The flute-like song of the Wood Thrush rings throughout the deciduous forests in summer. His cinnamon brown back is good camouflage as he scrabbles for insects in the forest leaf litter. Hello Fellow Opera Goers, Welcome to this, the final mainstage production of our 2016-17 season. Be sure to mark your calendar to join more than 14,000 friends for Opera in the Park, held on July 22 in Garner Park. This free concert is our annual expression of gratitude for the support we enjoy from the greater Madison community. I thought you might be interested in a few of the many things that go into bringing an opera to the stage at Madison Opera. Our productions are uniquely ours, with hundreds of decisions made every step of the way. Planning for the season begins about two years in advance. The performance dates are negotiated with Overture Center first before the opera themselves are selected from thousands of possibilities. Choosing the opera involves both artistic judgement and financial judgement. Both the merits of the opera and the cost of the production must be considered (for example, as a general rule, the more costumes, the more expensive the opera). As we rent the physical scenery for most of our productions, whether a set exists already for a particular opera is something else we must take into consideration. Next comes selecting the cast and production team (stage director, designers) for each opera. Casting decisions are made based on auditions, past performances for Madison Opera, and performances at other companies. Major roles are cast 18 months in advance, with smaller roles filled about a year in advance. Once the opera, production team, and singers are fixed, attention turns to education and engagement activities. These include community previews, the Opera Novice series, Opera Up Close, our Student Matinee, activities with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and many other events, such as films at Cinematheque. Rehearsals begin about three weeks before opening night, as all of these elements come together rapidly in the Margaret C. Winston Madison Opera Center. With its multiple rehearsal spaces, kitchen, and laundry facilities (important for artists who stay at the Concourse Hotel), the Opera Center is home base for every opera. All of this work is performed by a dedicated small full-time staff and hundreds of professional artists and technical personnel who work on each opera, bringing us a fabulous musical and theatrical experience. As audience members, we get to appreciate their work, and I hope you will enjoy it as the curtain goes up on today’s performance of The Magic Flute!

Dear Friends, “Give Mozart a fairy tale and he effortlessly creates an immortal masterpiece.” – Camille Saint-Saëns The Magic Flute premiered on September 30, 1791; two months later, Mozart died. He was only 35 years old, but the legacy he left was extraordinary – over 600 pieces of music, including this fairy tale of an opera. While Flute was a hit from its first performance, its early history was varied. In the 19th century, productions rewrote freely, interpolating music from other operas and changing the story; the 1865 French version La Flûte Enchantée is barely recognizable in its plot. It was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1900, when it was sung in Italian and included live animals. One of the reasons given for Flute’s relatively few musically-complete performances was that the music was too difficult for “modern” singers; reviews in the early 1900s made a point of this. What a difference time makes! The Magic Flute is now a staple of all opera companies and is practically the operatic equivalent of going to college: almost every professional opera singer has sung in Flute at some point in their lives, often in multiple roles. Mozart is a team sport, and I am incredibly proud of Madison Opera’s team, which is led by Gary Thor Wedow, a celebrated Mozart conductor, and stage director Dan Rigazzi, whose brilliantly imaginative production has been a joy to see come to life. Some artists are Madison Opera debuts; others are returning favorites, including former Studio Artists. Some artists have sung their roles many times before; others are singing their roles for the first time. The six young singers from Madison Youth Choirs who play the Spirits represent our youngest generation of vocal talent. I am delighted to announce our 2017/18 season. We open with Bizet’s Carmen, one of the most popular operas in the world. In February, we offer Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, in what will be Madison Opera’s first production of his virtuoso vocal showcase. We conclude with Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas, which tells of a famous soprano’s voyage down the Amazon River in the early 1900s. Since its 1996 premiere, Florencia has been widely acclaimed and produced, and I look forward to sharing it here. I hope you will consider subscribing to the full season, and join us for all three amazing operas. Thank you for being here in Mozart’s magical world this weekend. THE STORY OF THE OPERA A mythical land between the sun and the moon. Three ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night save Prince Tamino from a dragon. When they leave to tell the queen, the bird catcher Papageno appears. He boasts to Tamino that it was he who killed the creature. The ladies return to give Tamino a portrait of the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, who they say has been kidnapped by the evil Sarastro. Tamino immediately falls in love with Pamina’s picture. The Queen appears, tells Tamino about the loss of her daughter, and commands him to rescue her. The ladies give a magic flute to Tamino and a set of bells to Papageno to ensure their safety on the journey, and appoint three spirits to guide them. Sarastro’s servant Monostatos pursues Pamina but is frightened away by Papageno. The bird catcher tells Pamina that Tamino loves her and is on his way to save her. Led by the three spirits to the temple of Sarastro, Tamino is told by a priest that it is the Queen, not Sarastro, who is evil. Hearing that Pamina is safe, Tamino charms the wild animals with his flute, then rushes off to follow the sound of Papageno’s pipes. Monostatos and his men chase Papageno and Pamina, but are left helpless when Papageno plays his magic bells. Sarastro enters in great ceremony. He punishes Monostatos and promises Pamina that he will eventually set her free. Pamina and Tamino meet for the first time, before Tamino and Papageno are led into the temple. Intermission Sarastro tells the priests that Tamino will undergo initiation rites. Tamino and Papageno begin these rites, and are told by the priests that they must remain silent, a vow Papageno immediately breaks. Monostatos tries to kiss the sleeping Pamina, but is surprised by the appearance of the Queen of the Night. The Queen gives her daughter a dagger and orders her to kill Sarastro. Sarastro finds the desperate Pamina and consoles her, explaining that he is not interested in vengeance. Papageno accepts a glass of water from a flirtatious old lady; when he asks her name, she vanishes. The three spirits appear and remind Tamino and Papageno to be quiet. Tamino remains silent even when Pamina appears; believing he has rejected her, she is heartbroken.

The priests inform Tamino that he has two more trials to complete his initiation. Papageno, who has given up on entering the brotherhood, longs for a wife instead. He eventually settles for the old lady. When he promises to be faithful, she turns into a beautiful young Papagena, but immediately disappears. Pamina tries to kill herself with her mother’s dagger, but is stopped by the three spirits, who tell her that Tamino loves her, and take her to him. Pamina and Tamino face the ordeals of water and fire together, protected by the magic flute. Papageno tries to hang himself, but is saved by the three spirits, who remind him to use his magic bells. When he plays them, Papagena appears and the two start making family plans. The Queen of the Night, her ladies, and Monostatos attack the temple but are defeated and banished. Sarastro blesses Pamina and Tamino as all join in hailing the triumph of courage, virtue, and wisdom. ~Courtesy of The Metropolitan Opera

In Memoriam
Rosemary Johnson
September 7, 1928 – March 13, 2017 Rosemary Johnson first became involved with Madison Opera as a volunteer setbuilder in the early 1970s. Over the next four decades, she became an invaluable and indefatigable member of the Opera, as both a volunteer and a supporter. She was the head of the props crew for many years; she retired from that position in 2001, but continued to work backstage until 2014. She helped out stage management in rehearsals, assisted artists at Opera in the Park, and was known for her razor-sharp brain, which remembered every detail of every production. Her calm smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by everyone in the Madison Opera family.

Cultivating a comprehensive music education philosophy that inspires self-confidence, personal responsibility, and a spirit of inquiry leading students to become “expert noticers,” MYC creates accessible, meaningful opportunities for youth to thrive in the arts and beyond.
