A gift in a will is also an increasingly tax-efficient way of making a gift to Sidney. Sidney’s Progress
It was a great honour for me to be elected as Sidney’s 27th Master and there is much to report since my admission in July. Our biennial summer Arts Festival was an eclectic mixture of professional and amateur musicianship and dramatics. In August, the College hosted 55 talented sixth-form students at our second Summer School, designed to give them an insight into study and life at Cambridge. Clive Wilmer and Edward Wilson-Lee have capitalised on the successes of their Sidney Greats lecture series and I am already looking forward to the new
Making a Difference
series of events which include talks on Einstein and Descartes. Our MCR ran its first annual conference on our graduate students’ research. None of these events and activities would have been possible without donations to the Annual Fund. For the year ending June 2013, nearly 600 alumni made a gift to the College, with over £200,000 being given to the Annual Fund for unrestricted purposes to support our students, teaching and facilities. All of us at Sidney are so grateful for these generous gifts and appreciate the real difference they make in helping Sidney achieve its aims and our students make the most of their time here. There has been much debate in the national press about the new tuition fee structure which started in 2012–13. What is certain is that were it not for the philanthropic support of Sidney alumni and friends we would not be in a position to be able to offer as many bursaries to offset the financial burden of these increased fees to our less well-off students. As a result of the generosity of our donors we awarded 15 new named undergraduate bursaries and supported 49 student bursaries in total this year.
Attendance at the summer schools was free for all the participants, thanks to generous support from a number of Sidney alumni and friends who supported the Annual Fund. The events received enthusiastic feedback: “I thought it would be intimidating, but I have realised that the University and people are very welcoming. The students and professors are passionate about the subjects they do, which is reassuring and inspiring.”
Through the Annual Fund we remain deeply committed to providing a comprehensive package of support for those in financial need so that they are able to fulfil their potential here at Sidney. The three key priorities for the Annual Fund are:
• To attract and support the very best students irrespective of their financial background • To continue to provide personalised teaching with high levels of supervision by research-active scholars • To enhance our students’ experience at Sidney by providing excellent facilities and a wide range of activities including student societies, Sidney Sussex Choir, music and performance, sports and travel

As part of our access initiatives, Sidney ran a Summer School for 55 sixth-formers. Students participated in a science and engineering programme which saw pupils taking part in lectures, lab classes and supervision-style teaching in the University departments. We also organised an Arts, Humanities and Social Science programme which included sessions on ‘How to do things with poems’, a workshop with books and manuscripts from the College archives, a taster class in Chinese, a seminar on European Monetary Union and a topical seminar on the politics of the crisis in Syria.
Making a Gift
I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities, including Sidney Sussex College, that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 28p of tax on every £1 that I gave up to 5 April 2008
