THE FUTURE OF NEW ZEALAND

Manurewa High School Business Academy - profile of partnerships with business, alumni, tertiary and community

KULTURE SPLASH is a Young Enterprise company formed in our new Innovative Business Design course. The curriculum design is a collaboration between Business and Design. Teachers have valued the involvement of agency Little Giant to deliver real-world, relevant workshops.

"I can't be thankful enough for your incredible support financially and morally, considering you chose our story over many others. Because of you, I am determined to make the most of this invaluable experience - to place as highly as I know my drive for success will push me, to strengthen the connections already made, to build new bridges with new faces from new places, and to learn as much as I can, from a programme that arms me to become a leader of the future." Aaron Lew, Future Problem Solving International

"Thanks for the opportunity to work with you guys and your amazing students once again! Anne-Marie and Ayla – The Southern Initiative "It is us that need to thank you for all your support in our process of re-designing the curriculum. Having your Design Thinking guidance over the last two years has definitely helped facilitate a necessary change." Deputy Principal Barbara Ngawati-Salaivao

"Thank you so much for getting me involved with everything you have. They have all honestly been such life-changing experiences." Serenity Temu, 2017 graduate of Young Enterprise, EY Mentee, and recipient of a three-year scholarship to the University of Auckland Business School, 2018 ASB Mentee

Pathway to opportunity

"450 year 10 students – wonderful to capture a whole year group again! With the benefit of experience from last year, everything came together relatively seamlessly. We had positive feedback from all involved. Thank you for your support. Another successful programme!" Amanda McDermott and Victoria Morris, Nestle Cook for Life

Social Innovation NZ Case Comp at the University of Auckland Business School

"The Social Innovation NZ Workshop was an amazing way to interact with new people who share the same interests as us. It allowed us to put our business skills to the test. We all agree that it was a fun event that has prepared us for the future. We managed to place third out of seven schools, and are all very proud of each other and ourselves for our effort and commitment." Year 12 student Pranali Gounder

"Maker Space is where I can come and express myself and do what I want to do. I feel like in the future there will be more jobs in design and I think for me coming here and doing it right now, I will have a good future. I hope more people will join and come and enjoy themselves like we are and help each other out to do their projects." Year 9 student Qasim Ahmed, an early adopter of our new Maker Space. This creative, collaborative technology-enabled space has been established with the support of Keu Iorangi from Ask Q, It grows with wide-ranging support including from The Southern Initiative, Ministry for Youth Development, Perpetual Guardian, Unleash Space at the University of Auckland, and alumni.

"I'm super excited that my daughter was a part of the Vodafone Code Like A Girl programme. She told me it was so amazing and she learned many things about technology. For me it’s so important for every single student to understand about technology in life. It’s not a game - it’s important to use it wisely. This was also a very good way for students to see that people are working very hard like their parents to earn money." Parent Tausaga Tanielu

“I was nervous and scared to enter a room filled with important, smart and tall people gathered for the EY entrepreneurs' event. However, I am glad that I walked into the room. I met amazing people, and gained inspiration and ideas that I could use in my projects. My confidence was at all-time high, I was dressed formally, I was having casual conversations with strangers and I was standing with ease and pride while informing them about the Locker Project we've been working on. Year 11 student Yashna Kumar

“The initiative with SW Scaffolding offers the students a great opportunity. They will probably go straight from school into full time employment. How good is that? The employers have been really positive and I work with a great bunch of kids. It’s great seeing them get on.” Neil Lawton, workplace learning coordinator at MHS

“One of the many great things about the Matariki Maker Workshop was the way it connected some students who had difficulty engaging at school. They felt more comfortable in the less formal context and related to the mentors. Specialist Classroom Teacher Penny Bradford

"The visit to Hynds was very beneficial as I was able to understand the different positions that I could potentially work in as an engineer. Meeting the graduate students was also a very cool experience as I was able to ask relevant questions concerning tertiary study and being an intern at the company. My favourite position is probably either in stormwater or the technical department." Year 13 student Zaeem Mohammed

"Our UN Youth experiences have introduced us to the world of policy making and civics education. I’ve met like-minded youth and talked to them about policies and controversial topics that are present in today’s society. "We also engaged in workshops to better our leadership and debate skills as well as an ethics workshop which helped us realise how and why people make the decisions they do. I am grateful for the wonderful experience that I’ve had." Year 11 Health Sciences Academy student Harleen Bhathal

"This is what happened when I approached Simon Sinek to sign my copy of his Start with Why? book. I wanted to make an impact on his life as he had made on mine. I also wanted to capture his attention, because there were hundreds of people in the queue, and he didn't have time to interact. I decided to give him a proper Aotearoa welcome. With a “Kia ora Simon”, he was now signing the book. “Hello Lydia” he replied without glancing up. “I just want to say thank you for sparking the inspiration within us today. A late Maaori King once said ‘Kaore te whakakitenga ka ngaro te iwi’ – ‘Without vision our people are lost'. He looked up at me a bit speechless, and said 'Thank you, thank you so much for that'." Lydia Day, Waikato University, recipient of the scholarship awarded by Mike Bennetts (alumni) and his wife Karen

With the support of our partnerships, we are transforming lives, building the future of New Zealand, and creating a problemsolving powerhouse for our community.Â
