POPULAR CHRISTMAS MARKET BACK Heading into its fifth year, Christmas Creations Market is excited to be back in Springfield on Sunday, December 3, 10am – 2pm, at the RejuvenateYou Hub, 17 Domain Road, Springfield. Event organiser Ainsley Burton says, “As always, we’re grateful for all our beautiful stall holders with their amazing creations, as the market wouldn’t happen or be so wonderful without you. Thank you to those who have come back to support us again this year, bringing back your magic and we also warmly welcome a great range of new stalls, new faces, and new creations.” “We are so grateful for you all sharing your magic, love and passions and showcasing your highstandard products for our shoppers to come and pick up their Christmas goodies, presents, stocking fillers, decorations, and celebration pieces.” As in the past, the popular

Christmas raffle will be on sale comprised of gifts donated by each stall with plenty of draws and chances to win. The raffle will be drawn on Friday December 8, 2023, with all proceeds going towards the Tawera Reserve Project in Springfield. Tickets sell for $2 each or three for $5. Ainsley says, “As we have been lucky other years, let’s hope the weather stays kind. Most of the stalls are indoors, but we do have some outside stalls too. Georgie from Village Coffee will be serving her best beverage and goodies to go with it.” She also suggests people bring plenty of cash as not all the stalls offer EFTPOS facilities. “We look forward to local support and welcome visitors from around the Christchurch and Canterbury area to come and visit our little market and Springfield township.” See advertisement on the front page for further details.

The Malvern Community Board, assisted by the Selwyn Sister City Committee, was delighted to again welcome a delegation from Yubestsu, their Japanese Sister City, for a four-day visit recently. Yubestsu is a region on the northern coast of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. It is a major fishing port but also has many similarities to the Malvern area, being an intensive cropping and dairy farming area. The delegation was led by Yubetsu mayor Mr Karita, Council chairperson Mr Murata, Sister City Committee chair Mrs Uchino and Mr Nakagawa from the Yubetsu Council Office. Mr Karita and Mrs Uchino have visited in the past and are well -known to previous members of the Community Board and the Sister-City Committee. The visit focussed on different aspects of the community including a day in the Lake Coleridge and Hororata area visiting dairy and sheepmilking farms and watching the traditional sheep-shearing. Malvern Community Board acting chair Bruce Russell provided a garden visit to his

home in West Melton. The delayed 20-year visit was marked by a tree planting in Tussock Square in Darfield. This was followed by a formal welcome at the Darfield Service Centre and Library. A dinner on the final night of the visit gave members of the wider community, those who have visited Yubetsu or have hosted Yubestu visitors, an opportunity to meet the visitors and renew friendships. During the evening, Sister City chairperson Allison Rosanowski and Avis Hewson were presented with special awards from the Yubetsu

Town Council to mark their contributions to the relationship. A delegation of members of the Malvern Community Board and the wider community will visit Yubetsu in either 2024 or 2025 to celebrate the 25 years of the Friendship relationship with The Malvern Community Board. A group of Yubestsu High School students were also in the area visiting Darfield High School - the School has run a student return visit relationship with Yubetsu for over 23 years.

To the Editor: In response to the Council’s response to Dave Askins letter (Published Malvern News November 16). The Council has a case of two hands. On the one hand it says communities should be looking after themselves and doing things for themselves. On the other hand, if we (the communities) do something, they (the Council) threaten us with fines that will bankrupt individuals. Mike Davies, Hororata

PARISH THANKS VOLUNTEERS Malvern Anglican Parish wish to thank the volunteers who helped set up and execute their annual fundraisers. Spokesperson Helena Waters says, “The Book Fair, White Elephant and Spring Fair had great success but wouldn't have gone ahead if it wasn't for the wonderful volunteers who give hours of their time to help us out”. Total funds raised were Book Fair $6000, Spring Fair $4500, and White Elephant $4000. “The money goes some way in paying our vicar and running the parish,” says Helena. “Of course, we always need more

and appreciate any donations we receive. Thank you to everyone to has donated either their time or goods.” “Everything is always much appreciated. As a thank you to all our volunteers there was an

afternoon tea held on Sunday at Trinity Church. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and for those who missed it or couldn't attend we hope you are aware of our gratitude.”

HELP PROTECT AND GROW OUR NATURAL HERITAGE Selwyn residents are being asked to help grow a strategy to protect our unique natural heritage. The Selwyn District Council has released its first proposed Selwyn Biodiversity Strategy for residents to view and give their feedback on. The strategy is open for consultation until Friday 15 December. Indigenous biodiversity describes everything living on land, in fresh water, the sea and the variety of life of our flora and fauna. In Waikirikiri Selwyn, we have a unique mix of biodiversity that is native to Aotearoa New Zealand. The draft strategy sets a proposal for how the Council intends to achieve the protection, maintenance, and restoration of indigenous biodiversity within Selwyn starting with protecting what remains and then restoring what has been lost, with associated goals and actions to do that. It is Selwyn’s first biodiversity strategy and an important opportunity for Selwyn

residents to help care for, restore, and grow what we have, Council Executive Director Development and Growth Tim Harris says. “Aotearoa New Zealand is a special place with unique plants and animals and in Waikirikiri Selwyn we have our own unique collection of biodiversity that isn’t found anywhere else in the world. Selwyn residents have told us that looking after our environment is very important and this strategy is a chance to lay out how that can happen. Particularly to give your feedback on the goals we’ve set and the actions we’re proposing to take to protect and enhance our biodiversity.” There are significant challenges and opportunities ahead to protect, maintain and restore a range of healthy ecosystems stretching from the mountains to the sea. We encourage people to get involved and give their feedback to help inform and grow the strategy.”

People can view the strategy and give their feedback to help grow the strategy at: yoursay.selwyn.govt.nz/ biodiversity or at the Council Rolleston offices or any of our Selwyn libraries and service centres. Submissions can also be made by email to: yoursay@selwyn.govt.nz. Drop in days will also be held where our biodiversity team will be available to discuss the strategy and answer questions on: • 13 December 3-7pm Darfield Library • 14 December 3-7pm Council Rolleston Offices • 15 December 3-7pm Leeston Library. The consultation is open until 7pm Friday 15 December.

The Darfield High School Year 10 Boys team came second in the Intermediate Section. Josh Tuer, Dustin Rowlands (with his Canterbury Region Gumboot Throwing Trophy), Jade McKay and Lucas Meyer. More than 300 students from eleven schools across the region, from Timaru to Hanmer Springs, participated in a series of engaging and educational modules in Agri Futures Clash of the Colleges, at the NZ Ag Show at Christchurch last week. These modules, supported by industry and training organisations coordinated by Agri Futures, provided practical experiences in various aspects of the food and fibre sector, including aquaculture, forestry, dairy, sheep and beef, and practical on-farm skills. Darfield High School (DHS) entered two Year 7 & 8 teams and three Year 9 & 10 teams. Daniel O'Regan, General Manager of Agri Futures, says, "The enthusiasm and skill displayed by the students were incredible. It's clear that the future of New Zealand's agriculture is bright with such

talented young individuals coming up". The event, supported by regional partner CRV, saw the introduction of the intermediate category - which saw second place going to one of the DHS Year 10 Boys teams. Across the day, students competed in over sixteen modules of various activities, from tree identification, tyre changing, mussel buoy knot

tying, ear tagging to gumboot throwing and wool fadge races, demonstrating both their knowledge and physical prowess. Maggie Bull competed in a Year 7 & 7 Girls team and individually won the Gumboot Throwing competition in the Girls Junior Challenge section. Dustin Rowlands won the overall Canterbury Region Gumboot Trophy for 2023 with a throw of 27 metres.

Ken Hall, a Christchurch Art Gallery curator, was the Malvern U3A November speaker. Ken, whose area of interest at the Gallery, is historical art, is instrumental in the research and provenance of items in the collection and the history, and sometimes mystery, of how the objects came to be in the gallery’s ownership. The current exhibition at the Christchurch Art Gallery is OUT OF TIME, which runs until April 24 next year. The items of art and artifacts are from the Gallery’s historical collection and cover a span of four thousand years from ancient stone carvings to painted and printed art in a range of media. Ken’s beautiful slides of early Egyptian carved panels and Greek vases through to medieval illuminated manuscripts on vellum to

tapestry works from the seventeen hundreds, a silver coffee pot and porringer made in the United Kingdom, and a copper engraving of a work entitled, Head of a New Zealander dating back to 1773, are examples from this exhibition. Also highlighted was the exquisite folio of paintings, which is on loan to the gallery, depicting watercolours of Indian birds. There are twentyfive pictures in the album and three small lithographs. These paintings were produced by Elizabeth Jane D’Oyly and her husband, Charles D’Oyly, reputedly the best amateur painters of Indian art. There are many lithographs and paintings also in the exhibition, an experience not to be missed. We are most grateful to Ken for his insight into the history of all these interesting artworks and the

stories that they tell. Our December meeting will be the first Friday of December, with our U3A member Jim Patrick talking about his childhood in Bolivia. Being the festive season members will enjoy a Christmas morning tea.

Dame Lynda Topp is getting behind a new Fish & Game campaign encouraging Kiwis to take up freshwater fishing and hunting. The Rewild campaign, launched in Christchurch by Fish & Game New Zealand chief executive Corina Jordan, alongside keen angler, and hunter Dame Lynda Topp, highlights the many benefits of fishing and hunting, including environmental stewardship and conservation, food-gathering and improving mental health and wellbeing. The campaign, which will feature stories, social media content, billboards, and advertising across the country, will include events and resources to support people wanting to have a go at fishing and hunting. Last year approximately 120,000 people purchased fishing and hunting licences from Fish & Game. “We created the Rewild campaign to share our passion with New Zealanders and encourage them to get out in nature and enjoy the benefits nature and wild spaces provide,” says Jordan. “We want Kiwis to 'rewild' themselves by connecting with the natural world and all the benefits it offers. Fishing and hunting are great for physical and mental wellbeing, you

can’t focus on problems when you are focussed on a trout at the end of your line.” Fishing and hunting are also great ways to connect with whānau and friends, to teach children skills, instil a desire to protect the environment and help them learn independence. Women are also increasingly getting out and having a go, and my experience is that it’s liberating. It’s time to yourself, but it also means you can brin g back someth in g

delicious and healthy for dinner. Dame Lynda Topp, an angler and hunter since childhood, is supporting the campaign and encouraging Kiwis to rewild themselves. “All Kiwis should have a chance to get out and connect with nature and have the chance to come together with whānau and friends to shake off their worries, have some fun, catch some kai and connect with what it means to be part of Aotearoa.”

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB NEWS The Malvern Rifle Club hosted the Annual Canterbury Spring Championships on November 18-19. Thirty-one shooters from throughout the South Island with one from Auckland gathered to participate in the seven rounds of shooting over the two days of competition. There were three grades of Target Rifle Competition (A B C), FTR, and F-Open classes. Saturday's programme was ten counting shots at 300, 800, 900 and 900 yards, with Sunday having three rounds at 500, 600 and 600 yards. The weather over the weekend was better than had been forecast in the week preceding the competition. Saturday was fine, sunny, and cool, with Sunday hotter and sunnier, though a southerly change arrived after prizegiving. Some excellent shooting was seen over the weekend. Andre and Johan du Toit both shot three 50s (in TR-A) in Saturday's four rounds of competition but finished the day in second and third place

respectively with John Snowden leading TR-A with two 50s and two 49s for a day one total of 198.16 (from the maximum 200.20). Many other shooters also shot two possibles during the first day. Mike Chui (F-Open) showed his prowess at the final 900 yards shooting with an excellent 60.06 in a speedy two minutes 41 seconds from the allowed 16 minutes. His scores were challenged to keep up with his shooting. Andre and Mike both shot clear on Sunday with three possibles (50s and 60s respectively) in the three rounds of shooting. Andre only dropped three points for the weekend on his way to winning the Target Rifle Championship Belt. Mike won the F-Open Championship Belt and Matthew McCallum-Clarke won the FTR Championship Belt. RESILIENT ECONOMY SHOWS IMPRESSIVE GROWTH Selwyn remains one of the fastest growing economies in the country, new economic figures show. Latest figures from economic analysts Infometrics shows Selwyn's economy grew by 3.5% GDP over the year to September 2023, making it the third fastest growing territorial authority. The figures show Selwyn's economy stands resilient, supported by robust employment and consumer spending. A 5.9% growth in employment of Selwyn residents over the year to September underlined the growing diversity of the Selwyn economy with growth in every industry except agriculture. This employment surge is underpinned by strong population growth, estimated at 5.2% in the year to June 2023 by Stats NZ. Consumer spending in Selwyn has seen an impressive increase, with a 12.4% growth over the year to September 2023. This growth accelerated to 15% in the September 2023 quarter, highlighting the district's robust

economic health. Rising prices and a burgeoning population are identified as key drivers behind the consumer spending growth. This trend not only points to economic prosperity but also signifies a high level of consumer confidence within the district. While house values in Selwyn experienced a moderate decline, sales volumes were up by 9.1% over the year to September 2023, compared to the 7.6% fall observed in Canterbury and 13.7% fall nationally during the same period. There are indications of a slowdown in investment in new houses. In the September quarter, only 291 new dwellings were consented in Selwyn, marking the district's lowest figure since 2019. This trend aligns with broader challenges faced by the residential construction sector, including rising build costs and high interest rates. The continued growth in the economy even during a slowdown

in construction highlights a shift towards a more diversified economy with, less reliance on construction. Mayor Sam Broughton expressed optimism about Selwyn's economic trajectory, "Our community's resilience and adaptability are evident in these figures. We remain committed to fostering a vibrant economy that not only grows but does so sustainably, creating opportunities for our residents and businesses alike and supports strengthening our community."

DARFIELD BASED

A 60 year old millionaire is ge ng married and throws a big wedding recep on. His friends are quite jealous and in a quiet moment one of them asks him how did he land such a hot 23 year old beauty? “Simple,” grins the millionaire, “I faked my age." His friends are really amazed and ask him how much he said. "Well", he replied. "I said I was 87!"
