Annual Fund 2012–13

Sidney’s Progress

The last year has been one of change and renewal here at Sidney, and nowhere has this been more evident than in the very fabric of the College. In addition to the new MCR and the six new student rooms which now comprise the upper half of 30 Sidney Street (the old Galloway and Porter shop) we embarked on several building projects across the College this summer. We have created two new seminar rooms in Chapel Court and four in Jesus Lane, as well as undertaking some much needed maintenance work to South Court and Cloister Court. The old seminar rooms in Sussex House have now been converted into nine new student rooms. You will also be pleased to read that the Fellowship continues to grow and develop

and the talents of our Fellows are increasingly being recognised in the wider University. Paul McHugh, Department of Land Economy, has been promoted to the position of Professor, Erika Eiser, Department of Physics, to the position of Reader, and Michael Ramage, Department of Architecture, to the position of University Senior Lecturer. Additionally, Mark Gurnell, a Bye Fellow of the College and Director of Studies in Medicine, has been promoted to the position of University Senior Lecturer. In July, we will be saying farewell as Master to Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill who recently announced his intention to step down to play a more active role with his work at Herculaneum. He also takes up the position as Director of Research in the Faculty of Classics here in Cambridge and will remain a Fellow at Sidney. October 2012 saw the first cohort of students matriculate at Sidney who are part of the revised fee system. Much debate has ensued about the new fee structure but what is certain is that were it not for the support of Sidney’s alumni and friends we would not be able to offer bursaries to offset some of the financial burden of the increased fees. In the last year alone our donors have helped to create almost ten new bursaries which will be awarded this year. I would like to thank you all for your continued support. Last year more individuals than ever before made a gift to the College and even the smallest gift can have a significant impact when many individuals join together in support of Sidney. In 2011–12 we raised nearly £500,000 for the Annual Fund and I am confident that with your support in 2012–13 we will be able to surpass the achievements of last year. Professor Richard Penty Acting Master

Making a Difference

One of the strengths of the collegiate system is its sense of community; it is this which makes Sidney such an inspiring and fulfilling place to be. Through the Annual Fund we are committed to nurturing this diverse community to ensure it reaches its goal of all round excellence, whether in the exam hall, part of ground-breaking research or on the sports field. The College has identified three key priorities which the Annual Fund will support: • To attract and support the very best students irrespective of their financial background • To continue to provide personalised teaching with high levels of supervision by research-active scholars • To enhance our students’ experience by providing excellent facilities and supporting a wide range of activities including student societies, the Sidney Sussex College Choir, music and performance, sports and travel

“Gifts to the Annual Fund support a wide variety of projects with an immediate and lasting impact on our students – from the upgrade of key student facilities to the “Sidney Greats” lecture series. They also make a direct contribution to keeping Sidney, and Cambridge as a whole, at the forefront of excellence.” Max Beber, Senior Tutor

In the 2011–2012 financial year* with your help we raised £490,000 for the Annual Fund with over 650 alumni and friends making a gift to Sidney. In particular, we were delighted by the support that the telephone fundraising campaign received with £158,000 being pledged specifically to the Annual Fund over a two week period. One of the most important aspects of the Annual Fund is its flexibility. It allows the College to direct funds towards areas in most urgent need during the year, whether that is providing additional student support above what we already plan for, covering shortfalls in supervision costs or maintaining the very fabric of the College. As a result of gifts to the Annual Fund in 2011–12 we were able to fund a number of projects at Sidney. *1 July 2011 – 30 June 2012

Projects supported by the Annual Fund in 2011–12 • Providing a number of hardship grants to both our undergraduate and graduate students. • Supporting a teaching position in History held by Dr Bernhard Fulda as part of our dedication to highly personalised teaching through the supervision system by researchactive academics. • Part-funding Dr David Doupe’s Junior Research Fellowship position in Natural Sciences. • Supporting the “Sidney Greats” lecture series organised by Fellows in English with the aim of introducing foundational texts and ideas to the whole College community. • Creating nine new student rooms in Sussex House. • Relocating the MCR from Chapel Court to above what used to be the Galloway and Porter book store in Sidney Street.

Other ways to Support Sidney

Remembering Sidney in Your Will A gift in a will can be one of the most meaningful ways in which to make a gift to the College and ensures that your generosity will continue to benefit future generations of Sidney students for many years to come. A gift in a will is also an increasingly tax-efficient way of making a gift to Sidney. Alumni and friends who remember the College in their will are invited to join the Lady Frances Sidney Circle. Named after the College’s founding benefactor, the Circle was established to recognise the generosity of those who pledge a legacy to Sidney. Leadership Gifts Alumni and friends of Sidney who wish to make a significant philanthropic contribution to the College are asked to contact the Development and Membership Office. We are particularly keen to encourage gifts directed towards student support and our wider access initiatives, funding teaching positions at Sidney, and the provision of first class facilities for the benefit of our students.

1596 Foundation The 1596 Foundation allows us to recognise the contributions of Sidney’s most generous benefactors and in doing so creates a very special bond between the College and its most loyal supporters.
