PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2

A

Success Is a Journey, Not a Destination

s I reflect on the year to write the Principal’s report for 2015, it dawns on me that this will be the last time I am required to write such a piece. After six years of having the honour of being Principal at Manurewa High School, my wife and I are retiring and returning to our city of birth – Nelson. The time at Manurewa High School, has been a very special part of my career; I have learnt so much about the special nature of the students and families of this school community. I never thought I would develop such a strong bond and have developed life time connections with so many students, staff and parents. This year has had a wide range of successes in sport, performance and academic areas as you can read in this magazine. The highlights include

SPORTING • Winning all 5 counties competitions including the 1st XV boys and girls • Winning a gold medal at the South Pacific Waka Ama • Winning the boys Auckland Volleyball Championship

PERFORMANCE • Winning all the many competitions • Medal winning concert achievements

Mastere.indd 2

dance band

• High Achievements in music competitions • Many nominations from a wellreceived musical production

ACADEMIC • Good achievements in Australian maths competitions • Future Problem team winning and representing New Zealand in the World Finals • A strong engagement in the Write That Essay training • Continual improvement in NCEA examinations This has been achieved by the hard work of staff and students and the support of families. Another significant feature of the year has been the considerable number of visitors to the school who have made comment about the atmosphere of the school. They refer to the friendliness of the students; their ability to develop appropriate conversations and be open and sharing. Many people commented that what they see in our school is a blueprint for what a community should be. With many different cultures working together, learning from each other holding onto core values. A community of learners who care for each other, celebrate success and strive to be the best they can. The school shows that a group is far more powerful than individuals.

This is consistent with the feedback I get when our students are being hosted on trips. There have been many trips this year; Music going to Australia, HALP to Cambodia and Language trips to Samoa and Japan. I was fortunate to be part of the two Language trips. To spend time with a group of students and share the experience of being in a foreign country was very special. On both trips I was proud to be associated with very special students who represented our school so well. Over the last few weeks, I have been interviewing students who came to study at Manurewa High School during this year. It is often difficult to transfer into a new school. These students have all commented on how friendly and helpful the students and staff have been in helping them fit into their new school environment. Thank you for all students who enhance this reputation. Congratulations to all students who achieved well this year. Remember this is not an end point as Arthur Ashe, a famous tennis player, said: “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome”. Thank you to the new editor of the magazine Jonathan Gabriel for the work he has done in publishing his first magazine – well done, it is a very valuable memory of the 2015 school year.

IN MEMORIAM

Gregory Leonard 1958-2015

furniture, set up every spare room in the school into a classroom and cope with contractors driving through the school to access the work site – welcome to life working as a caretaker in a school ! Seriously damaged knees forced him to get around the grounds on one of the school ride on tractors. This often led to more work as the hum of his approaching tractor alerted many to those jobs they may well have forgotten to tell him about. Greg’s sense of humour and kind heartedness even in times of extreme physical pain will be remembered with fondness for many years to come. Thank you Greg for your father heart, it was broken many times but you gave it all the same. Rest up now, from all of us that knew you and those that wish they did.

Greg started with us in October 2011 as Residential Caretaker of the school. Sadly on the 23rd March this year the property staff and school lost one of our more iconic characters, Greg Leonard. Greg found his way to us after doing insurance assessments during the Christchurch earthquakes, putting his many years of structural building to good use. He wanted to start over and adopting us was somehow his way of finally settling down and managing his ongoing health issues. Greg was friendly, helpful and jovial, he got on well with others. He was good at problem solving and he had built up a positive report with staff and students alike. One of Greg’s first tasks was to oversee the emptying of, what was, the A-D block in order for a major refurbishment. We had to then order containers to store

Paul Lees 1954-2015 This photo, from the 2001 yearbook, sums up the personality and attitude of Paul Lees very well. Thumbs up: he was optimistic and resilient in spite of suffering from serious health issues for several years before his tragic death from cancer in June, at the age of 61. Paul joined the Social Studies Department in 1980 and was still teaching until the middle of Term I this year. From the beginning he displayed teaching talent over all form levels and abilities at Manurewa High. He was an inspiring teacher and always gave his utmost for his students. He is remembered mostly for his work in Classical Studies but he also taught Social Studies and History. He organised an ambitious trip to classical sites in Europe and the Middle East in 1990, a trip which was nearly caught up in the First Gulf War and as a result of which the itinerary had to be hastily changed. As a teacher of History he joined the annual School Certificate History trips to the Devonport Naval Base and North Head in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also was involved for some years in the joint Art/ Classics camps, and appeared several times in school yearbooks dressed in the costumes of people in Ancient Greece and Rome, part of the “dressing-up parties” they held at these camps.

Mastere.indd 3

Although I had known Paul from the time he joined the Manurewa High School staff I became particularly friendly with him when M block was renovated in 2002 and we were allocated classrooms next to each other. We had an arrangement where students who were misbehaving would be sent to the next door classroom. For junior students with attitude the experience of sitting in a classroom with Level 3 Classics students was humiliating and an effective disciplinary tool! Paul also took responsibility for gifted and talented students and was the Manurewa High staff representative with the PPTA.

After my retirement from teaching in 2005 we continued to see one another regularly and during most school holidays would meet over a coffee in Botany and discuss Manurewa High gossip. Paul told me once that he had few friends, but within 24 hours of his passing there were hundreds of “likes” and “comments” on Facebook, including: “RIP Mr Lees. Your passion for Classical Studies shone through in your teaching and you never gave up on your students. Thank you for being such a supportive and wonderful teacher” “So sad to hear this; he was such a positive influence on my life and the reason I am currently doing a PhD in Classics” “He was an awesome teacher. Always ready with a quick witted retort. He was passionate and funny. RIP Mr Lees. Thank you for making our lives that much brighter for knowing you.” “Very sad news. Mr Lees was a huge part of our lives and we will miss him hugely” I was privileged to be able to visit and give encouragement to Paul during his last gigantic health battle and last saw him 12 hours before he passed away. Jing Chang (Hou)

I first applied to MHS for the position of HOLA Hiranga at a time when I felt I needed a break from teaching. I had been a teaching Principal at Orere Primary School for three years. Prior to that I was Deputy Principal at Moanataiari Primary School in Thames. I saw the advertisement, applied and was appointed. The rest they say is history. Orere School had 28 students. At that stage MHS had close to 2500 students. Imagine my reaction to my first timetable. It had a strange code on it “EUS”. None of my staff knew what it was. It was explained to me that I had also been given the lowest Level 1 English class. My first introduction to NCEA. Learning curve, no way, steep incline. In nine years I believe Hiranga has gone from strength to strength. We have worked under many different models and the key to our success as students complete year 11 is the commitment of the Hiranga teaching staff and teacher aides. I am grateful my line managers, Sandra Shaw and Pete Jones. Managing the school badminton teams for the past 8 years has been an absolute delight. Thanks Mel and Maggie for making it easy. My involvement with the school social committee, Niuean group, Health and Safety committee then as Branch Chair of PPTA has meant getting to know more of you personally. The next stage of my journey begins. Steve and I will be travelling around New Zealand in our lovely 5-wheel home on wheels. We will base ourselves at Murphy’s Holiday Park, Matata, our secret holiday home in the winter. You are welcome to visit. Future plans include an extensive trip to Europe in 2017, including a River Boat Cruise. Exciting times. In between all of this some relief teaching in the Bay of Plenty, but with 6 kids and 18 grandkids I am sure we will be kept busy. I leave MHS knowing I have made a difference.

I can still remember the first day at MHS. Friendliness of everyone, staff and students, made me to begin to love this place straight away. Now reflecting on the past three years, all the small moments, times of laughter, disappointment, success and frustration, added together to make my journey colourful and beautiful. I have grown so much as a teacher and as a person. I learnt that hard work pays off, and it does make a difference in others’ lives; that life has challenging moments, but things will get better if I don’t give up trying to do what is good and right; that I should enjoy the small moments with everyone, for it will not last forever; and much more. As I start my new chapter in Hamilton, I will miss the bright smiles, the enthusiastic voices calling me “Miss Hou/Mrs Chang” whenever I am walking around the school, the dedicated staff and all the other things that make Manurewa High School extraordinary. Farewell everyone!

Deon Wagner

After 25 years of teaching it was time for me to finish off a career that I am very passionate about. The job of Caretaker came up here at Manurewa High School and I thought to myself that would be great to land that job. No more marking, planning and endless meetings. I am still able to work with the kids around school, coach the 1st XV and develop athletes at school. I am fortunate enough to stay in the school house and it is great to say I have a massive backyard of 3 big fields, a swimming pool and 3 gymnasiums. I would like to make our school an even better place but I can’t do it by myself. I call on all teachers and students to work together and work on one of our school values. RESPECT. Not just respect for each other but to respect our environment/ whenua. The grounds staff are working hard to keep our school grounds tidy and with the help of staff and students we can showcase our school as, Rewa Hard. That’s how we roll.

Trish Gargiulo It is time for me to go however I am increasingly aware that leaving this community will leave a huge hole in my life. I have learnt much and for anything I have contributed I have received far more, certainly something I did not think about or understand before I came. I am and will remain a fiercely loyal advocate for this quite extraordinary school community and South Auckland. Thank you MHS !

What a magical 7 years I have had as HOLA of the Dance Department at MHS. I started with around 40 students and now over 500 students take Dance. Our successes have been outstanding, both with academic achievement and winning National Competitions. This year alone we won 5 titles and we truly can say, ‘we are the Champions’. There is no greater reward than student success and we have several students who have pursued Dance careers since leaving MHS. Namely: Laurence Kaiwai, who travels as a choreographer/ dancer, he is now internationally acclaimed and travels continuously around the globe bringing the joy of Dance to the masses. Starcia and Brooke Oneill have also found international success. Dancing with JLo (Jenifer Lopez) and featured in the ‘Born to Dance’ NZ Movie. They currently choreograph Stan Walker and are the opening act for his world Tour. Raisedinland Iose is completing his first year at Unitec which is one of the most prestigious Contemporary Dance Degrees Worldwide. My work here is done and I can hold my head high and watch with huge interest the successes that will continue to unfold in the years to come. This journey has been such an inspiration and we have the best teachers in NZ to continue this great work. I will remain Rewa Hard till my dying day.

Phil Muir

Phil Muir has a loooong history with Manurewa High that started in 1996. He did take a short break from us to travel for a couple of years but returned to continue the good work he is known for. He has had many roles here at Manurewa and has taught English and

9 Automotive Engineering (including allowing students to work on his own car!). He has also had a stint working in careers before moving into a DP role. Phil is known for his never ending positivity and for always seeing the best in every situation, he would often be heard telling staff and students to do ‘good stuff ’. Some of his ‘good stuff ’ here at Rewa has included forming the inaugural girls rugby team, working on the magazine, taking endless photos at various events (including numerous balls), working on social committee, participating and organizing in social events including endurance events and who could ever forget the use of his home to carry on the shenanigans after a staff Christmas function, organising 5 extremely successful trips to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as part of the Humanitarian Aid Leadership Programme as well as just filling in where ever and whenever needed. He left us at the end of Term 2 to begin the next phase of his career as a Regional Principal at Westmount school. We wish him well and know that he will be missed – fact!

Jonathan Gabriel Three years is a long time when it comes to education. I’ve seen plucky, naïve Year 9s turn into moody Year 11s who know everything. I’ve seen Year 11s become bright Year 13s, at the end of their high school career and brimming with potential. Three years is a long time for a teacher, too. Like any beginning teacher, I was nervous and filled with ideas. I’m no longer nervous, but I’m still firing and looking forward to my next challenge. Manurewa High School has been good to me. I will miss the friends I’ve made in the staffroom, but what I will miss the most is the students. There’s something special about a student from MHS, and I’ve seen the impact they can make in the big wide world. I’ve no doubt that the Year 13s graduating this year will be next year’s leaders.

PREFECT TEAM 2015 Wow! It’s crazy to think that 13 years of school has gone by just like that. We’ve come a long way; blossoming from innocent 5 years olds starting our first day of primary, to strong ambitious adults graduating high school. And we are proud to say to the class of 2015; WE ALL HAVE MADE IT! When we started Manurewa High School 5 years ago, we did not know what to expect. We were afraid because we were no longer the big kids of school. We were nervous about making new friends. We were determine to overcome the challenging obstacle that is known as ‘high school’. But more important than anything, we were excited to discover ourselves and our true potentials. Over the past few years, we have watched each other grow as individuals and as a year group. We started as the babies of Manurewa High School, learning and gaining from those who have passed us, to setting our own shining example of the Rewa Way for the future leaders of this school. Although some friendships were broken, many new life long friendships were developed. We’ve seen students who struggled through their first few days of high school push themselves to achieve their very best. We’ve seen injuries, tears, and sadness in each other’s eyes when goals were not reached. However, we’ve also seen the support, the determination, and the big goofy smiles on each other’s face when those goals were conquered and dreams were made. That is one thing Manurewa High School has taught us; life itself is a challenge, but courage and perseverance is the best defence. 2015 has been an exceptional year for Manurewa High School. We are thankful to have been offered multiple opportunities to not only represent our school, our families, but our community in the many aspects that shape this amazing school. We have represented Rewa High nationally and internationally in the fields of sports, visual arts, performing arts, and academically. The hunger to continue the long tradition of excellence that our school has fought so hard to achieve, was evident in the outstanding achievements by the student. So we salute every Manurewa High student who is out there, working their butts off to change society’s expectation of an uneducated South Auckland teenager, to a high achieving South Auckland

Mastere.indd 11

teenager capable of anything. Keep the phenomenal work up! We are proud of you. It has been an absolute honour to represent our school and community as Manurewa High School’s Head Prefects for 2015. Along with an amazing group of young leaders, we went on a camp at the beginning of the year to prepare us for the responsibilities of a Prefect Team. This camp was a great opportunity for us to create a special bond with our team and also prepared us for our responsibilities as Head Prefects. As part of serving our community, we were fortunate enough to partake in local events such as the ANZAC parade, the Armistice Day parade, and conferences which allowed us to develop a connection with locals. We also had the opportunity to further our relationship with our fellow students and the amazing staff who we will miss dearly. We are humbled by this experience and will forever be grateful to everyone that has encouraged and supported us in this journey. Thank you to the Senior Leadership team and Miss Thomas for believing in us. We wouldn’t have completed the year in one piece without your guidance. Thank you for the hard work you all have put into our prefect team. The support we have received this year and the encouragements have helped us enormously in terms of balancing education and our responsibilities to the school. We hope to have made you proud. Thank you to our wonderful and incredible Prefect Team for sticking by us throughout the year. Thank you for showing dedication and commitment to your roles, and being the amazing young leaders you are. We are incredibly happy to have shared this experience with you all and hope that you have enjoyed it just as much as we have. We wish you all nothing but the best. As we spread our wings and leave the safety nest of Manurewa High School, we leave with confidence

knowing that the school is in very capable hands. Congratulations Nikola Mafi Moala and Sulani Helg for being selected as Head Prefects for 2016. We know that the two of you will only continue to grow in yourselves and as strong leaders that will lead the school to bigger and greater things. Trust in each other and those who are there to support you. Stay humble, be strong and we wish you both the very best. To the class of 2015, it has been a blast with you all! We started as strangers and over the years, we’ve become a big Manurewa High family. Some have come and gone but to those that have remained, we congratulate you for making it this far. You can only grow from here onwards. We have become a powerhouse of innovation and creativity. As we say our final farewell to a place that has become a second home to us, we leave with the values that it has taught us. Values that will push boundaries and make this world a better place even in small ways. To my fellow graduates, always remember where you came from and where you are going. Thank you for the laughs, the bad and the good memories that will forever be cherished. We are proud of the young adults you have become. We wish you all the best for what the future holds. We are proud to have been a part of this long tradition of excellence at Manurewa High School. Thank you Rewa High for allowing us to show what leadership is to us; it is not about separating or being above others, it is about working and connecting with a diverse range of people. To the future leaders walking through those green gates, take everything that is on offer and turn your dreams into a reality. It won’t be easy but just remember that hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. All the best.

SCHOOL SUCESSES

Future Problem Solvers Success!

12

Aimee Lew, Aaron Lew, John Chen and Okesene Fotu attended the New Zealand Nationals for Future Problem Solving at Carey Park, Henderson on 30 October - 1 November. To get selected for the Nationals is a fete in itself as they must sit a qualifying exam. There are over 400 teams that do FPS throughout NZ. The Manurewa team was one of nine teams selected in the middle division. There were teams from all over NZ. The topic that the team had to research for the Nationals was Enhancing Human Potential. They must sit a 2 hour 15 minute exam and in that time they are given a futuristic scenario. They must read the scenario and find 16 problems, they then choose the biggest problem and write it up as their Underlying Problem. They find

16 futuristic and creative solutions to solve the UP. Once this is done they write 5 criteria to help them choose the best solution do a PMI on their 3 best solutions, pick the best solution idea and then write an action plan on how it will solve the scenario and have a positive impact on society. Once this is done, they must create a dramatic presentation on their best solution and present it to an audience. Their dramatic must have 3 dramatic elements, they must incorporate 2 mystery objects and a mystery quote, given by FPS into their dramatics.

Okesene worked really hard leading up to the Nationals, They did extra study with their coach in Labour weekend and in weekends. Their hard work paid off as they were second in the Middle Division for their booklet and second for their Dramatics. These results were amazing considering that they only started doing FPS in term two at Manurewa HS. Many of the students at Nationals have been doing it for 3 years. By getting second place the team is invited to represent Manurewa HS at the Internationals in Michigan, USA in June 2016. Glenis Martin FPS Coach

03 TAE FYD Career Navigator BBQ Project For our project we made BBQ’s and Braziers. The sample design was given to us by our teacher, Mr McKay, and we also looked on the internet to get more ideas. Our design brief was to make a BBQ or Brazier from recycled materials. We used old car rims and scrap materials from around our workshop. We welded, gas cut and continued to design and add bits and pieces to our project to make it unique. When they are all finished they will be sold and the money donated to KidsCan who supply the food for the school Breakfast Club. Nishil Prasad

On Thursday the 12th of November, 2 teacher and 6 students spent the day painting a huge mural. We had been asked by the Manukau Beatification Trust to participate in a competition they were running. Schools and local community groups were to paint murals around the outside of the clubrooms at Gallaher Park.

Mastere.indd 13

Designed by Ms Whittaker, the mural was based on simple colour blocks and shapes. We completed the base by midday, had lunch, and then finalised the figures over the top. We had a lot of praise throughout the day and once completed the mural was well received by the community.

COMMERCE

ANZ Business Challenge 2015

14

Massey University hosted an exciting event for Accounting and Economics students. The ANZ Business Challenge was held on 27 August. The Challenge was an evolution of the ANZ Economics Challenge that has successfully run for the last six years. The new format integrated economics and business studies in an analysis of this year’s Accounting Scholarship case study. The company of analysis for 2015 was Pumpkin Patch. The day was designed to not only be

educational structured specifically to the case study, but also provide a “real world” integrating Economics, Accounting, and Business analysis. They also speak on the day to different career paths in Commerce. In the speaker list we had Chelsea Leadbetter, a young sparky analyst, who recently secured the 2015 INFINZ Retail Equity Analyst of the Year. Additionally, we had several top economists from ANZ Bank. Sharon Zo̎ llner and two directors

from the ANZ Insights group, Ginny Openshaw and Greg Alford, who come highly recommended across NZ for their sector analysis. Professor Paul Dunmore who has vast experience providing intuitive company analysis, and well versed with Pumpkin Patch. The day provided an exciting learning experience for students culminating with $16,000 of Massey University Scholarships on offer for the take home challenge.

Tip Top Factory Tour 2015 Level 1 Economics get the chance to tour Tip Top ice cream factory in Mt Wellington. They learned about how different types of ice creams are made. Who makes the decision, what they need to consider before making any decision about their product or emloyees and how every decision made by them effects the society. Students enjoyed the whole experience and picked their favorite ice cream for free.

SOME FACTS ABOUT TIP TOP In 1936 two friends, Len and Albert, opened an ice cream parlour in Manners St, Wellington. Little did they know that their humble venture would grow to become a national icon loved by generations of New Zealanders. Len and Albert soon began making their own ice cream. Not waiting for big ideas from overseas, they were innovators from the beginning.

Len and Albert launched their first dipped ice cream on the planet! novelty ice cream bar in the early 1950’s Tip Top today… In a country with the – Eskimo Pie is an oldie but a goodie and world’s best milk and cream, the purest is still loved today. Then came their first water, the sweetest fruit and richest ice cream on a stick, Topsy (named after flavours, it’s no surprise Tip Top is the one of Len’s favourite cows). In 1962, world’s best ice cream – and it’s made these Kiwi upstarts built the Southern right here in NZ. ART

Art Department Report

18

The Art department has once again had a very productive year this year. It never ceases to amaze me how much talent our school has within it. The Visual Arts have joined with the digital department this year to become one department and I know that all the teachers in the department are excited about new course possibilities that the merge of these two subjects bring. The students in the department over the past year have had great success artistically within the school and the wider community. Once again in May we had 3 senior students work, selected out of a pool of 90 Auckland wide students to exhibit in ‘The Original Art show’. There was a total of 40 finalists and the level of the students work was exceptional. It was a great gala evening and all students whose work was selected should be very proud of their achievements. Term Two was a busy term, students helped do a little set painting for the production and we were asked by the Homai community policing team to paint a mural on the Homai bowling club walls. Myself, Ms Whittaker and the student teacher Mr Hards took a group of year 10 students to the Homai bowling club to paint a mural on the clubs shed wall. Although we tried to avoid bad weather unfortunately that was not meant to be. We happily painted under Tarpaulins that the police and the club rigged up and

Mastere.indd 18

were treated to a sausage sizzle from the police. Despite the wet weather the mural was finished and looks great, in fact we have been approached by the Manukau beautification trust to paint another mural which is scheduled to take place in November. In Terms 2 & 3 this year the seniors were treated to two Artist talks and a workshop from practicing artists Charlotte Graham and Lisa Reihana. Level One students were treated to a full day workshop with artist Charlotte Graham. Charlotte took students through a step by step process working back into their bird prints using a variety of mixed media. All students who took part in the workshop thoroughly enjoyed it and their hard work that day produced some great results. All Level 2 and 3 students in the department went to the Auckland Art Gallery in Term 2 to look at Lisa Reihanas work ‘in Pursuit of Venus (infected)’. This work was thought provoking and at times challenging to watch. It was a 26 metre panoramic video. Later in the term Lisa Reihana came in and did an artist talk in which she gave the students an insight into the processes involved with a project of this size and the ideas behind it. Every year the annual school Art exhibition gets bigger and this year was no different. We had the most student work exhibited and the quality of the work was amazing. So much so that

Ed-Pac who donate the prizes for the evening were so impressed with the quality of the work they added another prize. People took advantage of the fundraiser for the HALP trip, portraits for a gold coin donation. It was such a treat to see the hall a buzz with students, parents, teachers and members of the community. The department works hard to raise the profile of our students work in the Art community and this year was no different. We had our senior painters and photographers exhibit successfully in a group exhibition with; Rosehill, Papakura, Alfriston and James Cook High Schools at the Papakura Art gallery. Also coming up Mr Holllis’s illustration class have an exhibition of their work at Te Tuhi. Over the year students have also entered work into the Franklin Art Festival and Wallace Trust Awards. We are coming to the end of another year as our Level 3 do the final push to complete their folios, the teachers are still busy prepping units for next year and organising the three murals to be completed before the end of the year. The hard work and long hours of support that the teachers of the department have put in to assist the students, has been evident in the quality of the work. I know all the teachers in the department are excited to see what a new year brings in the Art department and what new talents will emerge from the students.

BUSINESS STUDIES

Business Studies Report

19

2015 has been another enjoyable and successful year in the Business Studies Department. All year levels have been busy creating their own businesses, coming up with creative and innovative products and taking them to market. We have been very lucky to have some amazing speakers of a very high calibre come in and speak to our students. John Hynds founding Director and CEO. He spoke to the level 1 and 2 students about the way Hynds operates. Carrier Alexander had a difficult task of keeping the Level 1 students engaged and interested on her successful business. Each year group also had the opportunity to go out and see businesses. Level 1’s visited both Spookers and Rainbows End, Level 2’s visited Hynds. The Pacific Business Trust hosted many workshops for the Level 3’s. All of these trips related to the students assessments and helped the students gain lots of knowledge to help them succeed. We are looking forward to what 2016 is going to bring to the department. Mr. S Vega

DANCE

Dance Department Report

22

2015 has been an exceptional year for Dance. We welcomed yet another full time staff member to the department, Mr Allister Sala’ivao, who brought with him a wealth of knowledge and performance skills to an already talented department of teachers. All four teachers are professional Dancers who inspire students not only with vigorous pedagogy, but by being lifelong learners who continue to strive to be the best on and off the stage. Our internal NCEA results make us teachers very proud as our enthusiasm and love for our subject rubs off on our students which produces high pass rates with very few grades passing at not achieved. 2015 has also been a record breaking year with our competition entries. We have won every competition we have entered, culminating in five 1st places. Firstly SDNZ in February, The Project in Tauranga, Battle All-style League, Generation X, a new competition being introduced, and to top it all off Stand Up Stand Out. This was the 6th time we had entered and the 6th time that we held our title as champions. On this occasion it was the all-boys crew ‘Deuces’. Led and choreographed by Jerome Vini and Andy Ha, joined by Jordan Anderson, Murphy Fa’alava’au, Edmund Me-Maiava, Steve Tahere, David Tinomana, Tommy Tran, Sakiasi Tavita. SDNZ ‘Street Dance New Zealand Competition’ had an amazing leadership team, namely Mathew Pule’anga, Mele Tapueluelu, Dannielle Pora. These students were 100% committed to the process, overseen by the incredibly energetic Mele Tae’iloa, and supported by Allister Sala’ivao. The overall concept of time travel and change being possible was innovative and inspiring. 27 students ranging from year 9-13 were involved in this Hip-hop routine which had a story line. The message was performed with absolute precision which was received with overwhelming support by the public audience. The ultimate result ended in Manurewa High School

Mastere.indd 22

being announced as the 1st Place Prize winners. The Project in Tauranga was our next great adventure. Shaquelle Maybury took 33 students assisted by 2 ex-students Raisedinland Iose and Frankivelli Toelupe, who are currently attending Unitec, with Mr Sing and Mrs Mathews. These students made up four crews namely: Deuces, ToXsk, De Legacy and Salute on an awesomely entertaining, high energy, journey. Each and every member of every crew was respectful, diligent and committed fully to a very high work load. Each crew hit that stage with professionalism and made us all very proud. ‘Salute’ won the secondary schools division, which is a very prestigious award. Salute was choreographed by Nese Godinet and consisted of one year 9 and one year 11 student, the remaining seven were all year 10, making this the first ever junior crew we have ever entered. Nese Godinet, Jaden Godinet, Tyrone Fa’apoi, Alice Lam Sam, Saige Mamanu, Iavana Seuala, Jerish Tanuvasa, Blade Tuiasau-Makoare, Amber ‘Inia. Leadership Team for Generation X, a first year competition that focused on creating the leaders of tomorrow consisted of Mathew Pule’anga, Mele Tapueluelu, Sione Tu’ungafasi, and Dannielle Pora. 2015 was the birth of this new innovative concept combining many different facets of the arts, culminating in a live performance. Everything had

to come from the students themselves, there were many different components, namely: spoken word, music, multimedia and Dance. The fusion that was created by all of the students and leaders involved, sent shivers down the spines of all who were lucky enough to witness this creative, passionate, masterpiece. MHS were announced as the 1st Place winners. Projekt Team organised the first Battle All Styles Dance League (BADL) for secondary schools where student’s freestyle in 1 on 1 dance battles. We had 4 amazing freestyle dancers represent our school - Murphy Faalavaau, Jayden Godinet, Danielle Pora and Sione Tu’ungafasi. Jayden and Danielle finished up winning their rounds and Sione, our freestyle King, danced his way to first place. This year we were honoured to have 3 of our male students receive scholarships to attend New Zealand Dance Company’s ‘Just For Bros’ Spring School Workshop. Keith Fata, Marquise Rodgers and Matthew Pule’anga spent their first week of holidays training and working alongside well known choreographers Tupua Tigafua and Christopher Ofanoa. They work-shopped and fused contemporary and hip hop movement to create a dance piece based on an art-piece painted on a plate. The 3 boys have been invited back in hope of a performance opportunity with the group at next year’s Tempo Dance Festival.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Hands on Science

24

A WEEK AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY JANUARY 2015 I received the University of Otago Award at the Manukau Regional Science fair in 2014. This prize gave me the amazing opportunity of attending the Otago University “Hands on Science” week in Dunedin in January 2015 – all expenses were paid by Otago University and Canon. I spent a week with over 200 other students who had the same passion in science as myself. During this week I attended exclusive lectures, conducted experiments in their labs and got to

experience university life. There were many Science projects that interested me including Nano Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Thank you Otago University for an amazing week. It was very fun filled and enjoyable and I really enjoyed the intellectual talks and debates with other intellectual minds. I am grateful to them for the use of their facilities and thanks to the wonderful organisers. Ranish Chand Year 13

Science Fair 2015 The NIWA Manukau Science and Technology fair Prize giving was held at Mission Heights Junior College on Tuesday 18th August. Congratulations go to our participating students for representing Manurewa High School in a positive light. Once again we have had considerable success, and came away with the following prizes: Timothy Dreadon (11KTV) won First place in the Year 9 to 13 Secondary Consumer category. His project, “Dehumistify – To Dry or Dehumidify?”, looked at whether drying clothes was more economical using a dehumidifier or a dryer – the dehumidifier won. Tim also won a prize for ‘Best Innovation, Invention or Investigation in year 11’, and his bank balance is not a lot healthier than when he began this process. His sister Tessa Dreadon (13 TRS) was also rewarded, she won a Highly Commended award for her entry “Precious Resources – Endangered and Threatened Animals” in the Scientific Photography category.

Mastere.indd 24

In the Senior Science category, Manisha Paliwal of 13ASC won second place for her investigation entitled “Five fats Fight it Out”. Manisha compared 5 different cooking fats, from various international cuisines, to determine the most healthy fat in terms of rancidity, how fast they oxidized, melting point, saturation and chain length. She found that clarified butter (ghee) commonly used in India was by far the most healthy to cook with in that it had a very high smoke point and was far less prone to developing free radicals due to rancidity. Third equal in the same category went to Aimen Sana of 12KSV with a project called “Garlic: To Wait or Not!”. She was also awarded the prize for Best Innovation, Invention or Investigation in year 12. Aimen’s project looked at whether or not crushed garlic ought to be left to ‘sit’ before being added to the cooking pot. After experimenting with crushed garlic and a range of ‘sitting times’ Aimen found that the ideal wait time before adding garlic to the pot was 10 minutes. At that time the antimicrobial properties of the garlic would peak and hence cooking before or after the ideal sitting time would diminish the efficacy of the anti-microbial compounds in the food. For the third consecutive year, we also won the award for Best Application of the

Scientific Method. This carries a prize of a fully paid trip to the Otago University “Hands on Science” week. So Prabhjot Kaur of 12KSV will be winging her way South in January. Her winning project entitled “Long Live Lactase” investigated whether regular milk could be made lactose free by buying just 1 litre of lactose free milk. By inoculating regular milk with various volumes of lactose free milk, she found that the active enzyme was still able to function in the regular milk and hence, after 3 days, would turn the milk into lactose free. This would save money for people who need to drink lactose free milk but find it too expensive. Sidrick Salting (12PVG), Amber ‘Inia (10TSL) and Simran Naicker (09ABH) all received Participation certificates for having their investigations chosen to represent a school at regional Science Fair level., which is an accomplishment in itself. It is interesting to note that our students who do well in Science Fair usually go on to study in the Sciences and pursue interesting science based careers, once you start these investigations it is hard to stop! Our students are fortunate to have excellent facilities and outstanding laboratory technicians to help them on their way. Mrs F Colyer

Otago University Innovation Challenge On July 1st we had four teams of senior Physics students represent our school in the Otago University Innovation Challenge competition. In this event different schools compete to firstly grasp a selection of new technologies, and then apply/innovate a few to solve a real world problem in an entrepreneurial manner. Their solution had to be presented to a panel of judges by powerpoint and had to show true understanding, good

feasibility, clear and concise delivery, point of difference as well as a well identified market need. Our teams were : Affro Affect - Sean Davidson, Rama Martin and Grayson Nicholson. Broton - Arden Infante, Amish Singh and Ryanel Reynon The Raging Hadron - Lukey Zhou, Ranish Chand and Jessie Chen Bright Spark - Adam Scott, Hayley Ngo and Kajal Raju

25

All of our teams had great ideas, and we came away with the Award for the team with the «Best understanding of the Technology» (Affro Affect) and also the award for «Audience Choice» (Raging Hadron). I can honestly say I was very proud of them all - for their promptness in meeting for the 7.20 am train, their excellent behaviour, neat appearance, enthusiasm and work ethic, overcoming extreme nerves to get up and talk and finally for their creative thinking and solution focused ideas. It was a pleasure to accompany them, to me they were the best kids in the entire event! Mrs F Colyer

Rotary National Science Forum

Hayley Ngo (year 12) has been selected to attend the Rotary National Science & Technology Forum. This is a fully residential programme hosted by Auckland University and sponsored by Rotary and runs from 9 th – 23 th January 2016. Only outstanding all- round Science, Maths and Technology students are selected from all over Australasia. These students must be planning to study the sciences or technology at tertiary level. The forum is very intensive and involves a mixture of science, socializing and sporting fun. By the end of the Forum students should have a better understanding of the tertiary courses they wish to

follow and a fuller appreciation of the place of science and technology in the wider community. It also provides an opportunity for high achieving students to spend time with similar minded people and the experiences gained invariably result in overall personal growth and a renewed motivation to succeed. We know Hayley will be an excellent ambassador for not only herself but also for our school. For those who would like to attend such events in the futureyou will need to develop a good record of extra-curricular science based activity in order to qualify eg Science Fair, Otago University Science and Technology Innovation

Challenge or Sir Paul Callaghan Science Orators Competition- this is how Hayley ‘qualified’ herself for selection. So keep your ears open and make the most of opportunities offered. Mrs F Colyer

Youth Champion Award

On Tuesday 26th May I was honoured to fly down to Wellington with my invited guest, my husband, to receive a Youth Champion Award. This award is offered by The Ministry of Youth Development and was presented by the Minister for Youth and Associate Education, the honourable Dr Nikki Kaye. The Youth Champion Award aims to foster young people making a difference in their community, whether this be though social, sporting, cultural or educational means. A small section of the ceremony is devoted to older people who have helped our youth excel, and

Mastere.indd 25

that was the area in which I was involved. The event was held in the banquet hall of the Beehive in Wellington. We were treated to a range of culinary delights and some welcoming speeches before being awarded our plaques. My gratitude goes to the organisers, the panel, and the school for its support. MEDIA STUDIES

Media Studies Report 2015 has been a massive year for the Media Studies department. It has been a real honour to work with such talented and passionate students who have produced some fantastic work this year, both academically and practically. I am excited about the course possibilities that are going to come from these students and working within the Digital & Visual Arts department. This year the department acquired its first DSLR cameras which has been very exciting. It has given the Level 2 & 3 students much more creative freedom in creating their horror trailers and

documentary films. The standard of the films produced by the students in all areas has been exceptional. With the students utilizing aspects of the new cameras effectively, such as exposure and focus. In Term 2 the Level 3 students were treated to a talk from Australian filmmaker Jacinta Scadden. Having just completed a documentary film in Australia she gave the students a talk and an insight on the film industry. Students then pitched their documentary ideas to Jacinta and got valuable feedback from

Mastere.indd 27

her for their films. The students enjoyed listening to her stories from the film industry, productions she had worked on and most importantly the feedback she gave them. I have felt positive and optimistic about how the Media department has been able to be involved across

curriculum subjects. Media students have taken cameras to film various Dance competitions throughout the year. They also had a big role in filming the High School Musical drama production which I oversaw. The professionalism of the students in filming these events has been exceptional and I am looking forward to developing this further next year.

27

We are coming to the end of another year, as senior students are starting their exams and completing the final leg of their journey it is time to think about the future, and what 2016 holds for Media Studies and its students. Next year my focus is going to be to channel the passion and talent of the students into more extra – curricular activities such as: V48 hours and The Outlook for Someday film competition. This will challenge the students and give them the opportunity to push the boundaries of their skills and compete against other students. I also want to establish more extra-

curricular opportunities for the students to hone their skills in media, such as film clubs for watching and making films. Also developing a screening night for parents, teachers and students peers to come view and celebrate their hard work. The future for Media at Manurewa High School is looking bright and positive going into 2016. I am hoping to see Media Studies grow more next year and offer more opportunities for students. I am excited to see what 2016 holds and what new talents will come from the students..

GEOGRAPHY

Level One Geography

28

RANGITOTO FIELDTRIP At the end of term 3, level 1 Geographers went on a fieldtrip to Rangitoto Island to learn more about volcanoes and the effects that an eruption would have on the environment around Auckland. We first caught a bus into the city to the ferry terminal where we caught a ferry at 9:15 to Rangitoto Island to start our two hour walk to the summit. Once there we drew an annotated map of Auckland city and its surroundings to discuss what effects the eruption would have on our city and what places would be good for an evacuation. Places such as the Waitakere ranges for example. After our descent we once again boarded the ferry and made our way back to Auckland city.

Our next stop was Auckland museum where we visited the volcanic display which offered us heaps of information to fill into our booklets. We also got to experience the volcano house at Huia Place where you get a full insight into what it would be like if a volcano had erupted in Auckland. Eventually we made our way back to school on the bus after a long day of exploring. The following day we had 5 hours to complete a GIS assessment where we mapped what areas would be affected by an eruption if it occurred. We were then asked to write a report to the Civil Defence Emergency Management to outline certain areas that would need to be evacuated in the event of an eruption and where to. Jayden Cheer 11PBY

Level Two Geography TONGARIROFIELD TRIP APRIL 2015 On the Monday we travelled down to Tongariro visiting Taupo on our way before we got to our destination. We got to see many towns along the way as well as the beautiful Huka falls. On Tuesday morning we visited the DOC centre and learned many facts about the history of Tongariro National Park and different ways of keeping Tongariro sustainable. We then went to the Top of The Bruce, at the base of the Whakapapa ski field. Here we viewed the stunning mountain that make up the National Park. Then it was onwards to Silica Rapids where we studied the rivers depth and velocity as well as the types of vegetation; all important information for our research. It was a great learning

Mastere.indd 28

experience and we found a lot of information to help us, even if it was a bit chilly. Wednesday saw us travel to the Rangipo dessert which was on the east side of TNP. We travelled to the upper Waikato stream (which was like a puddle) to compare the velocity and depth to the Silica Rapids. In the afternoon we travelled by bus to the Tangiwai Disaster memorial. We saw how the lahar had wiped out the train tracks on that fateful Christmas Eve in 1953. On Thursday we set out to complete the Tongariro crossing (which was 19km long). We were all very excited to walk the crossing

as it is one of the world’s most famous walks. However, we were not prepared for the ‘devil’s staircase’: a steep ascent to the base of Mt Ngauruhoe. After we passed the highest point of the walk, we stopped by the Emerald Lakes (which are stunning even if they do smell horrible) to have lunch and replenish our energy for the rest of the crossing. The walk took about 7 hours, but we managed to push through the times that we found difficult. Later in the evening we were rewarded with a trip to the Tokaanu hot springs to relieve our aching muscles.

We were very sad we had to travel back to Auckland, as this camp was one of the highlights of the year. We gained a lot of knowledge as well as an amazing experience and we wish we could do it all over again. On the Way back home to Auckland our bus broke down in the middle of nowhere. Apart from the heat and a 1 hr wait, we were finally able to get home. We definitely recommend Geography to everyone who may not know what to take, as it provides an astonishing experience. ROTORUA TRIP

Level Three Geography

We set out travelling by bus on a wintery August day to our destination: Rotorua. Our first visit was to the Bath House, which is now the “Rotorua Museum”. At the museum we gathered a lot of information by one of the educational team members who was able to provide resources for our upcoming external exam. It was a huge help. The lecture included a PowerPoint presentation of Rotorua’s historic timeline which showed how tourism has changed the region over the past 150 years. We also watched a video there showcasing the eruption of Mt Tarawera which destroyed Rotorua’s main key attraction the “Pink & White Terraces that attracted many visitors from all over the world. Here we got to experience the strong shake of the eruption as we were sitting in our chairs, as they were swaying from side to side. This experience at the museum was unforgettable. Te Puia was the next stop. We had access to the world famous Pohutu geyser and had the opportunity to see Māori cultural performances, boiling mud pools, native bush and the National School of Wood Carving and Weaving. We had an instructor who was able to take us around and it was good to see Maori Culture growing in aspects of development in the Tourism Industry. On Day two our first destination was the Agrodome located in Ngongotaha, 10 km north of Rotorua CBD. The Agrodome presents visitors from near and afar a unique experience of both country life

Mastere.indd 29

and the farming heritage that is valued by New Zealanders. During our tour, we took part in cow milking, lamb feeding and dog demonstrations as well as the multi-award winning Agrodome show - an exciting and informative insight into New Zealand agriculture. Next stop was the township of Rotorua, for the purposes of observing the distribution of the various accommodation and services along Fenton Street. Using a base map of the CBD, we were tasked to walk the length of Fenton Street and locate and name all of the accommodation sites along both sides of it. After the task was complete, we were granted an intermission and the right of free time in Rotorua. This allowed us to further develop an understanding of tourism development, some students took the time to conduct a survey on locals. The survey included a questionnaire That afternoon we also got to experience spectacular rides at Agroventures, New Zealand’s leading adventure hub. We got to experience many rides such as the Agrojet, Freefall Xtreme, Swoop, Shweeb and the Rotorua bungy. Not only did we get to experience

up to five of New Zealand’s favorite activities, we also got cheap deals for our rides which was a bonus. On the final day we stopped off at Skyline Skyrides and after the gondola ride to the top we completed a précis sketch. We did this on the mountain edge at Skyline Rotorua as we were able to see almost all of Rotorua’s landscape. After our sketching was done, we got to ride the luge which was great fun. This was definitely a fantastic way to end the fun times that we geographers had at camp. Christian Tuitupou

“Ever since I was born, I have always tried to exceed my best, and do better than my last. Why wouldn’t I jump at the chance to go on the highest course? It was a chance to prove to myself that I could do it, and do it well. A part of me wanted to do it to prove to the others who sniggered at me that strength isn’t on the outside. I probably looked a bit weird, the skinny girl wanting to do the scariest course. And that’s exactly what made me want to prove them wrong.”

I’ve also learnt that it enables you to message those who don’t have a Facebook page, do online power points and word documents and save them in One Drive which is shared amongst our class peers; then everyone is able to read them.”

Write That Essay about AKORANGA In Te Pae Tawhiti at the start of term 3 we were asked to write a writing goal to help us improve our writing. I gave myself 9/10 for the effort I have put so far into achieving the goal. I believe that I have worked really hard this term. My Mum bought me a journal. I wrote in my journal for fifteen minutes a day and asked family members to read my writing

for feedback. I’ve asked others for help also. I’ve used a dictionary. I downloaded an app on my phone. I used the dictionary app to help me find words I wanted to use that I didn’t understand. I still need to improve my writing by asking friends or family members to time my writing so that I can challenge myself to write more.

Health Science Academy 2015 THE INTENTION BEHIND THE INITIATIVE This year was the second year of running a Health Science Academy at Manurewa High School. Having gained mixed results in our first Academy class, the 2015 Science Academy class were selected based on their desire to pursue Science as a field of study in their future, rather than on ability. The number was narrowed to one dedicated class of 28. These students were required to complete a double line of Science; four hours a week with a Biology specialist and four hours a week with a Chemistry/Physics specialist. This careful selection has resulted in a much more focused and enthusiastic group of individuals who have shown a dedication to pursuing Excellence in Science. Well done Academy, I look forward to seeing you lead the next cohort through as Science mentors in 2016. Mrs N Stevens.

EVENTS AND TRIPS This year there have been limited trips offered to students as creation of the new standards for the double line of Science took precedence. However as Level 2 Academy students the cohort from this year will be invited to attend any events or guest speaker visits offered in 2016. Students did have the opportunity to attend Scitech, a Rotary dinner and take part in a mould study, which directly links to their interactions between humans and microbes internal achievement standard.

SCITECH EVENT Ten students were invited to attend an annual event - The Science and Technology Experience. This is an exciting programme held at Unitec and Liggins Institute, at Auckland University. This event is for Year 11 students interested in Science and Technology and is held during the July School Holidays. Due to overwhelming interest from academy students we requested and were given an additional 5 places at this event. Rotary kindly offered to partially

Mastere.indd 33

fund the event for 10 participants and the academy class created a bake sale to provide the additional funding so all 15 participants attended the event at a subsidised rate. This showed excellent self- management and support for their fellow students from all Academy students, even though some were not personally going on the trip. This team spirit shown early on by this class was pleasing to see, as one of the directives for this course was to create a whanau model were students support each other. As part of this 2 day event students got to experience science at a tertiary level and were lucky enough to take part in Science simulations in a vet laboratory, sports workshop, designing robotics and using medical imaging. Students were also introduced to the disciplines of civil engineering and architecture along with testing their leadership and problem solving skills.

ROTARY DINNER As part of the funding offer provided by Rotary, three students were invited along with Mrs Stevens to share their experience with the local Rotary group at a weekly dinner meeting. The students left this dinner buzzing, so excited to have met a world renowned microbiologist and other industry leaders. This was an excellent opportunity for the students to get ‘real world’ stories from Scientists and business professionals, but to also give personal thanks for the funding that gave them the opportunity to attend SciTech.

science project to plan and research, one which produced unexpected results. There was evidence found in many homes of dangerous bacteria and yeast species. It is the intention of the Academy

to continue with this study in 2016 on a much larger scale.

2015 HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY PRIZEGIVING To conclude a very successful year the Science Academy celebrated the many successes achieved by students in a prizegiving afternoon tea. Fifteen students were awarded certificates of Excellence with five of them getting Supreme Excellence Awards. Congratulations to Rida Basharat, Monica Hor, Anjali Karan, Suhena Kumar and Samantha Oh for outstanding excellence throughout the year. The class winners were Anjali Karan for Biology and Monica Hor for Physics/ Chemistry, with the trophy recipient for best in year going to Monica Hor.

MOULD STUDY A new initiative Manurewa High School was involved with this year was the COMET funded mould study. As part of the SouthSci initiative which aims to provide funding and opportunity to South Auckland communities our students conducted a mould study with partner school Rongomai Primary. This study gave students a real world

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 34

A New Hope: A Message from the Flagship Department At Manurewa High School, the English Department continues to lead the way; a beacon of innovation, a powerhouse of student achievement, a flagship for the mighty fleet of waka that is the school. Most students have achieved too much in English this year for their myriad accolades to be recorded here. The department grows weary from its own successes, and this article will not capitalise on them any further. Indeed, the English Department has this year constructed a learning programme that rivals NASA astronaut training. An important part of our curriculum has been speeches; for the first time, Year 10 students delivered speeches for credits at NCEA Level 1. It is only because we have sought to develop this passion for oral presentation in our young people that they have achieved highly in other areas. For example, Philip (P.J.) Tele’a dazzled the school with his performance in High School Musical, and broke the internet with his rendition of ‘Lean on Me’ at the Otara Music and Arts Centre. While P.J. has become a star in his own right, what is not often spoken about is that he owes much of his success, not to drama or dance, but to English, particularly his English teacher, who, according to a source close to him, has been his most serious inspiration. In English, we emphasise the value of questioning. English allows students to develop critical and enquiring mind-sets, vital tools in the subversion of repressive social norms and authority. Young people are encouraged not only to exist in the world, but to question every aspect of it. In any given English classroom, at any time, questions are flying: “Sir, why don’t you get a haircut?”; “What were your dreams before you became a teacher?”; “Miss, how much do you get paid?”; “Sir, WHAT ARE THOOOSE?!?” Formal writing is an important component of the syllabus. Every student loves it; for most, it is the defining experience of their schooling. Earlier in the year, a particularly upstanding student, Sulani Helg, flawlessly repelled a burst of negative attention directed at MHS with her Facebook post, which was republished by several major newspapers. As it began, ‘At the end of the day, individuals who choose to participate in rebellious acts reflect their

HISTORY

History Report

36 History has had an exciting year. Adventure filled field trips, inspiring guest speakers and courses students become immersed in have seen 01, 02 and 03 History embark on a journey of self-discovery. By looking at the world’s conflicts and conquests through the eyes of others, students are developing a better understanding of their place in the past, present and their role in making our world a better place in the future!

Two words that describe Camp Waiouru... Educational and fun! I enjoyed the museum visit the most because I learnt a lot of interesting and important information that I could use in my essay. It was also a thought provoking experience with regards to the Lieutenant’s presentation and agent orange. This made me question what was happening during that time. I have learnt so much from the Vietnam War topic. In which I would classify, a headache and a heartache. Knowing about the terrible things that happened during this period only makes me want to learnt more and more about similar historical events. Like the Genocide that occurred in Cambodia and the communist government in China. Level 2 history has been very intriguing and enlightening and I appreciate all the hard work that the social science department has put into this course.

“To learn about the past so we don’t repeat it in the future.” Level 2 history this year has been

a very thought provoking course. The variety of achievement standards that we have studied has been satisfying as well. I enjoyed learning about the Dawn Riads and I understood the significance of it to the world and New Zealand. The Dawn Raids. This was one of my highlights of the year. I was able to study something that I could relate to, and something that was close to home. I thoroughly enjoyed the Polynesian Panthers visit as well, as it helped me gain a better understanding of the Dawn raids and perspectives. That was by far my favorite part of the year. Prior to studying about the Dawn Raids in class, I was well aware of what it was. Hence why I was full of excitement once I found out that our next topic was The Dawn Raids.

BIOLOGY

Level 2 Biology Camp Level 2 Biology offered a three day camp at the Waharau Regional Park which was held from the 30th of March to the 1st of April this year. The aim of this camp was to expose students to Ecological studies in a forest setting. It involved students to investigate stratification and succession processes in a New Zealand forest, collecting and analysing data, drawing and interpreting graphs. These findings were then reported in a written assessment (under formal conditions) which involved eight credits towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievements (NCEA). The standards

covered during camp were AS 91153 and AS 91158. The Science staff involved were Mrs N Stevens (who took the responsibility of camp organisation and its smooth execution), Mrs L Palmer, Mrs F Toloa and Mrs A Barron. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Science Department and the Senior leadership team for their continued support.

Level 3 Biology is a full year course that allows students to gain internal and external credits towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievements (NCEA). One of the internal standards worth three credits (AS 91607) is based on the applications of the biotechnological techniques and human manipulations of genetic transfer. The Level 3 Biology students were taken on a daytrip to the Liggins Institute on the 25th of February and the 19th of March 2015. It’s an excellent opportunity for students to have hands on experience using the various techniques used in modern day laboratories. It enabled students to have a better understanding of processes such as DNA profiling and PCR methods. This knowledge is then assessed in a written examination (formal exam conditions).

The teachers involved during this daytrip were Mrs F Toloa and Mrs N Stevens. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Science Department and the Senior leadership team for their continued support.

Level 3 Biology Zoo Trip This year Level 3 Biology students were very lucky to have a second trip outside the classroom. On June 29th as part of their human evolution topic 33 students were able to visit the Auckland Zoo and take part in the Trends in Human Evolution programme. It was a very valuable experience for students to be able to have hands on time with skulls and model chimpanzee and human skeletons to compare changes linked to bipedalism. The second part of the programme involved students analysing replica skulls and tools to determine biological and cultural evolution pathways. It wouldn’t have been a real day at the zoo without visiting the many interesting animals on

ESOL Department Report

2015 has been a year of changes, challenges, and many successes for the ESOL Department. We have seen new support staff, new NCEA EL unit standards assessments being brought in, new courses offered and students gaining valuable learning experiences and achieving notable accomplishments. As always, in the department, ‘rewarding’ is the mostly heard comment when seeing our students develop their confidence in the ability to communicate using English. As a department, we continue to strive to teach literacy skills in all modes at all levels with the intention of preparing our students to develop into confident independent lifelong learners. Within the classroom, reception students have focused on topics that assist them to move on to mainstream classes. This vertical group have slowly learned to adapt to not only their learning at

Merit and Achieved. The students are to be commended for their mammoth efforts during the year, as many of them have only recently arrived in New Zealand and have a limited command of English. Well done class and their teacher Mrs Dallas Howell. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Year 13 ELL students and their families the best for their future,

to wish reception students transit to mainstream classes successfully and wish all ELL students make greater progress. As always, it has been a pleasure to see them grow into fine young people and to know that we have played a part in that development. Therefore, my great appreciation to our dedicated ELL staff, Dallas Howell, Chrissie Lee and Vaeluaga Faataloga. school but also their new life in New Zealand. The junior students have been improving their reading and writing skills and becoming confident and motivated learners. While the senior school this year had the challenge of the new EL unit standard assessments at all levels. Yet they have settled well as they began to work towards their credit attainment in NCEA and literacy. Level 1 English Achievement standards course is also introduced to the senior school for the first time. These have ensured that our courses meet the students’ learning needs and that our students all have a chance to achieve at their very best! This course has been very successful and the students have gained well-deserved grades of Excellence,

Education Support Centre Report As another year draws to a close and we draw breath to reflect on the things that have happened, celebrate successes, and farewell leavers, I would like to once again acknowledge that none of this would have been as much fun, or in fact possible without such a brilliant TEAM (Mrs T, Mrs G, Mrs Garg, Delvin and Ronald) in the Education Support Centre, or the support of the super teachers who have contributed so much to our students’ experience and success. We would especially like to thank Mr Van Garderen for giving us an extra Tech lesson and working with us to produce some exciting mosaics that will add to the welcoming atmosphere of our centre. In addition special mention must also go to the PE department, Mrs Bradford, and the

ESOL department for welcoming some of our students into their classes and the sterling work of the evergreen Mr Hogan, in ‘licking’ us into shape for the Special Olympic Soccer and Basketball To u r n a m e n t s . The Soccer Tournament was a highlight in terms of success as we achieved two first places and a second to win the overall competition. Ngahuia, Logan, Chantep and Mosiah have taken part in our work experience programme, and Nadirah, Rosemarie, Monica, Logan and Mosiah have completed supported learning unit standards at MIT. Trips to the Maritime Museum and the Tip Top Factory have helped show how what we do in class relates to the real world. We farewell Ngahuia and Mosiah this year and wish them well as they enter the adult world. We also farewell Mrs Gargiulo, who will be sadly missed. She has been a great part of our team, her empathy and passion to improve outcomes for our students and fight inequities wherever they arise will be sorely missed. I’m sure you’d like to join me in wishing her well for the future and hope she’ll continue to visit and maintain links with us all. As we look forward to 2016, a new year, new challenges, new students, new staff and more exciting things to come, we’d all like to take the opportunity to wish our students and their whanau a safe and peaceful holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again and renewing our acquaintance in 2016.

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics Department Notes

40

Bob Dylan wasn’t thinking of the Mathematics Workroom when he wrote “Knock, knock, knocking on Heaven’s door”. It has been a difficult year in many respects for some members of the department and it may be with a sense of relief when the year comes to a close. We can reflect positively though on the continued excellent results that our students achieve, especially in NCEA at the senior school level. Our departmental vision includes the belief that no student is more important than any other. We welcomed this year the Year 10 students from Hiranga for the first time, and many of them also made us proud with the achievements and progress that they made throughout the year. The 2014 results had brought us much cheer. With the loss of the unit standards we were wary that there would be a backward step in the contribution that the department makes to the overall school success. This was not the case. Of particular note were the large numbers who took on the ‘middle’ Mathematics course at Level 3. This course counts as a University Approved subject and with just on 60% of the 130 students gaining at least 14 credits, we could truly say that it was not mathematics which could be held responsible for the fall-off in the school’s overall pass rate in University Entrance. The Level 1 Numeracy rate was also notable. At 93% it exceeded that of many higher decile schools, and certainly almost all schools in South Auckland. We are acutely aware that this makes a

Mastere.indd 40

significant contribution to the overall Level 1 NCEA pass rate for the school. The number of students who received a Course Endorsement was up at both Levels 1 and 3, though we were once again reminded that the current Year 13 cohort is rather weaker than normal. The department personnel remained very stable and during the year there were no changes. We have been fortunate to retain the services of the younger teachers appointed over recent years and they add considerable strength to our programmes. The introduction of two BYOD classes at Year 9 resulted in more responsibility for Mrs Tuputupu and Mrs Chang as they came to grips with the reality and stresses associated with trial programmes. There was much learnt from the experiences of the students and the teachers involved, and those who follow will be much better prepared and realistic in their expectation. The afore-mentioned members of the department did provide highlights for us over the last twelve months. Mrs Tuputupu metamorphosed from Miss Mataele last December, while Miss Hou became Mrs Chang in the middle of the July holidays. Many departmental members attended the weddings which were both large and memorable occasions. Mrs Tuputupu provided further joy for us by delivering a baby daughter Meleane in October. It seemed that we all suffered the inconvenience of her expectant months, but delighted at what we think is the first birth in the department for nearly 20 years. Mrs Lal travelled to Cambodia with the school group in the September holidays while Mr Hufanga was the cocoach of the First Fifteen which carried off the Counties-Manukau First Fifteen title, defeating the strong Wesley College team in the final. Our junior students once again had the opportunity to compete in the Mathex Competitions. The Counties-Manukau competition was held at Strathallan College. Our teams struggled to make headway against strong opposition, and

it was unfortunate that the Year 9 teams had to compete against the Year 10’s due to the break-down of the mini-bus on the way. At the Auckland-wide competition held at the ASB Stadium the highlight of the night was the performance of the Year 9 teams. One team got to 80 points out of a possible 100 and were easily in the top echelon. It does appear that we have some exceptional talent in this year’s Year 9 intake. Mr Liu and Mrs Chang are to be congratulated for their dedication in the selection and preparation of these teams. The Australian Mathematics Competition results were also stronger than normal. For the first time for several years we had a High Distinction (top 2%), earned by Aaron Lew of 09KHR. There were also distinctions (top 15%) gained by Angel Aubrey Wihongi, John Chen and Aimee Lew (all 09KHR); and Kelecia Ma’aSefo-Clark (10PWY). These students are to be congratulated for such a high level of achievement. In keeping with the movement towards BYOD, we have had 16 red laptops domiciled in the downstairs area of the department. It is expected that these laptops will get increased use over time as teachers become used to this style of teaching and as the WiFi is improved in the area. Towards the end of the year we have embarked on a comprehensive review of our Years 9 and 10 schemes. This has been prompted by the increase in our Year 10 time from three to four periods a week in 2016. A major challenge for the department will be ensuring that this increase in time is matched by improved pedagogy and commitment in the classroom. A.R. Carey

VISION RESOURCE CENTRE

Don’t Limit Your Challenges - Challenge Your Limits Wow, who would think that this year has gone in the Vision Resource Centre (VRC) at Manurewa High School? As usual our students have played a full and active role in the life of the school. Be it academic, sport, cultural or whanau based, all junior and senior students excelled in all those areas. To live with and overcome the obstacles and indivisible barriers in order to carry on in life is remarkable and takes a certain fortitude that many people would not understand. This is one of the reasons why we are so proud of all the students in the VRC. We would like to thank Chrissie Lee for all her hard work and dedication to the students in the VRC. Chrissie has taken up a full time position in the ELL Department. In her place we welcomed Mari-Louise Jeftha who joined Delwyn Grey, Amrith Jaj and Reuben Brannon. As a team of Teacher Aides, a full time fixed Resource Teacher Vision (Belinda Biggs) and two visiting Resource Teachers Vision (Aimee Peterken and Lyndsey Starkey), we have provided enthusiastic and dedicated support to the students and enabled them to strive to reach their full potential in all academic areas. Our students compete on an equal footing with their peers with the use of specialist technology such as Laptops with software, IPads, electronic Braille note takers, digital cameras and a variety of tactile resources. Many class lesson resources have been formatted on site to suit the needs of the students so that the students have them in class

Mastere.indd 41

alongside their peers. We are continually updating and amending our huge resource collection of Braille, electronic documents and large print materials and therefore ensuring that the students who attend the resource centre have a superb resource immediately to hand on site. This year we had fourteen students attending the regular classes and supported by the Vision Resource Centre. At the end of this year we will farewell two Year 13 students. Shay Lupo 13PSZ who will attend the ‘Kickstart’ programme at BLENNZ Homai Campus in 2016 and Lavinia Vehikite 13PGB who will continue her studies at the University of Auckland. The other students will be staying with us next year to be joined by possible two new faces that will give us a total of fourteen students once again in the Vision Resource Centre in 2016. Throughout the year some of our students have been involved in various activities. With the support of the Remuera Rotary Club, students were able to attend the Blind Foundation Camp at the beginning of the year. The Halberg Disability Sport Trust also promoted Goalball at the school by sending us a team of coaches to train the students on Tuesdays during their lunch break. With the enthusiasm and commitment to the game, Naqibullah Alizadeh, Lopa Simeona M. and a sighted peer Shekar Paliwal competed with Regional teams in preparation for Nationals. All 3 boys made it to the Nationals and their dream is to compete in World Championships in 2017. We would like to thank the coaches for all their hard work and helping the students to achieve well in sport activities. James Heria-Layne, Ana Luani and Shakiro O’Brien attended an Immersion Course at Blind and Low Vision Education Network New Zealand (BLENNZ) at the beginning of this year. They attended a 3 day workshop on how to define their learning skills, study skills and creating a study environment at home. They enjoyed the opportunity to network with like-minded students across the country. Michael Chopra and Naomi MacKinnon attended an Immersion Course at BLENNZ called “Step Up to Independence”. They also attended JAWS and BME training. The purpose of this course was for students to gain skills

41

and develop confidence in using screen reading software (JAWS and NVDA) to access information on their laptops and help them to compose songs using software (Braille Music Editor-BME). Ask Naomi what the benefits were of attending these course and she replied: “I will be able to access visual content and a whole lot of information faster once I have learned all the basic commands. I will be able to still use braille however, I will have a diverse range of new skills to help me in the near or distant future”. Lavinia Vehikite (Yr13) has achieved some amazing academic results as well. Her dedication and hard work paid off when she achieved Level 2 with an excellence endorsement. She continued to work hard and most of her achievements this year is of excellence standard. We are very proud of her. Lavinia aspires to become a nurse and travel to her country of birth (Tonga) to practice as a medical practitioner. She has been awarded a scholarship and work experience with Hubbards. She is a positive role model to all with an exciting future ahead and we wish her well in all her endeavours. It has been a fantastic year watching all the students grow in confidence as they meet each challenge they are presented with. The Vision Resource Centre at Manurewa High School will continue to support students in all areas of their academic study in the regular classes with more passion and enthusiasm to succeed under the vision of BLENNZ which is “Equity through access - opening doors so all may learn.” and Manurewa High School which is “Aim High-Strive for Excellence – Piki Atu ki te Rangi” The PAST is where you learned the lesson. The FUTURE is where you apply the lesson.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Truly International

45

The international students this year are a very international group. At the beginning of the year we welcomed Jessica Wu and Jack Chen who were students from one of our partnership schools in China, YiChun No 1 High School. They joined Ricardo Chen, also from YiChun, who returned for his final year. Scott and Jezebel Cristofari arrived from Italy, while Apan Grewal enrolled from India later in the year as did Miew Viriyaarcha joining Aditep Rintha, another student from Thailand. Our Cambodian student is Oudom Seng who returned this year along with Lucy Nguyen and Anh Nguyen, both from Vietnam, and Tina Zhao from Guangzhou, China. Because of their individual programmes, trips are the only opportunity for the international students to come together as a group. There have again been trips to restaurants, a dolphin tour on the Hauraki Gulf for Tina Zhao before she left to return to China, ice skating and a trip to Hobbiton. Manurewa High School hosted two very successful short tours; one from Utsunomiya, Japan and the second from our other partnership school in China, Jingmen No 1 High School. The students again had a great time and enjoyed themselves immensely. A highlight for the year is the first ever tour by five Manurewa High School students to our China partnership schools in December which will also include several days in Beijing. These students have already met some Jingmen students and are looking forward to a trip of a lifetime. The international programme at Manurewa High School is indeed becoming very international!

TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Year 9 Technology

46 Year 9 Technology classes have all been having great fun working in Technology. The students have been sewing up a storm in Textiles, sharpening their pencils and minds in Design and Drawing, whipping up some treats in Food, and spreading sawdust in Hard Materials. After the students had finished working with their teachers, they then designed a larger project. This required lots of thinking and hard work but at the end there were some fantastic results.

Year 10 Product Launch LOGAN SPENCER: “The Product Launch is about students from different food classes battling it out and trying to sell their differently designed snack foods to other students and teachers in our school.”

AOTEAROA LEFAOSEU: “The product launch was about creativity and variety of different types of cultural foods. It was also an opportunity for students to invent their own unique creations. I enjoyed the amount of different foods there were and the traditions they tied in with their display stall.”

JAHNE TEHAKI: “It was about launching my product. Making a product that my partner and I have chosen. I liked that we got to keep all the money we raised and selling the food. I enjoyed making a product I enjoy eating.”

Brett McGregor Visit

In Term 2, Brett McGregor from MasterChef came and showed our class chopping skills, hygiene and safety rules about cooking at home but mainly simple, easy recipes we could all prepare and eat at home. The food he made was quick, tasty and easy to prepare and we really enjoyed eating the food!! We would like to thank Brett McGregor and Countdown for taking the time to come to our school and show us how easy and much fun cooking can be. - Dania, Camella, Jennifer, Victoria and Malupo

03 Trades Academy Built-Ability Challenge Our talented Level 3 Technology students built an awesome playhouse for the BuildAbility Challenge run by the construction industry training organisation (BCITO). The playhouse concept was inspired from a children's book, which featured a triangular-shaped garden shed, designed to fit into a corner.

Mastere.indd 47

Through the process, the students learnt about design, materials, construction and finishing. Eventually, it will be sold on Trade Me and the use of an innovative flat-

pack approach to its design means the playhouse can be easily transported and assembled in its new home. Proceeds will go to the charity, Kids Can.

MUSIC

Music Notes

48 In 2014 we fairwelled Ms Cuizon and Mr Wilson. It is always a worry when you have to replace good staff members but this year we were lucky enough to welcome Mr Stainbridge, Ms Fong, Mr Muir and Miss Laulu into the Music Family.

along with Tequilla Moses on guitar) won her the best song award, which is another huge achievement and deservingly so, as her song mixed up the feel of Norah Jones with Rapha’s own unique twist. Huge congratulations to all involved.

SMOKEFREE PACIFICA BEATS

STAND UP, STAND OUT 2015 (SUSO)

Students from Manurewa High School were out in force for the 2015 Smokefree Pacifica Beats Heats. Four bands and a plethora of singer/songwriters donned their best cultural outfits and performed at a high level. This was the debut performance for many of the bands, including the eight strong ‘Blessed’, the Year 9 funk reggae group ‘Deez Coconuts’ and the two-man guitar duo ‘MusGuitars’. Nesian Vibes made a triumphant return to the stage and continued on to the Auckland Regional finals, along with Year 10 singer/songwriter Sonatane Kaufusi, who both put on energetic performances, and only narrowly missing out on a spot towards the National Finals. It was also the debut performance for many of our singer/songwriters, including more of our fantastic Year 10 students like Sally and Kravtiz. The Music Department is looking forward to presenting an even greater range of talent for the competition in 2016, so watch this space!

SMOKEFREE ROCKQUEST The mighty Zerreria returned to the Auckland Smokefree Rockquest Regional Finals with one of the more true rock performances of the night. They mixed up punk and heavy metal with a camo gear image that really added to the overall production. This is the last year that Zerreria will be performing with original members as Hayden, Jamie, Daniel and Thongchai (keep rocking the duck walk buddy) are all in their final year, so congratulations for a fantastic final performance. Keep an eye on guitarist Devontaye Wijohn, who will no doubt have a trick up his sleeve for a 2016 performance. In the singer/songwriter section, Raah Papa was awarded best female musician, an award that should not come as a surprise to anyone in attendance. Raah has the ability to command the attention of an audience with her voice, and she certainly turned up the volume for this one. The debut performance of Rapha Sanglap (Year 11,

Mastere.indd 48

It was a truly sensational year for Manurewa High School students at the 2015 Stand Up, Stand Out performance. Nesian Vibes yet again performed their way to the finals. Their performance on the final night, at a packed Vodafone Events Centre, was described by one judge as a “at the level of an international act”, which was enough for them to win the entire band category. Nesian Vibes practiced morning, day and night for this competition and the result was truly exceptional. During the Regional Finals, Singer Phillip Te’lea was involved in an impromptu performance of ‘Lean on Me’ which became a viral internet hit, reaching over 500,000 views across the globe. It was aptly titled ‘…Meanwhile in Otara’ and is just another reason that the world needs to take notice of the creativity happening here. Faasolo Moaanu and Finau Fulivai, both drummers, earned a spot in the top five instrumentalists and were both praised for their creativity and spot on timing. Finau, who is only Year 9, took out the best instrumentalist award with a drum solo that lifted the roof off of the Vodafone Events Centre. On a side note, Finau also went on to take out the Auckland drum-off award, which was against industry professionals. Make sure you catch him perform before he gets the big jobs!

CONCERT BAND TRIP TO QUEENSLAND We took a touring party of 40 to the Brisbane and the Gold Coast and had 8 days packed full of performances, rehearsals, and fun! We were lucky enough to workshop music with top conductors and played with and performed concerts with two of Brisbane’s best music schools, this included playing in St Peter’s Lutheran Colleges’ new multi-million dollar Auditorium. Students also visited Australia Zoo, Dreamworld and the Lone Pine koala Sanctuary. The trip was rounded off with a performance

at the Brisbane City Band Festival where the students did themselves and the school proud receiving great feedback and a score of 90%, congratulations Mr Stanbridge! Special thanks to Mr Muir and Mrs Telford for all the hours of preparation and to Ms Fong for joining us.

KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL KBB music festival is always a highlight of our year. This year marked the first year of Mr Stanbridge directing the concert bands. Both the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony did themselves very proud and earnt themselves Bronze Medals. It is at this stage too that we farewell all the Year 13 students who have made such a valuable commitment over the years: Aaron Dormer, Dayna Lowry, Ben Yelda, Chris Emmanuel, Mele Tapueluelu, Helen Lesa, Jessie Chen, Tessa Dreadon, Justine Pearce and Thongchai Manawangphiphat Jazz Band started late this year due to the production being on in Term 2. A demanding rehearsal schedule involving almost every lunch time in Term 3 meant a Silver Medal and our best performance in several years.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL The Production of ‘High School Musical’ was both a focus and a highlight of the Year. The music was fun to play and helped us start a new ensemble, an American style Drumline! We also called in some support from Alumni: Michaela Clark, Mitchell Clark and Michael Telford. Their support was essential in ensuring such a success. The show was a great triumph, with Leads, Chorus and Band doing exceptional jobs.

CHOIR We were lucky enough to gain Ms Fong in science. Ms Fong is an accomplished chorister and has taken on the role of choir director. With lots of rehearsals and workshops and Mrs Louman on the piano I’m sure this is an area that we will hear a lot more of in 2016!

HALP 2015

“Chomreabsuor Cambodia”

50

The HALP trip 2015 has been a very spectacular adventure. Every day felt like it was two days in one. It was absolutely full on and we were always busy, which was intense and enjoyable. In September a group of staff and students – 21 in total – once again headed to Cambodia with the hope of discovering something not only about themselves but also another culture. It was an

balance of playing tourist and exploring and experiencing the country and being exposed to humanitarian projects, which were the highlights of the trip! The activities we did over the ten days were varied and included: an ox cart ride, a canoe trip on Lotus Lake, a boat trip on Tonle Sap to the floating village, cooking schools, visits to artisan centres, sunrises at Angkor Wat, elephant rides around other temples, seeing ‘tomb raider’

opportunity to challenge what we find normal, challenge ourselves every day, push boundaries of what we knew and develop lifelong skills. It was truly a trip of discovery, of self and of the world. We hit the ground running and just a couple hours after arrival we were off and exploring. We started the trip in Siem Reap, before heading south to a town call Pursat and then finishing in Phnom Penh. Over the ten days there was a

Mastere.indd 50

temples, a visit to the Royal Palace, cultural performances as well as a visit or two to local markets where we practiced our bartering skills. We also spent time learning about the history of the country and the impact the Khmer Rouge has had on the country when we visited S21 and the Killing fields. We were lucky enough to be able to meet and listen to the only two remaining survivors of the genocide at S21 and hear their stories.

On the humanitarian aid side we also did a lot - visits to two different world vision communities to see and speak with the two students that the school sponsors. It was empowering spending time with the people who have benefited from the fundraisers that we do in school, because we saw the improvement of the livelihood in the community. We also paired up with ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) to build two child shelters and

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL | 2015 2 fences around ponds. What we did in these villages may seem like a small thing, but to them it’s a big thing. Their children can now get together under shelter to learn, something they couldn’t do before. We also visited the 2 of the special Kantha Bopha children’s Hospital. We went to a concert and presentation from Dr. Beat Richner (Nobel Prize winner for his work in paediatrics in the country) and some students gave bood to the children’s hospital. A special night trip out included Phare, The Cambodian Circus. Where they take street kids from the street and train them in acrobatics giving them a meaningful way to support themselves. Finally we finished the trip off

Mastere.indd 51

at an orphanage – Centre for Children’s Happiness where we painted a mural and spent a great afternoon playing games with the children. We come from two different countries, yet it’s possible to identify the true meaning of happiness. Happiness comes from within and regardless of the children’s surroundings, their happiness was real despite their struggle. It was the same with our projects in the villages as well. True happiness. The hope is that students and staff have gained knowledge and appreciation from this trip. It was an adventure of enriching the lives of others and helping those who are in need.

A massive thank you to those who got us there, whether it was buying chocolates, a grant (International Travel College and Simon Hocking at House of Travel), or those in the background with all the little jobs that meant the trip was a success. We might be the ones fortunate enough to experience it, but without this support it simply wouldn’t happen. Another very successful adventure for life.

Japan Trip 2015

52

STUDENTS’ THOUGHTS #1 Going to Japan this year was one of the greatest experiences I could have ever imagined. The trip gave me the chance to create bonds with new people and strengthen bonds with my friends. Japan is such a beautiful country and the people there are very kind and very welcoming. Highlights of the trip include; being able to experience the culture with my host families and getting to see how they live in their homes, tasting different types of new food, visiting an elementary school and watching the students serve their classes and clean up after themselves, seeing the different cities and sights, and visiting Tokyo Disneyland. I would definitely recommend the trip to students in future as it is an amazing experience that you will always cherish. Rebecca Gibson

Samoan Heat, Samoan Food, Samoan People & Samoan Culture!

54

You will never find such authenticity of people, food and culture than in Samoa. This year marks the second trip to Samoa for the Year 12 & 13 Samoan Language classes, where they worked hard to complete 2 standards each and were fully immersed in the culture of Samoa. We arrived into Faleolo airport and greeted with a flow of heat and no amount of fanning gave any sort of cool breeze. We walked through customs and through the crowds to get to our luggage, we fought our way through the many people awaiting the arrival of their loved ones and also family members who came to welcome our group. We gathered together in our meeting area checked out our 2 vans to make sure they were functional and able to get us from A to B, packed all our luggage and the group into our vans and headed off to Apia to our accommodation for 1 night. The early morning rise on Thursday morning was no use because we still missed the 8am ferry to Savai’i but on arrival we managed to cram into the 12pm ferry all 16 of us and our 2 vehicles. We arrived to Savai’i and made a quick visit to the main markets where there was an array of beautiful fruits and the smell of the Samoan cocoa (koko) filling the air. Once we arrived to our Savai’i accommodation at Lauiula Beach Fales we took in the great scenery of sparkling waters, clear white sand and the cleanliness of the area. The group didn’t waste any time getting into the water and enjoyed the cool sea water on a very hot day.

The group visited great places in Savai’i – Lava Village in Saleaula, Falealupo Canopy Walk and Alofaaga Blowholes in Taga. We also managed to slip into the Falealupo Primary School during their lunch break and enjoyed running around with the students before heading off to the canopy walk. The group also visited great places in Upolu – The climb up Mount Vaea, Samoa Museum, Piula Cave Pools, Matareva Beach, Leififi College, Paddles Restaurant, Amanaki Restaurant and Tusitala Fiafia Night. The students and staff on the trip were like family and appreciated the people and culture of Samoa. The students managed to complete their assessments with ease and at the same time met great people, ate amazing food, experienced amazing attractions, got told off by the police twice, got involved with students from a primary and secondary school and saw their principal Mr Gargiulo dance solo in front of Leififi College students and staff. Such a great experience and such a great group, thank you to the Miss Malaeimi and the Gargiulos for their continuous support, laughs, talks and work especially with the students. Gateway

66

Gateway is a programme funded by the Tertiary Education Commission that enables senior students to learn and gain NZQA credits while in the workplace. It is designed to make learning relevant and to broaden student’s options while enabling schools to help their students by strengthening the range of career pathways. Continuing on from the success of 2014, Gateway has been a wonderful opportunity for many of our senior students this year. In total, 92 students attended work experience in a number of local industries including retail, nursing, early childhood education, office administration, banking, sport & recreation, travel & tourism, engineering, police, information technology as well as McDonalds, Gate Gourmet and Happy Days Family Restaurant. Many of these opportunities are provided by local businesses who year after year continue to work together with the school and those students enrolled in the Gateway programme. For that we are extremely grateful as without them this programme

As Manurewa High’s archivist my job is caring for all the “old stuff ”. A good proportion of my time in 2015 has been taken up with scanning all the school magazines and putting them online. So far I have done all the yearbooks (magazines) from the school’s first year (1960) up to 2000. I’ll get the remaining 15 years done early next year. If you run out of things to do in the holidays, try looking at some of these magazines. Go to the school website and click on the link to “Alumni”. That’s a fancy name for “past students”. On the Alumni page you can click on “Download copies of the school magazine”. Since many of your parents and other relatives came to Manurewa High you might like to see their class photos from when they

would not be possible. This year we established networks with three more industries that were willing to work with the school. The first was the ANZ bank in Takanini, where students were placed one day per week for 5 weeks in the bank, learning the role of banking staff performing their daily duties. They also were made aware of the skills necessary to work in the banking environment. Secondly Clendon Park New World Supermarket had students for one day a week for 5 weeks stocking shelves or unloading cartons from containers, introducing them to the world of work in a very practical way. Brodie Johnstone pictured left, has scored himself part time work through this Gateway Programme. Thirdly, with continued support from The Warehouse our students had the opportunity to work at Warehouse Stationery in Manukau. This programme is known as Blue Shirts in Schools as opposed to the Red Shirts in Schools programme run at The Warehouse. The format is the same as students work one day per week for 10 weeks in the retail environment earning 27 level 2 credits and if successful, they may be employed on a part time basis Josiah Ru has just landed himself work at Warehouse Stationery.

were here and get some idea what school life was like back then. You will also see how magazine production and presentation has changed. In the early days all the print was done on a typewriter and the paper used was cheap. Until the 1990s no pictures were in colour. This year’s magazine is a far classier production due to the use of 21st century technology. From time to time students contact me asking if I have any magazines from their years at the school since theirs have been lost. Putting them all online will hopefully satisfy this desire to revisit the past. Between leaving my parents’ house, getting married and shifting house 4 times I too have lost all the magazines from my years at high school. Recently

a reunion for students of the 1990s was held and I found that many were in the same position, having lost all their school magazines. I normally come to the school only one day a week and work from the little office upstairs in the library. Since I not only have collections of items from 1960 but also have been on the staff myself (as a teacher from 1964 until 2005 and Archivist since then) I would be able both to show you and tell you quite a bit about the past at Manurewa High. I would be only too happy to chat with you about these things. David Voisey Manurewa High School Archivist

Careers 2015 has been a great year! At last we are fully staffed and the department can now provide students with even more Career opportunities. Mr Lawton our Workplace Coordinator ‘extraordinaire’, continues to establish many new business contacts enabling our students to participate in a wide variety of Gateway and STAR courses. Ms Poatama who has been with us for 8 years now continues to deliver efficient administration for the department and friendly personal assistance to many of you. In Term 2 we were delighted to appoint a second Careers Counsellor. We welcome Mr Craik who is an experienced teacher and counsellor and who has made significant inroads in helping us to develop and chaperone a wider range of programmes for our students such as; Yr 10,11 and 12 PILOT Career days; STEAM Ahead University of Auckland Campus Day for Yr 13s interested in studying Science/Technology or Architecture / Engineering/ Medical and Health Sciences; Katti for Yr 10s; as well as interviewing all Yr 12s and counselling

Yr 11s with their option choices for next year. Many of our 16+ year olds have registered with the Solomon Group for ongoing mentoring until they are over 18. By registering and then passing NCEA , these students have each earned a $100 voucher! We encourage you all to read the notices and join our Facebook page to find out what you might be entitled to. Another financial opportunity for any 18 year old students attending school full time, is to find out if you are suitable to receive a student allowance while still at secondary school check out www. studylink.govt.nz/student-allowance this may come in handy next year. We have had a record year with the number of you wanting to pass your learner driving licence for half the cost. So far 80% have sat and passed with the rest yet to organize an appointment. Tuition is held before and after school for anyone over 16 years. You can practice a selection of the real tests online by using our resource - R:\Careers\Learners Licence.

67 On August 4 we held our biennial Careers Expo in school. This was the first time we have held it during the school day for Year 11, 12 and 13 students which ensured an enthusiastic captive audience and students were able to gain information on future opportunities in training and work. Thanks go to our newly appointed student Careers Ambassadors for their help in running this successful event. With many of you heading off to tertiary education, we have been kept busy assisting with course and scholarship funding applications. Although all applications have yet to be processed or confirmed, we are pleased to acknowledge those of you who have been successful so far – well done! It really is worth the effort to spend a few hours for such monetary rewards! For those of you returning next year, best of luck with your exams and we look forward to discussing your future with you in 2016.

ALUMNI CONNECTION

90s-Era Reunion

68 A passionate group of around 75 students and staff from the 90s era came together over Labour Weekend for a reunion event organised by alumni Kareem Brown and Marcus Winter. The pair have become involved in the school in recent years, working with teachers and students. They share not only their experiences as a musician and an artist respectively, they also take the time to develop students’ sense of opportunity for the future, and respect for the past. Speaking at the opening night “roll call”, Principal Salvatore Gargiulo says this type of connection is important

for our students. “We have really capable kids, who often have no idea what they want to do when they leave school.” The first event, on Friday night, included alumni and their families and featured a tribute by Marcus to alumni who have died. It was sad to see so many names. We also showcased the skills of our Hospitality and Catering students, who prepared and served a supper of woodfired pizzas from our on-site ovens. On Saturday afternoon, many of the crew gathered in the gymnasium for badminton, basketball and volleyball. It was also a chance to tour the

school, and stimulate memories. On Saturday evening, we partied in the hall, with 90s music by alumni Djwoody (James Woods) and a band of stars, including alumni Waipounamu Silbery, Daniel Te’o and Kareem. Photographs were taken by Matangaro Paerau, also an alumni. Proceeds from the reunion will go towards the MHS Business Academy, including an inspirational new building to be constructed in an area near the pool and gymnasium.

Other activity in 2015

Alumni John and Leonie Hynds, from the 1960s era, are the driving force behind the development of the MHS Business Academy. They have also been the catalyst for alumni connections to grow. This year students have benefited from these connections in a wide range of ways including: • Tertiary education scholarships. • Work experience opportunities. • Opportunities for skills development in the Arts, Science, and Technology • Presentations in the classroom and at school events.

Christian Fellowship Christian Fellowship has for long been a successful and a loving group. Students involved partake in studying of the scripture and growing independently as well as within a group. Christian Fellowship is twice a week during lunch times and is not a classroom where your name will be checked but it is a place where students attend to be encouraged and also encourage each other. Students are given the opportunity to also lead sessions. The things we learn are used to help us not only at school but also in our daily lives by being selfmotivated and changing the way we think about stuff and letting our actions speak. Christian fellowship is not just for Christians but it is open and welcomed to anyone. So we encourage everyone that is interested to get involved next year. “Being in the Christian Fellowship team has helped me communicate and form strong bonds with people from entirely different backgrounds and has also given me the ability to reach out to those in need without hesitation. The skills I have gained from Christian

Fellowship will definitely be applied in my everyday life”. (Linh Pham 13KGU) In term 3 we had our second ever EXCHANGE outreach event. It was hosted and led by our very own students at Manurewa High School which was a successful outcome that not only allowed students to enjoy the entertainment, songs of worship and praise, food and also the words of encouragement. But most importantly youth that attended from around the community gained insight of themselves in a spiritual level that would independently be difficult to do so. On behalf of the Christian fellowship students we would like to thank the Performers and speakers for sharing their gifts and using their talents to bring glory to God. Thank you

69

to the New Life church for stepping in and helping us make this event happen. We would also like to acknowledge the production team Aaron, Sean and Prinesh. Massive thank you also to the staff, Ms Ta’eiloa, Ms Tuputupu, Mr Viliamu, Ms Laulu, Ms Leatinuu and the rest of the teachers that stood by and supported the students through this event. A Special Thank you to the mains Mr Hendrikse and Mr Bingham because without them there would be no Christian Fellowship program giving students the opportunity to lead and partake in events like EXCHANGE. Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Mele Tapueluelu 13ABA

Hillary Outdoor Experience

The Hillary outdoor experience is an amazing way to get away from civilization and be able to appreciate the outdoors. In a remote area by the great Mt Tongariro enabled us to get to know the what it really feels like to live in the outdoors. We were fortunate enough to participate in many activities including hiking, high ropes, canoeing and even jumping of a waterfall, to name a few. These activities were amazing and made us realize what we had been missing out on by simply caring to much about technology. We also had the luxury of bonding with another school as well as our peers from our school which allowed us to be closer and resulted in laughter and smiles throughout the camp. In the end the Hillary experience taught us that there is more to life than technology and that we as people of society need to be more active and "get out there". Osaiasi Langi

The Hillary Outdoors Camp was an amazing experience. It offered us so many opportunities to gain life skills in so many areas. From climbing a mountain, to setting up a camp site, we were constantly learning; whether it be how to properly start a fire or how to work better as a team. While we took away a lot of knowledge and skills from The Hillary Outdoors Camp, the most significant thing we took away was our bonds with our group members, teachers and even instructors. We were split into groups with people we didn't know, and made to constantly work together over the course of the week to complete tasks that we would never be able to complete ourselves, and face our own personal fears. This meant that by then end of the week we were close friends with even those we had never met before. All of these points combined made this a very memorable and enjoyable experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Luke Stainthorpe

What an impressive year, the best on record. It began early term one with the Regional 7s Championships which doubled as qualifiers for the New Zealand Condors – Secondary Schools Nationals. Our senior boys and girls teams coached by Jordan Cama, Tevita Hufanga and Mel Martene, managed by Donella McPherson and Maggie Silva were quick to assert some early dominance at the one day tournament. Neither team failed to impress with both teams performing consistently throughout the day. Standout performers Haupeke Brown, Niko Moala, Aki Piliu and Grace Gago ensured their charges tasted final success – MHS took both the boys and girls finals very convincingly in the U19 category, qualifying for Condors for the first time. 7s was just the beginning, it was the year for “first times”. The 15s season started term two, the teams were: 1st XV boys coached by Deon Wagner and Tevita Hufanga managed by Ben Silk. 1st XV girls coached by Mel Martene and managed by Donella McPherson, 2nd XV boys coached by Hogan Chapman and Lando Sialeipata and managed by Fiona Toloa, 3rd XV boys coached by Glenn Goodwin and managed by Ngataki Tukahia and Rangi Hollis, U15s Gold coached and managed by Claire Hunter with support from 1st XV boys Mua Tuumaialu, Uati Aso and Joseph Ligaliga, U15s Green coached by Faataloga Vaeluaga and Delvin Godinet and managed by Alan Williams, U14s Black coached by Shaun Atamu and Darryl Robson and managed by Eddie and Anton Hokai and lastly U14s Red coached by Kaybe Kaufusi and managed by Salvi Gargiulo.

Mastere.indd 70

It was evident early that there was something about this year’s teams, a culture, a belief, a common goal, it was exciting. The hard work, determination and countless hours training most definitely paid off with MHS taking five championship titles, the most ever! The third consecutive title for our 1st XV girls’ team. We have to commend the players for their efforts but none of it would’ve been possible without the management teams. Our U14s 7s team capped the season off with another success, the boys and management also took the Super 7s U14 restricted title. The talent, brotherhood and attitudes of these young men hold our schools Rugby future in good stead.

The good people looking after our teams and guiding them throughout the season helped produce historical results talent alone isn’t enough. It’s a testament to all involved, a glimpse of what we can all do with the right attitudes and work ethic. We of MHS are the makers of our own destinies.

SENIOR AUCKLAND CHAMPS

What a year 2015 was, nothing came easily that’s for sure. This year’s achievements started November 2014 when the decision was made to transition our MHS paddlers through to Club, it meant a long slog was ahead starting with summer holiday trainings. When winter rolled in and temperatures dropped trainings continued, rain, hail, wind and huge swells – all added to the fun. NZ Club Sprint Nationals in January was used as a development tool, a gauge to see where the teams were compared to others, the campaign wasn’t results focused, yet for the J16, J19 boys and J19 mixed to make top 8, it let us know we were heading in the right direction. The summer sprint and winter marathon club seasons produced some encouraging results but ultimately, mentally and physically prepared the paddlers for the NZSS Nationals in March, NZ Club Marathon Nationals in April and the Australian Tour in September. Some strong performances were on display during NZSS Nationals with NZs best all vying for top honours. It was a successful campaign and those that medalled

undoubtedly deserved them. MHS was back on the podium. Gubbi Gubbi Trans Tasman Festival held on Australia’s Sunshine Coast had three purposes. Paddler development, reward for assiduous commitment, and for us as coaches to learn more about the characters of our paddlers in preparation for 2016. It was a huge effort from all involved and we wouldn’t have been able to get there without each other. Thank you to the School for allowing us to attend, our families for working hard with fundraising to come up with $46,000 and most importantly to the paddlers that put up with everything that I threw at them. The racing was first class, the weather was unforgiving but welcomed, the food was delicious, Movie World, Wet n Wild and Sea World ticked the reward aspect and the shopping was a much needed fix. All in all – brilliant tour, thank you to Maggie Silva for planning and organising everything. May 2016 the IVF Va’a World Championships hosted by Australia, that’s the next target for our J16 boy’s squad. Make no mistake this year is just the beginning.

Volleyball was another highlight of our sporting program 2015, as always it began with our junior program 2014 where a group of boys with a common mission dominated the competition. Goes to show what can happen as a result of dedication and trust – dedication to trainings and games, trust in each other and their team policies. Both the junior boys and girls from 2014 had successful Auckland seasons, the boys then went on to stamp their mark on the North Island Championships. Some believe a talented team will prevail against all odds, I disagree, it’s about a combination of things – talent is one, attitude, accountability and adjustment are a few more but one that cannot be overlooked is team culture, something Claire Hunter instilled in her young boys team. Sitting in the stands in Wellington watching the North Islands final vs Western Heights I could see the difference between us and them – that difference was culture and brotherhood. Thank you to coaches Niko Ngwun and Kevin Kelsall and managers Sharlene Malaeimi and Claire Hunter for your continued support Senior season began week 2 term

1, 2015. There were high hopes that the seniors could emulate the junior’s success, but there is a huge difference between the calibre of players and teams from juniors to seniors. Senior sport is ruthless, borders on high performance in some cases. With that in mind we still had fantastic results and there was some outstanding Volleyball on display during the Auckland Championships. That was noted by the selectors and organisers who loaded the tournament teams with MHS players – totally deserved too. We even took the boys MVP title – well done Tala Potifara. Post MHS season saw Henry A’pe, Tala Potifara and Wanyae Suafoa selected for the NZ Youth U17 team that travelled to Thailand, their selection was testament to their passion and commitment to the sport – thank you to the School for helping ensure the boys got there. That is the kind of talent we have here at MHS, not just in Volleyball but in many sports, I’m excited to see what 2016 holds in store for us. Next season will see the all-conquering 2014 junior boys team reunited, with hard work the same results are possible.

Rugby League Report Coach Wayne Bailey, assistant Tyrone Falasia, manager Sommie Pere and the boys had high hopes for their second campaign together, but sport can be cruel, and this year the boys didn’t get the results they would’ve set out to achieve – the unavailability of 2014 Captain Erin Clark due to Warriors duties was inevitable, his leadership and game awareness was sorely missed. The 1st XIII led by Rugby Union convert Edward Fonoia and a powerhouse leadership group had an abundance of talent and experience, what seemed to be an ideal first up match vs Papatoetoe wasn’t to go our way. That was the

Mastere.indd 72

beginning of an undulating season. The CRL is one of the most fiercely contested competitions in Auckland and this year was no different, our 1st XIII needed a few results to go our way at the business end of the season, and like much of the officiating this year those results didn’t go the way we needed them to – such is sport. Results a side, there were some outstanding performances and memorable tries, a brotherhood forged that will no doubt live on long after high

school and, which is exciting, a new crop of year 11 and 12 boys with exceptional talent, 2016 will hopefully see the likes of Kiana Marshall and Giano Katipa steady the ship.

SPORTS REPORTS A definite highlight from the CRL was the naming of year 11 Joshua Uta as competition MVP. A deserving accolade for Josh who leaves his blood, sweat and heart out on the field more often than not, Josh also received the award for Best and Fairest at the NZSS Nationals – well done Josh. 2015 also saw the inclusion of a 2nd XIII grade. The MHS team coached by Peter Oliveti and Andrew Bingham and managed by Tashia Glendinning also experienced highs and lows. What started out as a group of boys who had a solid bond off

Athletics Report MHS has most certainly cemented a spot among the top athletics schools in Greater Auckland, one of the catalysts for this surge to success is former PE teacher turned Caretaker Deon Wagner. His knowledge, eye for potential and passion combined with our natural athleticism is a winning recipe. The results of his throwers are testimony to the fact. MHS has always competed at the Counties Manukau zones and every now and then we find someone special that takes it one step further to Auckland Champs. Now, it seems the sky is the limit with our first MHS athletics team since the late 1990s heading to NZSS Nationals, this December will see some of our best travel to Timaru in hopes of returning with some silverware. The team coached by Deon and managed by Katie Spraggon consists of many already successful athletes.

IT’S A THREEPEAT!!! Girls Rugby has a long and successful history here at Manurewa High School and the 2015 team has added to this history and once again the First XV Girls Rugby team have come out on top. For the third year in a row the team is the Counties-Manukau Champions!! Whilst it is perhaps one of the shortest seasons played it was a highly successful campaign. The team was once again coached by Mel Martene who continues to get the best out of each individual player ensuring success for the team as a whole. She was supported on-field by a strong player leadership team who led from the front. Aki Pilu (Captain), Caroline Pickering (Vice-Captain), Tasha ‘Smurfy’ Rata, Ana ‘Fish’ Mauia and Sita Aso. These girls lead from the front making use of their experience from previous years, to ensure success once again. Aki was this years’ top try scorer (8) but was supported by Gail Taumafai (5),
