“Sound Off” Retirees Will be Hurt Most by Dividend Tax Hike Paul E says: This is standard socialism. It starts by attacks on one class, in this case those that Obama has targeted as “rich”, in order to gain acceptance of the majority who think his policies won’t affect them. Then over time, as has been the case in every other country where socialism has been tried and failed, the target for additional taxes moves downward on the economic scale. The definition of rich will be modified to be $150,000, then $100,000, and so on until it is just above the $30,000 number the Democrats seem to think is the sweet spot for their voter base.

Eric says: Just remember, when the so called “rich” get taxed, we will all get taxed – indirectly. They will not absorb this tax. Companies can’t afford to absorb exorbitant expenses. It will be considered an expense of doing business and will pass onto the price of the products produced, which are then passed along to the consumer for us to pay. Or they will be forced to cut major expenses, which are employees. The worst case scenario is that the company closes its doors because it can’t compete.

Philip says: The Federal Tax increases fund entitlement programs such as Family Assistance, WIC, HEAP, Medicaid, Section 8 housing and much more. These recipients do not pay anything into the program, unlike SSN and Medicare where recipients have worked for years and contributed to their benefits. But the 800 pound gorilla in the room is the hyperinflation and monetary devaluation possible when there are no more buyers for our bonds. Then all will be in trouble, especially seniors no longer able to “work their way” through the crisis.

Larry H says: Whatever happened to “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” That about half of wage earners are not paying any federal income tax is just mind blowing. You also hear about some super wealthy who don’t pay any taxes. I’d like to suggest a Minimum Income Tax based on the Adjusted Gross Income on the bottom of your 1040 page 1. If it’s less than $100K, the tax would be 1%. For each $100K increment, the tax rate would rise 1%, until you got to 10%. On 1040 page 2 where you compute your tax, that rate would be reduced by the rate you paid on page 1. There would be no deductions that would apply to the Minimum Tax… everyone would be paying something… sounds fair to me!

True conservatives will be disinclined to throw money and support behind candidates who will only sell out their interests later, and liberals will vote for the true liberal, not the GOP approximation. Protecting Healthy Debate The word “purge” has come up on Twitter, Facebook, and in right-wing media circles quite frequently these past few months. I have seen social conservatives call for purging social moderates from discussions, moderates call for purging conservatives they define as extremists, supporters of gay marriage call for purging traditional marriage proponents from debates, and pro-life advocates insist there should be no room for pro-choice conservatives on the right. The language has sometimes been ugly, and the instinct to shut down healthy debate has emerged from some unexpected voices. My immediate response: You can’t accuse the Left of having no respect for diversity of thought or healthy debate by Jedediah Bila while calling for a purging of disagreement on the right. You either support a forum where individual opinions will sometimes differ and issues are robustly and respectfully debated, or you don’t. In late December, I watched an interview CNN’s Piers Morgan conducted with Larry Pratt, the Executive Director of Gun Owners of America, on the topic of gun control. They clearly disagreed - and that’s okay, that’s what these forums are for - but Morgan was nasty, rude, and completely unprofessional. He used the phrase “idiots like you,” and at one point, said the following: “You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?” It was appalling. I watched many on the right rush to condemn that horrific behavior, as they should have, but was left bothered by something. For months, I had watched some of those same folks on the right rush to name-call, block those expressing respectful disagreement on Twitter, and shut down debate. It just wasn’t good. As a libertarian-conservative, I detest political ideologies that strip people’s individuality, freedom of thought, choice, and opportunity. Most of all, though, I detest collectivism. I have worked in academia and witnessed the way some on the left shut down debate. Classrooms that are supposed to be hubs of intellectual diversity and thought-provoking discussions turn into propaganda seminars where dissent is the enemy. It turns my stomach. I take issue with all those who aim to stifle free thinking and rush to purge, rather than discuss, differences. When it comes to those I disagree with on key points, I don’t need them to be silenced in order for me to make my voice heard. Differences of opinion remind us that we’re all still individuals--independent-minded, thinking individuals, not preprogrammed robots. I understand the frustrations of many on the right with politicians who appear to stand for nothing, who can’t be counted on to keep their word, and who are often big-government, tax-and-spend advocates masquerading as limited-government activists. I get it, and believe me, it makes me mad. However, the answer is to call those particular people out and hold them accountable for their records and deceit, not to stifle debate or mimic the collectivism of some on the left who have no room for intellectual independence. Every day, we define who we are and what we value through our actions and words. The purging of dissent is something I have seen far too often from the Left. I, for one, hope it becomes less and less common from the Right. ★

What Everyone 50 Years Old Must Know

eorge Burns once said “you can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old!” Those of us who are in our 50s and 60s, well, we’re looking pretty darn good. But have you thought about whether or not you’re safeguarding your health? Addressing a handful of health risks at mid-life can profoundly affect your future, and while none of us wants to think about a time when we can no longer live independently, we should recognize that the good news is, much of how we live out our later years in life is within our control.

Safeguarding your health ■ Smoking. Smoking increased the likelihood of a nursing home admission by 56% in the younger group and by 32% in the older group. ■ Inactivity. Among those ages 45 to 64, physical inactivity boosted the risk of entering a nursing home by 40% (although it had no signiﬁcant impact at older ages). ■ Obesity. In the 65-to-74 age group, obesity increased the risk by 31% (although it had no signiﬁcant impact at a younger age). ■ Diabetes. Among those ages 45 to 64, diabetes more than doubled the risk of eventually entering a nursing home. ■ High blood pressure. High blood pressure also increased the risk, by 35% in the 45 to 64 group and by 29% in the older group. These problems contribute to many chronic illnesses that can cause disability and death as we age, including heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. The effect was even greater when risk categories were combined. For example, diabetic smokers in the younger group were five times more likely to enter a nursing home than people the same age with no risk factors.

What to do Taking steps to address these five factors could reduce not only the risk of a future nursing home admission but also the chance of premature death. Fortunately, most are within our control.

ting. We all know that smoking is bad for health, but here’s a quick reminder of how bad: it’s harmful from before birth to the end of life, raising the risk of cardiovascular

disease, cancer, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

✔ Become more active. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking ﬁve

days per week reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes; lowers blood sugar levels; decreases depression; and helps activate genes that clear fat and sugar from the bloodstream.

✔ Improve your diet

through some simple changes. Add more servings of dark green, red, orange, or yellow vegetables or fruits to your daily intake, with a goal of reaching nine servings per day. And switch to healthier fats: skip trans fats, choose fewer saturated fats, and get more healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils and omega-3 fatty acids). Plant oils, nuts, and ﬁsh are all good sources.

✔ Get your blood pressure under control. Exercise regularly,

don’t smoke, and consider adopting the classic DASH eating plan, a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and low in red meats (and other sources of saturated fats), sweets, and sodium (salt). ✔ Talk to your doctor about bone mineral density (BMD) testing. All women ages 65 and over should have their BMD tested. If you’re at high risk for osteoporosis, your clinician may recommend screening at an earlier age. Be sure to get adequate calcium (1,000 to 1,200 mg per day) and vitamin D (800 to 1,000 IU per day).

Depression is another risk factor for nursing home admission. A 2007 European study that analyzed information from 11 countries on adults ages 65 and over receiving home care services found that the more severely depressed a person was, the more likely she or he was to be admitted to a nursing home. There are several possible explanations. “Game Changer” in Prostate Cancer by Gerry Hafer

early a quarter million men were expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012, up by nearly a thousand over the previous year. For males over the age of 50, particularly those with a family history that includes prostate cancer, the odds of developing prostate cancer are greatly increased, making it something that needs to be in the forefront of everyone’s quest for good health. The American Cancer Society projects that roughly 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with this disease in their lifetime. Prostate cancer trails only lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in men. What is of particularly great consequence is the fact that some people with prostate cancer will not display any of the common symptoms. However, there is a promising bright side. Although prostate cancer is clearly a serious disease, the survival rate is relatively high, with the American Cancer Society reporting a five-year survival rate of nearly 100%, largely as a result of breakthroughs in the area of early detection. One of these advancements has been termed a “game changer” by medical professionals, and is exhibiting the potential for radically changing the landscape for diagnosing and pinpointing prostate cancer in situations where prior tools and active surveillance (digital examinations and abnormal prostate-specific antigen [PSA] levels followed by biopsy) were unsuccessful in finding cancer cells. The breakthrough that has caught the attention of the medical world is a technological approach that combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with computer-aided detection (CAD) software to produce highly targeted biopsies. These higher resolution images make it easier for physicians to pinpoint cancer cells, particularly in areas of the prostate that have been historically difficult to biopsy. It’s called VividLook, developed and marketed by New Hampshire-based iCAD, Inc. A major provider in the production of cancer detection technologies for over 10 years, iCAD holds over twenty patents in advanced image analysis systems used by medical professionals to pinpoint cancer earlier in the diagnostic cycle. In concept, the VividLook approach is an extension of MRI technologies that have been around for some time, but the interjection of CAD takes much of the guesswork out of the process by identifying more precisely the location of cancer cells. The “needle-in-a-haystack” conditions often facing clinicians are replaced by VividLook’s localized, highly precise images that guide the biopsy process. Through this technology, the need for multiple biopsies, sometimes as many as 12, has been greatly reduced

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is beginning to examine these banking practices with an eye toward making safeguards available to consumers. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to protect yourself, like proactively declining overdraft protection, balancing your checkbook more frequently, linking your checking account to a savings account, using budget alerts (many banks offer low balance alerts), or pre-arranging an overdraft line of credit at a competitive rate. Special Election Periods ■ People with Medicaid, a Low Income Subsidy and people who are institutionalized in a facility such as a long term care hospital or skilled nursing facility can make changes to their plans all year round ■ People who qualify for a Special Election Period can also enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan all year round but are subject to speciﬁc timelines to enroll into a new plan. ■ Some examples of Special Election Periods are if you move out of the plan’s service area, or if you involuntarily lose health insurance coverage. Easy Eddie and Butch O’Hare An Unlikely Tale of Crime and Patriotism

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Butch O’Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning he saw something that turned his blood cold. A squadron of Japanese Zeroes was speeding their way toward the American fleet. The American fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn’t reach his squadron and bring

Story #1: Easy Eddie Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn’t famous for anything heroic; he was notorious for enmeshing the city of Chicago in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Easy Eddie was Capone’s lawyer and for a good reason; his skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. Yes, Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddy did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddy saw to it that his young son had the best of everything - clothes, cars, and a good education. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Yes, Eddie tried to teach his son to rise above his own sordid life. He wanted him to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things that Eddie could not pass on to his beloved son: a good name and a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Offering his son a good name was far more important than all the riches he could lavish on him. He would try to clean up his tarnished name and offer his son some semblance of integrity by testifying against The Mob and Scar-face Al Capone, and he knew that the cost would be great. But more than anything, he wanted to be an example to his son, make restitution and hopefully have a good name to leave his son. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie’s life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago street. He had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer at the greatest price he would ever pay.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wingmounted 50 calibers blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch weaved in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until finally all his ammunition was spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the Zeroes in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible and rendering them unfit to fly. He was desperate to do anything he could to keep them from reaching the American ships. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Butch O’Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival he related the event surrounding his return. The film from the camera mounted on his plane showed the extent of Butch’s daring attempt to protect his fleet. He was recognized as a hero and given one of the nation’s highest military honors. And today, O’Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. What do these two stories have to do with one another? Well, you see, Butch O’Hare was Easy Eddie’s son. What do you like best about being conservative?

No, I was never a liberal. I joke with my parents that I popped out of the womb as a libertarian-conservative. Reagan always made sense to me; Carter never did. I was really lucky growing up because I was surrounded by different political ideologies in school and at home. Liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and everything in between were often at my dinner table. I had the chance to listen to political discussions, hear all sides of the story, and figure out what I believed in. Big-government policies, high taxes, and class warfare just never hit home with me. I like promoting freedom and the right of people to make decisions for themselves about their own lives--what they eat, whether they have health insurance, and more. I love talking to kids about opportunity, self-reliance, and personal responsibility. I have always found it empowering to know that how hard I work, what goals I reach for, and how ambitious I am with respect to those goals are up to no one but me. As a libertarian-conservative, I embrace

policies that let me do those things without the heavy hand of the federal government in my way.

How does liberalism hurt women?

I think any political ideology that promotes dependency hurts women, while also hurting men, children, and society at large. When the Obama camp released their Julia campaign during the 2012 election season, I was horrified to see cradle-to-grave government assistance for women glorified. Many “feminists” also rushed to lend their support. It was a disgrace-condescending to the abilities of women to care for themselves without the help of government and a slap in the face to founding feminists who fought long and hard for women’s equality and the notion that women are capable, intelligent, independent decision-makers.

Q Are conservatives losing the battle for the hearts and minds of Americans? A

In a sense, they are. However, it’s not because the conservative message is outdated; it’s because the conservative approach to delivering that message is outdated. They need to be unafraid of markets like reality television that appeal to kids, forums like coffeehouses and down-to-earth settings that young people flock to, and left-wing campuses where the conservative message is grossly outnumbered. Outreach matters and is completely different from the pandering often engaged in by the Left. Also, the quality of messengers is key. We need charismatic, energetic, positive messengers who have the ability to excite people and convey constitutional principles in a way that is both accurate and engaging. These things aren’t easy, but they are necessary to change hearts and minds.

What led you to your current profession?

I actually fell into this by accident. A couple of years ago, I was working as a teacher and Dean in a Manhattan private school. I watched the 2008 presidential election play out and was shocked by the level of media bias. I remember hearing a story from a family friend about voter fraud and being moved to write a blog post about it continued on pg. 32

in 2009. I immediately got a flood of mail. That led to writing columns online, TV appearances, and everything you see just a few short years later. What led me to this profession most, beyond the desire to take on media deceit, was the desire to give people honest, talking point-free commentary. I’m not a Republican strategist, nor am I interested in propping up a machine or defending a party at all costs. I’m really here to tell you what I think, to give you an honest take on the issues, and to take on corruption, bad policy, and lying politicians no matter where they fall on the political spectrum.

What do you like to do to relax?

I love fitness, so boxing, boot camps, long runs, lifting weights, wall climbing--I’m up for them all on a Saturday afternoon. I love delicious, healthy food, and having a best friend who is an amazing cook has been a gift from God. Let’s just say I spend a lot of time stuffing my face. I also adore music, so I love searching for new artists. Sarah McLachlan is my favorite, but there are so many I adore. You can typically find me on a Sunday afternoon writing journal entries or fiction while folksy tunes dance through my iPod speakers. Analytical writing has its place in my world, but creative writing is where I’m most myself.

What is your favorite location in the United States? Why?

This is a tough one, so let me give you a few places I love before I answer your exact question. I adore Amherst, Massachusetts, which I discovered with an old love many years ago. Small New England towns with winter cottages and charming shops always have me at hello. South Beach, Miami is my favorite place to put my toes in the sand and dance through the night. San Diego, California has a way of calming my body and mind that I can’t explain. However, my favorite place in the United States would still have to be Manhattan, which I’ll always call home. Growing up in New York City was probably the biggest gift I’ve been given of all. Not just because I’ve been surrounded by rich culture--museums, bookstores, art galleries, poetry readings--but because this place really builds a strong backbone. There’s a fearlessness about native New Yorkers that I love, a hurried energy, a desire to get things done yesterday, and an amazing endurance. Yes, it can be exhausting and all-consuming to live here. My friends visiting from other states often ask me how I get used to my mind and body running nonstop. I never have a good answer, to be honest. However, it’s a good exhaustion, the kind that comes from unique projects and cultural journeys and, yes, crazy taxicab adventures. Truth be told, no matter where I wind up, I’ll always be a New Yorker. I’ll likely be a little tough sometimes, but I’ll get you where you need to go. And quickly.

Never. At the 1980 election night party at our high school, there was exactly one table out of approximately 30 for Reagan. I was there dancing and whooping it up--gloating among all the Carter kids when Reagan was declared the victor. Never did I think I would actually work in the Reagan White House. My first political memory was how I felt sitting in our Volkswagen station wagon in a Carter-era gas line on a hot day with my mom. I thought, this seems really senseless and annoying. That pretty much describes how I have felt about liberalism ever since.

It is a false promise--government can’t be daddy, mommy and perpetual caretaker. The promise of “liberation” sounded good -- but by the time liberals had their way, equal opportunity had morphed into political correctness, entitlement mentality, and affirmative action. Policies aren’t “compassionate” and neither is government. Our money is too often squandered on programs and plans that end up actually hurting families sustained by women working inside and outside the home. The free market offers opportunities for women that a government commission never could. Liberalism has too often viewed capitalism as an enemy to be vanquished, or at least tamed into submission. Q What can we do to increase the visibility of conservative values? A

We need great story-tellers, better communicators who are unafraid to take the conservative economic and cultural message beyond our natural supporters to potential voters in the inner city, on college campuses, and throughout blue states. Conservatives have largely abandoned the culture, leaving it to be monopolized and dominated by left-leaning talent. This was a crucial mistake. The same has happened in social media. I think Mitt Romney would have been a good president, but he had a less-than-impressive social media strategy, as well as a generally uninspired media strategy. This must change in the coming election cycles. Conservative thinkers should be eager to debate anyone at any time on any subject important to the country politically and culturally.

What are the most satisfying aspects of your job?

Speaking with the American people, hearing their concerns, having listeners approach me to say how much the show means to them, helping businesses grow by advertising their products and services to a phenomenal listening audience. Also, maybe most important, I love knowing that I make people laugh. (Even liberals who are laughing at me!) Over the years, I am blessed to have interviewed and spent time with members of our armed forces (active duty and retired). Interviews with them were some of my favorite segments. Maria is horse crazy so we do what we can to read about horses, see horses, and ride when we’re lucky enough to do so!

I was a libertarian while in utero, but after being born I found out how the real world works and quickly became a conservative. Not having to spend all my time ruining everything for everybody. Q When did you first realize your conservative preferences? Both of my parents were conservatives, so the philosophy was always present and being fully absorbed. I think the first time I was really aware of my conservative ideology was when Ronald Reagan was president. I was pretty young at the time, but every time I heard him speak on limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, economic freedom, and a strong national defense, I just knew instinctively that what he was saying was correct; that it was the path the Founding Fathers had laid out for this country, and the path that had led it to superpower status in a very short period of time. It wasn’t until later that I understood WHY Reagan’s views were correct, but once I did, I also understood that it was the philosophy that made America not just a great nation, but a good one as well.

Conservatism is THE place to be, because it embodies the great foundational principles on which this nation was built---ordered liberty and economic freedom---and because after decades (in fact, centuries) of empirical evidence, we know conservatism in all its forms (limited government, free markets) works. It is the only philosophy that has repeatedly and constantly delivered extraordinary human liberty and prosperity. No other philosophy even comes close.

Q Are conservatives losing the battle for the hearts and minds of Americans? A

It’s a tough time for conservatives: the hard left controls the presidency and the Senate, and the progressive agenda is on the march, being forced through via legislation and executive action. But we’ve been through dark days before, and we’ve come through previous challenges stronger and more formidable than before. The key is in fearless and charismatic leadership, in folks who are unafraid to articulate and fight for conservative principles. But that’s not enough. We need grassroots mobilization, a kind of community organizing of our own. We need those who believe in liberty and free markets, smaller government and less regulation, and economic freedom to fight and win at the local level as well as at the state and national levels. We also need to start to move the culture, which has long been controlled by the Left, and we need to take on the media, most of which has been incredibly corrupted. It’s a tall order, but we can do it, because I still believe we’re a center-right nation, and most of us are still dedicated to the American idea.

Nestled at the base of the picturesque San Jacinto Mountains, the City of Palm Springs is lined with palm trees, boutiques, art galleries and museums. Residents and tourists count themselves blessed to experience Palm Springs. The lovely village atmosphere and mid-century modern architecture have been deeply preserved. The world famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers breathtaking views of the area, soaring to the top of Mount San Jacinto. Constructed on the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon on the north edge of Palm Springs, the Tramway was the dream of electrical engineer Francis F. Cocker. Choose ground meat which contains some fat. This will produce a juicier, tastier meatball. Leaner meats have a tendency to dry out while cooking. For a ﬁrmer meatball, use bread crumbs as a ﬁller. For a softer meatball, use crustless bread soaked in milk or water.

In a bowl, combine the eggs, onion, bread crumbs and salt. Crumble beef over mixture; mix well. Shape into 1 ½ inch balls. In a large skillet, brown meatballs in batches in oil. Transfer to a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish. In a saucepan, combine the tomato juice, brown sugar, gingersnap crumbs, vinegar and onion salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until cookie crumbs are dissolved. Pour over meatballs. Bake uncovered in a 350 degree oven for 40 – 45 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through. Combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, Italian seasoning and pepper; spread over bread. Sprinkle with ½ cup of mozzarella cheese. Combine sauce, water, garlic and meatballs; spread over cheese mixture. A 1 ½ inch meatball, about the size of a golf ball, is ideal. Much larger meatballs tend to fall apart, and can cook unevenly – overcooked on the outside, undercooked on the inside.

To create meatballs of equal size, try rolling the meat mixture into a long log about 1 ½ inches in diameter. Cut into 1 ½ inch lengths. Shape each piece into uniformly sized balls.

★ Obamacare Watchdog Health Care Reform Tax to Hit Consumers, Employers in All 50 States The new health insurance tax included in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will increase the cost of health care coverage for consumers and employers in every state, according to a new state-by-state analysis conducted by Oliver Wyman for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). The ACA imposes a new sales tax on health insurance that starts at $8 billion in 2014, increases to $14.3 billion in 2018, and will continue to increase each year. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that the health insurance tax will exceed $100 billion over the next ten years. The health insurance tax will increase costs for individuals and families purchasing coverage on their own, small businesses, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, and Medicaid managed care programs. AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens, strongly supports legislation (H.R. 1370, S.1880) that would repeal the tax. Side Effects: Seniors Will Lose Big Under Obamacare From the Heritage Foundation

Passage of Obamacare will have negative consequences for practically all Americans. However, it is the nation’s senior citizens who will get the short end of the stick due to the enactment of the President’s health care agenda. Heritage health policy expert Robert Moffit, Ph.D., lays out the specific provisions of Obamacare that will hurt seniors: ■ Less Choice. Obamacare puts 15 unelected bureaucrats in charge of meeting a budget target in Medicare with its newly created Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). IPAB may be statutorily prohibited from directly rationing care, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ration indirectly by reducing provider payments for certain medical procedures, which can compromise physician autonomy in the delivery of care. In fact, the only way IPAB can control costs is by reducing provider payments. But cutting payments effectively rations care by limiting Medicare beneficiaries’ access to providers. ■ Reduced Access to Care. With the retirement of 77 million baby boomers beginning in 2011, the Medicare program will have to absorb an unprecedented demand for medical services. For the next generation of senior citizens, finding a doctor will be more difficult and waiting times for doctor appointments are likely to be longer. The American Association of Medical Colleges projects a shortage of 124,000

doctors by 2025. Obamacare does nothing to reverse this worrisome trend, instead making it worse. ■ Fewer options. Obamacare delivers a strong blow to Medicare Advantage (MA), which allows seniors to receive Medicare benefits from a private health plan of their choosing. MA is popular among seniors—about 25 percent of beneficiaries are in the program—and in 2012, premiums fell by 7 percent and enrollment increased by 10 percent. But Obamacare cuts the program by $145 billion, which, according to the Medicare Actuary, will decrease enrollment by 50 percent by 2017. Furthermore, Heritage research shows that after Obamacare is fully implemented, MA beneficiaries will lose an average of $3,714 worth of benefits per year by 2017. ■ Medicare Payment Cuts. Obamacare’s irresponsible cuts to provider payments will cause 15% of Medicare Part A providers to become unprofitable within the next 10 years, according to the Medicare Actuary. As Medicare providers begin to operate at a loss, they will be unable to stay afloat, leaving seniors with less access to care. Woman Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison for Theft of Social Security Benefits Judy L. Dinsmore, 58, of Rogersville, TN, was sentenced on November 19, 2012 by the Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, U.S. District Judge, to serve 30 months in prison. Dinsmore pleaded guilty in May 2012 to a federal indictment charging her with theft of Social Security benefits. Dinsmore admitted that she arranged to have Social Security Administration deliver 347 monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for a deceased relative to her home, for 29 years after the relative died in 1982. She accepted the checks, forged the endorsement of the deceased relative on each one, and cashed the checks at a business in Greeneville, TN, representing she was the named payee. In 2004, Dinsmore was sentenced to serve five months in federal prison after entering a guilty plea to a similar scheme for a different deceased relative. The total loss caused by Dinsmore to the Social Security Administration is estimated to be approximately $250,000. Further information can be found at www.oig.ssa.gov. A fundamental principle of American immigration policy has long maintained that individuals and families trying to immigrate into the U.S. must first prove they are financially stable enough to do so, in order to prevent them from becoming a burden on the social welfare system. But today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is openly defying this policy by encouraging new immigrants to exploit the system for all it is worth, even though they are not legally eligible for government assistance in most cases. The official “Government Benefits” page posted at the DHS - run WelcometoUSA.gov explains that new immigrants should try to apply for federal benefit programs because they may be eligible depending on their immigration status, length of stay in the U.S., and income level. What it does not explain, however, is that many new immigrants are not even legally eligible for such assistance, despite information plastered across the site that makes it seem as though government handouts are ready and waiting for new immigrants the minute they arrive on U.S. soil. Though the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) claims the DHS-operated website is merely meant to provide greater access to information about government benefits, some lawmakers are concerned that the page facilitates new immigrants signing up for government programs they are not even eligible to receive. And because there are no checks and balances in place to properly sort out who is truly eligible, many foreigners are now receiving all sorts of government services illegally. “One of the important points about the legal problems with the DHS site and materials is not only the issue of immigrant eligibility, but the fact that U.S. immigration officials are obviously granting visas to those they believe will and should be receiving government assistance,” wrote a Republican Budget Committee staffer about the issue. “Immigration law is supposed to operate so that individuals at risk for being placed on public assistance are not admitted in the first place.”
