~Dottie Burroughs, “Dean Dot”

Welcome!

Dear Friends,

2022 was a monumental year for LSM and all of us as we celebrated 40 years of this beloved and transformational program. This year was full of joyous celebrations and innovative achievements, from a growing community to an alumni reunion to connecting virtually around the country.

I invite you to relive your favorite moments from 2022 in these pages and gain an even deeper insight into the impact of LSM from first-hand accounts of students, faculty, fellows, families, and supporters.

As we celebrate 40 years, we’re also celebrating a sustainable organization. The fiscal year ending September 30, 2022, marks the fourth consecutive year of a balanced budget for LSM. Thanks to hundreds of supporters, the LSM culture of philanthropy and gratitude extends deep into the in-person community. Every LSM 2022 faculty studio was sponsored, the majority of our students benefited from financial assistance through scholarship support, and each concert was underwritten. Thank you to everyone who has supported LSM and cared for these next generation of leaders.

LSM is always a deeply personal experience for me and countless others. After four weeks together, singing Carl Schalk’s inspired setting of Luther’s Morning Prayer each day, as we sing it together for one last time during the final Festival Eucharist Service, I’m always moved beyond understanding. Friends singing in rich harmony, filling the Chapel of the Resurrection, gives hope and promise for our future. A future led by many of the students who are a part of LSM today.

Thank you for your support of this community and the future of the music, traditions, and programs that we hold so dear.

With gratitude,

Thomas Bandar Executive & Artistic Director

Sophia’s Family

I can barely even express my gratitude for LSM. As a mother, LSM made me laugh, and feel happiness and gratitude as I watched my daughter grow and be inspired as a musician and as a person. Even though I was far away from her, I felt like I was close to her. I was able to see, learn, and feel what she was experiencing through the many livestreams, pictures, and videos. This is a great summer program for people to grow inspiration and knowledge. ~Camilla

LSM was an incredible experience. I learned so much, made many friendships that will last a lifetime, and it was one of the best months of my life so far. It inspired me to work even harder and to be a better musician. The food was very nutritious and delicious, and the LSM community was so kind and caring. The Valparaiso campus is beautiful as well. This program was a great experience for me. ~Sophia

Kaydence’s Family

My name is Quinessa but known to most as simply, “Q.” I’m a Wardrobe Stylist & Image Consultant from Chicago, mother of two, Kaydence (14) and Kadé (5), and wife to their father, Kris. We are a unique, artistic family that’s all about expressing ourselves. And, we LOVE music! Kris is a Songwriter and Performer and the whole family loves all different types of music. So when Kaydence was offered the opportunity to attend LSM, it was a no-brainer!

Coming from the Westside of Chicago as people of color, we are rarely given opportunities for advancement socially, personally, or professionally. So we understand the importance of accepting these types of opportunities when they’re offered. This was the very first time

think of LSM?”

Kaydence would experience anything like this and be away from her family for four whole weeks.

From the moment we walked on campus, we knew this experience would impact her, but we had no idea how amazing it would be. Not only did she advance as a flute player, but she also connected with girls from all over the country with different backgrounds and similar interests. Staying on a college campus, she learned the importance of order, accountability, responsibility, and togetherness. We loved visiting, watching her perform in recitals, meeting her new friends (whom she still communicates with today), and seeing her blossom in this new environment.

When Kaydence came home, we saw an immediate change (growth) in her! She was EXCITED to collaborate with her dad and make music TOGETHER, something she’d never done before! As he was in the middle of composing a song, he asked Kaydence to play some notes on her flute. She listened to the track and was able to write the notes down, translating what she heard into music notes! Then together, right before my eyes and ears, they created this lovely tune, with her playing the flute. It was truly magical! She was already talented, but I know her experience at LSM amplified what was inside her.

Grace’s Family

Words cannot express our sheer gratitude to Lutheran Summer Music! Our journey began in early 2022 when my husband and I were discerning options for our oldest daughter, Grace. We had heard amazing things, but we still weren’t sure if we were ready to send our child so far away. With a recent move from Washington, DC, to Wyoming, we were just getting our roots planted when COVID hit the world, and our kids had missed two pivotal summers of camps and peer interaction.

We made the leap of faith to send Grace and opted for the entire month versus just two weeks. In that time, we saw Grace’s confidence grow, her musical ability expand and, to borrow a phrase, she had “found her people.” In fact, she has found some of her dearest mentors and friends.

Once on campus for the closing weekend, my mom and I found community among the other adults and parents. Repeatedly I heard stories of how LSM became a welcoming and inclusive space for all students.

Grace shared, “If I’m being honest, arriving at Valpo was nerve-wracking. I was so scared, but when I started talking to people, I got used to it. I had a great time! In fact, I was so upset when I had to leave. I can’t wait to go again!”

Hear from more first-time students.

We truly give thanks to LSM for welcoming our daughter in and allowing her to shine her light and love of music. We hope to meet you next summer! ~Krista

The Next Generation of Creators

The 2022 Composition Elective met for the first time on Tuesday of Week One. During that 50-minute class, the students collectively composed a psalm refrain for Evening Prayer. The class led the psalm during worship, singing the refrain and accompanying with hand chimes. During the second meeting of the class, a small group composed a melody for a sung response used in the Thanksgiving for Baptism at our first Sunday morning service. For anyone bearing anxiety about the future of music in the church –take heart! We are in good hands.

Just three weeks after our first class, the students presented the Fresh Ink! recital. It is mindboggling to contemplate the amount of detailed work that the students invested in this project. During a short three-week period, the students conceived an idea for a composition, decided on the instrumentation for their piece, honed their musical ideas, wrote the piece down, recruited peers to play in their ensembles, created separate scores for each of the players, scheduled rehearsal times, and pulled the whole piece together, performing in front of the entire LSM community. Wow. Pretty amazing!

There was a delightful variety of music in the Fresh Ink! recital: Anna composed a string quartet based on a Lithuanian folk tune; Damaris wrote both the words and the music for her song “As Far as the East from the West,” with each of the three verses based on a person from scripture;

Micah composed a duet called the “Peace for Violin and Cello”; Lily titled her trio for flute and two violins the “Pentatonic Confliction”; Trygg’s quintet, “Chapel of the Resurrection,” was written for bass flute, alto flute, flute, oboe, and cello.

Each of the twenty-two students in the Composition Elective displayed wonderful gifts of creativity and thoughtfulness. They were kind to one another and supportive as their compositions developed from the germ of an idea into an actual piece. For a composer, sharing a fledgling composition can be a vulnerable experience, but the LSM emphasis on community, faith, and music creates an environment of trust and care in which students are able to take musical risks, knowing that they have the support of their peers. This is a gift! Thanks to all who support LSM, providing opportunities for the students to stretch and grow.

The LSM Fellow Experience

LSM Fellows serve as teaching assistants to nationally renowned faculty members, demonstrate high-caliber musicianship, and convey a commitment to an inclusive and welcoming community.

“The Fellow experience has been invaluable. As a church musician, I gained practical experience in a community that worships daily. At the same time, I was able to work on my instrument [organ] through lessons and performances. The safe and welcoming community at LSM is such that one can explore new things that are outside of their comfort zone. In the Fellow program, one also gets to collaborate with other fellows, faculty, and students in high-caliber performances. As a fellow, there are many opportunities to both teach and perform. I would highly recommend that any college student who is interested in all of this consider the Fellow program at LSM.”

Anne Krentz Organ served as the LSM 2022 Composer-in-Residence and serves throughout the year as the Director of Music Ministries at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Park Ridge, IL. Her compositions are published by Abingdon Press, Augsburg Fortress, Choristers Guild, Concordia Publishing House, Hope Publishing Company, and MorningStar Music.

7
Ezechiel Daos, 2021 Voice Fellow and 2022 Organ Fellow, is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in organ performance at the University of North Texas.

“Part of what makes LSM so special is that the people are just as important as the music. Coming to LSM changed my life because I was able to work with faculty that not only taught me proper technical and musical practices, but they also supported me as an individual. Throughout both of my summers as an LSM fellow, I was able to perform extensively with the faculty and simultaneously develop strong relationships with them; these meaningful bonds gave me the confidence to be successful as a performer and an educator in the field. In addition to relationships with the faculty, the fellows also developed personal and musical bonds with one another that will last a lifetime. Without a doubt, some of the fellows that I met at LSM are some of my best friends and are people I will play music with throughout my career. LSM was easily one of the most enriching experiences I could have ever asked for because I made progress, connections, and deep relationships that will last for the rest of my life.”

Music Without Barriers

Through the generosity of LSM supporters, a new partnership was created in 2022 between LSM and El Sistema Colorado. El Sistema Colorado provides free, immersive after-school music education programs for students that transcend socioeconomic barriers and prioritizes enrollment for lowincome families. Four students from El Sistema Colorado joined the LSM 2022 community on fulltuition scholarships.

“LSM was a life-changing opportunity for our students. They returned home as mature artists ready to lead in ensembles. Most notably, though, they grew as people, with a more profound understanding of the importance of music in their lives.” ~Whitney Luther, El Sistema Colorado Executive Director

Sophia Flores, 2021 and 2022 Saxophone Fellow, graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Saxophone Performance from Concordia University Irvine in 2022.

Dean Dot: To LSM and Back Again

Forty years, and it’s still changing my life!

Lutheran Summer Music – 1982 – I called and asked to be a part of it. 2022 – I called and asked to be a part of it again. In between, it has taught me how to build a musical worshiping community. It was integral to my Lutheran teaching ministry of 43 years and now in my “retirement,” God calls me via LSM to retake the mantle and serve Him. When I got home this summer, I struggled with putting the “LSM-reenergized” me back into contact with opportunities of service.

By the end of this month a new “schedule” has emerged: working with new middle school band students at one school, teaching music to the youngest students in early childhood

“When we got to LSM the first thing I learned was that it doesn’t matter your skill level right now, but how much you grow as a musician AND as a person. So, keeping that in mind, I worked hard and practiced for hours because it was that line that made me want to keep going. I wanted to see myself improve more than anything. And I did! It’s crazy how that one month really impacted how I think about everything now!” ~Camila, LSM 2022 student

classrooms, visiting folks who can’t get out and about, and sharing videos of the choir songs from the previous week’s services.

The woodwind quintet that I play in has set a monthly schedule of performances for the folks who live in my husband’s assisted living home. Conducting our community band also was added when the conductor faced some medical issues.

Cheryl Lemmons’ practice hints did not fall on deaf ears. Playing nearly every day makes oboe playing all the better. Channeling Jeff Doebler as I conduct the band gives me a new drive.

This is an accounting of what LSM gave me permission to do. Permission, and a reawakening of living in a tightly bonded community, relishing the grace of God. Thank you for the opportunity to be present and soak in the spiritual waters, resplendent in tunes of delight.

Paying it Forward

As a five-year alum of Lutheran Summer Music, joining the national staff has been a delight.

In my role, I’m privileged to witness the immediate effect of LSM by overseeing the student experience. But beyond the summer, I also get to see the astounding lasting impact. In welcoming new prospective students, I connect with so many church musicians, pastors, music teachers—many of whom are LSM alumni! From generation to generation, this Academy & Festival has helped young people find belonging, growth, vocation, and even more simply put: joy.

Just last week, I spoke with the parent of a 2022 student who told me she planned to tell many of her friends and families in her church about LSM. While choking up about her daughter’s experience, she said that by telling others about LSM, she was “paying it forward.”

YES! How do I – how do we – pay it forward? We connect new students to LSM and draw the circle wider. Don’t keep it to yourself! The #1 way that students find their way to LSM is through the encouragement of a caring adult in their lives.

Don’t give yourself pause with the theoretical barriers of financial need, time commitment, readiness, or musical skill. I’ve heard them all, and they are all surmountable – it’s my job to help remove these barriers, and I’m only too happy to connect with families to do so.

J.S. Bach Society

THREE WAYS YOU CAN PAY IT FORWARD

1. Nominate a student for LSM. Be sure to tell them you nominated them, and that they’ll hear from me!

2. Give a brochure or share a video with a student you know.

Request materials that you can hand out or forward an LSM video link to a family you know.

3. Share about LSM with your home congregation.

Use our bulletin inserts or ready-made copy to include in church communications or ask if you can share about LSM in worship announcements.

Messerli Service Award

In 2018, the Lutheran Music Program Board of Directors inaugurated the first annual Dr. Carlos Messerli Service Award. The award is given each year to someone who follows Dr. Messerli’s example of outstanding service to the mission of Lutheran Music Program.

The Award is inscribed with the following Bible verse: Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your partnership in encouraging new students toward LSM. And please, reach out to me any time! I love to hear from you.

A Lavish Gift

I cannot begin to tell you how many years I had heard about Valparaiso University and thought, “Yeah. Right.”

It was July 2018. That summer the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians purposefully held a conference at Valparaiso during Festival Week of Lutheran Summer Music. It was an opportunity to give ALCM members a glimpse of LSM life. I stepped into the Chapel of the Resurrection and I “got it.” From that very moment, I knew I wanted to come back.

When my church offered me a sabbatical, the thought crossed my mind to volunteer at LSM. I reached out to Tom Bandar, who asked what I wanted out of my time there. I honestly didn’t know. I just wanted to be immersed in LSM and experience the fullness of that which I had only experienced a foretaste. This summer, I returned to Valparaiso.

I can describe my journey at LSM as both exhilarating and exhausting. The worship staff as assembled by Chad Fothergill was amazing and I was thrilled to be a part of it. Hours were spent helping to plan and participate in more than forty worship services. I observed band, concert choir, Bach choir, handbell choir, orchestra, jazz band, church music, intro to pipe organ, and musical theatre. Recitals, concerts, and worship were food for my soul. There were conversations with students, fellows, faculty, staff, and board members.

Words cannot fully convey the depth of this community – the dedication, encouragement, lack of egos – the family we become. Joy filled my heart as I watched students blossom both

personally and musically. Even though I had previously heard of LSM, received promotional materials, and gotten a peek at its offerings, I didn’t understand the impact it has on the lives of all who participate. In my area of the country, LSM feels like a well-kept secret. I want to share with everyone how extraordinary LSM is. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a lavish gift. I look forward to sharing my story and inviting others to become part of the LSM family.

in music in the St. Olaf Orchestra. As I look back on each of my life experiences and choices and how they led me to where I am today, I know that LSM served as a catalyst to introduce me to people that would shape me and guide me to use music and science to give back to my community in ways that I would have never dreamed.

LSM taught me to keep music as a fun part of my life where it can serve as my avocation. I am privileged to be able to give back to Lutheran Summer Music both financially and as a member of the Alumni Advisory Council. LSM served to shape my life and direct me down paths that I could not have seen without those experiences, and I want to help ensure that as many as possible have that same opportunity that I had.

Eddinger served as a Parish Musician in Residence during LSM 2022, and is the Minister of Music at Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading, PA.

Changed, Led, and Taught

Throughout my younger years of development as a musician I knew of LSM as my elder sister was attending as a student and figured that the natural progression of things would put me there too for my summers when I was old enough. The first summer that I attended was the summer prior to freshman year of high school. I was one of 21 oboes that year (if I remember correctly) and was placed as first chair oboe in the orchestra. The highlight of the summer was playing Gustav Holst’s The Planets in the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University. After that first summer I was completely hooked on the program and knew that I would return as many times as I could.

LSM changed me in so many ways. I attended as so many shy, weird, introverted teens do and found a group of people that were just like me. LSM is an intentional community that provided a place for me to grow spiritually, musically, and most of all as a person. I learned to live in close quarters with strangers that quickly became friends. I learned to follow a schedule without parental guidance and to be responsible for planning my time and developing relationships with my peers.

LSM led me to attend St. Olaf College where I studied biology and continued to participate

Dr. John Groerich

(LSM 2000–04, Intern 2005–06, Counselor 2008) runs HealthSource Chiropractic of Clayton, MO as a Chiropractor and Acupuncturist and is active as a freelance oboist in the St. Louis area.

A Legacy for the Future

In 1980 I received a phone call from Carlos Messerli inviting me to be on the piano faculty of the first LSM program. I accepted and taught for the first three summers of LSM at St. Olaf, Luther, and Valparaiso. There I encountered amazing colleagues, even more amazing students, and amazing dreams from our leader, Carlos. I remember him telling us at the first faculty meeting in 1982 that he wasn’t sure if everything was going to work since we were more or less inventing something new. But he needn’t have worried.

Carlos had an extraordinary vision for what LSM could become and his infectious enthusiasm permeated every moment of every day that first summer. Another memory from those early years was listening to Weston Noble’s lecture on the appoggiatura principle, certainly not a topic one would expect high school students to latch onto, but in the context of LSM, they sat there listening with rapt attention.

Karen

I’ve never worked harder in my life than those summers, teaching, scheduling, coaching, performing, accompanying, counseling, comforting—life with high school students is certainly more life-filled than with any other age group. I can say without hyperbole that experiencing the daily enthusiasm of the students, the daily rhythm of morning and evening prayer, and witnessing the musical accomplishments of those students, both individually and in ensembles, was a thrilling highlight of my life.

We were happy that our daughter Miriam (LSM 1991–92) was able to attend LSM as a student back in the 90s. Her experiences during those summers remain one of the formative experiences in her life. My wife Kathy served on the LSM board for two years, bringing her financial expertise to LSM. These experiences, along with my summers of teaching, have served to make us life partners with LSM. We have always looked forward to reading the yearly reports and following the progress of LSM throughout these last 40+ years.

We have included LSM in our will because it fulfills so many key goals of the Church: educating, challenging, and inspiring youth to faith in God; dedication to their art, leadership in the church, and service to the world. I believe that LSM is the most effective tool Lutherans have to prepare young musicians for service in the church.

This past July’s LSM and ALCM partnership conference at Valpo confirmed our hopes that the dream of LSM has remained steadfast. And not only is it undimmed by the challenges of the present age, it shines even brighter, leading us into the future God gives us.

Answering Carlos’s Call

In the early days of Lutheran Music Program, Dr. Carlos Messerli visited us to discuss his mission to help students develop a love of Lutheran worship and liturgy. His enthusiasm for this important work was contagious, and we quickly agreed to help support it. Several years later he planned a fundraiser at our house featuring Dr. Paul Manz at Ron’s Casavant pipe organ. It was such a pleasure to hear Dr. Manz improvise on it.

We’ve encouraged students from our church to attend Lutheran Summer Music by helping with scholarships. They, along with our congregation, benefited greatly. We believe that music and liturgy add much to worship services.

We are also strong supporters of Bread for the World, a Christian non-profit group that advocates for policy changes to end hunger. Carol served on the national board. We always gave anonymously until the former president of Bread for the World urged us to share our names so others might be similarly inspired. We are happy to do the same for Lutheran Summer Music.

Dr. Ron and Carol Burmeister are longtime residents of Rockford, Illinois. They were the underwriters of the LSM 2022 Festival of Hymns, which they dedicated in memory of Dr. Paul Manz

I loved my time at LSM.

In only a month I made life-long friends, improved at my instrument, discovered the art of conducting and composing, performed for countless events, and founded the basis of my musical interests that will be paramount in developing my Honors thesis throughout college. I dedicated my summer after senior year to this program and wouldn’t change it for the world!

~Anna, LSM 2022 student

Learning from college-level professors was eye opening. It not only challenged me but made me love music like never before.

~Joseph, LSM 2022 student

LSM really helped prepare me for the experience of being a full-time music student.

40 Years of Alumni

With over 80 alumni attending, the 40th Anniversary Alumni Reunion was a joyful and energetic event!

Past students from every year at LSM, beginning all the way back to 1982, were represented. Alumni were able to attend LSM Festival Week concerts and worship services, even performing themselves in the inaugural Alumni Recital and sharing music for Evening Prayer and the closing Eucharist through the Alumni Choir, directed by past LSM chapel choir director Zebulon Highben. But some alumni felt this wasn’t enough!

Megan Glass (LSM 2003–2006)

shared, “Attending the alumni weekend was a much-needed respite from ‘the real world’ and something of a jump back in time. Each night of Evening Prayer brought peace, and each concert brought back wonderful memories of my time as a student. I only wish the alumni weekend could have been longer! (Alumni week, anyone?)”

Read more about the reunion here.

“The musical excellence. The faculty is just amazing. They push the kids in a really supportive environment. It is not competitive like some of the other camps I have heard of and experienced myself. The kids also have ‘found their people’ here – the warm and caring atmosphere from the students is amazing.”

Johanna Johnson, Music Teacher, Grace Lutheran Church & School in River Forest, Illinois

“I think recommending students to LSM is vital for the future of the church. Whether these students turn out to be like myself, who went into church music because of LSM, they’re coming out of LSM with a love for music of all kinds and are still being instilled to nurture the song of the church and the song we sing together.”

Ryan Hostler, Deacon for Music & Worship, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Vero Beach, Florida

“Every time they come back, they come with more confidence and willingness to share their gifts with the congregation. As a church musician, I want young people to develop their chops and not only see their gifts from the perspective of their local churches, but with an expanded sense of the world in terms of their role in worship, their participation in it, and how they can contribute to the greater community to which they belong.”

Omaldo Perez, Director of Music and Worship, Grace Lutheran Church, La Grange, Illinois

I had one of the best experiences of my life at LSM. I grew as a musician, made memories that I will always cherish, and made friends that I will have for a lifetime
