FESTIVAL EUCHARIST

What is eucharist?

Some faith traditions call this gathering mass. Some use the term holy communion And some know it as divine service. LSM uses the word eucharist (which, in Greek, means thanksgiving) to refer to the Sunday liturgy in which the Holy Spirit gathers a community around the means of grace the saving Word of God and the sacraments. The pattern of this service gathering, word, meal, sending is ancient, yet allows for freedom and flexibility in ways that respond to a community’s gifts and the concerns of the world. From the meal table we are sent to share the good news and to care for those in need. For more about communion practices at LSM, see page 13 of this bulletin.

What are today’s readings about?

In the parable of the wheat and the weeds Jesus suggests that both grow together until the harvest. With Paul, we long for the day that all creation will be set free from bondage and suffering. Having both weeds and wheat within us, we humbly place our hope in the promises of God, and from the Lord’s table we go forth to bear the fruit of justice and mercy.

How can I participate?

This liturgy uses both the chocolate-colored Lutheran Service Book (abbreviated LSB) and the cranberry-colored Evangelical Lutheran Worship (abbreviated ELW). References to “page” numbers are found in the front of the book (look for the smaller numbers at the top or bottom of each page) while references to “Hymn” numbers are found in the main section (look for larger numbers next to hymn titles).

SUNDAY, JULY 23 3

Saving God, you deliver us from slavery to freedom. You guide us through the darkness of night and bring us to safety with the morning light.

You part the waters of the sea, sparing us from chaos and death; in the face of evil, you make a way where there is no way.

Gracious God, you are our salvation, our strength, and our song. You quench our thirst with sweet, sweet water, pouring out your unending love. You claim us as your own in the waters of baptism, that we might know we belong to you. For the water of life, we give you thanks:

The lector concludes by saying “The word of the Lord” or similar words to which all respond Thanks be to God.

Choir LORD, you have | searched me out; O LORD, | you have known me.

You know my sitting down and my | rising up; you discern my thoughts | from afar.

You trace my journeys and my | resting-places and are acquainted with | all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word | on my lips, but you, O LORD, know it | altogether.

All You encompass me, behind | and before, and lay your | hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonder- | ful for me; it is so high that I cannot at- | tain to it.

Where can I go then | from your Spirit? Where can I flee | from your presence? If I climb up to heaven, | you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you | are there also.

eucharistic prayer Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. From age to age your creation sings your praises. You feed even the birds of the air, and you clothe the fields with lilies. You gave your blessing to Abraham and Sarah and their descendants. You spoke with Moses, Elijah, and David, and sang your word through Deborah, Miriam, and Hannah.

You fulfilled your covenant with us in Jesus. He is Emmanuel, your beloved Son, the star that guides us to wisdom, the treasure hidden in a field. He is the landowner who overpays the workers,

FESTIVAL EUCHARIST 10

the farmer who harvests the wheat from the weeds, the judge who separates good from evil.

For us he lived, for us he died, for us he rose to eternal life. Then and now he invites us to your banquet.

On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

We hear his call, we repent our ways, and we enter with joy into the kingdom of heaven.

SUNDAY, JULY 23 11

Send your Holy Spirit here on your gathered disciples. Make of this meal the body and blood of forgiveness. Heal us and grant us your righteousness, that we may love you and serve our neighbors.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, our Father in heaven, the Rock on which we build, the Dove alighting on us all. We worship you and sing our praises, today and to the end of the age.

You may pray in any language or translation you prefer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

Amen.

Holy Communion at LSM

ELW, page 146

All are welcome at the table of our Lord Jesus Christ, but no one is required to commune. As a Lutheran worshiping community, the heart of the meal of Holy Communion (also called Eucharist) is trust in the forgiveness of sins that follows repentance. We also affirm that the crucified and risen Christ is truly present in the Lord’s Supper, giving us his body and blood as food and drink.

You are welcome to come forward at the direction of an usher, following others up the right side to the table. The bread is gluten-free, and we offer both regular wine and alcohol-free wine. Receive the bread first with an open hand and eat immediately, followed by regular wine from a common cup or by individual cup from a pouring chalice of regular wine (first chalice) or alcohol-free wine (second chalice). All three stations around the altar offer bread, common cup and individual cup. Please approach any open station at the direction of an usher. There is also a station on the floor level, to your left as you approach the steps.

Please know that you are also welcome to come forward and receive a blessing at any station: show this by crossing your arms and hands over your shoulders.

If your own church tradition or personal conviction would not have you commune with us, you are welcome to remain in your chair to sing and pray during the meal. In the spirit of the traditional Kyrie, may we all continue to pray “for the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all.”

BE THANKFUL

This year’s commissioned liturgical composition, Be Thankful by Anne Krentz Organ, is sponsored by Patricia Leege, Melba Panhorst, and Lissa Leege and Frank D’Arcangelo in memory of David Leege

Dr. David Leege (1937–2021) was a member of the Lutheran Music Program Board of Directors from 1999–2010, including serving as its Chair. Dave’s work as a political scientist took the family to universities mainly in the Midwest, Europe, and the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. He retired from the University of Notre Dame, where he served for 26 years.

Dave was an enthusiastic supporter of sacred music. In 2000 along with his wife Pat they endowed the Regina Holmen Fryxell and Patricia Schad Leege Organ and Church Music Chair. For over 20 years this endowed chair has helped secure LSM’s commitment to excellent faculty who lead the worship life of the program and create educational opportunities for our students

In addition to his active involvement, Dave’s daughter Lissa Leege (LSM ’82) and his grandson Micah D’Arcangelo (LSM ’17, ’18) both attended LSM.
