Romeo meets Juliet in a crowded ballroom, setting in motion a chain of events that will change both their families. Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers comes to the stage of Overture Hall in its most famous operatic setting. Music is my soul. New York City, 1955. As his body lies unclaimed in the morgue, saxophone great Charlie Parker returns in spirit to the jazz club Birdland, determined to compose a final masterpiece. Family and friends blend in and out of his memories in an acclaimed new opera that tells of his tortured, brilliant life “with a pulsing, jazz-infused score” (The New York Times). Charlie Parker’s Yardbird was widely praised following its 2015 premiere. The Wall Street Journal said, “its rhythms snap and swing, its melodies – including real arias – seize the ear, its ensembles crackle with energy.” Madison Opera will be only the second company to perform this theatrical tour de force that melds jazz and opera – don’t miss it!

MADISON OPERA IN THE CO M M U N I T Y In addition to presenting extraordinary opera at the Overture Center for the Arts and at Opera in the Park, Madison Opera is active throughout the community. Here are a few highlights of our engagement programs for adults and youth.
S T U D E N T M AT I N E E S For over four decades, middle school and high schools students from around our region have attended fully-staged opera performances. This season, students will enjoy a matinee of The Magic Flute, thanks to the subsidies provided by our generous supporters. THE HIGH SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP PROGR AM Each year, a dozen high school students are chosen as apprentices. Throughout the year, they attend rehearsals, participate in workshops and masterclasses, have dinner with leading artists, and much more. Former Madison Opera High School Apprentices can be seen onstage in many of our operas. A NIGHT AT THE OPER A WITH BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS Every year, a group of “Bigs” and “Littles” are treated to a private rehearsal, with a pizza party beforehand and a visit with one of our leading artists. A N G E L S AT T H E O P E R A Madison Opera partners with non-profit organizations such as Agrace Hospice and Access Community Health to provide complimentary tickets to our productions for their dedicated staff and volunteers. CO M M U N I T Y P R E V I E W S Free previews are held during the year in public libraries and retirement communities around our region, bringing the opera up close and personal to our neighborhoods.

Ticket sales pay for only a third of the cost of producing opera and all of the community engagement programs that surround it. Renewals must be received by June 15, 2016 to reserve the same seats as the 2015/16 season. After that, seats may be released to new subscribers. Tickets are non-refundable. Subscribers may exchange tickets for an alternate performance of the same opera up to 48 hours in advance through the Madison Opera office, subject to availability. Tickets may also be donated back to Madison Opera for a tax-deduction, for which you will receive a receipt from the Opera. All sales are final. No refunds or credits will be issued. All casts subject to change.
