Spain, 19th century. Ottoman Empire, 17th century. South America, early 20th century. The operas in Madison Opera’s 2017/18 season travel around the globe. They are populated by equally varied characters: soldiers and journalists; artists and gardeners; servants and nobility. Some characters will live happily-ever-after; others will meet tragic fates. Central to each opera is the nature of human relationships. The person who seems to be an enemy might turn out to be a friend. A lover is perfectly devoted one day, unfaithful the next. And a quarrel might resolve itself in time for the curtain call. Opera’s universal emotions transcend these boundaries of time, country, and language, with music that unites us all. Please join us to celebrate and share our humanity with a season of glorious operatic performances.

Seville, 1820. A gypsy is determined to live life on her own terms – whatever her fate may be. From its scandalous 1875 premiere in Paris to its current position as one of the most popular operas in the world, Carmen has enthralled generation after generation. Bizet’s masterpiece blends passion, seduction, jealousy, dance, and even a little law-breaking, all set to one of the most famous scores ever composed.

Ottoman Empire, 17th century. A Spanish nobleman arrives at a pasha’s palace to rescue his fiancée, who was captured during a shipwreck. Together they discover that different cultures need not always clash, and romantic longing comes in many forms. Mozart’s first major success, written when he was 26 years old, The Abduction from the Seraglio is full of virtuoso music, with spectacular arias for every character.

Come Aboard a Magical Mystery River Cruise Colombia, early 1900s. Florencia Grimaldi, a famous opera singer, embarks anonymously on a voyage down the Amazon River, hoping to be reunited with the lover she left behind. On the boat with her are a young journalist; a couple feeling the strain of their long marriage; the boat’s captain; the captain’s nephew, who falls in love with the journalist; and a man who is a rather mystical presence. Inspired by the writings of Gabriel García Márquez, Catán’s gorgeously lyrical opera was the first Spanishlanguage opera to premiere in the U.S. and has been performed worldwide since its 1996 premiere.

Join Madison Opera on this truly enchanting journey.

MADISON OPERA I N T H E CO M M U N I T Y In addition to presenting extraordinary opera at the Overture Center for the Arts and at Opera in the Park, Madison Opera is active throughout the community. Here are a few highlights of our engagement programs for adults and youth. S T U D E N T M AT I N E E S For over four decades, middle school and high schools students from around our region have attended fully-staged opera performances. This season, students will enjoy a matinee of Carmen, thanks to the subsidies provided by our generous supporters. THE HIGH SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP PROGR AM Each season, over a dozen high school students are chosen as apprentices. They attend rehearsals, participate in workshops and masterclasses, have dinner with leading artists, and much more. Former Madison Opera High School Apprentices can be seen onstage in many of our operas.

A NIGHT AT THE OPER A WITH BIG BROTHERS / BIG SISTERS Every year, a group of “Bigs” and “Littles” are treated to a private rehearsal, with a pizza party beforehand and a visit with one of our leading artists. A N G E L S AT T H E O P E R A Madison Opera partners with nonprofit organizations such as Agrace Hospice and Access Community Health to provide complimentary tickets to our productions for their dedicated staff and volunteers. CO M M U N I T Y P R E V I E W S Free previews are held during the year in public libraries and retirement communities around our region, bringing the opera up close and personal to our neighborhoods.

For more information on any of these programs, please contact us at info@madisonopera.org

WE CAN’ T DO IT W I T H O U T YO U The dazzling art form that is opera requires considerable support, and Madison Opera relies upon our friends to help us bring these productions and programs to life. Ticket sales pay for only a third of the cost of producing opera and all of the community engagement programs that surround it. Please consider becoming a partner in everything we do on and off stage by adding a gift to your subscription. We’ll provide an array of benefits – from backstage tours to rehearsals, parking passes, cast parties, and more – and everyone from the 14 year-old attending her first opera to the senior citizen relaxing at Opera in the Park will join us in saying “thank you.”
