MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Principal’s Report 2011 started off with very positive results from the NCEA achievements. There was a significant improvement at all levels as shown by the statistics on the NZQA website: 2008 2009 2010 Level 1 for Year 11 40.6% 45.6% 61.6% Level 2 for Year 12 49.3% 49.0% 59.0% Level 3 for Year 13 49.2% 46.0% 63.2%

voice. This voice had a lot to do with the introduction of the school values. R espect E xcellence W hanaungatanga A koranga Notes: Whanaungatanga - in the sense of whanau and school working together. Akoranga – in the sense of passionate learning and teaching.

A major contributor to this improvement was the introduction of the academic conferencing where over 85% of parents attended conferences with the form teacher and the student. There is no doubt that improvements occur best when the school and the home work together. It is encouraging that the attendance was even higher this year. The major development for 2011 has been the reintroduction of a house system by which the school has been divided into 4 Whanau groups – the names of which represent the school’s traditional colours: Ahi (Red) lead by Miss Donella McPherson, Kotuku (White) lead by Miss Julie Purcell, Pounamu (Green) lead by Mr Ed Hendrikse and Te Ao Mārama (Yellow) lead by Miss Manaia Laulu. This was a major development; I thank and congratulate the many students and staff who got in behind this initiative. It does mean we have more opportunity for student leadership and student

The challenge for the school is to build on both of these developments and use them to enhance many programmes. As can be seen in this publication, Manurewa High School continues to achieve at the highest level in so many areas. You will read of top performance in sport, arts, music and academically. What impresses me most about the school is; while these achievements are noteworthy, the culture of the school maintains an open friendliness, a genuine enjoyment of each other and life. This culture is not something that can quickly be introduced into a school, it comes over a long period of time and the school must look back into its history to recognise the strength and value of such a culture. One person who has a long involvement in this history is Mrs Elizabeth Dixon. She has had a range of roles in the school over her 37 years and will be missed when she retires at the end of this year. It is with much appreciation that I thank Liz for all she has done for the school and on a

personal level how much she has done to assist me in becoming Principal. She is a magnificent woman with high values, work ethic and friendly personality. Liz represents the culture which is Manurewa High School. Once again I hope you enjoy reading this publication which is a tribute to the successes of both students and staff at Manurewa High School in 2011. Board of Trustees 2011 Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Nihao, Nisam Bula, Salaam Alekum, Namaste, Guten tag, Bonjour and Greetings. Hi, my name is Steve Smith and I am currently serving as the Board Chairperson on Manurewa High School Board of Trustees. The following report is to highlight and share some of the many exciting events that have taken place throughout the year with you all. This year under the Academic leadership of our Principal Mr Gargiulo and with the support of staff, we are breaking down the barriers of learning for our students. The establishment of the whanau system has contributed towards a family culture in teams providing support for each student through their peers. The continued support by students, parents and caregivers in regards to the student achievement conferences held throughout the year has been very encouraging. Students have shown commitment to their learning, a drive towards personal goals, and above all else perseverance and sacrifice consistently throughout the year. However students’ successes do not happen by osmosis but through the time, synergies, passion and expertise that their teachers impart within the classroom and often going beyond and above requirements to ensure that students are given the best possible chance to succeed. Last but not least to the families, thank you for your ongoing support of students, teachers and the school. Educational success is made possible when families, teachers and schools work together to support students learning.

The Board of Trustees acknowledges the dedication of Senior Management, Teaching and Non-teaching Staff under the strong and sound leadership of Principal Salvitori Gargiulo, Second Principal Liz Dixon each with their individual flair and style of leadership that has contributed to a collective approach towards a school culture of excellence. And invaluable to the on-going success of the school and

celebrated today as in previous years. A tradition of excellence and success through strategic planning, sound financial management ensuring that the school is strongly positioned to move forward into the future. To all parent volunteers who provided much support, coaching and enthusiasm to all our students throughout the year a special thank you and we look forward to your continued support next year. The School Board of Trustees would like to bid farewell to all graduating students and wish them success in their future pathways. We look forward to meeting and welcoming new students and parents to Manurewa High School. Kind Regards, Steve Smith

Throughout the year our students have participated in many varied activities such as Sports, Arts, and Academia at National levels. Attending the Sports, Arts and Maori achievement prize givings in October followed by the Academic prize giving for years 11, 12 and 13 recently was humbling and a privilege to witness, celebrate and share with students and staff the many accolades awarded. The greatest reward was seeing the joy that students experienced from the well-earned recognition by their peers and families making up for those thought-provoking times during the year worthwhile.

for your time and commitment during a challenging but rewarding year. Your contributions throughout the year have been invaluable in sharing the role of governance, ensuring all students and staffs are supported in reaching their potential, by addressing their concerns and acknowledging the aspirations of parents and students at Manurewa High School and by working alongside the Principal, staff, and students.

To our Board members, thank you

Farewell Mrs Dixon “Forty years on when afar and asunder, Parted are those who are singing today, When you look back and forgetfully wonder What you were like in your work and your play…” A Huge, fond farewell to Mrs Liz Dixon – our Second Principal, our Lizzie. Mrs Dixon started her career at Manurewa High School on the 1st February 1975. Mrs Dixon was originally employed as a Home Room Teacher from 1975 – 1978 when she then became a Guidance Teacher. In 1982 she was appointed to the position of Guidance Counsellor, which then, in 1984 became Guidance Co-ordinator. Liz was then appointed to the position of Deputy Principal in 1987 and then in 1989 she was appointed to the position of Associate Principal (renamed Second Principal), the position in which she currently holds and retires from at the end of the 2011 school year. Mrs Dixon has also been acting Principal on a number of occasions, most recently in 2009. During her 37 years of service at Manurewa High, Liz has been involved in most aspects of school life, from organising trips to Hawaii and Japan, organising the Choir and Concert Band trip to Canada and USA ….. To the welfare and well-being of all students and staff who attended MHS during her time. Liz’s knowledge of students past and present is amazing. She can recall students who came here, who now, in turn, have their own children attending here as students, and also, the students who have returned here as staff, Liz seems to know them all – and she will never fail to surprise you.

and an eye for detail.

Through the darkest days of winter to the busiest days of summer, Liz has been unfaltering in her professionalism, wisdom, fairness to all, willingness to listen, counsel and fix problems - properly. These problems range from the operation of the school, and a big one at that, through to hemming a wedding dress. What she doesn’t know simply isn’t worth knowing.

Liz is very proud of her school. Over the years she has organised and supported many other events, such as the 40th and 50th reunions, prizegivings and farewells, all of which ran with the utmost efficiency of being a Lizzie organised event. Her tales from the past are entertaining and beautifully told – she is a magnificent public speaker and knows just which story to tell to whom and when.

Assemblies are memorable – the 2 frogs and the use of ICT. Morals and messages and discipline. Structure, organisation and common sense. Thinking of the things other people don’t think about. Arriving at work EVERY DAY at 7am. Making the coffee, doing the rounds. Taking the newspaper to Careers. Checking on the team and delivering the contents of their pigeon holes to their desks. Reading people’s signs. Cooking breakfast for the rugby boys. Attending and supporting every school activity she possibly could. A cheeky sense of humour which struck when one least expected it. The ability to defuse tense situations and a love of social events. A calmness and sense of fairness

4

The hearts she has touched, the lives she has changed, the community she has helped to lead and her steadfast loyalty and devotion to Manurewa High School is legendary. We all truly salute and thank you and wish you the very, very best in your retirement. We look forward to seeing you at prizegivings and special occasions. Your ‘special magic’ will always fill the world of the students and staff of Manurewa High School. Thank you.

It has been a rare privilege for our school and community to have a key leader who exemplifies and expects excellence from both students and staff to achieve and experience success within education. Liz’s ability to mentor and inspire confidence and ‘grow’ people is simply phenomenal – so many of our staff and students have blossomed under her watchful aegis and now hold key leadership roles in many organisations. To organise 180 staff and 2000 students to function

safely, orderly and efficiently whilst being an educational environment is quite a feat.

Student Success Nick Voke - Golf Star When you read Nick Voke’s list of golfing achievements, it’s hard to believe the Manurewa High School student is only sixteen years old. Ranked in the New Zealand men’s top 100 golf amateurs, Nick recently won his latest tournament – the Strokeplay Championships at Huapai - by one stroke. In the past year, Nick’s trophy cabinet has become quite crowded. His current list of titles includes: Manukau Champion Auckland Intercollegiate Champion Howick U19 Champion Cobra Classic Champion Hauraki Open Runner Up Waikato U19 Runner Up

Manukau 54 Hole Open Runner Up Teams: Auckland Senior Inter Provincial Team Auckland U19’s – Captain Manukau Golf Club Number one New Zealand U19 squad. Perhaps the nicest thing about Nick’s achievements are that he deserves them! Described as having “definite x factor on the green”, he is renowned for his incredible sportsmanship and is held in high regard by others involved in the sport. School sports co-ordinator, Ms Melina Martene, summed up what many of Nick’s fellow golfers have discovered about the teenager. “In my years at Manurewa High School I have rarely come across

an individual athlete who is so well respected across his code, not only with competitors but also zone convenors and organisers. He is truly a delightful young man who represents our school and himself with pride and dignity.” In fact, Nick’s integrity is so outstanding the school has received letters from the public commenting on his “upstanding maturity” and “respect for the game of golf”.

Student Scholarships PETER HOOTEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Jaivir Singh-Batth (13RML) was one of 4 recipients nationwide of the Peter Hooton Memorial Scholarship for 2011. The funding will be used to provide cricket gear and one on one coaching for Jaivir to the value of $2,000 and our school will also receive $3,000 to be used for cricket equipment and/or cricket facilities for the school.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY – NEW YORK Rosie Johnston (13GHY) was successful in securing a scholarship to study and play Volleyball at Hofstra University in New York. The value of the scholarship is $35,000 $40,000 USD, renewed annually and covers items such as accommodation, health insurance, food, volleyball gear and academic costs.

Year 13 Destination Data Every year we follow up on what our year 13’s from the previous year are doing. We have now collected data over a 10 year period and whilst the percentages have dropped a little we still have a number of students who elect to move on to further study. Group Success Stand Up Stand Out Manurewa High School shone at this year’s Auckland Secondary Schools Performing Arts Awards - Stand Up! Stand Out! held earlier this month. Manurewa High School’s Rewa All Stars won the dance group section, and musicians Rubber Band came second in the band section. Students from schools from across the Auckland region, from Waiuku to Kaipara, competed for the chance to be named best in their category by industry professional judges Tonga Vaea and Rob Pome’e from Three Houses Down and Oriana Whaiapu from Request Dance Crew. Hosted in Manukau’s TelstraClear

Pacific Events Centre, the standard of this year’s contenders in the group dance section was exceptionally high. The top position was awarded to ‘Rewa Allstars’ from Manurewa High School; with ‘Wired’ of Papatoetoe High School being awarded second place. The final category of the night was hotly contested by seven very talented bands. Zkabby Jams of Edgeware College were judged best on the evening, followed by Rubber Band from Manurewa High School in a very close second place. Both bands were so good, they managed to get the audience up out of their seats to sing and dance. Manurewa High School music teacher Tim Randle says there was more to Manurewa High School’s success than just talent. “These students have worked

extremely hard and put in many, many hours of practice to achieve that level of mastery. They absolutely deserved their top placings at the competition.”

Rubber Band wins Smokefree Pasifica Beats final win comes hot on the heels of the band’s recent success at the Stand Up Stand Out performing arts awards, where they placed second. Smokefree Pacifica Beats is run by the Youth Performance Trust to encourage young people to create and perform

original, contemporary music that reflects the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa New Zealand. Spokesperson Elena Lome says the quality of this year’s entries was very high and the bands’ standard of musicianship continues to grow every year.

Manurewa High School musicians ‘Rubber Band’ won the Smokefree Pasifica Beats national final on Saturday night. The band won a $10,000 NZ on Air grant to record a song and music video for release. Regional finals were held around the country over recent months, with the top six bands selected to play at the final held on Saturday at Manukau’s Telstra Clear Pasifica Centre. The final was tightly contested, but ‘Rubber Band’ ultimately won the judges over with their unique style and musicianship. Teacher Tim Randle says the band is proud to be able to celebrate the music of New Zealand and the win is a dream come true for the students who have spent many long hours practicing since they first formed 18 months ago. RAW stage challenge results Manurewa High School’s hip hop group danced away with a host of awards at the 2011 ‘RAW’ Stage Challenge. Competing against other secondary school groups from the Auckland area, the troupe won top honours in a number of categories at the challenge, including: Girlfriend Magazine’s Award of Excellence for Performance Skill Concept Careers NZ’s Award of Excellence Award of Excellence for Choreography The Edge’s Award of Excellence for Drama Award of Excellence for Soundtrack Lighting Design’s Award of Excellence for Lighting The Manurewa High School group placed second overall, narrowly missing out to Kings College. The theme for the troupe’s performance

was ‘Manurewa goes to Cambodia’ – a performance reflecting Manurewa High School’s association with humanitarian aid in Cambodia. Last year a large team of humanitarian aid leadership students visited Cambodia and helped build homes. They also visited orphanages and immersed themselves in Cambodian culture. The hip hop dance routine performed at RAW explored how vital travel is to cultural understanding and the development of humanitarianism. Senior student Cassie Ganley did an incredible job of orchestrating the entire performance, i n c l u d i n g

choreography, music, narration and more. The entire performance was run solely by the students, and took about three months to pull together. Deputy Principal Daniel Wilson says the school is “incredibly proud” of the dance group. “Full credit for the performance should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the seventy students involved, particularly Cassie Ganley who worked so hard and was rewarded with a brilliant show on the night.”

Rugby - 1st XV If at first you don’t succeed… For more than a decade, the Counties Manukau 1st XV secondary schools’ rugby cup has been won primarily by Wesley College. This year Manurewa High School had another chance to wrestle the cup from Wesley - and emerged victorious. The game at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura was always going to be a tough final between the two highly ranked sides. Manurewa last won the cup in 2006, a thorn in the side of Wesley College who has otherwise consistently won the trophy for what is thought to be seventeen years (this cannot be confirmed as the trophy has

extreme passion and determination. They showed the desire to win by tackling ferociously and defending their territory throughout the whole game. We can walk away from this competition with our heads held high – we are probably the first co-ed school to ever win the cup.”

- testimony to their amazing coaches. They refused to give up.” Although eventually Mt Albert Grammar won the semi-final, Manurewa High School’s 3rd placing in the GABT is a great achievement for such an inexperienced team - only two of their players had any basketball knowledge prior to this season! Coach Lorna Pearson says she was very grateful to have the opportunity to coach “these awesome young women. To see the girls develop new skills and grow together as a team was amazing.” According to coach Lorna Pearson, stand out performers of the GABT were Sariah Savila (captain) with her enviable jump shot and speed. Kydell Pearson (vice

captain, voted most valuable player) was the team’s 3-point specialist who had an outstanding all round game. Anasetasia Mauia (voted most improved player) was the best defence player who worked hard and put her body on the line. She stopped many experienced rep players with her outstanding defense. Elisara Magele, one of the younger members of the team who started the season new to the game, also played well. Elisara developed great strength in rebounding and dominated boards at crucial times. Given their relative inexperience, the team achieved remarkable results with their third placing in the greater Auckland area. The future of basketball looks very bright for Manurewa High.

Basketball - U15 Girls Manurewa High School’s U15 girls’ basketball team has had a wonderful season in 2011, winning the Counties Manukau Zones undefeated and qualifying for the Greater Auckland Basketball Tournament (GABT). The GABT was a step up from the Counties competition, but the girls held their own on day one to progress through to the semi finals where they played Mt Albert Grammar. Manurewa High School’s sports coordinator, Melina Martene watched the game and said the team put in a gutsy performance. “Although we were down on the score board early on in the game, the girls had huge fight and heart

been misplaced). While they hadn’t kept their eye on the trophy, Wesley was determined to keep their eye on the ball during the 2011 final. They entered the game strongly, and looked set to continue their domination of the competition at half-time, with a lead of 5-0. But Manurewa High’s 1st XV refused to cave under pressure, and worked hard to get fullback Alex Mase over the try line during the second half. Halfback Mark Talaese made the crucial conversion, pushing Manurewa ahead to the full time score of 7-5. Manurewa High School 1st XV Coach Herby Kowhai is very happy with his team’s performance, saying “The team played with

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Head Prefects T.S. Eliot once wrote, “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” Today marks the end of a path but as it ends a new path begins. We have finished high school, finally shedding the familiar and embarking on a world of “what’s-next?” We’ve always known this day would come and, whether our teachers, our parents or ourselves are prepared for it, here it is. We’re about to take that leap into NCEA exams and after that, it’s time to make our own choices. Dealing with change, is all about our attitude and the choices that we make. It sometimes requires sacrifice. It definitely requires perseverance and it involves making mistakes, facing disappointments, and starting again. How you choose to respond to these changes will affect the quality of your life. Education is important but perhaps what is more important than the content of our class work are the experiences we take with us from school into the real world. In the end, what we really learned are not the facts that we memorised for the sake of exams, but every experience we have had, that has shaped us into who we are today.

He aha te mea nui o tea ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people! We are so proud and privileged to have been the head boy and head girl for 2011. This year we have had a very strong support team and we would like to acknowledge and give thanks to you all. Firstly, the staff at Manurewa High. We are constantly touched by the passion and enthusiasm you bring into your work. Thank you for your patience, guidance and love. Thank you for leading by example and inspiring us to strive for our best. Thank you for helping us build our future. We would like to thank the Prefect team who has shown full commitment, loyalty, and generosity in giving up their personal time to make things happen. To Miss Thomas and Mr Muir especially, who have guided us through this year, shared their passion with us and continue to inspire us. Thank you to the Whanau leaders and deans for giving us support as we stepped into the unknown with the new Whanau system this year. To Mr. Garguilo, thank you for your leadership and for always having an open door.

Mrs Dixon, you have supported absolutely everything in this school be it academics, sport or art and have always expressed a genuine interest in what is going on. Thank you and we wish you all the best. Thank you to our families who have shown us the way in life. To the prefects of 2012, congratulations! Remember to lead by example and never take your position for granted. Stay humble, respect your peers and the staff, and keep your feet on the ground. To Mark and Nicole, we know we are leaving our positions in capable hands. We all came a long way and struggled through our own personal battles to reach where we are today. Finishing high school is an important milestone to every one of us. In the end, know that it is not our marks or awards that matter, but more importantly it is the lessons that we have learned and the people that we have become that deserve our true celebration. Today, we walk away from high school not knowing what the future holds, but the one thing we do know is that we will continue to grow. Cassandra Ganley Simon Elliott 2011 Head Prefects

Business Applications Department Business NZ Challenge - Aimee Scott AEE (Accounting, Economics and Enterprise) is a fun and challenging subject to take on your way to an exciting career. Most Year 10 AEE students went on a course called ‘Business NZ Challenge’ run by YES (Young Enterprise Trust). It was a three day course in school premises which includes forming teams. Presenters of the programme Wayne and Deborah did some team building activities with us and then divided all the participants into groups. When you were in a group you had to come up with an idea to build your company around. Each company had tasks to do. The tasks were company registration, production, finance and to complete a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. The company was divided up and complete each task. Each task your group or company completed was worth $15,000 (fake paper money). We spent the money we earned at an auction. Wayne was auctioning the locations for final presentation stalls and every team was trying to get the best spot. It was really fun.

Our group decided to name our company “The Dairy”. We were allowed to research on internet which made our job a little easier. It was a team effort and we came up with the idea to make the “Can Cap” which helps to keep your drink fizzy for longer. Our production team had to find out how to make the product and how much it would cost. We phoned up two rubber companies and researched on the internet to do our jobs. On the third and final day we presented our idea and company to four judges. These judges were good Entrepreneurs of New Zealand. Our company “The Dairy” (members included: Jamie Ikiftu-Tagatoatama, Laura Tau, Sayne Cassidy-Turoa, Sanjay Kumar, Johnathan Talia’Uli) and our idea “The Can Cap” were good enough to be placed first out of eight companies and

their ideas. Other groups invented such things as Magic Eraser, Glowish etc. The programme was an amazing opportunity to learn interesting and new skills.

Trade Fair

IN CAELUM ASCENDE

Our class were working on Trade Fair for three weeks. At the beginning of the trade fair our group decided on doing soaps, candles and henna. Two of our group members went out and bought wine glasses for our candles. From there the candles were produced at home and were brought to school. The soaps unfortunately weren’t made, but instead we agreed on doing hair straightening and curling. Sadly we failed at this. All together the trade fair was fun and challenging. We learnt lots of skills. It was tiring at the end of the day but it all paid off as we won the ‘Best Quality Product’. I want to acknowledge the hard work of my team members (Pritika, Priyanka, Rajdeep, Brooke, Solinna) put in.

Wellington Studying Economics means gaining more general knowledge about decision making. We now know how to make the best decision out of a lot of choices, as well as all the right that a consumer should know so you will not be blinded by advertisments. Economics also teachs you how the market and the government work. Importantly, you will have chances to see all the theory that you have learnt in real life through all the trips in Economics such as level 1 Trip to NZ Steel, level 2 and 3 to the

Ports of Auckland, especially the trip to Wellington in your last year of high school. It was INCREDIBLE. Early in the morning of Thursday, April 12th, with Mrs Kaur and Miss O’Riordan, 03 Eco students went to visit the Reserved Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Parliament. We were staying in a completed economics environment and surrounded by interesting Economists working in the RBNZ and the Parliament. We learnt more about how the Monetary Policy works and also got to see a real debate in Parliament house

and how the issues were discussed in parliament. And it was the first time ever we got to see John Key in real life as well as other important ministers. Fortunately, we got a chance to talk to a MP, he explained to us how the government works in details, and we also created our own government but just for a fun game. After all the trips, they motivate us to study more so we can get in University and will have future jobs like people that we had seen in RBNZ and New Zealand Parliament. Hannah Vu

Plantation Business Challenge is in its seventh year of partnership with AUT University, MIT & the Pacific Business Trust. This entrepreneurial programme has fostered the development of budding Pasifika entrepreneurs and made connections between Year 13 students tertiary providers and the industry. This was an eight week programme and it was an exciting experience for all the students who attended from Manurewa High School. Sanjleen, Simoa, Pritika, Puilise, Bernadine formed a fake company (PAC-LAND Ltd- in short of Pacific Islanders) were in the Top 3 schools in Auckland who made the challenge more interesting for the Judges and audiences by surprising them with their intelligent business techniques. It was not solely about theory work since there were games involved to make the environment more lively and comfortable for the students to interact and know each other. This

Art History On the 8th of September the MHS level 3 Art History class ventured into the vast city of Auckland in search for masterpiece artworks to analyse and adore. We found ourselves at the colossal Auckland Art Gallery, home to tens of thousands of fantastic works and artists. Here we witnessed famous works by artists like, Gretchen Albrecht, Wassily Kandinsky, Micheal Parekowhai, Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, and many more. We were exposed to artworks we’d only seen on paper and discovered a new way to experience art. Looking at the artworks we were taken on an emotional journey through the minds of some of the worlds most influential artists and left with a new understanding on what art is. As 3 o’clock approached we finished our tour and topped our day with a nice scoop of Giapo gelato ice-cream and returned home, eager to discuss and relay our new vision on art.

2011 has been a very busy year within the Art department. So much has been going on and as I write this, there is still more on the agenda with the level three folios due and many prize givings. This year we have all been implementing our new level one programmes and organising ourselves for the new level two curriculum for 2012. We have been nurturing and producing some fairly talented young artists, who have done the department proud with some wonderful folios for this year. The Art department ladies have also been busy producing (or re-producing) and this year Mrs Lord welcomed her new baby girl Chelsea and Mrs Mail had her little girl Summer. They are beautiful happy babies and will grow to be wonderfully creative like their mummies! Whilst Mrs Lord was on leave we had the assistance of Mrs Arthur who worked well within the department. Also with Mrs Mail’s absence we had the pleasure to welcome back Mrs Fullard (although most still know her as Ms Jolley) who has taken on the photography students with much ‘gusto’. It has been quite entertaining having her back and she has already made her ‘mark’ with a huge overhaul and tidy up of the infamous mess known as Mrs Mail’s office! As always the annual Art Exhibition was the highlight of our year, where we can showcase our student’s artistic talents to staff and the public. This year was another great success where all of our fields (design, photography, painting, printmaking, carving and junior art) were equally represented. Miss Hansen was a huge success at the exhibition and managed to sell a record number or works! Sadly we are losing an integral member of our department this year as the wonderfully talented and knowledgeable Ms Carnachan moves on to newer pastures over the shore. She has been a huge resource to us all with her contemporary knowledge of art and artists and I’m sure we will all sorely miss that endless supply of worksheets/ exemplars/plans/units and whatever else she would create in her spare time. The new year looks to be interesting with some new courses being implemented our new level two

Archives After all the bustle and excitement of the 50th Jubilee in 2010, 2011 has been a quiet and somewhat anticlimactic year. After years of appealing for parts of old school uniforms a cap, blazer and tie from 1965 finally arrived, kindly donated by Robert Montgomery. It is intended sometime next year to mount a display of these and other items in the school archives. The accompanying photo has me wearing the blazer and cap. In the meantime, if you wish to see them and any other items from the collection please email me vy@manurewa. school.nz and I will gladly show them to you. Also, if you want information about past school events, students, staff etc. don’t hesitate to contact me. More old

uniforms would be appreciated. So far, apart from the cap, blazer and tie all I have are some sports and music trip jacketsparts of every-day uniform such as boys’ shorts’ socks, jerseys and shirts and girls’ skirts and blouses would be welcome. This year I have continued assembling news items about the school, doing patches of research about past students and teachers, cataloguing and storing photos, digitising videos and creating a database of past students and staff. The school is now 51 years old. The foundation students will be eligible for the old-age pension in a year or so! Why not check out the summary of the school’s history in the frames on the wall of the Science Block?

I spend a few hours each week in the small office at the top of the stairs in the library, mainly on the mornings of Monday and Tuesday, but if you wish to contact me it is best to do so by email first. David Voisey School Archivist

We the Christian Fellowship would like to start off by thanking the Lord who has blessed us immensely this year with the opportunity to continue to grow in not only knowledge of his undying love for us as individuals but also in our growing love for Him. This year has been very busy and with the Lord’s help we were able to grow as the Manurewa High School youth from an empty classroom in Miss Toga’s room, to students filling the classroom beyond capacity, much to our pleasure. Coming together as a youth Christian group every Monday for prayers and Tuesdays for inspirational messages from guest speakers to students of our school. The message that has stuck with me throughout this year is FAITH. To believe in something is to have faith and I believe that is what I have learnt most of all this year in Christian Fellowship, because of our faith as Manurewa High School Christian Youth we have become not only closer to God but have to come to know him even more just like in Matthew 17:20 I tell you the truth, if you have faith as

small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. The faith that we have gained due to our experiences this year will live on in us forever. Even if our faith is as small as a mustard seed nothing is impossible with God by our sides. On a last note I would just like to say a very big and massive thank you to the Manurewa High School Christian Fellowship for inspiring many and continuing to be the shining light in motivating my Faith in Jesus Christ my Saviour, May God bless you all if I had more words to say I would thank you very much to all my brothers and sisters. I know you will achieve much next year

Careers Department 10-13, have been mentored by health professionals and have visited several local health facilities. As a group, they have also raised funds to support ‘Snug Homes in Manukau’ – a CMDHB initiative to support better health in our community. Our students have valued being part of this programme which is designed for them to progress from one year level to the next once they have been selected. JUST THE JOB Simon Elliot (13GBL) our current Head prefect, was successful in his audition for Just the Job series 6. Simon was cast as an apprentice in the Flooring and Decorating Industries and spent a day being filmed while laying a resin floor. It would seem he did a pretty good job as his boss said he would definitely employee Simon in the future. MANUKAU INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT) All of our Year 10 students have again had the opportunity to visit MIT. Staff representatives from most MIT faculties attended so that they could explain their courses to our Y12 and Y13 students. OTAGO TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION CHALLENGE The Challenge, held in Auckland in June this year, aims to introduce secondary school representative teams of Year 12 and 13 students to emerging technologies being researched in the Information Science department, University of Otago. Students were challenged to identify a problem that could be solved, or business concept that could be developed, around the use of these technologies. Manurewa High School entered two teams with resounding success. Team, ‘Ctrl+Alt+M’, made up of Amy van de Weg (13YLE), Claire Taia (13YLE)

TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIPS We have had a number of Y13 students apply for and succeed in winning tertiary study scholarships. These can be viewed on the prize-winners page towards the rear of this magazine. It is unfortunate that we have not been advised of all scholarship winners at the time of printing this magazine. We wish them well in their future endeavours and look forward to hearing their success stories in the years to come. S Leslie

The Careers Department year seems to have flown by so quickly with changes in the school terms made by the Ministry of Education in support of the Rugby World Cup 2011. Student numbers visiting the Careers Department during interval and lunchtime have increased and of particular note is the number of Y9 and Y10 students who have decided to pop in this year. Generally speaking we have a large number of senior students visit so it’s fantastic to see our junior students feeling comfortable enough to come and hang out. Again this year we have organised and supported a variety of co-curricular events which have kept me and my two wonderful assistants, Miss Paotama and Miss Rowsell busy. Some are mentioned below. CAREERS EXPO Our biennial Careers EXPO was held in July this year. We had over 40 representatives from Universities, Polytechnics, Trades and Armed services attend to offer information and advice on career planning and opportunities available within their industries. Despite a cold evening, over 300 students, family and friends attended. AUT – PLANTATION BUSINESS CHALLENGE The Plantation Business Challenge is an entrepreneurial programme which requires teams of students currently studying Business, to formulate a business idea and submit a basic business proposal to the organisers. Biology In March this year, 2 classes of level 2 Biology students accompanied by Mrs Flynn, Mrs Stevens and Mrs Palmer went to Waharau to study Ecology and gain some credits. The days were spent in the forest, on the beach and by the stream collecting data and enjoying nature (i.e. tree hugging). The students worked extremely hard on their assessments, staying up late and getting up early to work with the teachers to make sure they had the data they needed to write brilliant essays. In June a small group of Year 12 students went to Motutapu Island with Dr Marsh and Mrs Flynn, to volunteer their time to plant trees on the Island. The day was very challenging with lots of physical work and a hard walk up a large hill, but the students were rewarded with stunning views of Auckland and the harbour. They were then treated to a tour of the Island and a talk from a D.O.C. Ecologist.

Drama Department immensely from these experiences both personally and as a performer. Jordan Keyzer who successfully auditioned for the role of Stage Manager for the Young and Hungry Theatre Festival. He stage managed “Disorder” by Thomas Sainsbury a zombie play that demanded he provide copious amounts of blood and body parts around the stage and have his set destroyed every performance by the out of control evil zombies. Jordan was totally professional and dedicated, gaining NCEA Drama credits for this experience. We are very proud of his efforts. FINAL ACT: MR MCRAE’S SCRIPT After quietly tapping away at Shortland Street scripts at home in cabin fever inducing isolation, teaching drama at Manurewa was just the shot in the arm (head/foot/insert preferred section of anatomy here) I needed. I can summarise the year in three simple words… It’s been mean! Highlights? Seeing my year 11 “diamonds in the rough” turn into loveable, talented human beings with performance chops. Taking Kodee, Hannah K and Jairus to audition for Shortland Street…and hearing that Kodee gained a guest role. Seeing my Year 10s turn an online comic into a stage play, using their own words and characters, making it totally theirs. Karaoke Fridays with 13 Drama! And just simply getting a friendly ‘hello mister’ fifty times a day, often from kids I don’t even teach. That’s what I’ll

29

remember most about Manurewa. Not the coffee on tap (although that was pretty cool). Not having a meltdown in the pavilion (apparently I’m not the first). Not the tagging on my staging (nice penmanship, GStar). “Hello, mister. How’s your day?” CURTAIN CALL: MISS TAYLOR’S SCRIPT Well what a whirlwind this year in drama has been! There are some very talented students coming through in junior drama and I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best for their future studies in drama. For the first time at year 10 the students got to participate in a class play. What a rewarding experience it was for all of us, and a lot of fun! It has been a pleasure to teach senior students that I have taught since they were in year 9. Seeing how much they have grown and developed not just in drama but in all aspects of their learning and self journey. I would like to thank Andrea Thomas H.O.D for all her assistance both professionally and personally. The Drama department is unique and rich in knowledge and integrity. It has been rewarding to work in such an environment and I shall carry the experience with me always. STANDING OVATION: Thanks as always to Jannese Telford for dealing with all the Dramas and for everything you do for us personally, for the students and for the department.

THE DRAMA SCENE: MISS THOMAS’ SCRIPT We welcomed Mr Edwin McRae who came to us from his job as a script writer on Shortland St for 4 years. Prior to this he taught Drama in Nelson. Edwin’s creative ideas for and technological expertise have been fantastic for the students who have really engaged in his lessons. We wish him and his family all the best for life back down in Nelson. Sadly we farewell Miss Taylor at the end of this year after 4 years in the Department. Thank you for nurturing and encouraging our talented students and for all the time and effort you have put in to ensuring our students be the best they can be. Thank you also to Eddie for being our most valuable audience member at every class performance. It has been incredible to have 6 senior drama classes this year but it has definitely put pressure on rehearsal schedules and room use! We have had a huge variety of performances this year but the highlights would have to be “Bang Bang” by 03 Drama with Mr McRae and “Midsummer Night’s Carnival” by 03 Drama with Miss Thomas. I would like to congratulate a few senior students who have had success this year with their drama endeavours. Gateway Gateway is a government funded initiative through the Tertiary Education Commission. Gateway enables senior students to learn and gain NZQA credits while in the workplace. Gateway is designed to make learning relevant and to broaden student’s options, and enables schools to help their students by strengthening the range of career pathways. It has been another great year for all 72 senior students who took part in the Manurewa High School Gateway Programme 2011. We have had another exciting year with two new Gateway programmes that were launched this year. It was the year that had Manurewa High School students take to the skies. Congratulations to Richard Hooper who successfully took part and completed his Gateway Pilots Programme with

Ardmore Airport in term one, it was great to see one of our students from MH given the opportunity to fly light aircraft. Six year 13 Tourism students also took to the skies as part of a new Gateway Programme trialled for the first time with Air NZ and Ardmore Airport. This new programme enabled our students to train as flight attendant’s experiencing all aspects of the role including a flight on a DC3, enhancing and solidifying their learning and desire to move into this industry. I was really impressed with the way our students rose to the challenge in both these new programmes, ensuring continued industry involvement with MH paving the way for future students of this school to also learn and gain valuable experience as those before them. Special congratulations to all 18 year 13 students who completed their “Customer

Service Award” a national qualification recognised within the retail industry. And congratulations to all students that took part in their respective Gateway programme’s 2011, you represented yourselves and MH to the highest standard at all times and often in in very demanding work environments. I wish you all the very best for the future. And of course a special thank you to all the companies and businesses that have once again shown us there ongoing support by continuing to work alongside our school and students in the Gateway Programme. Your contribution to our school and students is invaluable. G Reid Gateway Coordinator

We learnt to take-off and land as well as basic flight principles like how to keep flying at a constant altitude and safety practices like

AIR NZ FLIGHT ATTENDANT PROGRAMME Approximately 12 year 13 students signed up for the opportunity to do flight attendant work experience, unfortunately only six were chosen, and I was lucky enough to be one of those six students. It was a seven week work experience where we would be at Ardmore Airport then at Air New Zealand training centre. The work experience took place each Tuesday and Friday. It was a great experience for me and also for the other five students that were chosen. During the third week at Ardmore Airport we got to experience flying in a DC3 air craft. The flight in the DC3 has been one of the best flights I have taken because I got to observe the captain and the first officer in the flight deck while in the air. Undertaking this work experience has enhanced my knowledge about the cabin crews and

what their main job is, and also learning the major components of an aircraft. Gaining the experience of being a flight attendant has made me see how important the job of being a flight attendant is and the roles they play in the industry. It has been a real pleasure being part of this work experience and not once do I regret any of it. Thank you to Mr Reid for all the effort you have put into it to help me gain more experience and knowledge of being a cabin crew member, I enjoyed every second that I spent there.

POLICE PROGRAMME During 2011 we applied to join the Gateway Police Programme. The programme gave us an insight of what to expect when joining the Police force. After being put through our paces with several initial tests, only 6 year 13 students were fortunate enough to take part in the programme that spanned most of terms one and two. The programme involved us completing the Police PCT (Physical Competency Test), PAT (Physical Appraisal Test), Swimming Test, and also to sit Law papers through an outside training provider which we gained NZQA credits. We also had the privilege to go and see the K-9 dogs, Police Helicopters, and the Police Boats. The experience has been very helpful for us all to understand what we would like to do in the future, and gave us a huge advantage in our preparation for joining the NZ Police force, as we were exposed to and completed all the entry tests that are needed to join the Police. This course has also helped us figure out what we would like to specialise in after Police College. Olivia Hill

MIDDLEMORE HOSPITAL

IN CAELUM ASCENDE

This year, through the Gateway programme & Middlemore Hospital, I had the opportunity to experience hospital life once a week over a month. I found that many of my perceptions changed in regards to health services. Over this month I saw how doctors operated advanced medical machinery such as the MRI and CAT scan. I learnt a lot about the medical imagery side and how important radiologists are when it comes to saving lives. This profession just isn’t about pressing a button and “zapping” people. It requires patience, time, understanding and above all compassion. Furthermore radiologists have to be precise and accurate, they cannot afford to waste time when it comes to dealing with peoples’ lives. Over this time I was able to realise the impact that radiologists have in peoples’ lives and in the hospital. I recommend this

programme to anyone who is interested in the medical industry – as you will find it’s not as black and white as the TV makes it appear. I was able to witness only a small proportion of some of the incredible work that the hospital does. Special thanks to Mr Reid – who provided me with this unique opportunity. I certainly enjoyed my experience and feel that I have gained a lot from it. Matthew Kent.

Educational Support Centre It has been a very exciting and successful year in the ESC department. Students have been out and about around the historic sights of Auckland in their ‘Discover Auckland’ topic work. They have tried their hand at indoor climbing. And have had a very successful year in the Special Olympics competitions, claiming several prizes in the Ten Pin Bowling, and having their first go at competitive Basketball. Students have also taken on the challenge of fundraising for their residential trip to Rotorua. They did this

by selling cookies, made in the department, at lunch and morning tea, raffles (one of these being an All Blacks signed rugby ball), tombolas, and anything else we could think of. We were very successful in the end and raised over $1200, allowing ten of our students to experience the trip this year. Part way through the year Ms Devoy went over to the UK to get married, so the Juniors were lucky enough to have non other than Mrs Gargulio teach them for term 3. During this time students went on a trip to Franklin Zoo.

The seniors have had a great year in work experience. Many have also achieved a number of unit standards from the Star Courses programme building communication and personal skills, preparing them for when they leave school. This year the Yr. 13s to leave us are Stan Ah Soon, Michelle Nairn and Prithika Krishna who also celebrated her 21st birthday this year. They will be very much missed, and we wish them all the luck in the world in their new lives.

ESOL Department 2011 has been another successful year for the ESOL department. It is always very rewarding to see students, who come to New Zealand knowing very little English, develop their confidence in the ability to communicate using the English language. This year has seen the continued development of NCEA assessments in the senior school. Students are able to have the opportunity to earn credits towards passing NCEA at all levels of English language acquisition – from Level 1 to Level 3. We also continued to offer Level 2 University entrance literacy units. This ensures that our courses meet the students’ needs and that all of our students have a chance to achieve at their very best! About a hundred students studied ESOL this year from reception level through to the advanced ESOL courses. Students came from different countries and language backgrounds as migrants or foreign fee-paying students. This year, a large proportion of our students came from Pacifika countries. Even though our students arrive knowing not much English, as well as not a lot about New Zealand culture and lifestyle, our students are respectful because they are ready to adjust to the changes. English is the second, third or maybe even fourth language these students know, which is a huge accomplishment. They are determined, motivated, and diligent. They also enthusiastic about the topics studied in ESOL. This year one of our topics studied was Culture and Identity

and our students were very excited to learn about the different cultures of the individual class members. The Samoan students were very keen to educate other students about the process of making an umu and took great delight in helping Ms Sooaemalelagi’s class prepare an umu. Another topic studied was conservation and students were very dedicated helpers when Ms Park brought in the baby Blue Petrel which she had rescued. Congratulations to our students who have made pleasing progress. Well done those who are fully mainstreamed or spending less and less time in our department. It is very rewarding to see our students perform well not only in their ESOL classes, but

also in their mainstream classes. I was very proud to see Atraa Allami, Hanh Dinh, Laura Kwon, Siyan Zeng, Johnny Sega and Peni Emelio win prizes in their mainstream classes. I would like to thank my co-sider ESOL Ms Vickie Park for her enthusiasm and the generosity to give up holiday time providing students with extra support. Thanks also to our long-term reliever Mr David Reid who put a lot of effort into his teaching. Finally I would like to thank our wonderful support staff Mrs Carla O’Neill, Mrs Chrissie Lee and Mrs Ann Shaw. Ms Xia LI HOD ESOL

We continue to have around 10-12 International Students. Those students who have left us during the year have been quickly replaced by new ones. It has been, and will always be our intention, to concentrate on the few students we have rather than spread ourselves thinly to cover a larger number. Most of our students are from Asia and come to Manurewa High School for their senior education. We do not recruit students but rely on word of mouth, and have had no trouble keeping our numbers at the present level. We have had a change in Director since the 2010 yearbook was printed. We thank Phil Muir for the job he has done and the guidance he has given

end of Term Three. It culminated with a wonderful piece of writing by Ailish Ford being chosen for an editor’s choice award. Manurewa High School had achieved a national creative voice and our students had expressed themselves beautifully. Beyond our constant efforts to raise literacy and promote literature as a way of life outside of the classroom, we sometimes forget the most basic function of any language. It is a means by which to share your soul. It is the vehicle of expression and the voice of mind. The creativity of our students in and around the classroom must always be valued as a part of their identity. The reward of being published for the several students who received it was not really the pleasurable trip to an electronic goods store, it was their sense of accomplishment, the fact that they rose above all previous expectations of themselves and proved that whatever they have rattling around in their brains is worth something. Finding this conduit in our everyday

classes is a constant challenge, and the College Herald is an opportunity for a small minority of brave students. The proof however, that allowing creative expression works, is in the strong stance of a Year Nine, curly headed boy who will now perhaps never stop writing, just because he experienced success and his selfworth was vindicated. Perhaps that is all it takes? After all, the texts we teach and the poetry we promote here in the English department all stems from the effort to uphold the truth of who we are. Empowering our students with the intricacies of the English language can be a daunting task; writing well is hard work; reading well is also hard work but it pays off for the rest of our lives and furthermore, as the small but confident group of published Manurewa High School writers know only too well, it allows you to feel quite good about yourself. It was a rare treat as a teacher to saunter merrily into a Year Nine class, on a brisk morning in term two, with a student award in hand. James Langi of 9RSC sat unaware amongst his peers as I began a long diatribe about the usefulness of the English language and how important it is to express our creativity any chance we get. In my hand was a $100 voucher for JB Hi-Fi. James had submitted a creative piece about cyber bullying and that had been published in the College Herald the week before. When I called out his name and informed everyone what he had accomplished, James cautiously took the prize and nervously shook my hand. He didn’t grasp the fact that the whole country had read his work and that the power of words was real, visceral and inspirational to hundreds of thousands of appreciative readers. James began to walk a little taller, he seemed a little bit more mature and for once in James Langi’s young life, he might just have experienced what it feels like to be truly good at something. It changed him for the better. News of this small victory for James spread quickly throughout the English classes, and soon, entries were pouring in and the morning meeting announcement of which student had been published that week was a common occurrence by the

With Rotorua being well known for their geothermal hot springs, students visited the Polynesian Spa to take time and relax in the hot geothermal pools. Just before departure, the Geography students visited Skyline Skyrides where the students became engrossed with races down the

Year 13 Geography for 2011 started off the year with the study of the Muriwai Coastal Environment and the coastal processes that take place at this windswept rugged west coast beach. To gain a better understanding of this environment the year 13 Geography classes ventured out of the class room to experience the Coastal environment of Muriwai for themselves. The Geography students had a first-hand experience of what they had been studying in the class room, from the erosion taking place at Muriwai to the ways erosion has been prevented with the use of the Gabion baskets. From the case study of Muriwai to the Study of Tourism Development, the Year 13 Geography classes delved straight into the Tourism taking place in Rotorua and Australia. The year 13 students were given the opportunity to travel to the Gold Coast, and get involved in a three day field trip to Rotorua, where the students were able to experience the wide range of tourist attractions that Rotorua the Tourist capital of New Zealand has to offer. The students took residents at Keswick Christian Camp, and toured the area of Rotorua. While visiting the Tourist Capital the Geography students had the chance to visit the Historical Bath House building getting to venture into Rotorua’s past. Here they took part in a Cinematic experience that looked back into Rotorua’s history, and then getting to explore the bath house where they were able to view the baths once used by tourists from all over the world in search for the therapeutic qualities of the Geothermal water that is still a main attraction in Rotorua today. Students also had the chance to experience Maori Culture at Te Puia cultural village where the geography students could walk around on a guided tour and see the bubbling mud pools and the geysers where geothermal activity was constantly taking place. After taking part in the guided tour, students were able to take part in an interactive Maori Cultural performance with many of the students getting up to take part in the Haka. This was a great cultural experience as students got to see and take part in a live cultural performance. Along with visiting these unique cultural attractions, students were able to visit the Agrodome to watch a live sheep show, another entertaining tourist attraction in Rotorua, giving

Yr 12 Geography At the end of Term One 84 students from Year 12 headed down to Tongariro National Park stopping at Huka Falls and Taupo on the way. We carried out research on the streams in Tongariro National Park, and tried not to get wet as we climbed around and behind an awesome waterfall. Unfortunately when we went to the top of Ruapehu the fog had come in and we couldn’t see anything. It was really cold, we knew there were ski lifts…. We just couldn’t see them! Later in the year we went to Auckland Urban area as part of our research where we went up skytower and got an amazing view of Auckland city, where we could see almost all the way to school! We then had to go down Queen street and carry out a survey about the buildings, some of us chose to do a pedestrian survey instead. Some of us even got some shopping in when we finished, while the teachers were at star bucks. We then got a tiki tour around the different areas of Auckland looking at how they are different.

Yr 11 Geography This year on a beautiful day in March we set sail across the Auckland harbour to Rangitoto Island. Most of us had never been there before where we had stunning views of Auckland and all the many volcanoes, never mind the fun of being on the boat, some of us even got to steer the ferry for a while. Some of us also got to go on an overnight trip to Rotorua to see the effects of the Mt Tarawera eruption and to climb Mt Tarawera, where the weather on the way down was not so nice. We got to go around the buried village where we saw an awesome waterfall, and a talk from and visited the museum and then had an amazing trip to the summit of Mt Tarawera where we went up in a 4WD bus that took us to the top and we saw just how huge Mt Tarawera really was. We then walked around an amazing geothermal valley with boiling pools and an amazing blue steaming lake. Awesome trips, had so much fun.

Languages Samoan TATAU TRIP On Wednesday August 3rd the very first Year 11 Samoan Language class were given the opportunity to attend a tattooing symposium held at The University of Auckland. The tattooist was the famous Suluape who was tattooing 2 sogaimiti on 2 young men. The students were able to see firsthand the full tattooing of the traditional tatau. It was an experience that they were able to enjoy and be proud of. Students were able to ask questions about the tatau to the tufuga and the young male who was being tattooed. They were very engaged in the interaction, getting relevant information and being very vigilant with the activities on the day. The students of the Year 11 Samoan class were able to see the actual tattooing, the use of the different tattooing instruments, the procedures that are usually put in place with traditional Samoan tattooing and were able to ask questions directly to the tufuga (tattooist) who they found very amusing. This was an amazing experience and I hope that we will be able to gain another opportunity to see more of the Samoan culture and aganu’u.

POLYFEST SAMOAN STAGE SPEECH COMPETITION

French Junior pupils had a go at making their own chocolate crêpes in class and took part in a French boules tournament. Year 10 pupils went on a trip to Auckland Zoo, along with pupils from Japanese and Samoan classes. They had to complete a tri-lingual fact finding mission, with prizes awarded for teams that answered the most questions correctly. Year 10 pupils also put together a fashion show, creating their own garments from recycled items, taking to the catwalk and providing a commentary in French. The senior French pupils took a trip to Le Garde Manger, a French restaurant in the City. They had the opportunity to practice their French restaurant phrases, whilst sampling delicious, traditional French food. International Cultures Week was great fun. With pupils making and selling crêpes, and sampling escargots (snails), kindly prepared by Mr. Coulomb.

The year 2011 saw a great start to our Samoan speech competition for the Auckland Secondary PolyFest competition. This year we entered 4 students – Year 9: Anasetasia Mauia, Faaaloalo Mulipola; Year 10: Mile Fonoia and Year 11: Aukuso Taumafai. All 4 students did exceptionally well and although they did not all gain any places they are commended for their courage to speak in front of our Samoan community. We were extremely overjoyed to receive the 3rd place for the Year 9 Samoan speech by Faaaloalo Mulipola, who spoke with great confidence. This will be the first time Manurewa High School has gained a place in the Samoan speech competition. I hope this will continue on through the years to come.

had a sister school relationship. The group extends their heartfelt thanks to Mr Wilson and Ms McPherson for leading the exchange trip to Japan and looking after them so well. The 20th Anniversary Celebrations with Takasaki Higashi High School in both countries were very special and we look forward to continuing the relationship forever. We had a great time during International Week, dressing up in Japanese costumes, playing festival games and running a food stall. The Kyoto style parfait was again a huge success. Thank you to all our supporters and helpers in the Japan group – you are incredible.

school during the day. Takasaki-Higashi put on a 2 hour full school assembly to celebrate the 20 years of the exchange. The assembly included speeches in both Japanese and English from both teachers and language students, gifts were exchanged, a performance from the choir, concert band and demonstrations from the Kendo club and the one of the best rhythmic gymnasts in Japan. After school I was surprised with how many students stay after school and do extracurricular activities. There were clubs such as: softball club, manga club (cartoon), kendo club and tea ceremony club. Our group got a chance to experience a traditional tea ceremony with the tea ceremony club, it was very interesting as I didn’t realise how every step was pre-determined and how much work it takes to make a cup of tea! It is truly an art form. While we were at the school we participated in all of the classes and were treated with the utmost respect by staff and students of the school. It was surprising how good their English was. Getting involved and

experiencing what life was like for your everyday Japanese person was an experience tourists can never get. I was surprised because I thought the families would be very strict and only eat rice and fish. To my surprise, they ate cake and what we would call lunch foods for breakfast! My first dinner with the family was Italian. The families were very kind and laid back, you could joke around with them easily even though there was a bit of a language barrier. We also spent a day trip to Edo Ninja Village with all the students and staff as well as a day with our host families. There was a ninja show, and many of us bought a wooden sword and got it engraved with Japanese kanji. Mine said Yuuki, which means courage. The 10 days away were amazing and all of us benefited from using our Japanese in context. It was an experience of a life time and I will never forget the friendships and fun times I had throughout the trip. Abigail Hyland

We did things like visit Harajuku which is notorious for fashion. We also went to Asakusa Temple to get a taste of the Japanese culture before heading to Takasaki. We also went to Tokyo Disneyland which was the most anticipated activity on the trip however this was somewhat disappointing as queues were often up to 2 hours long in 35C heat. Maths Department imparting his own rugby skills to some of our students at the Sevens Tournament. Mr Hufanga has been a regular member of the champion Ponsonby Rugby side for the last few years and once again his try-scoring skills eventually helped them to another Auckland title. At the start of Term 2 Mr Arthur Adlam moved from the Mathematics Department to take up the position of Head of the Maori Department. He was replaced for a term by Mr Craig Render, previously with the PE Department, while he in turn was replaced by Ms Christine Shaver who came to us from King’s College and brought some well-needed IT skills to the department. There have been some fine achievements in Mathematics over the last year. We were delighted in March to hear of the successes of Viet Pham and Michael Wong in gaining subject scholarships in Statistics and Modelling, the best results for any department in the school. The numeracy rate at Level 1 had risen from 78% to 87% for the 2010 year and we are confident of even better results for this year. Unfortunately the internal school Mathex competition was not able to take place this year because of the changes to the term times, but we were well represented by four teams at the Counties-Manukau Competition held at Onewhero Area School. They then competed with honour against the best that Auckland could offer at Kohimarama’s ASB Stadium. The Year 10 A Team did particularly well to finish in the top half of the competition.

In the annual Australian Mathematics Competition we had five students achieve a Distinction which placed them in the top 10% of the very select group of competitors. Congratulations to Jessie Chen, Jimmy Wu, Darren Hor, Morgan Davis and Thai Nguyen for their fine performances. A further thirteen students achieved Credit certificates. The New Year will bring many challenges. The refurbishment of the Main Block will see a brand new Mathematics Department with improved facilities though we will be lucky to have access to these from the start of the school year. The introduction of the new re-aligned standards at level 2 will also present challenges, as well the new Numeracy Unit Standards which will be done for the first time in the 01MTC course. Mr A.R. Carey

It has been a year of consolidation in the Mathematics Department. The introduction of the new standards at Level 1 has been a prime focus. The new standards are the start in a three year transition period as they are realigned to the new curriculum. This re-alignment has been viewed as being rather unfriendly to the less able students, and this will particularly impact on us at Manurewa High School. Thankfully, for the first year it was possible to retain the old unit standards and this has resulted in some very fine internal assessment results for the Level 1 cohort of students. There has been reasonable stability in the staffing of the department in 2011. At the end of February we said goodbye to Mr Murray Hollis, a member of the department since 1978. Mr Hollis has been an inspiration to generations of Manurewa High School students. His laid-back approach made him a popular teacher and his knowledge of, and prowess in, his subject have made him a most valued and admired colleague. While we wished him well in his retirement, we actually saw him most days during the year as a regular day reliever. In Term 4 he stepped in to fill a temporary vacancy in the Integrated Learning Department. Mr Stephen Naidu departed at the same time, though for him it was a year of refreshment to travel back to his native South Africa. He would, however, end up spending most of his time in Perth, Western Australia. We look forward to enjoying his company upon his return. At the start of the year we welcomed one new staff member. Mr Tevita Hufanga joined us fresh from the University of Auckland. With a major in Mathematics and Statistics he added some youth to a grateful department and it was satisfying to see him become so involved with the life of the school. He contributed to our successful Tongan Group as well as assisting with Year 12 Camps and

Music Department 2011 has been a totally memorable year for an amazingly wide range of outstanding cocurricular musical achievements. From week 1 we continued working towards our coming concert band tour to Sydney and Canberra. Raising the necessary money was not easy but with the help of many supportive families and with Mrs Girdwood and Mr Wilson driving a range of fundraising activities our goal was achieved. 31 students and 4 staff departed for Sydney on July 28th. The band enjoyed workshops at prestigious Barker College and with The Australian Navy Band. They played together with the community band at Baulkham Hills and performed to students at Lyneham High and St Edmunds College in Canberra. Most evenings were spent rehearsing and preparing our concert repertoire but day-time activities were many and varied - a guided tour of the Sydney Opera house, a day on Sydney harbour and in beautiful Manley, a visit to Bondi beach, the Blue Mountains, Jenolan caves, the Canberra Zoo the Australian Parliament buildings and very impressive war memorial. A delayed flight home taught us all the reality of international travel, but this caused scarcely a dent in the overall success of a really happy tour. It was a special treat to have Mr and Mrs Gargiulo join us for our days in Canberra. They were fun to travel with and enjoyed the chance to get to know some more of our students. The ‘farewell concert’ held at the end of term 2 was a chance to showcase the amazingly wide range of musical activity in our school and this it did. Our three chamber music groups performed – a pitched percussion group, a trio of snare drums and a quartet of saxophones. The ‘Big Sing’ choir displayed some of their recently acquired skills and our contemporary musicians were well represented on piano, vocal and guitars – both electric and acoustic. Junior and Senior Concert bands and the Jazz band were main features.

It was heartening to have a choir from our school take a full part in ‘The Big Sing’ again this year. Thanks to a great deal of hard work by our vocal teacher Mrs Kitchen, and commitment from 30 dedicated students, they sang with pride 3 vastly contrasting songs – by Monteverdi, Michael Vinten and Elton John - and joined not only in the competitive section but the Gala Concert as well. Although our singers were not selected for an award they made enormous progress as choristers and really enjoyed the learning experience.

While the concert band was away in Australia, music staff back ‘at home’ were working hard rehearsing and recording 9 entries in the NZ‘ Play it Strange’ competition for original singer/ songwriters. A weekend composition workshop early in the year had enabled Hinewehi Mohi and Tama Waipara to inspire a number of our students into composing new and original material. How delighted we were to have 4 selected for the ‘top 50’ CD of 2011 which placed our school 1st equal in NZ. Analita Tolai-Fuamatu with Daniel Snowball, Junior Taala, Renee Apulu and Rachael Fenton were the successful composer/performers which entitled them to a day each in the superb ‘York Street’ studios recording their songs professionally – a wonderful learning opportunity for them and their teachers Mr Randle and Mr Coulomb. We are now looking forward to the release of the CD. In addition Junior Taala accepted readily the opportunity to compose music for Telstra Clear Pacific Centres’ funding application and as a result our school received a grant towards our own recording equipment. Also rehearsing at the same time were our two entries in the Auckland heats of ‘Pacifica Beats’ – ‘Rubberband’ and ‘Polyphonix.’ The Saturday of the heats was a great celebration of high school talent across Auckland and we were delighted that ‘Rubberband’ was selected as one of the finalists and their song ‘Love, love love’ voted the best song.

Other notable events in 2011 included a trip for seniors to the Baroque Opera ‘Xerxes’ and for juniors to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Two students were taken to visit the new pipe organ in the Auckland Town Hall and Emma Burrows enjoyed an Auckland wide flute workshop. Mitchell Clark accepted 2 opportunities to begin learning to conduct. The second involved working with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra for a week – a fantastic opportunity for him. Musicians have led the school singing once again during International Week (‘True colours’ was our song this year) and in all prize giving ceremonies. In addition several of our music students performed in ‘Whakamihia a Tatou Akonga Maori’ – an evening celebrating Maori achievement. Our music classrooms this year have seen a great deal of dedicated teaching from every music teacher including each one of our itinerant teachers. NCEA credits in solo and group performance have been gained by a very high proportion of our senior

students. Miss Cuizon has developed great enthusiasm for music amongst year 9 and 10 students with record numbers enrolling for level 1 music next year. Literacy strategies are being used in all music classrooms to enhance the ability of our students to gain the qualifications they need to set them on positive future paths. Without a doubt our music department’s most valuable resource is its staff. Mr Randle, Mr Coulomb and Miss Cuizon have each brought their own expertise and passion to their work and it is through the team work and combined efforts of all that we have been able to achieve so much and across such a wide spectrum of musical genres. Mrs Girdwood our music coordinator has been especially valuable this year with fund raising ideas and enthusiasm. She has helped us with letters and reminders to students and maintains our network of resource suppliers. Deputy Principal – Mr Daniel Wilson was once again an outstanding ‘Tour Leader’ of the Australian trip and continues to be an invaluable support person for all we do. All music staff join me in sending best wishes to the students who are now leaving school. We know that you will all have happy memories of music at Manurewa High School. The annual KBB festival was our next focus and once again we entered our Junior Band – now called Symphonic Band – our Senior Concert Band and the Jazz Band. It was a great thrill for the Senior Band to be placed among the top 4 concert bands and to be invited to open the Gala concert, in Holy Trinity Cathedral on the final night. The venue was spectacular and our band did us proud. A GOLD award was a wonderful tribute to the hard work of our conductor Miss Yih-hsin Huang and the musicianship of our students, carefully nurtured especially in the rehearsals in Australia. Both the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band were awarded Bronze medals. I would like to especially comment on the significant progress of the Jazz band. The programme they performed – including Shannon-lee Blackburn-Rangitaawa on vocals - was challenging and varied and a great deal of hard work went into its preparation. Their performances at school have

been enjoyed and appreciated by all. After KBB, came the ‘Stand Up Stand Out’ competition. ‘Rubberband’ won the band section and 2 of our soloists made the solo finals. The one remaining competition for the year was then, Pacifica Beats. In the Auckland finals Rubber Band’ placed second but was still selected for the National Finals to be held at ‘Telstra Clear’ on 24th September. As this day drew closer, excitement mounted and the publicity machine swung into action. ‘Our band, our backyard’ was the slogan, and it was an amazing night – September 24th - when our boys were chosen as national winners – Henry Laussen, Junior Taala, Raymond Pearce, Onesimus Mu’A, Neville Alaimalo and Nathan Simmons. Their win has resulted in television appearances and significant public performances especially around the ‘fan zones’ set up for the Rugby World Cup – great ‘stages’ to launch future careers maybe.

English Published Works: Tick Tock

A diction affliction

Tick tock... Tick tock... Time ticks by as no one notices the girl about to cry.

I’m sitting here trying to get inspiration Wondering what I’m going to be instigating and what I’m going to say about so many situations.. ‘Drugs’ is the topic that I’m going to start talking about Young people these days smoke with no doubt…

Clothed in rags, no shoes on her feet, she asks a stranger on the street “Sir could you spare a dollar or two? I’m sorry if this seems out of the blue.” The man turns his head and walks away, unaware she might not survive on more day.

Who knows when they’re going to stop smoking on lies. People who are selling drugs to our young ones are poisoning their minds. Are you going to protect them? Or are you going to hide, to stay under disguise?

Orphaned at age eight there was no place to go, there was no one around who the little girl would know. Wandering the city night in, night out the girl soon learned each route by route. Her second nature became begging for food, though most passed by claiming they weren’t “in the mood”.

People who promote drugs are cowards. They’re hurting our young ones, Yet going to their graves with bunches of flowers. Do you want to see your kids die from this? Or see people cry for this?

Now on a park bench she lets out a sigh while many more people just walk on by, unknowing of her struggles, unaware of her pain that just some food could save her even just one grain.

Drugs are not the answer to anything. All they do is bring you down and make you worse. Young ones try to get an endless supply into their systems. They don’t realise addiction is a real hard thing to get over.

But time ticks by as her body gets weak, her mind grows tired and her clothes start to reek. She shrivels in a heap as she closes her eyes, her breath tightens as she quietens her cries. No more suffering and no more pain, because Heaven won’t let that happen again.

But when they’re smoking these drugs People say they’re just ‘one of them thugs’ We need to give them a chance to change. I’m not here to support this topic But instead of judging them for what they do we need to help them stop it.

Tick tock... Tick tock... Have you heard the cries of the poor? Did you do something or did you just ignore? Time is passing while poverty gets worse, will you open your bag and take out your purse?

I guess all I want to say is… Say no to drugs Or get over your addiction. Say yes to education And get rid of your affliction.

The time is now, we must not wait. We must do something before it’s too late!

Media Studies LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! This year over 120 students in the 2011 Media Studies cohort took on the challenge of conceptualising, designing, planning, directing, shooting and editing their own cinematic masterpieces in just one term. Here are some snapshots…

The 01MES filmmakers, despite being new to the subject, produced some music videos which would put the originals to shame. Lip-syncing, performance and narratives with important messages were all featured. The students couldn’t wait to get started and took on multiple roles of actor, director, cameraman and editor.

A bunch of unsuspecting school students, a handful of psychopathic killers, two aliens separated at birth and a lost teddy were among the stars of the 02MES short films of 2011. With a record number of films being completed, the budding filmmakers took the audience on a journey filled with frights, tears, laughter and more twists and turns than a roller-coaster ride.

An impressive mix of thought-provoking documentaries and cleverly crafted mockumentaries were produced by the talented 03MES cohort this year. Their films explored issues such as the influence of celebrity culture, what it’s like to attend high school as a blind student and the little known condition of Animal Severity Syndrome. Never before had a large class banded together so well to support each other in achieving their visions. Well done for setting a new milestone of 100% completion!

International Week Since 2001, International Week at Manurewa High has been held each year to celebrate the cultural diversity of our school. Students and staff from over 40 countries and ethnic groups participate in activities that promote our unity in diversity. This year, the Principal, Mr Gargiulo, opened our 10th International Week in four year level assemblies that featured a flag ceremony and Kapa Haka. During the week, other events were: lunchtime concerts, food day, costume day and cultural entertainment by the Cook Island and Niuean Polyfest groups. The closing of International Week was by the Second Principal, Mrs Dixon. It again featured our Maori students doing a lively Kapa Haka. Worth noting was Costume Day. Many staff and students dressed up in various national costumes. Gorgeous Indian saris and impressive Samoan lavalava enhanced the colourful occasion. Three lunch-time concerts in the school hall were thoroughly enjoyed by the enthusiastic audience. Items by voluntary groups such as Indian, Samoan, Philippine, Japanese, Tongan and Chinese were much enjoyed by the audience. A medley dance item by the staff, led by Ms Laura Levi, brought loud applause. Possibly the highlight of the week was National Food Day. Crowds of staff and students filled the covered way; buying, eating and socialising. It appeared as if we were in an overseas market place. Even the heavy shower did not dampen the spirit of celebration. As usual we acknowledge with thanks the magnificent contribution of staff and students. Their work and creativity make International Week a successful and enjoyable occasion every year. Well done.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Science Department Science Fair 2011 - Mrs F Colyer Wednesday 24th August was a good night for our school. On that evening we attended the prize giving ceremony for the MIT South Auckland Regional Science and Technology Fair where our students performed very well indeed. The Premier award for ‘Best exhibit of the Fair’ went to Amy van de Weg of 13YLE, and this gives her automatic nomination to ‘Realize the Dream’ in Wellington as well as a hefty cheque. Amy also won Best Year 13 project, and was also First in her Category of Senior Science. Shalini Sanjeshni of 12WPT won a Highly Commended for her category, as well as taking away the Earth Science Award and she also won the University of Otago Award which includes a fully paid trip to spend a week at Summer Science School at Otago University. Jenny Lin of 12GDM won a special award for her project “keeping cookies crunchy”. In the category of “Secondary Consumer

Science” the two sisters Gomathi (12RCC) and Keerthana (10GBW) Rajasekaran both did well with the older sister gaining third place and Keerthana gaining highly commended. Other juniors who did well were Lydia FirminCavanagh and Daniel Blakeborough, both with a highly commended and both from 10 GBW.

It was very gratifying to see our students going up on stage and out-competing young people from so many other schools. The fact that there were close to 200 projects in the Fair highlights the stiff competition. Thanks to Dr Marsh and Ms. Dixon for their support on the evening, and of course the lab. technicians who really go the extra mile to help our students excel. We could not do it without them. Our goal for next year – get more boys involved- Daniel was rather outnumbered!

Youth ANZAAS - Amy Van de Weg forensics talk and the formal closing dinner. The forensics talk too place on Wednesday night. It was an accompaniment for a dessert evening, and a meet and greet of various scholarship beneficiaries. The talk was given by Angela van Dahl. She gave great insight into the field, and how it can impact on various trials and the way courts looks at cases. The formal closing dinner was held at the Science Centre. It was a science toy wonderland. We all ran around, playing with all the neat gadgets and seeing science principles come to life before our eyes with a flick of a switch. With the week done and dusted, we said our good byes that Thursday night. We all departed in good company, having made some lasting friendships. Already plans are being made for a reunion in December 2011 – January 2012. All in all, this trip was a great experience and I am very privileged to have been allowed to attend. Special thanks must be given to Mrs. Colyer for all of the hard work she put into my applications which allowed me to attend.

This year, I was given the privilege to go to a 6 day event being held in Brisbane for the annual Youth ANZAAS, a science conference. After many forms and letters, I was one of the students chosen by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend this trip. Up at 4:30 am, heading to the airport: our trip begins. Ling, another student, and I were on the 7:10am plane heading to Brisbane. Upon landing and clearing customs, we were met by a friendly staffie named Lou. We were taken back to our accommodation for the week: Kings College Halls of Residence. We got to know each other as participants slowly began to arrive. We played ice breaker games like ‘Fat Pony’ and ‘Baby Shark’. We were well received and everyone ensured we all settled in well. The staff were all of a relatively young age, most attending University, and thus could give us an up to date insight into University life. They told it as is, and what we needed in order to get there some day. The two highlights of the trip were the

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Massey Science Symposium MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL SCIENTISTS WIN AT MASSEY Analysing the effect of wine preservative on the vitamin Thiamine earned Manurewa High School pupil Amy van de Weg third place for Year 13 in School Science and Innovation Symposium at Massey University’s Albany campus recently. The school also made a clean sweep in the Year 12 category with Shalini Sanjeshni, first, for her project on the effect of magnetic fields on the growth of radish seeds, Gomathi Rajeskeran, second, who compared absorption, biodegradability and chlorine levels of eco-friendly and standard nappies, and third to Seamay Sok for her study on the effectiveness of pre-fertilised, prespaced seed sheets. Year 10 Manurewa High School pupil Daniel Blakeborough earned high praise from judges and second place for his innovative project titled The Sound of Power, using a piezoelectric sensor, which converts sound waves into electricity. In seeking a sustainable

method of producing electricity, he carried out tests to see if noise pollution can be turned into electricity and found h i g h pitched and abrupt sounds were the most effective. Pupils from Rosmini College, Kristin School, Albany Senior and Junior Schools, and Manurewa High School, Auckland, took part in the event. They displayed posters and gave presentations on science research projects to academic judges from Massey’s College of Sciences. Projects by the Year 10 to 13 pupils spanned diverse themes including nutrition, health and sports performance as well as science and environmental themes, and covering subjects from wine chemistry and baby powder ingredients to sports injury recovery and the difference between drop and goal kicks.

The symposium has been running at the Albany campus for the past five years. Winners in the Year 13 group won bursaries valued at $3000, $2000 and $1000 respectively for first, second and third.

On Friday 5th August I took our team of 8 students to compete in the Massey University Science and Innovation Symposium, and can report that they did very well indeed. In the Year 10/11 Category- Daniel Blakeborough of 10GBW came in second with his research into whether piezo-electric devices are better modulated by frequency or amplitude. In the year 12 category we achieved what had not been done before, our students took out first, second and also third place! Seamy Sok came third with her investigation of ‘seed sheets’, Gomathi Rajasekaran was second with her topic on eco-nappies and Shalini Sanjeshni came first for her investigation into

the effects of magnetic field and Zn ions (associated with power pylons) on seed growth. In the year 13 category Amy was invited to present her topic again, and she also came out of the event with third overall and a $1000 scholarship. Amy investigated the relative levels of sulfite preservative in wines and whether or not the sulfite ions could cleave Vitamin B1 in the body, leading to enhanced ‘hang-over’ effects. It is of note that Amy used no pre-existing methods but designed her testing regimes from scratch! As a direct consequence of being so impressed with the work of our students, Dairy NZ has offered us a $1000 prize for our Science Fair - great news! Following on from their success at Massey,

some of our students have been invited to present their projects via VC to students in the USA as part of the InterPacific Symposium. It was noted by many there that the standard of their science investigations was higher than that of their competition - further validating the hands- on approach in the Science Dept. Sadly, once again, our presentation skills were lacking and this cost us dearly. Presentation counted 50% of the score and this caused them to possibly not do as well as they could have. So now we know what we have to work on....

MASSEY UNIVERSITY SCIENCE AND INNOVATION SYMPOSIUM

A lot of our work required communication so we could not let the pressure get to us. We all did our best and hoped that the 7 minutes of talking would be over and, finally, it was. Shalini, Seamey and I were ready to collapse with relief. We enjoyed the rest of the day but the nerves came back during judging and the announcement of the winners…first Seamey was awarded third in the year 12 category, then I was awarded second and Shalini first. All our students and Mrs Colyer were thrilled to take home the top three places in year 12,

especially when told that this feat had never been achieved before. That day definitely was a day to remember because we had shown the capabilities of Manurewa High School as a whole. We would like to thank Mrs Colyer who would not take no for an answer and kept pushing us to be the best we could be. My advice would be to aim high and to listen to your teacher!!!!

The 5th of August was a day to remember. Heading to Massey University’s Science and Innovation Symposium early that rainy morning, the van was not only full of nerves but also excitement. We entered the venue and saw students everywhere and prestigious professors who oozed intelligence. I looked confident but inside I was jelly.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Physical Education The school and students have been very fortunate that a large number of the PE department give up their time to help coach and/or manage sports teams at Manurewa High. They include Miss Spraggon (Football and Touch), Miss McCall, Miss Dravitzki and Miss Burnside (Netball), Miss Hunter (Rugby and Volleyball), Ms Stapleton and Mr Alton (Football), Miss Kiff (Hillary Challenge). Highlights for the year for students and staff alike include Push Play Week, Inter Whanau Sports Day, Year 10 Tournament Day, Year 9 Fun Day, Lunchtime Sport and Inter Whanau sporting competitions. The latter ably led by Miss Spraggon with assistance from Miss Burnside and Miss Dravitzki. The students have been offered a wide range of learning opportunities in which to develop their knowledge and skills. They have experienced new challenges in a number of contexts and as per usual we enrich our students through a range of learning activities in lessons, day trip excursions, coaching sessions with our Year 9 classes and our highly anticipated camps. The camps offered provide a stimulating environment to learn in and from. They also provide many nonassessed learning opportunities and team bonding that cannot be replicated in the classroom. We always encourage our parents to let their children take the opportunity to go on camp, be it in Year 10 or those offered in our senior curriculum. We have had a big increase in numbers in our courses and we now have 3 Year 10 Sport Studies along with our Rugby Studies class, 3 Level One Sport Leadership classes, 2 Senior Outdoor Education classes as well, that sit alongside all of our core and option classes that we have available for our students. So you can say that we cater very well for students who wish to pursue Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Health as a subject area and as they look towards the future. We introduced 3 lessons of PE (instead of 2) into the Year 9 students’ timetable, which has been positively received. The Department is looking forward to contributing further to students’ education through the inquiry learning model when the school greets our new year 9’s with a Discovery Learning Centre. The PE department staff have been at the coal face of the schools many initiatives and our old HOD Mr Peter ‘I should give up playing sport’ Jones leads a team that includes Miss McCall and Ms Stapleton that are making strides to create a positive learning environment at Manurewa

High School. Miss McCall has been at the forefront of raising Maori student achievement in our school as she was appointed as a Specialised Classroom Teacher. As part of her role she has been entrusted with others to lift Maori and Pasifika student achievement. She planted the seed of celebrating Maori achievement, by having a Maori Achievement Celebration. The night was a huge success and she should feel very proud of herself and her Maori Advisory group the Kahui Kaiako Maori for their efforts. This group includes, Miss Spraggon, Mr Clemas and Miss Hunter. We look forward to celebrating further achievement next year. Finally, it would be remiss of the department not to mention the impact of the Rugby World Cup. It had a huge influence not only on our department but the whole school. Firstly, the first three terms were really long which both teacher and students struggled with at times. The last term being a short one has caught the senior students out a wee bit and they will be cramming in some serious study time. Secondly, it provided a great amount of material to use for school assessment and assignments which was met with great enthusiasm by students. Thirdly, the festive atmosphere created by the World Cup lit up Manurewa High during September and October and made the place a sometimes crazy but fun place to teach and learn. The wearing of the different team colours, the fervent patriotism, flag waving, friendly banter and smiley faces was a real highlight of the year. We would like to congratulate the All Blacks for their win as it provided a tremendous ‘buzz’ for staff and students alike. We wish to take the time to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. We bid farewell to our Year 13 students and we welcome back our year 10 to 12 students next year along with a new crop of year 9’s. 2011 Physical Education and Health Department.

IN CAELUM ASCENDE

If one word sums up our year in the Physical Education department that word would be “BUSY”. There has also been tremendous change not only in the department but school wide. The introduction of the Whanau System has meant that the PE staff were placed into different ‘Whanau’. This has enabled the school to have PE staff in every Whanau to offer support and expertise in inter-Whanau activities, although The Kotuku Whanau were a bit greedy and had over half the PE department in their Whanau alone. It was pleasing to see Miss Spraggon and Mr Clemas step up and become Whanau Deans for Te Ao Marama Whanau and Kotuku Whanau respectively. The changes did not stop there. Craig Render and Aimee Snelgrove were married in March and then departed for Japan at the end of term two. It was great that they were able to teach during those first terms, Aimee as head of Health and Craig in the capacity of relief teacher. Craig also played a role in providing the induction for Miss Pattinson’s replacement, Ms AngelaClaire Stapleton all the way from England. Although she was expected earlier in the term she had visa issues and she was eventually allowed into the country 9 weeks into term 1. We also welcomed Mr Josh Alton into the fold. It would be fair to say it took a while for him to get used to the school, students and the PE department’s sense of humour. However, he has shown great perseverance and has made tremendous progress. We would also like to congratulate Josh and Keeley on getting married in the October holidays. There must have been something in the PE water dispenser that Mr Alton filled as part of his first year duties, as Mr Rugnathji, Miss Burnside and Mr Clemas all got engaged this year. We continue to offer so many courses in the area of PE that we had to appoint two more teachers to the department. Mr Dhiren Rugnathji and Mr Dion Reed. This has started to balance the female to male ratio and we now have 4 males in a department that now boasts 12. Staff that returned from last year are our Head of Department Miss Sarah Story, our assistant Head of department Miss Katie Spraggon, Miss Sarah Kiff, Mr Nigel Clemas, Miss Sarah Burnside, Miss Tracey Dravitzki, Miss Claire Hunter and our final member of the team and professional colleague Miss Nichola McCall.

Vision Resource Centre The Manurewa High School Vision Resource Centre was established in 1966 to allow students who are blind and low vision to facilitate inclusion into a regular school setting. It is unique in New Zealand, as it is a specialist Resource Centre in a secondary school that is designed to specifically support students with vision impairment. Through the years there have been many changes in technology and teaching approaches, but the basic philosophy has remained essentially unchanged: - Encourage and empower students who are blind or low vision to achieve in all aspects of their lives through education, communication and self-advocacy. The Vision Resource Centre has placed great emphasis on the need to develop student’s self-confidence and independence. All students are empowered with a “can do” attitude and tackle their daily tasks with confidence.

The Resource Centre is staffed by a fully qualified Resource Teacher of Vision who supports the students and classroom teachers and Teacher Aides to support students who are blind and low vision. Specialist equipment, the production of resources and the latest technology are available on site to help students with vision impairment to best access the curriculum. The proximity of BLENNZ allows ready access to services such as Music tuition, Immersion Courses, the Residential Hostels, and the National Formats Library. This year the students attended a Camp held by the Rotary Club of Remuera. The camp was held at Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges. Once again it was delightful to see all of the participants show great courage, positive attitudes and lots of determination in the tasks undertaken. The Camp proved to be a real success, and everyone had a great time. The camp provided the opportunity and environment to get together, and to enjoy a rewarding experience for all. The students had pushed their own limits, and had succeeded in different activities which would have given them a real sense of achievement.

Lavinia Vehikite 09GSU attended a Teenage Drama Course in Wellington where she played the role of grandmother in a play “The Girl in the Hoodie”. This is a modernised version of Little Red Riding Hood. She developed skills and techniques to support body, voice, movement in space in a theatrical environment.

Spirit of Adventure Waking up at 6:45 every morning for a gruelling 7:00 swim was not exactly the way I thought I would spend my school holidays. After we’d had our swim and breakfast we got into our groups of ten and did some cleaning. Cleaning onboard the Spirit meant, scrubbing the decks, cutting vegetables, cleaning the bunkrooms and everyone’s favourite job; cleaning the toilets. Once the cleaning was done, we would set sail and head off to the next location. We did a variety of activities everyday. On day 7 while we were anchored in a harbour, we were all given the opportunity to climb to the top of the highest mast at 65m tall. I was eager to reach the top. Another activity had us sailing out on small sailboats in our various groups. However, my group was not the most successful at sailing this little boat. The small sailboats were impossible to flip which is good news. However, they were not unsinkable. We found this out when we were attempting to turn and took on huge amounts of water. One of my favourite activities was when we went ashore and had a barbeque and a bon fire on the beach. The additional

toasted marshmallows and campfire songs just topped it all off. On another day we went ashore for a tramping expedition to the natural hot pools. However, upon our arrival we found that these ‘hot’ pools were anything but. The number one highlight for me on the Spirit was the food. The buffet style all you can eat food was so good I managed

to gain 5kgs within 10 days. All in all, the Spirit was a great way to meet new friends and be challenged in ways I have never been challenged before. It was awesome opportunity that I will never forget. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that helped me to experience the amazing 10 days voyage on the Spirit of Adventure.

School Librarians send messages to their friends by Uspace, even when they are sitting right next to each other. We librarians we don’t mind we’re too busy laughing at the stupidity of these students from the safety of our office. Now to the most important subject; the Student Librarians. Society’s stereotype of Librarians is boring, old, hate noise and are like a shrink. HOWEVER that is not true…Manurewa High School Librarians add a new definition to the word and turn the Library in to a sacred Haven for us all. Most people consider librarians goody two shoes or even such things as nerds but over my past 3 years as a Librarian and two of those years being Head Librarian I have learnt that these students are laid back, down to earth people that just enjoy the comfort of the library. We are not robots, we do enjoy a bit of fun here and there. Being a librarian can be a tough job, manning the desk, shelving books, dealing with students who can’t seem to read the HUGE noticeable signs and of course helping students finding the best book for them. I have enjoyed spending my senior years with these lovely people, teaching them how to humiliate people (my favourite job), taking charge and well treating everyone

63

with respect (yes even the juniors.) It is sad to put down my badge and say goodbye, but be assured the people I have trained will surely not let me down. The Librarians are very humorous people to be around so when you see a picture like this: You can say “Ha! MH Librarians are so not like that they are Zombie Hunters and hide weapons in the shelves” And we will say “Damn right we are” because you only get the best from Manurewa High School Librarians. Thanks for the fun guys!!! Written by Ashleigh Purea

Manurewa High School’s Library is guarded by the finest librarians in town, Sue and Toni. These two ladies have a sense of humour that keeps the young librarian army alive. Just joking! But really over the years they have been with the library they have provided a safe sanctuary for every single student of Manurewa High School. They grant access to the computers to complete homework (good for those who do not have internet at home.) In the library we have four sections that are suited for everyone. There is the fiction area; a quiet space for the young to allow the authors words to creep into their minds and let their imagination run WILD! The magazine and biography area for the people who just like to read about the latest gossip and learn more about a certain person (also a place for the librarians to have their end of year shared lunch.) The large non- fiction side is a great study area for seniors but mainly large groups who just talk which allows us librarians to tell everyone to “BE QUIET!!” Oh and you can never forget the computers which some people use to

Hospitality and Catering In Level 2 & 3 Hospitality and Catering, we make a wide range of meals and desserts from all over the world, and present them creatively and professionally. With our successful meals, we enter competitions such as table setting or fruit flan which involves making the perfect dessert. There are a lot of dishes that can be produced and entered for competitions. The list is endless! Which always see Manurewa High School students earning top awards for their culinary crafts. We also provide delicious lunches in the Manners Cafe for school staff, and cater for various school events including the recent M.I.T expo. The Level 3 Hospitality and Catering class also takes trips to different restaurants and factories to investigate the methods and techniques used in the food industry, including a trip to the Altura Coffee Factory in September, and previous trips to the Manukau Institute of Technology, where we dine at their restaurant and sample the food of the students there. However for this class, the icing on top of the cake is definitely the hard work the students all put in to making our own food - infusing our own taste and style into unique dishes where the reward in the final product is not only the effort put in, but also the taste and appearance. MY EXPERIENCE IN TABLE SETTING in New Zealand Secondary Schools for Table Setting. At the end of the day, I walked out of the arena with my head held high and had a lot more confidence in myself and also earned the respect and friendship of my peers. The people at the fare were talented, professional, and skilled and had many years of experience. I would like to applaud the 5 year 12 students who took on the opportunity for the first time and congratulate them for their achievement and success. I wish them luck for the challenge next year. Thanks to the 02/03 HAC students for their support especially Sekoa, Jacklin and Manesh who were with us the whole time. Huge thanks to Mrs D Chandra for the opportunity of this lifetime experience. My table setting days were an awesome experience. I went into the competition thinking “what could possibly go wrong? I mean how hard could it be to set a table for 4 in 30 minutes? Believe it or not it was hard! A lot of time, effort commitment and sacrifices were put into this competition. I had the privilege of teaching 8 of my peers (Joseph, Lavi, Kiri, April, Liz, Monisha, Allison and Chey) the techniques and front of house skills that I learnt from my peers last year. It was hard but it was worth all the tantrums and moments that I had shared with them. Our big day was finally here. Walking into the arena we had to look smart and act like we were the only competition around. I went into my heat and performed to the best that I could, and for some reason I went from being the 1st in the region of Auckland to 3rd best

Writing IV Line By Hannah Kainuku Cancer. I loathe the word. It gives you unjustified pain and can take everything from you. It took the greatest person I ever came to love. A woman of honour, of pride, and of joy. She was my life, my best friend, and my confidant. She was bliss, pure bliss. She was my nana, and although I lost her at such a young age, I remember her for everything she was. The loss of my nana changed me. I couldn’t open up to anyone. I completely shut off my relationship with my mum’s mum, and still to this day I still shut her out because I didn’t want be let down. Let down by life, and the things it has taken away from me. Jessica Hamilton has changed my life. She’s changed me for the better. I couldn’t ask for anything more. She was the first and only person I could open up to without being afraid of judgement. She is more than a best friend. She is my other half. Nothing really quite captures the sense of loss I felt when Jessica told me about the cancer. I remember the moment very clearly, not that I want to, and it used to replay constantly in my mind. “The bone in my left leg has multiple tumours growing inside of it, with the largest one being right under my knee”. The news hit me all at once, and I didn’t know how

to take it in. I was completely drained of all emotion. How was I supposed to take it in, when I could feel myself shutting down all over again? As I said, cancer. I loathe the word. I felt my eyes go hot, filling up with tears, as I watch her lay there. I couldn’t hear anything. It was around 6:30pm at Auckland Hospital, the noise from murmuring nurses fluttering up and down the hallway must have been flooding into the room where I sat with her family. But it was silent. Almost pin-drop silent. I concentrated on her breathing. Multiple cords and tubes were running in and out of her body. Like a puppet with strings, she seemed lifeless. The small breathes she took made me feel numb, helpless. Like I couldn’t help the one person that I wanted to support the most. My eyes stared at the IV line that disappeared into her arm. That’s the one thing about this surgery she had been scared of the most. Getting the IV inserted into her arm. No, it wasn’t that she was getting her bone cut out of her leg and replaced with a donor bone that scared her. Nor was it the long and hard road to recovery she had ahead of her that scared her. But it was this small, tiny little IV line that was going to be put into her arm within a fraction of second which scared her. Seeing her leg resting on a hospital pillow,

inside a brace stuffed with multiple layers of bandaging, made me smile my first smile in a while. Because I knew that the only thing she would be worried about is the IV line that is coming out of her arm. And I knew that for a fact. That small moment, that small ten second moment, where I saw my best friend lying in a hospital bed will never leave my memory. I had always questioned myself as to why I couldn’t forget this moment. This moment was empty. There were no interactions. No words exchanged. Nothing. All that moment was for me was focussing on this small IV line that trailed into her arm. But that’s exactly it. That’s exactly what this moment was-small. It was nothing compared to what Jessica had been and was going to go through. I realised she had fought through her fear of getting the IV line, to fight the Cancer. This moment has changed me for the better. It has taught me to fight every ordeal, every struggle, and every problem that may come into my life. Funnily enough, I realised that the Cancer didn’t matter. It was nothing. It sounds silly really, that the Cancer didn’t matter. But Cancer isn’t Jessica Hamilton. Cancer isn’t my best friend. Jessica is.

Rugby Report 2011 1st XV The 2011 1st XV Rugby Season began with the return of 12 players from the 2010 squad and a new coaching and management staff of: Head Coach: Romi Ropati, Forward Coach: Harold Soe, Assistant Back Coach: Danny Atamu, Technical Advisor: H. Kowhai and Manager: C. Hunter. The preseason programme resulted in close losses to Auckland Grammar, Hamilton Boys High School and Gisborne Boys High School. Once the 2011 season got underway the team were undefeated until their first match against Wesley College 1st XV which was lost in a 3 tries to 1 defeat. After this defeat there were a few internal changes in the coaching and management staff and the addition

of H. Chapman as Forward Coach. Wesley College 1st XV proved once again (as in previous years) to be Manurewa High School 1st XV’s nemesis. However both met in the 2011 Counties Manukau 1st XV championship final. After a great display of schoolboy first XV rugby, Manurewa High School was successful in defeating Wesley 7 – 5. In doing so Manurewa High School’s 2011 1st XV became the first team to defeat Wesley College in 17 years of Counties Manukau 1st XV championship finals. In qualifying for the 2011 national coed rugby finals, Manurewa High School defeated Western Heights High School but lost to the eventual qualifiers Cambridge High School. All in all however a very successful season was achieved.

2011 3rd XV Rugby and can honestly say “what could have been”. We had a very talented team and we proved when we played as a collective unit then we could upset anyone on our day. We had individuals that have special raw talent who with hard work could really make a name for themselves. My highlight was seeing our player’s attitude work ethic change once we won a few gamesthe belief was there. Another highlight was seeing Sean Fairweather leading by example when the going got tough. An inspirational Captain.

The Thirds can reflect back on 2011

in controversial circumstances. Unfortunately, we were beaten by a more passionate team despite some unusual calls by the referee. Overall, a year full of promises. For those leaving - God bless and best of luck in future endeavours. To all those returning stay safe over the holidays and best luck for 2012. Lastly, huge thanks on behalf of the Team to Glen (Coach) and Mr Williams (Manager) for all your assistance, perseverance and commitment. A special thanks to Shane for his assistance and direction. Mr.R Watson ( Manager/Coach)

I was fortunate enough to help manage and at times coach our Third Fifteen Rugby Team for 2011. This was a year that closely resembled a roller coaster ride, through ups and downs and periods of jubilation. At times we struggled to field a full side and at times we struggled with a mere handful at practice. However, those with the passion and determination soldiered on. As the year progressed it also became obvious we had to compete against not only the opposition but also the referee (the less said the better!!!!)

Project K For the first time MHS signed up with the Foundation for Youth Development to run Project K at MHS. FYD’s Project K is a 14-month programme for Year 10 and Year 11 students. It uses the backdrop of New Zealand’s beautiful outdoors to help 13 – 15 year olds who lack self-confidence or with other factors holding their development back. The programme inspires young people to reach their full potential through building self-confidence, teaching essential life skills such as goal setting and team work, promoting good health and a positive attitude. Project K has three core components, Wilderness Adventure, Community Challenge and Mentoring, students learn: • Self-reliance • Team building • Self-confidence • Perseverance • Goal setting • Good health and life skills The unique Project K process was developed in consultation with leading educationalists and youth workers and is a catalyst for positive change. Students do not pay to take part in the programme.

Camp Diary by Angelina Lee Day 1 We got together at school with all of our gear. One of us arrived a bit late, then we checked that we had all of what we would need for next two and a bit weeks. We loaded our gear into the trailer and eight of us went with Lisa and Vicky and off we went with the rest going with Dave. Our first stop was at Waitomo at the Kaputuhi Marae. We got our bags and went into the Marae. It was a big building with the roof held up by big carved beams, and the walls had patterns all over them. We had lunch outside. I had forgotten my lunch and some of the others shared theirs with me. Then Sanne and I helped Lisa and Vicky pack the food for the first week into boxes, the others made the beds in the big room, Lisa divided us up into groups for cooking, I was with Famiza, John and Horora, then we sat around and talked until about five. The cooking group went off to cook our dinner, they cooked burgers for us all, and then we wrote up our logbooks for the day. We then had showers and went to the sleeping room where we had a meeting. One of the things I was asked to say there was the funniest moment of the day.

our three day tramp. We also put the clothes we would need for those days. I showed Lisa and Vicky my bites which were very itchy, red and raised welts. They said I needed to see a Doctor and we went into town with Dave to see him. He gave me a prescription for some cream to rub into the bites, it still felt itchy as!! It was still raining very hard and we spent more time in our tents, during the night we had rain, scary thunder and lightening.

Day 3 The weather is really horrible, wet, dark clouds, windy, raining and cold. We hiked anyway with our packs, our rain jackets kept us dry. The exercise kept us warm, I enjoyed it. The view from the top was super. We could see lots of other hills and mountains and a lot of green trees as far as the eye could see. It stopped raining on the way up and stayed fine for the rest of the day. I enjoyed today’s hike because it was quite easy to walk and did not have Taiwan’s steep mountains. After tea we had a last shower.

Day 6, 7 and 8 At the end of each day’s tramp I felt very tired. There are no showers any more. I missed them. Every day we carried our heavy pack in which we carried our share of the food that we had divided up amongst us all. We walked for 6 or 7 hours each day – my shoulders, arms and legs were very sore at the end of each day, when we walked up a hill, I could not fell all of my body – my arms were numb. And when someone said STOP, I was thinking YAY – I can relax! My pack was so heavy I needed to bend and stretch to make my body my own again. When we had finished our tramp we changed and jumped straight into the lake it felt so good!! I felt home sick every night. All of our tramps over these three days were around Lake Okataina, the first night we camped beside a sign that said NO CAMPING. On day 7 we stayed in Humphreys Bay, at night there were so many mosquitos both outside and inside my tent, in the end, I was so tired that it did not matter – we slept with the mosquitos. On day 8 we walked out of the bush!! We stayed at the outlet, this place was very cool!

Day 4 Today we left to go to Rerewhakaaitu Lake and Rainbow Mountain. I found this place very beautiful. We could see reflections in the lake, which was lovely and blue. It was raining for most of the day and it was very cold. We set up camp. Because it was raining we spent a lot of time in our little tents in our sleeping bags. We spent our time chatting. Today I wore my jandals around, wow, do I regret that. Every bit of skin open to the air got bitten by insects. Day 5 We packed our food into our packs for

69

Day 2 Still at the Marae. We got up at about eight o’clock and got dressed. I had not slept well because I was not used to that place. Group one made us all breakfast (weet bix, fruit salad, milk, toast and milo) we all did our own dishes. Lisa, Vicky and Dave taught us how to put up our own little tents. There was just enough room in our tent for Sanne, Holly and me. We learnt how

to do this quite quickly. They showed us to put a water proof sheet on the ground first. They showed us how to open farm gates. They also showed us how to pack our back pack. Group two cooked lunch for us, in the afternoon we went to see some boiling mud. It looked like horrible hot grey porridge. When we got back, we talked about getting ready for our hike to Rainbow Mountain tomorrow, our first hike, (8 km). It was our turn to cook tonight, we made nachos.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Day 9 I thought that we had finished tramping but today we had to walk 3.5 km, this time I only had to carry my school bag. This was a very easy walk but my shoulders were still sore, where I had been bitten. Today we saw such a beautiful water fall! Day 10 We still can’t shower. We washed ourselves by swimming in the lake. We learned how to get into and out of Kayak even if it turns over in the water, a bit scary! Day 11 and 12 I was the leader today. Lately, the weather has been bad although it has been sunny - it has also been cloudy and windy ... sad. We went Kayaking today and we were on the water for about six hours. We were so tired when we finished, we had planned for more Kayaking on Day 12 but it turned out to be so cold, wet and windy, that it would have been dangerous, so we had to help the boys load the Kayaks onto the truck, my hands were frozen!! We left the camp ground today(Day 12) instead of tomorrow. We went to a swimming pool but I did not go because I thought it would be too cold, but it was as warm as a spa pool! … …Then we went to Kaputuhi Marae – a very simple house but not camping out made it the best. I had two weeks of no showers! This place had water, but today there wasn’t any.

Day 13 Today it was raining and windy. We finished our breakfast and then we went on a day walk 3-4 hours – had our lunch and then we back to the Marae. We all had to write our presentations for our return and then we had to say it to our instructors again and again and again. I had a shower this afternoon and I am happy because I am clean! Day 14 Today’s weather is the same as yesterday – horrible – raining, windy and cold. Today we are all cleaning our backpacks. After lunch we went rock climbing. This was fun and very exciting. This was the first time I have ever been rock climbing. Day 15 Today’s weather is a lot better than yesterday. At least it is not raining any more. When we had finished breakfast we cleaned up the sleeping room, the van and the car. After lunch we went to Hot Water Beach and there we spread the soft wet warm grey mud all over ourselves and then we washed it off again, it felt so good! When we finished swimming there, some of the boys wanted to go swimming in Blue Lake. Two girls and I didn’t go because we were too tired. Later the boys went in the van and I and two of the girls went in the car, and we drove around sightseeing through the local country side. I was so tired I nearly went to sleep – then back to the Marae. We had dinner but I wonder if it wasn’t cooked properly because I got a very sore tummy.

Day 16 Today we woke up at 7 o’clock and had breakfast. After this I with two other girls cleaned our toilets. At 11 o’clock Lisa and Vicky went into town to buy food, today our lunch is bread and jam! When they came back everybody was asleep. In the afternoon we wrote our survey for an hour then we had our celebration dinner – fish and chips and fizzy drinks, then ice cream for dessert. Day17 We drove all the way back to Auckland – to Long Bay – the MERC club house, there we washed the Kayaks and had lunch, we practised our presentations for the last time then we drove back to school. When we got there all our parents had gathered in the staff room to welcome us home with speeches and food. We all made our presentations one by one, I was the last one. Mr Jones then gave us a cuddle and our certificates and then we got to eat the food. Then we went home. This camp was excellent. I learnt so much about myself. Thank you.

ILC Camp

Making meals a time of sharing, and talking about the adventures that we were taking part in. The teachers on camp had a great time. Though we were all exhausted we were expecting this and enjoyed the time with the students. For the students it is a time to see the teachers in a different light as we get in the mud with the students and experience the same things that they do. At the end of camp on the last day we were exhausted and tired. Yet everyone pitched in and helped with the cleaning. All the groups had their own responsibilities though when people had finished we helped in the other groups. The students then went down to the field and most of

71

the boys took part in a friendly game of tackle. The final meal was hotdogs on the field. By this stage a lot of the students were tired but everyone was so excited with the time that we had spent together. When it came time to leave the camp and get on the bus none of the students wanted to. They had enjoyed themselves so much that everyone wanted to stay. There was a lot of hugging and goodbyes but eventually we did get on the bus much to the relief of tired teachers. It was a great camp and we look forward to doing all over again next year.

IN CAELUM ASCENDE

The excitement had been building for quite some time and the students arrived early in the morning ready to depart. Everyone was on the bus and was buzzing as the engine started and the journey began. Two hours later we arrived at camp and the Year 13 Leaders were standing there waiting for us. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!! The camp was arranged for the second week in Term 3. Though we were worried that the weather would be cold for the students it turned out to be an excellent week. The Year 13 students arrived on the Monday and prepared the camp for us. When we arrived on the Tuesday we were warmly welcomed by our new leaders. The cabins were beautiful and the students settled in quickly. The leaders soon took control and we met in the hall to make our groups. No time was wasted and soon we were outside in the sunshine starting on the challenges. The students quickly got into the groove of things and it was great to see the Year 13 students take charge. In fact by the end of the camp the ‘hero worship’ from the ILC students was obvious. They looked up to their leaders and the leaders in their stride rose to the challenge. They were excellent role models. The five main activities for the camp was kayaking, rafting, bush craft, orienting and low ropes challenge. Each of the groups had a session at each of these activities with the leaders sharing the responsibility. The group were accompanied by an adult and all safety measures were put in place. The students enjoyed the activities and it was great to see that all the students rose to the challenge and participated. On the Thursday the students took part in the teachers challenge. This was a chance for all the students to relax and take part as a team. This was a great afternoon and the students were running around the campsite carrying their kayaks. The night before it had rained heavily and the river rose by over a metre. It was amazing to see the waterfall roaring with such power and we had to cancel the kayaking for that day. The students on the camp enjoyed plenty of good meals together. We made sure that during these times the students all came together with their groups. For some of the students sitting down and eating a meal with friends was a new and enjoyable experiences.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Arts Person of the Year Nominees for Arts Person of the Year Starcia O’Neill Starcia’s strengths are in Dance and the Visual Arts. Starcia has been a committed student with dance over her years at Manurewa High School. She has been a member of the Rewa All Stars and participated in the StandUp Stand Out competition which this group has won for the last two years. Starcia also participated in Stage Challenge. Starcia has gained certificates for her performance with Bring it On, and has been an integral member of the group since she started at this school and led the group in 2010. Starcia has also been highly placed in Hip Hop competitions outside of school. Her contribution to Dance and Hip hop during her time at Manurewa has been extensive. She is a talented, hard working dancer with huge potential. She was also presented the Arts Special Award for her work with Dance and received the Instep Dance trophy for 2010. Starcia has made an outstanding contribution to Visual Arts over the years. Last year Starcia was also awarded for her overall commitment and effort and was awarded the Special Arts trophy for Best Senior Maori Artist for 2010. Starcia has been an outstanding student who is able to balance her extracurricular commitments with her school work and achieve exceptionally with both. The breadth of Starcia’s involvement in the Arts is extensive and she has shown loyalty and commitment to everything she has been involved with.

Cassie Ganley Cassie Ganley is an outstanding Dance student, performer and choreographer. She has contributed immensely to Dance and the Performing Arts during her 5 years at Manurewa High. This year Cassie conceptualised, choreographed, taught and produced an emotionally inspiring theatre work “Manurewa goes to Cambodia” for Stage Challenge. This was a story about her journey to Cambodia in 2010. Cassie taught 60 students, some who have never danced before. Very few students would have been able to take on the role of directing a performance on their own and Cassie managed and led this whole process. To her absolute credit our Stage Challenge group placed 2nd in this hugely prestigious competition. Cassie has the ability to dance any genre excellently which is an exceptional gift and talent. She has achieved outstanding success in Dance and in her own dancing outside of the school. Cassie has been an integral part of the Bring it On group for 5 years and was one of the leaders of this group in 2010. She has also represented the school at Stand Up Stand Out as part of the Rewa All Stars crew who have won this competition for the last three years. Cassie has been a cast member of two school productions Grease and Guys and Dolls. Cassie choreographed and was in charge of the main dances for Guys and Dolls. Cassie is always looking for ways to encourage others and support the Arts community at school and was on the Arts Council for two years and also teaches Dance in the community. Cassie is one of the most professional, committed, dedicated and talented students we have ever had at Manurewa High School. She is a credit to herself and her family and is an inspiration to others.

Junior Taala Junior Taala is an outstanding contemporary musician, equally comfortable on drum kit, keys or as a vocalist and becoming accomplished also in original composition. Junior accompanied massed singing during International Week and then distinguished himself by being one of 4 Manurewa High School music students who had original songs selected for the top 50 in the Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition . Junior performed in our school concert and also provided the musical score for the Telstra Clear Pacific Centres’ funding application. He worked hard in the recording studio assisting with the final recordings of all our soloists while at the same time preparing for the coming Pacifica Beats heats with ‘Rubberband’. He entered ‘Stand Up Stand Out’ as both a soloist and with the band and both reached the finals. Rubberband’s winning of NZ Pacifica Beats was undoubtedly one of the highlights of his efforts this year but his contribution to our school music in many ways has been immense.

Neville Alaimalo

Neville has distinguished himself this year as bass player in both the school Jazz Band and with ‘RubberBand’. While following these pursuits he has proven himself to be one of best contemporary High School bass players in the country. His musicianship is not limited to the bass guitar and his musical ‘skill set’ includes guitar and vocals. Neville has taken Drama for five years and is a talented and able performer. He has played a variety of characters but the highlight would be his role of Lysander in his 03 Drama production of Midsummer Night’s Dream. Neville takes direction well and is always committed to performing to the best of his ability. As a performer in the Samoan Group for Polyfest, Neville showed leadership, immense pride in his culture and was totally engaging to watch perform on stage. Neville has a lot to offer the Performing Arts as he is talented not only as an actor but he also has untapped potential as a singer and dancer.

IN CAELUM ASCENDE

Henry has had a very busy year in music. On bass guitar he provided the foundation of the bass sound in Senior Concert Band, which travelled to Sydney and Canberra in July and soon afterwards won a shining gold award in the KBB Auckland Secondary School festival. On drum kit he accompanied international week massed singing and then led the rhythm section of the Jazz Band- receiving commendation from both judges in the jazz section of the KBB festival. As the drummer for ‘RubberBand’ he has this evening received National Distinction for winning 1st place in the NZ Pacifica Beats competition with recording contracts and public performances ahead of him. Henry committed himself to singing bass in the 2011 Big Sing Choir as it prepared for its competitive performances in May and June and Henry assisted in the York Street recordings of our 4 successful contemporary singer/songwriters in August. Henry has proved himself to be both good humoured and reliable in all he does. Both his musical experience and musicianship are outstanding for a young man of his age and he has made an enormous contribution to the Arts programme in our school.

MANUREWA HIGH SCHOOL 2011

Whakamihia a Tatou Akonga Maori We are very proud as a school to have held our first ever official Māori Celebration this year. The evening was organised by Kāhui Kaiako Māori (KKM), who are a group of teachers within the school dedicated to raising Māori student achievement. It was a beautiful evening equivalent to a Māori prize-giving which in now set to be an annual event in the school calendar. The purpose of the night was to invite all Māori students and their whānau to acknowledge our students and their achievements in order to promote success for our rangatahi. The separate celebration allowed the opportunity for Māori students and whānau to celebrate in a way they felt comfortable and our community shone in that arena. KKM have identified there to be a growing 456 students within our kura who are of Māori decent from all over the motu, although to Matua Adlam’s delight many are from the mighty northern iwi of Ngā Puhi. The night was also about showcasing the talents of our Māori students and we had inspiring performances from Rachel Fenton, Mitchell Clark, Hoera Kemp-Pou and Nathan Simmons with the Smokefree Pasifika Beats winners Rubberband. Nga mihi nui kia koutou mo tō āwhina me te tautoko. We acknowledged our top Māori students for each year level and congratulations to the recipients for 2011: Year 9 Wahine: Savanna Blackburn- Rangitaawa – Ngāti Rangi / Tūwharetoa / Te Atihaunui-āPāpārangi Tāne: Bailey Hoera – Ngā Puhi Year 10 Wahine: Michaela Clark – Ngā Puhi Tāne: Esra Griffiths – Te Rarawa / Ngāti Kahungunu Year 11 Wahine: Ashley Tīpene - Ngā Puhi / Ngāti Awa / Te Arawa Tāne: Jacob Diaz –Ngā Puhi Year 12 Wahine: Nicole Wiremu – Tūhoe Tāne: Mitchell Clark – Ngā Puhi Year 13 and Overall Top Students Wahine: Charlotte Davis – Ngāti Ruanui (Taranaki) Tāne: Nathan Simmons – Ngā Puhi / Tūwharetoa

Finally a big thank you to KKM , all the students and whānau who shared the experience with us and teachers, Senior Leadership and Board Members who supported KKM and our Māori students in the build-up and on the night. We look forward to an even bigger and better celebration next year, so be ready whānau!
