RHYS EDWARDS DIRECTOR OF

RUGBY

Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host our good friends Stourbridge. Welcome to all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby. Our previous encounters over the years have always been a festive feast of rugby, and today I’m sure won’t disappoint.

We enter the Christmas break full of cheer, even though results haven’t necessarily gone our way. We are playing a good brand of rugby and if we aren’t picking up 5-point wins, we are losing with double bonus points which is all we can ask from the players.

Today’s guests, Stourbridge, have been a mainstay of this league, and have always played a good brand of rugby. It’s a shame to see where they are in the table, but I’m sure they can turn it around. Let’s hope that starts after Christmas. We will be keen to ensure that we keep our momentum going into the Christmas block, having started to become more consistent, but we need the wins to show for it.

Last weeks result against Redruth almost sums up our campaign, some great tries, physicality, but discipline in last minutes of game costing us. A 45m penalty to win the game again biting us when all was in control.

The BUCS Super Rugby squad remain top of the League, albeit by 1 point. The league is living up to its billing as the best in the land with all teams capable of beating each other. In the bitterly cold of Exeter, we managed to get a bonus point from the fixture, unfortunately, they were too strong on their 4G pitch. Some good lessons for us, especially, the importance to having always to be at our best. No room to take our eye off the ball.

Last week we welcomed many former players for our Centenary Celebration. Our celebration dinner was held at the Sir Dennis Rooke room in Holywell, following the Redruth fixture. It was great to see the impact this club has had on the game, with many legends of the game having started at Loughborough. Many thanks to Nigel Gillingham OBE, RFU president and former captain, for being part of our panel.

Thanks again for supporting the squad today, it’s been great to see familiar faces every week. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

All the best to everyone today

Rhys Director of Rugby

Another Close Encounter on the Crumb

With the game good to go, the students flew out the block through winger Charlie Cadogen, who ended up with 3 tries to his name for his sizzling efforts down the left wing. His two first half tries were complimented by a great finish from Jon Mason, giving them a deserved 2110 lead at the break.

The second half saw the dynamic of the game turn on its head, relentless set piece pressure from Redruth saw them close the gap as the final stages approached. A well-taken maul hat-trick from their hooker Brown saw them gain the lead for the first time in the game, and with a yellow card to the students number 4, Finn Carnduff, the pressure told as Redruth crossed once more.

The sides exchanged penalties in the final 5 minutes, before a last play strike from Redruth fly-half saw them take the spoils in an epic encounter.

Both sides would have been frustrated with anything but a win, and the students will seek an immediate reaction as they host Stourbridge next week before the Christmas break.

TODAYS OPPOSITION STOURBRIDGE

Stourbridge RFC was started by members of the Cricket Club who wanted a winter activity and at first it was so successful that the club’s name was changed to the Stourbridge Cricket and Football Club.

However, within a few years, due to organisation and shortage of players, led to rugby football being ousted at Amblecote to be replaced by the rival sport association.

From 1883 rugby football soldiered on in a variety of locations throughout the town illuminated by a mini golden era from 1887-89 when only 4 games were lost out of a total of 37.

The club was re-formed in 1945 after the Second World War and it has made steady progress on and off

the field ever since. The consistent success of the 1st XV is reflected by the fact that in only four of the 56 post war seasons have they ended up with a losing record.

Facilities have improved throughout this period but the most significant change was the move to the present site at Stourton in 1965-6. Originally just over 11 acres, it was extended to 15 acres in 1983-4.

So far this season Stourbridge have had a tough time, winning just one of their games to date and currently sitting bottom of the table. This is the second face off between these two sides, with the Students coming out on top the first time round with a 54 – 25 win.
