahoma border. Meanwhile, the government remains steadfastly opposed to the link with Canada. As a result of this and other relentless efforts to restrict the flow of oil from America’s neighbor to the north, the Canadians have since opted to sell their oil to the Chinese. Interestingly, in a grossly underreported side note, that is precisely where Petrobras (the Brazilian oil company whose expansion was funded by billions of U.S. dollars) intends to sell theirs. On yet another front, the current administration has been methodically shutting down America’s coal industry, the repercussions of which will be no less disastrous than the attacks on petroleum. In keeping with his 2008 campaign promise to bankrupt America’s most abundant fossil fuel source, Barack Obama is working to establish EPA guidelines which would require

32 | www.amac.us

new coal-fired power plants to cut “greenhouse” gas emissions to unattainable levels. In short, if these regulations are implemented, no permits for new power plants will be issued. Consequently, bidding competition for available electricity will drive its cost to astronomical levels, dangerously curtailing the ability of average consumers, and especially those living on fixed incomes, to pay their monthly bills. So, it must be asked, just what could be the true motivation of such people to consistently and systematically pursue an agenda that harms America on so many fronts? Clearly, it cannot be a fear of eventual climatic catastrophe, which totally lacks the support of scientific evidence. And for those myopic champions of Barack Obama’s sincerity, even a cursory examination of his innumerable “family” vacations, often taken on multiple presidential jets, flatly refutes the notion that he holds any concern over an excessive “carbon footprint.” Unfortunately, the real answer is far more ominous. Why do so many Americans believe that Barack Obama has vehemently sought to reduce the standing of the United States? Some say his fawning bows to foreign leaders are not merely the diplomatic blunders of a novice in high office but rather deliberate projections of his belief that America holds no high position on the world stage. Obama's assertion that this nation consumes far more oil than its share of the world's petroleum reserves is constantly invoked as inarguable proof of a need to change course. It seems that in his mind, such usage of resources is somehow "immoral," despite the fact that during the past century, America was responsible for most of the development of those resources and has chiefly driven the world's economy. What Barack Obama seeks to achieve is the institution of a decidedly anti-American ideology. For them, the establishment of social, diplomatic, and economic “parity” with the rest of the world is the ultimate objective. And since this cannot be attained by elevating the corrupt and squalid nations of the world, the only alternative will be to cut the United States down to size. The lost jobs, reduced buying power, and other hardships inflicted on the American people merely represent “collateral damage” suffered in pursuit of the greater good. Nevertheless, America’s leftists foresee a silver lining in this cloud. Fewer productive workers in mines, oil fields, or on drilling rigs will most certainly be offset by more bureaucrats at the EPA and elsewhere in government. Such a scenario fortifies the state while relegating the private citizen to dependency, and consequently, subservience. This is the “brave new world” liberals have in store for America if they can hold the White House and retake the Congress this November.

Mr. President, Let Us Drill! America's Abundant Fuel Resources by Pam Smith

A

merica is blessed with huge quantities of fossil fuels. The responsible use of these resources has fueled our factories, homes, highways and hospitals since their first use. Vast amounts exist in untapped forms that hold promise for generations to come. Access to these energy resources and the discovery of new technologies to safely and cleanly use them is an ongoing challenge. Recent governmental decisions about the use of these energy resources has placed them out of reach of the American people, increasing our dependency on others for these supplies. Because much of our future potential supplies of fossil fuels exist under lands owned by the federal government, its decisions have a major bearing on how we live our lives. In 2008, in the midst of the highest gasoline prices in history, President Bush revoked the executive moratorium on offshore drilling, and Congress did not renew its ban on drilling for offshore oil and natural gas. However, while the Bush Administration put forth an accelerated schedule for leasing the Outer Continental Shelf’s oil resources, the Obama Administration is extending the comment period, delaying the ability for oil companies to purchase leases and to begin exploratory drilling. This type of policy by our current administration exacerbates our current economic problems, even though we have the answer to these challenges in our own backyard. Consider the following: • The amount of oil that is technically recoverable in the United States is more than 1.4 trillion barrels, with

the largest deposits located offshore, in portions of Alaska, and in shale in the Rocky Mountain West. When combined with resources from Canada and Mexico, total recoverable oil in North America exceeds 1.7 trillion barrels. • That is more than the world has used since the first oil well was drilled over 150 years ago in Titusville, Pennsylvania. To put this in context, Saudi Arabia has about 260 billion barrels of oil in proved reserves. The technically recoverable oil in North America could fuel the present needs in the United States of seven billion barrels per year for around 250 years. • Restrictions in the form of federal bans and leasing combined with declining offerings of lease acreage mean only about 2.2 percent of America’s offshore acreage is currently leased for production. • Proved reserves and recoverable natural gas quantities in the U.S., and throughout North America are enormous. The EIA estimates that the United States has 272.5 trillion cubic feet of proved reserves of natural gas. The total amount of natural gas that is recoverable in North America is approximately 4.2 quadrillion (4,244 trillion) cubic feet. • There is enough natural gas in North America to last the United States for over 175 years at current rates of consumption. • North American coal reserves are enormous, easily dwarfing those found in other countries around the world. The United States alone has the largest coal reserves of any country in the world, leading some observers to refer to the United States as the “Saudi Arabia of coal.” continued on pg. 36

My kids have been bugging me, my book group made fun of me, and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones are so small I can’t see the numbers, much less push the right one. They all have cameras, computers and a “global-positioning” something or other that’s supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren’t much help. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were complicated, confusing, and expensive…and the contract lasted for two years! I’d almost given up until a friend told me about her new Jitterbug® phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being able to stay in touch…with a phone I can actually use.” Sometimes I think the people who designed this phone and the rate plans had me in mind. The phone fits easily into my pocket, and flips open to reach from my mouth to my ear. The display is large and backlit, so I can actually see who is calling. With a push of a button I can amplify the volume, and if I don’t know a number, I can simply push “0” for a friendly, helpful operator that will look it up and even dial it for me. The Jitterbug also reduces background noise, making the sound loud and clear. There’s even a dial tone, so I know the phone is ready to use.

Affordable plans that I can understand – and no contract to sign! Unlike other cell phones, Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I’m never going to use? • North American recoverable coal could provide enough electricity for the United States for about 500 years at current levels of consumption. Oil and Gas Resources in the United States Currently, the government leases less than 2.2 percent of federal offshore areas and less than 6 percent of federal onshore lands for oil and natural gas production. Areas that the federal government could open to oil and gas development include: • The 10.4 billion barrels of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and 8.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. • The 86 billion barrels of oil in the outer continental shelf of the lower 48 states and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. • The 500 million barrels of oil in the Naval Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. • The 25 billion barrels of oil in the outer continental shelf of Alaska. • The 90 billion barrels of oil in the geologic provinces north of the Arctic circle 1,669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Coal Resources in the United States While coal is often maligned as the “dirtiest” hydrocarbon fuel, advances in technologies have dramatically reduced coal’s impact on air, water, and land. Since 1980, coal consumption has increased in the U.S. by 60%, while emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from coal plants have dropped 71%. • The U.S. has 486 billion short tons of technically recoverable coal out of a total resource base of more than 10,320 billion short tons of in-place resources. • The Powder River Basin, which also covers parts of Montana, is one of the world’s richest deposits of lowsulfur coal. The reality is that we have more combined oil, coal, and natural gas resources than any other country on the planet. We have enough energy resources to provide reliable and affordable energy for decades, even centuries to come. Yet, a scarcity of sensible government policy has led to soaring fuel prices and high unemployment rates. The solution is simple: drilling equals jobs and affordable energy rates. By allowing the hard-working people in the Gulf of Mexico to ply their trade, we can save 25,000 jobs. By allowing production in a small portion of ANWR, we can create over 250,000 jobs. By lifting the ban on new offshore drilling, we can create 1.2 million jobs. We must increase domestic energy exploration, expedite the permitting process, and remove the bureaucratic red tape and barriers on job creators. Producing domestic energy will create jobs across the country, increase revenue to the federal government, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Mr. President, do the right thing: "let us drill.” Data, and research provided by the Institute for Energy Research, www.instituteforenergyresearch.org

In our own backyard? A new poll, conducted by Harris Interactive, shows that 70% percent of American voters disagree with Barack Obama and favor increased access to U.S. oil and natural gas resources. Similar numbers believe more oil and natural gas development would provide major benefits to the nation, including creating jobs, reducing consumer energy costs, increasing the nation’s energy security, and delivering more revenue to the government.

NORTH AMERICA’S VAST RESOURCES... OIL Total Recoverable Resources: 1.79 trillion barrels.  Enough oil to fuel every passenger car in the United States for 430 years.  Almost twice as much as the combined proved reserves of all OPEC nations.  More than six times the proved reserves of Saudi Arabia.

NATURAL GAS Total Recoverable Resources: 4.244 quadrillion cubic feet.  Enough natural gas to provide the United States with electricity for 575 years at current levels  Enough natural gas to fuel homes heated by natural gas in the United States for 857 years.  More natural gas than all of the next five largest national proved reserves; Russia, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkmenistan.

COAL Total Recoverable Resources: 497 billion short tons.  Provide enough electricity for approximately 500 years at coal’s current level of consumption for electricity generation.  More coal than any other country in the world.  More than the combined total of the top five non-North American countries’ reserves: Russia, China, Australia, India, and Ukraine.

What To Look For in a Walk-In Tub: Five major considerations to help make an informed decision before buying a Walk-In Tub: ➻ Quality - A walk-in tub is a major investment. You want to find a quality tub that will last for decades. Look for one that’s 100% leakproof, mold-resistant, full metal frame construction and one that’s American made. ➻ Warranty - Ask for a lifetime “no leak guarantee.” The best tubs offer a lifetime warranty on both the tub and the operating system. ➻ Pain Relieving Therapy - Find a tub that has both water and air jet therapy to soak away your aches and pains preferably with a perfectly balanced water to air ratio. ➻ Comfort - Insist on ergonomic design, easy-to-reach controls. ➻ Endorsements - Only consider tubs that are ETL or UL listed. Also look for a tub tested to IAPMO (International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials) standards and that’s USPC (Universal Spa Plumbing Code) Certified.

Why are the Polar Ice Caps Melting? by Ed Farnan

A

The culprit is soot... not carbon dioxide

merica is the greatest country the world has ever seen and we have been blessed with natural resources which we have used to power our country and fuel the industrial machine that drives our economy. The great power and wealth America has been able to amass is almost directly attributable to unlimited quantities of cheap energy that power our industries, light our cities, and warm our homes. Today, we take it for granted that we can flick on the switch in our home and a light bulb instantly illuminates the dark. But the power used to make that light shine came with another price to be paid. It was a hidden cost that we had neglected to factor in when we were building our great industries; it was the environmental price tag. By the

38 | www.amac.us

early 1970s we realized that our industries billowing smoke over the countryside were not just a sign of great prosperity; they were also a sign of spreading pollution that threatened our health by fouling the air we breathed and polluting the water we drank. America had a great awakening to the fact that we needed to clean up our environment before our environment killed us. We embarked on an unprecedented decades-long war on pollution. Our national conscience saw concern for the environment being taken equally into consideration as the concern for our economy. Soon, stringent smog controls were mandated for cars, and smokestacks that used to spew out thick oily smoke

Why are the Polar Ice Caps Melting? from burning fossil fuels now had scrubbers and filters installed. These changes, and other technological breakthroughs, led to the once brown haze that used to envelope and choke our cities diminishing into relatively clear skies in many locations. Over the decades America has certainly made sweeping changes for the better in its environmental protection. We were able to afford the great expense of pollution control by absorbing the cost into our economy. The price tag for the technology used to clean up our environment wasn't cheap and that price has been reflected in the cost of the raw power we use. As the environmental industry grew in power, it found ever far-reaching goals to attain in eco-cleanliness. In this war on cleaning up our environment, a new deadly threat to our earth has been promoted by the environmental community: global warming due to manmade effects on the environment. This was a new science, jumped on by the environmentalists and championed by Vice President Al Gore. It had a steamroller effect on the country as charts and graphs were brought out to bolster this science. A shocking Academy Award-winning movie was produced and Global Warming became a cause celeb as the Hollywood culture embraced it. Al Gore, along with a new and growing legion of "climate scientists," told us the debate was over, Global Warming / Climate Change was a fact and it was settled science. Basically, they said, man’s carbon footprint on the earth was at the root of causing greenhouse gas, which was causing climate change. Countries were investing vast sums into new forms of "green energy," such as wind turbines and solar. Carbon taxes were proposed and enacted to reward green energy and punish fossil energy. This was not just designed to be a supplement to our energy needs, but a be-all and endall, in order to ward off certain climate catastrophe. But as the scientific community started to digest the facts and figures, a growing number of prominent and highly respected scientists around the world started to dispute the "settled science." These scientists organized into groups to proclaim they did not agree with the underlying science behind the "greenhouse gas theory,” and offered their own scientific data to support their side. Dr Alun Hubbard, leading a British research team from the universities of Swansea and Aberystwyth, has been studying Greenland's ice sheet, which holds 10% of the world's freshwater reserves. Dr Hubbard's team has been doing seismic testing, dropping explosive charges beneath the ice, to try to understand why its rate of reduction has tripled in the last ten years. The ice in the camp is pock-marked with black cylindrical holes, spread out across the surface like swiss cheese; these are formed by Cryoconite, or industrial soot particles blown from around the world onto the

Arctic ice. "What you see in there is a bunch of particles of aeolian dust... and black soot and just particles that are in the air caused by industry or combustion engines," explained Dr. Hubbard. "Because they are dark in color, compared to the ice that surrounds it, which is white, they absorb more of the sunlight and a lot more of its energy, which creates a positive feedback and so they effectively drill down into the surface of the ice sheet." Their findings show that the increased rate of melting is due to soot particles, not climatic warming. Others in the scientific community pointed to the fact that the earth has gone through severe climate changes over hundreds of thousands of years. They have been able to analyze data from ice core samples going back thousands of years and the growth rings in petrified ancient trees and fossils of now extinct species. Many existing deserts around the world were once not deserts at all, but lush fertile regions that have eventually become arid over periods of time, not measured in hundreds, but in thousands of years. All of these environmental facts happened long before mankind became an organized mechanized force on this earth and able to figure out that we could burn oil and coal to power our cities and cars. Additionally, our earth was a vastly different environment thousands of years ago, when Manhattan was covered in ice one mile deep. The Russians just recently drilled through 2.5 miles of ice in the Antarctic to reach a 14 million year old fresh water lake. What secrets from the earth’s past lie locked in its untouched depths? What could have spurred the massive climactic changes that brought us the ice ages? Many science scholars have argued that mankind has the ability to affect the earth’s climate by the production of greenhouse gasses, but many others look back on the past and point to the fact that great climactic upheavals have occurred on earth long before mankind was here. But that doesn't negate other scientific findings that pollution may be having a negative effect on our environment by unbridled use of coal and oil-fired energy plants in the developing world. The developing countries in Asia have seen the advances of the west and have modeled their economies to compete with us on a large scale. Moving from agrarian societies, they are quickly transforming themselves into industrial giants. Factories and gleaming modern cities spring up everywhere; their economies are growing at an incredible rate. They are becoming the manufacturing base of the world as they have been a magnet for multi-national corporations who seek to exploit their cheap labor and in many cases, nonexistent environmental controls. The economic engine that is powering these booming manufacturing-based economies is fueled by burning coal and oil. But unlike the west which learned about the pollution caused by the use of these fuels and made continued on pg. 40

www.amac.us | 39

Why are the Polar Ice Caps Melting? changes necessary to clean up its environment, these developing countries are woefully behind. As a result, many of their cities are smog choked with rivers so polluted you dare not dip a finger in the water. The burning of coal to fuel the power plants that produce the electricity of these countries is causing environmental concerns and problems outside of their borders. One country without environmental control for its pollution will pollute the country with the most stringent of environmental protections. Asia’s burning of fossil fuels with little protection from the raw pollution emanating from their smokestacks is dispersing pollution around the rest of the earth. But you really don't need a scientist to tell you something is wrong when you see great swaths of ice in the Arctic polluted with soot from factories operating in foreign countries with practically no environmental controls. This can't be good for our earth, no matter what the scientists figure out... and no matter how much profit multi-national companies make by operating in countries that abuse the environment. Obviously, we have a world-wide pollution problem,

continued from pg. 39

and while we all agree that something has to be done to curb the problem soon, the answers do not lie in preventing the development of our vast energy resources, hobbling our economy, causing massive transfers of wealth from the U.S. to other countries, or the loss of jobs and liberty. Mankind is no match for the age-old forces that heat and cool our planet. Yet, in the face of enormous odds, we have a history of perseverance and success. American innovation and ingenuity has served us well for hundreds of years, and these tools will take us, and the rest of the world, far into the future, unless shackled by the constraints of an unrealistic government.

Exploring Ellis Island and the Tenement Museum

by D.J Wilson

N

ew York City is undeniably one of the most exciting cities in the world. Noted for iconic attractions like Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Saks Fifth Avenue and the Statue of Liberty, many visitors flock to the city once the chill of winter passes. Others enjoy New York year round due to its fast paced environment, with an overabundance of upscale shops, ethnic areas, Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, and exciting art and science museums. While all these are quite fabulous, it is necessary to add two places to the must-see list. They are so important; they should be listed as number one and two on the list, in no particular order. No proper trip to New York City is truly complete without a visit to these two places, the historic Ellis Island and the unforgettable Tenement Museum. Known as America’s Golden Door, over 12 million immigrants passed through the doors of Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954, in hopes of finding a new life in America. Immigrants also came into other cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco, Savannah, Miami and New Orleans. They came escaping persecution, war

and hunger or to seek opportunity in a land offering hope for the future. It is estimated that the descendants of those who immigrated account for almost half of the American people. As these ancestors of America arrived in the New York Harbor, many faced a three to seven hour inspection process. 1st and 2nd class citizens underwent a cursory inspection on board instead, unless they were ill or had a legal issue. 3rd class citizens were treated differently. Often arriving seasick and ill after facing crowded and unsanitary conditions on the ships, they were transported by ferry or barge for medical and legal inspection. While for many it was the beginning of dreams, this “The Island of Hope” became the “Island of Tears” for some who were denied entries and were separated from family. A trip to Ellis Island offers an amazing glimpse into the passage of millions of immigrants who came to America. Together, their stories make up the essence of Ellis Island and their journeys shall not be forgotten. Hear the 45 minute audio tour designed to share moving tales of those who settled in America. The Big Chill I

CE CREAM is America’s hands down all-time favorite confection. Children stop crying and adults grin in anticipation when offered this irresistible treat. There is something about the cold sweetness of ice cream that comforts and soothes as few other foods do, and you'll be surprised at the delicious desserts that can be made with ease just by dressing up a simple, inexpensive carton of ice cream. This store-bought item serves as a ready-made base for any number of cakes, pies, sandwiches and bars. Prepare one of these tasty endings this summer, and you’ll be rewarded with smiles all around. • When buying ice cream, don’t buy a sticky container – it may have been refrozen. Ice cream should be the last item you purchase and the first item you put away. • Store ice cream in the coldest part of the freezer - not on the door. • To prevent ice crystals from forming when taking ice cream in and out of the freezer, cover any open container with plastic wrap. Press directly onto the surface before

closing the lid. • Save minutes (and your poor wrist) by trading in an ice cream scoop for a knife. Remove the cardboard container of slightly softened ice cream. Place ice cream on a cutting board. Cut it into portion size pieces. • For greater ease when slicing ice cream cake or pie, use a long straight-edged knife dipped often in hot water. An electric knife also works well. • When entertaining a crowd, pre-scoop ice cream balls several hours before serving. Place them evenly on a wax paper lined baking sheet, or place individual scoops in a cupcake tin lined with paper baking cups. Cover with plastic wrap and store in the freezer for 2 hours or until needed. For an extra special treat - roll the balls in coconut, nuts or sprinkles before freezing. • Create a simple and delicious Peach Melba dessert – scoop vanilla ice cream into chilled glass bowls. Top with canned peach wedges and raspberry syrup. Voila! • Prepare attractive parfaits – in tall, clear glasses, alternate layers of ice cream with toppings such as chocolate chips, coconut, chopped nuts, crumbled

Top with whipped cream and a cherry. • Make your own ice cream sandwiches - Place a ¼ cup of softened ice cream on large, sturdy store-bought cookies. Top with additional cookies, and press down gently until the ice cream comes to the cookie edges. Roll the edges in sprinkles or candy bits. Place sandwiches on a baking sheet. Store in the freezer until ready to serve. • Add an element of creativity and fun to your event by allowing guests to help themselves at an ice cream sundae buffet bar. ★ Did You Know? Scientists Denounce NASA’s "Unproven Remarks" on Global Warming Fifty top scientists, astronauts and engineers who have worked for NASA are attacking the space agency’s stance that manmade carbon dioxide is responsible for global climate change. Seven Apollo astronauts and the deputy director of the space shuttle program are among the experts who have signed a letter to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. The letter begins: “We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS that manmade carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled." The signees charge NASA with advocating an “extreme position” on climate change “prior to a thorough study of the possible overwhelming impact of natural climate drivers.” They conclude: “At risk is damage to the exemplary reputation of NASA, NASA’s current or former scientists and employees, and even the reputation of science itself.”

NY Times Religious Bias The New York Times is being accused of having a double standard when it comes to questioning religion, after it ran an ad calling on Catholics to leave their church, but nixed an ad making the same plea to Muslims. The newspaper published an ad from Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation on March 9 which asked Catholics, “why send your children to parochial schools to be indoctrinated into the next generation of obedient donors and voters?” But when Pamela Geller, executive director of Stop Islamization of America, offered the same $39,000 for the Times to run an ad making a similar appeal to Muslims, the newspaper declined to publish the ad.

Most Americans get enough vitamins and nutrients Here's some good news about Americans' diets: Most of us are getting sufficient amounts of key vitamins and minerals. That's the finding of a report just out from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. Vitamins A and D, folate, iron and iodine are just a few of the nutrients assessed in the nationwide survey, which uses data collected between 1999 and 2006. Overall, less than 10 percent of the population appeared deficient in each nutrient. "These findings are a snapshot of our nation's overall nutrition status," says Dr. Christopher Portier. "Measurements of blood and urine levels of these nutrients are critical because they show us whether the sum of nutrient intakes from foods and vitamin supplements is too low, too high, or sufficient." Nutrient deficiencies are linked to all kinds of health problems, including heart disease, poor bone health and cancer. But the report cautions that just because we're eating our vitamins, it doesn't necessarily follow that Americans are eating as healthfully as they should. "The low deficiency rates ... are encouraging," lead researcher Christine Pfeiffer says in a press release, "but higher deficiency rates in certain age and race/ethnic groups are a concern and need additional attention."

Oil and Natural Gas Industry America’s oil and natural gas industry supports over 9 million American jobs and contributes to 7.7% of our nation’s GDP. It generates more than $86 million a day to the federal government while having an effective tax rate nearly double the average for all industries. In 2010, it contributed more than $470 billion to the US economy – more than half the size of the 2009 stimulus package.

Occupy Wall Street – The Zuccotti Park Government Connection Less than a week after Occupy Wall Street protesters took to Zuccotti Park, Brookfield Renewable Power, a subsidiary of Brookfield Office Properties whose holdings include Zuccotti Park, received a loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy. Making this sequence of events even more interesting is the fact that the sister-in-law of John Podesta, President Obama’s influential White House transition director, served as the lobbyist for Brookfield Renewable Power while pursuing the government loan. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has also raised eyebrows as it turns out the mayor’s longtime domestic partner, Diana Taylor, is on the Board of Directors at Brookfield Properties. Connections such as these lead one to wonder about President Obama’s endorsement of the OWS protesters and Mayor Bloomberg’s lengthy delay in allowing the NYPD to evict the protesters.

Fiscal Fiasco At a time when America is in a fiscal crisis and every taxpayer dollar must be used efficiently and effectively, it is shocking to learn where some of our tax dollars have been going. Following is a just a sampling of outrageous government expenditures. Exporting Elmo: The U.S. Agency for International Development provided $10 million to a Pakistani arts organization to adapt “Sesame Street” for Pakistani toddlers. O Christmas Tree: The U.S. government spent $74,000 last year to help the state of Michigan “increase awareness about the role Michigan plays in the production of trees and poinsettias.” Michigan’s $40 million Christmas tree industry already ranks third in the nation. Tips for India: The National Science Foundation wants to help politicians in India do a better job. It awarded a $426,000 grant for research to determine the effectiveness of communications to citizens from officeholders. The U.S. sent $126 million in aid to India last year, even though it is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Jobs for Barbados: While the U.S. unemployment rate has been over 8% for three years, that did not discourage the U.S. Agency for International Development from spending $1.35 million on an “entrepreneurship initiative” for the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. Spend it Like Beckham: You're also footing the bill for a new soccer field for Guantanamo Bay terrorism detainees to the tune of $750,000. The new recreational center is specially constructed so that detainees will have access 20 hours a day. This is in addition to two "already existing" recreation fields.

Consumers dump cable and satellite for invention that pulls in free TV with no bills Slick little $47 invention pulls in up to 953 free TV shows with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills U.S. RESIDENTS

If you live in one of the U.S. zip codes below call the special 7-day hotlines to get Free TV channels

(UMS) – The Free TV Hotlines are ringing off the hook. That’s because U.S. residents who call the Toll Free Hotlines before the 7-day order deadline to get the amazing razor-thin invention called Clear-Cast™ can pull in up to 953 free TV shows each year with crystal clear digital picture and get rid of cable and satellite bills . This is all possible because a U.S. federal law makes TV broadcasters transmit their signals in a digital format, which allows everyone to receive these over-theair digital broadcast signals for free with no monthly bills. These are the over-the-air broadcast signals that the cable and satellite companies get and then re-transmit to you for a hefty charge every month. Here’s how it works. The ClearCast’s advanced patent-pending design links up directly to receive all the free local and national shows being broadcast. This allows everyone to bypass the cable and satellite middleman to pull in all the free over-the-air channels with crystal clear digital picture; then you can eliminate all the cable and satellite only channels and never pay a bill again. Clear-Cast was invented by Dr. Argy Petros, a renowned NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame scientist who currently holds 22 U.S. Gov’t issued patents. “There’s never a monthly bill, you get all the free channels with Clear-Cast and you won’t pay for hundreds of channels you never really watch. So it’s like comparing apples and oranges since Clear-Cast is not cable or satellite. Clear-Cast pulls in up to 53 free over-the-air broadcast channels and 953 free TV shows each year with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills,” Dr. Petros said. “That’s why Clear-Cast is such a great alternative for everyone who is sick and tired of paying expensive cable and satellite bills every month,” he said. “You see, with Clear-Cast you’ll receive free over-the-air broadcast channels with crystal clear digital picture, not the cable or satellite only channels. So being able to eliminate those channels puts all the money you were spending back in your pock-

et every month,” Dr. Petros said. The number of shows and channels you’ll get depends on where you live. People living in large metropolitan areas may get up to 53 crystal clear channels, while people in outlying areas will get less. That means even if you’re in a rural area that just pulls in NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and PBS broadcasts there’s up to 953 shows each year to watch for free. Thousands of U.S. residents who find their zip code listed today will be calling to get Clear-Cast because it just doesn’t make any sense to keep paying for TV when you can get hundreds of shows absolutely free. So, if lines are busy keep trying, all calls will be answered. N

N NEVER PAY A BILL AGAIN: U.S. residents will be on the lookout for their postal carrier because thousands of Clear-Casts will soon be delivered to lucky residents who live in any of the zip code areas listed below.
