Dear Friends,

Welcome!

Thanks to your advocacy, dedication, and enthusiasm, 2023 was a milestone year for Lutheran Summer Music in countless ways.

There is much to celebrate this year – LSM 2023 saw capacity enrollment, using every bed available from the university to house this year’s community. New outreach programs brought music to innumerable community members and in turn invited them to attend concerts and services in person. Increased technology allowed music and worship to reach people around the world, with over 100,000 views of events from the summer. Alumni from nearly every year returned to campus, adding their voices to the community through song, support, and social events. To put it simply, LSM is growing, and its impact deepening. 2023 was also a year of extraordinary generosity. Donors, alumni, and parents sponsored every faculty studio and concert on campus. Over a hundred people contributed to Step Up LSM, a single day of giving that raised scholarship funds to ensure every student was able to attend. Because of you, LSM again finished the year with a balanced budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and long-term sustainability for the program we all love. But let us not only be measured by the size of the program or the number of people who are touched by the experience. LSM is, at its core, deeply personal, immersive, and life changing. Its transformative impact cannot be measured by a summer, by view counts, or by concert attendees. The growth at LSM adds value, music, and faith for a lifetime. The connections that are deepened are immeasurable – getting to know oneself, becoming connected to others, and feeling closer to God. All of this happens through music, the through line that opens hearts, possibilities, and connections. Thank you for making LSM possible and investing in the next generation of leaders. I hope you feel encouraged by what’s possible when we come together and, through music, change lives. With gratitude,

Thomas Bandar Executive & Artistic Director tbandar@lutheransummermusic.org

CANTOR’S CORNER A note from Chad Fothergill (LSM 2000), Cantor Although the last chord of LSM 2023 rang out months ago, the sights and sounds of a wonderful and robust summer continue to reverberate in many ways—a fitting reminder on this feast day that earthly music is but a foretaste of the great and promised feast with choirs of saints and angels.

Chad Fothergill

LSM 2023 was, of course, an abundant musical feast unto itself. Here are some highlights from the organ and church music area: On move-in day, we met eleven organ students and heard at least five of the Eight Little Preludes and Fugues performed at auditions (a few of which became part of an all-Bach prelude for cantata Sunday). Several organ students were already serving as musicians for their home congregations, and their festival week recital included performances of repertoire alongside the singing of several hymns. Later in the first week, the worship staff welcomed the full LSM student body to the chapel for a hands-on introduction to leadership roles for worship: seasoned and future acolytes, lectors, cantors, and assisting ministers were able to explore stations for carrying, reading, praying, and singing with members of the chapel staff. During the second week, church music students joined the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians conference in Philadelphia via Zoom for a conversation about vocation. And a student who brought an ocarina to LSM asked to help lead worship, so we created a psalm setting for evening prayer using the Native American melody Lac qui parle. At the start of the third week, LSM hosted Paul Vasile, executive director of Music that Makes Community. During his residency, Paul worked with church music students, the chapel choir, and shared the communitybuilding gifts of rote singing with the full community at morning and evening prayer—some of these songs helped shape the following week’s hymn festival. Thanks to the generosity of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, several boxes of choral and liturgical music were made available for LSM students. A few students returned several times with empty backpacks to claim these treasures for their future study and use.

4

This LSM season also intersected with my own transition from “interim” to “permanent” status as organist at Duke University Chapel: lessons from LSM 2023—including daily practice tips from Cheryl Lemmons—have shaped my approach to practicing, playing, teaching, and mentoring, especially with the students who plan and lead liturgies at Duke Divinity School. But what I recall most about LSM 2023 was the musicality and maturity of the entire student body—their attentive listening and mutual support in studio classes, their astute (and challenging) questions during elective meetings and the annual Bach cantata workshop, and their unbounded creativity. During the alumni reunion I was able to again see organ and church music students from previous LSM seasons who are now exploring graduate programs in sacred music, study abroad opportunities, or parish ministry positions. They join generations of alumni who can attest to the transformative and lifelong impact of their LSM experience. It is in that spirit that we acknowledge and thank all who make LSM possible—donors, parents and families, friends, congregations, institutional partners, and more. Gifts of time, talent, and resources help in myriad ways, both seen and unseen. They help:

• to support the creative gifts of a liturgical composerin-residence whose music blesses both the LSM community and the wider church.

• to develop faculty roles that respond to the changing landscape of church music.

• to provide parish musicians, seminarians, and

other professionals with inspiration and vocational enrichment at LSM.

• to grow scholarship funds for students. • to foster trust and enthusiasm among the LSM

staff to work creatively and flexibly within shifting contexts.

• to ensure new generations of faithful leadership in the church.

We look forward to building on the successes of the past year, and eagerly anticipate the first chords that will announce the sights and sounds of LSM 2024!

LSM 2023 Faculty Studios & Sponsors “Being at LSM, it's eye-opening to be studying under internationally soughtafter musicians, and to see their humbleness and their passion toward music and toward teaching children how to excel in their craft. To watch the faculty during their recitals and see how much fun they're having has given me so much purpose as a musician, and it's given me so much guidance to know that this is what I want to do in the future..” – Sarah 2022–23

YOUNG MUSICIANS PARTNERSHIP The Young Musicians Partnership (YMP) is a growing network of organizations who financially support young musicians to attend Lutheran Summer Music. Any organization (such as churches, family foundations, rotary clubs, etc.) which contributes to a specific student’s tuition will be automatically recognized as a Young Musicians Partner. To honor this partnership, funds contributed by an organization will be matched at 50% by Lutheran Summer Music, up to a match of $500.

J.S. Bach Society

Donor Spotlight: Why I Supported the Student Organ Recital Jeremy Wirths (LSM 1994) The treasured music of the Lutheran tradition can only be performed by highly skilled organists. Without a new generation of organ performers, the organ music of the great Lutheran masters will live only in recordings. LSM provides teachers at the height of their profession along with some of the finest and largest instruments in the world. These opportunities create seeds of interest in beginning students and the nurturing and cultivation needed for students who are already more advanced.

Organ Elective / Jeremy Wirths

LSM students hear performances of the full gamut of organ literature as well as great improvisation, an important part of the organ tradition that many students would not have the chance to experience in their hometowns and congregations. LSM also provides young organists with a sense of a community of organists, something they may not find anywhere else.

Much like Bach’s enduring influence over classical and sacred music and the Church, the J.S. Bach Society honors individuals who have committed to LSM’s long-term impact by including Lutheran Music Program in their will or estate plans. Thanks to these individuals for their dedication to the sustainability and influence of LSM on students, congregations, and our community.

We witnessed the life-changing influence of LSM when our daughter returned from her first camp experience and asked us for a more challenging teacher at home and a better violin. Three more LSM summer camps and 20+ years later, she’s performing professionally and directing middle school orchestras and her church choirs in Denver.

Elisabeth Esther Williams influenced and nurtured her seven living children's Christian faith, as an active member of Grace Lutheran Church-Denison. She was a long-time teacher of home-bound students, & high school mathematics, encouraging her students and serving as a mentor and role model. Naming the LSM 2023 Fellows Program in Elisabeth's honor was a perfect way to celebrate her 94th birthday by encouraging young LSM teaching assistants and role models, just as she had encouraged and supported students during her teaching career.

Apollo’s Fire Members of the GRAMMY-winning ensemble Apollo’s Fire joined the LSM 2023 community to cap off week one. Musicians from the period-instrument orchestra presented classes to the students and fellows, led masterclasses, shared about their unique careers, and presented an astounding concert in the Chapel of the Resurrection. The Apollo’s Fire residency was underwritten by the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University.

Expanded Outreach Initiatives This summer, Lutheran Summer Music expanded its outreach initiatives, bringing the LSM experience off campus and into the local and global community. Faculty, students, and fellows offered their musical gifts in church services, retirement communities, and even full-length recitals off campus. An enhanced livestream experience delivered over 20 concerts and events to a national and international audience. Assisted Living Recitals / Christ Lutheran Hammond / Trinity Recital Apollo's Fire

Congratulations to the 2023 Peter Wessler Scholarship Award recipient: Henry from Tuckahoe, NY.

“LSM brings together a lot of different people from all over the country and from different backgrounds, from different levels of experience – and that has made me feel like I belong more. It’s a lot of fun to be in a community with people who show common interests with you, who are serious about music, and who are also here to have fun.” Read more from Henry at LSMacademy.org/news

Congratulations to the 2023 Carl Schalk Scholarship Award recipient: Eliana from Kirkwood, MO. “Through organ lessons at LSM, I learned how to play along and lead a congregation. I used this on Cantata Sunday at LSM, when I played the Agnus Dei in a service. The importance of church music is that what we are playing and what we are singing is to the glory of God and not to the glory of ourselves.” Read more from Eliana at LSMacademy.org/news

Congratulations!

Keith Alcius (third from left) / Praetorius Brass Quintet.

The Organ Studio

Guest Artist: Keith Alcius

constantly poised to burst into joyous fanfare. I nearly cried again the first time I heard her played—the chapel has a reverberation time of over five seconds, and the sheer amount of bellowing, echoing noise that she can produce is akin to an entire orchestra blasting at full force. As to the first time I got to play her—well, I don’t believe the English language contains the words necessary to describe it. Rumbling and rabid, dignified and stately, unleashed and free yet bound to the will of a single human being—these words don’t come close to describing how it feels to blast the opening of Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” with this organ, in this space. This aspect alone of the camp has provided me with breathtaking, unique opportunities to develop my skill with this instrument—skills that will be highly applicable in the church setting at Trinity when I return!”

Keith Alcius (LSM 2009–13) joined LSM this summer as a guest artist. Mr. Alcius taught tuba lessons, gave masterclasses, and performed solo and with the Praetorius Brass Quintet. Reflecting on his time at LSM, he shared "I wanted to quit music in tenth grade... LSM brought me back." He is now an active musician and educator serving Central New York. Mr. Alcius’ residency was generously sponsored by Norm and Kathy Porath.

Eugene and Mary Sukup Church Music Program 2023 was the inaugural year of the Eugene and Mary Sukup Church Music Program, which renews LSM’s focus on preparing the next generation of church musicians and organists and expands curriculum and educational offerings. This year the Program funded scholarships for a growing organ studio, created the Liturgical Composer-inResidence position held by Anne Krentz Organ, and welcomed Paul Vasile to LSM as a guest artist to work with the 2023 community. Additional support for Mr. Vasile’s residency was provided by Nancy Dickerson.

An LSM Exchange Congratulations to Dr. Benjamin Yates, LSM Low Brass Faculty, who will be teaching at Luther College this fall during his sabbatical.

Organ Enrollment Growth The Organ Studio witnessed significant enrollment growth this summer! In a letter to her home congregation, first-year student Naomi wrote, "This summer, I’m studying pipe organ on one of the biggest organs in the United States, with 102 ranks, and over 5,000 pipes. The first time I saw her, I nearly cried. Her facade of pipes spreads regally across the back wall of the (equally impressive) chapel, with Spanish hornpipes pointing out towards the congregation, Naomi

"I’m excited to be back at Luther College this semester, working with dynamic faculty and students that understand the power of music, community, and faith," shared Dr. Yates. Another congratulations to Brandon Domingue, 2023 LSM Fellow, who will serve as head of the Trombone and Low Brass studio at UL Lafayette while Dr. Yates is on sabbatical. "Having the opportunity to work at LSM helped me develop my teaching skills and prepared me for instruction at a high level," shared Mr. Domingue. Dr. Yates added, "after working closely together for the

summer at LSM, I know Brandon will do a great job at ULL!"

Legacy Programming Dr. Shannon Gravelle, LSM Festival Choir Conductor, chose to program Paul Basler’s “Alleluia” in part due to nostalgia from her first summers with LSM. In 2006, she performed the piece with LSM when she served as a counselor. Dr. Bruce Atwell, Horn Faculty, also played on that performance and performed the work again this summer! Dr. Shannon Gravelle

Chaplain Nathan Baker-Trinity

Everyone Has a Place After a whirlwind day of auditions, Chaplain Nathan Baker-Trinity reminded our students: "In God's love, no role is too small or minor or hidden. That's because here at LSM, you are first and foremost connected to a body: a body that moves together, breathes together, sings together, marks its days from sunrise to sunset together. Here, everyone gets a chair. Everyone has a place."

First Third-Generation Student This summer, LSM welcomed its first third-generation LSM student: Jade! Jade's mother, Kristen, attended 2001-2004, and her grandmother, Jennifer, attended in 1985. We are grateful for all of the family connections at LSM as well as the LSM family that we are ALL lifetime members of.

From Far and Wide Meet Luis! This was not only his first summer with LSM, but also his first summer out of his home state of California. Luis is among those who traveled the farthest to be at LSM. He said his experience was initially nerve-racking but was excited to experience new places and new people, including taking a tuba lesson with guest artist, Keith Alcius. Luis connected to LSM through nomination and encouragement from a family of music educators and LSM supporters: Margie Drumm, Harmony Mendez (Drumm) and Terence Mendez, and Melody Drumm (LSM 2000–01). DR. SANGEETHA RAYAPATI ACCEPTS LSM'S INAUGURAL ALUMNI AWARD LSM’s inaugural Alumni Award was presented to Dr. Sangeetha Rayapati (LSM Student 1990–91, Counselor 1997, Voice Faculty 2000–03) during LSM 2023 at the annual Board of Directors Reception on Saturday, July 22, 2023. With over 100 guests in attendance and just hours before the final orchestra concert, the energy in the room was palpable. The purpose of the LSM Alumni Award is to honor those alumni who have made significant contributions in the spirit of Lutheran Summer Music’s longstanding values of community, collaboration, respect, and perseverance. Read Dr. Rayapati’s full acceptance speech: Good evening, everyone. It truly is an honor to accept this award, I am humbled and privileged, but even more importantly, I am so very thankful to have been a part of the LSM community for over 30 years. I am only standing here today because in 1990, I saw a poster in the choir room at my home church advertising Lutheran Summer Music at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. I told my mom I wanted to go. My mom came from the Lutheran choral tradition in Minnesota and she must have leapt for joy inside to be able to send me as a camper and to see what all those years of piano lessons and singing might reveal. Neither she, nor I, nor anyone else, could have imagined the blessings that would flow from that experience and truly, I do believe that LSM set in motion a stream of blessings that continues to flow, renewing my spirit and helping me walk in the world with a rootedness to my vocational calling year after year.

Dr. Sangeetha Rayapati & Thomas Bandar

I know that that stream of blessings flows through the lives of many other LSM alumni who are active in their communities doing important work. I’m amazed at how the life paths of friends and colleagues I had at LSM have crossed, time and again over the years. I went to college and grad school with at least 5 or 6 alumni and I’ve collaborated outside of LSM recitals with colleagues I served with on teaching staff. As program alumni, we can look back at our 4, 8, and sometimes 12 or 16 weeks of LSM experiences and point to transformational moments in rehearsal, performance, or in the cafeteria and practice rooms that have made a lasting impact on us. Some of us found our life partners here as well! In just a few days, Michael and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage—a relationship sprouted on this campus at LSM ‘97. I know that the nurturing community of LSM is what I drew on when I told my voice teacher here at Valparaiso University, that I wanted to add a music major because I wanted to teach voice and help singers feel the way I had been made to feel as a student at camp. That deep care, recognition and fostering of talent, setting high performance goals, and infusing all of it with deep connection to faith life– that was what sustained me through my growing years and still is making an impact on my professional life as I do what I told my teacher I wanted to do. It is an honor to accept this inaugural alumni award and one I will treasure always. I am so excited to see the direction LSM is going and to know that the transformative experiences I had are still happening for students. I wish you all the best as you guide the program into the future and create many more young people who are nurtured and renewed through the study of music and its place in our world.

LIFELONG INVOLVEMENT for ALUMNI

You have a lasting connection to LSM. Each year, alumni reconnect to their transformational LSM experiences by nominating students, donating, volunteering, attending regional events and the summer alumni gathering, and sharing their music and stories with the LSM community.

“LSM was a truly life changing and life-saving program for me. The program's values and mission still loudly resonate in my life now, 20 years later and counting. I want to ensure current and future students have the same life-impacting time as I did as a student all those years ago.” – Dan Schroeder (LSM student 2002–04, Intern 2005)

A welcoming and joyful community for young musicians

Alumni Fund Early-Enrollment Scholarship Drawing Thanks to the alumni who attended the 2023 gathering and fully funded the early-enrollment scholarship drawing! Ale’s name was drawn out of a pool of 78 early enrollers for LSM 2024. Ale is a cellist who will be returning to LSM for her third summer.
