This year marked the 125th show, which the committee celebrated in good country style.

Initial exhibitor and competitor numbers were low and slow but with an extension to the entry deadline and extra publicity, we were able to bring these to above or similar to previous years. We were very lucky to have Deb Abraham running our publicity and Facebook page, which helped promote us the whole way through and saw an increased participation in most sections including children’s entries.

Show morning started with dense fog for all early birds and added another twist to the task of the She&ield Tennis Club, who again did a sterling job of gate entry.

The fog burnt o& as the show awakened and the general public started rolling through the gate. The day turned into a magical climate with little breeze bringing gate numbers to the highest we have had for many years.

The crowd was treated to a happy, family-friendly atmosphere with smiles across the board and lots to see and do — testament to the hard work of the committee — and the quality stall holders were also great to see.

The hospitality tent this year was conducted by Bill and Michelle — they had the daunting task of matching up to the benchmark, which Helen and Keith Taege had set in previous years. Helen, how did you do it?

This year’s show theme was Innovation and Education in the rural sector, which saw a massive increase in trade exhibitors, who all contributed to the atmosphere and were a real treat to young and old.

MELANGE – A MIX OF CREATIVE

Melange - a varied mixture of medium, style and creative talents at Te Huanui for the month of April. Melange features the work of Claire Robertshaw, Donna Coster, Diana Nicholson-Plank, Sayoko Pettigrew and Hadani Woodruff and opens from 6:00pm Thursday, March 28 and runs until Wednesday, April 24.

Claire Robertshaw’s work is centered around a modern and evolving understanding of spirituality and femininity.

Claire’s work is unapologetically feminine and full of vibrant colour and symbolism, with an aesthetic influenced by kitsch and nostalgia.

Diana Nicholson-Plank works in mixed media, acrylic and oils, painting in a world where surrealism and expressionism had a baby. Diana allows her subconscious and sense of fun to run free, resulting in unique and evocative works.

Sayoko Pettigrew is a Japanese born NZ Resident painter and ceramic artist based in rural Selwyn. Sayoko’s ceramic works are inspired by a Japanese flower arranging tool “Kenzan”. Sayoko started by making flower frogs before

spreading to her distinctively styled sculptures.

Donna Coster is a self-taught artist, whose art journey began in 2019. Donna paints mostly in acrylics and loves to capture the many moods of nature, focussing on the changes in weather, light, and seasons. The New Zealand landscape is a constant source of inspiration for Donna, who is not often without camera in hand sourcing her reference images.

Hadani is a self-taught artist who paints moody, ethereal oil landscapes inspired by her adventures in the outback of Aotearoa/New Zealand. 'When someone views one of my paintings, I want them to tune out from the busy world around them, to be lost in their thoughts and to feel as though they are physically

immersed in the scene'.

Hadani works for Ōtautahi Creative Spaces supporting artists who have experienced mental distress and trauma. She believes creativity is an important tool for mental health and wellbeing and feels everybody has creative talent inside them.

4WD FUNDRAISER

The Malvern Anglican Parish is pleased to offer a four-wheel drive trip on Mt Torlesse Station on April 14, 2024.

It will be a fun day and a chance for locals and people from further afield to bring their vehicles along and enjoy some spectacular scenery, test their skills, and meet likeminded people.

Proceeds from the fundraising trip will help with supporting ongoing ministry for Malvern Anglican Parish.

Registrations will be from 9 am and leaving the yard at 10 am. There will be signage from Pococks Road, Springfield. The trip will take approximately four hours with stops along the way and for lunch. Lunch will be a BYO picnic. During the lunch break, Rev. Tom Innes will conduct a short and

relaxed service for those who would like to attend. Autumn is a beautiful time of year to be out in Selwyn, so hopes are high for a great day at Mount Torlesse Station.

Speaking on behalf of the Malvern Anglican Parish, Graeme Dawson says, “The day has been made possible through the generosity and support of the Johnson family and farm management team.

We are extremely grateful for that.”

The cost is $50 per vehicle, which is reasonable for spectacular scenery not normally available to public vehicles. Please note that dogs are strictly not allowed as this is a working farm.

SILVER MEDAL FOR LOCAL HONEY

Local business Coalgate Honey Co has just won a silver medal for its Beech Honey Dew at the 2024 Outstanding Food Producer Awards.

Of Coalgate Honey Co’s Beech Honey Dew, judges said, “An interesting honey that had the judges mulling over true 'pastoral' aroma, mellowing to give a more subtle flavour. Great texture.”

Over 250 New Zealand-made food and non-alcoholic drinks were recognised for their quality, receiving medals in the 2024 Outstanding Food Producer Awards.

NZ food industry legend and Awards Head Judge, Lauraine Jacobs who led 23 judges assessing the products said, “Medals are a morale boost for producers affirming their hard work, while they give consumers a guide to locally

made products that they can purchase with confidence.”

The medal tally was 137 Gold; 76 silver and 48 bronze from a remarkable 355 entries from 122 Kiwi food and drink producers, which were judged at Auckland’s Homeland restaurant last month.

Coalgate Honey Co. owners Simon and Sarah Aarts say, "We decided to put our Beech Honey Dew to the test by submitting it for the 2023 Outstanding Food Producers Awards. Despite not having received any awards previously, we took a chance, and to our delight, the judges awarded us a silver medal.”

“This medal affirms all of our hard work and dedication to producing quality honeys,” says Simon, “and adds another feather to the cap of our collection of award-

winning honeys from past competitions.”

The proud couple says the win is a real boost to their honey business. “Especially coming off the heels of a rather average honeyseason.”

Simon adds, “A special mention must go to Andy and Janeen Keating of Wakaepa Farm, the source of our exceptional Beech Honey. Our collaboration with them on sustainability played a pivotal role in this outstanding achievement."

OUTSTANDING RESULTS

TM Dance World is understandably proud of its students’ achievements. The dance studio held its annual Asia Pacific Dance Association (APDA) dance examinations in term three, 2023 and had its highest number of students take up this opportunity with over 140 entries. The examinations ran over four days at the Darfield and Oxford studios.

TM Dance World students presented outstanding results in the 2023 season with 22 exam passes with honours with distinction 96% and above, and 92 honours results 86% and above.

The APDA is a worldwide dance curriculum. Hundreds of dance studios teach these syllabi in Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Contemporary Tap andMusical Theatre.

In February, APDA announced its top marks and top tier awards for 2023, recognizing the highest achievers internationally. TM Dance World proudly celebrated this recognition bestowed upon two of its own. Georgie Prosser with her second flawless performance received a Top Mark in Level 8 Contemporary, earning a perfect score of 100%. Additionally, Georgie demonstrated her excellence by achieving honours with

distinction in her Jazz Intermediate 3 exam, with an impressive score of 97%.

Millie McDury was awarded Top Mark for her Level 3 Musical Theatre, achieving an outstanding score of 99%. Furthermore, Millie's exceptional talent shone through as she also received a score of 98.5% and earned a Top Tier award for her Level 4 Hip Hop.

If this wasn't enough Millie also excelled in her Contemporary Level 4 exam, achieving honours with

distinction with an impressive score of 96%.

As a testament to their remarkable achievements and dedication to dance both Georgie and Millie have been awarded scholarships for their 2024 entryinto APDAexams.

TM Dance World owner and operator Tara McKeown says, “We are so very proud of both the girls and would like to congratulate them on such high achievements. We can’t wait to see what they do this year.”

LOCAL DOG TRIALS IN APRIL

Recently members of the Malvern Collie Club met at ‘Springvale’, 482 Springfield Road for a working bee to prepare for the 114th annual dog trials being held on April 5 and 6.

The Malvern Collie Club has held their dog trials at ‘Springvale’ since 1958. The property, owned by David Duncan and Edward and Jenna Harrington, the lessees of ‘Springvale’, will provide the sheep for the trials.

Entries for the 114th trials are taken on the day and the events spread over two days.

Malvern Collie Club secretary Ali Price says they won’t know entry numbers until the day but adds they expect around 80 to 90 competitors with the majority having more than one dog competing.

“We would expect about 70 entries in each of the heading classes and about 50 entries in each of the huntaway

classes,” says Ali.

The club awards 26 trophies annually, which include cups for the winner of each class as well as trophies for district and maiden competitors. A special trophy awarded is the Dave Stokes Memorial Cup. The current holders of the cup are Kerryand Liz Pauling.

“It’s a new cup that will be

awarded for the second time and is awarded to a local person for outstanding contribution or achievement,” says Ali.

Visitors are welcome to come and watch the trials. “If they want to see all four events happening, they should come late morning or after lunch.”

During a recent working bee, Malvern Collie Club members carried out work on all four courses – Long Pull, Short Head and yard, Zig Zag Hunt and Straight Hunt that would be used for the trials and ensured the kitchen, bar and secretary’s office were readyfor their upcoming 114th annual dog trials.

STILL GOING STRONG

The West Melton Rugby Club is celebrating 50 years since the club started in 1974 with just three teams.

The Club celebrations run over three days from May 10 -12, 2024 and include a catch up on Friday night with a special presentation to new life members, a formal dinner and dance at the West Melton Community Centre on Saturday night, and a golden oldies game on Sunday with a 1pm kick-off.

Spokesperson Marilyn Barnes says, “We are honoured to have Sir GrahamHenry and Mike Cron, both ex All Black coaches attending the dinner to share with us some of their experiences in the rugby world over the years. A special thanks to the generosity of O'Connell Builders, who

sponsored the travel costs involved.”

Many years of fundraising was undertaken back in the 80's to provide the funds to build the clubrooms in the West Melton Domain. The clubrooms were officially opened in 1985, after many hours of voluntary labour from club members and supporters and are still being used to day with some extensions and improvement.

The club has grown since those early days. “Last season fielded 16 teams in the Ellesmere competition and is likely to have close to 20 teams this season,” says Marilyn.

HEALTHY EATING

Could traditional Easter fare be healthier?

When we are confronted with the arrival of Easter, perhaps the easiest way to celebrate with the family, and what is often expected, is to go out and buy a clutch of chocolate Easter eggs and chocolate Easter bunnies. It is perhaps concerning that we have been gradually seduced by the confectionery industries to see the celebration in this way. It has not always been so dominated by these types of treats.

A traditional Easter meal is ham or roast lamb with all the trimmings. Perhaps symbolizing that Jesus is said to be the lamb of God or maybe it is a reminder of an ancient sacrifice. You could still celebrate this way and by filling everyone up with good quality food, there may be less room available for excess sugar. Find a good slow-cook recipe, add some carrots for the bunny, sweet potato, a rich gravy, yum.

Easter eggs were not always

made of chocolate. By all means enjoy some chocolate eggs in moderation, but perhaps you could supplement and have some great family time by boiling some real eggs and then spending time with your children decorating them. Buy some suitable colouring pens and draw faces and then dress them up in colourful little clothes. Take turns hiding them around the house and seeing who can find Humpty Dumpty, etc. Spending this time with your children is likely to be more valuable than eating too much chocolate and marshmallow. Eggs are a traditional symbol of fertility and when painted red can apparently symbolize the blood of Christ.

You might recall a rhyme that goes “one a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns”. This was from 1733, suggesting that Easter hot cross buns have been around for a very long time. Warm or toast them and spread with real butter, not margarine as we now understand that vegetable oils and margarine are poor choices for your health,

because they increase whole bodyinflammation.

Walking around the show, I was happy to see the young ones clambering over big machinery and the interaction with adults who could view a bit of our past, present and potential future innovations.

The committee decided the trade site section should receive the trophy for Best Show Section this year.

Simon Wright is the trade space convenor and had positive feedback from sites and many voiced they will be back next year with even bigger participation.

The crowd was able to view one of the Calder family’s traction engines, which they kindly drove to the show on the day. Luckily, we’d had just enough moisture over the last couple of weeks and with communication to the correct authorities, they were allowed to travel full steam ahead. The last time they were at the show was our 100th anniversary.

sponsors, our volunteers and our awesome show secretary, Rebecca Stewart (and her family), who keeps us all in line. Thanks Becky. Alistair Barnhill, President 2024 Malvern A&P Show

The show committee was also lucky to help celebrate the 100th year of Taege Engineering in the district, which added to the day. Well done to the Taege family.

Always a crowd entertainer, the horse entries were very good and it was a real treat to see a larger entry number of clydesdales. Dayboo Clydesdale Stud showed these splendid animals up close with a tug of war with the children and also participated in the grand parade.

The local fire brigade put on a well-patronised accident scene display. This was followed by entertainment from the shearers and gift lamb presentation at the bar.

As New Zealanders, we will celebrate Easter in different ways. It is an opportunity to go away as a family, and children always enjoy having Easter eggs. The Easter egg symbolises New Life and for Christians, we celebrate that Jesus has Risen from the dead.

All of us experience the loss of

loss and

tears because we loved them. We look back on their life and are grateful for the person they were and how they impacted our lives. As Christians, we also look forward with hope, for we believe in Eternal Life.

Through Jesus’ suffering and death, all the wrong doings, the sins we are guilty of, have been washed away. In Jesus

having Risen from the dead, we are called to share in his Eternal Life now and after the end of our earthlylife.

May this Easter be a wonderful time for everyone, but may it especially be filled with Hope and Joysince “Jesus is Risen”

CELEBRATING THE CELEBRATING CELEBRATINGTHE THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS RESURRECTION OF JESUS RESURRECTION JESUS RESURRECTION JESUS
Rev. Alexa Evenden, Rev. Alexa Evenden, Rev. Alexa Evenden, Rev. Alexa Evenden, Malvern Anglican Parish. Malvern Anglican Parish. Malvern Anglican Parish. Malvern Anglican Parish.

The best things in life often come out of the worst things.

Easter, not Christmas, has been the most important landmark in the calendar for followers of Jesus for nearly 2,000 years, because it gives such a powerful illustration of what is worst in the world and yet also where the solution lies.

That first Easter saw failure of human justice – Jesus executed because those in authority envied and feared his influence over the people. Their hatred made them

incapable of giving him a hearing or caring for the truth. Theycould accept nothing less than his death. That spirit is still alive and well in the world.

It was the darkest moment in history – with humanity rejecting its creator and all he stood for. Yet it was also the best thing that has happened in history. For that was the way Jesus became the great Rescuer. But only for those with humility and the eyes to see their own reality: that everyone of us needs a rescuer, above all from ourselves, because of our

moral and spiritual powerlessness. That unjust death has brought freedom to countless millions and always will.

Please join us for a short service at The Crosses (Route 72 between Glentunnel and Glenroy) at 8am on Easter Sunday with hot cross buns afterwards at the Glenroy hall before our 10.30 Easter service at Darfield Baptist Church followed by a shared lunch.

Blessings. Blessings.

Darfield Baptist Church. Church.

SUPREME AWARD FOR HIGH COUNTRY STATION

High Peak Station has traditional farm roots, however it has diversified in recent years to include a wide range of income streams enhanced with added value.

The 3,760ha (3,450ha effective) property is managed by an eight-way partnership that runs four different businesses. The partnership is comprised of the Guilds –James, Anna, Hamish, Gemma, Simon and Kate – and Amelia and Tom Dunbar.

The judges noted that strategic planning, spanning multiple generations, has not only enhanced the core business but has also resulted in successful diversification.

There’s a strong focus on adding value to all the enterprises, with the team striving toward high-end products and experiences.

Almost half of High Peak Station’s income is derived from tourism, with the remainder split between sheep, cattle, deer and honey. James and Anna have been at the property since 1973. Their

children Simon, Hamish and Amelia became actively involved in the business 30 years later. Today, the four separate entities all share synergies – enhancing the overall success of the business.

Each family member brings different strengths to the table which has ensured a sustainable and robust business. The judges were particularly impressed with James’s forward-looking approach to regulation, and Hamish’s vast knowledge of the property’s soil, topography and how winter grazing is managed.

Protecting and enhancing the environment is another priority. Natural wetlands, QEII National Trust covenant areas, and riparian corridors are all well protected – creating an environment that is rich with biodiversity.

In awarding the Regional Supreme Award, the judges noted that High Peak Station is one of the most diverse highcountry businesses they have

encountered, with the Guild and Dunbar families being true guardians of the land who champion environmental stewardship and advocate for sustainable farming practices. The Guild and Dunbar families also won the following awards: Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award, Rabobank Agri-Business Management Award, NZFET Biodiversity Award, NZFET Climate Recognition Award and Environment Canterbury Water Quality Award.

READY TO MOVE ON

After 60 years of perfecting her golf swing, 93year-old Margaret Overton has put away her golf clubs and joined a local walking group. Margaret recently retired from Greendale Golf Club and enjoyed a farewell afternoon tea organised bythe Club.

“It was a nice finish to my golfing days,” says Margaret. “The flowers were a lovelysurprise.” Following the afternoon tea Club patron Jim Adams and his wife, Kath, took Margaret and another recently retired golfer, Chrisie Banks, out for a meal at Thirsty Acres in Kirwee. “It finished the dayperfectly”.

Over the years Margaret has found golf a great way to meet new friends and keep fit. She was still able to walk the 18-hole course and says she is “so luckyto have good health.”

During her time with the Club, Margaret enjoyed the competitive aspect of the game and in the 1980s she took her handicap down to eight. Of her game, she says, “You know that you can always playbetter.”

Margaret has seen a lot of changes over the years and says that in the 1990s there were a lot of players and competition was strong. Nowadays, she says, there are not as many women playing 18 holes on Saturdays; more are playing nine hole golf. “Women are working, don’t have the time or can’t afford to play.”

Greendale Golf Club president Steve Roulston says Margaret is “a remarkable woman.” He was recently teamed up with her to play for the Mitchell Cup and together they won the Cup. “She’s spritely and still keeping up with the

men.”

He says at her afternoon tea, Margaret noted three things that stood out for her during her 60 years of playing in the Club. “The first was winning a husband and wife trophy, the second was getting her handicap down to single figures and the third, and one of her greatest thrills and achievements, was winning the Mitchell Cup.”

“Margaret has been very kind and supportive of the Club over the years. After COVID, she helped fund a garden with rhododendrons at the golf course,” says Steve. “We’re disappointed she has resigned but she told me she was ready for a different stage of life and has taken up walking.”

Margaret Overton recentlyenjoyed an afternoon tea to celebrate her retirement from Greendale Golf Club after 60 years on the golf course.

CRICKET RECOGNITION

Rob Frew from Darfield recently won the Dulux Outstanding Contribution and Services to Coaching at the ANZ New Zealand Cricket Awards.

Cricket in Canterbury Country wouldn’t be the same as it is today without the endless hours of coaching Rob Frew has given across all levels of cricket.

Rob began his coaching career in 2002, coaching the Canterbury Country Hawke Cup team for an eleven-year span with Canterbury Country victorious twice during that time.

Towards the back end of this tenure, Rob began a new coaching gig – coach of his sons’ soft-ball cricket team at Darfield Cricket Club. During this time, he ensured the boys he coached came away having developed their skills and an even deeper love for the game.

Rob followed his boys through the age groups and the time commitment for representative coaching was immense. The 2017/18 season saw Rob begin another coaching chapter at St Andrews College with the school’s 1st & 2nd Xl

teams – highlighted by winning the Gillette Cup during the 2019/20 season.

Rob was not only involved in higher levels of the game but also volunteered at Darfield CC’s “Superstar Academy Programme” – now called Smash Play. Rob’s five-year service to this programme helped to excite hundreds of the next generation about cricket.

Rob has taken the reigns as Groundsman at Darfield Cricket Club, ensuring the grounds are one of the best in the competition. Rob lends a hand at training, coaching the Premier & Senior teams - and is still playing for the senior side!

Rob reassumed the role of Canterbury Country Hawke Cup coach and led the team to a Hawke Cup challenge against Hawkes Bay in February 2024.

The final night of Social Bowls was held on Thursday, March 14. Congratulations to the Crackerjacks (Sean Archer, Michael Bickley, Reon Goodwillie and John Wilkinson), who won the competition by just one point over the second placed Westie Rollers. A big thank you to the local community, who continue to support this tournament.

SUMMER NETBALL

Malvern Netball ran a six week Summer Netball competition which was well supported with 14 teams. The Centre would

like to say a big thanks to their sponsors; Grain & Grape and JohnnyFresh Darfield.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

John Charles Pilbrow

We would like to acknowledge the friendship, support and cards over John’s passing on the 18th February 2024.

John and I have lived in Courtenay for 30 years, in that time we have made many lasting friends.

He enjoyed all of your friendships, especially the warm winter days at Coalgate Bowls, and games with the Kirwee and Malvern Bowls players.

The number of folk that attended his funeral was very much appreciated.

Please accept this as our acknowledgement for the respect you all had for John.

A life well lived by a very special person.

It was Grandpa Jones' 100th birthday at Easter and he was still in perfect health. At his birthday party he was asked how he managed to live so long and stay so fit. He explained, "I put my long life down to spending so much time outdoors. I've been in the open air, day after day, rain or shine, for the last 75th years."

"How do you manage to keep up such a rigorous fitness regime?" they asked.

"It's simple," he said. "When I married my wife 75 years ago, we both made a solemn pledge. We agreed that whenever we had a fight, whoever was proved wrong would go outside and take a long walk."
