LOCAL RISING STARS

Two young Malvern sisters, Amelia (12) and Elise (9) Mayberry, are heading towards stardom in the equestrian world. The talented pair have just won placings – Amelia first place and Elise third place – in the Whittaker Equine StablesRisingStarChampionship at the 2024 Archibalds NZ National Jumping & Show HunterChampionship. The event is one of the most prestigious jumping and show hunter shows in New Zealand. Top equestrians from across the countrycompete for highly sought-after national titles over four days at the National Equestrian Centre (NEC) at McLeansIsland,Canterbury.

Mum Narissa Mayberry says both girls were absolutelyover the moon with their wins.

and spray each other with it. Narissa says they were both incredibly proud to have receivedpodiumpositions.

Amelia and Elise attend Bangor Pony Club where they have learned a lot, made new friends and enjoyed all types of competition. They started their competitive journey four years ago beginning with being on a lead rein over poles on the ground and are now jumping their ponies over 60-70cmhighjumps.

“Elise loves games, and they both enjoy attending the local A & P shows, jumping competitions, and one-day events,”saysNarissa.

“They never expected to come away with podium positions. Theyalso loved being coached by top show jump riders –Amelia was mentored by Johanna Wylaars, while Elise was mentored by Grace Percy. Being able to compete in the main oval at the National Equestrian Centre at Mcleans Island was an amazing opportunity that had both girls buzzing.”

Being on the podium together was also a treat for the girls and their family. The girls thought it was hilarious getting to pop the grape juice

At the event, Amelia rode Willowpark Blue Magnate and Elise rode Pablo, however the competition was the girls' last one on their current ponies. They are both moving up to new ponies and the challenges that come with building new partnerships.

“Amelia would love to continue moving through the heights and getting more experience out eventing and competing,” says Narissa. “Elise is all about having a great time with her pony. She likes jumping her pony and riding with her friends. She plans to continue having fun, attending lessons and eventing her pony over winter.”

DHS WELLBEING UPDATE

Rangatahi/Youth tend to struggle more with their wellbeing than other age groups. At Darfield we acknowledge this and hold a range of events like Attitude presentations to help combat it. We recognised the devastating effects the 2019 Mosque Attacks had on our community. For the fifth anniversary, we held a schoolwide minute's silence for those lives who were mercilessly stripped away f rom us. We also released messages encouraging unity, compassion, and support as a reminder for all communities and people that we are better

together, unitedasone. On the topic of releasing messages, our Wellbeing committee has reinstated our Wellbeing Instagram page: @dhs.wellbeing. This page is a hub for all things wellbeing: from notices and upcoming events to support services and uplifting quotes, weencourage all whanau/family as well as the community to follow the page, the more you know about issues plaguing rangatahi, the more you’re able to support/guide them throughit.

With that, the committee has also created a podcast called Wellbeing Warriors found on YouTube under Darfield High School-Wellbeing.

The podcast has three main members, Anna, Tasman, and Jordan, each have had their own unique experiences aroundWellbeing.

Each episode contains a new topic as they detail tips, tricks, advice through telling personal stories, counsellor recommended strategies and techniques as well as hosting guest speakers. Their latest episode is about conquering stage fright, including an appearance from a Year 13 musician.

Upcoming in Term 2 is BullyFree Week, Pink Shirt Day, Mental Health Awareness and PrideWeek.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

We’ve laid out the options, now it’s over to you. That’s the message from Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) Chair Peter Scott, as consultation begins on Council’s 10-year work plan and budget. “Councillors and staff have put a lot of work into these proposals that will shape our LongTerm Plan. We’re now inviting you to tell us what you think.”

People have until 14 April to provide feedback on the consultation document, which presents a range of options, and price tags, for delivering the core services that the Council is responsible for (Environmental Regulation and Protection, Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards, and Public Transport).

“The proposals reflect what we’ve previously heard about your aspirations for things like public transport, response to hazards, and biodiversity protection,” said Scott. “The question is, how much can we afford to do - and what is the price of not doing it?”

Proposals include: Proposals include: include: include:

• Increased investment to improve flood and river resilience, and a new targeted rate for additional flood protection work in the Selwyn district

• Making all core bus routes run to 10-minute frequencies or better by 2028

• Continuing to replace end-of-life diesel buses with new electric buses

• Increased investment to support our planning, consenting and compliance work (the main tools we have to influence environmental outcomes)

• A targeted rate in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula to help improve indigenous biodiversity outcomes

• A fixed fee approach for some consent applications.

“As I’ve previously mentioned, we’re also balancing the ‘must-do’ work with affordability, alongside the impactof inflation and Central Government requirements. This includes using targeted rates – so those who get the benefit are paying the cost,” said Scott. “But many people may still find the proposed rates rise unpalatable. If that’s the case, they need to tell us which services are most

important to them, and which they think could be cut back.”

The preferred $346.3 million work package for the first year (2024/25) would require a 24.2 percent increase in total revenue collected from rates.

Scott reiterated that the impact would vary, depending on a property’s value and the services it received.

“Most ratepayers could expect a rise of somewhere between 13 and 27 percent. The sample properties in the supporting material provide dollar examples of the differing amounts. Have a look, and see how your household might be impacted, or use our interactive rates calculator.”

Scott also wants people to think about the cost of not doing enough.

“For instance, if we don’t act now to upgrade our flood and erosion protection, what price might you pay down the line?”

The consultation period will be followed by hearings on 29-30 April and 2-3 May.

Councillors will deliberate 22-23 May and the final plan will be adopted at the end of June.

Scott urges people to take the time to have their say. “We need to ensure that the decisions we make represent as many of you as possible.”

Selwyn residents asked for Selwyn residents asked for Selwyn residents asked Selwyn residents asked their say on how they are their say on how they are on on represented. represented. represented. represented. Consultation is now open for proposed changes to local representationinSelwyn.

The proposal is part of the Council’s representation review aimed at adapting to the district’s growing population. It will result in changes to electoral ward boundaries and councillor allocations to ensure fair and effective representation of communities and their interests ahead of the next localelectionin2025.

Residents will also have the opportunity to propose names forthenewwards. All councils must review their representation arrangements at least every six years.

Selwyn currently has 10 councillors representing four wards, Malvern (2), Ellesmere (2), Rolleston (3) and Springs (3).

Since the last review in 2021, Selwyn’s population has continued to grow rapidly but unevenly across the district. There is now an uneven number of people each

councillor represents, and ward boundaries that are no longerappropriate. “One of the key principles of fair representation is that each elected member should represent around the same number of people,” says MayorSamBroughton. “This review will help to ensure that happens It will also look at our ward boundaries so our residents get fair and equal representation around the Counciltable.”

Residents are invited to provide feedback on proposed wards, the number of councillors representing each ward and if wards should have community boards. Residents can also propose names for thenewwards.

“Our ward names have been around since 1989, when the Selwyn district was created”, Representation Review Committee Chair CouncillorPhilDeansays.

“We are now a different district, with strong heritage, but also an exciting future. This is our chance to come up with names that reflect the

Over the past three years, Greenpeace has held over a dozen free nitrate water testing community events, helping to inform people about the levels of nitrate in their drinkingwater.

The next local testing event will be held at Darfield Baptist Church on Friday, April 19 between10amand4pm.

Theyare particularlyinterested in household bore water supplies, but will test all

drinking water, including publicsupplies.

No one should have to wonder if the water from their kitchen tap could be making them or their family sick. A growing body of scientific evidence has found links between nitrate contamination of water and a host of potential health impacts, from bowel cancer to premature births. New Zealand scientists warn that rural people are the most likely to

be exposed to hazardous levelsofnitrate.

Time and again, people agree with the principle that access to safe drinking water is a basichumanright.

All you need to bring is a sample of your tap water, and they can test it for nitrate contamination while you wait. Run your kitchen tap for one minute and fill a clean container with 200mls of water.

SAFER SPEEDS ONE STEP CLOSER

Safer speeds around Selwyn schools and high-risk intersections are one step closer this week, after Selwyn District Councillors moved to approve an Interim Speed ManagementPlan.

The Plan is aimed at introducing a variable 30km/h speed limit around schools, during peak times when children are arriving and leaving school, as well as reducing approaching speeds to dangerous intersections acrossthedistrict.

The Plan is a proactive approach by the Council to

prioritise community safety while it waits for further clarification from the Minister of Transport on the amendment to speed limit rules.

Following consultation from the community in October 2023, the Council’s Full Speed Management Plan on districtwide speed reductions as part of the previous Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ road safety strategy, was placed on hold pending further direction from the Minister. However, the Council’s Executive Director of Infrastructure and Property,

AnInterimSpeedManagementPlanhasbeenapprovedto providesaferspeedsaroundSelwynschoolsandhigh-risk intersections.

Tim Mason says the Council has followed advice from the ministry around producing an interim plan as safety at these criticallocationscannotwait.

“Our district continues to grow, there are more people on our roads, and we want to ensureeveryone getstowhere they’re going safely. While speed isn't the only cause of accidents, it does determine the severity of outcomes. There is an urgent need to lower speeds around our schools and high-risk intersections and we don’t want to wait until someone is killed or injured before we takeaction”.

The variable speed limits proposed around schools is in line with current indications from the Minister on the what the new rule will include and will be implemented using electronic and static speed signage.

Currently the Council has funding of $1.2 million available from NZTA Waka Kotahi for use towards slower speeds around schools which needs to be used by June 2024.The Plan will now be submitted to NZTA Waka Kotahi for approval with the aim to begin work rolling it out beforetheendofJune2024.

PREMIER CRICKET FINAL

Darfield failed in their attempt to secure the Fulton-Wright Cup after a disappointing loss to Weedons in the final at MainPower Oval in Rangiora on Saturday,March23.

Weedons won the toss and elected to bat immediatelyand produced a very slow and timid start until Harray Passanger came to the crease and began hitting boundaries, while those around him collected singles.Darfield bowling was tight and never allowed any Weedons’ batters togetbeyondastart.

Jeremy Benton entered just before drinks with each of the top Darfield bowlers having secured a wicket.Benton went on a running between the wickets masterclass and snatched runs where there should have been none, at times leaving Darfield's fielderssurprised.

A couple of dropped catches, admittedly difficult ones, could have had the innings close earlier but, as it was, the Weedons’ tail didn't wag as they looked to hit out near the end as Robbie Foulkes and Ryan Hughes wrapped things upfor192.

The chase started well until the total reached 24 when Robbie Foulkes was caught and bowled by Charlie Robson.A reaction catch that got the fielding side fizzing. Each following partnership made it to double figures or so before another batter was dismissed, and this trend continued until the last wicket which made 23 runs. The Weedons' bowling

was simply too accurate to allow for any Darfield batter to put pressure back on and their catchingwas perfect.

Sadly, for Darfield, they were dismissed in 37.2 overs for 124 runs, 68 short of the target.

A man in Miami calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing. Forty-five years of misery is enough."

"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old man says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her," and he hangs up. FranFc, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone, "Like heck they're geGng divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this." She calls her father immediately and screams at the old man, "You are NOT geGng divorced! Don't do a single thing unFl I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. UnFl then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Honey,” he says, "The kids are coming for a visit and paying their own airfares this Fme."
